00:04Tonight, on The Proof Is Out There, Alien Edition.
00:07A mysterious object flies over a military base.
00:10Are we under surveillance?
00:12Nothing, nothing should be coming into that airspace without absolute control.
00:18A Navy pilot captures this strange object on video, and the Defense Department is stumped.
00:23Is it a genuine UFO?
00:25Anything is on the table, but it's definitely unknown and really intriguing.
00:30And a photo taken at a naval base that has baffled experts for nearly 70 years.
00:35Will our experts be able to crack the case?
00:38Some think that this is definitive proof of extraterrestrials.
00:41With UFO reports at an all-time high, we're examining the most compelling evidence caught on camera.
00:47Tonight's focus? UFO sightings reported by military forces around the world.
00:52Our experts will analyze the evidence and then pass a verdict.
00:56So there are some who believe that this alien technology is surveilling humans.
01:02The Proof starts now.
01:11Good evening and welcome to The Proof Is Out There.
01:15For the past decade, American investigative journalist Jeremy Corbell has been at the forefront of UFO reporting.
01:22He's leaked several videos and photos of UFOs captured by the military, which have stumped the experts.
01:28And this next one might be the weirdest one yet.
01:33October 2017.
01:35We're at a U.S. joint operations base somewhere in Iraq.
01:38It's a quiet night at this sensitive military installation.
01:42A targeting system scans the sky for threats.
01:45When it's forward-looking infrared or FLIR camera captures something no one expected.
01:54A jellyfish-like object moves across the sky.
01:58There's an organically shaped mass at the top with what looks like tendrils hanging from it.
02:05Despite its brisk clip, the object maintains an eerily rigid shape, seemingly undisturbed by the air it flies through.
02:12Jeremy Corbell obtained and then released the video to instant headlines.
02:18But this is just a clip.
02:20He says the Department of Defense is withholding the full-length version, which reveals the true extent of the object's
02:27anomalous capabilities.
02:28Every witness that described seeing the full footage describes the object going out over a lake, dropping into the lake
02:37for about 17 minutes, and then shooting off at a 45-degree angle.
02:42That's important, because those alleged capabilities align with the Pentagon's official investigations into what the government calls UAP, unidentified anomalous
02:55phenomena.
02:56One of the observables we had in the Pentagon was transmedium travel, the ability to operate in multiple different domains
03:02and environments.
03:03And if this thing did indeed go underwater, well, it would certainly flip that bill as being transmedium.
03:10Not only that, but it may represent the return of a little-known type of sighting.
03:15I think people would be really surprised to learn that these type of objects have been reported for decades, and
03:22they actually are referred to as jellyfish UFOs.
03:25One of the most famous instances was a 1977 mass sighting over the Soviet city of Petrozovodsk.
03:34This photo captures what witnesses described as a huge, glowing jellyfish with a bright red center.
03:41And this wasn't the only sighting of its kind back in the 1970s.
03:45I had the personal privilege of speaking to an elderly gentleman who described, in Washington, D.C., in the broad
03:52daylight, what appeared to be a luminous jellyfish.
03:56And he said it looked almost like a parachute as it was going up, had this multicolored of red and
04:01black, and it reminded him of molten lava.
04:05But why are these so-called jellyfish making a sudden return five decades later?
04:10Have they gravitated from our nation's capital to our nation's military installations?
04:16That's the concern.
04:18What's so troubling here is that this is a very significant potential threat to the safety and well-being of
04:26the individuals on this military installation.
04:29Imagine if these things can fly now over controlled U.S. military airspace completely anonymously and unchallenged.
04:38Let me be clear. UAP are real.
04:42Advanced technologies, not made by our government or any other government, are monitoring sensitive military installations around the globe.
04:49Here on Proof, we've analyzed several other transmedium UFOs, but none of them looked anything like this, right?
04:56Look at these appendages.
04:58Here and here and here.
05:00They seem to come down from this irregularly shaped mass right there in the center.
05:05And then at the top, there are these nodules there and there and there.
05:10What are they?
05:11Antenna?
05:12I can't make heads or tails of what it is we're actually seeing here.
05:16Maybe our experts can.
05:21Since World War I, camo nets have been used to soften the appearance of harsh edges on everything from helmets
05:28to entire vehicles.
05:29So could this be a drone using that time-tested technique?
05:33You'll see at one point in the video, you can see several people in this area.
05:37You know what a body temperature of a person is.
05:40And so this is not something that's hotter than, you know, 98 degrees.
05:45So when it comes to any types of military machinery, anything like that, that run cold or able to fly
05:52at a cold temperature, really nothing comes to mind.
