00:00:00You're thirsty, so you crack open a soda can and take a few big gulps.
00:00:05Next thing you know, you're out of commission.
00:00:07Turns out, that can was contaminated with something nasty, like rat urine, and you had no clue.
00:00:15Just goes to show, you never know what might be lurking in that seemingly innocent drink.
00:00:21During transportation, storage, or handling, cans can pick up germs, bacteria, and dirt.
00:00:26When you drink straight from the can, those germs can easily enter your body.
00:00:32Cans are often stored in warehouses and rarely get a good cleaning before they reach you.
00:00:37Warehouse conditions can be pretty gross.
00:00:40Think rats running over them and less than ideal hygiene.
00:00:45To stay safe, it's a good idea to clean cans before drinking from them.
00:00:49Experts suggest giving them a quick wash with soap and water to avoid contamination.
00:00:54Studies have shown that unwashed bottles can be full of bacteria, so this step is really important.
00:01:01Now, quick question.
00:01:03Who's taken out more people?
00:01:05Sharks or vending machines?
00:01:08Surprisingly, vending machines have a darker history.
00:01:11Let's dive in.
00:01:12But first, let's define what counts as a vending machine casualty.
00:01:16We'll rule out things like expired snacks or electric shocks.
00:01:20Those aren't the machine's fault.
00:01:22What we do count are incidents where someone was severely harmed or, what's worse, passed away from rocking or tilting
00:01:29the machine.
00:01:30For sharks, any fatal encounter counts.
00:01:35In a 1995 report, there were two severe incidents that ended up in demise and one serious injury linked to
00:01:43vending machines.
00:01:44Since 1978, there have been at least 37 such incidents and 113 injuries, which gives us about two fatalities per
00:01:54year.
00:01:55Compare that to one shark-related incident in 2021.
00:01:59However, this data is quite old.
00:02:01Since 2008, there haven't been any reported vending machine incidents.
00:02:06Why the drop?
00:02:07It could be due to warning signs and credit card readers reducing the need to shake machines.
00:02:13But remember, your risk varies based on where you live and your habits.
00:02:18In the end, the vending machine versus shark comparison isn't quite accurate anymore.
00:02:24Today, you're more likely to have a serious encounter with a shark than a vending machine.
00:02:28But the point remains.
00:02:30Sharks aren't the bloodthirsty hunters they're made out to be.
00:02:34So, someone pointed out your visible nose hairs and now you're looking for ways to deal with them.
00:02:39You might think plucking is the way to go, but hold up, it's not as safe as you think.
00:02:44Here are three solid reasons to avoid plucking your nose hair.
00:02:49Your nose is full of delicate nerves, follicles, and plenty of bacteria.
00:02:55Plucking nose hair can damage the sensitive skin inside your nostrils, letting germs in and causing issues like infections and
00:03:02inflammation.
00:03:03Also, just like with waxing, plucking nose hair can result in ingrown hairs.
00:03:08As the hair grows back, it might curl into the follicle, causing bumps, discomfort, and inflammation.
00:03:15This can lead to folliculitis, which shows up as small, pus-filled red bumps and can be itchy or painful.
00:03:22In severe cases, plucking nose hairs can cause nasal farunculosis, a deep follicle infection with swelling and discomfort.
00:03:30This infection can spread to blood vessels near the brain, potentially leading to cavernous sinus thrombosis,
00:03:37a condition where blood clots form behind the eye sockets.
00:03:40If not treated, this condition can be life-threatening and may cause permanent brain damage.
00:03:46To avoid these problems, go for trimming your nose hair instead.
00:03:50Trimming doesn't make your hair grow back thicker or faster,
00:03:53and it helps maintain the right amount of nose hair to keep out pathogens.
00:03:59Contact lenses are meant to help you see, but they can make you turn completely blind.
00:04:05One big no-no is wearing your contacts in the shower.
00:04:09It's bad for both your lenses and your eye health.
00:04:12Showering with contacts is like swimming or sleeping with them in.
00:04:15It's a common mistake.
00:04:17Water and contacts just don't mix.
00:04:20You need to keep your lenses clean to avoid any issues.
00:04:24If water gets behind your lens, germs or chemicals like chlorine can get in there and cause trouble.
00:04:30At best, you might end up with sore or itchy eyes.
00:04:33Worse, you could get conjunctivitis from a bacterial infection.
00:04:37In rare, serious cases, you might even face infections, which can sometimes lead to blindness.
00:04:44Most people wear contacts in the shower accidentally rather than doing it on purpose.
00:04:49If this happens, close your eyes right away and carefully step out of the shower to remove your lenses.
00:04:55If your eyes feel sore or look red afterward, contact your optometrist, ASAP.
00:05:01Always use the cleaning solution your optometrist recommends to sterilize your lenses before putting them back in.
00:05:07But really, it's best to take out your contacts before showering or bathing.
00:05:12If there's one piece of home decor you should keep a close eye on, it's snow globes.
00:05:16They might seem harmless, but a family in East Hampton, Massachusetts would beg to differ.
00:05:22In a crazy turn of events, a snow globe sparked a fire in their apartment while no one was home.
00:05:29Luckily, quick-thinking neighbors and a swift response from the fire department kept the blaze from spreading through the entire
00:05:35complex.
00:05:36It was a normal Thursday morning when, around 11.30 a.m., neighbors heard smoke alarms blaring in the apartment
00:05:43and dialed 911.
00:05:45Firefighters arrived to find the place locked, so they had to force their way in.
00:05:50Inside, they found a small fire on the coffee table and a room filled with smoke.
00:05:55There, they also saw the culprit.
00:05:57It was a snow globe.
00:05:59It was sitting just right on the coffee table, and the sunlight hit it at the perfect angle, magnifying onto
00:06:05some cardboard and styrofoam and setting them on fire.
00:06:08While it's not common, fires started by magnified sunlight do happen.
00:06:14Many firefighters have seen blazes ignited by mirrors and magnifying glasses.
00:06:18So, keep those snow globes out of direct sunlight.
00:06:22Better safe than sorry.
00:06:26Alright, let's talk about fatal fruit.
00:06:29No, I'm not going to bore you with another lame list of the most poisonous fruits out there.
00:06:34Instead, I'm going to tell you about something heavenly tasty that can make you teleport to the heavens in a
00:06:40matter of seconds.
00:06:42Meet the coconut.
00:06:43This seemingly innocent fruit has a dark side.
00:06:47Coconuts are responsible for around 150 fatalities each year.
00:06:52These bad boys have a whole page dedicated to the fatal incidents they've caused.
00:06:57A full-size coconut weighs about 3 pounds 3 ounces.
00:07:01And if you know a thing or two about physics, you'll understand that gravity makes them even more dangerous when
00:07:07they fall from trees.
00:07:09But it's not just falling coconuts you need to worry about.
00:07:12Consuming large amounts of coconut water can lead to sudden cardiac arrest due to hyperkalemia, thanks to its high potassium
00:07:20levels.
00:07:21And while rare, there have been cases of anaphylaxis in people with coconut allergies.
00:07:26While the most common way coconuts cause harm is by falling and hitting someone, there have been some unusual incidents
00:07:33too.
00:07:34In December 1923, a man in Newcastle, Pennsylvania passed away while trying to crack open a coconut with the butt
00:07:41end of a loaded revolver.
00:07:43It went off and he was shot in the abdomen.
00:07:46You know those handy selfie sticks that help you nail the perfect shot?
00:07:50Turns out, they can be way more dangerous than you'd expect.
00:07:54These little gadgets have led to a surprising amount of injuries and even some fatalities.
00:08:00People have accidentally knocked themselves or others out, taken a tumble off cliffs, and even been hit by cars while
00:08:07trying to get that Insta-worthy pic.
00:08:10Some popular landmarks have even banned selfie sticks altogether.
00:08:14For instance, the oceanfront in Mumbai has said no to selfie sticks.
00:08:19India, by the way, leads the world in selfie-related deaths.
00:08:22Nearly 40% of the 49 globally recorded fatalities over the past three years happened there.
00:08:29If you still think selfie accidents aren't a big deal, consider this.
00:08:33From 2008 to mid-2021, a staggering 379 people lost their lives while trying to get that perfect shot.
00:08:42So yeah, it's definitely something to take seriously.
00:08:46You check into your hotel room, connect to Wi-Fi, jump on the bed, and post 15 photos of your
00:08:52new window view.
