00:00:00There's a tricky anti-rodent disc to make sure no rat is aboard.
00:00:04Rats usually get on a boat via mooring chains, so this disc fits onto them.
00:00:09And no rodent can go on a voyage.
00:00:12Jewelry is often sold in small pouches.
00:00:14They actually have a hidden purpose.
00:00:17They help prevent tarnish.
00:00:18Most retailers assure that the ring or whatsoever was sold is safe and secure.
00:00:23In most supermarkets, oranges usually come in mesh bags.
00:00:28Well, those bags don't really have any hidden purpose, but you can turn it into a great
00:00:32scrubbing tool.
00:00:33Just tie it up and see how it works next time you have an extra greasy frying pan.
00:00:38You don't need to scoop the jam out of a double yogurt container section.
00:00:42This type of plastic is quite flexible, so you just need to fold it in half and pour
00:00:47the jam directly into the yogurt section.
00:00:50The hidden function of a cup plunger is actually that it was meant to be used for sinks.
00:00:55Yeah, it works for toilets too, but you can keep an extra one to unclog the sink in case
00:01:00you need it.
00:01:01An extra hole at the upper part of the sink has multiple hidden functions.
00:01:06First, in case someone forgets to close the tap, the water won't overflow, and the bathroom
00:01:11won't get flooded.
00:01:12Second, thanks to that hole, the water drains faster as it gives an escape for the air helping
00:01:18the water flow down.
00:01:20Most metallic zippers have a hidden lock inside them to save them from awkward situations,
00:01:25such as an undone fly.
00:01:27Don't leave the zipper handle in an upward position.
00:01:29When you pull it downwards, it automatically locks.
00:01:32It's all thanks to those tiny grooves hidden underneath the handle.
00:01:36Bath foam isn't only for fun or a nice smell.
00:01:40It also helps regulate the temperature.
00:01:42The bubbles keep the water hot, so you can enjoy a bath a bit longer.
00:01:45Anyway, it works for acrylic bathtubs only.
00:01:48Those made of metal lose heat really fast either way.
00:01:52Escalator brushes aren't for keeping your shoes clean and polished.
00:01:56It might be tough to apply wax right on that brush while the escalator's moving.
00:02:00It's for our safety.
00:02:02Brushes won't let you come close to the edge, so a long coat or boot-cut jeans won't
00:02:07end up in between the steps.
00:02:09Originally, golf balls were smooth.
00:02:11They have a dimpled surface now because players noticed that overused balls with damages flew
00:02:17better than brand new ones.
00:02:18At some point, manufacturers started producing balls with dimples.
00:02:24If you take a box of aluminum foil, you'll see tabs you can press on the side.
00:02:29They keep the foil straight and prevent it from rolling.
00:02:31It's also easier to tear off some amount of foil thanks to those tabs.
00:02:36Jerry cans have three handles for a reason.
00:02:39It's a smart designer move, so when you carry it alone, you use only the central handle to
00:02:44distribute the weight evenly.
00:02:45But your friend wants to help you out.
00:02:47Each of you grabs the side handle.
00:02:49Two flat prongs you can see on standard plugs used in North and Central America make sense.
00:02:55But how about those holes near the tips?
00:02:57Thanks to them, the outlet firmly grips the plug so that it won't loosen or fall out
00:03:02of the socket.
00:03:03It's sometimes irritating when you haven't used the entire stick of deodorant.
00:03:07There's a little bit more left, but it's hard to reach it.
00:03:11Okay, the trick is easy.
00:03:12Unscrew the bottom, take a pencil, and force it underneath that moving platform.
00:03:17That way, you'll push what's left of the deodorant out.
00:03:21There's a number put on the side of many cosmetic products.
00:03:24It isn't picked randomly.
00:03:25It tells you how long your product will last after you've opened it.
00:03:29This is why it has an open jar for a graphic symbol.
00:03:32A linch roller is good at removing those tiny fibers, but you can also use it to clean other
00:03:37stuff.
00:03:38For example, when you want to remove the dirt from the utensil tray in your dishwasher,
00:03:42simply take your sticky linch roller and put it into each compartment, and all the crumbs,
00:03:47dirt, and leftovers are all gone.
00:03:50Kings depicted on playing cards are real historical characters.
00:03:53Spades, King David, clubs, Alexander the Great, hearts, Charles the Great, diamonds, Julius Caesar.
00:04:03Rings used to be more than a stylish accessory.
00:04:06The nobility used rings as a seal.
00:04:08Archers wore rings to protect their fingers from bowstring injuries, while needlewomen from needle
00:04:14pricks.
00:04:16Detachable headrests in cars are all about safety.
00:04:19If you pull it out of a seat, you'll see two pretty sturdy bars.
00:04:22If you ever get locked or trapped in a car, you can get out of there smashing the window with
00:04:27these bars.
00:04:28A little arrow next to the refueling indicator on the car's dashboard indicates which side of the
00:04:33vehicle has fuel tank openings.
00:04:36It's useful when you need to refuel a rented car.
00:04:39You are probably using shampoo wrong all the time.
00:04:42Well, the main thing you should know is that you don't apply it directly on your hair.
00:04:46You gotta apply it onto the roots only.
00:04:49The foam that you make is enough to clean your hair.
00:04:52A button on the reverse side of a shirt collar is needed to hold a tie in place.
00:04:57Anyway, this button was designed for slim ties that are not that popular today,
00:05:01so this button is only an element of design.
00:05:04A cotton pads pack has those strings on it to hang it on some hook or holder.
00:05:09There's no need to untighten and tighten the pack again.
00:05:12Look at the bottom.
00:05:13It has a perforated line.
00:05:15Tear along it and just pull out a cotton pad from a hanging pack.
00:05:19It's a myth that the red side of the eraser is for pencil and the blue one is for ink.
00:05:24The blue gets rid of mistakes on thicker types of paper only.
00:05:28It works both for pencil and even ink, but make sure the paper is really thick.
00:05:33But that blue little thing can do so much more.
00:05:35It can polish your jewelry, clean your electronics.
00:05:38For example, the screen of your cell phone.
00:05:40You know those irritating sticker residues that won't peel off?
00:05:44Eraser helps there too.
00:05:45Same as with cleaning scuffed up suede or dirt you have on your walls.
00:05:49There's no need to tear one of its edges on stick sachets.
00:05:52The right way is to tear them down the middle.
00:05:55You say it's not a big difference, but at least there's less mess with those torn paper bits.
00:06:00A small V-patch at the bottom of the collar helps put on the sweater without losing any shape over
00:06:05time,
00:06:05because it's made of a double layer of webbing material, just like waistbands and cuffs.
00:06:11To avoid spilling juice right onto your t-shirt, try pouring it from the other side of the carton.
00:06:16This way, it sloshes less and it's easier to control.
00:06:20To enjoy fresh and soft peanut butter, store it upside down.
00:06:24This way, the oils won't stay on the bottom all the time and distribute evenly in the jar.
00:06:30Yeah, you've heard before that a drawer beneath your oven is there for
00:06:33keeping the food warm if the guests are running late.
00:06:36Hey, you can also slow cook on lower temperatures in that drawer.
00:06:40Automatic lip liners and eye pencils sometimes have a sharpener installed in the package.
00:06:46The lid on the back part of the pencil doesn't only reveal the color.
00:06:49You can pull it out and sharpen up the product.
00:06:53Grocery cart loops help organize all the stuff in your cart better,
00:06:56so you can enjoy your supermarket trip.
00:06:59You don't want to put your brand new fancy white jacket in a cart next to carrots and onions, huh?
00:07:04Fruit stickers know everything about your apple's past.