05:56So is this a genuine UFO?
05:59Certain intel says otherwise.
06:02I reached out to sources within the Pentagon.
06:05They said that this video actually had been explained by analysts.
06:08They didn't unfortunately tell me what that was because it's classified.
06:14But don't worry, we have our own analysts on the case zeroing in on an important clue.
06:21We can see what appears to be a flag very briefly in the video.
06:25And this enables us to estimate the wind speed at approximately 10 miles per hour, which is consistent with the
06:33motion of the object in question.
06:36And so it's possible that this could be a bunch of balloons.
06:41This object does appear to drift with the wind, just like a balloon, except for one key detail.
06:47We never see any change of shape at all.
06:52It seems like the object in the video is too rigid to be a cluster of balloons.
06:58And if this craft really dove into the water, then sped away, as Jeremy Corbell has claimed, how could it
07:05be balloons?
07:06He says it's time to release the rest of this footage.
07:10UFOs is not a matter of belief.
07:12It's true.
07:13So I ask that our American government please release the last bit of this footage, because it is astonishing.
07:27Our verdict, unidentified object.
07:30This thing defied expectations at every turn.
07:34Camouflaged drone?
07:36Too cold.
07:37Balloons in the wind?
07:39Too rigid.
07:40But until we see the full video, we can't call this a genuine UFO.
07:48In 2022, Congress held a formal public hearing on UAPs, the first in more than 50 years.
07:55Unidentified aerial phenomena are a potential national security threat, and they need to be treated that way.
08:02The Pentagon disclosed to lawmakers that it has cataloged more than 400 reports of UAPs, 11 of which were near
08:10misses with aircraft.
08:11They also released this next video, which made headlines across the world.
08:19It's 2021, and a Navy pilot is flying his F-18 fighter jet off the East Coast when reports come
08:24in of a strange object in his airspace.
08:27As the pilot scans the skies, he also takes out his cell phone, and that's when he captures this.
08:34Watch closely.
08:35Did you catch that?
08:36It's not something you'd have seen in Top Gun.
08:38Let's zoom in.
08:39For a split second, what appears to be an unknown spherical metallic object hurtles past the plane.
08:45The U.S. government could not say for certain what is in this video, but it is something physically going
08:52by the window.
08:53Mr. Bray, can you describe what we're looking at?
08:55What are we observing?
08:57It's reflective in this video, somewhat reflective, and it quickly passes by the cockpit of the aircraft.
09:05It is significant that the government is saying that they are in fact real and that they are in fact
09:10unexplained.
09:11But what makes this such a mystery?
09:14Title explains it's that this craft has hallmarks of what UFO investigators call the five observables.
09:21They typically demonstrate anti-gravity lift, they can accelerate very quickly, and they can move at hypersonic speeds without any
09:29kind of exhaust.
09:30They're very hard to see or use some kind of cloaking.
09:33They can move from water to air seamlessly.
09:37This object appears to be flying at mock speeds without any visible means of propulsion.
09:42The question for Congress and the Pentagon, why do the vast majority of these unidentified objects seem to target military
09:48aircraft?
09:49A lot of UAP sightings come from aircraft.
09:53So there are some who believe that this alien technology is surveilling humans and is targeting aircraft as a means
10:01to explore and study the technology here on Earth.
10:06So now the military and the Congress are opening the doors to their investigation of UAPs.
10:12Well, some of them at least.
10:14There are still closed-door sessions happening on what the government is calling more sensitive cases.
10:19But we're going to stay focused on the case at hand.
10:22Because maybe this strange object can be identified.
10:25Let's see what our experts say.
10:31Are we simply seeing another aircraft or even a drone?
10:35We definitely do not see the wings or any of the control surfaces that you should see in a fixed
10:41-wing drone or airplane.
10:43And then in terms of a rotary-wing drone or helicopter, we don't see the rotors.
10:48Cubes and balls don't fly.
10:50So, to me, the only type of objects that are airborne that really could match that description would be balloons.
10:59So could this be a balloon?
11:01The Pentagon claimed the wreckage found at Roswell in 1947 was part of a military operation using high-altitude balloons.
11:09Believers question that explanation.
11:10But there is at least one known balloon designed to function miles above the Earth.
11:15Google had what they call the Google Loon Balloon.
11:18They were testing balloons to be able to provide Internet to people around the world.
11:22The typical fighter jet flies about 50,000 feet above sea level.
11:26The Google Loon Balloon is designed for altitudes around 60,000 to 75,000 feet.
11:30But Hoffman notes two issues.
