The Admiral Was a Lady (1950) is an American romantic comedy directed by Albert S. Rogell, starring Edmond O’Brien, Wanda Hendrix, and Rudy Vallée. Set just after World War II, the story follows Jean Madison, a former WAVE officer who becomes entangled with four unemployed ex‑GIs living off their wits and the 52‑20 Club benefits program. Nicknamed “The Admiral,” Jean is swept into their improvised lifestyle of repurposed war‑surplus furniture, odd jobs, and elaborate schemes. Complications arise when a jukebox magnate pressures the men to keep Jean in town long enough to prevent her fiancé from marrying his ex‑wife. The film blends screwball antics with post‑war themes of adjustment, friendship, and unexpected romance.
