00:04I'm Jane McDonald and I've never been to Nashville but it's somewhere I've always
00:10wanted to visit as a singer with 11 albums under me belt I'm drawn to music
00:15city like a moth to a flame so it's time I found my country roots and discover
00:22what makes it one of the top holiday destinations in the US so far I've
00:28visited honky-tonk highway in downtown Nashville it's crazy being inspired by
00:33the mother church of music the Ryman auditorium it's the most amazing place
00:39and fed my soul with traditional Tennessee food this is the best meal I've
00:44had in Nashville but I've also come here to record my first ever country album so
00:50as I continue my voyage of discovery I want to seek out inspiration from every
00:55inch of this city visiting the places and meeting the people who call this town
01:01home are we looking to make a cowgirl hat today and you never know give me a hat
01:06howdy and some boots you might find this northern lass is southern through and
01:12through so come on saddle up partners we're off to Nashville Tennessee yee-haw
01:25as a country music lover and a singer Nashville has always been a dream
01:30destination I've always been a fan of country one of my favorite ever country
01:35artist is Glen Campbell I've always loved his melodic tunes as a singer I loved his
01:42voice but then you know I love Dolly Parton who doesn't love Dolly Parton
01:49and so to come to the home of music legends and record my first country album in the
01:55same studio as Taylor Swift well it's mind-blowing being swiftly love that
02:06there are now daily direct flights to Nashville from the UK and it doesn't
02:10matter what time you arrive Nashville is open and as its music city it really
02:16does come alive at night just south of Broadway's honky-tonk highway is a world
02:22renowned music venue where every night rising country music stars come along to
02:28perform hoping to make their dreams come true Nashville has got something going on
02:35no matter where you look but one of the things you have to do in Nashville is go
02:40to open mic night which is what I'm gonna do at the bluebird cafe every Nashville
02:47guidebook recommends a night at the bluebird cafe first opened in 1982 as a
02:53restaurant with a small stage the bluebird soon became the place to perform in
02:591987 an unknown Garth Brooks played here and secured a record deal the very next day
03:05Keith Urban was a regular at open mic nights and in 2004 this is where a
03:11teenage Taylor Swift was spotted it is now recognized worldwide as a venue that
03:17celebrates the songwriter as well as nurturing new talent so tonight we might
03:23be seeing the next big thing but top tip the bluebird is very popular and while you
03:31can book tickets online entry for open mic is first come first served so be
03:37prepared to queue hi is this the queue it is oh great are you all together we are oh so
03:45I've become to see someone special or you're just coming to the open open mic yeah do you
03:51live here no no where we come from New York oh New York in DC really Wyoming oh my god
03:58tonight again wow I know you all friends yes we're celebrating a friend's 60th birthday oh happy
04:06birthday happy birthday this is the place to come isn't it yes very yeah well I'm looking
04:13forward to getting a Tennessee whiskey down my neck I can tell you people really have traveled from far
04:22and wide to come here and in no time at all we're in over 70,000 people visit the bluebird
04:31annually and
04:33the big names don't just perform here both sure and bonner have sat in this very audience so just to
04:39get a
04:39ticket and get in the door is a win once in drinks are served yes mines of Tennessee whiskey and
04:47there's a
04:48real sense of anticipation in the air as it's a small intimate venue with a shh policy I will do
04:55best to keep quiet it was so lovely to see loads of talent coming in all dressed up in their
05:10bits
05:11bringing the guitars singing their songs that they've created themselves I've been there where
05:25it's tough and it's hard and especially in Nashville because there's so much talent around but one thing I
05:32have learned as well is when you're surrounded by a lot of talent it makes you better and that is
05:41definitely something that happens in Nashville all right so my name is Erlin and I'm from Norway and I moved
05:50here last year and I'm doing country music this is a song I wrote about my grandma showing me some
05:58records
05:58that I really loved Jim Reeves and Tennessee on your forward and stuff like that so it's a song about
06:03that
06:23I liked Erlin and inspired by his grandma and a true country singer he told a story remember you saw
06:31him here first
