Turbulence on the tarmac: These European airports have the worst delays

Although late takeoffs are decreasing, aviation authorities warn that too many travellers are still experiencing delays.

00:00Flights in Europe are still running late and way too often, which airports are the worst offenders.
00:10Late flights across Europe are still an issue. Lisbon, Zurich and Nice top the list
00:15for delayed departures. Lisbon also ranks among the worst for late arrivals,
00:21alongside Athens and Luxembourg. The Portuguese capital had a particularly rough 2025,
00:27with one of the sharpest increases in departure disruptions together with Athens and Nice.
00:33On the flip side, the Norwegian cities of Bergen and Oslo and Sweden-Stockholm are leading the way
00:39on punctuality. And when it comes to improving that rate, Munich, Rome Fiumicino and London Heathrow
00:46made the biggest strides. But just how bad are the delays? According to Eurocontrol, a staggering 30%
00:53of airplanes experience late takeoffs, with an average delay of 15 minutes. Weather-related issues
00:59aside, the organization says the main cause is a shortage of air traffic controllers, as well as
01:06slow technological innovation and slightly deficient airspace design, such as in route planning.
01:12Even though things improved by 4% compared to 2024, Eurocontrol has urged airports and airlines to
01:19tackle system congestion for the summer peak, as air traffic continues to soar, with total flights
01:24now standing at 100.2% of pre-pandemic levels.
