01:25They actually play a pretty critical, pretty important role.
01:30Probably more of a role than most fitness coaches would ultimately want to admit.
01:33Now, that said, anybody out there who has at least somewhere around average genetics
01:38give or take, with the proper program in place and enough hard work and consistency over
01:43the long term, they can still achieve what would be considered to be an impressive physique.
01:47So don't let this discourage you.
01:48But where genetics do play a pretty significant role is in terms of just how quickly any given
01:55Angel phim can put on muscle, how seriously they're going to need to take their training
01:59and nutrition in order to build that muscle, what their ultimate muscle building potential
02:03is going to be not just as a whole, but also on an individual body part level, and also
02:09what their physique is going to specifically look like in terms of overall aesthetics.
02:13The reality is that unless you have upper tier genetics, unless you're in the top few
02:18percent you are not going to look like the vast majority of popular fitness influencers
02:23who are showing up in your Instagram feed.
02:25And that's because by necessity, for someone to reach that really popular position and
02:30gain that amount of attention out of the millions of other people who are posting fitness content,
02:34they're going to need to have the type of genetics that allows them to build a truly
02:38elite physique and stand out from the crowd.
02:41And when it comes to looking really impressive when you're shirtless and when you're posing
02:44in pictures and videos, muscle shape, muscle insertions and how that ties in with your
02:50height, your limb length, your waist size, your joint size, all of this stuff is really
02:55important and it's pretty much entirely the result of hardwired genetics from birth.
03:00Looking impressive on social media isn't even really about raw muscle size.
03:03It's more so about being really lean and then having good structural genetics to go along
03:08with it since it's really hard to judge size just by looking at photos.
03:13So if you are pretty lean and you also have that optimal body structure for bodybuilding,
03:18you have that really good muscle structure, those shape, those insertions.
03:22That's really what a lot of this comes down to.
03:24So I know this is a massive cliche, but ultimately you just have to make the best of what you
03:29have.
03:29Again, most people out there can still build a solid, muscular, lean, strong body, but just
03:35like you're not going to become, let's say an elite sprinter or an elite basketball player,
03:40an elite mathematician or musician, unless you have a certain amount of God given talent
03:46for those things, you're also not going to have an elite physique unless you also have
03:50the genetic capacity for that.
03:52And some people might see that as discouraging, but I think you could also say that it's very
03:56liberating as well because understanding that can free you from the disappointment and the
04:01dissatisfaction that comes from having unrealistic expectations.
04:05Red pill truth number two.
04:06Speaking of elite physiques on social media, you also have to remember that a lot of the people
04:11you see, probably more than you realize, females included, on top of having elite genetics,
04:17pharmaceutical enhancement is also a very, very common thing.
04:21Whether someone is doing full blown cycles or something like TRT or SARMs, which still provides
04:26a very significant muscle building advantage.
04:28A lot of these guys, even if they were natural, their physiques would still be unobtainable by
04:34most people out there with average genetics.
04:36But then when you add PEDs on top of it, it just gets taken to a whole new level.
04:40Not to mention that you start adding pumps and optimal lighting and angles and flexing
04:44and filters and possibly even straight up Photoshopping on top of it.
04:48That takes it again to an even further level.
04:51Most people, if they are uploading a physique picture to a large audience on social media,
04:55I'm not saying that everybody is severely manipulating their photos, but most people,
05:00they're going to add at least a little bit of sharpness.
05:03They're going to improve the lighting a bit.
05:04If I look closely in a lot of these pictures, I can see where people have darkened the lines
05:09around their abs, things like that.
05:10Now, there are still plenty of legit natural lifters out there with impressive physiques
05:14who don't overly manipulate their photos, but there's also a whole lot of fake natty
05:19Adobe gain specialists mixed in there as well.
05:22So if you want to use social media for educational purposes and follow people who are actually putting
05:27out useful content that directly assists your training and nutrition, follow me on Instagram.
05:32Or you just find physique pictures and videos to be motivational or entertaining, or you just enjoy watching
05:37and listening to certain personalities.
05:38Even if you understand that it's not a real world portrayal of how things are in reality, then that's fine.
05:45But do keep in mind that in a very high percentage of cases, it's exactly that.
05:49Okay?
05:49It's not a realistic portrayal of the real world because very often you're looking at somebody
05:53with top-year genetics on PEDs and who is only posting their very best, most optimized
05:59photos and videos.
06:00And sometimes those photos and videos are also very heavily edited as well.
06:03Red pill truth number three, if you are a natural lifter, which is the route that I recommend
06:08that the vast majority of people go, at the very least until you've been training solidly
06:13for a good five to ten years naturally.
06:15And even after that point, most people should still stay natural unless they truly require
06:19something like maybe TRT for legit medical purposes.
06:23But if you are a natural lifter, unless you've got those top one in a hundred genetics, you
06:29are not going to be very big and very lean at the same time.
06:33You're not going to have the best of both worlds.
06:35You've probably seen these kinds of memes floating around at some point and there is a lot of
06:39truth to this.