00:08:53When the initial surge of excitement is gone, you notice a suspicious blinking light on your big TV.
00:08:59Could it be that someone is watching you?
00:09:02Or have you just seen too many spy movies?
00:09:06Well, hidden cameras come in all shapes and sizes.
00:09:09Large ones are easy to spot, but the small ones can be really sneaky and inconspicuous.
00:09:15They can be hiding behind furniture, in decorations or vents, and anywhere else you'll have trouble noticing.
00:09:21There are even special cameras that can be hidden in everyday movable objects, like alarm clocks, picture frames, vases, and
00:09:30lamps.
00:09:31Check to see if these objects are facing at a strange angle, or if they're positioned to get the best
00:09:37view of your room or bathroom.
00:09:40The easiest way to spot a hidden cam is to look for the lens reflection, because all cameras come with
00:09:46lenses.
00:09:47Turn off the lights and slowly scan the room with a flashlight, laser pointer, or a special wireless spy cam
00:09:54detector.
00:09:55It comes with infrared scanning lights and one illuminating light.
00:09:59When you find a reflective red spot, you gotta turn on the flashlight to help check if there is a
00:10:04hidden camera.
00:10:06Definitely check the vents along with any other holes and gaps in the walls or ceiling.
00:10:11Some advanced detectors even show you what the camera is seeing, making it way easier to spot and disable.
00:10:18The detectors only work on cameras that are turned on and working normally, though.
00:10:25Your mobile phone can also help you find some hidden threats.
00:10:29Turn on Bluetooth and walk around.
00:10:31See if any unknown devices pop up on the screen.
00:10:35Another idea is to install a network scanner app that shows all devices that are connected to the Wi-Fi
00:10:42network you're using at the hotel.
00:10:44When it's done scanning, study the list for devices called something like IP camera or cam.
00:10:52Plus, you can put your phone on selfie mode, turn off the light and close the curtains, and look around
00:10:58the room slowly while focusing on the screen.
00:11:01Keep an eye out for purple or white lights on the screen.
00:11:06You can play detective some more and call your friend or family member and start walking around your room.
00:11:12Secret cameras should emit a sort of radio frequency.
00:11:16It will most likely interfere with your phone call signal.
00:11:20If you start hearing any weird noises while you're on the phone in a certain area of your room, make
00:11:26sure to inspect it carefully.
00:11:29Check out the light switches, electrical outlets, lamps, and other objects you normally wouldn't pay attention to.
00:11:36If they look a bit crooked, have a hole, or seem misplaced, it could be a sign that someone tampered
00:11:43with them.
00:11:43Many spy devices need wires, and whoever installed them had to hide those wires, often behind the vinyl baseboard.
00:11:52That's why the place where the floor and the wall meet is another area you should check.
00:11:57Ridges, bumps, or discoloration could be a sign there's a microphone hiding there.
00:12:03The same goes for spots on ceilings and walls, even if they're not larger than a coin.
00:12:10If you do find a hidden camera or something looking suspicious, don't shy away and let the hotel administration or
00:12:17your booking service know about it.
00:12:19Don't try to touch or move the device yourself.
00:12:22If the hotel denies everything, contact local law enforcement.
00:12:27After you've scanned the room for cameras, check out the mirrors.
00:12:32Someone could be watching you from the other side.
00:12:35First, see if the mirror is built into the wall or can be adjusted.
00:12:40If the mirror is semi-transparent, it will be built into the wall.
00:12:44You can do a simple test to check the mirror.
00:12:47Press your fingertip against the glass and push firmly enough to leave a fingerprint as you move your finger away.
00:12:55Study the fingerprint.
00:12:56If there's a small gap between the print and the mirror where the glass should be, then it's just a
00:13:02mirror.
00:13:02On a semi-transparent mirror, there will be no gap.
00:13:07Another way to check if your mirror is semi-transparent is simply to tap the glass.
00:13:13If someone is watching you from the other side, the mirror will make an empty sound.
00:13:18A double mirror needs a brighter light on the other side than on yours.
00:13:22Get close to it and cup your hands around your eyes.
00:13:26Do you see some light behind the mirror?
00:13:28If so, you might have an unwanted audience.
00:13:33Before you leave your room or go to bed, make sure every door is securely locked.
00:13:38By every door, I mean not only the entrance to the room, but also the door leading to the terrace,
00:13:44if you have one.
00:13:45You can bring a portable door lock with you for extra security if you're staying in.
00:13:50You could also start a little DIY project and wrap a belt or a bag strap around the arm that
00:13:57pushes the door shut.
00:13:59Buckle it up and wrap it around several times for an extra layer of protection.
00:14:05Another idea for when you're about to nap or go to sleep is to build a pyramid of stuff by
00:14:10the door.
00:14:12Glasses and mugs will do perfectly.
00:14:14If someone tries to get inside while you're sleeping, there'll be some serious noise.
00:14:20Intruders prefer to keep it low-key, so they're highly likely to give up on robbing you straight away.
00:14:27If you travel with some valuables and don't feel comfortable leaving them around the room, you could put them in
00:14:32the safe inside your room.
00:14:34But because those safes use passcodes instead of physical locks, someone from the hotel has to know the master code
00:14:41to unlock it, just in case.
00:14:43So, you can bring your own safe with you instead.
00:14:46You can find the ones looking like books on Amazon, for example.
00:14:50They're made of strong metal and textured paper.
00:14:53They come with a combination lock and have enough room to fit your passports, cash, and jewelry.
00:15:00In case you have to leave your laptop in the room and want to make sure no one plugs in
00:15:05a USB drive to steal your data, here's what you can do.
00:15:08Leave a bottle of water or some other item next to the USB port.
00:15:13Measure the distance.
00:15:15Let's say it's one thumb length away.
00:15:17For someone to plug in their device in the laptop, they need to move the bottle.
00:15:22You can take it one step further and drop a pen parallel to the laptop under a certain angle.
00:15:29You can measure the angle with your smartwatch or phone using the Compass app.
00:15:34Again, if someone moves it, you'll know.
00:15:38Even something as simple as a Please Do Not Disturb sign can help you figure out if someone entered your
00:15:44room while you were away.
00:15:46Make it look like you left in a rush and the sign accidentally stuck between the door and the door
00:15:52frame.
00:15:52If you come back and the sign is hanging freely, then someone must have ignored it and tried to disturb
00:15:58you.
00:15:58In that case, you can contact reception and ask to send someone to enter the room with you to keep
00:16:05you safe.
00:16:07If you care about the cleanliness of your room as much as you do about your belongings and your personal
00:16:12safety, this one's for you.
00:16:15Hotel housekeeping workers normally have up to 20 rooms to take care of on an 8-hour shift.
00:16:22It means they'll have no more than 30 minutes for your room.
00:16:26It gives them enough time to make the bed, clean the floors in the room and the bathroom, empty the
00:16:32trash bins, and dust all surfaces.
00:16:34But they rarely have the time to take care of smaller objects like light switches, door and drawer handles, and
00:16:42remotes.
00:16:43And yes, these are exactly the objects you'll be in contact with the most.
00:16:48They can actually have more germs than the toilet.
00:16:51So, if you want to be sure those germs won't land on your hands, bring enough antibacterial wipes to clean
00:16:58all those things before you touch them.
00:17:01Well, it's that time of year again.
00:17:04Spring cleaning.
00:17:05Making your way outside, you grab the duster and broom to get rid of all those cobwebs on your windows.
00:17:11They don't stand a chance this time.
00:17:14Removing one cobweb after the other, you suddenly notice some weird-shaped mud stuck under the eaves and porch.
00:17:21What's this?
00:17:23It suddenly dawns on you.
00:17:24These have to be mud-dauber wasp nests.
00:17:27You're probably thinking there's a swarm of them around with so many nests being side-by-side.
00:17:33Luckily, mud-dauber wasps are solitary insects.
00:17:37Phew!
00:17:38All those little mud huts are filled with paralyzed spiders.
00:17:42Sometimes, even up to 500 spiders can be trapped in these lockers, just waiting for the wasp young to hatch.
00:17:49If the nest has holes, it may indicate the nest is inactive or old,
00:17:54as mud-dauber wasps create holes when they leave the nest.
00:17:59If you're not going to remove them, it's best to wait till nighttime when they're not as active.
00:18:04While they're pretty placid, if they feel threatened, they won't hesitate to stay.
00:18:11Looking like someone got halfway through building one insect and forgot what part came next,
00:18:17the mole cricket is one insect that really looks out of this world.
