After a first round of US-Iran talks on ending the Middle East War failed over the weekend, US President Donald Trump announced a US blockade of the Strait of Hormuz and repeated threats to Iranian civil infrastructure. Analysts say Trump could back down and that the door to further talks is still open, but warn that a small spark could reignite fighting.

00:02U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance returns to the U.S. Sunday after failed peace talks with Iran that
00:08could put pressure on a delicate U.S.-Iran ceasefire.
00:13A U.S. official says Iran rejected key U.S. demands, including fully reopening the Strait of Hormuz, critical to
00:20the world's oil and gas supplies.
00:22President Trump says the U.S. will start its own blockade of the Strait, stopping traffic, clearing any mines, and
00:29intercepting any ships that have paid tolls to Iran.
00:33And barely a week into the ceasefire, he's renewed threats to attack civil infrastructure on the Fox News channel's Sunday
00:40Morning Futures, threats some legal experts say would be war crimes if carried out.
00:45But in one half of a day, they wouldn't have one bridge standing, they wouldn't have one electric generating plant
00:53standing, and they're back in the Stone Ages.
00:57Esmail Baghae, a spokesperson for Iran's foreign ministry, says that despite distrust of the U.S., there had been a
01:04degree of agreement, except on a few key stumbling blocks.
01:08He says Iran is still ready for diplomacy.
01:12But the Iranian Parliament Security Commission voiced doubt about the U.S. commitment to diplomacy, and had this to say
01:19about Trump's latest remarks.
01:23It is natural for a defeated president to speak this way.
01:26If he did not use such language and rhetoric, I think the extent of the failure would become unacceptable even
01:32to the American public.
01:37Some see the failure of the first talks as part of a diplomatic dance, with neither side wanting to give
01:43the appearance of giving in too soon to the public back home.
01:47Because at the end of the day, neither side has said that there won't be any more talks within this
01:5314-day period, of which there are still eight or so days left.
01:57And neither side has restarted the war.
02:00But even among those who agree the door to more talks is open, and the ceasefire is holding, some are
02:06concerned that it wouldn't take much to set off a new flare-up in this war.
02:11I don't think the fighting will start soon, but certainly it will not de-esclare the situation.
02:18The tension will continue there.
02:20And I think the indication of that the United States will continue to put pressure on Iran.
02:26And so one incident could lead to yet another round of active war.
02:34Mediator Pakistan, host of the failed talks, says both sides must uphold a commitment to a ceasefire,
02:40and that it will try to restart dialogue in the coming days.
02:44But with disagreement on everything from nuclear enrichment to the Strait of Hormuz,
02:48there is a great deal to work through, with limited time.
