00:00Since 2013, the Ocean Cleanup, an NGO, has been working to rid the seas of plastic.
00:06The organization relies on AI to precisely locate waste and predict its movement.
00:11Using Amazon's systems, researchers analyze satellite imagery, drone footage and sensor
00:17data to identify ocean zones with the highest plastic density.
00:22Our impact has grown because we've gotten better.
00:28So our existing deployments have gotten better by learning why does some plastic still leak
00:36and why do we sometimes not catch it and we've been able to learn by doing.
00:41The AI calculates where plastic accumulates and how it drifts.
00:45This allows clean-up ships to head straight for the target.
00:49A 2.2 km floating barrier positioned with AI assistance is set up to intercept the waste.
00:54The system optimizes the route through garbage patches and helps minimize any loss of collected
01:00plastic.
01:02The technology learns from every single mission, becoming increasingly efficient.
01:06The further we progress, the more impact we're having as well.
01:11In the past six months, we collected more plastic than in the preceding 11 years combined.
01:21So, as we progress, the impact that we're having on the world is growing exponentially.
01:31Beyond the oceans, the project is targeting rivers too.
01:35Research shows that about 80% of ocean plastic enters the sea via some 1,000 rivers.
01:43To combat this, the NGO developed so-called interceptors.
01:47Solar-powered autonomous systems stationed at heavily polluted river mouths.
01:52Equipped with sensors, they detect trash buildup at the barriers.
01:56Conveyor belts then shuttle the waste into containers.
01:59When a container is full, it automatically sends an alert, all without human input.
02:06Formally, our goal is to reduce the amount of plastic in the ocean by 90% before 2040.
02:12We're working hard to be faster than that.