00:18:21With claws like a mole, a body of a cricket, and the head of a shrimp,
00:18:27this critter is like the platypus of the insect world.
00:18:30They're not venomous and will only bite if you trap them inside your hand.
00:18:35And if you really annoy it, it's got something else up its sleeve.
00:18:39The wings.
00:18:40They can spit a foul-smelling brown liquid from their body, just like a skunk.
00:18:46So, just let them leave your home and there will be nothing to clean up.
00:18:51Rock pools are teeming with all sorts of plant and animal life.
00:18:55Sea creatures such as starfish, seagrass, hermit crabs, tiny fish, and all types of octopuses.
00:19:02If you come across this tiny blue-ringed octopus, it's best to leave it alone.
00:19:08It's flashing neon blue at you for a reason.
00:19:11This miniature octopus has a venomous bite that's a thousand times stronger than cyanide,
00:19:17with no antidote available.
00:19:20Don't poke it with a stick or try to pick one up.
00:19:22It's not worth the trip to the hospital.
00:19:25Or the morgue.
00:19:28Snakes on land are scary, but sea snakes are on an entirely different level.
00:19:33Found in the Indian and Pacific Oceans, there are about 50 different species of sea snakes,
00:19:39and they're beautiful as much as they're dangerous.
00:19:42Luckily, they don't seem to worry about us too much.
00:19:45The Dubois sea snake is arguably the most venomous snake in the ocean,
00:19:50with the big sea snake not far behind.
00:19:53Their venom makes a cobra's bite seem like a walk in the park.
00:19:57The venom of both these snakes is extremely dangerous.
00:20:01Good thing for us that their venom can take hours to cause any symptoms in humans.
00:20:06If they can bite through your wetsuit, that is.
00:20:10Now, if this fly lands on your arm outside, you might just scream a little,
00:20:15hey, I wouldn't blame you.
00:20:16The scorpion fly, as its name suggests, has a curved tail that looks just like a scorpion stinger.
00:20:23But you can breathe a sigh of relief.
00:20:26This is only used for mating.
00:20:28It also has a long, beak-like head that's used to feed after stealing insects from spiders' webs.
00:20:34To find the perfect partner, they love to give the equivalent of a box of chocolates and flowers.
00:20:40Except theirs is saliva.
00:20:43Mmm, how romantic!
00:20:45If you happen to be in Africa, you might just miss this large bird if you're not paying attention.
00:20:51The shoobill will just casually stand still as you walk right on by.
00:20:57Going up to 5 feet tall with an 8-foot wingspan,
00:21:01the shoobill sounds like an apex predator, though it's anything but.
00:21:06Known as one of the most slow-moving birds, almost statue-like,
00:21:10The shoobill just eats fish near the surface of the water, without a care in the world.
00:21:16This bird isn't afraid of humans at all.
00:21:18While they won't naturally come over to talk about the weather,
00:21:22they'll allow us to get close enough for some photos.
00:21:26Now, if you hear a small, squeaking sound while you're in the garden,
00:21:30it could be a mouse, a squirrel, or a rhinoceros beetle is letting you know that you are too close.
00:21:38They love to make a racket when bothered.
00:21:41With a giant scary horn on top of their head,
00:21:44they might seem like they're able to defend themselves with it.
00:21:47But that's not possible at all.
00:21:49That's only to move leaves and sticks out of their way,
00:21:52and to stop other males from coming into the female beetle's area.
00:21:57Not only have they got a horn on their head,
00:22:00but they've also got Herculean strength,
00:22:03able to lift 850 times their own weight.
00:22:06It's like you or me lifting 65 tons or 11 elephants.
00:22:11Hey, let's try it.
00:22:12Nah.
00:22:14Found mainly in China,
00:22:16the small, tufted deer looks adorable with its tuft of hair.
00:22:20That is, until it turns around.
00:22:22Oh no, it's a vampire deer!
00:22:26Luckily, this animal doesn't want to taste your blood or wear a cape.
00:22:30Only males grow these during the mating season,
00:22:33rather than antlers to fight over territories and female-tufted deer.
00:22:38These fangs are more like elephant tusks than sharp teeth.
00:22:41Not only do they have fangs,
00:22:44but they're also known to bark like a dog and flee like a cat when they're scared.
00:22:50Red sky at night, sailor's delight.
00:22:53Red sky in the morning, sailor's warning.
00:22:57No one said anything about a red tide, though.
00:23:00The red tide is a toxic algal bloom
00:23:03that rises up from the seafloor after particularly bad storms.
00:23:07This algae looks a lot like spilled ketchup or rust in the water.
00:23:12But it's much worse for the life around it.
00:23:14Fish and marine life will try to escape once exposed to the toxic algae in their water.
00:23:20It's not particularly harmful to humans who are exposed to it.
00:23:23But if you eat seafood contaminated with its toxins,
00:23:28things can become a bit more serious.
00:23:30So, if the sea is red, just stay out of the water.
00:23:35Some spiders love to show off with bright colors to show they're dangerous.
00:23:41Not the Sydney funnel-web spider of Australia.
00:23:44This glossy black spider doesn't eat theatrics to prove it's tough.
00:23:49These bad-tempered crawlers cause serious alarm when they decide to bite us.
00:23:54They can shut down our entire nervous system in as little as 30 minutes.
00:23:59Making their web in any shelter, like old logs, shoes, or even garden gnomes,
00:24:05the funnel-web spiders like to live close to our surroundings for easy food.
00:24:11When they get tired of an area,
00:24:13they just leave their web behind and wander off to find somewhere new.
00:24:17Perfect!
00:24:19Some say honey badgers don't care, and I think they might be right.
00:24:24When you're brave enough to take food away from a jaguar, lion, or hyena,
00:24:29hey, what do you got to fear?
00:24:31These tough relatives of the weasel aren't just ferocious, they're super smart.
00:24:36Known to even use tools to escape from enclosures.
00:24:40Objects like rakes, stones, and mud just become things to climb for freedom.
00:24:45Aside from their physical similarities to the skunk,
00:24:49the honey badger also boasts a dangerous gland in its tail containing a powerful stink machine.
00:24:55So, they're tough, stinky, have extremely stretchy and strong skin,
00:25:00and to top it all off, they've got a strong immunity to scorpions and snakes.
00:25:05The best thing to do if you walk into a honey badger is to leave it alone.
00:25:11What chance do we have?
00:25:14Ever heard of the fungus strawberries and cream?
00:25:17No?
00:25:18What about its other name?
00:25:19The bleeding tooth fungus?
00:25:21This fungus isn't toxic, but tastes so bitter that you might think twice about trying some.
00:25:28When young and growing, this white mushroom appears to have red jelly coming out of its pores.
00:25:34This sticky liquid is sap that's pushed up from taking on too much water.
00:25:39The adult mushroom is just a boring beige compared to this.
00:25:43Underneath the mushroom cap, where its spores are produced, it has a tooth-like structure, just to make it even
00:25:50weirder.
00:25:52Tasmanian devils have a reputation for being bad-tempered when threatened by a predator,
00:25:58fighting other males, or getting a place at the table for dinner.
00:26:01They're dubbed devils because of the teeth-bearing, lunging, and one of the scariest shrieks you'll ever hear in the
00:26:08middle of the night.
00:26:09They'll also eat pretty much anything they can get a hold of, too.
00:26:13They don't habitually go for people, although they will defend themselves if they're cornered.
00:26:19With such a powerful bite, you wouldn't want to be on the receiving end.
00:26:23Good thing the tassie devils would much rather escape as well.
00:26:31Burglaries are on the rise in your neighborhood, and you have concerns about whether your house might be vulnerable.
00:26:38You have no surveillance system, so tonight, you're placing some foil over the front door handle before you go to
00:26:45bed.
00:26:47This will help identify if someone sneakily tries to enter while you sleep.
00:26:53You wake up the next morning, and it appears the foil is slightly ripped.
00:26:57Someone has been here, and they're sure to return.
00:27:02Another option is to put a mug on the doorknob.
00:27:05When the knob turns, the mug will fall, causing a noise to wake you up and hopefully deter the intruder.
00:27:13Your main concern is that a tradesman stopped by recently.
00:27:17He said that he was working next door and asked to use your toilet.
00:27:23You refused, and felt bad at the time for being rude.
00:27:27But it was a very smart move.
00:27:29About 60% of burglaries in the USA are made by someone you know or have met before.
