00:11Hey guys, brace yourselves. Another amazing horror movie is here. Today's pick is a tense
00:17body horror film, The Substance. If there were a drug that could make you young again,
00:22giving you the perfect body and face, would you dare to try? At the start, a drug is injected
00:27into an egg yolk. It splits into a brand new yolk. So, if this drug were used on a human
00:33body,
00:33what would the effect be? The protagonist, Elizabeth, was a legendary Hollywood superstar
00:39in her youth, a household name. But as time passed, her aging appearance no longer allowed her to hold
00:45on to that superstar title. She was forced to host an aerobics show on a TV station. But even at
00:51a
00:51small station, the boss still looked down on her aging looks. It was Elizabeth's 50th birthday,
00:57Her boss invited her to dinner. She thought he wanted to celebrate, but at the table,
01:02he mercilessly trampled on her self-esteem. You were famous, but now you're too old,
01:08full of wrinkles. The market needs young people. And just like that, Elizabeth was fired.
01:14She watched a fly struggling in a wine glass, mirroring her own current situation. On the way
01:19home, she saw workers removing her own billboard. Distracted, she got into a car accident. Fortunately,
01:26the accident wasn't too serious. After the checkup, the doctor left, leaving only a male
01:32nurse. Elizabeth was devastated. She tried to leave, but the nurse stopped her for further
01:37examination. Elizabeth didn't understand him. After leaving, she accidentally found a USB drive
01:48in her pocket. One side said, The Substance, the other had a phone number. Home at last,
01:54she curiously played the USB. It was a promotional video for a company.
01:59One single injection unlocks your DNA, starting a new cellular division that will release another
02:08version of yourself. This is the Substance. How could a person split into another? She didn't
02:16believe it and threw it in the trash. The station started hiring her replacement. Elizabeth was
02:22deeply depressed. Seeing a young couple nearby, she reminisced about her golden days. Seeing her aging
02:30self in the mirror, she broke down. She retrieved the USB and decided to try. She dialed the phone
02:37number on the USB. The next day, Elizabeth received an express delivery. It was a room keycard labeled
02:59503. She went to the address provided by the man. She placed the card on the sensor. The iron door
03:05opened,
03:06but it got stuck halfway. With no one around, she had to crawl through that hidden small door.
03:11Inside, she saw a row of numbered lockers. She found her locker, number 503. Inside was a package.
03:17Back home, she couldn't wait to open it. The items were arranged in order. First is the activator,
03:23the drug to activate your other self. It can only be used once. Second is the stabilizer for the other
03:29self. It contains two syringes for specific dosages. Third is the food matrix, nutrients to sustain the
03:36matrix body. Finally, the warnings. The matrix and the new body can only last seven days. You must
03:42switch every seven days without exception. Remember, the matrix and the new body are one. Elizabeth went
03:47to the bathroom and injected the activator. After the injection, nothing seemed to change at first.
03:52Looks like another scam, she thought. Suddenly, she felt a wave of dizziness and collapsed.
03:58The split begins. First, the eyes. The eyeball splits into another pupil. Then,
04:03a long incision appears on her back. A new spine and limbs emerge from within.
04:08Elizabeth falls unconscious. Waking up to a brand new, beautiful body. Looking at her young and
04:13beautiful self, she is overjoyed. She sews up the incision on the matrix's back. Then,
04:18she provides nutrients to the matrix body. Elizabeth hasn't fully adapted to the new body yet.
04:27The next morning, she suddenly feels dizzy. Then, her nose begins to bleed. She forgot that the new
04:33body needs the stabilizer. She extracts the fluid from the matrix's spine. She injects it into her
04:38own body. The discomfort disappears instantly. Recalling the recruitment, Elizabeth goes for an
04:44interview. She gives herself a new name, Sue.
04:50I'm Sue.
04:51Sue charms the interviewers immediately. The company boss interviews her personally.
