Police Chief Kevin Davis joins The Sports Junkies.
Transcript
00:00Fairfax County Police Chief, very prominent murder-suicide in Annandale yesterday.
00:07I mean, it's just horrible.
00:08Horrible. It wasn't yesterday, was it? Was it the day before?
00:10It was yesterday morning or late the night before.
00:14And Chief, is it true? Were there cameras all inside and you guys could kind of witness the whole thing?
00:21Did I hear that right? What did I hear?
00:25Hey, Eric. Good morning, guys.
00:26Hey, what's up?
00:27You're partially right. So the first name I want to say is Serena Fairfax.
00:32I know we're going to talk about Justin, but Serena, she's the victim, the mother.
00:38She was a dentist.
00:39She's a white. She's a dentist, prominent community member.
00:42A lot of people in the Fairfax County community were her patients.
00:46Yeah, right.
00:47So at some point during their contentious divorce, she installed cameras inside the home.
00:54So we're still in the process of going through those cameras that Serena had installed inside the home.
01:00But it was one of the two kids, teenagers, that called 911 during that chaotic moment.
01:06Oh, my God. The kids were there?
01:08And they stumbled upon it.
01:09And they didn't know that the father was upstairs.
01:13They just knew the mom was in the basement, right?
01:18Not exactly.
01:20They knew something happened.
01:22Many gunshots rang out inside that home.
01:24You can imagine how loud that is.
01:26Oh, yeah.
01:27And the 911 call was made that one of the two kids did find the mom.
01:33Oh, my God.
01:35So then we got there literally in less than two minutes.
01:39And when we came inside, obviously located the mom.
01:43She was deceased on the scene and then located Justin upstairs.
01:48Justin took his own life after he killed his wife.
01:52I mean, just a horrific deal.
01:55And I guess Justin's getting some, you know, he gets to run because, what, he run for governor or whatever
01:59it is.
02:00He's kind of a familiar name for folks.
02:01But there have been some issues, right?
02:03I mean, I think there have been some accusations.
02:05I'm not trying to kick the guy when he's down.
02:07But this is a guy who's been troubled.
02:09Is that right?
02:10Is that fair?
02:11Well, I would say the opposite.
02:13I would say that Justin Fairfax had a very bright star for many, many years.
02:19I mean, talk about his pedigree.
02:22DeMatha, Duke, Columbia Law School.
02:25He was elected lieutenant governor in the Commonwealth of Virginia, one of the most consequential states in America.
02:32In his mid-30s.
02:34I would say for the bulk of Justin's life, his star was on the rise.
02:39He ran into some accusations back in 2019 that seemingly, you know, dimmed his star.
02:46But you never would think that this would be the result of all that.
02:51And then, as far as divorces go, I don't know what the percentage is.
02:55Half of America ends up in a divorce.
02:56And so, you know, this is not a normal way to handle a messy or a contentious divorce.
03:05And as sensitive as suicide is, you know, it's horrible.
03:10But if you do that, don't take someone down with you, particularly the mother of your children.
03:15Chief Davis, before this incident, had there been any calls to the House for domestic disturbances that gave some, like,
03:23indicators that something like this could possibly happen?
03:26Or is this just out of the blue?
03:29Nothing to predict what happened yesterday.
03:32Nothing at all.
03:32But in January of this year, and I said this at my on-scene presser yesterday, in January, Justin actually
03:40called the police and alleged that Serena, his wife, had assaulted him.
03:45Our cops got there, and thanks to the cameras that Serena installed inside the home, they were able to determine
03:51that there was no assault at all.
03:54So we just wrote a police report, but there was no crime committed.
03:57So that's our only time we've ever interacted with the Fairfax family at the home.
04:03But again, a singular contact is no predictor of the tragedy that occurred yet.
04:09Of course.
04:10Here's a question for you.
04:11Just to follow up on that, the Washington Post story, I don't know if you saw that one, Cakes, said
04:16there was a time that he was, they didn't know where he was with his gun, something like that.
04:22And I can't remember the family member that was involved, but recommended that he get mental health.
04:26There were some concerns.
04:28Yeah, and the story said that he'd been drinking a lot in the last couple of years.
04:32Right, I had heard some of those reports, too.
04:34I'm not trying to slander a guy when he's down.