00:27:37That tradesman, while going to the bathroom, could have adjusted something in your house to make their return entry a
00:27:43little easier.
00:27:44They may have wanted to take a closer look at what security system is installed,
00:27:48check the structural integrity of your home, and found out what valuable loot you might have.
00:27:55Finally, today you're going on vacation.
00:27:58You need to prepare your house and make it as safe as possible.
00:28:03A full post box is the first thing a robber will look for in a target.
00:28:07Your neighbor will need to take your mail while you're away.
00:28:11A well-manicured property is a clear sign that you are always there.
00:28:16You've always kept your lawn mown and hedges trimmed,
00:28:19so you will need to arrange for someone to do this while you're away.
00:28:24If it was winter, any untouched snow around your house would also make it a target.
00:28:29Having a neighbor make pretend footprints that show recent activity will also provide a deterrent.
00:28:36There are many types of hedges that act as a great first defense.
00:28:41Luckily, you have sharp-leaved shrubs along your fences.
00:28:45If someone jumps into your property and lands on a sharp or spiky bush,
00:28:50they will immediately cry out in discomfort.
00:28:53This will alert your neighbors of an intruder.
00:28:57And the foliage will also catch fragments of clothing that could be used as evidence later.
00:29:04In preparation for your trip the week before,
00:29:07you opened and closed your curtains at random times throughout the day.
00:29:12You made sure there were no clear patterns,
00:29:15so it won't matter if they're left open while you're away,
00:29:18just in case someone was scouting your property.
00:29:22Burglars spend several days walking or driving through neighborhoods,
00:29:26identifying the behaviors of each house.
00:29:30One thing they don't really like is a neighborhood watch.
00:29:33Criminals do their research before they start scouting,
00:29:36and will avoid these areas.
00:29:38Something for you to organize when you get back.
00:29:43Now, move all your expensive electronics away from the windows,
00:29:47so there's nothing of value in clear view.
00:29:50Put them inside a cupboard or a concealed room.
00:29:54Don't worry about TVs.
00:29:56They're too large and take effort to move.
00:29:58The criminals are more interested in the smaller devices,
00:30:01like an iPad and gaming devices.
00:30:05Put your small expensive items, like jewelry, in boxes,
00:30:09and hide them away in a secret location.
00:30:12Surprisingly, a kid's room is a good spot.
00:30:15Burglars have admitted to never going into them,
00:30:17as there's nothing of value in toys.
00:30:21Take photos of all the serial numbers on your electronic devices,
00:30:25and create an inventory for insurance purposes.
00:30:3095% of break-ins are done by force,
00:30:33so it's time to reinforce your windows and doors.
00:30:37You can make it even more difficult for the crooks.
00:30:40Remove all stools, chairs, and ladders in the backyard,
00:30:44and put them into your garage.
00:30:46Otherwise, they will help provide easier access points
00:30:49to higher entrances, like the air conditioner box.
00:30:54This is one of their favorites.
00:30:56Without a way to reinforce it,
00:30:57it's easy to tear off, and creates an entrance.
00:31:01Don't make it easier for them with a step-up.
00:31:05Burglars can break down a weak door within one minute.
00:31:09Install a metal frame instead of wood for more support.
00:31:12The hinges and lock should have adequate strength
00:31:15to withstand being kicked long enough until they give up.
00:31:20With the lock as the remaining weak spot,
00:31:23this can easily be picked by an experienced thief.
00:31:26A simple protection lock that holds it in place
00:31:29will make sure it won't budge.
00:31:32The hinges on your garage door swing outwards,
00:31:36which makes it vulnerable,
00:31:37and can be accessed by taking the pins out of the hinges.
00:31:41Replace them with tamper-proof pins
00:31:46And lastly, the garage overhead door is one of the first places a burglar looks to access.
00:31:52They don't have a lock that fully secures them.
00:31:55Attach a padlock on the latch connecting it to the track,
00:31:59holding it in place.
00:32:01Your garage door doesn't have this option,
00:32:04so drill a hole in the track just above one of the rollers
00:32:08and attach a padlock.
00:32:11Robbers are scared of dogs,
00:32:13the territorial and loyal guardians of the house.
00:32:16A survey found that most houses burgled
00:32:19didn't have dogs
00:32:20because thieves don't want to draw attention during a heist.
00:32:25Unfortunately, you don't own one.
00:32:28But just placing a dog bowl outside the front door
00:32:31will discourage them.
00:32:34Burglars have adapted their craft with technology.
00:32:38Four out of five criminals use social media,
00:32:40like Facebook, Twitter, and Google Maps,
00:32:43to find their targets.
00:32:46Even sharing a photo with a house key in it
00:32:49is enough for a burglar to create their own key
00:32:51by zooming in and taking the exact measurements.
00:32:56Make sure your wireless network is secure
00:32:59and use a new, much stronger password while away.
00:33:02You're not only vulnerable to physical objects being stolen,
00:33:07valuable data like passwords and access codes
00:33:10can be taken through your network.
00:33:12And there's also the threat of infecting devices
00:33:15through malicious malware.
00:33:18You can also remove the vision of your house
00:33:21completely from Google Maps.
00:33:24Type in your home address,
00:33:26find the street view of your residence,
00:33:28press the Options button,
00:33:29and select Report a Problem.
00:33:33You'll be taken to a screen with an image of your home,
00:33:36with the option to move a red square
00:33:39to cover your property.
00:33:42Request it to be blurred under the option
00:33:45My Home and enter your exact address.
00:33:48It will only take a couple of days to be processed.
00:33:53Don't leave the radio on while away.
00:33:55It won't help.
00:33:57Through the burglar's method of scouting houses,
00:33:59they take note of radio and TV sounds.
00:34:03When they return,
00:34:05they check if they're still on,
00:34:07which just makes it easier to confirm
00:34:09that no one's home.
00:34:12An alternative option to show active presence at home
00:34:15is by making your own audio,
00:34:17something that plays ambient noises
00:34:19randomly throughout the day,
00:34:21with footsteps, conversations,
00:34:23and a dog barking.
00:34:26Leaving your lights on is also not a good idea.
00:34:30Someone spying will notice your house easier,
00:34:33especially at night,
00:34:34and you'll be further robbed on your electricity bill.
00:34:39You're just about ready to leave on your vacation
00:34:41and need to take the trash out.
00:34:44If you have some large boxes,
00:34:46break them down so they can fit inside the bin.
00:34:49Hide any clues about what valuables you recently received.
00:34:54Last check,
00:34:55all the doors are locked
00:34:57and no windows are left open.
00:34:59Now you can finally enjoy your trip.
00:35:03But,
00:35:03as you enjoy yourself in your picturesque location,
00:35:06leave any snaps on your phone
00:35:08while you're over there
00:35:09and post them online
00:35:11only when you return.
00:35:14If you do share your photos while you're away,
00:35:17it will have made all your preparations pointless.
00:35:20Every criminal in the area will know you're not home.
00:35:25But,
00:35:26with 2.5 million houses burgled annually in the USA,
00:35:29a house without a modern security system
00:35:32is 300% more likely to be broken into.
00:35:36When you get back from your break,
00:35:38it will be a great idea to install one.
00:35:41Here's how you can protect your bank card
00:35:43from potential fraudsters.
00:35:44Use a marker and cover the last four digits.
00:35:47You can also use a sticker that's easy to remove
00:35:50and place it over the security code.
00:35:52Have you had a house guest that didn't use a coaster?
00:35:55Get a hair dryer
00:35:56and hold it a couple of inches away from the stain.
00:35:59Blow it on medium heat for a couple of minutes
00:36:01to evaporate the watermark.
00:36:03If a faded ring remains,
00:36:05mix equal amounts of vinegar and olive oil in a bowl.
00:36:07So, wipe it onto the marked area
00:36:09and rub it in until the stain disappears.
00:36:11Then wipe it off.
00:36:13Don't waste time scrubbing the burnt stains
00:36:15off the bottom of a pan.
00:36:16Instead, fill it with water
00:36:18and add three tablespoons of salt.
00:36:20Let it sit overnight
00:36:21as the salt dissolves the burnt marks.
00:36:24And in the morning,
00:36:25pour the water out of the pan.
00:36:26This way,
00:36:27it will be much easier to scrub all that grease off.
00:36:30Picture this.
00:36:31You're on vacation
00:36:32and your shirt has become
00:36:33all crinkled inside the luggage.
00:36:35You need it tonight,
00:36:36but the hotel doesn't have an iron.
