00:05DAY 6 THE COMPASSION OF THE SUFFERING SERVANT
00:09In the Gospel of Mark, a pivotal moment occurs in chapter 8 when Peter accurately discerns
00:15that Jesus is the Christ. From that point on, Jesus began to speak clearly about his mission.
00:21He did not come to be a conquering political king, but a suffering servant who came to die
00:27for our sins. This is the ultimate definition of love. As John 3 verse 16 tells us, God so loved
00:36the world that he gave his only Son so that we might be reconciled to him. Throughout his ministry,
00:42whenever Jesus moved to heal or perform a miracle, Scripture says he was moved with compassion.
00:49Biblical love is inextricably wrapped in compassion. Compassion is more than a feeling,
00:55It is the inward yearning of pity or sorrow for another's suffering that drives one to action.
01:01It is a central characteristic of God and, therefore, must be the hallmark of the Christian life.
01:08To love with compassion means seeking the highest good of others, even when they do not return
01:13that love. It means having the grace to look at those trapped in blindness or contrary ideologies,
01:19those who may even feel like enemies of our values, and feeling pity for their state rather than
01:26looking down on them. Like Daniel in Babylon, we may find ourselves in environments that do not
01:32reflect our kingdom values. In those moments, compassion drives us to intercede rather than
01:38condemn. It is easy to speak of this love theoretically, but it is hard to live it out when we
01:45are personally
01:45hurt or when the world feels increasingly dark. This is why we must constantly return to the cross.
01:52Jesus set his face toward Jerusalem, enduring the ultimate sacrifice because he was focused on a
01:59higher good, our redemption. As image-bearers, we are called to share this same love with a world
02:05that may never offer anything in return. We are called to be high in discernment while remaining deep
02:12in compassion for those who are often like puppets in the hands of the enemy. We do not know their
02:18final state, but while we interact with them here, we seek to reflect the mind of Christ,
02:24laying down our pride and anger to pick up the love of God. Reflection
02:28When you encounter people who oppose your faith or live in a way that contradicts the truth,
02:34is your first reaction anger or compassion? How can the higher good of their salvation change the way
02:41you respond to personal hurt? Prayer. Father, your love is deeper and greater than we can ever fully
02:48grasp. If we try to love based on our own strength, we will always fall short. We lean into your
02:55eternal
02:56word to understand how to accurately reflect you. Help us to see the bigger picture and to have deep
03:02compassion for a world that does not yet look like your kingdom. Grant us the grace to speak your truth
03:09with wisdom, reflecting your heart and not our own pride. In Jesus' name, Amen.
