00:03:08Do the teams at the front bias their setups into a race pace knowing that Formula One is in this incredible situation where it is ultra competitive?
00:03:19Do you risk lining up if you're one of the big four teams with a maybe an eighth position with it all to do given how tough it's been to pass on the evidence of the sprint race?
00:03:34And as if by magic, there's the winner of the sprint race.
00:03:38Timing is beautifully right now in the gallery.
00:03:40Lewis Hamilton was emotional yesterday to take a sprint pole.
00:03:44He was delighted to get that first Ferrari win on the board.
00:03:48He did so.
00:03:49Creates a little bit of history.
00:03:50But Lewis Hamilton will want even more.
00:03:53He's got six pole positions around this circuit.
00:03:57He's got six wins.
00:03:58He's now got a sprint win.
00:03:59He's now got a sprint pole.
00:04:01Shanghai, as he said in the press conference afterwards, has been good to him.
00:04:05And what was interesting for me is when he was talking in the press conference afterwards, he said in Melbourne, he turned up to Ferrari and he looked around.
00:04:13He observed and he tried to understand how they operated because in his view, and even when he's 40 years of age, he's saying in his view, there might be something I could learn, something I could understand.
00:04:24He comes into round two.
00:04:26He said he approached it differently.
00:04:27He came in with a list of things that he wanted addressed.
00:04:31He's had a better feel since the first and only practice session.
00:04:34He's taken sprint pole.
00:04:35He's taken the sprint win.
00:04:37And now, Jolyon Palmer, we do it all over again.
00:04:40Reset to zero, 18 minutes on the board, and we find ourselves with Grand Prix qualifying ahead of us.
00:04:47Yeah, and I think reset to zero is the big thing, isn't it, really?
00:04:51The amount of times last year we had someone being a hero in the sprint, and then the race weekend would just go away.
00:04:57Hamilton is one of them.
00:04:58Last year, led the sprint race, didn't win it, but had a great showing and was knocked out in Q1 later that day last year.
00:05:06Daniel Ricciardo in Miami, hero in the sprint.
00:05:09It all went away from him.
00:05:11Max Verstappen in Qatar struggled in the sprint, won the race at a canter, the Grand Prix in the end, from pole position or the front row of the grid.
00:05:19So it can all change.
00:05:21Let's see what's going to unfold here.
00:05:22That's Jolyon Palmer, former Renault Formula One driver, who had a couple of races around this circuit.
00:05:30The first ever Grand Prix held around here was back in 2004, which means also DC's had a couple of races around this circuit as well.
00:05:39Gentlemen, where did it rank in your favourites?
00:05:42Was it at the higher end or the lower end?
00:05:44I'm going to go middle end in that it was challenging in its own way.
00:05:51Long, long corners normally are a little bit frustrating for race drivers because Grand Prix cars, they come alive at high speed.
00:06:02And you want to be steering down a 180 mile an hour corner, making that decision.
00:06:06Do I stay flat?
00:06:07Do I lift?
00:06:08Which you don't really get as you enter turn one here.
00:06:11And then it just gets progressively slower, which means less downforce and more tricky to control the car as you get into turn two.
00:06:18But I just think brilliant to be in China.
00:06:21We're going to have a true world championship.
00:06:24We've got to be in all the major places.
00:06:26Yeah, it was right down the lower end for me, to be honest.
00:06:30I did see that up knowing where he was going as well.
00:06:33That's my fault.
00:06:34I have to say, I wish it had been resurfaced like this for when I was driving though,
00:06:38because I think it would make the track a lot more enjoyable to drive.
00:06:41Smoothing it out, adding a load of grip as well.
00:06:44Not to say it's easy, those long corners are still so difficult and I didn't get on with them.
00:06:50Well, I had two miserable Grand Prix's here, but I'm really pleased to be here commentating now.
00:06:54It's interesting.
00:06:55I think the smoother surface has played a part because the current drivers in the field seem to enjoy this place
00:07:01in a way that maybe others didn't in the past and we'll see what we get here.
00:07:08The car's getting faster, of course, every year.
00:07:09That never hurts.
00:07:11More grip, more power.
00:07:13And a green light at the end of the pit lane.
00:07:15Q1 is underway.
00:07:17Plenty of drivers trying to turn the page on their weekend so far.
00:07:21This is the strange combination of having a race before midday, local time,
00:07:26and then almost reversing back in the weekend to go back to low fuel,
00:07:31one-up pushing to the limits, DC.
00:07:33But isn't this brilliant for the drivers?
00:07:35Because every session has consequence.
00:07:38Fridays when you're working on your programs and everyone's got their own strategy of fuel level,
00:07:43engine modes and the likes, we're all left wondering, well, who's hot, who's not?
00:07:48We know who was quick this morning.
00:07:50We know who in a 19-lap race, all on the same tyres, was able to manage that on that day as best they could.
00:07:59What we don't know is now armed with all that information, who is the fastest one-lap specialist?
00:08:04Because I think qualifying is a lot more important here than maybe you would think,
00:08:09given how wide open this racetrack is.
00:08:12Well, given what we saw earlier on, Hamilton getting that clear air from pole and then commanding the race,
00:08:17I think we've got two things, haven't we?
00:08:19If we just did sprint qualifying yesterday, stopped it at the checkered flag and told them all to go again,
00:08:24I bet we'd have a completely shuffled-up order because of how close it is.
00:08:27On top of that, we've now had the teams being able to change the cars in a couple of hours since the sprint.
00:08:34So everyone can learn their weaknesses, learn what they want to do for the race.
00:08:38So the pack's going to be even more shuffled, I'd have thought.
00:08:42That is the weird thing about Formula One, a sport that prides itself in the highest of tolerances,
00:08:50or the smallest of tolerances, in the highest level of engineering.
00:08:53There's so many variables in putting a lap together.
00:08:57Where are the surface temperature of the tyres? Where are the pressures?
00:09:00Do you have dirty air ahead? Is the wind gusting?
00:09:03You know, these guys are like the Princess and the Pea, just the tiniest of little change.
00:09:09You know, sand under their derriere and the seat, and it changes their whole connection with the car and the racetrack.
00:09:15And not to diminish Hamilton's achievements, because he's been sensational this weekend,
00:09:19and the best of Lewis Hamilton, Doohan.
00:09:23Jack Doohan off the road.
00:09:25The alpine driver who had contact at the hairpin at the end of the sprint race
00:09:30finds himself with a moment off at the start of qualifying.
00:09:34That would have been his first push lap in the session.
00:09:36So that was in the middle sector, I think, for Doohan, through the faster corners.
00:09:40We'll wait for a replay on that.
00:09:41But just finishing the final Hamilton, it was 18,000th that he took pole by over Verstappen.
00:09:46Piastri was third within a tenth.
00:09:48And for all the things that can go right or wrong, it doesn't take much different today.
