00:00The first thing that happened was that the gunman shot his grandmother in the face.
00:09She then contacted police.
00:12The gunman fled and as he was fleeing he had an accident just outside of the elementary school and he
00:17ran into the school.
00:19The gunroom entered into that classroom and the classroom was connected internally to another classroom.
00:27Border Patrol, consolidated ISD officers, police, sheriffs and DPS officers converged on that classroom and a Border Patrol officer killed
00:41the gunman.
00:41So the ability of an 18 year old to buy a long gun has been in place in the state
00:50of Texas for more than 60 years.
00:55And think about during the time over the course of that 60 years, we have not had episodes like this.
01:02And why is it that for the majority of those 60 years, we did not have school shootings?
01:10And why is it that we do now?
01:11Now, what I do know is this, and that is, we as a state, we as a society, need to
01:19do a better job with mental health.
01:21Anybody who shoots somebody else has a mental health challenge, period.
01:29We have, we as a government need to find a way to target that mental health challenge and do something
01:38about it.
01:39There are, quote, real gun laws in Chicago.
01:45There are, quote, real gun laws in New York.
01:50There are real gun laws in California.
01:56I hate to say this, but there are more people who were shot every weekend in Chicago than there are
02:03in schools in Texas.
