00:04antidepressant pharmaceuticals have long been used to treat anxiety and depression in people
00:08with cancer but what if there were a more natural way to do that well some experts are now pushing
00:13towards more research into psychedelics as a treatment option including lsd mdma and of course
00:19psilocybin the psychedelic and magic mushrooms in a recent meta-analysis of several clinical trials
00:24researchers discovered that the simple intake of one of these drugs reduced feelings of depression
00:29and anxiety dramatically they used beck's depression inventory or a scale where zero is no depression
00:34and 30 or more is labeled as severe depression the simple intake of one of those three drugs was able
00:40to lower depression scores on average by around six points on the scale they were also able to lower
00:44anxiety markedly as well decreasing those feelings by an average of seven to eight points on a separate
00:49anxiety index what's more psilocybin specifically seems to have lasting effects as well in one of
00:55the trials sixty percent of those who took a single high dose of it were able to enter clinical remission
01:00for their depression meaning they had a greater than fifty percent decrease in their previously
01:04measured depressive symptoms and that lasted for six months researchers say there are still some
01:09unknowns related to long-term treatment but add that's exactly why more research into the healing
01:13effects of psychedelics needs to be done