00:07:07A five-digit number where the first number is nine is a good sign.
00:07:11It's an organic product.
00:07:13A four-digit number starting with a three or four means it was conventionally farmed.
00:07:19If the number starts with an eight and there are five digits, it's best to leave it on the shelf.
00:07:24Metal buttons on jeans, also known as rivets,
00:07:27help make the pockets more durable when miners would fill them with heavy tools.
00:07:31They're still helpful today. Even if you don't store anything heavy in your pockets,
00:07:35rivets strengthen the seams and make your jeans last longer.
00:07:39All Tic Tac containers are designed to dispense one Tic Tac every time you open it.
00:07:44The lid has the same shape as the candy. Turn the container upside down,
00:07:49gently shake it and slowly open it. You'll notice only one candy stuck between those lid grooves.
00:07:54So if you just open the container and shake it until five or even more candies fall into your mouth,
00:08:00it means you've been eating Tic Tacs wrong all this time.
00:08:06So grab your phone. Good. Now turn it around.
00:08:09You see that little dot between the camera and the flash?
00:08:13That's a tiny microphone. Bet that's something you didn't know.
00:08:17What's it doing there? Well, when you're on a phone call,
00:08:20this little guy is busy at work, reducing the amount of background noise other people hear when
00:08:25you talk. That's right. If it wasn't for this, calls wouldn't be as nearly as crisp as they are now.
00:08:32You're lost in the woods and you're rushing to get back to camp.
00:08:37You suddenly remember you've got something that can help.
00:08:40You grab one of your chest straps from your backpack and whistle on it.
00:08:45Yup, that's right. A lot of bags have this feature in them,
00:08:49especially the ones made for the outdoors. It isn't long before you hear the call of one of your
00:08:54friends and you follow them back to the warm campfire, saved by this cool bit of design.
00:09:01If you're a curious person, you might have wondered what that little pocket in your jeans is doing
00:09:06there. You know, the one that's inside the bigger pocket. People often use it to store coins and bills,
00:09:13but it's not meant for that. It's actually designed to store your pocket watch safely.
00:09:18Huh? Maybe that's where the name pocket watch comes from.
00:09:23You finally arrive home after a long day's work. You understandably don't feel like cooking,
00:09:29so you sit on the couch and watch a bit of TV and order some takeout. How about Chinese? Ah,
00:09:36perfect.
00:09:37There's the doorbell. That has to be your food! It smells delicious!
00:09:42Wait! Before you grab the plates, do this instead. Open your Chinese food container on the table.
00:09:48It becomes the perfect plate. And it's cardboard. Which means no cleaning either!
00:09:55The can of soda you got with your food has a cool feature too.
00:09:59Look at the tiny metal tab there, the one you used to open the can. Guess what? You can fit
00:10:05your straw in
00:10:06there. In fact, that's exactly what they're made for. Go ahead, try it for yourself.
00:10:12If you're not at your computer, take a look at your keyboard right now. If you're not, that's okay.
00:10:18Here's one on the screen. The keycaps are arranged in what's called the QWERTY layout,
00:10:23named after the first six keycaps below the numbers. As it turns out, it wasn't always this way. They used
00:10:30to
00:10:30be laid out alphabetically, which would make more sense when you think about it. The alphabetical
00:10:35layout fell out of use because long ago, there were things called typewriters. Remember those?
00:10:42You press down a key, and a type bar would fly out, hitting an inked ribbon and stamping a letter
00:10:48on the piece of paper. Eventually, typists got good at this and typed faster. Too fast.
00:10:54The type bars would eventually get caught in a log jam with each other, ruining the flow. To fix this
00:11:00problem, they made keyboards with randomized keycaps. The new layout actually worked better because it
00:11:07made typing harder, helping to slow typists down and prevent the type bars from getting stuck. Much
00:11:12better! Today, no type bars. No typewriters, mostly. People are still fast nowadays, but you just can't
00:11:20help but wonder who was faster though, us or them. Keyboards have another hidden feature too. Have you
00:11:27ever noticed that the F keycap and the J keycap have little bumps on the bottom of them? As it
00:11:32turns out,
00:11:33they're there to help people figure out where they are on the keyboard without having to take their eyes
00:11:38off the screen. Grabbing a takeaway cup of coffee at your favorite cafe might be just what you need to
00:11:45fully wake up in the mornings. When you get back home or to work though, you might be afraid to
00:11:51stain
00:11:51your desk when you put the steaming hot coffee down. Worry not, your plastic lid isn't only good for
00:11:57keeping your coffee hot, it also doubles as a coaster. In fact, they're the perfect size to hold a cup.
00:12:04Try it for yourself. This one's going to come in handy if you're a home cook. If you're like me,
00:12:10you might have a bit of trouble deciding how much pasta you need for just one serving.
00:12:16Well, if you've got a pasta scoop, grab that. Most people don't know what the little hole in the
00:12:22middle is for and assume it's supposed to help with water drainage or something. It turns out that
00:12:27it helps you measure out a perfect serving. Just see how much dry spaghetti you can fit in the hole
00:12:33and use that as one portion. Out of the store buying coat hangers,
00:12:39you might notice that the plastic ones feel cheaper than the wooden ones.
00:12:43There's a good reason for this. Wooden hangers are made out of cedar wood.
00:12:47The big difference between the two is that the wooden ones repel bugs and moths.
00:12:54They're stronger and last longer too. Perfect for things that might stay in your closet for a long time.
00:13:01When you brush your teeth, you might have noticed that your toothbrush has blue bristles.
00:13:05They're not just there for show. In fact, they're there to tell you when it might be time to switch
00:13:11toothbrushes. These bristles lose their strength and color when the brush has been worn down,
00:13:17letting you know that it's time to get rid of it.
00:13:21Microwaves often look a bit like mini TVs, especially ones where you can clearly see the
00:13:26black film around them. This is actually a really important feature that's used to keep the radiation
00:13:32from slipping away. They're called Faraday cages, if you want to get technical.
00:13:37This is why you can stand next to a microwave without melting into a puddle.
00:13:42That's not to say you should stand in front of the microwave and watch your food heat up,
00:13:47but at least you know you won't grow an extra ear or something. Okay, not really.
00:13:52Some ovens have a drawer under them. It's tempting to use this to store random
00:13:57junk you don't use often, but there's a better use for it. Instead, this should be used to help
00:14:02keep the food that's waiting to be served hot. You can take it out of the oven and store it
00:14:07right
00:14:07in this drawer, keeping your oven free for you to carry on cooking.
00:14:13Now, you're on a plane looking around trying to pass the time before takeoff.
00:14:17When you examine the window, you notice this has a little, very tiny hole on its bottom.
00:14:23Don't worry, it's not broken. It's there to relieve the pressure that builds up over time as the plane
00:14:29goes up and down. It also lets the air flow through it. Now, raise your hand if you've ever ridden
00:14:35on
00:14:35an escalator and scrubbed your shoes on its bristles. Hey, I'm guilty of doing that. Maybe more than I
00:14:41should. It's not there to clean your shoes, though. It's an important safety measure. It stops your
00:14:47shoelaces, clothing, and other stuff from getting stuck in there, avoiding a nasty scene when you go
00:14:53to get off. Sometimes a piece of fabric comes with your new clothing. It usually comes along with the
00:14:59extra buttons in a little plastic bag. You might think it's just a piece of fabric to use for future
00:15:05patching, in case you rip it. But that isn't its purpose at all. It's actually supposed to be put
00:15:11in the washing machine to test how it reacts to various washings. Now, you don't have to worry about
00:15:17shrinking your new, expensive coat because you know how it'll react to the wash.