00:09:53And he's not starting from pole, he can't control the race.
00:09:55And that's what everyone's got to try and get their gear into.
00:09:57Not least this guy, Lando Norris, who could have had a completely different weekend up until this point,
00:10:02had he not locked up at Turn 14.
00:10:04Small mistakes have big consequences now.
00:10:06Yeah, I don't think there's ever a point where people go,
00:10:09well, look, we'll not worry about qualifying, we'll focus on the race.
00:10:14You know, the most extreme version, I guess, would be Monaco, where you focus on qualifying.
00:10:18And then if you manage to be quick enough to be at the front,
00:10:21then that's a pretty good indication you're going to be able to be competitive in the race.
00:10:26But I think you're absolutely right.
00:10:27What we've seen this morning, track position, absolutely key.
00:10:30They will be aware of how difficult it was to keep the tyres alive in dirty air.
00:10:38All the drivers, as DC points out, always aiming for the front row.
00:10:41We have a really nice balance in modern times of Formula One
00:10:45with four teams providing machinery capable of challenging for pole position.
00:10:52Lewis Hamilton has set the early pace.
00:10:54He's driving with supreme confidence right now.
00:10:57And he is in a McLaren sandwich.
00:10:58Oscar Piastri, who missed out on sprint pole by eight hundredths in a second,
00:11:02is ahead of Hamilton.
00:11:04And then it is Norris in third, Gasly in fourth, Ocon in fifth.
00:11:07This is Jack Doohan working his way into the middle part of the lap,
00:11:13out of nine and spinning backwards through ten.
00:11:16Yeah, that just has a sort of look and feel to what we saw in Melbourne.
00:11:20Tyres clearly just not quite there.
00:11:22At the lower speed where the downforce has come off the car,
00:11:26it seems to be rolling onto the grass is not ideal to sort of compound the difficulties.
00:11:32You see Charles III doing a Lando Norris at turn 14.
00:11:36So, Jolene, just explain what it is with these cars in quality
00:11:40as we see him pumping the brake, creating his own EBS.
00:11:43Why does it seem to be this momentum of the rear coming round as the speed comes off
00:11:48that we've seen Melbourne and then now they're with Jack?
00:11:50Well, I think it's even more now because everyone's got to set the car up
00:11:54so it's on the nose, so it's not understeering to try and protect the front tyres.
00:12:00And it was a bit the case in Melbourne.
00:12:01Front tyres were quite vulnerable with the high speed there,
00:12:03but this is another issue here.
00:12:06So, everyone's been thinking about, particularly talking early on about
00:12:09if you set the car up for a race or qualifying,
00:12:12to set the car up for a better race, you have to take load off the front left,
00:12:16which is to induce some more rear instability effectively.
00:12:19You can't have the perfect balance of just more grip everywhere.
00:12:23You have to find a trade-off.
00:12:24And I think that is to have a bit more oversteer,
00:12:27to fight the rear more, maybe over one lap,
00:12:30but then over many laps, it'll sort of even itself out
00:12:32and you won't chew through that front left quite as much.
00:12:35We're joining Verstappen as he goes to set his opening lap time.
00:12:40Tenth down in the first sector.
00:12:42It seems to be, and we saw that certainly in the sprint quality yesterday,
00:12:45not as comfortable rolling into the lower speed corners.
00:12:49Ferrari seemed to be most comfortable there.
00:12:51Middle sector, well, not too bad.
00:12:5527.5, Russell Cump is the fastest person at this phase,
00:12:59so he's about a tenth down on Russell.
00:13:01And speaking of the Brits,
00:13:04Lando Norris has had his time deleted.
00:13:06So that first run in Q1, he went beyond the white line at turn nine,
00:13:11and he has his 1.32.0 deleted.
00:13:14No lap time on the board.
00:13:15Again, story of Norris' weekend.
00:13:18Good pace, just no consistency across the entirety of the lap,
00:13:22and the lap time's in the bin.
00:13:23He's struggling badly to put laps together,
00:13:25so that's the same corner as Jack Doohan had his spin early on,
00:13:29as Verstappen lowers the benchmark again by another tenth.
00:13:32Good final sector for him.
00:13:34Norris more than anyone.
00:13:35We know he's got speed.
00:13:37He's always a threat to go top or going top,
00:13:39but he's making a lot of mistakes.
00:13:42Final corner of the racetrack, Kimi Antonelli.
00:13:45Sensational debut for him one week ago,
00:13:49and dipping a wheel in a corner that has bitten rookies in the past.
00:13:53Yeah.
00:13:54Your voice told that story,
00:13:55even if you weren't watching the actual visuals.
00:13:59It's such a knife edge, isn't it,
00:14:02when you see a Grand Prix car.
00:14:03That was that running beyond track limit.
00:14:06What's a little bit harsh there is,
00:14:07it clearly doesn't give you any performance gain.
00:14:10Yeah, and with the way that the circuits are generally going now,
00:14:13we're getting more and more gravel to the edge of the tracks.
00:14:16We're moving away from just big expanses of asphalt runoff.
00:14:20So we saw it last week as well, didn't we,
00:14:22with people running through the gravel,
00:14:23but actually losing our lap time.
00:14:25We're not needing necessarily to be quite as harsh
00:14:27with the rules on many circuits,
00:14:30but they are the rules.
00:14:31So Norris loses the lap.
00:14:33I have to say it was super marginal,
00:14:34just understeering his way through nine.
00:14:36So exactly the opposite of the issue that Doohan found.
00:14:38So Doohan going again.
00:14:42Sainz trying to find some balance.
00:14:44Isaac Hajar with the fastest middle sector of anyone so far.
00:14:48Driver who had his Formula 1 debut in the sprint race earlier on
00:14:51after failing to start the Australian Grand Prix.
00:14:55Finds himself in fourth place.
00:14:57Doohan completing his first lap,
00:14:59having had the spin on the exit of turn number nine.
00:15:03Tsunoda puts two racing balls, fourth and fifth.
00:15:05So they're all trying to take what they've learned
00:15:08through the session so far this weekend
00:15:11and the 19-lap race that we had earlier.
00:15:13And Doohan sets the 13th fastest time.
00:15:16Sainz was a driver who didn't understand
00:15:18the balance of his Williams earlier on,
00:15:20in sharp contrast to what we've seen with Alex Albin,
00:15:22who has been comfortable behind the wheel drive.
00:15:25He finished 11th earlier on in the sprint race.
00:15:28Good enough to go ahead of Fernando Alonso and into sixth.
00:15:31There's a lot of spotlight on Liam Lawson,
00:15:34a young New Zealander working the wheel through turn 16,
00:15:38not glued to the road in the way that he would want.
00:15:40And he's 15th with first effort.
00:15:42He just looked very tentative into that final corner there.
00:15:45Plenty of coast as he came off the brakes.
