00:00Expedition Overland's Pan American Series is presented by General Tire. Anywhere is possible.
00:42Expedition Overland is crossing a special milestone. Our first international to international border.
00:50So, we are driving to the border of Mexico and Belize via Chetumal, Mexico. It should be an easy one,
01:02so Kurt says it's probably just going to be in and out. We've got to get some insurance. Hopefully no
01:07more than four or three hours, so...
01:10This crossing makes you realize that you're getting pretty far from home.
01:16So, it is a requirement for all Belize people to have insurance. If you don't have insurance and they catch
01:23you, it's six months in jail, including tourists.
01:27What we don't have right now is comprehensive insurance in Belize, so if we wreck a truck on our end,
01:32we're out. We're done. So, we've got to be just a little extra. More careful.
01:37Supposedly, we can drive over that bridge that says, welcome to Belize.
01:40We'll technically be in Belize, but it's a free zone, so we're going to go over the bridge, hang a
01:45right, and we'll go to the other border and see if we can't get our vehicle money refunded.
01:49And then we can physically enter Belize, and then we'll be on our way.
01:52Very good.
01:55So, they didn't know that over there? No.
01:57Oh, wow. They told us we had to come here to get the money back.
01:59What a customer!
02:00Yeah. We're here at the Bonhercito at the west border of Chetamal into Belize, and we were told we don't
02:07actually have to surrender the vehicle import permits, that they're good for 60 days so we can go the duration
02:11of the trip.
02:12Vehicles will be returning to the U.S. so they can keep the same temporary vehicle permit, and she said
02:17she hopes we won't have any problems with that.
02:20So, we've got fingers crossed.
02:21Wow.
02:22Clay got a name and a number from her.
02:24So, we've got some rapport, because that conflicts all the info we read ahead of time that you're going to
02:28have to surrender that when you leave or surrender it in the same border.
02:31Having our exit and entrance papers completed, we have a couple more stops, fumigation, and then a final entrance search
02:38before we can be released into Belize.
02:42Hopefully, everything goes well.
02:44He wants us to have, they think we have probably more gear than enthusiasts have, so they want us to
02:52get a list, a documented list of everything we have and values.
02:56So, and he said he's willing to then stamp it, and then if we get pulled over down the road,
03:00we have that to show them that, like, that's what we brought, we didn't buy it, we didn't steal it.
03:06I've never had to do this before at any border.
03:08Yeah.
03:08So, what I also, Rick, what I say is we go over here, and we type it up with them
03:12over here, not in our cars.
03:14Yeah.
03:14And we keep them away from the vehicles.
03:16Yeah.
03:16And then, and then we just print it over there, and then have them stamp it.
03:20Yep.
03:21Right there, and so he never, hopefully he never comes back to the rigs to look at them.
03:24To inspect item by item.
03:25Yeah.
03:25While Kurt and I tackle that, the other guys are left to wait patiently.
03:29So our game, we cannot listen to this artist who was born in 1989.
03:39We started out this trip listening to this specific musical artist quite often.
03:45Say her name.
03:46And now we're trying to take a break so we don't burn out on it.
03:51So we've been playing this game where for 24 hours we cannot sing, listen to, speak of, make any reference
03:58to lyrics of this certain musical artist.
04:02We can't listen to her until we have succeeded.
04:06When did we start this game, guys?
04:07Like two days ago.
04:08Two days ago.
04:10And I think the longest we've gone is 12?
04:13Yeah, overnight.
04:14Overnight.
04:15While we were sleeping.
04:16While we were sleeping.
04:17Which is the worst part of this whole game.
04:20Because we all want to listen to her.
04:22I personally don't think we're going to make it.
04:25Ever.
04:26We've got three weeks left to travel.
04:29I still don't think we're going to win.
04:31We wrote out a list.
04:32Three laptops.
04:33Four cameras.
04:34Seven personal bags.
04:35Battery chargers.
04:35Hard drives.
04:36Refrigerators.
04:37One stove.
04:38Three GPS units.
04:39Etc.
04:39Etc.
04:40Scuba dive with fins.
04:42Etc.
04:42Retro.
04:42And then we took it in there.
04:44He said go have it stamped.
04:45Had it stamped.
04:46Then he said well you go out and have the customs guy sign it now.
04:49And we got out to the customs guy and he's like I don't need to sign it.
04:52You guys can go.
04:53So anyway, let's leave.
04:54Alright.
04:55We're done.
04:56Welcome to Belize.