00:15:22Bubbles! Who doesn't love bubbles? Most people have fond memories with bubble blowers as a kid.
00:15:28But as adults, the closest thing we can get to recapturing that feeling is with bubble baths.
00:15:34After a hard day at work, there's nothing better than dipping into a nice warm bubble bath.
00:15:39Right, guys? And the bubbles do more than just clean you. If they're high-quality bubbles,
00:15:44they'll serve as a heat insulator. So they make sure that your bath stays warm for longer.
00:15:52Boxes of chocolate sometimes have these mysterious holes in them. When I'm eating a box, or two,
00:15:58I usually ignore them and take out the chocolate by pressing the bottom of the plastic. But it turns
00:16:04out that I've been doing it wrong the whole time. If you press one of the holes, the chocolate comes
00:16:10right out. I'm certainly going to start doing this from now on.
00:16:15Here's another one from the kitchen. The handle on a pot will often have a hole in it. Most people
00:16:21use this to hang them on a nail on the wall as an easy storage method. The hole has another
00:16:27use too.
00:16:28When you're cooking, you can use this handle to hold your wooden spoon or whatever else you might
00:16:33be cooking with. This makes sure you don't make a mess when you put it down.
00:16:39Glass bottles usually come with a cap in them. Well, duh! Otherwise, the liquid would just spill.
00:16:45In this cap, there's a plastic liner that seemingly has no purpose, right? Wrong. It's a seal!
00:16:53No, not a seal. A seal! It's the kind that helps keep your drink fizzy. Ah, just the refreshment I
00:17:01needed.
00:17:02A lot of doorknobs are made out of brass, and it's not by chance. They're made out of this specific
00:17:08material because it's bacteria's worst enemy. That's right, it destroys them. Perfect for those
00:17:14who want to keep a clean house and avoid germs. Hey, you want to fish?
00:17:22You know, there are all sorts of amazing things you can do with products already lying around the house
00:17:28that were meant for other things. We'll explore some of those, plus everyday items that have
00:17:34other purposes you may not be aware of. I'm also in a silly mood, so hey, let's have some fun!
00:17:41Many pairs of kitchen scissors today have a serrated opening where the handles and blades meet. You can
00:17:48use this as an herb stripper to de-stem difficult herbs like thyme, rosemary, and chives. Saves you a
00:17:55lot of time trying to pick the leaves off by hand. And if you're short of a vase, you could
00:18:00present
00:18:01roses to your significant other this way. Just be careful when you're pointing the sharp end.
00:18:07The metal tab on soda cans can be flipped around. You can slip a straw in place so you don't
00:18:13have to
00:18:13hold it up to your mouth. This stay-on tab replaced the pull ring tab created in the early 60s.
00:18:19You
00:18:20remember those, don't you? Those could be quite sharp and easily discarded where they could be a
00:18:25menace for others. Now you can pop your straw straight into one. Also means you can produce some
00:18:32bubbles and make a mess. Sometimes, when you purchase an article of clothing, you receive
00:18:38a plastic baggie with an extra button and a swash of fabric. While the fabric is clearly used to patch
00:18:45holes, it can also be used to test the effects of various cleaners on certain surfaces. It's handy
00:18:51too to test wash cycles before using them to wash the whole garment. And if you want to clean your
00:18:58nose
00:18:58with it, that suggestion never came from me. You can use a screwdriver for leverage if you're
00:19:05having trouble lifting or moving something. Some also have a hexagonal shape handle that fits inside
00:19:11a wrench or spanner. You can use it to improve torque and, again, for leverage. A little easier
00:19:17on your hands. Some of us aren't that strong. Or maybe that's just me. Rubber bands are great for
00:19:24many things. But if you have a bottle that's hard to open, you can wrap the band around it for
00:19:30a
00:19:30better grip. Escalators have those fluffy black brushes for a similar reason that some have yellow
00:19:37lines on their steps. To try and deter people from getting too close to dangerous places. People don't
00:19:43always take notice, and sometimes clothing can drape close to a point where the step meets the edge or
00:19:49skirt. The brush is a little barrier to help prevent this from happening. They can also catch
00:19:55bits of fluff and prevent other small things from falling down into the gaps.
00:20:01Your average pair of jeans has several features that are both functional and somewhat sentimental.
00:20:07The meadow rivets around the pockets help secure the stress points. This ensures they last a bit
00:20:13longer than average, though not all jeans have them. Many still have a tiny pocket, directly above the
00:20:21main pocket. This was originally meant to hold a pocket watch. Even though pocket watches are mostly
00:20:27a thing of the past, many people still use this space to store coins, rings, or even a portable USB.
00:20:36Now, this may seem a little obvious, but if you've ever wondered what all the notches are in a car
00:20:41tire, it's for traction on the road. However, there are also a good indicator if your tire is getting
00:20:48too worn down. If those notches aren't so deep anymore and are almost flush with the road, it's
00:20:55time to replace them. If you don't, the next time you try to stop suddenly at a stop sign,
00:21:00you might be surprised to find your car has turned into a giant roller skate.
00:21:06Those takeaway containers most associated with Chinese restaurants are designed to not only carry
00:21:12your food home, but to store them in the fridge. They double as a plate, as you can eat straight
00:21:18out of them and don't have to worry about dirty dishes. Yay! They were actually patented way back
00:21:25in 1894 to transport freshly shucked oysters and were known as oyster pails. They were later adapted to
00:21:33use as leak-proof containers for food. While you're sitting on an airplane and looking out the window,
00:21:40you may have noticed those little holes, or in some instances, a small singular opening near the
00:21:46bottom. This is called a breather hole, and no, it's not for you. It's designed to equalize the
00:21:52difference in air pressure which builds up between the pressurized cabin and the atmosphere outside,
00:21:57especially during high altitudes. It also releases moisture from between the panes to avoid frost
00:22:05from forming on the windows and obstructing that all-important view. Sorry, but it looks like you
00:22:11won't be drawing a smiley face on it anytime soon. This was first introduced way back in 1956 by a
00:22:18company
00:22:19in Japan. Pretty cool, huh? They got their inspiration from snap-off rows on chocolate bars. Just don't get the
00:22:26two mixed up. One doesn't taste good. When it comes to measuring tape, almost every reel has an empty
00:22:34slot in the metallic end. This is called a nail grab, so you can attach it to a nail or
00:22:40screw. A handy
00:22:42trick to do measurements without requiring someone else to hold it in place. Ooh, very nifty.
00:22:49Bobby pins have grooves on one side to hold your hair in place better. Crazy notion, huh? The straight
00:22:56side goes face up while the grooves go down against your head. They're called bobby pins because of
00:23:02the bobbed hairstyle which was popular in the 1920s, though the pins were invented in the 19th century.
00:23:09The look is gone, but the pins remain. Please take them out before you wash your hair as they don't
00:23:16look great stuck to your fingers. If you've been in a car or a bus and noticed the textured black
00:23:22dots
00:23:23baked into the black edges, you've probably worked out that it's not there for its pretty looks.
00:23:28It's called FRIT, a ceramic paint. Its main purpose is to protect the window from ultraviolet rays.
00:23:36It also creates a rough surface for the adhesive to cling to.
00:23:40Now, if you see a pink lump of adhesive in the corner, please do not touch it. It's actually someone's
00:23:47old bubble gum. If you take a look at the bottom of the lock, chances are you'll see one or
00:23:54two
00:23:54little holes. This is to let water out from the inside that may have been trapped due to rain.
