00:02Rescuers began an operation on Thursday to save a humpback whale lying in shallow water
00:06near the eastern German town of Wiesmar on the Baltic Sea.
00:11The animal, which has been nicknamed Timmy, is sick and has barely moved for days.
00:16Many worry the animal may die soon.
00:18It is unclear why it swam into the Baltic Sea in the first place,
00:22which is so far away from its natural habitat.
00:25Some experts believe the animal might have lost its way
00:28while swimming after a shoal of herring or during migration.
00:32To get back to its natural habitat,
00:34the whale would have to travel back into the North Sea and then to the Atlantic Ocean.
00:40Previous rescue attempts temporarily freed the whale,
00:43but the animal never found its way back to the North Sea.