00:36:38Don't panic.
00:36:39Hang the shirt up in the bathroom.
00:36:41And while you relax in a hot shower,
00:36:43the heat and moisture will unwrinkle your shirt.
00:36:45It won't be perfect,
00:36:46but it will get much better without any effort.
00:36:49The football is on
00:36:50and it turns out
00:36:51you've run out of standard batteries.
00:36:53You can use a smaller battery instead
00:36:55that easily fits inside.
00:36:57Now take some aluminum foil
00:36:59and crunch it up.
00:37:00Fit it into the gap on the negative
00:37:02or flat end of the battery.
00:37:03All done.
00:37:04You can turn on the TV now.
00:37:07Once your flip-flops crack
00:37:08and the plug easily slips out of the hole,
00:37:10it's normally a sign
00:37:11that you need a new pair.
00:37:13But there's a way to extend their mileage.
00:37:15Push the plug back through the hole,
00:37:17then take a bread clip
00:37:18and attach it to the end.
00:37:20The clip will provide enough support
00:37:22for the plug to remain in place.
00:37:24You've received a package
00:37:25and the receipt is taped on.
00:37:27You've managed to detach it
00:37:28from the box,
00:37:29but how to separate the tape
00:37:31without ripping the paper.
00:37:32Hold both ends of the tape apart
00:37:34and by pulling it slowly,
00:37:36the tape stretches
00:37:37and separates itself from the paper
00:37:39without tearing it apart.
00:37:42Ziploc bags are perfect
00:37:43to keep things dry,
00:37:45but it would be great
00:37:46if they were larger.
00:37:47Take two
00:37:47and turn one of them inside out.
00:37:50They can now connect
00:37:51and work as one large bag,
00:37:53big enough to protect a keyboard.
00:37:55There's no need to carry
00:37:57your keys in your hand
00:37:58when you go for a jog.
00:37:59Instead,
00:38:00put them inside your pocket,
00:38:01take a rubber band,
00:38:02then tie it around the pocket
00:38:04from the inside.
00:38:05This stops the keys
00:38:06from falling out.
00:38:08You've broken your key in the door.
00:38:10It's stuck.
00:38:11Great.
00:38:12Arranging for a locksmith
00:38:13could cost up to $100,
00:38:15but for a cheaper
00:38:16and quicker option,
00:38:17try using a hot glue stick.
00:38:19Heat the end with a lighter
00:38:20and once it's warm enough to melt,
00:38:22push the glue into the keyhole.
00:38:24The melted glue
00:38:25will enter the available space
00:38:27covering part of the key.
00:38:28Once it cools,
00:38:30it compresses
00:38:30and gains a strong hold
00:38:32of the key's end.
00:38:33Now,
00:38:34just pull it out.
00:38:36If you need to siphon liquid
00:38:37through a hose
00:38:38and want to avoid using your mouth,
00:38:40put one end in the liquid
00:38:41and hold the other upwards
00:38:43with your thumb closing the top.
00:38:44Now shake up and down.
00:38:46This jiggle motion
00:38:47pushes liquid upwards
00:38:48a little each time.
00:38:50And once it reaches the top,
00:38:52lower the exit point
00:38:53and let gravity do the rest.
00:38:55You've left your keys
00:38:56locked inside the car.
00:38:58It's an older model
00:38:59with a roll-down window.
00:39:00You could get the coat hanger
00:39:01and begin the long process
00:39:03of finding the lock.
00:39:04Or use duct tape.
00:39:06Make about 20
00:39:06two-foot-long strands.
00:39:08Stick them onto the window,
00:39:10allowing enough room
00:39:11for the tape to grab onto
00:39:12at the bottom.
00:39:13Then with a friend,
00:39:14take the ends of the tape,
00:39:15holding them together,
00:39:16and pull downwards.
00:39:18The force will allow
00:39:19the window to lower enough
00:39:20that you can unlock the door.
00:39:23While drilling long screws
00:39:24into hardwood,
00:39:25your old drill
00:39:26might not have enough power,
00:39:27leaving them only halfway in.
00:39:30Before the drill gives up,
00:39:31get a block of wax
00:39:32and scrape the edges
00:39:33of the screws with it.
00:39:34The wax works like a lubricant,
00:39:36melting as it gets warm,
00:39:38and providing easy entry
00:39:39for the screw.
00:39:41You're out camping,
00:39:42but you didn't bring anything
00:39:43to light the barbecue.
00:39:44Take a small plastic bag
00:39:46that won't leak.
00:39:47Fill it up with water
00:39:48and close it tight,
00:39:49making a round bubble.
00:39:51Hold it over where you want
00:39:52to catch the light
00:39:53from the sun.
00:39:54The bag of water will work
00:39:55like a magnifying glass,
00:39:57starting up the barbecue,
00:39:58just as long as it's a sunny day.
00:40:01Missing a corkscrew
00:40:02or a cork breaking halfway?
00:40:04By using a stove lighter,
00:40:05heat the top of the bottle.
00:40:07The heat slightly expands the glass,
00:40:09and this forces the cork
00:40:10out the top.
00:40:12You've superglued
00:40:13your fingers again.
00:40:14Take some salt
00:40:15and pour it on top
00:40:16of your stuck fingers.
00:40:17Put your fingers into the water
00:40:19and slowly rub.
00:40:20The mixture will dissolve the glue
00:40:22and release you in no time.
00:40:24While hanging up a painting,
00:40:26it can be impossible
00:40:27to find that stubborn nail.
00:40:28Place a fork upside down
00:40:30and insert it
00:40:31so the nail is in between
00:40:32the middle fork teeth.
00:40:34The fork has provided
00:40:35a long arm
00:40:36that's separated from the wall,
00:40:37making it easier
00:40:39to slip the string
00:40:39of the painting over the nail.
00:40:41Once it's perfectly balanced,
00:40:43simply remove the fork.
00:40:47You need to put a cake
00:40:48into a container,
00:40:49but taking it out again later
00:40:51by lifting it up
00:40:51from the inside
00:40:52might ruin the cake.
00:40:54Put the lid upside down
00:40:55and place the cake on the lid.
00:40:57The base of the container
00:40:58is now the lid,
00:41:00making it much easier
00:41:01to access slice by slice.
00:41:04Pour out water
00:41:05more efficiently
00:41:06from large jugs
00:41:07and bottles by swirling.
00:41:09This will make the liquid
00:41:10inside spin,
00:41:11creating a vortex.
00:41:12The vortex allows for the air
00:41:14to flow back into the bottle
00:41:16as the water pours out,
00:41:17much faster
00:41:18than the glugging alternative.
00:41:21There's an easier
00:41:23and less messy way
00:41:24to remove eggshells
00:41:25from a boiled egg.
00:41:26Once fully boiled,
00:41:27crack the shell
00:41:28on both ends
00:41:29by tapping them.
00:41:30On one end,
00:41:31pinch off the shell.
00:41:32Use the opened end
00:41:33to blow with your mouth.
00:41:34The force of air
00:41:35will push the flesh
00:41:36and expand the eggshell,
00:41:38forcing out the egg undamaged.
00:41:42When the hinges
00:41:43of your laptop break,
00:41:44repairing them
00:41:45can cost up to $300.
00:41:47A far cheaper fix
00:41:48is to buy a picture frame
00:41:50and tape it
00:41:50to the back of the screen.
00:41:53You've dropped
00:41:53a small piece of jewelry
00:41:54on the floor,
00:41:55seemingly impossible to find.
00:41:57Take a stocking
00:41:59and place it
00:41:59over the end
00:42:00of the vacuum hose.
00:42:01Give the area
00:42:02a good vacuum
00:42:02and check the end periodically.
00:42:04You will eventually
00:42:05find it sitting at the end.
00:42:07You've drilled a hole
00:42:08in the wall,
00:42:09but the drill hole
00:42:10is now too wide.
00:42:11Remove the screw
00:42:12and find an object
00:42:13that is slightly shorter
00:42:15and thinner.
00:42:16Pieces of plastic,
00:42:17small wires,
00:42:18paper clips,
00:42:18or even toothpicks
00:42:19are perfect.
00:42:20Place whichever item
00:42:22you find inside the hole.
00:42:23It's filled the gap enough
00:42:24so the screw
00:42:25will now re-enter securely.
00:42:27Taking the trash out
00:42:28can put you
00:42:29in a gross scenario
00:42:30of getting bin juice on you.