00:15:48Couldn't commit to a turn in particularly well.
00:15:50But the important thing for Lawson is just to get a banker lap in
00:15:53and then try and find something more on the second.
00:15:57I have to say, it's not a great banker
00:15:58because he's right on the cusp of being knocked out.
00:16:00And that's not including Leclerc and Norris,
00:16:02who were right at the bottom of the time.
00:16:04So now he is in the bottom five again.
00:16:05So it's not really enough that he's done there.
00:16:07A banker needs to be within a few attempts of Max Verstappen.
00:16:10A second, there isn't a second between any of these drivers.
00:16:15And therefore, if there is a second,
00:16:17he's either had a tentacle issue around the lap
00:16:20or it's frightened money.
00:16:23It's, you know, he's driving fingertips scared
00:16:25and he's not relying on the instincts
00:16:28that's brought him to this point.
00:16:30Yeah, I mean, he needs to get through for his own confidence
00:16:33this session, I think.
00:16:35Having had the learnings of yesterday,
00:16:36the brief learnings of an SQ1,
00:16:39but then the laps in the sprint,
00:16:41he has to be getting through into Q2 this time.
00:16:44And he knows the pressure's there, I think, now.
00:16:46Yeah, look, it's not just about getting through for confidence,
00:16:49it's getting through for career.
00:16:51The spotlight of performance
00:16:53is on these guys every weekend now.
00:16:57Nice lap for Oliver Behrman,
00:16:59moves into seventh position.
00:17:01Hรผlkenberg was a driver who was very happy
00:17:03in the early stages of Friday,
00:17:06lost the pace when others stepped forward in sprint qualifying.
00:17:10He's in eighth at the moment,
00:17:11Alonso is in ninth and tenth.
00:17:13Then we go into the danger zone with Bortoleto,
00:17:15who has been the lead selber
00:17:17in both of the qualifying sessions so far this year.
00:17:19Stroll in 12 minutes,
00:17:20Ocon Casley and Sainz on the bubble.
00:17:22In the drop zone right now,
00:17:24Antonelli, Lawson,
00:17:25Doohan and the driver we're riding on board with.
00:17:28This isn't what you call epic lap at the moment.
00:17:32It's sort of tantalisingly close enough
00:17:34to appear like he's trying to do a lap,
00:17:36but in terms of performance,
00:17:38it's looking like it's growing
00:17:40towards being a second off for Stampton's time.
00:17:44Yeah, losing a lot of time in that first sector,
00:17:47Charles Leclerc,
00:17:47in comparison to Lando Norris,
00:17:48who's just gone through it four tenths of a second quicker
00:17:51with the fastest so far.
00:17:53Only tenth for Charles Leclerc.
00:17:54A lot of time left on the table, though.
00:17:56He's going to want to hurry around to the pits
00:17:57because that's not enough for Leclerc either.
00:17:59Not enough for him at the moment.
00:18:01Same set of tyres.
00:18:01He's going to have to put on a new set of boots
00:18:03and improve on that one.
00:18:05Norris is going better,
00:18:06was going better through the first sector.
00:18:10Still a bit of movement through that final corner.
00:18:13DRS open.
00:18:14Lando Norris looking for a time
00:18:15that can take him through.
00:18:16Sixth for the British driver.
00:18:19And in the background,
00:18:19Antonelli going again
00:18:20because he needs to
00:18:22and he finds the third fastest time.
00:18:23That's exactly what the young Italian teenager needed.
00:18:26It's not a brilliant up for Norris either.
00:18:27We just joined him for the final corner
00:18:29having a bit of a snap through the apex.
00:18:31He dropped a few tenths to Isaac Hadjar
00:18:33in the middle sector.
00:18:34Hadjar is the fastest of all.
00:18:36We might find out why here at turn six.
00:18:40He's running out of road
00:18:41and he's running out of traction
00:18:42coming out of that corner.
00:18:44Yeah, they seem to be comfortable
00:18:45to what I would call overspeed the entry phase
00:18:49and compromise a bit the line on exit.
00:18:51Didn't sound like he lifted
00:18:52as he ran over the curb
00:18:54but it's certainly not ideal for traction.
00:18:56Norris can't be safe with that.
00:18:57I know he's just jumped up into seventh place.
00:18:59Oh, yeah.
00:19:00Sorry, Julian.
00:19:00You saw there.
00:19:01He turned in,
00:19:02lost the rear,
00:19:03opened the steering
00:19:03and big hesitation.
00:19:05Yeah, so that's why he can't feel safe.
00:19:07This is Lawson's lap
00:19:08going a little bit pear-shaped
00:19:10at the second corner there.
00:19:12All part of the first turn, really.
00:19:13One and two together.
00:19:14Slowing it through the right.
00:19:16Then you're scrabbling around
00:19:17on the exit as well.
00:19:18So that's why that's messy
00:19:19and he's 19.
00:19:20Norris in seventh
00:19:21is two tenths inside the drop zone.
00:19:23Yeah, it's so tight.
00:19:25That's modern Formula One.
00:19:26Just when we had that on board with Lawson,
00:19:28everyone wants to see
00:19:30how that first sector should be driven.
00:19:32You just need to go on board
00:19:33with any of Lewis Hamilton's laps.
00:19:35He doesn't fight the car.
00:19:36He doesn't try and over-hustle it.
00:19:39You know, he's got the patience
00:19:40to let the car roll
00:19:42as the speed comes off.
00:19:43And that's key to him
00:19:44being quick through there.
00:19:46Liam Lawson does have a chance.
00:19:47He was noted by race control
00:19:49for failing to slow under yellow flag.
00:19:51He's been cleared of that.
00:19:53No further investigation required.
00:19:55So if he can find a lap time,
00:19:57he will go through.
00:19:57But momentarily,
00:19:59a bit of concern down
00:20:00in the Red Bull garage.
00:20:01The only yellow flags
00:20:02we've had so far
00:20:03have been for Liam Lawson spinning
00:20:05at turns nine and ten.
00:20:07Very slow coast across the line.
00:20:10There are a number of drivers
00:20:12not seeing anything waved
00:20:16out of the commentary box window.
00:20:18But the drivers really backing off
00:20:19on that main straight.
00:20:20So Leclerc was on a new set of tyres
00:20:22when he did his time.
00:20:24It just wasn't a great lap.
00:20:25So he's doing a double call
00:20:26to give himself a chance.
00:20:28I think there's a big threat
00:20:29of a top-line driver going out here
00:20:32with the mess that we're seeing,
00:20:33the tight times.
00:20:34Norris scampering back to the pits,
00:20:36is he?
00:20:36Or is he staying out there?
00:20:38It's tricky for everyone.
00:20:39On board with Hamilton.
00:20:42And is he going to defy
00:20:43what I said about him?
00:20:45There you go.
00:20:46Commentary curse.
00:20:47Any of the laps
00:20:48but that one.