04:35It's tragedy all the way around.
04:38Well, let's remember, Eric, Justin Fairfax is now a killer.
04:42Yeah, I know, it's brutal.
04:43Yeah, no, no, yeah, right.
04:45And as much as we want to talk about his accomplishments, we've got to shy away from giving him too
04:53much spotlight.
04:54Believe me, I'm not trying to do that.
04:55I'm not trying to pump him up at all.
04:57I'm not trying to pump his tires, not at all.
05:01The fact, though, I'm a little confused.
05:04So they, filing for divorce or whatever, but they lived together or he was just visiting?
05:10They lived together, separate bedrooms.
05:13That's not unusual.
05:41That's not unusual.
05:45Otherwise, his life was heading in the wrong direction.
05:48But again, red flags, but no predictor of the carnage that occurred yesterday.
05:54But I just want to be clear.
05:56Is there, and this should never see the light of day, let's hope, but is there actual footage of the
06:02murder?
06:04I don't know yet.
06:06I know there's cameras inside.
06:07The camera footage that we're going through, our crime scene detectives will undoubtedly either depict something that happened inside that
06:17home.
06:18Remember, or I'll say this in case you don't know, Justin killed Serena in the basement of the home.
06:25So we don't think that there was a camera to capture that, but there's otherwise cameras inside the home that
06:31may have showed him coming and going.
06:33Got you.
06:34Just imagine the chaos of it all.
06:36We'll get it all.
06:37Yeah.
06:37And they'll never see the light of day, but I'll be glad to talk about it.
06:40But I just don't know that we have anything to capture the actual act.
06:44Yeah.
06:44Is there a camera in the bedroom where Justin Fairfax was found?
06:48Do you know that?
06:49I do not know that.
06:51Okay.
06:51I do not know that.
06:52But do you need the cameras?
06:54You know what happened.
06:55No, it's just a horrifying little detail.
06:57It's just a horrifying detail that's pretty morbid.
07:01Yeah, I say.
07:01I don't think anybody should see it.
07:03It'd be traumatizing.
07:04But it is a horrifying little detail that that might actually exist.
07:08That's all.
07:09Yeah.
07:09Yeah.
07:10And the kids, great kids.
07:12Unbelievable.
07:14Family.
07:15Thankfully, there's tons of family taking care of the kids.
07:19They do.
07:19So they have like aunts and uncles and I don't know, grandparents.
07:22I don't know.
07:23That's great.
07:23Grandparents.
07:24All of the above.
07:25All of the above.
07:26All right.
07:26That's good.
07:27Just great kids and they're going to live with this.
07:29The main thing now, I think, and we've got a victim services division that leans into all of us, too.
07:34Just helping out these kids and trying to get them through it.
07:37But it's unusual.
07:39I mean, this is a national story for someone who was a rising star politically.
07:44And it's a King Lear Shakespearean fall from grace.
07:49Well, yeah.
07:49His father, I think, was Harvard, right?
07:52So his father was Harvard educated.
07:54And you mentioned he goes, DeMatha, Duke, Columbia School of Law, just powerhouse schools.
08:01And then this happened years later.
08:03That doesn't affect you.
08:04That doesn't have no impact on your mental health, right?
08:07No indicator of that.
08:09Yeah.
08:10Everybody suffers from it.
08:11But yeah, certainly a story that everyone's paying attention to.
08:15And I just can't say enough how we have to remember Serena.
08:20Right.
08:21Anything good going on?
08:22Give us something good, Chief.
08:24You're also bad.
08:25Well, just to say, the mom, Serena, like I said, the dentist, she graduated from Duke as well.
08:32And then VCU Medical School.
08:34Right.
08:35No, of course.
08:36I mean, she deserves all the attention and sympathy.
08:39Very accomplished family.
08:41Tell me something good.
08:42I need to pick me up.
08:43This is like a brutal story.
08:45I think in my business, what's good news might sound like bad news with a cherry on top.
08:52We caught a guy who was dubbed a naked burglar who was breaking into houses.
08:56Oh, that's right.
08:57We did that story a few weeks ago.
09:00Yeah, we used our drone as first responder.
09:03We caught him.
09:04Oh, hold on.
09:05Now you've got to pump the brakes.
09:07He was caught by a drone?