05:00He has never seen such a perfect woman in his life. He promises to launch a fitness show just
05:05for her. Sue is thrilled by the contrast in his treatment. But she must switch bodies every seven
05:10days. She tells the boss she needs to care for her ailing mother. Beauty is a pass, the boss agrees
05:16to anything. Over the next few days, the whole company revolves around Sue. Photo shoots for various
05:21magazine covers. Elizabeth's old billboards are all replaced by Sue. Seven days pass. The first
05:27switchback begins. Elizabeth wakes up in excruciating pain from her back. She looks at Sue lying next to
05:33her, full of envy. She returns to the office to collect her belongings. But the boss has already
05:39packed everything for her. He couldn't wait for Elizabeth to get out. Elizabeth watches his back
05:44with resentment, longing for Sue's return. The next week's nutrients arrive as scheduled. She crawls
05:49through the small door again to collect them. Elizabeth spends her seventh night alone at home.
05:54At dawn, Sue wakes up full of vitality. Seeing the TV and the worn-out sofa Elizabeth used.
06:01Sue feels pure disdain. She begins to loathe the Matrix body. She wants to erase all traces of
06:09Elizabeth from this house. She smashes the bathroom wall with a hammer. She installs a secret door to
06:15hide Elizabeth inside. All posters of Elizabeth are replaced by Sue's. Sue returns to the studio for
06:20her new fitness program. Predictably, the show is a massive success. Sue becomes the golden goose of
06:26the company. Time flies to the seventh day. It's time to switch, but Sue doesn't want to.
06:39Don't eat too fast. Switching? Not yet. She goes out partying with new friends. She brings home a
06:46handsome young man. Seven days have passed, and Sue feels dizzy. She knows her nose is about to bleed
06:51again. She pushes the man away and rushes to the bathroom. But for the sake of her boy toy, Sue
06:57refuses to switch. Defying the rules, she extracts more stabilizer. After the injection, the discomfort
07:03vanishes. What did you do? You seem even more beautiful than before. Sue gets her wish and
07:13spends the night with him. But this violation comes with a heavy price for Elizabeth. When Elizabeth
07:18finally wakes up, the house is a mess. She finds a note left by Sue on the window. To her
07:23horror,
07:23she finds one of her fingers withered and black. It looks like an old witch's finger. She tries to
07:29wash it, but nothing changes. Elizabeth realizes her body is mutating. Now she knows Sue violated the
07:35seven-day rule. She calls the company looking for a solution. But their answer leaves her in utter despair.
07:41What has been used on one side is lost on the other side. There is no going back. Sue's selfishness
07:48infuriates Elizabeth. But she can only resign herself to cleaning the mess. Seeing Sue's beauty
07:54on TV, Elizabeth is consumed by jealousy. Yet, she needs Sue. Only Sue can stand in the spotlight and
08:00be loved by the world. So Elizabeth resigns herself to getting the third week's nutrients. She quickly
08:06looks around, afraid an old acquaintance might see her like this. Suddenly, someone calls Elizabeth's
08:11name. But there's no one. Is it a prank? She runs frantically to a nearby diner. An old man
08:18nearby suddenly strikes up a conversation. The keyword, seven days, makes Elizabeth tense up
08:35immediately. She notices a birthmark on the old man's hand. It looks familiar. She recalls the
08:41male nurse from her car accident. He had the same birthmark. The old man's wallet drops, scattering his
08:47cards on the floor. Elizabeth sees them. At that moment, she realizes the old man is the male nurse,
08:53and he gave her the USB. Knowing the truth, she panics and tries to leave, but he stops her.
08:59Has she started yet? Eating away at you?
09:05Ignoring him, Elizabeth runs away frantically. She accidentally bumps into a man, knocking his
09:11helmet off. He angrily curses at her. Elizabeth then sees his face. It's the boy toy Sue brought
09:16home. Obviously, he couldn't connect this middle-aged woman with the beautiful Sue. After his rant,
09:21he rides off without looking back. Perhaps in that moment, Elizabeth has a brief awakening.
09:26Sue is not her, and everything Sue gains doesn't belong to her either. Back home, she finds a
09:31crumpled piece of paper with a phone number. It belongs to an old classmate. She wants to go on
09:36a date with him to find confidence. He readily agrees. Elizabeth dresses up carefully. Looking
09:42at her exquisite makeup in the mirror, she is very satisfied. But seeing Sue in the secret room,
09:47a sense of inferiority wells up. This feeling peaks when she sees Sue's billboard outside.
