00:00The New York Giants traded disgruntled defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence to the Cincinnati Bengals for the 10th pick in the
00:08draft.
00:09Now, good job for the Giants, in my opinion.
00:13So Dexter had two seasons left on his contract, but no money guaranteed.
00:17He was going to make about 22 million bucks a year.
00:21But again, none of it was guaranteed.
00:22He's coming off his worst year as a pro, saw that lingering elbow issue, and he only had half a
00:27sack, but he did play in all 17 games, right?
00:30The year before when he got hurt, pardon me, he played in all 17.
00:32Last year he didn't, but he had the elbow injury still, and he only had half a sack.
00:36And he said, look, I'd love to stay with the Giants.
00:39They were trying to negotiate a deal.
00:40Then he said, I'm done.
00:41I'm out.
00:42I'm not playing for the Giants anymore.
00:43They're not doing right by me.
00:45But Dexter Lawrence is coming off a bad year.
00:49The Bengals might be the dumbest franchise in the NFL, because not only do they give up the 10th overall
00:55pick,
00:55so a kid that they'll have up to five years of control over contractually, and when you're picking 10th, that
01:03kid better be a superstar,
01:05they in turn give Dexter Lawrence a one-year deal, albeit for $28 million.
01:12So he gets $28 million guaranteed for this year.
01:14So I guess he's happy.
01:16But the Bengals, that's the dumbest deal I've ever heard of.
01:20You know the guy wants out of New York, so New York's looking to trade not from a position of
01:25strength,
01:25from a position of weakness.
01:27You have a disgruntled player who's coming off his worst year as a pro.
01:33Why would you give up the 10th overall pick and five years of control over a young player for a
01:41guy that might be one and done?
01:43This is what desperation does in the NFL.
01:45This is called being an ass.
01:46Yes and no.
01:48Now, yes, I agree with you, but just the last segment.
01:51This is like the dumbest deal I've heard of in a long time.
01:53So I'm like, if you want to trade Dexter Lawrence or for Dexter Lawrence and you have like the 25th
01:59pick,
02:00I can at least start making that make sense.
02:02But you traded him for the 10th?
02:05It is too high.
02:06Mind-bogglingly stupid.
02:08It is if.
02:09Here's the bottom line, though.
02:10Go ahead.
02:11That general manager knows if I don't win this year, I don't give a damn about five years.
02:16We were talking about High Roseman in the last segment.
02:18He has the job security to make moves like that.
02:21The Bengals are in a situation with a very expensive offense, a quarterback, those wide receivers,
02:27and they miss the playoffs year after year.
02:28Yeah, part of it's because Burroughs gets hurt, but go ahead.
02:31Yeah.
02:32And now in the case of Lawrence, still, according to the pro football focus and people of that world,
02:37he's the most double-team defensive tackle in the league still.
02:41Last year, he was doubled more than everybody else.
02:43If you feel like this kind of move, yes, they pay too much.
02:47I agree with that completely, but the GM cannot think about, I have this player over five years.
02:52If they don't make the playoffs, and the Ravens arguably have gotten better in that division,
02:58Cleveland probably is going to be not worse.
03:00They'll probably be a little better.
03:01Maybe, yeah.
03:02They're not going to be worse.
03:03That defense is real.
03:04You have to make the playoffs.
03:06So you get a player who you, they believe.
03:08How about fix the offensive line, which has been amongst the worst in football for the last 10 years?
03:12I completely agree with you.
03:12Right?
03:13I agree with you, but they're thinking, even with that bad offensive line, we can score 30 a game, but
03:17we give up 35.
03:19This guy could be the difference between my getting fired and not getting fired.
03:24Bleep a draft pick.
03:25So I agree with you in premise, but I'm not the one with my back to the wall about to
03:29get fired.
03:30Yeah, but you're also, you're making a commitment, not just financially, $28 million,
03:35but with draft capital to a guy that looks like he's 20, 30 pounds overweight.
03:40Now, again, you can get in shape.
03:42I'm not suggesting he won't be in shape, but 20 or 30 pounds overweight.
03:45He's a big, thick dude.
03:47When he's healthy, yeah, he's one of the best defensive tackles there is in football.
03:51He's a dominant player when he's healthy, but you just made a commitment to a guy that's not healthy,
03:58at least off of last year, only had half a sack last year.
04:02And let's be honest, you have Brian Burns on his left.
04:05You had Abdul Carter on his right.
04:07And while Carter got off to a slow start, most giant fans loved what he did the last four weeks
04:12of the season.
04:13I still think the jury's a little bit out on him.
04:15You've got two of the best outside defensive linemen in football, though,
04:19if Abdul Carter makes the leap in year two that people expect him to make.
04:23That makes it a lot easier for your defensive tackle to get off, right?
04:28And he had half a sack.
04:30So who are the edge rushers for the Bengals?
04:33Answer, they don't have any.
04:35This is the dumbest franchise in the NFL.
04:39And I'm not saying that he doesn't upgrade their defensive line.
04:43He does.
04:44In a big way.
04:44But not for the 10th overall pick.
04:47You have five years of control versus one and done.
04:51Let's say, just for the sake of argument, that Dexter Lawrence isn't any good anymore.
04:56That might be the case.
04:58Might be.
04:59But he's 28, not 32.
05:01True.
05:0128 years old.
05:02But coming off the year he had last year with only half a sack,
05:04and the elbow is still a problem, and he's a little overweight right now.
05:08Let's say it goes south, just to play out the conversation, right?
05:12That means the 10th overall pick is now somebody else's for the next five years
05:18and becomes a pro bowler, right?
05:21Dexter Lawrence does not get re-signed for a second year
05:24because he was wasting money.
05:26He has a bad year.
05:27You think that GM keeps his job?
05:29No.
05:30That dude's done.
05:31Right, but he's getting fired.
05:32But here's the thing.
05:33You are not a defensive tackle away from a Super Bowl,
05:37and you're not getting a guy that's playing in his prime.
05:39Right, but if you draft a player 10th overall, right, and then they don't win.
05:44First of all, the odds of the 10th overall in this year being better than Dexter Lawrence
05:49if Dexter Lawrence can play.
05:50But you're talking about Dexter Lawrence in his prime.
05:53No, I'm with you.
05:54I'm with you on that.
05:54I'm saying even last year's Dexter Lawrence getting double teamed to that amount.
05:59The splits when he's on and off the field, even last year, worse start.
06:03The Giants stunk last year.
06:05Right, but off the field, the defense was far worse when he was off the field
06:08versus when he was on.
06:10He's still on tape.
06:11According to football people, it made a difference.
06:14I don't know, man.
06:15Look, and I like Dexter Lawrence, and I saw him play dominant football
06:18where he was the highest paid defensive tackle in the sport, and rightfully so.
06:23And when we talk about him as defensive lineman,
06:25he's in the conversation with the Miles Garrets of the world, obviously, right?
06:28Uh-huh.
06:29But, again, if you tell me I'm getting the Dexter Lawrence from two years ago,
06:34I'm all about it.