11:33This object doesn't have the shape and size of a Google Balloon.
11:36And that program ended in January 2021 before this footage was likely taken.
11:42So if it's not a plane or a balloon, does this mean we've got eyes on top-secret technology?
11:48That would be extremely unlikely because this comes from the Office of Naval Intelligence.
11:54And you wouldn't publicize your top-secret technology.
11:58So if it's not ours, is it coming from somewhere further away, like outer space?
12:02It doesn't match our flight physics.
12:05My opinion, anything is on the table until it's not.
12:07Could be an alien.
12:08Who knows?
12:09But it's definitely unknown.
12:10And so it's really intriguing.
12:20Our verdict?
12:22Genuine UFO.
12:24Our experts agree with naval intelligence.
12:26They also have no idea what they're looking at.
12:29The good news?
12:30The Pentagon is now taking this seriously enough
12:33that it's established a special task force to detect, identify, and attribute objects of interest.
12:39We're looking forward to their next report.
12:43The Air Force's Project Blue Book investigated thousands of UFO reports.
12:48Many were explained.
12:50Hundreds weren't.
12:51One rare daytime sighting still raises questions more than 70 years later.
12:57It's a muggy summer morning on July 16th, 1952.
13:02Around 10 a.m., 21-year-old Shel Alpert, a Coast Guard seaman and naval photographer,
13:08is inside his photo lab at the air station in Salem, Massachusetts, cleaning his camera.
13:13Glancing out the window, he suddenly spots strange lights in the sky.
13:17Quickly, he snatches his camera off the desk and makes UFO history.
13:22Four mysterious lights appear in an asymmetrical V formation in the sky above the airfield
13:27to the right of some power plant smokestacks.
13:30The lights don't seem to resemble distinct geometric shapes,
13:34but instead resemble rough blobs of illumination.
13:37The fact that this came from a Navy photographer
13:39only lent to its credibility with the mainstream press at the time.
13:43And when this picture came out, was released,
13:45it definitely hit newspapers around the globe.
13:49The Alpert photos were eventually analyzed as part of the government's massive
13:53Project Blue Book UFO investigations.
13:56We know that there were professors from various universities,
13:58including Harvard, who looked at this picture.
14:01We also know that there were a lot of intelligence agencies and operatives
14:04trying to assess what was going on here.
14:06Of all the Project Blue Book reports between 1947 and 1969,
14:12thousands and thousands and thousands of photographs and reports were submitted.
14:16Only about 700 or so remain, according to the Air Force, unidentified.
14:21This photograph is one of those examples.
14:25It seems the Alpert photos aren't the first UFO sighting to come out of Massachusetts.
14:30In fact, the first recorded UFO sighting in U.S. history occurred in Massachusetts in 1639,
14:37when Governor John Winthrop recorded a sighting in his journal.
14:42According to Winthrop's journal, three locals he'd described as sober, discreet men
14:47spotted a strange light in the night sky as they rode their boat through a marsh.
14:52They claimed it moved with great speed, like an arrow to a neighboring town.
14:56People claim that this is a solid UFO story, and it remains unknown to this day.
15:02Like the Winthrop diaries, the Alpert photos still spark debate.
15:07Some think that this is definitive proof of extraterrestrials,
15:10and others think this is just a smudge on a lens.
15:14The time of day may not seem like such a big deal with the Alpert photos,
15:19but in fact, it radically changes our entire investigation.
15:24You'll often see daytime photos where the sky is so bright it actually looks white.
15:29In this photo, not even close.
15:33I mean, look at this.
15:34The UFOs far exceed the daylight.
15:39Look at that.
15:39But not even the chrome car bumpers are shining as brightly.
15:44So what could possibly be so bright at an already well-lit time of day?
15:49We ask our experts to shine some lights on this mystery.
15:57First, the obvious question.
15:59Could these images simply be everyday objects, like planes or birds reflecting sunlight?
16:03Now, considering that the sun is very, very bright, you might say,
16:07well, could these be objects illuminated by the sun?
16:11Well, we don't see direct sunlight on the cars.
16:14It looks like it's a cloudy day.
16:16So these objects up here, they're exceedingly bright.
16:20Something lit up by the sun looking that bright, I think, is a long shot.
16:25And I don't think that's what we're seeing here.
16:28Could this then be a deliberate camera trick, like double exposure?
16:32Double exposure, where you take two photos without advancing the film,
16:37and you end up with both exposures on the same slide.
16:40If you took a photo of your parking lot, your factory,
16:44and then you took a photo of just these four random bright lights,
16:47but in a dark room, you could potentially get a result like this.