04:58With the border behind us, we get our first glimpse of Belize.
05:03We just were at lunch and a local lady that came down here and owns a shop.
05:09She travels across this very often.
05:11And she told us about it.
05:12And it's a hand cranked ferry where there's three shifts and the guys switch off.
05:18And you just drive up on the platform.
05:20And then they hand crank you right across the river.
05:38Alright.
05:39Here we go Kyle.
05:42That's true.
05:44So this guy said there's alligators in this river.
05:47Really?
05:48I can't imagine having to crank vehicles across this all day.
06:00We have a long way to travel.
06:02We put a couple hard hours of driving and as evening sets in, we turn south into the mountains
06:07to make our way into a national park.
06:14I don't even know if it has a name, but we've been calling it a thousand foot waterfall.
06:19So I think that name pretty much says exactly what it is.
06:22I've never seen a waterfall in Thousand feet Falls.
06:24I can't quite comprehend that.
06:27We are all just kind of in awe.
06:29It's like night and day difference from across the border from Mexico into here.
06:34Really neat place.
06:35People are super sweet.
06:37Most of them speak English.
06:39All the signs are in English and everything.
06:42And outside it smells so good.
06:43Smells like dirt.
06:44That's a dirty mother dirty road.
06:46And it's bumpy enough to where we want to air down.
06:48Hello dogs.
06:50Hey puppies.
06:51Hey.
06:53You're cute.
06:54You're cute.
06:55Hey red.
06:57Hey Kyle.
06:59Airing down was more of a chore than usual.
07:01We might have forgotten some important air down tools.
07:04It's a very bush league way to air down tires.
07:07We're exposing ourselves as amateurs right now.
07:10I hope nobody passes.
07:13Yes.
07:14Found it.
07:14We saved some face though because Jeff found one squirreled away somewhere.
07:18Found it.
07:19Here we go.
07:20She's going to ride like a Cadillac now.
07:22Even though this road is extremely pothole.
07:25I think we lost some dental fillings along the way coming in.
07:29It doesn't ride quite as nice as the 4Runners do.
07:32And it rides pretty decent but this road is bad.
07:35While the guys aired down the tires, I had a small emergency to attend to.
07:41And as soon as I was done, I turned around and there's a house right there.
07:46Right through the trees.
07:48Are you serious?
07:50There's no way to hurry up and get out of here.
07:52The two little puppies were there.
07:54I'm like, oh that's where they live.
07:55There's people that live there.
07:56Oh no.
07:57So maybe some locals got the full moon.
08:02There's no way to go.
08:04With the sun setting behind the mountains, the road becomes steep and even more rough.
08:10Out of nowhere, a motorcyclist coming down the road loses control and crashes right in front of us.
08:18Hey man, are you alright?
08:22Need anything?
08:24Yep, I'll step out.
08:29It's quickly evident that he is not okay.
08:33The military guard that patrols the area rolls right on by like it's nothing.
08:39We took a quick look at him and realized he needed a thorough exam.
08:44Starting to lose my vision.
08:45Starting to lose your vision?
08:46Well, let's sit down before you have to sit down.
08:52Was it okay that we help you, Robert?
08:55Yeah.
08:55Cool.
08:56Great.
08:56We'll get your hand fixed up.
08:57That's no problem.
08:59Does anything else hurt?
09:00It's my shoulder.
09:01Your shoulder hurts?
09:02Yeah.
09:02Okay.
09:03Oh, man.
09:04Okay.
09:04What is that?
09:05Yeah.
09:06Oh, it looks like you might have dislocated a shoulder.
09:09Is that a dislocation?
09:10Yeah.
09:10Perhaps.
09:14Robert, what I do know now is that you're not going to ride out of here.
09:18We're going to get you a ride to San Ignacio, okay?
09:22Okay.
09:22Okay.
09:23And so let's get a couple guys working on stashing the bike.
09:26Okay.
09:27So it's not going to be in jeopardy.
09:29Is bike rideable?
09:29No.
09:30The clutch is gone.
09:31All right.
09:32We're going to just...
09:32Jeff and I fell into a routine learned from the repeated practice during a Wilderness
09:36First Responder class.
09:37I'm going to hand you off to somebody else.
09:39We can give them a full report.
09:41Sound good?
09:41Yeah.
09:42Is there a position for your arm that makes it feel better?
09:44For some reason, if it doesn't hurt at all, it just doesn't work.
09:48It just doesn't work.
09:51Is there anybody that we should get a hold of for you?
09:54Yeah, I have three friends back.
