00:00Expedition Overland's Pan American Series is presented by General Tire. Anywhere is possible.
00:50We are in El Salvador and a couple of days of rest after a big week with Team 5 is
00:55what
00:56we need. So we find a beach to make camp. While leveling the rigs and setting up camp, our
01:12mood shifts when we are informed of some unfortunate news.
01:16The guy behind me here, they came up asking. They had two people lost at sea. They found
01:22one that died. They haven't found the other person yet. So these locals came. One of
01:27them speaking broken English asked if we would help them find their other person that is lost
01:33at sea or somewhere here. So they just don't have any equipment here to do any of that stuff.
01:40So they're asking for help.
01:42Absolutely.
01:42We are going to thank you.
01:45And a boy.
01:47And how many years did the 15 year old boy?
01:51Off them.
01:53Pulled them near.
01:54To the sea. So they got lost. And anybody knows anything about them. So one person did a pearl
02:02this morning. Take care of them. Thank you very much. See ya.
02:07Apparently there were two kids out playing. Two teenagers out playing on the beach. Just
02:13a little bit into the tide, into the water. And they went missing yesterday afternoon.
02:18They found one of them this morning deceased on the beach about 5 or 6 kilometers south
02:24of here. So they've asked us to keep our eyes open. Probably go for a little walk. And
02:30just want to be very in tune to that. The family is actually staying here right now. So we're
02:37going to provide what we can and hope for the best.
02:41Many of us have kids. And this hits home.
02:49Just as we sat down, the owner of the beach comes over to welcome us. Turns out, he's a
02:54real treat.
02:57And you're all single guys?
02:59No. We're all married.
03:01Are they here?
03:02Married minus this guy.
03:03Sex is legal in this country. And you could drive into San Miguel and for 30 to 40 dollars
03:09spend a half hour in a room with a gorgeous young 18 or 19 year old girl. We're on camera,
03:17but yes, I've done it over a hundred times. It's a wonderful thing and you'd be helping
03:21out girls that are very desperate and like to play. So, that's an option.
03:28Well, that's certainly not an option. And more than likely, he's more than just a John.
03:33John's also pretty knowledgeable about some other questionable things.
03:36He finally came to us and they said, we want you to pay.
03:39And I said, who's there? Like MS-13 or Los Berrios?
03:42Whoever has control of this area.
03:44Whoever's running the zone.
03:45And it's all about the cocaine highway. And as you remember when you were young, you know,
03:50the cocaine used to get flown right from out of Colombia, right into Mexico.
03:55Right. And then across the border.
03:57Covered airstrips all over Mexico.
03:58Right. Well, now they don't do that anymore.
04:00They shut all those airstrips down.
04:01Right. They shut all those airstrips down. And you know where they are?
04:05They're in Honduras.
04:07They're in Honduras. They're right over the border there.
04:09So, that's why there's crime in here in Guatemala and Mexico.
04:11Because you're talking about the largest industry in the world, $150 billion,
04:15non-taxable income, the cocaine industry.
04:18So, they came here and they said they wanted us to pay.
04:21And I said, well, how much is the fish cooperative paying?
04:23And the fish cooperative is paying $75 a month.
04:26So, I said, well, I'll give you $100 a month.
04:28So, they said, great.
04:30The only thing is we kind of don't do monthly payments anymore.
04:32We do one lump sum.
04:34And I said, well, that's just never happening.
04:35So, they said, but look, we're really trying to raise money.
04:38So, if you give us $500, we'll give you seven months.
04:42We'll give you two months free for an advanced payment.
04:44And I go, I like these guys.
04:45But what does that mean?
04:46You know, what that means is if any punk is walking down the street
04:52and they think they're going to come over here and mess with you guys,
04:56you know, we're not going to call the police.
04:59We're going to call the bad boys.
05:01And they're not going to come asking questions.
05:03And there are no secrets in this valley.
05:06Everybody grows up to marry the girl next door.
05:09So, we will find you and you will be sorry.
05:12But I think it's great.
05:14You know, at first I was really against it and, you know,
05:16putting out fire with gasoline and doing the right thing and all that.
05:19But, you know, in hindsight, I think it's very cool.
05:23And they provide a service because, you know, the police really don't work here.
05:27The police come up to me trying to sell me turtle eggs.
