00:00A 31-year-old man has been sentenced to eight years in prison
00:03and one stroke of the cane after pleading guilty
00:06to attempting to murder a police inspector
00:08with a traditional curved knife, known as a karambit.
00:12The Iyer Kero Sessions Court handed down the sentence
00:15against Muhammad Ferris Abdullah on Wednesday.
00:17The incident occurred at around 1 in the morning on April 11
00:21at a location in Tanjung Kling.
00:23Police Inspector Esmal Fahmy Abdul-Malek
00:26noticed the accused behaving suspiciously
00:28and identified himself as a police officer.
00:31Rather than comply, Ferris fled approximately 300 metres
00:35while clutching a karambit and a screwdriver.
00:38When ordered to surrender, he shouted that he would kill
00:41any police officer who tried to stop or arrest him.
00:44The accused then swung the weapon directly at Inspector Esmal.
00:48He only dropped it after a warning shot was fired into the air
00:51by a fellow officer.
00:53Muhammad Ferris was also handed five years' imprisonment
00:56and one stroke of the cane for possessing a dangerous weapon
00:58in a public place without lawful purpose.
01:01Both sentences are to run concurrently from the date of his arrest.
01:05Separately, at the Magistrates' Court,
01:08Ferris pleaded guilty to three additional charges
01:10of threatening police officers,
01:11injuring an officer with a machete,
01:13and obstructing a civil servant in their duties.
01:16He was sentenced to seven months' imprisonment for each charge,
01:19also running concurrently.