16:51I think that this image is low contrast enough to explain that.
16:55But McCarthy admits that despite the low contrast,
16:59other tip-offs to double exposure seem to be lacking.
17:02One artifact from double exposures is ghosting,
17:06where you see unwanted elements of that second photograph
17:09in the developed final product.
17:11I don't really see too much of that here.
17:15D'Antonio looks to the witness statement for critical info.
17:18He was cleaning his camera and then looked out the window.
17:22So the picture was taken through a window.
17:25That's a very interesting development.
17:27Could that window be the key to solving this decades-old mystery?
17:32It's possible that when he was taking that picture through the window,
17:37he did not notice that there were possibly four lights behind him
17:42reflecting in the window.
17:44I'm thinking that we're looking at something
17:46that was actually reflected in the window.
17:50But could the Air Force's Project Blue Book investigators
17:53really have overlooked such an obvious explanation?
17:56And what's more, McCarthy sees problems with D'Antonio's theory.
18:01He says any reflection would mimic the perspective of the lights,
18:05which appear smaller the further away they are.
18:08But this photo shows the exact opposite.
18:11I don't really know what we're looking at here.
18:13It could be some lights reflected off a window,
18:15or it could be something of supernatural origin.
18:20We don't really know.
18:25Our verdict? Genuine UFO.
18:28We think both our experts presented compelling cases,
18:31but the reflection theory just doesn't hold up,
18:34and we can't think of anything else that would explain these UFOs.
18:38If you can, let us know.
18:41In May 2023, NASA held its first public meeting on UFOs.
18:46One of the videos presented certainly grabbed our attention,
18:49not only for what the government would reveal about it,
18:52but what they wouldn't.
18:552021, an undisclosed military range in the western United States,
18:59a P-3 surveillance aircraft is in the midst of a training mission
19:03when its infrared sensors begin jittering.
19:06Soon, the flight crew sees why.
19:09Before them, three unidentified objects appear on their cameras,
19:13flying equidistant and on the same flight line.
19:15At times, they resemble moving stars traveling westward.
19:19At other times, the UAPs morph into dotted lines.
19:22The trio's movement appears unaffected by a fourth object
19:25that whizzes by below them, flying in the opposite direction.
19:28This video was released and discussed publicly by the leaders of ARO,
19:33the government body set up to investigate what it calls unidentified aerial phenomena.
19:39ARO stands for the All-Domain Anomaly Resolution Office.
19:43And according to its former head, Dr. Sean Kirkpatrick,
19:47only about two to five percent of those reported cases
19:50end up being categorized as anomalous.
19:54The majority of unidentified objects reported to ARO
19:57and in our holdings demonstrate mundane characteristics
20:01of readily explainable sources.
20:04Dr. Kirkpatrick stated that the aircraft in question
20:07that was recording these objects was not able to intercept them.
20:11But given that this video was shot by a P-3 Orion surveillance plane,
20:15we know there is much more data yet to be disclosed.
20:19It's equipped with incredibly high-resolution infrared cameras
20:22and is designed for intelligence gathering.
20:26This aircraft is able to collect significant telemetry and data
20:30and visual data on any given target within its search radius.
20:35But whether or not the P-3 was dispatched
20:38to specifically track these objects, that's unknown.
20:43Now, can we glean anything from where this video took place?
20:47Well, all we were told during the hearing
20:50is that this video was taken on a training mission
20:52in the western United States.
20:54But with more than 30 bases in California alone,
20:57that's not a lot to go on.
20:59So we're calling on our experts to get to the bottom of this.
21:05There is one object I can definitely explain.
21:08On the bottom, you do see an object streak by
21:11that has a definitive contrail.
21:13That fits the profile of a plane,
21:15so that's most likely one of our own aircraft in the sky.
21:19But what about the other three objects,
21:21seemingly moving in unison and without contrails?
21:25My gut initially tells me that these might be satellites.
21:28Starlink trains are becoming more and more common in the night sky
21:32as these satellites are deployed to low-Earth orbit.
21:35Starlink is Elon Musk's network of satellites
21:38that can provide Internet access anywhere on the Earth.
21:41They are launched in groups and travel as a train
21:44until they reach their operating altitude and separate.
21:47And when they're in lower altitude just after sunset,
21:51they shine brightly against the horizon.
21:54So you'd actually see something very similar to this.
21:57Tim McMillan disagrees.
22:00When you think of Starlink satellite,
22:01you would see is a series of a string of dots across the sky
22:05because Starlink is a satellite chain.
22:08It looks like just a string of dots coming across here.
22:11We don't see that here.