05:29I go, guys, you're supposed to be the people arresting the people with turtle eggs.
05:33We go, yeah, we did arrest them and now we're going to sell them to you.
05:35I mean, oh.
05:39The good thing about this guy is that he doesn't live in our country
05:42anymore.
05:44While John talked our ear off, we had another fellow land in our camp.
05:55We don't know what he's on.
05:58It doesn't take a genius to know you should not hang around in these environments.
06:02What do you do?
06:04Just a pretty heavy feeling around this place right now.
06:07So I think it's best for us to move on.
06:09We're no help here.
06:12We got other things to do and more places to see on our trip.
06:15So we're glad to get moving.
06:18El Salvador is a beautiful place.
06:20I mean, the beach is beautiful, but the whole country just seems to have a weird vibe to
06:28it.
06:29And I think all of us between being exhausted and just landing in an area where we have the
06:37owner of this place is talking about sleeping with women for money and how it's a good thing
06:42to sleep with women for money because they need the money.
06:46Where Clay and I are coming from the standpoint of our wives are racing over in Morocco right
06:53as we speak fighting to get rid of that stuff.
07:00He's what's wrong with the world.
07:03Knowing that what my wife and what Rhonda stand for, the one in four on sexual abuse and
07:10all that stuff, I could have just punched that guy in the face because of the stand that
07:15he took on his justification, his simple justification of what they're in need and you can help them
07:22out by doing this.
07:23So selfish.
07:24It's so wrong backwards.
07:28Just decided that we're not resting here because we're not getting any rest.
07:33We're going to move on through El Salvador, get through Honduras, which is just a quick
07:3950-mile push, and then get into Nicaragua.
07:42So we're going to find some rest in Nicaragua at this point in time.
07:49Two borders stand between us and a couple days of rest.
07:53We are ready to pull out all the stops to make it happen.
07:58This time we've got a fixer, and we met him at the gas station.
08:01He was a real cool guy.
08:03Kind of take those guys with a grain of salt, but this time seems like a real positive thing.
08:07So we're going for it.
08:09We're going to give it a try, which hopefully will greatly expedite this process.
08:14It might be worth it.
08:15It may not be.
08:17He is my friend.
08:18Ronnie?
08:19Yeah.
08:20He's living here.
08:21I work in the bank.
08:22Hold on.
08:22We need the sign.
08:23This paper for...
08:25Get him.
08:26That's Kyle's.
08:27Right here.
08:28Kyle.
08:29This is great.
08:30I don't want to get too excited yet because we might get held up later on in the line here,
08:36but we're moving fast through this.
08:38It's awesome.
08:39You'll be surprised from what a few cigarettes, a lighter, some gum, and playing cards can
08:44get you in places like this.
08:47Honduras is the starting point of what is called the cocaine highway.
08:53And cocaine has actually flown in on remote airstrips into Honduras, and then it's eventually
09:01smuggled up into Mexico where it finds its way into the cartels.
09:06Some of our other sources also tell us that to be really careful that there's heightened
09:13activity in the area.
09:15So we are just trying to be a fast mover and get through this area as fast as possible.
09:21After traveling a longer distance than normal within a no man's land, we come up to the
09:27Honduran border.
09:27It's Julie.
09:29Who is that guy?
09:33Jeffrey.
09:34Yes, sir.
09:35And I don't need it.
09:36Mm-hmm.
09:37Mm-hmm.
09:39Licencia titulo.
09:40You guys all come here.
09:41Okay, park up here.
09:44Hey, Creepy.
09:45See you later, Creepy.
09:46Hey, one dollar.
09:47Give me one dollar.
09:48Nope.
09:49Nope.
09:49Can you guys all come making your way, guys?
09:50That's creepy.
09:51That is really creepy.
09:53A bunch of kids wanting money.
09:53That is proper.
09:54Welcome to Honduras.
09:56It's a lovely place.
09:57You guys all come making your way, guys.
09:57Here we go.
09:59It's amazing how you can just go across a line and experience a totally different place.
10:05I can't wait to get through this side of the border.
10:08This place is a little weird.
10:11It's kind of voodoo-ish.
10:13We're going through the immigration process, jumping through hoops.
10:16We're out of El Salvador, and we're in step one of getting into Honduras.
10:20We've got to do our visas to get in here for our persons, then we've got to get the vehicles
10:25in here, then we've got to get fumigated, and then we're on our way.