09:56Is that an issue?
09:57Okay.
09:58So initial sweep, no further blood anywhere else.
10:00Okay.
10:00Great.
10:01So I think we just need to look at his shoulder and work on cleaning his hand up.
10:06Yep.
10:07Would you like to sit in the chair?
10:09Sure.
10:09Or is this good here?
10:10I'd like to sit in the chair.
10:11Okay.
10:11Here you go.
10:12Our patient's name is Robert, and he's from Alaska, which perked my interest because I knew I had a friend
10:18from Alaska that was just recently in Belize.
10:20What part of Alaska?
10:22Anchorage.
10:22Anchorage.
10:23Yeah.
10:24Are you with Brandon Hoffelberg?
10:27Yes, I am.
10:28Get out.
10:29Yeah.
10:29That's who I'm with.
10:30We can't believe that by happenstance we've come across a friend of a friend in need in the middle of
10:35nowhere.
10:35Oh, he mentioned an excursion going on.
10:38That's us.
10:39That's us.
10:41It's amazing sometimes how small this world can be.
10:45I appreciate the help.
10:47Oh, yeah, absolutely.
10:48We're glad we're here to help you.
10:49These are the guys that have been giving us intel on where to dive in Belize.
10:54Wow.
10:54Small world.
10:55Yeah.
10:55The world just got smaller all of a sudden.
10:57Nice.
11:00That'll help.
11:02They're going to take the pick off the town and help Robert out and get him to a hospital.
11:06It just so happens that he is down here with a guy that Clay has been in touch with who
11:11was a childhood friend of Clay's.
11:13It's an amazing opportunity that we ended up happening to be here at the same time as he took a
11:19sweet little digger right here on the road.
11:21Crazy coincidence.
11:22Crazy coincidence.
11:23So as they head into town, we're going to press on forward to our final destination, find some camping,
11:28and hopefully they can meet up with us later tonight, or if all else fails, they'll come in in the
11:33morning.
11:34We softened the suspension to Cadillac status.
11:37Oh, wow.
11:38We'll see how that works out.
11:40We plotted the hospital and started making our way down the mountain.
11:44Eventually, we got some spotty service, and I tried to reach my friend Brandon.
11:49You can reach me at my number.
11:51Round the roundabout, and then roll on in there.
11:54Okay.
11:55But it does look like it's that.
11:56Nope, sorry.
11:58It's this building to our left right over here.
11:59Finally, Brandon and I connected on the phone.
12:02Dude, I was blowing our mind too.
12:06But we got your buddy here.
12:09We have questioned that it might just be dislocated, so we're going to look at resetting it here.
12:16So we're going to just take a look at that right now.
12:18The hospital that we just arrived at is open.
12:20It's open.
12:21They don't have a doctor here.
12:22We decided to try and have Robert reset his shoulder.
12:25The sooner the better on this type of injury.
12:27We'll hang straight down, and we're going to wrap some weight around your wrist.
12:30What that's going to do is pull traction.
12:33And then, because right now your ball in the socket there is not lined up properly.
12:39So that's going to get things to line up.
12:41And then your muscles are strong enough they're going to suck it back in.
12:44So we don't need a ton of weight there.
12:46It's just enough.
12:46If it's not successful, we will have to find another hospital.
12:50That's the goal.
12:51Hello.
12:52Hello, amigo.
12:53Hello, buddy.
12:57Fancy seeing you here.
13:03This isn't the first time Brandon and I have run into each other in really weird places.
13:07We attempted the shoulder hang for about 45 minutes, plenty long.
13:12And in the meantime, we learned of another doctor in the area.
13:15So we gather our things to go find him.
13:24All right.
13:26I'll walk in in situations where you guys reassess.
13:30With x-rays in hand, Robert learns that his clavicle is dislocated and will need surgery
13:35in the United States to have it fixed.
13:38It's a bummer deal, but he's positive, and he understands that these things just happen.
13:44At least you know.
13:46Yeah.
13:49He actually flies out on Saturday.
13:53So, according to the doctors right now, this is not going to get worse.
13:57Right.
13:57It's not an emergency at this point in time.
14:00Okay.
14:01And he's even thinking, yeah, we'll go out to Key Cocker for a day or two.
14:04All right.
14:06I'm in shock.
14:07I can't believe it.
14:08Yeah.
14:10Yeah.
14:11Yeah.
14:12The next morning, Jeff, Kurt, and I meet up again with the crew to make our way back
14:17to the 1,000-foot waterfall.
