Rory McIlroy goes back-to-back at The Masters! What were your thoughts on the weekend? Thoughts on Rory's play? Was there a lack of Sunday suspense/drama?
Transcript
00:00Yes, present. Sean, good morning. Howdy. I don't want to start with you because the result of the Masters yesterday
00:08afternoon.
00:10That's fine. I kind of coped with it on Friday when I told you he was going to win. So,
00:14you know, it is what it is.
00:15I was I the more that he spoke Rory McIlroy over the weekend, the more I moved over to your
00:23side on what an absolute dinky is.
00:25But I that I that tournament always Wiggy, Mago, you guys can you guys can both go get a glass
00:33of water.
00:34Check my phone right now. But always that tournament is excellent television.
00:39The the unfortunately, the middle of yesterday was better than the ending of yesterday.
00:45Curtis, I felt like I don't know whether I'm just a fraudulent golf fan, but like absent tiger absent, like
00:52I don't know.
00:53Yesterday, I felt like Wiggy was right. Like I just Rory's not a guy I root for, but like the
01:00awkward pan to the like lunchroom in Northern Ireland with 15 people was like, you remember when the Red Sox
01:07were obviously remember, but in 04 when the Red Sox finished their comeback of the Yankees, they kept showing bars
01:13in New York of Red Sox fans instead of showing bars in Boston.
01:18It was very odd. But yeah, I think that they are trying to find a way to make Rory McIlroy
01:25likable.
01:26And I think going to square peg round hole, going to the golf club in Northern Ireland where his dad
01:34worked three jobs, worked in the pro shop, worked at work behind the bar so that Rory could have the
01:41opportunity to use the range and practice.
01:43I think they think that's going to make him likable, but yeah, I mean, and Scheffler is the latest and
01:48greatest example of everybody's like, he's unstoppable.
01:51He's the new tiger. It's like, Nope, he's really great. He's going to be one of the great golfers, but
01:55like that, I don't know what I watch him.
01:59Does it seem like it really bothers him?
02:02Yeah. Like he's going to go grab some, you know, waffle house and go home and watch some cartoons.
02:08Like that's his night. Like, I don't know. Like when, when, when I would watch Tiger and, and, and just
02:14Phil and those guys, like, it felt like there was legitimate rivalry and tension and drama with this.
02:20It's kind of a bunch of really rich guys hitting a white ball.
02:22The only guy that felt like it was kind of life or death for was Justin Rose.
02:26Yeah.
02:26He fell apart on the back nine on Sunday.
02:28And that's who, that's who I ended up rooting for. I, when it was, when you felt like Rory may
02:35have been falling out of contention there and you had, uh, Rose and Scheffler and Cam Young and Hatton and,
02:45and those guys all with a shot at it.
02:48That to me was, that was the better part of yesterday.
02:51Yeah. It was, uh, it Sunday lacked the drama that you wanted. It was great. Like there was, it was
02:57good for the first hour or two, uh, when those guys teed off.
03:00And then it was just like, everybody just couldn't figure their crap out, especially in the back half of that
03:05tournament. And Rory McIlroy did, he didn't make any massive mistakes.
03:08And when he did, when he on 18 absolutely blasts one into the woods, it was so bad. It was
03:13in a good spot. He was fine.
03:14He could get out easy and just get away with the bogey and walk out with the wind.
03:18Like it's just, it's, it's unfortunate that Scotty Scheffler had such a bad day on Friday. Otherwise we absolutely could
03:25have gotten a very dramatic Sunday finish between Scotty and Rory.
03:28Yeah. But yet he became the only guy in, since they've been keeping records in 1942 without a bogey, uh,
03:38on Saturday and Sunday in the third and fourth rounds, which is pretty incredible. So, uh, well, anyway, Rory McIlroy
03:45ends up being one of only four.
03:48Guys to repeat Wiggy as masters champions. There you go. And I know you were glued to the television yesterday
03:55for the, for the entire thing.
03:57I was well, Greg, uh, Rory McIlroy became only the fourth back-to-back, uh, masters winner, uh, in the
04:03tournament's history, joining tiger, Nick Faldo and Jack Nicholas.
04:06Uh, Rory talked about the preparation he made, uh, heading into the masters this week. Here was Rory McIlroy.