10:28So we've got a couple helpers that we enlisted because they are quite helpful.
10:32It's worth it to pay them five bucks each because they're standing in line for us
10:35and holding our hands to each of the checkpoints.
10:37So it just makes the process faster, so things are going good.
10:40Our fixer had a helper waiting in line, allowing us to get in and take his place.
10:45It expedited our border time exponentially.
10:52Crazy.
10:54So tons of people are traveling right now, and with already talking to Ronnie earlier,
10:58he said that this is a pretty big border for the cocaine smuggling across,
11:02so that's also why we have to keep our heads on straight and just makes it more of an interesting
11:07border to cross.
11:10If anyone ever tells you that borders aren't stressful, they're lying to you.
11:15Yeah, sure, it's all a big game, but it's a stressful one.
11:18So I was just walking back from over there, Collin and I, and a guy brushed up against my side,
11:24but I had my hand down by my front pocket, and he was trying to go in my pocket.
11:29I mean, he was trying to pickpocket me, so I just brushed him off and just kept walking and didn't
11:34stop.
11:35Your face was like, what?
11:37They're good.
11:37Oh well, it's gonna happen.
11:38They're good.
11:38You just gotta be prepared for it.
11:40We gotta keep our hands in our pockets like all the time.
11:42Let's see if you catch the pickpocket this time.
11:49I just got yelled at for having a camera in the border.
11:53I didn't see like 10 guards yelling at me.
11:57So now I'm gonna start with this little camera and do it anyways.
12:02Alright guys, so it is 11.35.
12:05We've got 25 minutes to get through this whole process.
12:08Or we spend another hour here watching them eat lunch and then finish.
12:11So let's just be hasty about it.
12:13Make sure we're making all the right moves and ready to go with these guys.
12:16Give us the thumbs up and we'll get through this important problem.
12:19No fumigation.
12:20Okay, they're coming up here.
12:22You don't want to spend any more time than necessary in a no man's land.
12:26If something goes down while in this zone, you're literally in the middle of nowhere.
12:31Yeah, the guard didn't like our camera at all.
12:34So he said, I will hold you up for a long time unless you something.
12:42Really?
12:43Outside, we sort out the deal with our fixer.
12:48It's the classic negotiation that starts out at 100 bucks and lands at 15.
12:53I saw the line.
12:54It was a big line.
12:54I agree.
12:55I'm not denying it was a big line.
12:57What do you feel?
12:58Yeah, that's fine.
12:58All right.
12:59Still in the middle.
13:00Okay.
13:01All right.
13:02Good work, everybody.
13:03That was just about two hours and 20 minutes to cross two international borders.
13:09In a border that we expected to take three hours minimum.
13:12So we already got a little equity there.
13:14We learned a valuable lesson that some of these helpers can be actual good help too.
13:19So that cost us 15 bucks for them.
13:22So I think it was money well spent.
13:24I'll tell you what, I didn't want to spend another hour waiting in line.
13:27So to me, it was worth it.
13:28And, oh, FJ45 on the right.
13:30Gotta love it.
13:31Over.
13:35As we move through this short section of Honduras, the girls of Expedition Overland are across
13:40the world in Northern Africa, in the beautiful country of Morocco.
13:54We just got off the plane.
13:57We're in Morocco.
14:01Rhonda and Rochelle are preparing to start the event known as the Rally Asia Day Gazelles.
14:05This is their second time competing together, and they are here to win.
14:15So we're in Rabat, Morocco, at the official ceremonial start of the 25th Annual Rally Asia Day Gazelles.
14:22And it's freezing.
14:24The Rally Asia Day Gazelles is an all-women off-road rally.
14:28It's the hardest, longest, all-female rally in the world.
14:31And it's by dead reckoning navigation only, which means you only have a map and a compass.
14:36No GPS, no electronics of any kind.
14:38You actually have to turn those in at the beginning of the rally.
14:41So there's six-day checkpoints a day over a period of nine days.
14:44And we work our way west through Morocco.
14:46It's a really cool way to see the country.
14:49And we end up in Esauera, where we get to parade on the beach at the end.
14:54It's really cool.
14:55Awesome event.
14:57Yeah.
14:58Because he's not French.
15:01When Rochelle gets interviewed by a French cameraman, she speaks caveman.