09:08You guys just activated a drone?
09:10The surveillance.
09:10Love it.
09:11Love that.
09:12Well, we don't use the S word, but we activated, now we have drones that we can put up in
09:19the sky.
09:20And we had a bunch of detectives and cops out waiting for this guy to strike again at 4.45
09:26a.m.
09:27the other morning.
09:28And lo and behold, there he is.
09:30He's just wearing tennis shoes and a t-shirt on his head.
09:33And the drone actually followed him while the cops chased him.
09:38And we lost him during the foot chase.
09:41But the drone stayed on him.
09:43And the drone was able to see what house he went into.
09:46And from that, we were able to identify him.
09:49All right, I got to ask you a question.
09:50And lock him up.
09:51Did the drone stay on him because you had, like, one of your detectives driving the drone?
09:57Or was it, like, its own artificial intelligence and it locked in on the guy and just tracked him on
10:02its own?
10:02Yeah, it's both.
10:04And I invited Jason.
10:06And I don't know if Jason is kind enough to invite you guys to come with him to check out
10:10our real-time crime center.
10:12But the drone dispatches to a longitude and a latitude.
10:16Once the drone gets there, then a drone pilot takes over the drone.
10:22Gotcha.
10:22So, you know, imagine longitude, latitude.
10:24The drone hears keywords and radio transmissions and calls for service and just goes.
10:30Hey, can I fly the drone?
10:31If I come to the crime center, can I fly the drone?
10:34You go sit in there in a chair.
10:36Jake, absolutely.
10:37Yes.
10:38I can imagine.
10:39It's like a war games deal, right?
10:41You go into the crime center.
10:42This is what I'm guessing, right?
10:43And you got a bunch of, like, video game nerds.
10:44Yeah, can I apprehend a perp with the drone?
10:47I hope you can.
10:49That's fantastic news.
10:50You guys can do it.
10:50It's a game changer.
10:51It's safer outcomes for cops.
10:54It's a safer outcome for a criminal.
10:56Because they're apprehended faster, and they're not, you know, continuing their nonsense.
11:01Yeah, good luck trying to commit a crime and getting away with it.
11:03Yeah, I'm sure.
11:04You can't even knock off a stranger anymore.
11:06I mean, if a drone doesn't get you, one of the officers is going to sick a dog on you.
11:10It's going to grab you by the arm.
11:11It's going to throw you down.
11:12They're going to cuff you.
11:13So, Chief Davis, you famously played football at DeMatha, and you are a Commanders fan.
11:19With the No. 7 pick, Chief Davis wants the Commanders to take.
11:24Well, I don't know that I famously played football.
11:27I was on a famous team, and I was a role player.
11:32You know, I think we need a tight end.
11:35And I don't have any names.
11:37We just got Chick.
11:37We just got Chick.
11:39You got DeMatha tight end.
11:40You might want to do some detective work on the guy.
11:42We signed a good free agent, Chief.
11:46We signed a good free agent.
11:47Is he in his 20s?
11:49Yes.
11:49Yes, yeah, yeah.
11:50He's going to be good.
11:51He's going to be a stud.
11:51Are you going to have two tight ends?
11:53It's true.
11:54Give me this.
11:54Here's my No. 2.
11:55I'm trying to say something different.
11:57Give me a left tackle.
11:58I'm not sold on this guy.
12:00We're paying all this money.
12:01Hold on.
12:02You got to be a horrible cheat.
12:06Stick with police work.
12:07He's got two barrels to take.
12:09Stick with being a Chief.
12:11You know what?
12:13Don't go anywhere near Redskins Park.
12:15You couldn't work for the Kansas City Chiefs, but you can be the Chief of Police at Fairfax.
12:18Don't go anywhere near Ashford.
12:20Stay out of Ashford.
12:20Here's my point.
12:22I'm going to say he's overrated.
12:24He almost jumps off sides every snap.
12:26He's not a Tunsil guy.
12:27Every snap.
12:28He's not a Tunsil guy?
12:29He said he wants a left tackle.
12:30He's an old pro.
12:31Didn't they just give him a bag, too?
12:33Yeah, he's got to step in.
12:34He's considered one of the top two or three in the league.
12:36Like, Chief Dave's unlike him.