00:42:32A great way
00:42:33to avoid this
00:42:33is by placing old papers
00:42:35at the bottom of the bag.
00:42:36Now,
00:42:37not only does it absorb
00:42:38all the liquids
00:42:39from the food
00:42:40and other sources,
00:42:41but also helps prevent
00:42:42bad smells
00:42:43from forming
00:42:43within a bin.
00:42:45Nobody likes mosquitoes
00:42:46and pesticides
00:42:47are pricey.
00:42:48A cheap alternative
00:42:49is to take a plastic bottle
00:42:51and cut the top part off
00:42:53from the bottom
00:42:53of the funnel.
00:42:54After removing it,
00:42:56turn it upside down
00:42:57and put it inside the bottle.
00:42:58Mix two cups of warm water
00:43:00with two tablespoons of sugar.
00:43:02The mosquitoes
00:43:03will be attracted
00:43:04to the formula inside
00:43:05and become trapped.
00:43:07Now,
00:43:07just sit back
00:43:08and relax
00:43:08without getting bitten.
00:43:12Did you know
00:43:13that most break-ins
00:43:14take place
00:43:15in the middle of the day?
00:43:17The FBI says
00:43:18burglaries happen midday
00:43:20because people
00:43:21are outside the house.
00:43:23Don't let your home
00:43:24be an easy mark
00:43:25for theft.
00:43:26Here are 10 tips
00:43:28to protect your home
00:43:29and some security items
00:43:30you might need
00:43:31along the way.
00:43:33Number one on our list
00:43:35is portable door locks.
00:43:37They aren't just designed
00:43:38for regular houses.
00:43:40Let's say
00:43:41you stay
00:43:42in a rented house
00:43:43where other guests
00:43:44also come and go.
00:43:46You can carry
00:43:47one of these
00:43:48portable locks
00:43:49with you.
00:43:50Many rooms
00:43:51have secondary
00:43:52locking mechanisms
00:43:53besides the regular lock
00:43:54like security chains
00:43:56attached to the door
00:43:57but you shouldn't
00:43:58always rely on them.
00:44:00These mechanisms
00:44:01are only held
00:44:02by screws.
00:44:03It means
00:44:03they're easy
00:44:04to dislocate.
00:44:07There are many
00:44:08portable lock models
00:44:09so what should
00:44:10you look for?
00:44:11Ease of use
00:44:12is the key
00:44:13for installation
00:44:14and removal
00:44:15in case of emergency.
00:44:17Most inward swing doors
00:44:18are suitable
00:44:19for these items.
00:44:21Adalock
00:44:21is a good example.
00:44:22You can find it
00:44:23on Amazon.
00:44:24It's fairly inexpensive,
00:44:26has a versatile design
00:44:27and most importantly
00:44:29comes in one piece.
00:44:31It takes seconds
00:44:32to upgrade your safety.
00:44:33You insert the claws
00:44:34into the door's
00:44:35strike plate
00:44:36and then
00:44:36close the door.
00:44:37It'll be held
00:44:38in position
00:44:39with a handle.
00:44:40There you go.
00:44:42Burglars don't hang out
00:44:44in your house
00:44:44or bother stealing
00:44:46heavy stuff
00:44:47like TVs.
00:44:48They want to get in
00:44:49and out
00:44:50in under 10 minutes.
00:44:51What you should do
00:44:53is take some precautions
00:44:54to slow them down.
00:44:56Laminated glass
00:44:57is great for this.
00:44:59You should consider
00:45:00investing in it.
00:45:01normal windows
00:45:02that are made
00:45:03with tempered glass
00:45:04can shatter easily
00:45:05but laminated windows
00:45:07are like shields.
00:45:08They can crack
00:45:09but not break apart.
00:45:11Instead of making
00:45:12smashing noises
00:45:13and grabbing attention,
00:45:15the burglar
00:45:15will probably leave.
00:45:17The structure
00:45:18of laminated glass
00:45:19is different
00:45:20from the regular one.
00:45:21It holds the piece
00:45:22intact even
00:45:23after a strong impact.
00:45:25Laminated glass windows
00:45:27are 100 times stiffer
00:45:28and 5 times more durable
00:45:30than standard.
00:45:32What makes these types
00:45:33of glass so special?
00:45:35Firstly,
00:45:36it's made with layers.
00:45:38There are two layers
00:45:39of glass
00:45:39and there's a vinyl material
00:45:41in between
00:45:42that helps keep
00:45:43the two layers intact.
00:45:45As a bonus,
00:45:46laminated ones
00:45:47have a soundproofing feature.
00:45:49Two birds with one stone.
00:45:55The interlayer
00:45:57absorbs some
00:45:57of the outside noise.
00:45:59It's glass after all.
00:46:00Aren't we going to see
00:46:01the vinyl layer?
00:46:02That might be the question
00:46:04that popped into your head.
00:46:06Nope,
00:46:07laminated glass
00:46:08is transparent
00:46:09just like other types.
00:46:10Enjoy the crystal clear views
00:46:12while staying safe.
00:46:13I would say
00:46:14but unfortunately,
00:46:15it's expensive
00:46:16to get these
00:46:17specifically manufactured
00:46:18burglar deterring glasses.
00:46:20You can have professionals
00:46:21install a laminate film
00:46:23onto your standard window
00:46:24or you can even
00:46:26buy security film.
00:46:27They all work
00:46:28according to the same principle
00:46:30but obviously,
00:46:31these alternatives
00:46:32cannot be as strong
00:46:33as the laminated glass itself.
00:46:36The next few tips
00:46:38come from an ex-burglar,
00:46:40Michael Fraser.
00:46:41Now,
00:46:41he's giving bits of advice
00:46:43on how to protect
00:46:44from theft.
00:46:46His first tip
00:46:47is quite interesting.
00:46:48Don't put a
00:46:49beware of the dog sticker
00:46:51if you have a dog.
00:46:52If a dog
00:46:53can walk around the house
00:46:54without triggering the alarm,
00:46:56so can a human.
00:46:58This is the way
00:46:58burglars think.
00:47:00Plus,
00:47:01many dogs
00:47:01get friendly
00:47:02in a short time
00:47:03unless they're
00:47:04specifically trained
00:47:05to catch strangers.
00:47:06Otherwise,
00:47:07they can easily
00:47:08be put in a room
00:47:09and well,
00:47:10you know the rest.
00:47:11Bye-bye to precious items.
00:47:14Advertising your house
00:47:15for sale online
00:47:16is a standard procedure
00:47:17to attract potential buyers
00:47:19but also thieves.
00:47:22With your innocent pics,
00:47:23burglars can have floor plans
00:47:25with virtual tours.
00:47:26They can easily spot
00:47:27the entry
00:47:28and escape routes.
00:47:29Sounds like a perfect plan
00:47:31to rob a house.
00:47:33Number five
00:47:34is buying a home security system.
00:47:37It helps prevent thefts
00:47:38and notifies you
00:47:39if that happens.
00:47:41According to the data,
00:47:42homes without a security system
00:47:44are almost three times
00:47:45more vulnerable to break-ins.
00:47:47There are numerous ones
00:47:49to choose from.
00:47:50Some are pricey
00:47:51but luckily,
00:47:52there are affordable options too.
00:47:54You don't even have
00:47:55to call professionals.
00:47:56This do-it-yourself
00:47:57security system
00:47:58from Amazon
00:47:59is an example
00:48:00of a budget-friendly gadget
00:48:01with useful features.
00:48:03These types of devices
00:48:05are designed
00:48:05to be easy to install.
00:48:07You'll be guided
00:48:08through an app
00:48:09for the software
00:48:10and for the product itself.
00:48:12Bonus,
00:48:12you won't have to deal
00:48:13with screws,
00:48:14tools,
00:48:15or drilling.
00:48:16They have fast
00:48:17emergency dispatch
00:48:18that can notify
00:48:18the authorities
00:48:19if you say so.
00:48:21Since it's easy to set up,
00:48:23it's perfect
00:48:23for short-term residents too.
00:48:25Remember I mentioned
00:48:26that if a dog
00:48:27can walk in the house,
00:48:28so can a thief?
00:48:30Well,
00:48:30technology is not
00:48:32in favor of thieves.
00:48:33These types of devices
00:48:34can now detect intruders
00:48:36and be friends
00:48:37with your pet.
00:48:38The sensors
00:48:39can be put in the window,
00:48:41doors,
00:48:41and corners,
00:48:42but still be adjusted
00:48:43to avoid fake alarms
00:48:45by the pets.