00:24:00This mini-draining capability prevents the inner working from rusting over or freezing in place if
00:24:07the weather is very cold. If, in another situation, the lock becomes stuck, you can ease an oil-based
00:24:14product inside to lubricate the lock and get it working again. If you've lost the key and want to
00:24:22ease your frustrations, you can yell into the holes. It won't do anything to unlock it, but it may help
00:24:28you feel a little better. Some dress shirts have a fabric loop on the back. You guessed it, it's used
00:24:35for hanging the shirt up. The loops were reportedly first used in the navy, as it was easy to simply
00:24:41hang
00:24:42them on the wall. During the 1960s in colleges, the fashion of the day was to wear the shirt buttoned
00:24:49all the way to the top, which made them difficult to hang. So designers began putting the loop on the
00:24:55back. If the student removed the loop, it signified that they were going steady in a relationship.
00:25:01Unless your friend ripped one off for a prank, now everyone's asking whom you're with.
00:25:06There's a little more to this story, but we haven't got time to hang around.
00:25:12And yes, that's a bad pun. On purpose. It's what I do.
00:25:17Ever wondered why coins have those little ridges along the edge? It's a leftover from earlier times
00:25:24when they were worth more. Counterfeiters could easily file the edges off to sell as gold or silver
00:25:30coins to make some profit. The ridges were created so it was much easier to tell which of the coins
00:25:36had been altered. It's not needed today, but the coins still have that altered style. If you ever
00:25:42get really bored, you could try counting how many ridges there are. Actually, that is a very boring
00:25:49idea. Forget that and watch another Bright Side video instead.
00:25:56Tires on the landing gear don't burst because they're designed for a load that's four to five
00:26:02times as great as they experienced during landing. The wheel itself might break, but the tire won't
00:26:07burst. This little tip based on people's psychology can help you choose the fastest line at the airport.
00:26:14If there are several lines at check-in, opt for the left one. It's believed that you'll get to the
00:26:20counter more quickly this way. Most people are right-handed and intuitively choose the right side.
00:26:27Your skin usually becomes a bit dry during the flight. This happens because of low humidity levels
00:26:33in the cabin. Bring a good moisturizer with you to keep your skin hydrated on board.
00:26:38Do you know that airplane pilots always eat different meals before a flight?
00:26:43This way, if one of them gets food poisoning, the other will be able to take control of the plane.
00:26:50Airplane tray tables are some of the dirtiest surfaces in the cabin, so make sure to wash your
00:26:55hands frequently. And clean that table with an antibacterial wipe to get rid of all those bacteria
00:27:00living there. If you're sitting in an aisle seat, you can have more space to stretch your legs out.
00:27:06Just push the button on the underside of the outermost armrest. This will move the armrest up,
00:27:12giving you more space for your legs and preventing the armrest from jabbing into your side.
00:27:17Here's a reason why they turn the lights off in the cabin. Passengers need to get used to the
00:27:22darkness in case an emergency landing happens at night. This way, their eyes are already used to the
00:27:28absence of light, which makes it easier to evacuate. Flight attendants ask you to open window shades so they
00:27:35can see what's happening outside. This way, they can choose the best way to evacuate passengers in
00:27:41case of an emergency. Almost all passenger planes are white, since this color best reflects the sun's
00:27:48rays and prevents the plane from heating up. Another good reason is that white paint is cheaper. Also,
00:27:55workers and engineers can easily notice any damage on a white surface. It's better to avoid making
00:28:01important decisions during a flight. Your brain doesn't get enough oxygen at such heights. This
00:28:07negatively affects its functioning. Chewing gum, hard candies and mints can help you to avoid this
00:28:14annoying ear popping during takeoff and landing, but not because of the candy itself. You feel better,
00:28:20thanks to the process of swallowing. Yawning helps too. As for the gum, it also helps get rid of that
00:28:27bad
00:28:27breath caused by the thin air at high altitudes, which pulls moisture right out of your body. Dry air
00:28:34can make you feel as if you're coming down with a cold. The air in the cabin dries out your
00:28:39nose and
00:28:39throat as if you have symptoms of a cold. These symptoms usually go away right after landing. The water
00:28:47they use to make coffee and tea on board isn't always clean enough. Yeah, many companies use very
00:28:53good water filters now. But still, it's better to ask for bottled water if you're thirsty.
00:28:59That tiny triangle on the aircraft wall over your seat means a lot for flight attendants.
00:29:05These triangles mark the windows through which you can see flashing indicators. Those signal the
00:29:10retraction of the landing gears and the closing of the flaps. Let's say the pilots find out there's
00:29:16some problem. In that case, a flight attendant rushes to the necessary window to check what's
00:29:21happening. But for passengers, this is just the best place for photos since you can see the wings
00:29:26perfectly. Seats in the middle of the cabin above the wings are the best for you if you have motion
00:29:32sickness. This area is more balanced and shakes the least during turbulence. If you tend to get nervous
00:29:38during the flight, do some physical exercise not long before boarding the plane. A little workout helps
00:29:44lower your stress levels and makes your body release endorphins, the happiness hormones. Also, this
00:29:50physical activity compensates for the hours you spend sitting still. The turbines are located under
00:29:56the wings since this makes it cheaper, faster and easier to service the engines. Previously, they used to
00:30:03be placed in the tail. It required expensive equipment and much more time to repair. When they started
00:30:09installing the engines below the wings, ticket prices went down. Imagine you're flying in a hot air balloon.
00:30:15See the burner system installed under the gas bag, also called the envelope? It heats the air inside,
00:30:22which makes the balloon go up. So, turbulence is the same hot air but created by nature. When the air
00:30:28heats up,
00:30:29it rises a plane. When it becomes cooler, the aircraft goes down. And passengers feel as if they're riding a
00:30:36roller coaster. A stream of hot air left by another plane can also cause turbulence. It's common for
00:30:42most flights, but usually, turbulence is so light that passengers don't feel it. Do you know that planes
00:30:48can fly even after one engine fails? Pilots can control such emergency situations and land the aircraft
00:30:54safely. Passengers may feel a slight tilt during the flight but in most cases, they don't even know the
00:30:59plane is flying with only one engine. Your eyes get oxygen straight from the air. It's not delivered by
00:31:06the blood, so your eyes can feel somewhat dry during the flight. Put eye drops in your bag. They'll help
00:31:11you keep your eyes moist. It's forbidden to carry large volumes of liquids on board because some
00:31:17hazardous substances can easily dissolve in water. If a plane has to land on water, its wings become a
00:31:24life-saving pillow. Empty fuel tanks help the aircraft stay afloat too. By the way, it can be from 10
00:31:30minutes to 60 hours before the plane sinks. It all depends on the model, weather conditions, and the
00:31:36pilot's skills. Those smiling flight attendants you meet when you get into the cabin usually hide
00:31:41their hands behind their backs. They're counting people entering the plane to make sure that all
00:31:46passengers are on board. Despite all the words people say about airplane food, it's not actually
00:31:51so bad. The problem is your sense of taste. It's not so acute since the air in the cabin makes
00:31:57your
00:31:57mouth dry. It also dulls your sense of smell. That's why airlines add a lot of spices and salt to
00:32:03their
00:32:03meals. Is it true that your hair grows faster during the flight? Not really. Scientists haven't
00:32:10managed to prove it. This myth appeared in the first part of the 20th century when some passengers
00:32:15noticed that their stubble had grown longer during the flight. It's normal for people to get headaches
00:32:20during the flight, especially right after takeoff. You climb to an altitude higher than Mount Everest
00:32:26within about 10 minutes. These changes happen too fast for your body to adjust. Seat belts on planes
00:32:32stretch across your stomach to save you from getting slammed against the ceiling in case of
00:32:37turbulence. When it happens, the aircraft starts moving up and down and your waist belt holds you
00:32:43securely. And seat belts in cars protect people from horizontal collisions. Airplanes have special
00:32:50protection from lightning. Even if it strikes, passengers won't feel it. Planes are covered with an
00:32:55aluminum coating that conducts electric current but doesn't let it get inside the plane. Electronics and
00:33:01fuel tanks also have extra protection. Plane seats are so uncomfortable because airlines try to fit the
00:33:08maximum number of passengers on the plane. That's why there's so little space between seats. Two
00:33:14additional rows means 12 more passengers. Also, companies make airplane seats lighter to save on fuel
00:33:21costs. Even seemingly insignificant extra weight can cost an airline thousands of dollars. And by the way,
00:33:28your seat has a fire-resistant coating. It's necessary to prevent a fire from spreading in case of an
00:33:34accident. Airport workers transport unclaimed luggage to special centers. If the owner doesn't show up
00:33:41within three months, the baggage is put up for sale in specialized stores. You couldn't use your phone on
00:33:47an airplane in the past since cell phones were really dangerous for navigation. Their radio signals could
00:33:53disrupt the settings in aircraft electronics. Oxygen masks fall down not only during strong turbulence,
00:33:59but also when the air pressure inside the cabin changes dramatically. Passengers are okay if they
00:34:05put on their oxygen masks, but in such cases are considered to be an emergency. And pilots do their
00:34:11best to quickly go down to a safe altitude so that passengers can breathe without oxygen masks.
