00:00What was your reaction when you found out your video went viral?
00:03Yeah, you know, it was a total surprise.
00:05And I want to thank you because, you know, I listen to Bloomberg like all the...
00:09Oh my gosh, we love it.
00:11I'm kind of fangirling here big time because, you know, like seriously, like you guys are like superstars to me.
00:18So I really appreciate it.
00:19I love this.
00:21But yeah, all the attention was totally unexpected.
00:24Because you've been doing these for a while, right?
00:26This like wasn't your first one.
00:28Yeah, yeah.
00:29No, I do videos for the Globe, like news reports, just like all the other reporters in the newsroom, you
00:33know?
00:34And, you know, my accent is a little bit harder than some of the others because I grew up in
00:39Boston, you know what I mean?
00:40So I was really shocked.
00:43But the thing is, is like, you know, what really shocked me more is just how positive everybody's feedback has
00:48been, you know?
00:49So it's been kind of restored my faith in like in media just to hear so many people like interested
00:54in the news and writing to me, you know?
00:57But it was the comments.
00:59I mean, I saw it before we even started talking about it in the newsroom and then it just kind
01:02of grew in group.
01:03But the comments were really awesome.
01:05And one of them was like, I want Emily Sweeney to be the only one allowed me to read the
01:09news to me.
01:09Like, can Emily Sweeney narrate the Iliad?
01:12Like, Emily Sweeney's voice in my head all the time.
01:14I love that Iliad.
01:15It was great.
01:17And now she's everywhere.
01:18Yeah, yeah.
01:19I mean, you know, for me to be the only one reading the news, I feel that's slightly extreme.
01:23But, you know, it has been heartening to hear that people are still interested in the news because, you know,
01:29for a long time, I don't know, you know, working at a legacy media organization, you know, it's been hard.
01:35You guys know.
01:36And, you know, it's been great to see just like this sudden interest in journalism again.
01:41That's it means a lot to me.
01:43Tell us about how you got into journalism.
01:44So I detect the Dorchester acts.
01:47I'm going to go micro.
01:48And I think I've pinpointed that correctly.
01:51How did you get into journalism?
01:52And what have you covered at the Globe?
01:54So you're doing this true crime reporting.
01:56Now you've written books as well.
01:57How did you get into that?
01:59Yeah, yeah.
01:59So I've written three books, two of them about organized crime.
02:04I write a lot about unsolved murders.
02:06I feel like a lot of people aren't aware of like how many unsolved homicides there are.
02:10And, you know, I think it's really important to draw awareness to the cases because sometimes it can help them
02:15get solved.
02:16So I do a lot of cold case reporting for the Globe.
02:19And now I've been doing a lot of video lately, you know, because we've just been getting like a lot
02:25of like great engagement from our audience.
02:27And it's growing.
02:29And we're going to roll with that.
02:30And, you know, I'm going to make videos until they tell me no.
02:33Well, speaking of rolling, you've been on rollerblades doing the news too.
02:37I mean, talk to me about the Boston accent because it's different from different regions where you are.
02:45Correct?
02:46Yeah, yeah.
02:47I mean, if you drill down, different neighborhoods have different accents.
02:49You know, I'm from Dorchester, which is like the biggest neighborhood in Boston.
02:53And, you know, how I talk, like I sound, well, to me, I sound totally normal.
02:57You know what I mean?
02:58Like, and that's how my mother, my brother has like an even stronger accent.
03:04Stronger than that.
03:05Yeah.
03:06And so, again, it was just a surprise to see, like, you know, everybody thought like in that news report
03:10that I was saying, I don't know.
03:12I'm like, I thought I was just talking regular.
03:14What accent?
03:15What accent?
03:15Look, I think as we talk about it, in a time when journalism is struggling to find its audience and
03:21find its feet, two things that stood out to me.
03:22One was you just came approach as really genuine and authentic.
03:26You came approach as someone who was being yourself.
03:28You didn't change out of your tracksuit.
03:29You weren't putting on airs.
03:30You were like, here's my story.
03:32Here's what we got.
03:33Here's what we talk about.
03:34Talk to us about how you guys are reaching a new audience with social media, especially reaching, working the legacy
03:40paper.
03:41Do you feel like you're making more of an impact and what that process is like?
03:45Yeah.
03:45So, I mean, absolutely.
03:46Because, you know, I definitely have gotten so many messages from, number one, younger people, you know, who, I mean,
03:53I'm not sure would even, like, you know, watch the news or, you know, pick up a newspaper or, you
03:58know what I mean?
03:58Yeah.
04:00And also people from, it's kind of strange, like, all over the world, like Australia, Ireland, Guam.
04:07I mean, people are writing saying, I'm following the Boston news.
04:10Like, so, you know, I just think it's great to draw attention to the great journalism the Globe is doing.
04:18And it's great that people are just even interested in news again, I feel like, just in general and, like,
04:23asking for headlines.
04:24Like, you know, you didn't do the headlines today.
04:25Where are they?
04:26Like, you know, it's been really great to see.
04:29So.
04:29Well, we've enjoyed the heck out of it.
04:31We got Duncan here in your honor.
04:34Duncan.
04:34We've got dunkies.
04:35What's your order?
04:36We should have asked in advance, I realize.
04:38You know, I mean, I usually go, like, Extra Lodge, coffee, you know, just black, iced, you know what I
04:45mean?
04:45You have a specific donut?
04:47You got a donut?
04:48You know, I ate so many jelly donuts from Dunk's that I have to put, I'm on hiatus.
04:55I also don't think those are TV friendly.
04:57They're too good.
04:58We're already trying not to spill coffee on ourselves.