06:42coming up join me as I step back in time to uncover the fascinating stories of Nashville's past and the
06:50legacy left behind this is probably some of the best wine I've ever tasted and I take a break from
06:57sightseeing to go shopping for Nashville's number one accessory I just
07:01cannot see me walking around Wakefield in these
07:16my guidebook says given the chance I should swap the Nashville bustle for one of its exclusive suburbs to see
07:23how the other half lives a few miles out of the city is Belle Meade this is where the rich
07:28and famous live
07:29Reese Witherspoon Tim McGraw and Faith Hill all call it home houses here sell for as much as twenty three
07:36point eight million dollars
07:41Hi Casey Jane so glad to have you here lovely to meet you welcome to historic Dalmead can I show
07:47you this way to the mansion yes you can thank you very much of course the area is named after
07:53a former 19th century plantation I'm taking a guided tour
07:58with Casey Tennessee Tennessee Tennessee you've outdone yourself so Jane welcome to our historic 1853 homes and this would have
08:07been the entry hallway the grand hallway here this imposing pile was home to five generations of the well-heeled
08:16Harding Jackson family when it wasn't being pillaged and looted by the Confederate Army during the American Civil War this
08:24feels like it's still
08:26like it was all those years ago it's like we're frozen in time now a historic site and winery every
08:35year a whopping 300,000 visitors drink in its rich elite history as soon as you walk in you feel
08:44like you've just stepped back yeah you feel like you should be wearing that you know it puts you at
08:50ease it really does
08:53the family's phenomenal wealth came from breeding thoroughbred racehorses
08:58Seabiscuit and Secretariat can be traced back to Belle Meade as well as virtually all Kentucky Derby winners
09:06this is Bonnie Scotland right here he is the big cheese if you will in this house but he's pictured
09:12alongside someone who is of huge importance to our property and his name was Robert Green
09:18The Harding's had more enslaved people at Belle Meade than nearly all other plantations in the state of Tennessee after
09:26the abolition of slavery Robert stayed as a paid employee
09:30Robert Green was one of those 136 people enslaved here but he became the head hostler or we might call
09:37him the stable master today so he was the backbone of the property he was the front face of the
09:43business so had a huge legacy and also training the staff
09:47under him on the property as well yeah and one of the other leading in slave was a woman named
09:51Susanna Carter she was head of the domestic staff here so kind of running the household yeah and she was
09:57known for her blackberry wine she won several awards the guests love that so that's all part of our story
10:04and believe
10:04So she actually made it here she did she would serve it to the guests the family and now we
10:10have the oldest winery in Nashville Tennessee are you interested in seeing that oh no and of course I am
10:16let's go
10:17Right this way well I can't refuse that famous southern hospitality wow look at this room isn't this great hi
10:25y'all
10:26Laura is our sommelier I have you sat right up here at the bar fabulous since 2009 the not-for
10:35-profit winery has been boosting the visitor experience I bet everything does funnel back into the historic site here and
10:42maintaining this property so we like to joke you're drinking for a good cause
10:45Well there you go I mean it's just getting better right but we'll go ahead and start nice and easy
10:51with American legend
10:52We love to feature this one specifically because of this label this is showcasing Mr. Robert green on the front
10:59I like the horse don't you love the little horse at the end of the bottom look at that you
11:03gotta say right out of the horse's mouth with this one absolutely
11:07Relatively light stewed cherries stewed strawberries what do you think Jane
11:15I'm done it's legendary is it not that is such a good wine yes this is probably some of the
11:23I'm gonna say it the best wine I've ever tasted I know
11:26You could stay all day and wet your whistle but I know my limits we're gonna end as we should
11:33here in Tennessee
11:34With blackberry this one is gonna taste exactly like it sounds just like blackberry juice
11:41Jane this is a such a special wine this is the wine that yeah Susanna Carter one of the enslaved
11:48Exactly would have been making back in the time period oh my god
11:56Oh
11:59That is incredible isn't it yes and more so than drinking pour this over a scoop of vanilla ice cream
12:06Wow drizzle it over some cheesecake
12:09Lara stop stop
12:11That's all you need
12:12It's Ribena with alcohol
12:15What's not to love?
