01:14It's going to be fun.
01:15Thank you for watching at home, too.
01:16Let's get to some news.
01:17Well, guys, of course, everyone's still talking about Iran.
01:20And today, the White House said that President Trump attacked Iran
01:23based on a good feeling that they were planning to attack the U.S.
01:28It's historic.
01:29This could be the first war ever launched based on vibes.
01:35Yep, Trump's one step away from telling us his whole strategy is a magic 8-ball.
01:39It's like, ask again later, ask again later.
01:44You know, when most 79-year-olds get a good feeling,
01:47it's just their knees predicting rain.
01:49You know?
01:51That's right.
01:52It's now day 5 of Trump's military operation in Iran.
01:56Remember the good old days when he was just demolishing the White House?
01:58That was...
02:00Yeah, things in Iran are continuing to escalate,
02:03which is surprising, because usually when Trump gets involved,
02:05the escalation stops.
02:17Yeah, Trump got into Iran, but he has no idea how to leave.
02:21It's the same problem he has sitting on a deep couch.
02:25He's like, okay.
02:26Pull my arms on three.
02:28One.
02:30Roll me and pull me.
02:31Roll me.
02:34Trump attacked Iran suddenly and without a clear plan,
02:37so that's two rash decisions he made this week.
02:43Well, people are talking about this.
02:46Admit the ongoing conflict overseas.
02:48Gas prices here in the U.S. are skyrocketing.
02:53It's bad.

03:00I mean, Iran is under attack,
03:01and P. Diddy is still in jail.

21:02The city of angels.
21:04It is the city of angels.
21:06I know, but no one calls it that.
21:07You're here.
21:08But, Jamie.
21:12Any time you're in New York.
21:13Are we going to get into, like, a thing?
21:15No.
21:16The thing is this.
21:17You have an open invitation.
21:19And I want you to come on the show anytime you're in New York.
21:21Open.
21:22I don't care what you have going on.
21:24Anything.
21:25I absolutely adore you.
21:26And everyone on the staff absolutely adore you.
21:29That's very nice of you.
21:30Yes.
21:30I.
21:31Here's what's weird.
21:32I was on, it's weird.
21:34I was on The Tonight Show, my second job in show business.
21:38I was under contract at Universal, and I did a couple shows.
21:41My first job was a Quincy, and then my second job was a Columbo.
21:48And I played a waitress in a diner that he walks in, you know, Jimmy.
21:53Peter Falk.
21:54Peter Falk.
21:54And he walked in with a donut.
21:56And I play a bitchy waitress.
21:58And he walks in with this donut.
22:00And, well, anyway, I was, and he took that clip on the Tonight, no, on The Tonight Show.
22:08Okay.
22:09To promote the show.
22:11So I was on The Tonight Show.
22:13My second job in show business was on The Tonight Show.
22:16Wow.
22:18Yes.
22:19Yes.
22:20What's the scene?
22:21I want to hear what, he walks in with a donut?
22:23Well, he walks in with a donut.
22:24Of course, she says, you can't eat that here.
22:27And he goes, oh, oh, yeah, oh, I'm sorry.
22:31Oh, oh, oh, I'm sorry.
22:35And then he hands me the donut.
22:37Yeah.
22:37And then I glare at him.
22:39Then I leave.
22:40Then they do something about the show.
22:41And then I come back.
22:43And I go, have you decided what you want?
22:45And he goes, oh, oh, I'm sorry.
22:48Oh, I'll have a donut.
22:51And then I glare.
22:53But the thing that's so good about it is that it's a patented glare.
22:57So I've kind of, so here, I'm going to do it to you right now.
23:00All right, yeah.
23:02Ooh, wow.
23:05Wow.
23:06That was, that's fantastic.
23:07Because I could tell that in your, in your brain, you're nothing but love.
23:12For you?
23:13Yes, I do.
23:14Yeah.
23:14You're a very nice man.
23:16You're handsome.
23:17I love this.
23:17You have a very talented group of people.
23:19Yeah.
23:19You're a nice audience.
23:20Yes, you have the best.
23:23This is why I want you to come back every week.
23:25Oh, fine.
23:26So good for my ego.
23:27I want to talk about Scarpetta, by the way.
23:29This is massive.
23:30You and Nicole Kidman?
23:31I know.
23:31It's so fun.
23:32Ooh, it's so good.
23:34It's based on the, the, the popular books.
