00:00The sharp increase in the price of diesel has prompted calls for new incentives to ease businesses into making the
00:07transition to green vehicles.
00:09Two business groups FMT spoke to said that various industries, particularly those in the agricultural, transport and logistics sectors, are
00:19already feeling the pinch.
00:20For instance, SME Association of Malaysia President Chin Chi Siung pointed out that the impact is especially severe for those
00:29in the agricultural sector where diesel vehicles are used to transport produce to the market.
00:36Similarly, the travel business has also been hit badly, Federation of Malaysian Business Association's Deputy Secretary General Ganesh Michael said.
00:45He said the right incentives could encourage travel industry players to switch from diesel-powered vans and buses to electric
00:53vehicles to ferry tourists around.
00:55For Chin and Ganesh, the main obstacle to a widespread adoption of EVs is the high cost of the vehicles,
01:02but incentives such as temporary exemption of road tax and a reduction or even exemption from import duty could boost
01:10demand.
01:12Ganesh said that apart from offering a diesel subsidy, the government must also accelerate the shift to green alternatives.
01:19One way, he said, is to make EVs more affordable, as vans currently cost about RM300,000 each.