12:17Truly
12:17I love the fact that you know she did all this
12:20It's it's an incredible story and there is a weaving of that history where we can honor them and talk
12:27more about their stories and everything we do has a tie in history which I love so much
12:32Yeah, I love that their legacy goes on
12:35Thank you so much
12:37Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and your fabulous wine
12:41Thank you
12:42I appreciate it
12:42Thank you
12:45Minutes from downtown Nashville but a world away in beautiful Belle Mead
12:51It's been a privilege to step back into 19th century southern life
12:56I think I've been here in a past life personally because I've always fancied a porch
13:03This is my absolute idea of bliss
13:07There's just something so peaceful and so good for your brain and your head to just sit and look out
13:17at the beautiful beautiful falling leaves
13:19Isn't it isn't it great? Yeah porch culture is one of our big things that we do here in the
13:26south
13:27Rocking on a chair and having a chat
13:31Fabulous
13:32I may be a northern lass but after today I'm definitely a southern belle at heart
13:45I'm back in downtown Nashville a few blocks from Broadway to visit a place the travel guides claim is one
13:52of the best spots for great views of the city
13:55The impressive John Segan Tala pedestrian bridge opened in 1909 and spans a mighty 960 meters across the Cumberland River
14:05It offers panoramic views of the city skyline
14:08Look at that
14:11It's just gorgeous
14:14I'm here to meet Sasha a fellow Brit and singer who now lives here in Nashville
14:20Are you Sasha?
14:22I am are you Jake?
14:23I am how are you doing?
14:25I'm doing great how are you?
14:26Oh really well
14:27So where are you from?
14:29I'm from Hereford
14:29I know I know everyone always everyone always thinks that I am I am like the most redneck British person
14:37that you can possibly meet
14:38So tell me your story then how have you ended up here?
14:41I've always loved country music
14:42Yeah
14:42I grew up listening to it with my dad
14:44So I'd always wanted to come to Nashville
14:46Mm-hmm
14:47So mum and I actually came on a trip to Nashville in 2010 originally and I just absolutely fell in
14:53love with it
14:53So that just got to Nashville
14:55What is it that makes me country?
14:57Come on tell me
14:58What is it that makes you country?
14:59Yeah
14:59It's totally a state of mind
15:01Yeah
15:02But if we're talking about specific like aesthetic things you need a hat and a pair of cowboy boots
15:08Which you don't have
15:10No I don't
15:11Can you point me in the right direction?
15:13I can give you a hat
15:14Shall we go shopping?
15:15Let's do it
15:16Yeah
15:16Let's do it
15:17Come on
15:22If you come to Nashville you simply have to buy a pair of cowboy boots
15:26Not that I need an excuse to go shopping
15:30Basically we're gonna go this way that way and follow the music
15:33Sounds good to me
15:38Broadway might be famous for all its bars but it's also great for shopping
15:42Sasha's going to use her inside knowledge to help me put me best foot forward
15:50The demand for cowboy boots has never been higher
15:536.4 million pairs of boots were sold in the US in 2023
15:58And the global market is worth around 3.4 billion dollars
16:03So we tailor, Beyonce and most of Nashville wearing this classic western footwear
16:09It's time I did too
16:11Oh my god look at this
16:12Here it is
16:13Look at this place
16:14It's like a shopaholic's dream
16:16It is isn't it?
16:17Look at all these different designs
16:20They're all amazing
16:22Patterns, pictures
16:24Yeah
16:24Those are nice
16:26Space themed
16:26Yeah
16:29There's so much choice
16:31I mean I like to shop but even for me there's a lot to take in
16:34Oh my god I love them
16:37Cowboy boots first emerged in the 1870s
16:40When riding boots were adapted for cowboys
16:43They became mainstream in the 30s and 40s
16:46With the rise of westerns and country music
16:49Symbolizing the free American spirit
16:53Right
16:53I think I want something fancy
16:55Hi
16:56I'm looking for some diamante or
16:59Yeah
16:59Some like sequins or glitter or something
17:02Yeah
17:02Yeah let me show you a few that we have
17:04Whoa
17:05Those are super glittery
17:08White leather studded knee high
17:11They are nice
17:13I mean they're great boots but
17:15I just cannot see me walking around Wakefield in these
17:20These catch your eye at all
17:24I look like I've got my brother's shoes on
17:28It's a very personal thing is a boot isn't it?
17:31It's got to shout at you hasn't it?