14:19A very beautiful spot.
14:32There we had a camera incident that took the focus away from nature and put it towards
14:37a retrieval.
14:40So, we just got finished with the valiant effort, and Jeff crawled down there and got
14:46a pretty good slip.
14:47Sting.
14:49The rocks are very loose, and a sharp rock had caught his leg just right, cutting his
14:55flesh, but not his pants.
14:59This cut is going to take a while to heal in the humidity of Central America.
15:05We are almost out of the woods when Kyle makes a big mistake.
15:09Kyle has something he needs to share with the group.
15:15It's important that the band of brothers like this to be accountable.
15:20Uh-oh.
15:21I'm tearing up already.
15:21But, um, just moments earlier, you heard me.
15:279.05.
15:27Just humming away.
15:30And Ty goes,
15:31YOOP!
15:3222 hours into a 24-hour Taylor Swift band, Kyle shamefully resets the clock.
15:37Oh, no!
15:38She broke you!
15:40She broke me!
15:41She gets to everyone!
15:4322 hours!
15:43We were 22 hours!
15:4422 hours!
15:45Tater sniffers!
15:46Tater sniff!
15:48Oh!
15:48It wasn't in our wildest dreams that we couldn't make it 24 hours without Taylor.
15:53I mean, this love for Taylor is good.
15:55This love is bad.
15:57And we need to let it go free.
15:59So we decided to shake it off, and clean up any bad blood.
16:03After all, we need to roll in style.
16:05You're a nightmare, Destin.
16:06You're a dream.
16:07We're happy!
16:10Being a bit behind, we rallied back down the mountain, picked up Brandon and our other newfound
16:15friends, and made a quick push to Belize City.
16:24We made record time to Belize City, and made our boat taxi within minutes of its departure.
16:30Our destination is the small island of Key Kalker, a favorite spot of Brandon's crew, and we hope to find
16:36some cool culture and some diving.
16:41We soon landed in paradise.
16:43Saw the lights coming up.
16:45It just looks so beautiful.
16:46The temperature is perfect.
16:48Ty was asking him if there are any good beaches on the island.
16:51He said there's not, because the hurricane in 1961 came in and washed a lot of the sand out.
16:56So, that's why there are no beaches on the island.
17:02Food was a must, so we asked for the best place on the island.
17:05Man, he's the best chef on the island.
17:08The best chef on the island.
17:10Yeah, I guarantee.
17:13A local place grown from passion in a three-table sitting room, to now one of the busiest restaurants.
17:18Scott and I were just talking to the chef.
17:20We went over, because I saw the octopus on the grill, and we decided to change our order from shrimp
17:25kebab.
17:25We're gonna go half and half.
17:26We gotta try it.
17:27Yeah.
17:27You gotta do it.
17:28We're here.
17:29It's fresh from the ocean.
17:31You have to try the octopus.
17:32And it's freaky.
17:33So we had to do it.
17:33A relaxed and chill night on the island was just what we needed, after a hectic and somewhat stressful last
17:38few days.
17:40And all of us were looking forward to tomorrow.
17:47Yeah, our last dive did not go so well.
17:48I hope my dive partner doesn't about die today.
17:53So now we're hoping to have a phenomenal dive here.
17:56The reef here is the second largest reef in the world, second only to the Great Barrier Reef in Australia.
18:02And I'm excited to get back in the water and have a better day.
18:05Are you ready, Brendan?
18:07Oh, I'm so ready.
18:08Go do some diving with my buddy, Clay.
18:12Here we go.
18:13About to head out on a dive adventure at Key Calker in Belize.
18:17We're gonna go see if we can't have a nice leisurely hour long bottom time dive on the second largest
18:23reef in the world.
18:24Kurt and Clay took off and went scuba diving this morning, so the rest of us are gonna go snorkeling
18:30right here close to the island at a place called Split.
18:34And it happened at the big last hurricane in the 60s here.
18:37And it caused a big split in the island here.
18:40And it's kind of like a river that goes through.
18:41It's really beautiful.
19:02What a cool place to say you have snorkeled.
19:05At an island split in two by a hurricane.
19:12Toby and Jeff had other things on the agenda for the day, though.
19:15To continue to find Jeff a wife.
19:17We are all married, except for Jeff.
19:20Oh, come on.
19:21Which is great, because at the beach, there are a lot of girls.
19:25And it's bikini season here.
19:27They do a special thing here where you can rent a puppy for free and walk them down the street.