15:05It's so funny.
15:06I think I have to speak caveman.
15:07She's like, we go to the places, and we get these checkpoints.
15:13At the ceremonial start, the girls meet up with many of the American teams,
15:17including Team Hoenn, friends made during last year's competition.
15:21Wanna say hey?
15:23Hey!
15:23Hi!
15:24How you doing?
15:25Good!
15:26Ready to get this party started?
15:27Yeah!
15:28The party started.
15:29USA!
15:30USA!
15:31USA!
15:32The environment is one of the bigger challenges in this rally,
15:35and it doesn't wait long to start dishing it out.
15:38We are climbing to the top of the Atlas Mountains,
15:40which is what we have to go through to get to the other side, to our food.
15:46Welcome to Africa!
15:49And we have this little Renault Kangoo van that probably only has two-wheel drive.
15:56They can barely make it up, and we're stuck behind them for a long, long ways.
16:02Shelly, how do you feel about this?
16:04I am not choosing Joy right now.
16:06She's not choosing Joy, and so I'll choose it for us.
16:15Stop stopping!
16:17My driver's getting angry.
16:19Agh!
16:27Hey ladies!
16:28What's going on?
16:29Now we're in Africa!
16:31Oh my god, don't!
16:33Okay, get in the traffic!
16:37So, I left Montana to go to the desert for some warm weather.
16:43This is what we're driving through right now.
16:46It's not weird.
16:46The rally has several categories.
16:48Quads and bikes, crossovers, and four-wheel drives.
16:52The XLs are competing in the four-wheel drive category.
16:56For the next nine days, the girls will be looking to drive the straightest lines possible between checkpoint flags hidden
17:03in the Sahara.
17:06This is a rally around precision, not speed.
17:11The fewer kilometers traveled over the course of the rally, the higher the ranking.
17:15All maps of rally.
17:17Okay.
17:18And road book of prologue.
17:20Okay.
17:21Merci.
17:24Au revoir!
17:26You win this rally through perfect execution of map reading, holding a heading, and driving the straightest line possible.
17:33A perfect balance between driver and navigator.
17:40Oh, and don't break down or get lost, because you'll be removed from the rankings when you call for assistance.
17:46I like to hike this with Rhonda, so I can get a visual of what I'm about to drive.
17:51All day.
17:54Wow.
17:54I got a shave.
17:58Get ready.
17:58It's going to be a long day.
18:00Yeah.
18:00Okay.
18:00So here's where we are.
18:02Okay.
18:05And we have to get here.
18:07So we're going on the left side of that peak?
18:10No.
18:13The right, the other side of that big peak, right here?
18:17Yeah.
18:18Other side of it.
18:18The right.
18:19Oh, got it.
18:20How's the seating?
18:21Okay.
18:44Rochelle is showing good confidence in her driving, and here she demonstrates the perfect
18:49way to crest a dune.
18:50Keeping enough momentum to get to the top without getting high-centered.
19:05The girls are performing really well.
19:07Their previous experience in the rally is paying off.
19:10Because they were saying you did get hopelessly lost, like one year?
19:13Last year.
19:14Was that last year?
19:16Yeah.
19:16Day three.
19:17Really bad.
19:18So is that like...
19:19We're actually going to be tackling that beast today, those mountains.
19:24I'm a new person that's here because they actually know how to navigate.
19:29Once you get lost that bad, you learn the skills to not do that again.
19:35Never ever do it again.
19:35It was super scary.
19:37We thought we were going to sleep out in these mountains with no one around us and a bunch
19:40of nomadic people that would...
19:41They like to like, you know, crowd around.
19:45It just wouldn't have worked.
19:47So...
19:49See?
19:49She's allergic to the helmet.
19:51Yeah.
19:51Can I poke it?
19:52Don't poke it.
19:53I know it's a point.
19:54Looks like you've got like, thought fly or something.
20:05We've got eight checkpoints to do today.
20:08We're on a marathon leg.
20:09The oil light kept coming on, so I checked it and found out I had almost no oil in the
20:13truck, so filled her up with oil, put some fuel treatment in there, bandaged my face, and here we are.
20:23New challenges lay before them.
20:26Their good fortune, though, appears to be dipping south.
20:30Up, up, up, up, up, up, up, up!
20:32Oh.