00:34:20Whether it's something as simple as a button on your jeans or something that's part of a larger
00:34:25moving mechanism, here are 26 secrets to everyday things you probably didn't know about.
00:34:32You use doorknobs every day, so it's right to be concerned about how many germs could be on them.
00:34:38However, they have made doorknobs out of brass partly for that reason. Brass provides an antimicrobial
00:34:45effect, eliminating the microorganisms that were hoping to start a colony on your doorknob.
00:34:51Your pants have that one-fifth pocket that's recognized as the small useless one. Originally,
00:34:57it was there to provide a safe place for your pocket watch, something that was necessary when
00:35:02first implemented in 1901. It then continued to remain for traditional purposes. However, it's still
00:35:08a great place to put your Tic Tacs. You've probably mistaken those little rivets on your jeans
00:35:14as some form of fashion statement, similar to the small pocket. In fact, they're incredibly important.
00:35:20They are there to provide extra support for areas that withstand the most strenuous parts of your
00:35:26clothing, preventing them from embarrassingly falling apart. That little button at the end of your seat
00:35:33belt seems like it's way out of place. In fact, it's there to ensure your buckle will always remain at
00:35:38the end, so you won't have to awkwardly fiddle with your seat belt every time you put it on.
00:35:44You're in a new car or a rental, and the gauge tells you the gas is getting low. You don't
00:35:50know
00:35:50which side the fuel cap is on from the inside. It can cause unnecessary effort at the gas station.
00:35:55However, your fuel gauge has an arrow that reminds you which side to fill your gas tank up from.
00:36:02Some models of cars may also have a gas tank hose instead, with the hose pictured on the side that
00:36:08the cap is on. Hiking and walking through snow requires the best kind of footwear. The shoes which
00:36:16are perfect for this also have an extra eyelet for your lace to loop through. Looping your laces through
00:36:22the extra eyelets will give more support for your ankles and feet, and will provide more stability as you
00:36:28walk. But as you walk, blisters are also a concern. The sweat in your shoe creates friction between the
00:36:36feet and the shoe, which then helps create the blisters. Antiperspirant that you use for your
00:36:41armpits will help keep the feet from sweating. Just make sure you use the clear one. Cooking for people
00:36:48is always nice. However, sometimes the guests are late. Yep, we're all guilty of that sometimes, right?
00:36:56The extra drawer under your oven, where you've been keeping all of your spare pots and pans,
00:37:02was actually made to keep your food warm. Great for those who are late to the meal.
00:37:07Ever wondered how long that padlock could possibly last when it's outside,
00:37:11in the rainy weather, keeping your bike safe? It has a little hole at the bottom of it. It's there
00:37:18to
00:37:18drain water to avoid corrosion on the inside. It also serves to provide oil, further prolonging its use.
00:37:26That hole in the elevator door isn't there to check who's inside so you can avoid sharing a ride
00:37:32with specific people. It's a keyhole, in case it breaks down.
00:37:37Ketchup, sauce bottles, and all other condiments we love all have a stage when it's difficult to get
00:37:42the insides out. You try hitting it, shaking it, and poking things inside to encourage the tasty
00:37:49condiments to come out. Luckily, there is an easier way to do it. The label at the top suggests where
00:37:56to tap the bottle. The sauce will come out easier and smoother, allowing gravity to take the place
00:38:03of frustration. The purpose of wooden coat hangers is to help repel pesky insects and avoid fungal growth
00:38:11that eats away at your clothing. As it's made of cedar wood, it contains oils that have insecticidal
00:38:17and fungicidal properties and were used as far back as the ancient Egyptians, although they used it for
00:38:24other purposes. We've all been trained and tested at the art of typing and know the correct way to use
00:38:32a keyboard. But you may not have noticed that the F and J keys have a small ridge at the
00:38:38bottom.
00:38:38They're there to help you find your correct starting place with your fingers on the keyboard,
00:38:43without having to look down. If you've been lucky enough to get the window seat on the plane,
00:38:49you would have noticed that little hole at the bottom of the window. It helps with the air pressure
00:38:54on the plane. The window itself is made from acrylic and isn't actually glass, which saves it from fogging
00:39:01up so you can see the scenery on your journey. The windows on planes were originally square,
00:39:07however, they would continuously break from the constant changes in pressure. Round windows are
00:39:13able to evenly distribute the pressure, ensuring you'll have a pleasant journey without falling out.
00:39:18For all you Nintendo Switch players, those who have tried to taste your cartridges will notice they
00:39:24have a bitter taste. The manufacturers added it intentionally, as the Switch's cartridge size
00:39:30is very small and it might be a hazard for the youngest players that have a tendency to put things
00:39:36in their
00:39:36mouth that they shouldn't. So the bitter taste made from Denetonium Benzoate ensures that they won't be
00:39:42tasted for too long. Cosmetics containers that are filled with products used for your skin have a secret
00:39:49number on them. This is to help inform you how long the product will be usable, ensuring it doesn't cause
00:39:57the
00:39:57reverse effect by damaging your skin instead. Pen lids have a hole at the end of them. It's not there
00:40:04to
00:40:04help your pen breathe and boost performance, but it's there to help you breathe. Just in case while you're
00:40:10sitting in class or at work and you're chewing on your lid and just happen to swallow it, you can
00:40:16be rest assured
00:40:17if it's stuck, the pen makers were thinking of you. When you're traveling by car or any other form of
00:40:24ground
00:40:24transportation and you're trying to drink your favorite pop from a straw, you'll find it quite
00:40:29difficult to do at times. Simply turn the tab on the can around so that your straw easily fits inside,
00:40:35making it easier to drink out of. There are always spare buttons when buying new clothes along with a
00:40:43little bit of fabric. It's far too small to repair that crutch part that always rips first. The fabric is
00:40:49actually there for you to test how to wash it, so you don't accidentally ruin your brand new clothes.
00:40:56Determining how much pasta you need just for yourself can be difficult to figure out.
00:41:00Your big spaghetti spoon with the big hole on the inside, that looks like it's there to drain water,
00:41:06is actually there so you can put the uncooked pasta inside before cooking, so you know exactly how much
00:41:13you need. New shoes always come with those strange little packets, that silica gel. The gels are there
00:41:20to reduce the moisture in the air to avoid any fungal growth while the shoes were waiting to be purchased.
