When you have something stolen, you report it to the relevant authority, but if the theft happens in an unknown location, it can become more difficult. The ABC has spoken to several people who have had possessions stolen from their cars while being shipped interstate, with police hamstrung unwilling to investigate without knowing the jurisdiction in which the offence occurred.

00:02When Jordan Sunker shipped his car from Melbourne to Perth, the cost of transport wasn't the only price he paid.
00:09When I picked up my car, I opened the boot and half of the stuff was taken.
00:15Items worth thousands of dollars, including clothes and memorabilia, gone.
00:20When cars are shipped into state, they have to be unlocked at ports and on ships, so workers can on
00:25and offload them.
00:26When Jordan tried to report the theft to police in WA and Victoria...
00:31They basically didn't give much help, yeah, because they're unsure of where it happened.
00:37And yeah, so I was sort of stuck for options.
00:41Elu and Amanda Del Valle had a similar experience.
00:44They will just simply point the finger and say, go to Melbourne, you've got to report there.
00:49And then you will go to Melbourne police and they will say, no, you live in Perth now, so you've
00:54got to file the report there.
00:55If we have to say something somewhere in case somebody else is considering to send their car by ship, we
01:02don't want this to happen to anyone.
01:04WA police acknowledged this particular case was complicated because the jurisdiction where the offence occurred was unknown.
01:11Victoria police referred queries to the Australian Federal Police while also suggesting it could be a civil issue.
01:18Figuring out who is responsible for shipping theft is complicated because there are multiple companies involved in the process, with
01:25items potentially stolen from depots, ports or ships themselves.
01:30The possibility is that someone somehow can take advantage of the loopholes in the system.
01:36Transport company DASMAC says it's repeatedly raised the issue of cargo theft with police and government agencies.
01:42We'd like some clarity around which agency is in charge of these sorts of crimes so that we can have
01:49a process to report and they can be followed through.
01:52It's not a hard fix. It's just that no one wants to take responsibility.
01:55Until then, the safest option removing all valuables before transportation.