22:13Instead, McMillan believes the same object McCarthy saw
22:16closer to the camera is the key.
22:19If you look towards the bottom,
22:20you can see another point of light
22:22that resembles the other three lights.
22:24We actually can see evidence of an exhaust trail or contrail
22:29very consistent with an airplane.
22:32That leads me to believe that what we're looking at here
22:35are likewise also airplanes.
22:38However, the one that passed in front of the camera
22:40where we were able to see the contrail
22:42was just closer to the Orion filming it.
22:45In fact, McMillan believes Arrow wanted this footage released to the public,
22:49specifically to pour some cold water on the heated topic of UAPs.
22:53These are definitely distant commercial airplanes.
22:56Frankly, I think this video was intentionally released
22:59to give people an idea of how aircraft could be misinterpreted
23:03as UFOs or UAP by the Department of Defense.
23:07I absolutely do not believe that the Department of Defense
23:10ever thought these were unidentified aerial phenomena.
23:19Our verdict?
23:20We're going with planes in the distance.
23:22It turns out the team at Arrow also came to that same conclusion.
23:26Although we have to admit,
23:28it is strange they appear to be flying in unison.
23:31But hey, Arrow,
23:33next time you've got a video that can't be explained,
23:36be sure to come to us.
23:38With the establishment of the Pentagon's
23:41All-Domain Anomaly Resolution Office, or Arrow,
23:44it's clear the government is becoming more aware
23:46and worried about UFOs,
23:48especially around military targets like this one.
23:52Take a look.
23:53April 20th, 2021.
23:55It's a quiet, crystal-clear evening in the skies
23:58over a marine base near 29 Palms, California,
24:01in the Mojave Desert,
24:03until multiple reports suddenly come in
24:05of a strange set of lights appearing in the sky.
24:08The base's night-vision cameras capture this.
24:12Five orbs are hovering in a curved formation in the sky.
24:17They each contain a small, bright spot in the center,
24:20surrounded by a glowing aura.
24:22It appears to be showing some type of arc of connected lights.
24:27But is this one object,
24:29or is it a collection of orbs staying in formation?
24:32What's unusual about this sighting
24:34is that the people who reported it
24:36aren't your average bystanders.
24:38Reportedly, over 50 people actually witnessed
24:41this strange phenomenon.
24:43A group of marines who are all very familiar
24:46with different types of aerospace technology,
24:49military aircraft,
24:50yet to them, they were fascinated enough
24:53to say it caught their eye,
24:55and it was truly bizarre.
24:56So if this isn't anything recognized
24:59by local military personnel,
25:01could it be extraterrestrial?
25:03Turns out, it's not the first time
25:05alleged ETs have been reported
25:07near a military base.
25:08In 1967, guards outside
25:11Malmstrom Air Force Base in Montana
25:13reported seeing a strange red light
25:15over the facility.
25:16The light appeared to be
25:18a hovering oval-shaped craft
25:20about 30 to 40 feet in diameter.
25:22Then, without explanation,
25:24one by one,
25:25the nuclear missiles became disarmed.
25:28So, was something similar
25:30happening over 29 Palms?
25:32I think we have enough of a framework there
25:34to say that trained military personnel
25:36found this to be a fascinating object.
25:39And to me, that would merit
25:41further investigation.
25:45Because this video was recorded
25:47by a military infrared camera,
25:49we can presume it hasn't been doctored.
25:52But what is it that we're seeing here?
25:54What could be behind
25:56those big balls of light?
25:58Time to ask our experts
25:59to illuminate us.
26:04From first impression,
26:06you get the idea that these five lights
26:08are connected to a single object.
26:10This could be some type of triangular craft
26:13that has these five lights
26:15and different points.
26:16But I don't see the control surfaces,
26:18the wings.
26:19It's traveling much too slow.
26:21So, we can really easily rule out airplane.
26:24After incidents like those
26:26over other bases like Malmstrom,
26:28is it possible extraterrestrials
26:30really are monitoring
26:32our military capabilities?
26:33Throughout history,
26:34we've had a lot of military bases
26:37that have had UFO reports near them.
26:40And what we've seen
26:42from just all those sheer cases
26:44is it's almost on the scale
26:46of surveillance.
26:47What's curious is these lines
26:49that are going up there,
26:51these would indicate some sort of trail
26:53that's being left behind them.
26:55And you don't see that on UFO reports.
26:59Instead of UFOs,
27:01Macmillan sees a clue
27:02that brings these objects
27:04back down to Earth.
27:05Looking at the smoke and vapor trail
27:08that's being left behind them,
27:09you see that these are actually
27:11independent points of light.
