00:00Incoming Hungarian Prime Minister Peter Magyar promises to be a leader for all after ending
00:05Viktor Orban's 16-year rule in a landslide election victory.
00:10President of the European Commission says she wants to make swift and overdue progress
00:14in restoring ties with Budapest after Peter Magyar's victory in the Hungarian election.
00:20The US military has announced it will impose a total blockade of all Iranian ports from
00:24Monday afternoon as high-level negotiations collapse in Pakistan over the weekend.
00:31Confident in the Constitutional Parliamentary Majority, Peter Magyar, leader of the Tija Party,
00:37delivered his victory speech in Budapest, emphasizing that no other party in democratic Hungarian
00:42history has ever received such a high level of trust from the people.
00:48Our victory could be seen not from the moon but from every Hungarian window, said Magyar
00:53before referencing outgoing Prime Minister Viktor Orban's victory speech in 2022, when
00:58he said his mandate margin was so big, it could be seen from the moon.
01:04I have given an opportunity for the government to create a working and human home, all Hungarian
01:22people.
01:24In his speech, Magyar promised to dismantle the Orban regime and called for the resignation
01:29of state leaders appointed by Fidesz, whom he called puppets.
01:34In a bid to reassure Fidesz voters, the incoming Prime Minister said that he would work towards
01:39national reconciliation and be a ruler for all.
01:47The Tija Party's two-thirds victory in Budapest was greeted with overflowing joy and happiness.
01:54Among the young people celebrating in the city center, some immediately gave into the celebratory
01:59mood, while others continued to tally the votes long after the results were in.
02:05Everyone watched the election coverage broadcast in public squares and entertainment venues with
02:10keen interest.
02:12A first time Walter described how he would forever remember the moment when he and his friends
02:18realized the opposition had won.
02:36Most people in the celebrating crowd felt relieved upon seeing the results.
03:03Most of the young people interviewed had taken Monday off since there was a street festival in Budapest
03:08on Sunday night.
03:20President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen says she wants to make swift and overdue progress
03:25in restoring ties between Brussels and Budapest.
03:28Her comments came a day after Peter Magyar secured a victory in the Hungarian election and put an end to
03:35Viktor Orbán's 16 years of uninterrupted power.
03:39Magyar and his TISA Party asked to win a supermajority which he would need to undo the far-reaching reforms
03:46enacted by Viktor Orbán in his self-styled project of illiberal democracy.
03:51The people of Hungary have spoken and they have reclaimed their European path.
03:57It is a victory for fundamental freedoms.
04:02So with this result our union is stronger.
04:05Our union is more united.
04:08It was an exceptional evening yesterday.
04:10Of course we will start working with the government as soon as possible.
04:15Contacts between Brussels and Budapest are expected to begin immediately once Magyar formally takes office around mid-May.
04:23The European Commission is currently withholding roughly 17 billion euros in cohesion and Covid recovery funds
04:30due to an array of legal challenges with Budapest on the rule of law, judicial independence, academic freedom, asylum law
04:38and LGBTQ plus rights.
04:41Separately Budapest is waiting for the Commission's green light for its 16 billion euros defence plan under SAFE, a loan
04:47-backed programme.
04:49For Magyar, the release of EU money is a top priority.
04:52The incoming Prime Minister believes the supermajority will help him pass the reforms needed and meet the criteria that the
05:00Commission has established as a precondition for unfreezing.
05:09The victory of Peter Maia and his TISA party is a very important moment for the EU and a historic
05:16moment for Hungary, former European Council President Charles Michel said on Monday.
05:22That's an important step for more European unity and I hope that it will allow the European Union to be
05:30more integrated, to be more ambitious and finally to make the decisions to make this European sovereignty not a slogan
05:37but to make it a reality.
05:39As a first move, the Hungarian politician said on Sunday that Hungary will join the European Public Prosecutor's Office,
05:47the body which investigates transnational and complex financial crimes.
05:52Magyar's priority is to tackle the necessary reforms to unblock the 17 billion euros frozen by the European Commission
06:00due to concerns regarding the rule of law in the country ruled until now by Viktor Orban.
06:06Now we have to see how the new government in Hungary will manage and will put in place reforms that
06:13are needed,
06:13it will give the signals that what they have announced before the elections will become a reality in the country,
06:20which will allow, I suppose, the European institutions to make decisions in favour of unleashing the financing for Hungary.