06:40If you're a natural lifter and you want to be really big, like a type of physique where
06:44you look significantly jacked even in clothes, you're going to need to sit at a slightly higher
06:49body fat percentage in order to do that.
06:51Probably in the higher teens, probably something like maybe 16 to 20% body fat.
06:56If you want to look really big, you're going to need to be okay with looking a bit softer.
07:00You'll look awesome with a shirt on, but you're going to look less impressive without a shirt
07:04on and less impressive in photos and videos if maybe you make a living from fitness and
07:09that is something that's important to you.
07:10It'll actually cause you to look smaller in photos and videos.
07:14And then on the flip side, if you want to be really lean, you know, ripped six packs,
07:18striations, veins popping out everywhere, not only are you likely going to end up with
07:23a variety of diet related side effects, okay?
07:26Less energy, more hunger, low libido, irritable mood, things like that.
07:30On top of that, you're also going to have to sacrifice a pretty decent amount of overall
07:34muscle fullness and size in order to get there.
07:37So you're going to look really impressive in a tank top and when you're shirtless and
07:40when you're posting things online, it's great for racking up those Instagram likes.
07:44But in real life, in regular clothes, you'll pretty much be flirting with, do you even
07:49and lift status?
07:50But bottom line guys, you're not going to be really big and really lean unless you're
07:55on a consistent dose of that high quality pharmaceutical grade creatine.
07:59And personally, my approach is to go somewhere in the middle.
08:01So not too big and too soft, not too lean and too small.
08:05I usually don't go below about 12% body fat and I rarely go above about 14% and I
08:11think
08:11that strikes a good middle ground balance between size and leanness as well as overall physical
08:16and mental functioning both in and out of the gym.
08:19Red pill truth number four involves the sharp diminishing returns that are at play when it
08:24comes to gaining muscle as a natural lifter.
08:26So muscle growth is not a linear process where for each set period of time, you just gain X
08:32amount of muscle and you just keep getting linearly bigger and stronger over time.
08:36Every pound of muscle that you gain will come at a slower rate and will be more difficult
08:41to achieve in comparison to the pound of muscle that came before it and that's because your
08:46body has genetic limits in place to prevent you from carrying too much muscle since muscle
08:50is metabolically expensive tissue that requires more energy to maintain as you gain more and
08:55more of it.
08:56So in the first year of proper training, you're going to make your newbie gains where muscle
08:59growth happens relatively quickly since it's a brand new stimulus for your body and you'll
09:03probably put on something like 50% of the total muscle mass that you're ever going to build assuming
09:07that you do things properly and consistently.
09:10And then from there, it should slow down by about half from year to year as a rough estimate.
09:16So year two, you might be at 75% of your total gains, year three, maybe 85% and then
09:21at years
09:21four and five and beyond, you should be right up near your natural limit if you've done things
09:26correctly.
09:26And that doesn't mean that you can't still make gains, but it's going to happen way, way
09:30more slowly.
09:31And it's really important at that point to be patient with things since you'll basically
09:35be lifting for an entire year just to gain a very small amount of additional muscle.
09:39If you're expecting to make gains at the same rate in year three or year four or five in
09:44comparison to year one and you're just shoveling back a ton of calories and being too aggressive
09:49in the gym trying to force new muscle growth, you're either going to end up fat or injured
09:54or fat and injured, which is probably not what you are aiming for.
09:58Red pill truth number five, switching gears a little bit and that's on the topic of supplements.
10:03Most supplements, not some, not a decent percentage, but most supplements do not work, period.
10:10And I say that as somebody who owns a supplement line and where it would actually be in my best
10:14interests to just hype the ever living crap out of supplements to get more people to buy
10:17them.
10:18There are a select few supplements that can be helpful for maximizing overall training performance,
10:24body composition, overall health.
10:25I use them personally and I've recommended them for many years.
10:28We currently have a pre-workout multivitamin and fish oil, which are three things that I've
10:32stood behind for many years.
10:34And we have a protein powder and a creatine on the way as well.
10:37But the bottom line is that the supplements that actually do work are very few and far between
10:42and they're just the icing on the cake after your training and your diet is fully dialed in.
10:46They're not the cake itself like a lot of people out there think.
10:50Ninety to ninety-five percent of the supplements being sold right now are complete bullshit and
10:54they're not actually going to do anything for you as far as building muscle and losing more
10:58fat is concerned.
11:00BCAAs, testosterone boosters, growth hormone boosters, fat burners, glutamine, advanced forms
11:06of creatine, high-tech protein powders, intra-workout supplements, CLA, the list just goes on and
11:14on.
11:14And then even within the categories of supplements that are worthwhile like a multivitamin, pre-workout,
11:20creatine blend, most companies don't even formulate those ones properly either.
11:24And the real truth is that a lot of these fitness influencers and YouTubers, I know it's
11:29not what people want to hear, but many of these people really don't have your best interests
11:33at heart, even though they might seem like they do on the surface.
11:36You know, they've got that big smile on their face.
11:38What's going on everyone, Vince here.
11:40They seem sincere or whatever, but the reality of this world is that people do in fact lie in
11:45order to make more money, as shocking as that might seem.