27:13And they appear to be in a free fall,
27:15dependent on gravity.
27:16The fact that these are moving slow
27:18like this leads me to believe
27:20that what we're looking at here
27:21is actually the deployment
27:24of illumination flares
27:26that are providing light
27:27for some type of ground forces
27:30coordinated activity.
27:32The illumination flares,
27:33they're very, very bright,
27:35and they're often,
27:36quite often reported as UFOs.
27:43Our verdict,
27:44this isn't a UFO
27:45attracted to our military.
27:47These are just
27:48illumination flares.
27:50But keep an eye out
27:51for other unexplained objects
27:52around military bases,
27:54just in case the extraterrestrials
27:57are keeping an eye on us.
28:00Italy has long been a hotspot
28:02for UFO sightings,
28:04but one case photographed
28:05by a military pilot
28:07continues to spark debate
28:09nearly four decades later.
28:12It's June 18, 1979.
28:16Pilot Marshal Giancarlo Ciccone
28:18is flying his Fiat G-91
28:21reconnaissance aircraft,
28:23outfitted with four cameras.
28:26They're about to come in handy.
28:28Around 11.30 a.m.,
28:30Ciccone receives a radio transmission
28:32indicating the radar crew
28:34at Estrana Airfield
28:36has detected an unidentified object
28:38at low altitude.
28:40When Ciccone encounters the object,
28:42he uses the aircraft's cameras
28:44to capture some of the most puzzling
28:46UFO photos ever taken.
28:50It's this strange cylindrical-shaped object.
28:55He says it sort of looks like
28:57a semi-squashed cigar.
28:58The sides of it are black.
29:01However, the middle section
29:02and the top are a slightly lighter color,
29:04and it seems to just be floating in the air.
29:07Now, this object is reportedly
29:0920 to 25 feet long
29:11and around 10 feet wide
29:13with a dull, dark surface.
29:15And importantly,
29:16the alleged craft
29:17seems completely unaffected
29:19by the turbulence
29:19thrown from the plane's
29:21formidable jet wash.
29:22When the object begins climbing,
29:25Ciccone pursues,
29:26speeding past it
29:27as he sets up another photo run.
29:29But when he returns,
29:30the object has vanished
29:32into thin air.
29:34Strange, sure,
29:35but this is nothing new for Italy.
29:38Italy has a long history
29:40of UFO reports.
29:41Pentagon whistleblower
29:42David Grush
29:43has recently reiterated
29:45Italian claims
29:45that Mussolini
29:46had a secret UFO program,
29:48which recovered
29:50at least one downed craft.
29:52Grush says that
29:52when the axes fell
29:53to allied forces,
29:54the allies confiscated
29:56the alien craft
29:57and shifted stateside.
29:58Sound incredible?
29:59How about another incident
30:01with a few thousand eyewitnesses?
30:04One of the most famous cases
30:05in Italian UFO history
30:06occurred in 1954.
30:08There was a big soccer match
30:10in Florence,
30:10and a crowd of 10,000 people
30:12looked up
30:13and saw these strange objects
30:15flying over the stadium.
30:16Some accounts claim
30:17the objects dropped
30:18a glitter-like substance,
30:20and others described
30:21the objects as looking like,
30:22you guessed it,
30:23a Cuban cigar.
30:25But as M.J. Benias points out,
30:27this cigar-shaped sighting
30:29has something others may lack.
30:31This case has a lot going for it
30:33from a credibility perspective.
30:35One, you have a fighter pilot
30:37who knows the sky.
30:40He knows what should
30:41and shouldn't be up there.
30:44All pilots are trained
30:45to be aware
30:46of their surroundings
30:47and to be on the lookout
30:48for something unusual.
30:50Plus, the pilots who flew
30:52the Fiat G-91 reconnaissance plane
30:55had very specialized training
30:56to observe, record, and report
30:58with critical detail.
31:00Could we have a better witness?
31:02Let's see how our experts
31:04do with this one.
31:09Nobody's had graphs
31:11that are cylindrical like this,
31:12without wings,
31:13without any typical structures
31:15that we normally see
31:16on aircraft,
31:17but it has positive lift.
31:19There's no propulsion system
31:21on it,
31:22and yet it's up in the air.
31:25One of the most peculiar things
31:26about this object,
31:27it went from being stationary
31:28in midair
31:29to vanishing without a trace.
31:31In order to accelerate
31:32out of this area
31:33that quickly,
31:35it would have to have
31:35some kind of propulsion
31:36that didn't exist in 1979
31:38and certainly doesn't
31:39still exist today.