17:32Oh yes
17:32You've got to say hey I'm the boot for you
17:34These we have some studs
17:37Oh nice
17:37Yes
17:38Ah the stud
17:39Now we're talking
17:41My nails
17:43I hope they've got them in my size
17:46And now for the Cinderella moment
17:51I love these
17:53They're not my size
17:55So hey
17:57You can't have everything in life can you?
17:59Thank you
18:00Yes of course
18:01Very much appreciated
18:02I will thank you
18:06Hang on
18:07Who am I?
18:09I can't come all this way
18:10And not buy a pair of cowboy boots
18:12Luckily the great thing about Nashville
18:15Is there are shops galore
18:17And just across the street
18:19There's more
18:21I found them
18:22Yeah?
18:23You think?
18:26Okay yeah that's perfect
18:30These are going to be my favourite boots in the whole world
18:34Yeah that's everything you wanted
18:35That's perfect
18:36It is
18:36Now for the moment of truth
18:38Yay
18:39I love them
18:40Finally
18:41Cowboy boots
18:42Tick
18:43Thank you for all your help today
18:44Oh my god of course
18:45You've been absolute shy
18:47You have got to go and get yourself a pair of cowboy boots
18:51Even if you never wear them again in your life
18:53And they're up in your attic for the rest of your days
18:55You've still got to buy a pair of cowboy boots
19:03I'm on a shopping roll
19:05And judging by the blinging ear
19:07This looks like just the place to find a jacket
19:10To go with me rhinestone cowboy boots
19:14Oh my god look at this place
19:16It's Sequin Heaven
19:17Hello
19:18Welcome
19:19Sorry?
19:21Say that again?
19:21Now the how are you doing?
19:23Welcome
19:24Where are you from?
19:25I'm from York
19:26You're joking me
19:27Yeah yeah
19:28I'm from Wakefield
19:29Wakey lass
19:30Yeah I'm Jane by the way
19:31Jane Andrew
19:31Pleasure
19:32Lovely to meet you
19:33Is this your show?
19:34Yeah yeah
19:34So how long have you been here?
19:36Been in Nashville for ten years
19:37Ten years?
19:38And you haven't lost that accent?
19:39I think so a little bit
19:40No not at all
19:42Not at all
19:44I'm looking for a sparkly jacket
19:47I definitely think we can help you out
19:50How did you honestly get started?
19:52Because it's
19:52Where did you get any old iron from?
19:55Well any old iron started from my family business basically
19:58It used to be a scrapyard
19:59It started in 1872
20:00So I did that for ten years from leaving school
20:03And then I just decided that
20:05You know I prefer sequins to scrap metal you know
20:11That's a great story
20:14After establishing himself as a stylist and designer in the UK
20:17Andrew moved to New York
20:20But his music inspired fashion brought him to Nashville
20:23And he's now a go-to for the great and good of the music industry
20:27This is a jacket that we made for Beyonce
20:30Wow
20:30She was eight and a half months pregnant
20:32That's fabulous isn't it?
20:33Yeah
20:34Let's hope he can help me
20:37I love this detail here
20:38Yeah and all of these are individually put on one by one as well
20:42You know each jacket like this one can take up to a month to make
20:44Um
20:46But this one's this one I love for you
20:48Um
20:49Iridescent
20:49Oh wow
20:50All day long
20:51Uh huh
20:52And then I also love this as well
20:54This is like
20:55Ooh
20:56This is lightning bolt one
20:57I love that one
20:58Which is another super one
21:01And it actually changes to like a silver on the other side as well
21:06So we'll try these three on if you don't mind
21:09Yeah of course yeah
21:21I think I found it
21:25Oh yeah
21:26One sequined jacket to go with me rhinestone encrusted boots
21:31I'm coming over all sparkly Nashville
21:35Oh yeah
21:41Coming up join me as I take on Nashville's hot chicken challenge
21:45Help
21:48And I get us VIP tickets to Music City's Holy Grail
21:52How are you doing out there?
22:02One of Nashville's oldest neighbourhoods the nations just west of downtown is a former industrial area
22:09And according to the guidebooks it's becoming something of a food hub
22:14In the south the most popular dish is fried chicken
22:17But in Nashville they like their chicken hot
22:20Time to see if I can handle the heat
22:25Hello
22:26Hi
22:26I've heard all about this hot chicken in Nashville
22:30Neat
22:31Apparently yours is one of the best in town
22:33Oh I love to hear that
22:34Yeah
22:34Absolutely
22:35How hot would you like to go today?