23:37Oh my gosh.
23:37I don't want to say it's 120 million.
23:39Oh, easily.
23:40120 million books have sold.
23:42But she's written 36 books.
23:43Um, she is a friend of mine.
23:45We are, we are friends.
23:46And you know, one, I'm a producer now.
23:48So one of these, one day I said to her, Hey, what's up with Scarpetta?
23:51Yeah.
23:52And she was like, nothing.
23:53I was like, what do you mean?
23:54She goes, nothing.
23:55I said, okay.
23:56So I, I, uh, I called Jason Blum.
23:59I'm sure you've met Jason Blum.
24:01Yes.
24:01He produced the movie The Lost Bus last year.
24:03That's right.
24:03And now we're producing Scarpetta.
24:04So I brought them to him.
24:06We're now producing the show.
24:07And we were trying to cast the show.
24:10And so then the question of who's going to play Scarpetta.
24:12And this is a true story that no one has ever heard.
24:15And I know you have something here that has to do with it.
24:18So in 2021, I was presenting the Oscar to, it was the in memoriam to Betty White.
24:26I'm sitting at a table, minding my own dang business.
24:30Yeah.
24:30And, uh, I was talking to my friend Heidi, looking up like this.
24:34And she said, Jamie, somebody wants to talk to you.
24:35I said, what do you, what do you mean?
24:37She said, somebody is behind you.
24:40And I turned around like this.
24:42And Nicole Kidman is standing like this.
24:45Oh, yes.
24:46This, just standing behind me in this seat.
24:50And I looked up and I was like, hello.
24:55Hi, Nicole Kidman.
24:56Yeah.
24:57Hello.
24:58And she looked at me, never met her, never seen, I've seen her obviously in her work.
25:03And she looked at me and she said, I see you.
25:08I see what you do and I see how you do it.
25:12And I see what you say and what you care about.
25:15And I want you to know you need to keep doing it.
25:19And you're amazing.
25:24Now, this, this does not happen.
25:28That does not happen.
25:30That doesn't happen.
25:30Like, that doesn't happen.
25:32Wow.
25:33And I just was like, okay.
25:37Wow.
25:38And you're cool.
25:38You're really good too.
25:40And she was nominated for an Oscar that year for Lucille Ball.
25:44And then she walked away.
25:46And I was like, so anyway, so it turns out Nicole has always wanted to play Scarpetta because we had
25:53a meeting with her producing partner.
25:55And so all of a sudden she hears we're producing a show of Scarpetta.
25:59She says, we hear she wants to be in it.
26:02But then, of course, she says to me, and you're producing the show, Jamie.
26:06And I'm like, yes.
26:07She goes, and you're in it.
26:13And I'm like, no, no, no, no, no, no.
26:39Because that's Nicole Kidman.
26:41Here she is.
26:42And this was the picture.
26:45Somebody took a picture of me meeting her at the Oscars.
26:51This is actually a historic moment.
26:52That's real.
26:54Isn't that amazing?
26:55Isn't that crazy?
26:57Isn't that crazy how life works?
26:59That there's a picture of that moment?
27:01Yeah.
27:01I just blew my mind.
27:03Yeah.
27:03Absolutely blew my mind.
27:04What a cast, by the way.
27:06Yeah.
27:06You and Nicole Kidman at Meridian.
27:08Fantastic.
27:08Bobby Cannavale plays Marino.
27:11I know.
27:11I'm telling him.
27:13I know.
27:14I'm like a pit mom.
27:16Yeah, come out of here.
27:17Look at my moves.
27:18He plays Marino.
27:20Ariana DeBose.
27:20She plays my daughter, Lucy.
27:22That's my pal.
27:23And Simon Baker.
27:25Oh, plays.
27:26Wow.
27:27Yeah, he plays Nicole's husband.
27:28He plays Nicole's husband.
27:29Yeah, I was.
27:29And we all live together in a house.
27:32So the way it happened is Lucy's had a tragedy,
27:35and the whole family comes together.
27:37And now these four adults are all now living in this house
27:41that was part of Simon Baker's family legacy.
27:44Yeah.
27:44I want to show everyone a clip.
27:45Here's Jamie Lee Curtis in Scarpetta.
27:47Take a look.
27:48Can you believe this?
27:50No.
27:51Did you know?
27:51Morning.
27:52You gave my husband a job.
27:57Yeah.