31:40Some have speculated
31:42it could be
31:43a secret military test craft,
31:45but McCarthy
31:45doesn't see the logic.
31:47You would think
31:47if this was some
31:48secret military craft,
31:49they would have known
31:50what it was
31:50and not sent a fighter pilot
31:51to go document it.
31:52So we turn to another theory
31:54that this object
31:55was a solar balloon.
31:56This actually really closely
31:58resembles a solar balloon.
31:59Solar balloons are made
32:01with black materials
32:02so that they can absorb
32:03the sun's energy
32:04so that they heat up the air
32:05and begin to float.
32:06As Hoffman points out,
32:07the balloon theory
32:08does also explain
32:10the sudden disappearing act.
32:12When it disappeared
32:13off radar,
32:14was that because
32:15the balloon blew up
32:16and disintegrated?
32:18But one piece
32:19of the balloon puzzle
32:20just doesn't fit.
32:21The object's stability
32:23in the face
32:23of Ciccone's roaring jet wash.
32:25In order to not be affected
32:27by the aircraft's turbulence,
32:28this object would have
32:29had to be tethered
32:30from at least
32:30three different locations.
32:32That way it would be
32:33stationary in the sky
32:34and not move at all.
32:36Despite being photographed
32:37from multiple angles,
32:38not a single tether
32:39is visible
32:40in these photographs
32:41of this object.
32:42It's really hard
32:43to say for sure.
32:47Our verdict?
32:48Genuine UFO.
32:50At first glance,
32:52everything about
32:52these pictures
32:53indicates we are looking
32:55at some kind
32:55of massive balloon.
32:57But the pilot's testimony
32:59about the object's
33:00bizarre stability
33:00in the jet wash
33:02poses far more questions
33:04than we have answers for.
33:07Trindadji,
33:08a small volcanic island
33:10located about 700 miles
33:11off the coast of Brazil,
33:13is well known today
33:14as an important nesting spot
33:16for the endangered
33:17green turtle.
33:18But as you'll see
33:19in our next story,
33:20turtles might not be
33:21the only exotic visitors
33:23to this desolate island.
33:26It's high noon
33:27on January 16th,
33:281958.
33:29The Brazilian naval
33:31training ship
33:31Almirante Saldana
33:33is preparing
33:34to depart
33:35Trindadji Island, Brazil.
33:37On board the ship
33:38are a number of sailors
33:40and also scientists
33:41who are going out
33:42on an international
33:43scientific mission.
33:44As the crew members
33:46gather on deck
33:46before leaving,
33:47their attention
33:48is all diverted
33:49to this thing
33:50flying nearby
33:51in the sky.
33:52The crew immediately
33:54summons their esteemed
33:55photographer,
33:56Almirro Barrauna,
33:58and he captures
33:59a series of images
34:00that would become
34:01UFO legend.
34:03A dark gray aerial object
34:05looks to be flying
34:06over the distant mountain.
34:09Zooming in
34:10reveals what appears
34:12to be a saucer-shaped object
34:14with a ring
34:15around its center,
34:16almost resembling
34:17the planet Saturn.
34:19Barrauna claimed
34:20the UFO approached
34:21the island,
34:21flew behind
34:22a mountain peak,
34:23and then turned
34:24back around
34:25the way it came.
34:27One of the witnesses,
34:29Vice Admiral
34:29Paolo de Castro
34:31Moreira de Silva,
34:32said the object
34:33was encircled
34:34by a greenish glow.
34:36The crew all saw
34:37the object glowing
34:38before it turned
34:39towards wished peak,
34:41then it turned
34:42sharply northwest
34:43and disappeared
34:44from view.
34:45The entire encounter
34:46lasted just 20 seconds.
34:49Immediately,
34:50Barrauna's photos
34:51became an international
34:52sensation.
34:53While some were
34:54skeptical of the photographs,
34:56their authenticity
34:56was seemingly bolstered
34:58by multiple investigations.
35:00The photographs
35:00were studied
35:01by the Brazilian Navy's
35:02Aerial Reconsulants Laboratory,
35:04as well as
35:05the Aerophotogrammetric Lab
35:07of Cusero do Sul.
35:09They were deemed
35:10to be authentic,
35:11taken of a real event,
35:12backed up by the
35:13eyewitness testimony
35:14of military experts
35:16and personnel.
35:17They were even confirmed
35:18by the Brazilian president
35:19at the time.
35:21In the years since,
35:22however,
35:23new details revealed
35:24about the incident
35:25have drawn skepticism
35:26to the once bonafide evidence.