22:37Chef and founder of Pepperfire Hot Chicken Isaac
22:40Has been perfecting his secret spice recipes since 2010
22:46So why is Nashville so synonymous with hot chicken?
22:50Well it started years ago
22:51I think about 70 years ago
22:52And supposedly it started as a lovers quarrel
22:55And one of the guys who was apparently a ladies man
22:58Stayed out too late
22:59Came back
23:00The lady was not happy
23:01And she made him his favourite dish of fried chicken
23:03And she just peppered it up
23:05And added everything into the kitchen sink
23:08And apparently he liked it
23:11And then had her make it again
23:12And then he started making it
23:13And 70 some odd years later
23:16It's what we're known for
23:17Is that a true story?
23:19As far as we know
23:20Oh my god
23:21So what was like a revenge
23:24Yeah
23:24Ended up being the best thing ever?
23:26For me
23:28Like it
23:28And the rest as they say
23:30Is hot chicken history
23:32How will I know what's what?
23:34Well the trick with hot chicken is to make sure
23:36That you get it as hot as you like it
23:37Right up to the edge
23:39But not go past that
23:40Right
23:40And so we've had different heat levels up top here
23:44Isaac's hot chicken chart goes from zero
23:47Which is no heat to the hottest at six
23:50Called appropriately no refunds
23:53I reckon I could go as hot as level three
23:56The spark plug
23:57With significant heat
23:59But I've come all this way
24:01So I'd be foolish not to take on a bit of a challenge
24:04Right
24:05I'm gonna try
24:06A learner's permit
24:08A spark plug
24:10Dare I go hotter?
24:12Do many ladies have the really hot?
24:15You know they do
24:16They do
24:17Okay
24:18Right
24:19Sold
24:20I'll take a level five overdrive as well
24:22I must be mad
24:26All right here we go
24:27Got you a few samples here
24:29Got some pickles
24:30Or sauce
24:31First up level two
24:36Why am I blowing it?
24:37It's gonna blow my head off innit?
24:44That one's all right
24:46Quite light spices and they're very good for you
24:48It has got a kick I'm not gonna lie
24:50But it hasn't made me run to the toilet
24:54I can definitely taste the peppery cayenne coating
24:57But it's not overpowering the chicken
24:59It's crispy slightly sweet
25:01With an undeniable but manageable warmth
25:06Next getting hotter
25:07Level three
25:08I'm feeling a bit nervous now
25:11Oh
25:16That is definitely hotter
25:18I'm gonna start sweating in a minute
25:20Do you want to drink?
25:22Yes please
25:25Oh you can feel it on your chest and everything
25:27It's gone right down my chest
25:29Oh
25:33Definitely more fiery
25:35More intense
25:36And less taste
25:37This is now purely about handling the heat
25:41And now the overdrive
25:44Level five
25:46Why am I doing this?
25:48Right here we go
25:50I'll have half of that
25:51Oh come on Jane don't be a wuss
25:55Get it in there
25:59Oh
26:01That's hot
26:03Oh my god
26:09Help
26:12Can somebody help me?
26:13Help me
26:16I'm going to die
26:17Can somebody get me something to stop this?
26:19Like milk or an ambulance or oxygen
26:23Chef Isaac to the rescue
26:25The trick with hot chicken is pickles
26:27Thank you very much
26:28You're welcome
26:30Little did I know
26:32It wasn't milk I needed
26:34Actually it does
26:35That is incredible
26:37How a pickle
26:39With a load of vinegar in an acid
26:41Can actually counteract cayenne pepper
26:44Oh
26:44No, that one is definitely not for me
26:47Because I would like to actually keep my taste buds for the rest of my life
26:52That one I'll probably have after a really good night out if you know what I mean
26:57A couple of bottles of wine
26:58That one I would eat any time of day
27:00It's lovely
27:01Spicy
27:03Like that one
27:06No, not for me
27:08I need another pickle
27:12But I feel like, you know, I've had the challenge
27:15I've done it
27:16And I've failed
27:19I'm not as hot as I thought
27:24I always thought spicy food
27:27Getting milk
27:28Milk is usually what we have in the UK
27:31No, pickles
27:32So that was a real revelation
27:35So if you're going out
27:37And having really spicy food
27:40Take some gherkins with you
27:42I tell you, you'll never look back
27:49My search for musical inspiration in this amazing city continues
27:53And I'm not finished yet
27:55Time for the big one
27:58The grand old Opry House in Opryland
28:00Just a few miles from downtown Nashville
28:04Stacey
28:04Yes, Jane
28:06Lovely to meet you
28:07Nice to meet you
28:08Welcome to the grand old Opry
28:11For a hundred years
28:13The grand old Opry radio show
28:14Has been the home of country music
28:17Broadcasting life to millions of listeners across America
28:21And this has been its home since 1974
28:24When it moved here from the Ryman Auditorium
28:28Are you excited?