00:48:47Another device
00:48:48to add a layer
00:48:49of protection to you,
00:48:50especially in shared residences
00:48:52like dorms,
00:48:53is a doorstop alarm.
00:48:55These devices
00:48:56are very compact,
00:48:57so you can put them
00:48:59in your luggage
00:48:59and take them
00:49:00on your dream vacation.
00:49:02You can use it
00:49:03in your daily life.
00:49:04A doorstop alarm
00:49:05can be used
00:49:06on any door
00:49:07as long as you
00:49:08place it inside.
00:49:09It works as a door wedge,
00:49:10but it keeps
00:49:11the door closed.
00:49:12How does it work?
00:49:13When the alarm
00:49:14is triggered,
00:49:15it will keep the intruder
00:49:16outside the door
00:49:17and activate
00:49:18a noise alarm.
00:49:19It can wake the owner
00:49:20of the house
00:49:20or neighbors.
00:49:22This one,
00:49:22again,
00:49:23can be easily found
00:49:24on Amazon.
00:49:26Ex-Burglar Michael
00:49:28also recommends
00:49:29thinking like a thief.
00:49:30Ask yourself,
00:49:31how would I get in?
00:49:33It's a great
00:49:34starting exercise
00:49:34for discovering
00:49:35vulnerable spots.
00:49:37Walk around your home.
00:49:39Is there a window
00:49:40that can be easily opened?
00:49:41Oh wait,
00:49:42is it your laptop
00:49:43on the desk
00:49:44that can be seen
00:49:45from the street?
00:49:46Speaking of the street,
00:49:47if you buy
00:49:48a new electronic device
00:49:50like a TV
00:49:50or a computer,
00:49:52don't leave
00:49:52the empty cartons
00:49:53displayed near
00:49:54the trash container.
00:49:55This looks like
00:49:56an invitation to thieves.
00:49:58They will know
00:50:00that you have
00:50:00expensive electronics
00:50:01inside the house.
00:50:03Instead,
00:50:04break down
00:50:05the cardboard boxes
00:50:06and then put them
00:50:07away for recycling.
00:50:09Unfortunately,
00:50:11first floor windows
00:50:12are entry points
00:50:13in 23%
00:50:14of home break-ins.
00:50:15To prevent this,
00:50:16you can purchase
00:50:17a wireless alarm kit.
00:50:19When it comes
00:50:20to the front door,
00:50:21installing a double-keyed
00:50:23deadbolt
00:50:23can be a solution.
00:50:25Similarly,
00:50:26motion sensor lighting
00:50:27does the job.
00:50:29Do you have blind spots
00:50:31around your home?
00:50:32Upgrade to a security camera
00:50:34with night vision.
00:50:35If you want to see
00:50:36what's happening
00:50:36inside your house
00:50:37rather than outside,
00:50:39you can get one of these
00:50:40cool security gadgets.
00:50:42Orbi Robotic Mobile Sphere
00:50:44is like a ball,
00:50:45but it has a camera
00:50:46inserted in it.
00:50:47It doesn't have
00:50:48a limited view.
00:50:49Imagine,
00:50:50you're at the office
00:50:51and want to play
00:50:52with your dog.
00:50:53Your 4-pod best friend
00:50:55can chase the ball
00:50:56at home while you're away
00:50:57controlling the device.
00:50:58Ah, okay.
00:50:59We're here to save
00:51:00your house from burglars,
00:51:01so I'll leave fun pet toys
00:51:03for another video.
00:51:05Here is a shocking truth
00:51:07about fences.
00:51:08Most people believe
00:51:09that fences are like
00:51:10guardians protecting
00:51:11their property.
00:51:12Sorry to break it to you,
00:51:14but even tall and solid ones
00:51:15aren't as secure
00:51:16as you believe.
00:51:17The number one rule
00:51:19of a thief
00:51:19is not to be caught,
00:51:21and if they broke
00:51:22into a house
00:51:23with fences at night,
00:51:24they'd be perfectly covered.
00:51:26Your neighbors can't see
00:51:28who that person is,
00:51:29you know,
00:51:29unless they have
00:51:30x-ray vision.
00:51:31The fences
00:51:32should be hard to climb.
00:51:33One of the points
00:51:34of having a fence
00:51:35is privacy,
00:51:36but I'm just saying
00:51:37metal, wire,
00:51:38and picket fences
00:51:39are harder
00:51:40for intruders to fly in.
00:51:42So, we crack
00:51:43the burglar's code.
00:51:44Implementing the tips
00:51:45on our list
00:51:46might help you
00:51:46discourage
00:51:47and prevent burglary
00:51:48and keep you safe.
00:51:50Did you experience
00:51:51such unpleasant incidents?
00:51:53If so,
00:51:54do you have any other tips
00:51:55for fellow brightsiders
00:51:56to watch out for?
00:51:59Did you know
00:52:00that every 15 seconds,
00:52:02a home burglary
00:52:03occurs in the United States?
00:52:05This means that
00:52:06approximately
00:52:064,800 burglaries
00:52:08happen every day.
00:52:10And the police
00:52:11can only solve
00:52:1213%
00:52:13of all the reported cases.
00:52:15So, yeah,
00:52:15home security
00:52:16is nothing to be joked about.
00:52:18And so I won't.
00:52:19But still,
00:52:20don't worry.
00:52:21It's not like
00:52:21you need to turn
00:52:22your house
00:52:23into a fortress
00:52:23to feel safe.
00:52:24There are a great number
00:52:26of things you can do
00:52:27to keep the bad people
00:52:28out of your house
00:52:29and keep your valuables
00:52:30safe without
00:52:31breaking the bank.
00:52:34First things first,
00:52:35homes without
00:52:36a security system
00:52:37are 300%
00:52:38more likely
00:52:39to be broken into
00:52:40and burglarized.
00:52:41So,
00:52:42you should definitely
00:52:43consider setting up one.
00:52:45However,
00:52:46there are many
00:52:46different types
00:52:47of security systems
00:52:48out there.
00:52:49That's why
00:52:49it can get overwhelming
00:52:50to choose the best one
00:52:52for your specific needs,
00:52:53desired level
00:52:54of protection,
00:52:55and budget.
00:52:56Yet again,
00:52:57it all comes down
00:52:58to two options,
00:52:59professional installations
00:53:00and DIY installations.
00:53:03Let's go through
00:53:03both of them together.
00:53:05Professional installed systems
00:53:07require professional monitoring
00:53:09and usually have contracts
00:53:10that are likely long-term.
00:53:12Professional systems
00:53:13come with fees.
00:53:15However,
00:53:15companies usually require
00:53:17lower upfront equipment costs
00:53:19since they will spread the cost
00:53:21throughout the course
00:53:21of your contract.
00:53:22Once you decide
00:53:23on a professional installation,
00:53:25The company will first
00:53:26schedule an appointment
00:53:27with one of their
00:53:28experienced technicians
00:53:29who can conduct
00:53:30a security assessment
00:53:32and explain
00:53:33all your options to you.
00:53:34And as long as
00:53:35your contract is valid,
00:53:36you can report
00:53:37any problems you have
00:53:39with the system to them
00:53:40so they can make sure
00:53:41the equipment works correctly.
00:53:43All in all,
00:53:44you should pick
00:53:45professionally installed
00:53:46security systems
00:53:47if you want to
00:53:48put up your feet
00:53:49and relax
00:53:49instead of watching
00:53:50long hours
00:53:51of tutorial videos
00:53:52or reading pages
00:53:54of manuals.
00:53:55Still,
00:53:56professionally installed
00:53:57security systems
00:53:58may not work for you,
00:53:59especially if you're a renter
00:54:01due to the contract
00:54:02commitment conditions.
00:54:03Or maybe you're not a renter,
00:54:05but you simply have
00:54:06budget limitations.
00:54:07That's where
00:54:08DIY installations
00:54:09come in handy.
00:54:10The greatest thing
00:54:12about DIY systems
00:54:13is that while
00:54:14the average monitoring
00:54:15price is around
00:54:16$50 per month
00:54:18on professionally
00:54:19installed systems,
00:54:20it is around
00:54:20$28 a month
00:54:22on DIY ones.
00:54:23Plus,
00:54:24there are no
00:54:24installation fees
00:54:25with DIY systems either.
00:54:27Yet again,
00:54:28you should expect
00:54:29higher upfront
00:54:30equipment costs
00:54:31if you're going
00:54:31to pick this option.