27:59Why would you do that, Kay?
28:00Because I needed help.
28:03Well, why him?
28:05Because I'm surrounded by vipers in that office,
28:07and I need someone I can trust.
28:09Yeah.
28:10Can we all remember, please, that this was once my former,
28:13what do you call it, vocation?
28:14What about the private PI business
28:17that you were going to start with Lucy, Peter?
28:19How are you going to start that up
28:21now that you are, what, former, vocating with her?
28:24Yeah.
28:25Cheers.
28:26I mean, cheers.
28:27That's how you do it right there.
28:29Jamie Lee Curtis, everyone.
28:32Scarpetta premieres March 11th on Prime Video.
28:35More tonight's show.
28:36Answer's break.
28:37Stick around.
28:45The Internet's kind of going crazy
28:47because there's rumors that your character may die.
28:52The Internet's not me.
28:54The Internet.
28:55I didn't.
28:55Yeah.
28:56Jimmy, how dare you?
28:57How could you?
29:06Our next guest stars in the very popular series,
29:09Outlander.

29:16on Starz with new episodes every Friday.
29:19Please welcome Sam Heughan.
29:21What are you doing?
29:22I was all right.
29:24Daddy's all right.
29:25You just seem a little weird.
29:29Outlander.
29:31Outlander.
29:32That's right.
29:33That's right.
29:38That's right.
29:43It's a hot show tonight.
29:45It's a hot show.
29:46Oh, come on.
29:46Thank you so much.
29:47Wow.
29:49Sam, welcome back to the show.
29:51We always love it when you're here.
29:53You obviously know how to perform in front of a crowd,
29:56an audience.
29:57You're a theater background.
29:59Yeah, I am.
29:59Yeah.
30:00Yeah, I started in theater.
30:01And actually, I was very lucky.
30:02I got to do a sort of full circle moment
30:04where I went back to my roots.
30:06I just played Macbeth.
30:08I can say it.
30:09There's no...
30:09Oh, yeah, no.
30:10I can't say it.
30:11Superstition around it.
30:12There is a superstition, right?
30:13And Peter, you're not allowed to say the word Macbeth.
30:14I think if you say you've got to, like,
30:15stand up, turn around three times.
30:17Yes.
30:18Touch.
30:18But here you can say it because we're not...
30:19I was Macbeth, so I think I'm all right.
30:22Yeah.
30:22You're all right.
30:23You're all right.
30:23Couldn't you?
30:24But it was cool.
30:24We were at the RSC,
30:26the Royal Shakespeare Company,
30:27in Stratford-upon-Avon,
30:28which was really cool.
30:28Oh, my gosh.
30:29That's a good thing.
30:30Yeah, and we set it in a bar,
30:32in a Scottish bar,
30:33because obviously I'm very at home there.
30:34Yeah.
30:35But it was kind of immersive for the audience
30:37because they were right in amongst it.
30:39So they got, you know,
30:40they got blood, they got sweat,
30:41they got spit on them.
30:42Wow.
30:43It was fantastic.
30:44Oh, my gosh.
30:44They had to wear a poncho.
30:45They came out like...
30:47That was a lot.
30:48That was a lot.
30:48I guess, like going on a ride, a Zoom flume.
30:52You've just stopped filming a new series now.
30:54You just...
30:55I'm just filming right now.
30:57Actually, about two days ago,
30:58I was hanging partially upside down
30:59in an elevator shaft.
31:01I'm doing, like,
31:01this action thriller called Embassy.
31:04It's with an amazing cast.
31:06We've got Anna Kendrick.
31:07Oh.
31:08Incredible.
31:09And the brilliant J.K. Simmons,
31:11who is just...
31:11Oh, he's fantastic.
31:13Oh.
31:14I could stare into that man's eyes all night.
31:16Yeah.
31:16He's quite...
31:17Like yours.
31:17I'm feeling...
31:18I know what you mean.
31:19I'm looking at it right now.
31:20Oh, wow.
31:21You're dreamy.
31:21You are, yeah.
31:23Woo!
31:24Yeah.
31:25But I do want to get into Outland Room
31:27and talk about all that,
31:28but I know that next month
31:30you're going to be the Grand Marshal
31:31for the 2026 New York City
31:33Tartan Day Parade.
31:35Come on.
31:36Come on down.
31:37Come on.
31:38Now, talk to me about
31:39the Tartan Day Parade.