04:13Yeah. I, I joked, um, last week and going into this week, like this place feels like my home course.
04:20I haven't played anywhere else in the last two or three weeks, really.
04:24So I felt prepared in that way. I felt prepared that, you know, wherever I hit it on the golf
04:29course, I sort of know what to do. I know where to miss, you know, I'm pretty comfortable with all
04:32the shots around the greens.
04:33And, and yeah, I think it is. It's, it's a, it's a good blueprint. I'm not, I said this earlier
04:38in the week, I'm not going to take three weeks off before every major, but to get to the major
04:43venues early, you know, do your preparation, play.
04:46And not just play and, and look at things and like actually play, like go out there with one ball,
04:52shoot a score, you know, try to try to do it that way.
04:55I think, you know, and I, I've talked to Jack Nicklaus over the years about how he prepared for majors
04:59and he would go the week before and he would simulate a tournament.
05:04He played one ball for four days, shoot scores because so then when he got to the tournament that, you
05:08know, it was sort of, you know, it felt second nature to him.
05:11So I did a little bit of that leading up to here. And I think that's a, it's certainly a
05:15good way to prepare going into the next majors.
05:18Well, nice that you have the luxury to do that. There are other guys who have to play in other
05:22tournaments who can't do that.
05:24Like our guy, Jake Knapp has to go out in the Valero, Texas open and shoot a 10 under.
05:28I mean, he said on Saturday that, that he, uh, multiple times he would drop Poppy off at school, hop
05:36on a PJ and fly up to Augusta and play around and then be home in time to have dinner
05:41with Poppy.
05:42The douchiness oozing off of Roy McIlroy never ceases to amaze me.
05:45If I'm going to be honest, that sounds like a great life.
05:47That's pretty impressive. So all golfers can, if they wanted to, cause I, this is interesting hearing this a week
05:55before they can go play that course to get familiar with it.
05:58Well, some of them, the ones that have exemptions or, uh, can just like walk into any tournament they want.
06:03Yeah. Those guys can, cause they don't have to play in the smaller tournaments, but guys like Jake Knapp, who
06:08we've had on the show are still kind of earning their way on the PGA tour and need to earn
06:12their way onto and into certain events.
06:14And so they have to play in these smaller tournaments, like the Valero, Texas, but like, I don't think if,
06:19if Knapp could, he would play three weeks in advance and Rory can.
06:23So why shouldn't he? I don't know. I mean, if Knapp wanted to, I'm asking, so let's say he said,
06:30I'm not going to play in this Texas tournament.
06:32He won't qualify. Oh, he has to qualify or something like that. And the other thing is like, I don't
06:39know.
06:39What do the people that do analytics think of this? Like Rory won the masters last year. It, it was
06:46a thing.
06:47He tried to gag away even in the 18th into the playoff hole. He wins it and he goes this
06:52year and he wins it.
06:54Like, yeah, the analytics people would tell you, this is, this should have happened years and years ago because he's
06:59the perfect, he like his, the way he plays golf perfectly fits Augusta.
07:03Right. But it was, it was struggling with his driver a bit this, this year. And he, and, uh, he
07:09was in this tournament. He was in the woods four times every round.
07:13And he wasn't last year during the masters. Any difference in the drivers?
07:17He got called out and they had to change the driver. That's why he flew.
07:23Also, I think it was interesting too, how many times he putted from off the green. Like it just showed
07:28you how much the, uh,
07:29That was interesting. Yeah. Because it showed how, how toasted the, uh, the collar around the green was and he
07:36could just putt and the speed really didn't change.
07:38That reminds me of Goodwill hunting, but I don't want to say the line because I don't know if he
07:41can.
07:41It was just, you know, and there are a lot of people who, when we talked about it earlier this
07:46morning, were like, I love Rory. I don't know why you guys don't like him.
07:50It was, with the exception of him, from my perspective, it was such a likable group that was on that
07:57leaderboard yesterday.
07:59And it was frustrating, uh, that, uh, they weren't able to close out and the pressure, I guess.
08:05I mean, you understand, like Cam Young kind of fell apart.
08:10Yeah. He had it.
08:12He had the lead.
08:13At one point or another, Justin, at one point or another, each of those guys, Greg, had the lead.
08:18The solo lead.
08:19They were the leaders.
08:20And they kind of just...
