Veteran Nollywood actress Patience Ozokwor has revealed the shocking reason many actors in the Nigerian film industry still struggle financially.

According to her, unlike their counterparts in developed countries, Nollywood actors do not earn royalties from their work. Instead, they are paid only once for movie appearances — leaving many without long-term income.

She explained that in other industries, actors continue to earn money from their films for years, even after their death, but this system is largely absent in Nollywood.

This revelation sheds light on why many actors are now turning to platforms like YouTube for financial stability and independence.

Is Nollywood due for a major industry reform? 🤔

00:12Hello my people, welcome back to Nollygisty, why Nollywood actors still struggle.
00:21Traditionally, women were only allowed to fish in shallow waters.
00:29Just like you will jump on this opportunity.
00:33It's okay, don't cry.
00:35The only cry I want to get this house is the cry of my grandchild.
00:38Mama, no.
00:39Ah, Nollygist fam, today's gist no be just gist.
00:43Now reality check, veteran Nollywood queen Patience Ozokor aka Mama G has opened up on something many people don't even
00:50think about.
00:51Why are so many Nollywood actors still struggling financially?
00:54And her answer?
00:56Straight.
00:57No filter.
00:59According to her, Nollywood actors are paid only once, just for showing up on set.
01:03After that?
01:04Nothing again.
01:05No extra income.
01:07No long term earnings.
01:08Meanwhile, she compared it to what's happening abroad.
01:11Even the smallest actors over there are earning money daily from past movies through what?
01:15Royalties.
01:16Meaning, even if they're no longer acting or even after they're gone, their work still pays them and even takes
01:22care of their families.
01:23But here in Nigeria, once the shoot ends, the money ends too.
01:28No repeat income.
01:29No residuals.
01:31No backup.
01:32And that's why Mama G dropped this powerful line.
01:34That's why everybody is running to YouTube.
01:37Because actors are now trying to own their content, control their earnings and secure their future.
01:42Now the real question be this.
01:44Is Nollywood due for a major financial structure upgrade?
01:47Or are actors forced to hustle differently just to survive?
01:51Because one thing is clear.
01:53Talent is not the problem.
01:55The system might be.
01:56Drop your thoughts, my people.

02:14He said that the waves did not care whether I was a girl.