20:41We're only in the middle of nowhere in the desert, and you get backed into.
20:4820...almost exactly the same distance we just did.
20:51Okay.
20:52It's looking a little more aggressive.
21:09We were just driving, and then we heard the thong, and it wasn't as aggressive as the first time we
21:14heard that sound, but then we looked under here, and the coils snapped.
21:19This checkpoint really sucked.
21:21I hated this checkpoint.
21:23I hated it, too.
21:24It was terrible.
21:25I'm just going to keep driving careful on it, and see what the mechanics say when I get back.
21:31So, I honestly don't know what I'm going to do.
21:38If the coil fails completely, and they need to call for assistance, the girls will be disqualified.
21:50Five more days and hundreds of kilometers of unforgiving terrain still await.
22:12We have met a gentleman named Marvin, so we're going to see what he can do to help us out
22:18here.
22:20Our new fixer, recommended to us by our last guy, isn't proving to be so effective.
22:25In fact, he's more or less a nuisance.
22:27Sharp boys, and keep your eyes on all our goodies here.
22:30Roll up windows.
22:33Passport.
22:33Like a moment.
22:34I'll punch your throat.
22:37Seriously.
22:38I don't know why they're in the middle of it.
22:43And now, we'll get this photocopy, bring it back, hand off a copy, then go take our papers,
22:50and that proves that we checked our vehicles out of Honduras, and then we go down and register
22:54back into Nicaragua.
22:57So, last border took us 2 hours and 15 minutes.
23:01We'll see how long this one takes us.
23:03So, he's not sure if it's because he was in Africa or not,
23:06but we need our yellow paper shots, vaccinations,
23:09and I wasn't told to get them.
23:12So, I have typhoid, tetanus, hepatitis A and Z.
23:17So, what I'm going to do is I'm going to borrow,
23:21I got Scott's paper, because it doesn't have a name on it.
23:25No identifying name on it.
23:27So, I'm now current on shots I've never even got.
23:32It's the first time we've had to provide a medical document
23:35to get out of a country.
23:37Just handing in our yellow fever.
23:40Some of us have them.
23:43Some of us don't.
23:47So, I just, we'll see.
23:51So, I just borrowed Scott's extra copy,
23:54which didn't have his name on it,
23:55and the guy didn't notice.
23:57So, we'll see if Scott gets through with the same paper.
24:03Toby, you got in with a copy,
24:05and then he flagged me on a copy and wanted the original.
24:09On the same piece of paper.
24:11On the same piece of paper.
24:12So, you got lucky.
24:16That's how you do it, man.
24:17You just got to, I don't know if lie is the word.
24:22Yeah, it is.
24:23That's the word.
24:24I think I threw a wrench in the system,
24:26because everybody else gave him a copy,
24:28and then all of a sudden I threw in my original,
24:31because I didn't have a copy.
24:32Yeah, and then he probably said,
24:33Hey, wait a minute.
24:34These aren't originals.
24:36These aren't originals.
24:36Go get your original.
24:37Yeah.
24:38So, I think it's because I had my original,
24:40and threw a wrench in the system.
24:41So, well, I had the original, and it worked.
24:43That's awesome.
24:45And now if I yell a fever,
24:47because I'm not Scott.
24:50A problem none of us have planned for,
24:52comes in from left field.
24:54A new fumigation technique comes into play.
25:00You must have got out of the paper.
25:02Oh, are you spraying inside?
25:03Yeah.
25:04Um, new.
25:07Brand new.
25:08Yeah.
25:09I do everything short of baked,
25:10to be omitted as our vehicles are brand new.
25:12Brand new.
25:132015 Toyota.
25:15Don't, don't, don't spray that in my car.
25:19No, senor.
25:20Please.
25:20Have to.
25:22This, okay.
25:23With a patch and a sticker,
25:25I'm able to get the gentleman to reduce the amount
25:27he sprays in the brakes.
25:28It's better than nothing.
25:30See.
25:30You got it?
25:31Okay.
25:41At least it's better than the full dose others are getting.
25:46You can taste it.
25:48You can taste it.
25:49That's like a year off your life right there.
25:51I don't need to, you gotta get in the car.
25:53I just went and tried to sit in the car and it about,
25:55I about fell over.
25:57Yeah.
25:58Just as we think we are in the clear,
26:00It all goes wrong.