00:41:26There's a lot of chemistry involved to get you that silica, and it's very effective, capable of absorbing
00:41:3250% of the humidity. So make sure you don't throw it away. Next time you need to dry out
00:41:38your electrical
00:41:39devices, it's a lot easier than using rice. It's difficult enough to see at night whilst driving,
00:41:46but it's even worse when the driver behind you shines their high beams. Your rear view mirror
00:41:51has a tab at the bottom. When you press it, it changes the angle. One is for day driving, the
00:41:57other,
00:41:58well, for night time. It'll help in case that one person driving behind you has forgotten to turn off
00:42:03their high beams. Although your screwdriver is ergonomically made for your hand, sometimes you
00:42:09have that one screw that's too hard to loosen up. The handle is also shaped so you can easily fit
00:42:16inside of a ring spanner or wrench, allowing you to apply more force, ensuring that you can remove that
00:42:22troublesome screw. The skirt part on an escalator seems like a good spot to get your foot stuck,
00:42:27but in reality, those long brushes poking out aren't there to give you an extra shine on your shoes,
00:42:33but for safety precautions to minimize the risk of trapping objects between the steps and the side of
00:42:39the escalator. Pouring milk into your tea or coffee can make a mess if you don't do it the right
00:42:47way.
00:42:51If you want to pour it with the opening closer to the cup, stop right there, turn it to the
00:42:56other side,
00:42:57and then pour. The flow will be much smoother this way, and you won't have to deal with wiping the
00:43:02table afterwards. Hey, I'm bossy, get over it. It's all about the physics of it. If you turn the
00:43:08carton's opening toward the cup and the carton is full, while the milk's escaping through the opening,
00:43:14the air from the outside will try to get inside the carton to fill the empty space. Since there's only
00:43:20one place where it can do that, the air will push the milk back and disrupt the flow. When you
00:43:26turn
00:43:26the carton to the other side, there will be empty space along with the top side of the carton,
00:43:31and the air will have it easier getting inside. So, the flow will be steady, and you won't have
00:43:37that annoying spurting anymore. Now, the handrails are usually moving faster than the escalator itself,
00:43:44because the gear wheels that drive the handrails are intentionally made a bit larger than required.
00:43:50The rubber on those wheels tends to wear off with time, so if the handrails are moving at the same
00:43:55speed as the steps, or even slower, then you're riding a rather old escalator. Now, speaking of
00:44:02escalators, and I was, at subway stations with three or more of them, the majority will be going in a
00:44:08different direction depending on the time of day. For example, in the city center, there will be two or more
00:44:14escalators going up in the morning and down in the evening, and vice versa at the outskirts. This is done
00:44:20to make it easier for passengers to get around. Most people only work downtown while living far from the
00:44:26center, so they go to work in the morning and find more escalators moving in the direction they need. How
00:44:33convenient! If you were ever worried about how the pilots find their way in the dark when landing at night,
00:44:40well, you can rest easy now. There's an incredibly complex illumination system on the ground that helps
00:44:46the crew navigate the airplane. And it's not just the red and white lights along the runway.
00:44:51The lights actually start popping up long before the runway, so that the pilots can easily find their
00:44:57way. And different patterns mean different things, which your captain and their co-pilot know by heart.
00:45:03Every commercial airplane you've been on has only one wing. The first airplanes were called biplanes,
00:45:09because they had two wings, one on the top and the other going through the bottom of the fuselage.
00:45:14They were connected with struts and wires, which made kind of a box that basically allowed the craft
00:45:20not to fall apart in the air. How thoughtful! It was necessary at lower speeds than earlier planes
00:45:27could only muster, but as the engines increased in power, the second wing became redundant and
00:45:33repetitive. The single wing still serves as a support for the whole structure, though.
00:45:39Going 100 miles an hour on an interstate makes you feel the drive and excitement of speed.
00:45:45Flying at nearly 600 miles per hour makes you drowsy at best. This is because you don't feel the actual
00:45:52speed of anything. You can only see how fast you're moving relative to other objects. The closer,
00:45:58the faster. In a car, everything's close to you. So you see trees, people, houses, witches,
00:46:04porcupines, and other cars zapping past you. On board a plane, everything's so far away that it
00:46:10seems to go at a snail's pace. Now take a good look at your smartphone. It might never have occurred
00:46:17to
00:46:17you, but its rectangular shape is no accident. And it's actually what you want it to be. Rectangle is
00:46:24the most convenient shape for a screen. It has an orientation, so you can flip your phone all you
00:46:30want and it will adapt. Imagine that with, say, a round-shaped display, you'd have to always turn
00:46:37it in your hands until the top is where it belongs. Next, it fits into your pocket nice and cozy.
00:46:44The
00:46:44pocket is deeper than it is wide, so a phone longer than it is broad will sit there perfectly. A
00:46:51square or
00:46:51circular phone will be more of an inconvenience. Then again, a rectangle is much easier to handle.
00:46:57It fits in your palm, and it feels better than a circle or a square. And finally, we're used to
00:47:04having rectangular things all around us. Pictures, sheets of paper, books, SpongeBob, photographs.
00:47:11Having round-shaped screens would have been just weird. Still, there have been attempts to create
00:47:17circular and square smartphones, but as you can guess, they didn't catch on. Taking photos in the
00:47:24dark with a flash, you must have noticed your smartphone flashes several times before making
00:47:29the actual shot. Remember those horrid red eyes in old photographs made on film or digital cameras?
00:47:36That happened exactly because the camera flashed only once. In the dark, the pupils of your eyes become
00:47:43larger, trying to catch more light to see better. And when they reflect the camera's flash,
00:47:49the red-eye effect appears. With smartphones, the first short flash makes the pupils contract from
00:47:55bright light, and only then the device takes a shot, and you don't resemble a horror movie creature anymore.
00:48:03There are two main reasons why there are no public bathrooms in the subway – safety and financing.
00:48:09They're ridiculously expensive to maintain, so I guess we won't be seeing many of such cabins where
00:48:16they weren't before. And the second reason is security concern, since there can be no cameras
00:48:22installed in the bathroom, and any kind of suspicious activity would go unnoticed.
00:48:27It seems only natural that a vehicle that carries so much more people than a car should have seatbelts.
00:48:33But buses have none – even school ones. In fact, it has to do with several things at once.
00:48:40First of all, in case of emergency, passengers need to get off a bus as fast as possible.
00:48:46With seatbelts on, they'll waste precious time on unbuckling them.
00:48:50Secondly, a bus is a big and heavy vehicle. On the road, there are not many other members
00:48:56of the traffic that weigh more than a public bus. So, in case of a collision, a bus would stop
00:49:02much
00:49:02slower than a car. And even though its passengers will certainly feel the impact,
00:49:07they normally won't get hurt as much. That's also the reason why passengers are allowed to ride
00:49:12standing, too. If your hotel has card keys with magnetic strips, make sure you put your card key
00:49:20apart from your cell phone and wallet. The problem is that card keys are rewritten quite a lot,
00:49:25and they're designed for that process to be quick and easy. So, a fairly strong magnet,
00:49:31like the one in your cell phone, can erase your key card, and you won't be able to get back
00:49:36inside
00:49:36your room. The hotel will surely provide you with a new card, but that's still inconvenient.
00:49:43If you're struggling to get your taco shells to stay in place, use a muffin tray. Flip the tray upside
00:49:49down,
00:49:50spray it with oil, and place your tortillas in the gap. Cook them for around 10 minutes at 700 degrees
00:49:56for the perfect crispy taco shell. Now I'm getting hungry. You? Looking for a lost earring or pin on
00:50:04the floor? Place a stocking over the end of your vacuum and move it over the floor. The small object
00:50:10will get picked up without getting vacuumed. It helps to turn the vacuum on while attempting this.