19:31So, we are gonna find Jeff a little dog to walk down the beach.
19:35I can't wait.
19:36I just, I can't wait.
19:42This one is E.T.
19:44E.T. phone home.
19:48What's his name?
19:49Toby.
19:51Oh, it's your name.
19:53This is the dog we're taking.
19:54How do you feel about that?
19:55We're taking Toby.
19:56Actually, my mom had a stuffed animal dog named Toby.
19:59That's why she named me Toby, which is kind of awkward.
20:02Yeah, real weird.
20:03Oh, cool.
20:05I don't think the plan worked out all that well.
20:09It seems that all the girls just needed some directions.
20:11And a nap.
20:12Because they all just seemed to disappear.
20:26Now above the reef, it was time for Brandon, Kurt and I to take the plunge and explore the world
20:31below.
20:31We don't want to grab, hold on, step or collect anything.
20:34The only thing we'll collect if we find is a lionfish.
20:36We were able to take our time on this dive, making sure everything is perfect.
20:4330 feet into our descent, it became apparent that this was a diver's paradise.
20:50We found ourselves immersed in a new universe, a world swarming with life.
20:55So we found ourselves in a new universe, with that it was a life.
21:04It was an image of a world.
21:06There are so many people that were hard to find.
21:08We found ourselves in a movie.
21:14There are so many people that were designed to disappear.
21:15If you found ourselves in a new universe, a world of comfort for us.
21:17There are so many people that were just wandering around to us.
21:19And there are so many people who were looking for us, where we were looking for?
21:23It was
21:25Oh, baby.
21:55This kind of water is what captivates us as divers and fuels our pursuit of the unknown below.
22:12Back on the island, the locals are preparing the day's catch.
22:16We meet up with the rest of the crew at Fran's single-hut kitchen.
22:20Fran is a jolly old gal and took a special interest in Kurt.
22:24I like the married ones.
22:27I only get them for a little while and then I send them back home.
22:33Well, Kurt, what do you think about that?
22:36My dinner is definitely free.
22:39We catch up on the day's events as we sit and have tropical coconut shrimp.
22:44The stories of journeys past start to come out of the woodwork.
22:47Brandon has a good one of an accident in Thailand.
22:51And it's like sweltering hot in this freaking van.
22:55So I'm like, I go to open the window on the van and it's zip-tied shut.
23:00I always carry my Benchmade with me.
23:02I pull it out and I'm going to cut the zip-tie.
23:05I'm cutting on it and it just popped.
23:08Does Matt, I think I cut myself.
23:11I was like, is it bad?
23:14Pretty bad.
23:16It's pretty bad.
23:17To your shoulders recovery.
23:19To the rest of your trip.
23:21And thanks for joining us for a little while.
23:24Cheers.
23:24Cheers.
23:26See you later.
23:27Yeah.
23:28I like the style.
23:29I'm serious.
23:30I don't say goodbye.
23:31I say I'll see you later.
23:35I won't wash this cheek.
23:36That was so sweet.
23:37I won't wash it.
23:38See?
23:39Our time in Key Kalker was truly special.
23:42I really appreciate it.
23:44I don't know what would have happened if you guys hadn't helped out.
23:48I'm just really grateful.
23:51Good luck with your shoulder.
23:53Pleasure.
23:54Yeah.
23:58We had a great experience through finding a different culture and forming new friendships.
24:03Our goodbyes signify another milestone of the trip.
24:06Last night in Central America.
24:09Heading home tomorrow morning.
24:12It's crazy.
24:13It went by fast.
24:14And kind of went by slow in some ways as well.
24:17Ty leaves a big hole in the team.
24:19He will be missed greatly.
24:27It's the last time I get to see Belize in Central America, at least for a long time.
24:32And I'm excited.
24:34I'm really excited to get back home.
24:35It's bittersweet in a lot of ways, but more than anything I'm ready to get back to my family.
24:42It's been good.
24:45Love you guys.
24:46I love you too, man.
24:52This morning, Ty left on an airplane.
24:56And just now, just 10 minutes ago, new guys came in, the Team 5 guys.
25:01And our new cast member, Steve Talaki, is getting off as well.
25:07With one goodbye, we have a hello, to dive into Guatemala.
25:12We have a mission, and we're about to be submersed into the biggest adventure to date,
25:17as we travel into a remote village of Guatemala with our Special Forces friends of Team 5.
25:23We have no idea what we're in for, but that's what makes the unknown what it is.
25:48We have a mission, and we're about to get back to the populations.