31:41Look at it.
31:41Isn't it fantastic?
31:42It's great.
31:43It's a great day
31:44where we take over.
31:45Scotland takes over.
31:46Yeah.

31:47We're walking down there.
31:49I believe, actually,
31:50we walked past
31:51your offices here.
31:53I believe I have a photo of this.
31:54Way back.
31:54This is you waving
31:55on Sixth Avenue
31:56and here's our marquee,

32:08and it's a real celebration
32:10of Scotland.
32:11I know you always,
32:12you just set a great spokesman
32:15for Scotland
32:16and you have your own whiskey.
32:17Very successful.
32:18Dude, thank you.

32:20That's right.
32:21Sassanac.

32:22Dude, congratulations on this.
32:24And you actually have
32:24a giant distillery as well, right?
32:26We have, yeah.
32:26I was born and raised
32:27in the southwest of Scotland,
32:28a place called Galloway
32:29and it's this most amazing place.
32:31People don't really know
32:32much about it
32:33but there's so much history,
32:34amazing coastline,
32:36castles, lochs,
32:37great, great dark history as well
32:38and we're very close to Ireland.
32:40You can see Ireland.
32:40It's only 12 miles away
32:41across the water there
32:43but we've built
32:44the Galloway distillery there
32:45so we're producing
32:46our own spirits
32:46down in the southwest of Scotland.
32:48So you must come down.
32:48I know you've been to Scotland.
32:50Oh, I had the greatest
32:51experience in Scotland.
32:52I know, I've heard all about it
32:53and I love that place
32:54you went to in Braymar.
32:55It's the greatest hotel
32:56I've ever,
32:57Five Arms.
32:58Five Arms
32:58but also Braymar itself
32:59is where they hold
33:00the Highland Games.
33:01Oh, that place,
33:02it's the most charming place.
33:03It looks like a Hallmark movie.
33:05It is.
33:05Next time you come,
33:06you'll have to...
33:06Like that cute,

33:28place on earth.
33:29Let's talk about
33:31the final season
33:32of Outlander.
33:33I mean...
33:33Do we have to?
33:35I know, dude.
33:36Last time you were here
33:37we were talking about
33:37you were filming it
33:38but now it's kind of
33:39it's in the can.
33:40It's here.
33:40We had our premiere
33:41two nights ago
33:41in New York.
33:42What?
33:43Is anyone there?
33:45Fantastic.
33:46The fans were out
33:47overnight in the freezing cold.
33:48They waited 18 hours.
33:50They're here right now.
33:52Yeah.
33:52They're thawing out.
33:53They're just thawing out
33:53right here.
33:54Yeah, they've been here
33:55frozen.
33:55Right?
33:56Yeah, exactly.

34:05And we've said goodbye.
34:06Quarter of my life,
34:07yes, playing this character.
34:08And the internet's
34:09kind of going crazy
34:10because there's rumors
34:11that your character
34:12may die.
34:15The internet!
34:16Not me!
34:17The internet!
34:19Jimmy, how dare you?
34:20How could you?
34:21No, I mean,
34:21in the trailer,
34:22we do hit,
34:23he gets some information,
34:24he gets a book
34:25from the future
34:25that tells him
34:26that he's going to die
34:27in a battle.
34:28And, yeah,
34:29he's obviously not sure
34:30if this is true or not,
34:31but that is something
34:32that he's certainly
34:33contending with this season.
34:34Oof.
34:35Does he die?
34:35I don't know.
34:36You'll have to tune in
34:36to find out.
34:37I don't know the ending.
34:38You really don't?
34:38I actually don't know the ending.
34:39You shot multiple endings?
34:40We shot multiple endings.
34:41I was there,
34:42but I don't know
34:44how it ends,
34:44so I'll be watching
34:45with you guys.
34:46You'll be watching as well,
34:46yeah.
34:47How are you feeling
34:48that the final season
34:50is here
34:50and what it's done for?
34:51Honestly,
34:52it's done so much for me.
34:53I'm so proud of Scotland,
34:55I'm so proud of the work
34:55we've done.
34:56It's emotional,
34:57it's bittersweet,
34:58it's really hard
34:58to say goodbye
34:59to these amazing people
35:01I've worked with
35:02and to the character,
35:03Jamie, you know.
35:04So, yeah,
35:05it's been an amazing journey
35:07but I'm very, very grateful.