00:20:48That one.
00:20:49It's all right.
00:20:50We'll edit it out.
00:20:51It's fine.
00:20:52You don't need to be
00:20:53a hardcore racer
00:20:54to see oversteer
00:20:56when the gloves appear
00:20:57at the top of the cockpit.
00:21:00That is massive opposite lock.
00:21:02It's a very long first turn.
00:21:05So many drivers
00:21:06getting that snap of oversteer
00:21:07all the way through.
00:21:09Now that's the engineer,
00:21:11Ricky,
00:21:12that you hear on the radio.
00:21:14Once speaking to Carlos Sainz,
00:21:15now speaking to Lewis Hamilton.
00:21:17They were arguing
00:21:18over track position
00:21:18in the background.
00:21:19They're still arguing
00:21:20over track position
00:21:21in the background.
00:21:22Lewis Hamilton,
00:21:23Gabriel Bortoleto,
00:21:24Fernando Alonso as well.
00:21:26Drivers under pressure.
00:21:28Everyone really has
00:21:29to step forward here.
00:21:30The current drop zone
00:21:30is Ocon, Gasly,
00:21:32Sainz, Lawson and Doohan.
00:21:34So Doohan was the lead
00:21:35Alpine in sprint qualifying
00:21:36but Ocon has just not
00:21:38got on well with that
00:21:39Haas at the start of the year.
00:21:40Gasly went out
00:21:42in the first part of qualifying
00:21:43and then seemed much happier
00:21:44in race trim,
00:21:45didn't he, earlier on?
00:21:46But Alpine staring
00:21:47at a double Q1 exit
00:21:50across the weekend.
00:21:51We know about Liam Lawson.
00:21:52Can he find a lap time
00:21:54to change the narrative
00:21:55of his season?
00:21:56And if Carlos Sainz
00:21:57didn't understand
00:21:58the Williams yesterday,
00:21:59he doesn't seem
00:22:00to have the answers.
00:22:02Driver who had
00:22:02good underlying pace
00:22:04over one lap in Melbourne
00:22:05down in 18.
00:22:06George, just so it is clear,
00:22:08we do need this next lap.
00:22:10Yeah, they've got one lap.
00:22:12Everyone has one lap here
00:22:13and Formula One
00:22:15covered all cars
00:22:16by just over a second.
00:22:18Russell, Leclerc and Norris,
00:22:20three of the front runners,
00:22:22have all done a lap
00:22:23on new tyres already.
00:22:23They're on the same tyres
00:22:24and that's why he's being told
00:22:25there by his engineer
00:22:26Marcus Dudley,
00:22:27you've got to do it this lap.
00:22:28They've been going round slowly
00:22:29waiting for the final one,
00:22:31cooling the tyres
00:22:32but they don't have
00:22:33the bite of a new set of tyres.
00:22:35They've already used them.
00:22:37So Verstappen is in the pit, mate.
00:22:39Everyone else is out there
00:22:40either learning
00:22:41or looking over their shoulders.
00:22:43you have to improve your time
00:22:45right now
00:22:46and that means finding a balance
00:22:48around the 16 turns
00:22:49of Shanghai International.
00:22:51The track runs to 3.3 miles,
00:22:535.4 kilometres.
00:22:54Alonso's gone early
00:22:55and you can see
00:22:56how much he's improving.
00:22:58His time is being compared
00:22:59to Max Verstappen right now.
00:23:01The track will take
00:23:02a sizable step forward.
00:23:03Yeah, has everyone
00:23:04started their lap
00:23:06as we just get
00:23:06to the final seconds?
00:23:08Is anyone not going to
00:23:10get across the line?
00:23:12Ocon just crossing the line now.
00:23:14And he needs to
00:23:15because he's in the drop zone
00:23:16and he does not want
00:23:17to have this narrative forming
00:23:19of Oliver Behrman.
00:23:20So Behrman didn't get over the line.
00:23:22Hรผlkenberg finds himself
00:23:23in seventh at the moment.
00:23:25Alonso and Charles Leclerc
00:23:26are pretty similar
00:23:26through the first sector.
00:23:27How does it develop
00:23:28through sector two?
00:23:30Two-time world champion
00:23:31across the line
00:23:31to sixth place.
00:23:33So Behrman's in huge trouble.
00:23:34That's a real error
00:23:35from Haas not getting him out.
00:23:38Charles Leclerc now
00:23:39finds himself
00:23:39into turn 16.
00:23:41He's not looked comfortable
00:23:42all the way through.
00:23:43He's been the second
00:23:44slowest Ferrari
00:23:44all the way through the weekend
00:23:46and now he's second
00:23:47in the order.
00:23:48Lap when it counts
00:23:49for the man from Monaco.
00:23:50Charles Leclerc into second.
00:23:52Yuki Tsunoda
00:23:53goes past our commentary box
00:23:54and he's fastest
00:23:56in a racing bull.
00:23:57Next to George Russell
00:23:58who's dropped down
00:23:59to 14th position
00:24:00told by his engineer
00:24:01that this is the lap
00:24:02that he needs it.
00:24:03He too delivers
00:24:04up to second place.
00:24:06Norris shuffled down to 12th
00:24:07but he's just behind
00:24:08and should be about
00:24:09to leap up the order as well.
00:24:10Hajar goes to the top.
00:24:11The times are shuffling
00:24:12like a pack of cards.
00:24:13Isaac Hajar
00:24:14didn't take the start
00:24:15a week ago.
00:24:16He was momentarily fastest.
00:24:18He's been replaced
00:24:19by Lando Norris
00:24:20at the front.
00:24:21Drivers under pressure
00:24:22found a lap time
00:24:23including Carlos Sainz
00:24:24who improved enormously there
00:24:26when he needed to.
00:24:27His teammate goes
00:24:28into sixth position.
00:24:29In the drop zone
00:24:30and heading out
00:24:30is Gabriel Bortoleto.
00:24:32Gasly is down there.
00:24:33Went out in sprint qualifying one.
00:24:35Doesn't want the same thing again.
00:24:37He's on the brink.
00:24:38He's in 15th.
00:24:39Hamilton is not on the lap here.
00:24:42Finds himself down in 11th.
00:24:44Lawson is down in 19th.
00:24:46Make that 20th.
00:24:47Estevan Ocon finds the time.
00:24:49Gasly improved
00:24:50but he's now demoted again
00:24:52by his old teammate.
00:24:54Behrman didn't get a chance
00:24:55to respond.
00:24:56Doohan goes out.
00:24:57Bortoleto goes out.
00:24:58And once again
00:25:00when you get the stopwatch out
00:25:01inexplicably
00:25:03it's Liam Lawson
00:25:04in the Red Bull
00:25:05who's at the back
00:25:05of the pack.
00:25:07He improved
00:25:08all three sectors.
