00:00Nate in Euphoria is perhaps the most realistic character.
00:03Nate Jacobs isn't just a villain, he's probably the most disturbing character.
00:07Because it is extremely consistent.
00:08He is fascinating because everything about him is constructed.
00:11Nothing is left to chance.
00:12There is a central element to understanding his psychology, and that is his family.
00:16Even at a very young age, Nate discovered his father's sex videos.
00:19And it's a shock, a trauma.
00:21And above all, a completely distorted view of relationships.
00:24And from there, Nate associates intimacy with domination and shame.
00:28His father becomes both a role model and a threat.
00:31He fears this person, but unconsciously imitates them.
00:33And besides that, there's his mother.
00:35She is a maternal and feminine figure who is much more passive.
00:38She avoids conflicts, she minimizes them, and she seeks to appease conflicts rather than confront them.
00:42And that's where it all begins.
00:44Nate develops a very harsh view of women.
00:47He rejects what he perceives as weakness because it reminds him of what he sees in
00:50his mother.
00:51Which brings us to Maddie.
00:52His relationship with her is no coincidence.
00:54Maddie is strong, she asserts herself, she confronts him.
00:57She is exactly what he unconsciously expects: someone capable of resisting him.
01:01But there is a tipping point.
01:02As Nate takes on the role of man of the house, he changes.
01:06He no longer sees himself as a child, he sees himself as his father.
01:08And then, his expectations change.
01:09He is no longer looking for a woman who will stand up to him.
01:11He is looking for a woman who reinforces his illusion of control.
01:14And that's exactly where Casey comes in.
01:16With Casey, we see a completely different dynamic.
01:19She is gentler, she is more submissive, she is more dependent.
01:22It's a relationship that's much more like the one he observed through his parents.
01:25Nate doesn't really choose his relationships, he reproduces them over and over again.
