00:03On April 14, 1983, a headless body was found in a topless bar.
00:09Here's what happened.
00:10A few hours earlier, 23-year-old Charles Dingle had been at the topless bar Herbie's, drinking and using cocaine.
00:17For reasons unexplained, Dingle then drew a gun and shot the bar owner, Herbie Cummings, in the head, killing him
00:22instantly.
00:23For four hours, Charles terrorized the female dancers inside.
00:27At some point, Dingle ordered one of the women to remove his bullets from the dead man's head, which she
00:32was unfortunately unable to do by hand, compelling Dingle to insist she remove the head completely with a steak knife.
00:41He placed Herbie's head in a box and wrapped it with decorations he found under the bar, then ran outside
00:47and stole a cab, taking two hostages and the gift-wrapped head with him.
00:51Hours later, he parked the car to take a breather and summarily fell asleep, allowing his hostages to quietly flee
00:57the scene and contact the police.
01:00The groggy Dingle was apprehended by police the next morning and separated from the severed head, which was used as
01:05evidence to quickly convict and sentence him to life in jail.
01:08And this is where he remains today, still claiming his innocence.
01:11Hours later, please.