00:25:09Lawson
00:25:10we saw the end
00:25:11of his first lap
00:25:12on board
00:25:12and it didn't look
00:25:13like he was absolutely
00:25:14on the ragged edge.
00:25:16This was the fighting
00:25:16to get the lap in.
00:25:18This was the fighting
00:25:18to get on with it.
00:25:20And Behrman
00:25:21who was the lead Haas
00:25:22ahead of Estevan Ocon
00:25:23before that first run
00:25:25dropping down
00:25:25to 17th.
00:25:27In the end
00:25:27Pierre Gasly missed out
00:25:28by six hundredths
00:25:29of a second.
00:25:30That's the difference
00:25:31between going through
00:25:32and going out.
00:25:33Yeah.
00:25:33There was the biggest
00:25:34of car parts
00:25:35in the pit lane
00:25:35and in the end
00:25:36if you were way down
00:25:37the end of that line
00:25:38you start running
00:25:39out of options.
00:25:40Not getting across
00:25:41the line
00:25:41before checkered flag
00:25:42that's inexcusable
00:25:44communication
00:25:45between engineer
00:25:46and race driver.
00:25:47Yeah.
00:25:47For a team
00:25:48that had a back row
00:25:49lockout in Melbourne
00:25:50albeit pulled Behrman
00:25:52into the pits
00:25:53to start
00:25:53just need to get
00:25:54the cars on track
00:25:55to be able to do
00:25:56the lap
00:25:56and actually Behrman
00:25:57has been the quicker
00:25:57of the two
00:25:58but he's out.
00:25:59Gasly will be fuming
00:26:00to be out in Q1
00:26:02as well
00:26:02after yesterday.
00:26:03Both Alpine's
00:26:04not making it through.
00:26:05The one I'm just bemused
00:26:07by is Lawson.
00:26:08Yeah.
00:26:08This is a psychologist's
00:26:10textbook scenario
00:26:12to do analysis on.
00:26:14Well part of the reason
00:26:15that he was put in
00:26:16the Red Bull
00:26:16is because of his
00:26:17bullishness
00:26:18and we saw that
00:26:19when he jumped in
00:26:19last year
00:26:20as he looked like
00:26:20he was taking
00:26:21no prisoners
00:26:21in the midfield
00:26:22wheel to wheel
00:26:23with Perez
00:26:23and his feisty
00:26:25aggressive mentality
00:26:26that the Red Bull
00:26:28management thought
00:26:29was going to suit
00:26:30them for that
00:26:30second car
00:26:31but I just
00:26:32can't explain
00:26:33how he could be
00:26:35seven tenths away
00:26:36from Max Verstappen
00:26:38doing one lap
00:26:39on a used tyre
00:26:40in that session.
00:26:41Max didn't have to
00:26:42go back out
00:26:42he was safely through.
00:26:44Last year
00:26:45Liam Lawson
00:26:46outqualified
00:26:476-0
00:26:48by Yuki Tsunoda
00:26:49the driver
00:26:49who is third
00:26:50in that session
00:26:52behind Isaac Hadjar.
00:26:53What a difference
00:26:54six days make.
00:26:57Tears of anguish
00:26:58for Hadjar
00:27:00in Melbourne
00:27:00the second fastest
00:27:02time in Q1
00:27:03in Shanghai.
00:27:06Right the perplexing
00:27:07thing is
00:27:07you've got Hadjar
00:27:08second
00:27:09Tsunoda third
00:27:11so Lawson
00:27:12sitting there
00:27:12in the Red Bull
00:27:13that he was chuffed
00:27:13to get called up to
00:27:14and he must just
00:27:15look at his former
00:27:16team and think
00:27:16what am I doing
00:27:17in this car?
00:27:18He's
00:27:19this is a
00:27:20it's a
00:27:21bad luck
00:27:22you've been promoted
00:27:22it doesn't make
00:27:23any sense
00:27:24or are you
00:27:24thinking he's
00:27:25going to go back
00:27:25to racing bulls
00:27:26and say
00:27:26I'll have that
00:27:27back please.
00:27:29Too stressful
00:27:29guys
00:27:29just a state chill
00:27:31I was confident
00:27:32with the
00:27:32and it just puts
00:27:34too much pressure
00:27:35on us all.
00:27:38Too stressful
00:27:39sums up the
00:27:39weekend so far
00:27:40it's been manic
00:27:41out there
00:27:41with these sprint
00:27:42formats
00:27:43George Russell
00:27:43just giving a note
00:27:44of operation
00:27:45to the team
00:27:45there.
00:27:46Yeah
00:27:46it's difficult
00:27:47when cars
00:27:48are just circulating
00:27:48some of them
00:27:49on outlaps
00:27:49some of them
00:27:50have already done
00:27:50flying laps
00:27:51like Russell
00:27:51he's trying to
00:27:52find his own
00:27:52space
00:27:53and sometimes
00:27:54he can be
00:27:54flapping in the
00:27:55garage
00:27:56the drivers
00:27:56obviously
00:27:56just need
00:27:57a bit of
00:27:57calmness
00:27:58OK
00:27:59let's go to
00:28:00Alex Brundle
00:28:01for a look
00:28:01at the headline
00:28:02of Q1
00:28:03interesting one
00:28:05isn't it
00:28:05gents
00:28:05you've got
00:28:06the RBs
00:28:06up there
00:28:07setting purple
00:28:07sectors
00:28:08up in the
00:28:09top three
00:28:10and then Liam
00:28:10Lawson
00:28:11as you've
00:28:11said
00:28:11really languishing
00:28:12I'm just
00:28:12in the paddock
00:28:13here
00:28:13waiting for the
00:28:14drivers who are
00:28:15out in Q1
00:28:15to rock up
00:28:16but let's have
00:28:17a look
00:28:17through the lap
00:28:18of Lawson
00:28:20and see what
00:28:21we can spot
00:28:21here
00:28:21so Neil and
00:28:22tidy out of
00:28:23the final
00:28:23corner
00:28:241.1
00:28:25seconds
00:28:26adrift
00:28:26and of course
00:28:28out in the
00:28:28first part
00:28:29of qualifying
00:28:30slightly tentative
00:28:31through that
00:28:32first apex
00:28:32and to me
00:28:34it just looks
00:28:34like he's
00:28:35just behind
00:28:36the speed
00:28:38that he needs
00:28:38to be taking
00:28:39through just
00:28:39the attack
00:28:40that he needs
00:28:41to be taking
00:28:41through that
00:28:42first apex
00:28:43of the lap
00:28:44the word
00:28:44you use
00:28:45JP
00:28:45through the
00:28:46final corner
00:28:47was tentative
00:28:48and the whole
00:28:49lap looks
00:28:49tentative
00:28:50again rolling
00:28:51out of a
00:28:51throttle
00:28:51rolling into
00:28:52the brake
00:28:52there's not
00:28:53that brake
00:28:54impact
00:28:54and the
00:28:54chassis
00:28:55thrown forward
00:28:56like you
00:28:57see when
00:28:58Verstappen is
00:28:58attacking that
00:28:59braking zone
00:29:00down at
00:29:00six
00:29:00carries decent
00:29:01speed into
00:29:02seven but
00:29:03then look
00:29:03slightly out of
00:29:04position on
00:29:05his way into
00:29:05turn eight
00:29:06and a bit of
00:29:07an inkling
00:29:07through the
00:29:08middle of eight
00:29:08you see the
00:29:09little shimmy
00:29:09on the steering
00:29:10wheel there
00:29:11he's just not
00:29:12comfortable in the
00:29:13balance
00:29:13as he makes
00:29:14his way through
00:29:14the exit of
00:29:15turn ten
00:29:15there not
00:29:16happy to
00:29:17crank the
00:29:17steering wheel
00:29:18again and
00:29:19really lean on
00:29:20the outside
00:29:21rear tyre but
00:29:22the line is
00:29:23just not quite
00:29:24super sharp for
00:29:26Lawson all the
00:29:27way around the
00:29:27lap and I
00:29:28think it is
00:29:28indicative of a