28:30I am so excited to be here
28:31I can't even tell you
28:32It's where a lot of country music dreams come true here
28:35Really? Yes
28:36And my country music dreams have come true
28:39Because I've booked a VIP tour
28:41And they only take place before the show
28:44So there's a real buzz
28:47All of our greats in country music have also performed here
28:49Among all of our homes of the show
28:51Like Johnny Cash and Dolly Parton
28:54Wow
28:54Carrie Underwood, Garth Brooks
28:55They've all graced these halls here
28:57Gosh
28:58Yes
29:00To think I'm lucky enough to walk these halls too
29:03So welcome to our dressing rooms
29:05We have 18 of them
29:07Yeah
29:07And they each have a special theme
29:10We just passed one dedicated to our Opry debuts
29:13So that's exciting for them
29:14A lot of nerves, a lot of excitement for them tonight
29:17I can understand why
29:18I mean just walking through the doors freaked me out
29:20Right, yes, a lot of butterflies happening for sure
29:23Yeah
29:23Would you like to go out on stage?
29:25Oh my god, yes please
29:27Alright, so we're going to go back this way
29:29Okay
29:29And head out there
29:31Performing at the Opry is strictly by invitation only
29:35So even to walk onto this stage for the tour is a real honour
29:39Are you going to perform for us?
29:41I can barely talk Stacey, let alone sing
29:44I'm too excited
29:46So you're taking the same steps all of our artists do
29:49Yeah
29:49To make it to the stage
29:50Oh my god
29:50I wonder if Dolly ever felt this nervous walking out here
29:54Wow
29:55And here we are
29:57Welcome to the Grand Ole Opry stage
30:01Excited, right?
30:02Yeah, it's incredible
30:04I'm quite speechless
30:06I get it
30:07And I'm usually never speechless Stacey
30:09Yeah, I get it
30:10But this is beyond anything I could have ever dreamed of
30:14Wow
30:15But the most special piece of the stage is the famous circle of wood in the heart of it
30:20Front and centre
30:21Right, yeah
30:22You want to see what it feels like?
30:23This unassuming six foot circle slap bang in the middle of the stage is actually original wooden boards from the
30:31Ryman Auditorium
30:32The Opry's most famous former home
30:35I've got to get them there
30:37Do it
30:37See what it feels like
30:41Oh my gosh
30:43Everyone from Hank Williams to Patsy Cline, Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash have stood on those planks of wood
30:49That's why I get so nervous
30:50You can feel the energy, can't you? Or is that just my nerves?
30:54Both, right?
30:55I don't think I've ever been this nervous about standing somewhere
31:00They say when you stand here, you can hear the boards creak
31:05Like they respond to the history that's being created by each performer
31:10This is amazing
31:11And just feeling that stage and...
31:16Oh
31:16You're ready to perform now
31:18I absolutely am
31:19It's a huge part of our history
31:21Yeah
31:21When you're actually on this stage, it's completely overwhelming
31:26I'm close to tears now
31:27I'm really holding it back
31:29Because it's...