35:08You did a very cool thing
35:09to mark the end
35:10of this series.
35:11You have a collection
35:13from your distillery.
35:14That's right.
35:15We've collaborated
35:15with stars,
35:17Outlander,

35:21It's got a bottle
35:22of our whiskey.
35:24But it's got a wee
35:25treat inside,
35:26not only the whiskey
35:27which does taste delicious
35:28but I've written a letter
35:29to my character,
35:30Jamie,
35:31to say thank you.
35:32So you'll get the letter
35:33inside,
35:33it's wax sealed.
35:34I won't tell you
35:34what's in the letter.
35:36Maybe the invoice
35:37but it's in there
35:39and yes,
35:40you get to read that
35:41while you sip your whiskey.
35:42Well, let's toast
35:43to the final season,
35:45my friend.
35:48You have been to Scotland,
35:49I can tell.
35:51Yeah, exactly.
35:53What do you call
35:53a pour in Scotland?
35:55This is, well,
35:55a dram, I guess.
35:56A dram, yeah, yeah.
35:57This is probably
35:57a large dram.
35:58Yeah, this is what I'm talking about.
35:59That's how we do it in Scotland.
36:00Come on, buddy.
36:01I'm done.
36:01Thank you all.
36:01Cheers.
36:06Smooth as silk.
36:07I want to show a clip.
36:09Here's Sam Heughan
36:09in the final season
36:10of Outlander.
36:11Take a look.
36:13Kids are finally asleep.
36:15I'm both.
36:15I'm still going to believe it.
36:17Sight of you.
36:18Here.
36:19I wasn't even sure
36:20if the letters
36:21would reach you
36:22when we left them
36:22at the bank.
36:24Or as a, well,
36:26an inheritance,
36:27I suppose.
36:28We thought you should
36:29ken what had become of us.
36:31We'd never have dreamed
36:32you'd have used them
36:33to find your way
36:33back to us.
36:36To coming home.
36:38To family.
36:40Slanger.
36:41There you go.
36:43Sam Heughan, everybody.
36:45The final season
36:46of Outlander
36:47premieres March 6th
36:48on Starz
36:49with new episodes
36:50every Friday.
36:51You're the best, bud.
36:52Thank you so much.
36:53More Tonight Show
36:54after the break.
36:55Stick around, everybody.
36:57Woo!
36:58Woo!
36:58Yeah!
36:5821 pound.
37:01You get it.
37:05And you say...
37:12Our next guest
37:13is an Emmy-winning director,
37:15and he is now nominated
37:16for his second Oscar
37:17for his latest documentary,
37:19The Alabama Solution,
37:20which is streaming now
37:21on HBO Max.
37:23Please welcome
37:23Andrew Jarecki.
37:32Thank you, guys.
37:34That's Andrew Jarecki
37:35right there.
37:37Welcome back.
37:42Looking good, bud.
37:43Welcome back to the show.
37:45And you've directed...
37:46I just don't know
37:47how you keep doing this.
37:49You make some
37:50of my favorite documentaries
37:51I've ever seen,
37:52but how do you...
37:54Well, I mean,
37:55Capturing the Freedmans,
37:57The Jinx.
37:58How do you know
37:59when you have a good story?
38:01I think we always
38:02try to go in
38:03without a preconceived notion
38:04of what the story
38:05is going to be.
38:05We just try to see
38:07what we can see.
38:07And in this case,
38:09it was so surprising
38:10because we never expected
38:12to have access
38:13to the Alabama
38:14state prison system.
38:15That's a very secretive system.
38:17Not that different
38:17than when I was making
38:18Capturing the Freedmans
38:19and I thought I was making
38:20a film about professional
38:22children's birthday party
38:23entertainers,
38:23and later it turned out
38:25to be about child molestation
38:27or, you know,
38:28the usual.
38:30Or we, you know,
38:31started out making a film
38:32about Robert Durst.
38:33We didn't know
38:33that he was then going to
38:34sit down for 21 hours
38:36of interviews
38:37that we were going to
38:37do this investigation
38:38and he was going to
38:39get arrested
38:40based on the material
38:41in the film.
38:42Yeah, you don't know
38:42what's going to happen next.
38:43But when I'm watching
38:44the Alabama Solution,
38:46I kind of got that
38:47same kind of vibe
38:48because it starts,
38:49I mean, how did you
38:50choose Alabama
38:52and seeing the corruption
38:54behind the prison system?