00:29:29driver who is
00:29:31feeling the
00:29:31pressure firstly
00:29:32but also just
00:29:34doesn't appear to
00:29:35have total
00:29:36confidence every
00:29:37time he turns
00:29:38the steering wheel
00:29:38which we've been
00:29:39talking about it
00:29:39all weekend in
00:29:40these long
00:29:41corners you have
00:29:42to have the
00:29:43confidence that
00:29:43as you load
00:29:44the tyre more
00:29:46and more and
00:29:46more the rear is
00:29:47not going to
00:29:48just snap on
00:29:49you late in
00:29:49the corner this
00:29:50is the final
00:29:50corner that we
00:29:51saw with him
00:29:53when we when we
00:29:54jumped onto his
00:29:54lap and saw him
00:29:55cross the line and
00:29:56as you can see
00:29:57he just again not
00:29:59happy to crank not
00:30:00happy to crank the
00:30:01steering wheel little
00:30:02bit tentative you
00:30:03know and it's a
00:30:04driver who every
00:30:06time he's attacked
00:30:06that car every
00:30:08time he's gone for
00:30:08it there's been an
00:30:10error there and I
00:30:11think it's playing
00:30:11out in that
00:30:12qualifying performance
00:30:13thank you Alex
00:30:18appreciate the
00:30:19analysis there and
00:30:21a poignant graphic
00:30:22and a poignant
00:30:22message on the
00:30:23Aston Martin
00:30:25remembering one of
00:30:26Formula One's great
00:30:27characters Eddie
00:30:28Jordan who passed
00:30:30away earlier in the
00:30:31week
00:30:32Max Verstappen is
00:30:35the sole remaining
00:30:36Red Bull in the
00:30:37session Liam Lawson
00:30:38is finding himself
00:30:40with the slowest
00:30:42time in both
00:30:43sessions as well
00:30:44and the driver
00:30:46from New Zealand
00:30:47who has worked so
00:30:49hard to get to
00:30:50Formula One
00:30:50enduring a really
00:30:52tough time at the
00:30:54moment and
00:30:55searching for
00:30:56answers we talked
00:30:58about how difficult
00:30:59that second Red Bull
00:31:01seat has become
00:31:02at Lawson after
00:31:04just 11 Grand
00:31:06Prix promoted to
00:31:07the senior team
00:31:07given the chance
00:31:08Alex Alvin was
00:31:09given an opportunity
00:31:10after 12 races and
00:31:12had a season and a
00:31:13bit before he was
00:31:14dropped Sergio
00:31:15Perez was brought
00:31:16in Perez obviously
00:31:18winning races with the
00:31:19team he won five
00:31:19Grand Prix with Red
00:31:21Bull but again the
00:31:22performance disappearing
00:31:23new race engineer
00:31:25again for Liam
00:31:27Lawson at the
00:31:28moment the engineering
00:31:29side of the garage and
00:31:31the driver unable to
00:31:32find a way out of Q1
00:31:34this is Q2 we have a
00:31:37green light at the end
00:31:38of the pit lane we
00:31:39have 15 cars remaining
00:31:41the five to four
00:31:42Gasly, Behrman, Behrman
00:31:44was an operational
00:31:44error Doohan makes it
00:31:46two Alpines out in
00:31:48two Q1s across the
00:31:50weekend SQ1 and
00:31:51original qualifying
00:31:53Q1 and then Gabriel
00:31:54Bortoleto first time
00:31:56in his time three
00:31:57sessions with the team
00:31:58he's been the slowest
00:31:59of the Sauber drivers
00:32:00Liam Lawson who we've
00:32:02spoken about
00:32:03looking for answers and
00:32:05looking for space on the
00:32:06racetrack plenty of
00:32:07drivers queued up right
00:32:08now waiting they're all
00:32:09slowly making their way
00:32:10out of the pit
00:32:12so at the end of Q1
00:32:14there the big guns all
00:32:16got through
00:32:16Hamilton was sliding
00:32:18down towards 11th position
00:32:19and there was a point
00:32:20where I wasn't sure if
00:32:21he'd definitely be safe
00:32:22that's how how things
00:32:23can change
00:32:23he he had a
00:32:25similar run at it
00:32:26as everyone else
00:32:27got some laps on the
00:32:28board and now can have a
00:32:29reset look like he was on
00:32:30a scrub set of tires
00:32:31as he was or is about
00:32:33to uh to be released
00:32:35from the garage at
00:32:36Ferrari but it's
00:32:37it's just a scramble
00:32:38isn't it at the end
00:32:39especially when everyone
00:32:39waits for the last
00:32:40moment there
00:32:41now you can reset
00:32:42look at some look at
00:32:43some data make some
00:32:44tweaks to the car
00:32:45and try and collect
00:32:46your thoughts with
00:32:47five five cars out of
00:32:48it already you get a
00:32:49bit more space
00:32:50well I challenge you
00:32:51to name any other
00:32:53championship that the
00:32:54grid is this tight
00:32:55one week championships
00:32:57don't have the grid
00:32:58covered by a second
00:32:59yeah q1 has become
00:33:01unbelievably difficult
00:33:03because the standard
00:33:05required there's no
00:33:07allowance we talked
00:33:09about this a week ago
00:33:10when you used to have
00:33:11pole positions decided
00:33:12by over a second
00:33:13and now we've got the
00:33:14entirety of the grid
00:33:15almost glued together
00:33:17it means that big names
00:33:18are always at risk the
00:33:19same applies for this
00:33:20session as well we've
00:33:21lost one red ball and
00:33:23if we were in many
00:33:25other years we'd expect
00:33:26that to be the case
00:33:26this is red bull's
00:33:27second decade of
00:33:29competition they're
00:33:30celebrating 20 years
00:33:31they've had the
00:33:32championships four
00:33:33drivers championships
00:33:34with sebastian
00:33:35vettel four of them
00:33:35with max Verstappen
00:33:37Verstappen this year
00:33:37trying to be only the
00:33:39second driver in the
00:33:39history of the
00:33:40championship along with
00:33:41michael schumacher to
00:33:41win five in a row
00:33:43but at the moment
00:33:44they can't find a way
00:33:45to get that second
00:33:45red bull into q2
00:33:48yeah it is a mystery
00:33:51and the debate will go
00:33:52on do red bull build
00:33:54a car for one driver
00:33:55and actually saw
00:33:57christian honor being
00:33:58challenged on that this
00:33:59weekend what is it that
00:34:00max wants from a car and
00:34:02he explains that it's just
00:34:03so much front end he
00:34:05asked him more and more
00:34:06and more front end and
00:34:08well as julian knows well
00:34:11a nervous rear is one of
00:34:13the most difficult things
00:34:14to deal with if that's not
00:34:16your thing and it wasn't
00:34:18my thing so you know it
00:34:20just makes it so tricky
00:34:21when you commit at speed to
00:34:23know how far is the
00:34:24rear going to move and
00:34:25with the size of these
00:34:26cars and the momentum that
00:34:29then moves in the role
00:34:30before you actually get that
00:34:31sort of set point you
00:34:33know there's always that
00:34:34point from when you input
00:34:35the steering to the car
00:34:37taking it set and it may
00:34:39only be a few milliseconds but