31:31Hugely emotional
31:31It's very sweet
31:33Hugely emotional
31:34I'm just a little old lass from UK, you know
31:37And to be on the grand old opera stage, it's just woof
31:42The Opry welcomes country legends, current artists and up-and-comers to its family of performers
31:49And as if this fabulous tour wasn't prestigious enough
31:53Just got back here and they've just asked me to be a guest announcer this evening
31:59Which is a huge, huge honour for anyone to be asked to do that
32:04I am quite overwhelmed being at the Grand Old Opry
32:07And I...I had no idea it would affect me like this
32:13How amazing to be a part of this
32:16Now I need you to clear out of here because I've just got myself a jacket
32:20I don't know whose jacket it is
32:21But I'm going to put a jacket on and make myself look a bit more presentable
32:26For that amazing Grand Old Opry stage
32:29Here I come
32:36In my newly borrowed jacket I might have got a bit carried away and turned up early
32:42But being early pays off as they're letting me press the button that opens the curtain and starts the show
32:48Oh, no pressure
32:49We've got three minutes still, okay?
32:53Yeah
32:53We've got three times here
32:54This is exciting
32:57Wow, this is fabulous
33:00I love it
33:01Coming up on 40 seconds
33:05Oh my God
33:06I've seen everybody here
33:11Fifteen, stand by
33:12Fifteen, stand by
33:14Four
33:15Three
33:16Go
33:17One
33:18One
33:19Five
33:19Lumencox have seen
33:21You've got
33:26They were there at this favourite Cowboys
33:28Riders in the Sky
33:35And before I know it, it's my turn
33:37Throughout the year we have been honoured to welcome guest announcers to our podium here as we celebrate 100 years
33:43of the Grand Ole Opry
33:44And she is a singer, songwriter, television presenter from Yorkshire, England
33:48It's her passion for music that brought her here to Music City, USA
33:53With her down-to-earth charm, she is one of Britain's most beloved entertainers
33:56Will you please give a warm Grand Ole Opry welcome to Jane McDonald's
34:07How are you doing out there?
34:10Y'all having a good time?
34:13Anybody in from the United Kingdom?
34:16Well, hello
34:17Who would have thought this?
34:19Who would have thought this?
34:20I am thrilled
34:22But this is not about me tonight
34:24This is a family group from Texas
34:29Joined the Opry
34:31In 1984
34:33Members of the Texas Country Music Hall of Fame
34:37Please give a grand Old Opry welcome to The Whites, everyone
34:42Thank you!
34:45Thank you!
34:55And just like that, I did it. I made my debut on the stage at the Grand Ole Opry
35:06Coming up, I hope nerves don't get the better of me as I pay a last visit to the recording
35:11studio
35:13And when you come to Nashville, you can't go home without a cowboy hat
35:17It's the law, so time to complete that southern look
35:20Right, let's bling it up
35:22Yes, love it
35:23Right, get the rhinestones on it
35:32It's nearing the end of my voyage of discovery in Nashville, Tennessee
35:36Before I go home, I'm squeezing in one last trip to the studio
35:45I'm meeting Chris, one of the writers and producers
35:48So it's just about getting the tempo right
35:50Yeah, just the feel
35:52Yeah
35:53I want to make sure we are still on track with the album
35:56And know that it's all been worth it
36:02This is an iconic piano, by the way
36:05This is a beautiful piano
36:06It's been here a long time and had a lot of hits played on it
36:09Shall we go?
36:10Yeah
36:15When you get to the point where you're at the Blackbird studio
36:20Doing your album
36:22With amazing musicians and amazing writers
36:25And it's your album
36:27That's overwhelming
36:29Well it was for me, very, very overwhelming
36:31You know when the demo we went
36:34Yeah, yeah
36:35It needs to be
36:37Because of the musos now getting the energy
36:40Yeah, that energy just needs to be there
36:42Yeah, happy with that?
36:44Absolutely, fabulous
36:50It's about getting that sound
36:52That everybody's after
36:54And that is the magic of the Blackbird studio
37:00Everything is coming together
37:02There's just one Nashville essential still to tick off my list
37:07I need a hat
37:10Cowboy hats have never been hotter
37:12Western fashion is riding high
37:14With the global market hitting $2.1 billion in 2024
37:20From Pharrell Williams to Beyonce
37:22The cowboy hat is everyone's accessory of choice
37:26Needless to say, there are hat shops all over Nashville
37:29And now you can even have your hat custom made
37:34Oh my god, I'm in Stetson heaven
37:37Hi, welcome to Rancher
37:39How are you doing today?
37:40I'm really well
37:42Love it
37:42Well, are we looking to make a cowgirl hat today?
37:44Absolutely
37:45I think it's the law here, isn't it?
