At a Gold Coast skatepark, people of all abilities are rolling in, gearing up and experiencing the thrill of skateboarding, many for the first time. Skaters say it s not just about the ride, but it’s about building confidence, courage and the pure joy of the sport.

00:02The whoops of joy say it all as wheelchair users speed around the skate park.
00:11Bobbie Welsh was born with a rare genetic condition.
00:15It affects her mobility.
00:16She needs a wheelchair to get around, but it's never affected her mindset.
00:21She will always have a go at anything.
00:23Mum Marie Welsh says discovering adaptive skateboarding has been transformative.
00:28It's brought her a whole new life really.
00:33And they do get some wonderful friendships with their carers and the other people with disabilities.
00:39It gives them a life.
00:41Skaters use this custom built frame on wheels to get around the park.
00:45These harnesses help keep skaters like Bobbie in place and give them stability.
00:50And the feet straps help to keep their feet in place on the board.
00:54Jessie Noonan is a professional skateboarder from the Gold Coast.
00:58I was coaching some young boys and their sister showed up to the park in a wheelchair.
01:03And I wanted to include her in their lesson.
01:05So I sort of rigged up a skateboard under her walking frame and got her skating straight away.
01:10In just eight years, hundreds of people living with disabilities have learned to skateboard.
01:16It changes people's lives.
01:17It gives them positivity.
01:19It gives them this insane sense of adrenaline they've never experienced in their life.
01:25And it opens the world of possibilities for them.
01:28For these skaters, anything feels possible.
01:31I hope you have to keep that down as far as I can build.