35:29Barrauna held
35:29the negatives
35:30away from the Brazilian Navy
35:32for two days
35:33before surrendering them.
35:34He had even cut
35:35some of the photographs
35:36off of the end
35:37of the film roll.
35:38It's unclear
35:39whether he tampered
35:41with the negatives
35:41before handing them over
35:42or whether there was
35:43something else on the film
35:45he didn't want seen.
35:46And in August of 2010,
35:48a Brazilian TV show
35:49claimed he was known
35:50to have created
35:51hoaxed photographs before.
35:53Both in spite of
35:54and because of the controversy,
35:56the incident continues
35:57to be one of Brazil's
35:58most famous UFO encounters.
36:00And that's saying something.
36:03The Brazilian UFO archive
36:05spans 60 years
36:06and has more than 700
36:08documented and researched
36:10UFO cases.
36:11And of all of them,
36:12this is one of the most
36:14legendary cases
36:15in all of Brazil's history.
36:21Brazilian newspapers
36:22ended up printing
36:23Barrauna's photographs.
36:25He took six pictures
36:26in total,
36:27but the alleged saucer
36:28only appeared
36:29in four of them,
36:30supposedly because
36:32he was bumped
36:32by sailors
36:33during the excitement
36:34of the event.
36:36Something tells me
36:37our experts
36:37are just as hyped up
36:39to analyze this case.
36:45I grew up
36:46with this image.
36:47When I was a little kid,
36:49this was my gateway UFO.
36:51First,
36:52D'Antonio addresses
36:53the theory that this is
36:54simply a terrestrial aircraft.
36:56Aircraft at the time
36:57had very specific shapes,
36:59and it doesn't match
37:01any of those configurations
37:03for 1958.
37:06Astrophotographer Andrew McCarthy
37:07reviews another common theory
37:09that this object
37:10is simply a bird.
37:12It's shaped somewhat similarly
37:14to a bird in flight,
37:15but birds actually tend
37:16to absorb more light.
37:18So they would show up
37:20as a shadowy object
37:21against a relatively
37:22bright blue sky.
37:24So in this case,
37:24I think we can safely
37:25rule out it being a bird.
37:28But examining the shadows
37:30further alerts McCarthy
37:31to a detail
37:32he considers suspicious.
37:34When you look
37:35at this object closely,
37:36you see at the top
37:36and bottom of it
37:37are roughly the same brightness.
37:39If this was a flying object,
37:41the top of it
37:41would be illuminated
37:42by the sun
37:43and the bottom
37:43would be in shadow.
37:45Since this object
37:46doesn't seem to obey
37:48the laws of physics,
37:49I have to start looking
37:50at other explanations
37:51of how this managed
37:53to get on film.
37:54So are these legendary photos
37:56a hoax after all?
37:58One theory is that
37:59airbrushing techniques
38:00were used to create
38:01a hoax,
38:02but McCarthy disagrees.
38:03Airbrushing film
38:04is basically like painting
38:05whatever you want
38:06directly into the film negative,
38:09which of course
38:09would be easily detectable
38:11by the Brazilian Navy.
38:12So it may still be a hoax,
38:14just not airbrushed.
38:16If there's no smoking gun,
38:17how do we decide
38:18if it's real or a hoax?
38:20D'Antonio says the answer
38:22is a little more nuanced
38:23than that.
38:24There's no way
38:25to look at this
38:26and definitively say
38:27it's a hoax
38:28or definitively say
38:30it's real
38:31because there's problems
38:32with each of those
38:33determinations.
38:34But if these are a hoax,
38:35you know what I say?
38:37So what?
38:38Why?
38:39Because these are images
38:41that many people
38:42grew up with
38:43and they learned
38:44to be critical thinkers
38:45as a result of them.
38:47My entry into the field
38:48is in part
38:49because of this photo.
38:50If it's hoax,
38:51it brought in
38:52a lot of people
38:53into ufology
38:54and we were better
38:56for it.
39:04Our verdict?
39:05For now,
39:06this remains
39:06a genuine UFO.
39:08All we really know
39:09is that a group
39:10of scientists
39:11claim to have seen
39:12a glowing object
39:13in the sky
39:14at the same time.
39:16We don't think
39:16the negatives
39:17were airbrushed,
39:18but we still can't
39:19explain the anomalous
39:20light and shadow.
39:21This flying object
39:23could be real,
39:24it could be fake,
39:25but until we learn more,
39:27it remains unidentified.
39:30Around the world,
39:32military forces
39:33continue to document
39:34objects that defy
39:36explanation.
39:37If something is out there,
39:39are they friend
39:40or foe?