00:54:32And there's also
00:54:33the fact that
00:54:34DIY home security
00:54:35systems come
00:54:36with the risks
00:54:37of improper
00:54:38equipment placement
00:54:39and missing security
00:54:40vulnerabilities
00:54:41a pro would catch.
00:54:42At the end of the day,
00:54:44the most important
00:54:45thing you need to do
00:54:46before choosing a system
00:54:47is evaluate the needs
00:54:49of your neighborhood
00:54:49as well as your house.
00:54:53Did you know
00:54:53that 34% of burglars
00:54:55simply use the front door
00:54:57when breaking
00:54:58into a home?
00:54:58That means
00:54:59if your door
00:55:00is not strong
00:55:01and secure enough,
00:55:02you're basically
00:55:03inviting the burglars in.
00:55:05So,
00:55:05setting up security
00:55:06systems
00:55:07is not enough.
00:55:08You need to inspect
00:55:09all your exterior doors,
00:55:11too.
00:55:11Make sure the door frames
00:55:13are strong
00:55:13and the hinges
00:55:14are protected.
00:55:15You can always use
00:55:16door reinforcement kits
00:55:17to add extra protection.
00:55:19If your door
00:55:20has a mail slot,
00:55:21don't forget to check
00:55:22if it's possible
00:55:23for someone to reach
00:55:24through it
00:55:25to unlock the door.
00:55:26When moving into
00:55:27a house or an apartment
00:55:28that was previously
00:55:29occupied by someone else,
00:55:31change the door locks.
00:55:33This is the easiest way
00:55:34to ensure
00:55:35that no stranger
00:55:36can just walk
00:55:37into your house
00:55:38using the keys.
00:55:39One other way
00:55:40to boost security
00:55:41for your door
00:55:42is to use
00:55:43wireless doorbell cameras.
00:55:45This one from Amazon
00:55:46is extremely user-friendly.
00:55:48It's 100% wireless,
00:55:50it has a built-in
00:55:51rechargeable battery
00:55:52that can last
00:55:52one to two months,
00:55:53so you won't have
00:55:54to charge those
00:55:55too often.
00:55:56You can track
00:55:57the battery situation
00:55:58from the phone app.
00:55:59It also has
00:56:00motion detection technology
00:56:01and super night vision,
00:56:03and you don't need
00:56:04to worry about
00:56:05the weather conditions
00:56:05because it's also
00:56:06waterproof.
00:56:08By the way,
00:56:09don't forget about
00:56:09the sliding glass doors.
00:56:11You can use a window bar
00:56:12or dowel in the track
00:56:14to keep them
00:56:14from being forced open,
00:56:15or you can add
00:56:16a door sensor
00:56:17or glass break sensor
00:56:18to get alerted
00:56:19if and when
00:56:20someone is tampering
00:56:21with them.
00:56:23We're getting into
00:56:24the very basics
00:56:25of home security now.
00:56:27The percentage
00:56:28of burglars
00:56:28entering a home
00:56:29through a window
00:56:30is as high as 23%.
00:56:32The main reason
00:56:33for that is because
00:56:34most of the time,
00:56:36people forget
00:56:36to lock their windows.
00:56:38Yet again,
00:56:39burglars can always
00:56:40break the glass.
00:56:41If you don't want
00:56:42that to happen,
00:56:43you can try
00:56:43reinforcing the glass
00:56:45with window security film,
00:56:46adding window bars,
00:56:48or installing
00:56:48window sensors.
00:56:49If none of that
00:56:50is possible,
00:56:51you can also plant
00:56:52prickly bushes
00:56:53under the first floor windows
00:56:54to discourage burglars
00:56:56from choosing
00:56:57your house
00:56:57to break in.
00:57:00Now,
00:57:00what's the difference
00:57:01between an actor
00:57:02and a burglar?
00:57:03Burglars don't like
00:57:04to be in the spotlight.
00:57:06That's why
00:57:07having outdoor lighting
00:57:08is to your advantage.
00:57:09Lights should be placed
00:57:10around your front
00:57:11and back yards,
00:57:12along pathways,
00:57:13and near the garage.
00:57:15To make your outdoor
00:57:16security lights
00:57:17more effective,
00:57:18you can use
00:57:19motion-activated ones.
00:57:20Take this one,
00:57:21for example.
00:57:22It's solar-powered,
00:57:23so it'll help you
00:57:24save energy.
00:57:25But that doesn't mean
00:57:26you won't have any light
00:57:28once the clouds
00:57:28cover the sky.
00:57:29It's able to run
00:57:31four to five nights
00:57:32on rainy days.
00:57:35Also,
00:57:36don't allow the burglars
00:57:37to play hide-and-see.
00:57:38While trees and shrubs
00:57:40may make your home
00:57:41look more beautiful,
00:57:42they also provide
00:57:43a convenient hiding spot
00:57:45for burglars.
00:57:46That's why you should
00:57:47trim down trees and plants,
00:57:48at least the ones
00:57:49close to your house,
00:57:50that could be used
00:57:51for cover.
00:57:52Choose smaller flowers
00:57:53and bushes instead,
00:57:54so that burglars
00:57:55don't have a hiding spot
00:57:57to wait for you
00:57:57to leave your home.
00:57:59The same thing goes
00:58:00for any lock gates,
00:58:01sheds,
00:58:01or other outdoor
00:58:03buildings you have.
00:58:04Make sure those
00:58:05places are locked.
00:58:06Burglars can use
00:58:07stools and ladders
00:58:08to climb in
00:58:09from the windows, too.
00:58:10So don't tempt them
00:58:11by leaving one outside.
00:58:14Now, this one goes
00:58:15without saying,
00:58:16but I will anyway.
00:58:17Lock the garage.
00:58:18Even if there's no access
00:58:20to your home through there,
00:58:21it's likely that you still
00:58:23have plenty of valuable
00:58:24stuff stored in there
00:58:25that burglars
00:58:26might be interested in.
00:58:28It's also wise
00:58:29to store your garage door
00:58:30opener inside your house
00:58:32rather than leave it
00:58:33in your car.
00:58:34This way,
00:58:35you'll be preventing
00:58:36burglars from easily
00:58:37taking it.
00:58:38If you use a security code
00:58:40to open your garage,
00:58:41then keep it confidential
00:58:42and avoid entering it
00:58:44in front of other people,
00:58:45including neighbors.
00:58:46Some neighbors,
00:58:47well,
00:58:48you just don't know.
00:58:49Installing a driveway alarm
00:58:51will also help
00:58:52secure the garage.
00:58:54Now, these days,
00:58:56not just burglars,
00:58:57but porch pirates,
00:58:58aka package thieves,
00:59:00are a big problem, too.
00:59:01Last year,
00:59:02almost one in seven Americans
00:59:04fell victim to them.
00:59:05This is where security cameras
00:59:07proved to be useful.
00:59:08First of all,
00:59:09they work as a deterrent.
00:59:11And secondly,
00:59:11if someone were to
00:59:12really steal your package,
00:59:14you'd be able to identify them
00:59:16thanks to the security footage.
00:59:18If you can't spare some money
00:59:19to get a good security camera
00:59:21for the time being,
00:59:21you can opt for a fake one.
00:59:24They're a lot cheaper,
00:59:25and they will help
00:59:25make your home
00:59:26look more secure
00:59:27than it actually is.
00:59:29This one is worth considering
00:59:30if you're searching the market.
00:59:32It contains a flashing light,
00:59:34which makes it look
00:59:34as realistic as it gets.
00:59:37Now, last but not least,
00:59:39having a safe wouldn't hurt.
00:59:41And don't worry,
00:59:42it doesn't have to be
00:59:43one of those uncrackable
00:59:44giant titanium ones
00:59:46in the heist movies,
00:59:47like Ocean's 23.
00:59:49Burglars may still be able
00:59:50to break into your house
00:59:52despite all the precautions.
00:59:53So, you still need to make sure
00:59:55your valuables are protected
00:59:57at all times.
00:59:58You can hide all things important
01:00:00from your expensive jewelry
01:00:01to your vital documents in there
01:00:03just to be extra safe.
01:00:05If you're going to get yourself one,
01:00:07make sure it is fire-resistant,
01:00:09waterproof,
01:00:10and heavy enough
01:00:11that a thief can't pick it up
01:00:12and walk away with it.
01:00:14As they say,
01:00:15better safe than sorry.