00:50:17Candle wax that's been spilled on furniture can be removed with ice cubes. Rather than ruining
00:50:23the finish by trying to scrape it off, fill the plastic bag with ice and let it sit on the
00:50:28wax for
00:50:29a few minutes. The wax will then cool and harden, making it much easier to pick off. Crayon marks on
00:50:36the walls are a parent's worst nightmare, but you can use a hair dryer to get them off. Heat the
00:50:41marks for
00:50:42just a few seconds to soften the wax and then you should be able to just wipe it away. You
00:50:48can use
00:50:49hair conditioner to make that new wool sweater less itchy. Just soak it in lukewarm water with a couple
00:50:55of tablespoons of conditioner and leave it for 15 minutes. Then just dry it and your sweater will be
00:51:01much softer. That layer of bubbles that forms when you add bubble bath to your tub isn't just for fun.
00:51:07The bubbly layer also acts as insulation and keeps your bath warmer for longer.
00:51:14Next time you're getting ready for work, take a closer look at your go-to shirt.
00:51:19Every buttonhole is stitched vertically, but check out the very last hole. It's stitched horizontally,
00:51:25right? This is because the bottom part of your shirt endures the most stress from pulling as it's where
00:51:32your hips are. So that horizontal buttonhole isn't a mistake. It's put there to stop your shirt
00:51:38ripping as your hips move. Hey, those hips don't lie. That random diamond on your backpack is called
00:51:45a lash tab or pig snap. It's there so you can thread cords through the holes to carry extra gear,
00:51:52perfect for camping or long hikes. If you put your Chinese takeout on a plate when it arrives,
00:51:58you're doing more work than you should. Much like the paper condiment pots in fast food restaurants,
00:52:04your cardboard Chinese takeout box can be unfolded to create the perfect size plate for your food.
00:52:11That hole in your hollow lollipop stick isn't to prevent choking should it ever be swallowed.
00:52:16It's actually there to keep the candy in place. Excess candy flows into the hollow tube and the hole,
00:52:22which, when it hardens, keeps the pop in place. If it was a smooth stick, the candy would slide off
00:52:29easily. Some skyscrapers have hollow floors that contain nothing but an elevator and some complex
00:52:35machinery. They're called technical floors, and developers say they're there to maintain the
00:52:40building's proper functioning. But it's also a way to get around height limits. Some skyscrapers are
00:52:47given a limit to the number of floors they can have. Because the technical floors are non-residential,
00:52:52they add to the height of the building and make it look more impressive without increasing the
00:52:57number of floors and breaking the building contract. These floors can also help to prevent the spread of
00:53:03fires. If you look closely at an elevator door, you'll notice a tiny hole. This is actually a keyhole
00:53:10used for emergencies or for routine maintenance checks. If you get stuck in an elevator, the technician
00:53:17will be able to get you out of there by using their master key. Salt isn't just used for cooking.
00:53:23It can get rid of tough smells! Like this! Phew! Rubbing salt on your fingertips after chopping garlic
00:53:30should remove the smell. It also works on shoes. Toasters have a secret slide in the bottom that can be
00:53:37removed, so you can clean out all those annoying breadcrumbs. Now, take a look at your laptop keyboard.
00:53:43There are bumps on the F and J keys, but nowhere else. When your fingers are in the optimal typing
00:53:50position, your index finger should rest on these two keys. The bumps have been added so that you can
00:53:55correctly position your hands for typing without looking at your keyboard. Washing your clothes on a
00:54:01low heat or even better, a cold wash, will make them last twice as long. Drying them on a line,
00:54:07if possible,
00:54:08will also make the material last longer than if you used a dryer. The less you wash them, the less
00:54:14they'll fade and shrink over time. It'll also save you on your energy bills. Blank pages in the books
00:54:21aren't actually made for the author's signature. It's all about the manufacturing process. Books are
00:54:27printed on large sheets, so one sheet can fit four printed pages. If a book has an odd quantity of
00:54:33printed pages, chances are you'll get a blank one for notes. Tree cart loops have more functions than
00:54:40you think. You don't want to put your fancy white jacket in a cart next to carrots and coke. This
00:54:46little hook-like thingy helps organize all the stuff in your cart better, so you can enjoy your shopping
00:54:52trip. Works for me. A good doorknob is one made of brass, bronze, or some copper alloys. These
00:55:00metals have an anti-germ effect. Bacteria spread way slower on them. They also get rid of germs pretty
00:55:07fast, within a couple of hours. There's only one way you can store your peanut butter right. If you
00:55:13place it the regular way, it may get a bit solid before long. The trick is to store it upside
00:55:19down,
00:55:20so the oils don't stay on the bottom all the time and distribute evenly. Hmm, my dog loves peanut
00:55:27butter. How about yours? Whatever coffee shop you go to, all the disposable cups look exactly the
00:55:34same, only the logo changes. The secret here is the special shape that lets you enjoy your drink easily.
00:55:41The top is always wider, which allows it to accommodate your nose while you're drinking,
00:55:46and the bottom is always narrower, so that anyone can hold it easier, even if the hand is quite small.
00:55:53This width difference also allows the cups to stack.
00:55:57Spoiled milk emits gases, like most foods when they go bad, or me. A classic plastic milk jug has a
00:56:05concave shape on one side, so when the gases expand inside the jug, it expands too, and the concave shape
00:56:13curves out.
00:56:14Also, if you want to save some milk for later and freeze it, the jug will expand when the milk
00:56:20gets
00:56:20solid as well, occupying more space in a jug. Almost all measuring tapes have a metal tip with a small
00:56:27slot on the end. You can use this slot to hang the tape on a nail or a screw to
00:56:32make measurements without
00:56:34anyone's help. Sometimes this tip has a row of sharp points along the edge on one side. It comes in
00:56:40handy
00:56:41when you want to leave a mark without using a pencil. If you've ever tried a Nintendo cartridge to taste,
00:56:47you'll confirm that they taste revolting, leaving a sour, bitterish aftertaste in your mouth.
00:56:53Well, we tried to tell you. They're covered with denotonium benzoid, one of the most disgusting flavors
00:57:00now. Not normally seen in ice cream stores either. Actually, this taste has a righteous function.
00:57:06It prevents people from swallowing those cartridges.
00:57:10Rough edges on the dives are just about design. The coins used to be made of precious metals to show
00:57:16their real value. People would shave off the edges, spending the shaving coins with the same value,
00:57:22and melt the edges to new coins. To avoid it, Minters added that pattern so people could tell
00:57:28if someone cut that coin before. A triple handle on a jerry can is there to make it easier for
00:57:35two
00:57:35people to carry it and distribute the fuel evenly. Lemons get juicier if you warm them up a little bit
00:57:42in
00:57:42the microwave. The heat softens the frozen membranes, so the juice can flow out freely.
00:57:48The result? More lemonade for you! The expiration date on mineral water isn't about water going bad.
00:57:56Actually, no water can spoil, but the bottle can. Over time, it starts leaking some chemicals that
00:58:03aren't quite safe. Okay, here's a science project to try. Tonic water can be fluorescent in UV black light.
00:58:11It contains quinine, which makes it both bitter and glowing. The color of plates and cups can affect
00:58:18your food perception. A group of 57 volunteers drank hot chocolate out of different cups,
00:58:25but most people claim the orange cup hot chocolate was the best. Red color plates are cool for those on
00:58:31a diet. It looks alarming, so you end up eating less. Okay, I'm gonna go do the tonic water black
00:58:38light thing. Bye!