09:52She returns to the bathroom. Just a moment ago, she was satisfied with herself. Now,
09:57she sees only flaws. She tries to cover her aging body with a scarf. She alters her makeup,
10:03thinking the blush and lipstick aren't bright enough. Finally, Elizabeth breaks down, ruining
10:08her makeup and hair. The date is ruined. She gives up and binge-eats high-calorie foods she never dared
10:14to eat before to pass her last night. The scene cuts. Sue is filming when a lump suddenly appears on
10:19her butt. She screams. Filming stops. Everyone looks at Sue in confusion. Sue runs to the bathroom
10:26and pushes the lump all the way to her belly button. Shockingly, she pulls a huge chicken
10:51leg out of her belly button. The next second, Sue wakes up. Elizabeth had completed the switch.
10:57It was just a nightmare. Seeing the massive amount of food on the table, Sue is furious.
11:15Sue hangs up angrily. At the company, she finds the set dismantled. Fearing she's been fired,
11:21she goes to the boss's office. Unexpectedly, it's because she's too popular. The boss wants
11:26her to host the grand New Year's Eve show. Sue is ecstatic, but this means she needs more time for
11:31work. Seven days aren't enough. So she begins to extract the stabilizer from Elizabeth without
11:36restraint, ignoring the swollen spine. When Elizabeth wakes up, the entire left side of her body is
11:42deformed and withered. Her hair turns gray. She's a selfish bitch! Would you like to stop?
11:50Stop? You are the Matrix. If you are not satisfied, you can put an end to the experience and go
11:57back
11:57to being just you, on your own. Would you like to stop? Will it go back to the way it
12:05was before?
12:06What has been transferred won't come back. But the physical damage is irreversible now.
12:11She doesn't want to live as a monster. Looking at Sue's beautiful poster,
12:16she feels deeply conflicted. She knows if this continues, Sue will go even further.
12:32Ultimately, Elizabeth chooses not to terminate. At night, she sits on the couch watching TV.
12:38When trying to get up, her aged left leg won't move. She grabs it, using all her strength just
12:43to lift it. The 50-year-old woman, though not as young and beautiful, was still far more radiant
12:48than her peers. Now, she's reduced to an 80-year-old crone. Fear, anger, resentment, and jealousy
12:55consume her entirely. She hates Sue for breaking the rules, hates her own aging. She begins to
13:00frantically retaliate against Sue. She cooks a massive feast, binge-eating like a glutton. Devouring over a
13:06dozen plates of food all by herself. The TV plays Sue's interview. When asked about former top star
13:12Elizabeth. Sue mocks Elizabeth's fitness show is hopelessly outdated.
13:20Furious, Elizabeth mutilates the chicken, tearing out its innards. As if she were tearing into Sue.
13:26When Sue wakes up again, she nearly faints from anger. The entire room is a horrific mess. Egg yolks and
13:32food scraps are scattered everywhere. The TV and windows showing her posters are covered in newspaper.
13:37This pushes Sue over the edge. Her retaliation plunges Elizabeth straight into the abyss.
13:43She grabs all the empty syringes to extract more stabilizer.
13:55Syringe after syringe, Elizabeth becomes her life supply machine. Relying on the extra stabilizer,
14:00Sue happily lives for three months. Tomorrow is the day she hosts the New Year's Eve broadcast.
14:05This will be her ultimate moment of glory. Late at night, Sue realizes the stabilizer is empty.
14:11She tries to extract it as usual, but the liquid turns into muddy, filthy water.
14:46To get the stabilizer, she has to switch with Elizabeth. But tomorrow night is her big New Year's Eve show.
14:53She wants to demand another solution. But collapses the next second from the lack of stabilizer.
14:58She painfully crawls to the bathroom, completing the switch. The young man hears the noise and comes
15:03to check. Elizabeth frantically locks the door. She slowly walks up to the mirror.
15:08She has completely turned into a hunchbacked, grotesque monster.
15:31The young man is scared away by Elizabeth's voice. She stumbles into the living room. She calls the
15:37substance. This time, with no hesitation, she chooses to terminate.
15:41I want to fucking stop! I want to stop!
15:46We'll deliver.
15:50After hanging up, she drags her own poster back into the living room. As if doing so could bring
15:55her back to the past. Daybreak. Elizabeth bundles up to retrieve the termination drug.