00:34:42it's the difference between
00:34:43absolute confidence absolute
00:34:45commitment and absolute fear
00:34:47drivers are out there setting
00:34:50their first laps in the
00:34:51session george russell going
00:34:52out early and george russell
00:34:55assuming the role of team
00:34:57leader looking at his
00:34:58teammate first of all to set
00:34:59the time and then russell's
00:35:01a few meters back on the road
00:35:02kimmy antinelli is the first
00:35:05mercedes to cross the line
00:35:0618 year old from northern
00:35:09italy drs open and goes as
00:35:13you would expect with the
00:35:13first push lap ahead of
00:35:14esteban ocon and a direct
00:35:16comparison between rookie and
00:35:18experienced hand and there's
00:35:20two tenths of a second between
00:35:21the two of them on the first
00:35:23runs in q2 but the racing
00:35:25bulls have found a balance
00:35:27haven't they because they're
00:35:27right in the mix when it comes
00:35:30to taking on the mercedes this
00:35:32is visor cam through the
00:35:33final corner let's see what
00:35:34sort of time it is for isaac
00:35:36hajar and it fell away at the
00:35:38end there he'll be
00:35:39disappointed because his
00:35:40teammate going really nicely
00:35:42in the first two sectors of
00:35:44the racetrack yuki sunoda who
00:35:46got points earlier on sixth
00:35:48place for him holding off
00:35:49kimmy antinelli and
00:35:52antinelli was there all race
00:35:54long japanese driver has one
00:35:55corner to go and now he is
00:35:58going to show us the pace of
00:35:59that car and the pace of that
00:36:01car is quicker than one of the
00:36:02mercedes in the field second
00:36:03place for him that great visor
00:36:06cam that we had with hadger
00:36:07also gave us driver
00:36:09disappointment cam head shake
00:36:11as he went across the line
00:36:12saw the time and as you
00:36:13mentioned it fell away just in
00:36:15the end he's a driver that
00:36:16absolutely thrives on his
00:36:19emotion as we saw in the long
00:36:22walk back in melbourne you
00:36:24don't have to guess with isaac
00:36:25hajar you know how he is
00:36:27feeling lando norris has said a
00:36:29scorching timeout there go four
00:36:31tenths of a second faster than
00:36:32oscar piastri and charlotte
00:36:34claire's going to show us what
00:36:35his ferrari has got applying a
00:36:38little bit of opposite lock as
00:36:39he got the power down out of 14
00:36:42driver who was on the back foot in
00:36:44q1 earlier on and he finds himself
00:36:47down in seventh there's hamilton
00:36:50charlotte claire out of the box
00:36:51miles off the benchmark time set by
00:36:54the two mclarens max estafen is
00:36:56going to join this party right now
00:37:00with the third fastest time and he
00:37:02is four tenths of a second off
00:37:03lando norris's best norris's lap is
00:37:05scorching that's the fastest lap
00:37:06ever done around this circuit that
00:37:08he's just pumped in for us it's in
00:37:10all three sectors he's hooked it up
00:37:12and we just see if he can keep it
00:37:14hooked up now for the rest because
00:37:15that pace looks unmatchable at this
00:37:18stage the the caveat is russell
00:37:21wasn't on a new tie there and nor were
00:37:23the two ferrari so that's why they're
00:37:25a little bit further down than the
00:37:26rest but norris compared to piastri
00:37:29and verstappen a long way clear and
00:37:31finally puts a lot together i guess
00:37:33unsurprisingly hamilton with that
00:37:35confidence coming from the sprint
00:37:38victory again being lead in terms of
00:37:41pace at ferrari look at no point this
00:37:44this weekend through free practice or
00:37:46anything else has really looped on top
00:37:49of his ferrari chasing a balance and
00:37:52chasing an understanding incredibly
00:37:55strong qualifier usually 26 times he's
00:37:58taken pole position in his formula one
00:38:00career second most in team history only
00:38:03behind michael schumacher as they are
00:38:07say yeah finding themselves heading back
00:38:10to the pit lane so the order for you
00:38:13lando norris ahead of oscar piastri
00:38:14mclaren 1-2 then it's verstappen russell
00:38:18sunoda antonelli hamilton alban again
00:38:21alban in the top 10 charles claire again
00:38:24chasing the balance but as jolien
00:38:25pointed out for you no fresh tires for
00:38:28the ferraris so we've got an incomplete
00:38:29picture which finishes with hulkenberg in
00:38:3110th and it's stroll in 11th ocon hajar who
00:38:34had a mistake on his lap time fell away so
00:38:36he knows what his teammate is paid for and
00:38:39he knows what he did in q1 when he was
00:38:41ahead with the second fastest time last two
00:38:43spanish pair of alonso and science
00:38:46hamilton then stranded in the pit lane
00:38:48because he's just been pushed onto the
00:38:49way bridge
00:38:50the dreaded way bridge random can be
00:38:53pulled in at any time during the entire
00:38:55weekend but sometimes it can upset your
00:38:57run plan
00:38:58absolutely it's frustrating of course
00:39:01it's just a necessity of the fia to make
00:39:04sure that cars are running legal at all
00:39:05points during qualifying and of course
00:39:08they get to do that after the race but
00:39:10as a driver you want to get back to the
00:39:12test download with your engineers have the
00:39:15tire pressures checked as well all of these
00:39:17little touch points that just give you the
00:39:18confidence you're building the session the
00:39:20way you would like it to be and actually
00:39:22that didn't take too long for hamilton that
00:39:23was pretty efficient there from uh from fia and
00:39:26the mechanics to to get him fired up but it's
00:39:29also not ideal that he gets pulled in when he
00:39:31needs to do a lap on the next one it's
00:39:33easier if you're norris and you've just done a
00:39:34great lap to just relax a little bit you know
00:39:36you're safely through whereas lewis will want to
00:39:38be doing what nika holkenberg's doing and looking at a printout of how he can find a bit more time and uh and and go quicker now needs to unlock that little bit we know he can do it because he's done it already this weekend but the pressure of one lap coming up for both ferraris
00:39:52it's a wonderful pressure though it's the magic moment you do not get a faster
00:39:59opportunity as you mentioned some have been out on scrub tires as they're just
00:40:03finding their way into this middle part of qualifying but when we get to the final
00:40:09top 10 shootout there is no more beautiful feeling on a racetrack
00:40:14few tires max engine track as good as it's going to get
00:40:20that that's not a pressure that's a pleasure