38:56You know, I was always
38:56interested in the problems
38:58with incarceration
38:58in America
38:59and I was fascinated
39:02by Alabama,
39:03but it's such a secret
39:04of system.
39:05They don't let the press in.
39:06They don't even really
39:07let the government people
39:08in to see what's going on there.
39:09So, of course,
39:10what's going on there
39:11is not good.
39:12And I was talking to my daughter
39:14who was 14 at the time
39:16and was a big reader
39:16and she was reading a book
39:18by a man
39:18who had been wrongfully convicted
39:20in Alabama.
39:20And she said,
39:21I know you're interested in this.
39:22Maybe we should read it together.
39:24So we read it together
39:25and then we just spontaneously
39:26decided to take a road trip,
39:27kind of father-daughter trip.
39:29We went down there
39:30and we met a man
39:31who was the first
39:31black prison chaplain
39:33in the state of Alabama
39:34and he said,
39:35if you're interested,
39:36why don't you come in?
39:38And I said,
39:38well, I'm a filmmaker.
39:39They're never going to let me
39:40bring cameras in.
39:41And he said,
39:41well, you know,
39:42the Lord works
39:42in mysterious ways
39:43and let's see what happens.
39:45And we ended up
39:45being able to film
39:46for one day
39:48in that prison.
39:50But you go
39:51and it's kind of like a party.
39:53It's like a barbecue almost.
39:55This is the truth.
39:56And then you're there
39:57filming this barbecue
39:59and then a couple
40:01of the incarcerated individuals
40:03go,
40:03of course you're here on this day.
40:05This is not life at all.
40:07Yeah.
40:07This is,
40:08they set you up.
40:09This is not what our life is.
40:10And you go, right?
40:11Yeah.
40:11I mean,
40:12you know,
40:12I said to the men
40:15when we first met them,
40:16my partner Charlotte,
40:17and I,
40:18who were making the film,
40:19we said to them,
40:20you know,
40:21how are you doing?
40:22And they said,
40:22what you're seeing right now
40:24has nothing to do
40:25with our daily life.
40:26You're seeing this
40:27beautiful revival meeting
40:28and they're feeding us food
40:29that we would never see
40:30in a million years.
40:31Our food says not fit
40:32for human consumption
40:33on the packages.
40:34And therefore,
40:36you know,
40:36you need to get into this.
40:37We need you to help.
40:38We need you to look
40:39in that building over there
40:40that you're not allowed to see.
40:41That's a,
40:42that,
40:42that tin building
40:43is where they've had men
40:44in there for,
40:44in solitary confinement
40:46for five years,
40:47individuals.
40:48And so there were
40:49so many disturbing things
40:50that we were seeing.
40:51And then,
40:52of course,
40:52we get a little too nosy
40:53and then they kick us out,
40:55you know,
40:56which I wasn't that surprised by.
40:58You know,
40:58we started,
40:59the warden said to us,
41:00don't talk to the men
41:01when you go inside,
41:02just talk to these two men.
41:04These guys are okay to talk to.
41:05Everyone else is going
41:06to be dangerous and scary.
41:08And of course,
41:08we went in there
41:09and very quickly,
41:10we realized we felt
41:11much more comfortable
41:12with the incarcerated men
41:13than we did with the guards
41:14who were bringing us in.
41:15And then we were worried
41:16that we weren't going
41:17to be able to tell the story.
41:18And then we had
41:19this responsibility
41:19because now people
41:20have told you the story.
41:21Nobody else is going
41:22to get in there.
41:22You've got to dig deeper.
41:23And so we realized
41:25when we got out
41:25that we should start talking
41:27to some people
41:27who were out.
41:28And they said,
41:29you know,
41:29there's a network of leaders,
41:31these brilliant guys inside
41:32who've been managing,
41:34kind of leading
41:34a non-violent protest effort,
41:36doing work strikes
41:37and doing hunger strikes.
41:40And they have access
41:41to contraband cell phones.
41:43And they get these cell phones?
41:45Well, it's funny.
41:46I didn't know
41:46when I first heard about it.
41:48I said, wait,
41:48people in prison have cell phones?
41:49And everybody said,
41:50no, of course
41:51they don't have cell phones.
41:53But then they did.
41:54And I said,
41:55you know,
41:55how do these phones come in?
41:56I was talking to one
41:57of the incarcerated men
41:58on a cell phone.