16:00She drags Sue out from the hidden room. She begins injecting the termination drug into
16:05Sue's chest. The roses from the young man, the upcoming New Year's Eve broadcast, these
16:10are everything Elizabeth has ever dreamed of. She wants Sue to help her achieve it all.
16:32She tries to resuscitate Sue. But Sue doesn't wake up, instead bleeding from her nose.
16:38She suddenly remembers the switcher tube. She takes it out to initiate the switch.
16:42Sue coughs up blood onto Elizabeth's bald head. And wakes up. Terrifyingly, Elizabeth doesn't
16:48lose consciousness this time. Sue notices the termination syringe on the floor. She realizes
16:53Elizabeth wanted to kill herself. Furious, Sue roars and pounces on Elizabeth. Terrified,
16:59Elizabeth turns and runs. She runs, Sue chases. The survival instinct unlocks unprecedented
17:05potential in Elizabeth. She hides in the bathroom and locks the door. Sue kicks it relentlessly.
17:10Elizabeth tries to block it with a cabinet. But the door is kicked open by Sue. Elizabeth tries
17:16to explain, but before she can speak. Sue grabs her head and smashes it against the mirror,
17:21killing her. After killing Elizabeth, Sue goes to the studio for the New Year's Eve show.
17:26Just as she puts on her dress, she starts coughing violently. She rushes to the bathroom.
17:31She coughs up a tooth. Then another tooth becomes loose. She touches it, and it falls out.
17:36The Matrix is dead. As a split body, she cannot survive either. The boss knocks on the door,
17:42urging her to get ready. Sue suddenly remembers the leftover activator from Elizabeth's first
17:47injection. She plans to go home and get it. As she steps out, she is intercepted by the boss and
17:54shareholders. Luckily, the boss doesn't notice anything wrong with her. A group of showgirls
18:06walks by, and the boss's attention is diverted. Elizabeth thought she would be the center of
18:11attention. But in the eyes of capitalism, she's just one flower among many. Sue quickly enters the
18:17elevator. Her fingernails start falling off. Then her ear drops. She knows time is running out.
18:22She speeds home, grabs the remaining activator, and injects it. She wants to split an even more
18:28perfect version of herself. But she forgot the activator is single-use. And she herself is already
18:33a split body. The cells divide and regenerate. Sue stands up. What is born is not Elizabeth, nor Sue,
18:45but a twisted, grotesque monster. Elizabeth's face and hand are split onto its back. Even looking like
18:51this, Sue hasn't given up on the New Year's Eve show. She puts on the dress, tapes a picture of
18:56Elizabeth's face on as a mask. And goes to the studio. But the hallway is completely empty.
19:01The show is about to start. The oblivious boss is still hyping her up to the shareholders.
19:13The live broadcast begins. The venue is brilliantly lit and bustling. The spotlight hits. She picks up
19:20the microphone. Before she finishes, the paper mask falls off. The crowd screams in terror. People
19:36panic, wanting to shoot the deformed creature. But no one listens. They push her to the ground.
19:43The boy toy charges at her and knocks her head off. But she quickly grows another head. Her arm breaks
19:49off. Blood sprays like a fountain onto the audience. The glamorous venue is dyed blood red.
19:55She walks out. Her body gradually crumbles. Only Elizabeth's face remains. Using her last bit of
20:01strength, she crawls to the Hollywood star bearing her name. Fantasizing about her past glory.
20:06Daybreak. Only a puddle of blood remains on the star. A cleaning cart drives by, easily washing
20:12away the blood. As if Elizabeth, Sue, and this horrific carnage never existed. The movie ends here.
20:18The true horror of this film isn't the deformed monster or the bloody scenes. It's the deep-seated
20:23desires rooted in human nature. It's the cruel conditioning of women by modern society.
20:28Elizabeth's tragedy is not an isolated case. It's the story of countless people kidnapped
20:33by appearance anxiety. Oppressed by ageism and consumed by the lust for fame and wealth.
20:38We are always chasing perfection, always fearing aging. Trying to use a glamorous exterior to cover
20:44up our inner emptiness. Only to realize in the end that we created the very demon that destroys us.
20:49Hopefully, we can all understand that true beauty never lies in a youthful shell.
20:53But in accepting and loving oneself. True value doesn't come from external praise,
20:58but from inner fullness and certainty.