37:47Oh yeah, one in Nashville
37:49The first cowboy hat was invented by a man called John B. Stetson in 1865
37:56Designed for cowboys and ranchers in the West
37:59As country music grew in the 1930s and 40s
38:02The hat with its rugged masculine image was adopted by singers
38:07And became a staple of the country style
38:11But there's a lot to choose from
38:13Thankfully Emily is on hand to help
38:17Can you pick a hat for me?
38:19Because I want something that really suits me
38:20Yeah, are we looking for neutrals or colourful?
38:23I think neutral because I'd wear that not only in Nashville
38:28But I'd probably wear that at home
38:29Something every day
38:30Yeah
38:30Perfect
38:31Mm-hmm
38:32Um, I love this colour
38:34It's a great neutral
38:35Yeah
38:36Goes with everything
38:37Try it on
38:38Right
38:40And we've got our mirror over here
38:42If you want to see how you look
38:44Oh my god
38:45It turns you into a cowgirl, doesn't it?
38:48It really does
38:50Howdy
38:51It does
38:51It has an effect on you
38:53I want a parting yellowstone now
38:56Yeah, that's, that's good
38:57I think that's a good colour
38:58So, thank you for picking the perfect hat as soon as I walk through the door
39:02Yes
39:02That's incredible
39:03Then I'll take you over to the accessories wall
39:05Right
39:06You can kind of browse around and find what you like
39:08We have a ton of different hat bands
39:11Yeah
39:12So we've got leather ones that are studded
39:14We have denim
39:16Braided ones
39:18But then something caught my eye
39:21Rhinestones
39:22Oh, yeah
39:22So you can really make it pop
39:24Yeah, I'm a bit of a rhinestone girl
39:26I want people to know I'm coming
39:28Oh, yeah
39:28Oh, yeah
39:30Right, let's bling it up
39:32Yes, love it
39:33Right, get the rhinestones on it
39:35Rhinestones on my hat to go with my boots
39:38I'm a rhinestone cowgirl
39:40How exciting is this?
39:43Oh my god, it's a blow lamp
39:47And to finish off my hat
39:49I'm getting it branded
39:52Gotta have a steady hand
39:54Wow
39:55That's magic right there
39:56All right
39:57That's fantastic
40:00And then finally
40:02So you pick it up like that
40:03Yeah
40:04You got it
40:07It's classy
40:08It's fabulous
40:10And it's telling y'all what I'm doing
40:12Telling y'all?
40:13What am I?
40:14I'm telling y'all
40:17I'll turn into that southern general country person
40:21Beautiful
40:22Howdy
40:26Saddle up cowboys
40:27There's a new cowgirl in town
40:30Oh, yeah
40:31I've now got my cowboy hat
40:34The transformation is happening
40:36Tick
40:37Cowgirl, I'm not the picture
40:40Perfect choice
40:41That I could be your cowboy
40:53And as this exciting voyage of discovery comes to an end
40:58There really is only one thing left
41:00And that's what everyone comes to Nashville to do
41:04So come on
41:06Let's hit the honky tonks on Broadway
41:08For a good old sing
41:10I've got the boots
41:12I've got the jacket
41:13I've got the hat
41:14And I've got the songs
41:16Thank you Nashville
41:17I'm living the dream
41:18This one's for you
41:20If you see your brother standing by the road
41:25With a heavy load
41:28From the seeds he sowed
41:31If you see your sister falling by the way
41:36Just stop and say
41:39You've gone the wrong way
41:42You've got to try a little kindness
41:45Yes, show a little kindness
41:47Just shine your light for everyone to see
41:53And if you try a little kindness
41:56Then you know I'm alone with the blindness
41:59And I remind you of
42:02And I remind you of
42:04And I remind you of
42:05Yeah
42:07Just stop and say
42:14Amen
42:16You've got to try a little kindness
42:20And I remind you of
42:20Yes, show a little kindness
42:22Just shine your light for everyone to see
42:26And if you try a little kindness
42:31And you only look the blinds
42:34And I'll remind you
42:36And I'll remind you
42:38And I feel good
42:57My daughter's on a French exchange trip
43:00She's gone missing
43:00I'm going to find her
43:02One of you knows something
43:04You want to find your daughter?
43:06Trust your instincts
43:09Yes, brand new drama