41:59And I said,
42:00where are these phones
42:00coming from?
42:01And he looked at me
42:02like I was an idiot.
42:03And he said,
42:04you know,
42:04we don't leave here, right?
42:07And I said, yeah.
42:08And he said,
42:10so who leaves
42:11and comes back in every day?
42:13And I said,
42:13the prison guards.
42:14And he said, bingo.
42:15Those are the people
42:16that are bringing in
42:16the cell phones.
42:17The two main guys
42:18in the film
42:18both have life without parole.
42:20So it's not like
42:21they're about to get out.
42:23They're trying to do this
42:24for the other people.
42:24He's in solitary confinement.
42:26Yeah.
42:26And you're talking to him.
42:27Yeah.
42:28Yeah.
42:28When we film,
42:28with the opening of the film,
42:29we start talking
42:30to Robert Earl Council,
42:31who goes by Kinetic Justice.
42:33And it's like,
42:34honestly,
42:34it's like talking to Mandela.
42:36This is a guy
42:36who never should have
42:37been incarcerated.
42:39His crime had to do
42:40with somebody getting shot
42:42when he was in the process
42:44of getting run over
42:45by a car.
42:46So clearly,
42:46that would have been
42:47a self-defense case.
42:48But he's a very,
42:50very powerful speaker
42:51and motivator.
42:52And, you know,
42:53you can read his words
42:54and really feel inspired.
42:56I felt so lucky.
42:57And people say,
42:58well,
42:58these are unlikely heroes.
42:59It's kind of true
43:00that they're unlikely heroes,
43:01but heroes nevertheless,
43:03they're worrying about people
43:05other than themselves.
43:06And they're doing these
43:08extremely risky things
43:10to get the word out.
43:11It's fascinating.
43:11And it's shocking.
43:13But I,
43:15also,
43:15the governor of Alabama
43:16is a pretty big character
43:18in this.
43:19Have you heard from...
43:20Yeah, yeah.
43:21Her name is Kay Ivey.
43:22And she and Steve Marshall,
43:24who's the attorney general,
43:25are kind of presiding
43:26over this very deadly system.
43:28I'd like to believe
43:29they don't know everything
43:30that's happening
43:31in this system,
43:32but one would,
43:33that's a little hard
43:34to imagine.
43:35She didn't react at all
43:37to the film
43:37since it came out
43:38at Sundance.
43:39Really?
43:39They had no comment.
43:41But then,
43:41when the film got nominated
43:43for the Oscar,
43:45she came out with a statement
43:46that was,
43:47we always knew
43:48the Oscars had a low bar.
43:51So, you know,
43:52here she is
43:53getting into fisticuffs
43:54with the Oscars.
43:55So we thought,
43:56well, you know,
43:57in a way,
43:58let's try to
43:58meet this with kindness.
44:00You know,
44:01maybe she doesn't know
44:02what she's doing.
44:03She's called Meemaw.
44:05Maybe there's a grandma
44:06in there somewhere
44:06that would be worried
44:07about this.
44:08And so we reached out
44:10to her
44:11and to Steve Marshall,
44:12the attorney general,
44:13and we said to them,
44:14we'd like you to come
44:15to Los Angeles,
44:16you know,
44:17March 14th,
44:18the day before the Oscars.
44:20We'd like you to watch
44:21the film with us
44:22and with the family members
44:24of some of the people
44:24who have lost
44:25their children in this system.
44:271,500 people have died
44:28in that system
44:29since we started
44:30making the film.
44:31And then we'd like you
44:33to acknowledge the problem
44:35and then come with us
44:36and those families
44:37to the Oscars.
44:38We have not heard back yet,
44:39but we're hopeful.
44:41Wow.
44:43It's amazing
44:44that you did this
44:45and keep doing
44:46what you do.
44:48I want to show a clip.
44:50Here's a look
44:50at Andrew Jarecki's
44:51Oscar-nominated film,
44:53The Alabama Solution.
44:54Take a look.
45:00We're in these
45:01walled-off secret societies.
45:06These are state institutions.
45:10But it's one of the only
45:12state institutions
45:14that the public
45:15or the media
45:16has no access to.
45:19How can a journalist
45:21go into a war zone
45:22but can't go into a prison
45:24in the United States
45:25of America?
45:28Andrew Jarecki, everybody.
45:29The Alabama Solution
45:31is available now