00:58:42Next time you're getting ready for work, take a closer look at your go-to shirt. Every buttonhole is
00:58:48stitched vertically, but check out the very last hole. It's stitched horizontally, right? This is because the
00:58:54bottom part of your shirt endures the most stress from pulling, as it's where your hips are. So that horizontal
00:59:00buttonhole isn't a mistake. It's put there to stop your shirt ripping as your hips move. That layer of bubbles
00:59:07that
00:59:07forms when you add bubble bath to your tub isn't just for fun. The bubbly layer also acts as insulation
00:59:13and keeps your bath warmer for longer. The pom-pom on top of your beanie wasn't put there as a
00:59:19fashion
00:59:19accessory. The pom-pom was originally added to the hat to prevent sailors banging their heads on the
00:59:25ceilings of the ships that were too low. Crackers have holes in them to stop them cracking and breaking
00:59:31during baking. If the holes weren't there, steam would build up inside the cracker and make it
00:59:37collapse. Those numbers on stickers they put on oranges aren't random. If there are four digits,
00:59:43and the first is three or four, this means the fruit has been made with conventional farming techniques.
00:59:49Five numbers, beginning with an eight, means the fruit has been genetically modified.
00:59:54Five numbers, beginning with a nine, means the fruit is organic.
00:59:59Margins on paper aren't for writing in dates and numbering lists. They were originally added to serve
01:00:04a protective function. Back in the day, rats used to be a pesky problem in people's homes,
01:00:09and paper was one of their favorite snacks. Margins were added as a safeguard,
01:00:14so that the rats would nibble on blank paper rather than taking a bite out of your important work.
01:00:20If you put your Chinese takeout on a plate when it arrives, you're doing more work than you should.
01:00:25Much like the paper condiment pots in fast food restaurants, your cardboard Chinese takeout box can
01:00:32be unfolded to create the perfect size plate for your food. The long neck on your soda bottle is
01:00:38designed like that to encourage you to hold it there. That way, the heat from your hand will only warm
01:00:43that top bit of the bottle instead of heating up your whole drink.
01:00:48Why does a lapel have a buttonhole with no matching button? Originally, coats and jackets did have a
01:00:55corresponding button so that the wearer could turn up the collar and fasten it around the neck to keep
01:01:00warm. Over time, people stopped doing this, and the button was removed. But many suit makers still
01:01:05keep the non-functioning traditional buttonhole. It's always hard to see your food in the microwave
01:01:11because of that pesky black grate on the window. But it's there to stop harmful microwaves escaping.
01:01:17Called the Faraday shield, it protects you as well as ensures that your food cooks properly.
01:01:23That random diamond on your backpack is called a lash tab or pig snout. It's there so you can thread
01:01:30cords through the holes to carry extra gear. Perfect for camping or long hikes. Golf balls are covered in
01:01:37dimples, rather than being perfectly round, so that the ball can fly through the air more smoothly,
01:01:42decreasing the drag and allowing it to travel further and faster. Your makeup pads have two
01:01:48different sides for a reason. The bumpy side is used for applying makeup, while the flat side is for
01:01:54removing it. Donuts have holes so that the inside and outside cook evenly. Before the holes were added,
01:02:01the inside would often be greasy and doughy, while the outside was crisp. Your Apple laptop charger has
01:02:08tiny legs that can be folded out, and they're not there so your charger can stand up. These legs,
01:02:14when unfolded, allow you to wrap the cable around and then clamp it into place, securing it and
01:02:19preventing the cable getting tangled or damaged. Now take a look at a soda bottle, and you'll notice a
01:02:25disc inside the bottle cap. This helps seal in the liquid and the drink's fizz, stopping it from going
01:02:32flat. That hole in your hollow lollipop stick isn't to prevent choking, should it ever be swallowed.
01:02:38It's actually there to keep the candy in place. Excess candy flows into the hollow tube and the hole,
01:02:44which, when it hardens, keeps the pop in place. If it was a smooth stick, the candy would slide off
01:02:50easily.
01:02:52The zipper on leather biker jackets is often sewn diagonally. It's not just a fashion statement.
01:02:58Zips that are stitched vertically can bunch up if the wearer leans forward, but a diagonal zipper won't.
01:03:04That little triangle on your gas gauge is there to let you know which side of the car your gas
01:03:09cap is on.
01:03:10Now you'll never pull up to the wrong side of the pump in a rental car again.
01:03:15Vacuums come with so many attachments, but do any of us really know what that one with long bristles
01:03:22is for? It's for dusting, and it's perfect for cleaning framed art, blinds, and lampshades.
01:03:28Those tiny holes in the chocolate box tray actually serve a function. Push the hole near the candy,
01:03:34and it'll pop straight out with you having to get your hands dirty. How thoughtful.
01:03:39Some skyscrapers have hollow floors that can contain nothing but an elevator.
01:03:44It's actually a way to get around height limits. Some skyscrapers are given a limit to the number
01:03:49of floors they can have. Because the hollow floors are empty, they add to the height of the building
01:03:54and make it look more impressive without increasing the number of floors and breaking the building
01:03:58contract. These hollow floors also help to prevent the spread of fires.
01:04:05Women's shirt buttons are traditionally on the left for a reason. Back in the day,
01:04:09it was a sign of wealth, as it signified that a chambermaid had dressed you,
01:04:14as having the buttons on the left made it easier for them to do up the shirt.
01:04:18Your cuticles serve a purpose, so think before you get rid of them. The small area of skin is there
01:04:24to protect your nails from infection. Without it, bacteria and fungi can get in.
01:04:31What's the difference between a wooden hanger and a plastic one? Aside from helping keep your
01:04:36clothes in shape, cedar wood hangers also repel moths and bugs. If you look closely at an elevator
01:04:43door, you'll notice a tiny hole. This is actually a keyhole used for emergencies or for routine
01:04:49maintenance checks. Those random buttons dotted across your jeans are called rivets and are placed
01:04:55in the weakest spots of the jeans to protect them from ripping due to strain or movement.
01:05:01The Statue of Liberty's crown has seven points for a reason. They represent the seven seas and
01:05:07seven continents and were added so that she could extend her freedom to everyone on earth.
01:05:13Suitcases often come with two zippers so that you can connect them with a padlock to prevent theft.
01:05:19Salt isn't just used for cooking. It can get rid of tough smells. Rubbing salt on your
01:05:24fingertips after chopping garlic should remove the smell. It also works on shoes.
01:05:29If you're in a hurry to get somewhere but your phone is low on charge,
01:05:33switch it to airplane mode while it's plugged in. It'll charge much faster.
01:05:39Men's shirts have a loop on the back so that they can be hung on a hook in a dressing
01:05:44room or a locker
01:05:44room without creasing. Vaseline has a hidden purpose. It's great for removing scuffs from patent leather
01:05:51shoes. It'll also shine them. Trunks have an emergency latch if you ever accidentally lock
01:05:57yourself in. Like I do. Don't ask me why. If you fumble around to locate it, all you have to
01:06:03do is pull on
01:06:04it and the trunk should open. Toasters have a secret slide in the bottom that can be removed so you
01:06:11can
01:06:11clean out all those annoying breadcrumbs. Take a look at your laptop keyboard. There are bumps on the F
01:06:18and J keys, but nowhere else. When your fingers are in the optimal typing position, your index finger
01:06:24should rest on these two keys. The bumps have been added so that you can correctly position your hands
01:06:29for typing without looking at your keyboard. If you happen to be missing your index fingers,
01:06:34perhaps from feeding sharks a little too closely, then you're out of luck.