12:39Y'all remember me in November when he's on the sidelines milking his injuries.
12:44Okay.
12:44I remember when Jake was sacked three times.
12:49He's doing a weird, different bit.
12:50He is.
12:51So, they got two former Terps.
12:53They got the one from DeMatha, and they got Chig.
12:55Yeah.
12:56Tight end.
12:57Nick Cross.
12:58Hey, I know Nick Cross because he graduated a year before with one of my sons.
13:02Right, right.
13:03Yeah, yeah.
13:03Yeah, Nick Cross is the stuff.
13:04Hey, you know what?
13:05Do they need a quarterback, too?
13:07While you're at it.
13:09For things the commanders don't need.
13:10I'll let you know.
13:12I'll let you know if I see him on the field.
13:14I mean.
13:15That's kind of a good response by him.
13:17I can.
13:18All right.
13:19He pushed back on that.
13:20But left tackle and tight end.
13:22No, no, no.
13:23Wow.
13:23Hey, Chief.
13:24Hey, Chief.
13:24You know what?
13:25He's definitely working too much.
13:27Hey, people are high on Kenyon Sadiq.
13:29Okay, that's fine.
13:30Not at seven.
13:31All right.
13:32All right.
13:32I withdraw my tight end.
13:34I withdraw my tight end, but I'm staying with left tackle.
13:37I don't know.
13:38Bizarre take.
13:40I mean, Josh Connolly might be the left tackle of the future.
13:43If Adam Peters selects a big, fat guy who plays left tackle with the number seven pick,
13:48I don't know what I'm going to do.
13:50What?
13:51Yeah.
13:52Well, Trent Williams.
13:53Don't you all agree?
13:54Trent Williams is one of the worst things we ever let go.
13:57Sure.
13:57Yeah, completely.
13:58This guy's a Hall of Famer.
14:00Yeah.
14:00Champ Bailey, Trent Williams.
14:02You know who else is probably a Hall of Famer?
14:04Laramie Tunsil.
14:05He's probably close.
14:07Yeah, and he'll be wearing a Seahawks jersey in the Hall of Fame or wherever he's from.
14:13You know what?
14:14He's got a lot of crime chases.
14:16Yeah, he's got a lot of crime chases.
14:17A lot of crime chases.
14:18He's got a lot of crime chases.
14:19He's got a lot of crime chases.
14:19Too much paperwork.
14:20Yeah, yeah, yeah.
14:21He's buried in paperwork.
14:22All right.
14:23Hey, hey, hey, hey.
14:24Drabby, send him a cheat sheet or something.
14:26Get him up the seat.
14:27I blame J.P. for asking him.
14:28J.P., what are you doing?
14:30He's a football guy.
14:31I thought he was a football guy.
14:33His answers did entertain me.
14:35All right, Chief.
14:36Thank you, buddy.
14:38All right, guys.
14:39Remember, I'm flying the drone.
14:41Despite all the goofing, I'm still flying that drone.
14:43Bunch of cops are going to be joking on him today.
14:46I'm going to find a left tackle with that drone.
14:48Yeah, yeah, exactly.
14:49Hey, that morning meeting is going to go swimmingly for him.
14:53All right, thank you, Chief.
14:53Please, Joan, on the Chief.
14:55Be careful out there.
14:57Be careful out there, guys.
14:57He's got some wacky NFL draft takes.
15:00You want to get a tight end or just sign one, and he wanted to go left tackle.
15:03Left tackle!
15:03I mean, that might be one of the two or three most serious spots on the team.
15:06I mean, if you lost Tunsell, left tackle.
15:09Man.
15:10You know, if you think Connerly can't ultimately move there.
15:12Listen, all kidding aside, I get it.
15:14I watch games sometimes, and I go, this guy looks like he's jumping off.
15:18You get caught up in things, like your own takes.
15:23I've done that before.
15:24It looks like this guy's jumping every time.
15:26I'm sick of this guy.
15:27I can see that.
15:28You know what?
15:29When we come back, let's talk about what Adam Peters said.
15:32And if the commanders will be drafting for need, or maybe they do draft something they
15:38don't need, which Chief Davis is proposing.
15:40We'll get into that next here on The Junkies.
15:43We'll get into that next.
15:43We'll get into that next.
15:43We'll get into that next.