11:47And even for the fitness coaches out there who do have good intentions, many of them just
11:52aren't very knowledgeable about supplements in the first place.
11:54And so they just go ahead and they promote all this crap without even realizing that they're
11:58ripping their audience off.
11:59So don't take anybody's advice at face value.
12:02Be very skeptical.
12:03Do your own independent research, because if you don't, chances are that you're going to
12:07end up wasting a lot of money on a bunch of garbage that is ultimately providing you
12:10with little to no benefit and is really just a fairy tale.
12:13Okay, the right supplements in the right forms and the right dosages that can help to round
12:18out your overall fitness program.
12:19But most of what's out there is really just a straight up steaming pile of worthless stinky
12:25horseshit.
12:26Red pill truth number six, switching gears again in these last two are a bit more on the sort
12:31of mindset side of things.
12:32And number six is that regardless of how hard you work at this and how long you work at it
12:37for and how great the results are that you achieve, the unfortunate reality is that you're probably
12:42never going to be genuinely satisfied with your physique.
12:46As a beginner you might be thinking, you know, if I could just put on some muscle, lean down
12:50a bit, look even half as good as these guys are that I see on Instagram, that would be good
12:55enough and I'd be so happy with that.
12:57But that is really not how things actually work in the real world.
13:01I guarantee that is not what will happen.
13:02What actually happens is that as your physique improves, the bar for what you consider to
13:07be a good physique is just going to move along with it.
13:09And this applies to every area of life, not just fitness, because it's just how our brains
13:14are evolutionarily wired to keep us striving for more and more.
13:18With each new level that we reach, you know, each achievement that gets unlocked, whether it's
13:23fitness related or career related or maybe an athletic endeavor or really anything else that
13:28you're trying to improve at and that you're taking seriously, even if it's, you know, a video
13:31game that you're playing, once you achieve a new level, you'll get a temporary little burst
13:36of warm, fuzzy, good feelings.
13:38But pretty soon after that, that new level that you've achieved is just going to become
13:42your new normal.
13:43It won't satisfy you anymore.
13:45You'll mentally return to baseline and you'll just look ahead to the next level.
13:49You'll start comparing yourself to the people who are at that next higher level.
13:53You'll aim for that.
13:54Maybe you'll achieve it.
13:55And this cycle just goes on and on.
13:57And so I think it's more about just accepting that and learning how to sort of live in harmony
14:02with that rather than thinking that one day you'll have arrived and you'll be fully satisfied
14:06and fully content with everything since, sorry to break it to you, but it's just never going
14:11to happen.
14:12Which is why, like a lot of people say, it's more about learning to enjoy the process rather
14:16than getting overly hung up on the concrete external results.
14:20And then lastly, red pill truth number seven, the ultimate red pill related to the previous
14:25one as well, but looking at things in an even bigger picture standpoint, which is that building
14:30a lean and muscular body is not going to make you happy.
14:34Now to be clear, it can definitely improve your quality of life, consistent training, proper
14:40nutrition.
14:40Those are obviously great habits to have that will physically make you feel good by just
14:44optimizing your overall brain chemistry in general.
14:47And also when you feel good about how you look, you know, you feel confident in your
14:51appearance, you like the way your clothes fit, you feel like a reasonably attractive person.
14:56Yes, that will bring a certain level of satisfaction into your life that you didn't have previously.
15:01And I do encourage you to do it.
15:03You know, anybody who pretends that they don't care about how they look or that they wouldn't
15:06rather be healthy and active and in shape is straight up lying.
15:10However, it's not going to do what a lot of people think it's going to do for them.
15:14It's not some magic bullet where you're going to build this lean, strong aesthetic physique
15:19and all the women are going to come flocking to you and all the men will bow down and respect
15:24every time you walk into the room and you'll just be in this state of constant bliss over
15:28your amazing new chiseled features.
15:30Again, it just doesn't work like that in the real world.
15:32Just like making a bunch of money won't do that for you, buying material possessions won't
15:36do that for you, getting a bunch of girls will not do that for you.
15:39None of these external things are going to put you in some kind of permanent happy state.
15:43If there's anything in life that is going to bring you more lasting sort of genuine satisfaction
15:50or a higher degree of internal contentment, it's going to be the less sexy things like
15:56meaningful relationships, having a purpose of some kind, contributing to others, being
16:01in nature, doing activities you enjoy.
16:03And then the one that overlaps with fitness, which is physical exercise, good nutrition,
16:09proper sleep, things like that.
16:10Those are probably the things that will contribute more to your psychological well-being as opposed
16:15to having 3D delts or 9% body fat.
16:19So again, absolutely go ahead and build the body that you want.
16:22Look the way that you want to look.
16:24There's nothing wrong with that.
16:25I myself work really hard at it and I enjoy it and I get a feeling of satisfaction from being
16:30in good shape just even on a basic surface ego level.
16:34But don't think that it's going to fix you on some kind of fundamental level.
16:38It's not going to make you happy in the deepest sense if those other more key areas of your
16:42life, community, purpose, health, if those things aren't in order.
16:47If those things aren't in order, then you'll still be unhappy regardless of how aesthetic
16:51your physique might be.