06:30Ukraine is also expected to benefit from Orban's defeat after 16 years in power,
06:35as the outgoing Prime Minister was known for blocking a 90 billion euros loan to Kyiv.
06:43The US military has announced it will impose a total blockade of all Iranian ports from Monday afternoon,
06:48fueling fears of a wider war and sending global oil prices surging.
06:53The move follows the collapse of high-level negotiations in Pakistan over the weekend.
06:58US President Donald Trump stated the blockade is necessary to clear the strait of hormones of mines
07:02and ensure it remains open to international shipping,
07:06insisting that Tehran must not be permitted to profit from its control of the waterway.
07:12Iran's Revolutionary Guard had already warned that they maintain full control of the strait,
07:17threatening to trap any military challenger in what they describe as a deadly vortex.
07:22Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has formally backed the decision,
07:26confirming that his government is in full coordination with Washington.
07:31Meanwhile, Pakistan, acting as the primary mediator,
07:34has called on both sides to honour the fragile two-week ceasefire,
07:37which experts now say is at risk of a total collapse.
07:44US President Donald Trump was harsh in his criticism of Pope Leo XIV as he spoke to reporters just outside
07:51Air Force One late on Sunday.
07:54Trump called the first US-born Poniff a liberal and criticized his no-war and immigration stances,
08:00defending them as essential to combat crime and evil.
08:03We don't like a pope that's going to say that it's okay to have a nuclear weapon.
08:09We don't want a pope that says crime is okay in our cities.
08:13I don't like it. I'm not a big fan of Pope Leo.
08:15He's a very liberal person, and he's a man that doesn't believe in stopping crime.
08:21He's a man that doesn't think that we should be toying with a country that wants a nuclear weapon so
08:29they can blow up the world.
08:30I'm not a fan of Pope Leo.
08:33The comments came after a scathing post on social media prior to his landing in Washington
08:38in which the US President lambasted the pope as weak and called on him to, quote,
08:43get his act together.
08:45His attack started after Leo suggested that, quote,
08:48the delusion of omnipotence is what is fueling the US-Israeli war in Iran.
08:54Meanwhile, the Poniff has embarked on an 11-day tour of Africa
08:57where he will visit Catholic churches in Algeria, Cameroon, Angola and Equatorial Guinea.
09:04Shortly after his arrival in Algeria, Leo said he is focused on promoting peace
09:09and added that he has no intention to debate with Trump.
09:16Poland and South Korea agreed on Monday to upgrade the bilateral relationship between the two countries to a comprehensive strategic
09:25partnership.
09:25Poland's Prime Minister Donald Tusk was in Seoul for a summit with President Lee Yamyung.
09:32Tusk and Lee discussed a wide range of issues with the main focus on the expansion of defence cooperation.
09:40Poland and South Korea are set to step up their cooperation in the defence industry under a $44.2 billion
09:47framework agreement signed in July 2022.
09:50Lee stated that this partnership extended beyond arms sales to include joint production, technology transfers and training.
10:00Tusk described South Korea as Poland's most important ally after the United States, especially in the defence industry.
10:08The two leaders also agreed to expand their cooperation across a wide range of areas,
10:13including energy supply chains, infrastructure, science and technology, high-tech industries and space.
10:24Peru's almost 35 million population will have to wait until at least the end of Monday to learn who their
10:30next president will be,
10:31after logistical issues left tens of thousands of voters unable to cast their ballots on Sunday.
10:37The problems prompted electoral authorities in Peru to grant a one-day voting extension to over 52,000 people in
10:44the capital, Lima, and hundreds more abroad.
10:47The extension was announced shortly after vote counting began on Sunday evening.
10:52The election comes amid a surge in violent crime and corruption in the South American nation, causing widespread discontent among
10:59voters.
11:00A former minister, a comedian, and a political heiress are among 35 candidates vying to become Peru's ninth president in
11:08just 10 years.
11:09More than 27 million people are eligible to vote in this year's presidential election.
11:15They're also being asked to choose members of a bicameral Congress for the first time in more than 30 years,
11:21after recent legislative reforms were passed that concentrate significant power in the new upper chamber.
11:26A presidential candidate needs more than 50 percent of the votes to win outright,
11:31but a runoff in June is highly likely given the deeply divided electorate and the large pool of candidates.