00:40:23we're going to see some more flying laps now
00:40:27these are the fastest ever laps of shanghai international circuit
00:40:31a venue used for the first time in form one history back in 2004
00:40:36a new surface it is grippy it is fast it is smooth
00:40:40and it's great for us because trackside we're able to see the drivers
00:40:44on the edge i feel like we've been here before early in the weekend with lando norris miles
00:40:49clear of everyone it's just can he carry it all the way through the session now and deliver the
00:40:55underlying pace story of mclaren's weekend clearly that car is fast but it's been all over the road
00:41:01and difficult to contain for the three miles of shanghai yeah i think that the drivers talk now about in
00:41:07this modern era formula one a lot of aero performance coming from the underside of the car
00:41:13getting it in the window where you've got the tires optimized the surface temperature
00:41:18where you end up with your pressures depending what you've decided for your outlaps
00:41:23there's so many variables that if you do hit that sweet spot
00:41:26you then get what is a sizable lap time difference at this point i don't expect it to be as much once
00:41:34it all comes out in the wash at the end but this is a great confidence inspiring opening lap from
00:41:41norris there and piastri is probably sitting there looking at the data going okay i can see where that
00:41:48performance is coming from and there's probably somewhere on the lap where he's thinking i'm not
00:41:52sure i can do that he's gone back out on a scrub tire now piastri so he's not gone for a new tire
00:41:57as we jumped on board with him there cruising around an outlet because the temperatures are so
00:42:01hot now keeping those tires cool and the outlap is key but he obviously wants to try and figure out
00:42:05how he can do something different from the cockpit before q3 the mclaren's should be safe with what
00:42:10they've done unlike plenty of the others towards the bottom end and antonelli like he was starting that
00:42:15lap but will bail and go for another one had a moment in the first turn and gets out of the way because
00:42:20his teammate is about to charge through another driver getting to the end of the first turn having
00:42:25the correction of oversteer and knowing the lap is gone bail out call the tires recharge and go
00:42:31again antonelli currently finds himself in sixth position but with the ferraris yet to bolt on
00:42:37a new set of soft tires george russell heading through the fast up through seven and eight
00:42:43yeah just listening on board they're absolutely flat as he went through the left of seven
00:42:48clicks it down the gears and as the speed comes off the car becomes a bit more tricky
00:42:53to position and manage but uh definitely as he uh done 24-2 in that first sector which is
00:43:01a little bit three tenths down um so more performance to come and uh likewise in the middle sector so this
00:43:07is still really about feeling where the car is at the magic is stuck okay so maybe that is what
00:43:17happened to uh to antonelli then the uh the old brake magic brake magic i haven't heard that for a
00:43:22couple of years button on the steering wheel affects the temperatures and affects your performance
00:43:29certainly through a turn like turn one from turn one to turn 16 george russell needing a lot of time
00:43:35to comfortably book his place in the next part of qualifying he's on for about second after two
00:43:41thirds of the lap time falling away he remains in fourth lewis hamilton fastest middle sector of
00:43:47anyone so far everyone has had a chance to reset the cars park ferme has been lifted they've had a
00:43:55chance to change to implement what they learned in sprint qualifying and the sprint race earlier on
00:43:59and hamilton is still rapid yeah but considering he's done the fastest middle sector it shows what he's
00:44:03lost in the first and he was fighting the car coming through 12 and 13 as well where leclair is
00:44:08right now on the left-hand side of your picture hamilton with two corners to go picking it up and this
00:44:14will be a handy improvement still for him to launch him towards the sharp end charlotte claire down in
00:44:19tenth position driver at risk as we progress from q2 to q3 hamilton up to sixth place again not a lot being
00:44:29found in that third sector at the moment charlotte claire is pushing on joe guanyu is the third
00:44:34driver for ferrari this year he's been cheered all the way around this racetrack with fan appearances
00:44:38and charlotte claire goes ahead of lewis hamilton up to sixth place both of the ferraris looking like
00:44:44he'd run out of grip come the final this final corner here that we join ocon there was no obvious
00:44:50signs of any issue under braking at the hairpin maybe a bit squirterly as you mentioned julian through
00:44:5511 12 13 ocon's giving himself a chance haja gets the lap that he needs he's up to fourth the ferraris are
00:45:03not safe hamilton's dropping down with that lap and so many drivers further back are looking to improve
00:45:08if we're looking at three of them on the bottom of the times this is antonelli ocon's in the drop zone
00:45:12so is hulkenberg the aston martin pair of stroll and alonso and signs hoping for a lap that just
00:45:18works in a way that no other has so far this weekend antonelli felt the need to go again after a mistake
00:45:24through turn number one had to bail out of it can he get near his teammate can he get anywhere close no
00:45:30he's at risk alex albin is currently in 10th but antonelli is vulnerable in ninth position
00:45:35fernando alonso is rotating his aston martin through the final corner not enough pace though the astons are out
00:45:42thirteenth and fourteenth and now signs is across the line and he still can't find a tune from that
00:45:49williams his teammate has managed to get into 10th position but he is out in the second part of
00:45:55qualifying ocon hulkenberg alonso ahead of stroll and the man you are looking at carlos signs the five
00:46:03to fall alex albin makes it through kimmy antonelli is ahead of him the ferraris didn't have great
00:46:10overall pace but they booked their place in q3 and this is on board with the man who finished sixth in
00:46:16the formula two championship last year yeah carried massive amount of speed on the first phase and then
00:46:21as you can see the ripples the bumps later in one blending into two just couldn't hold the car and
00:46:27started correcting that was the first lap with antonelli wasn't it is then he went again and was
00:46:32actually just five thousandths away from the best lap that he's that he's done that's been enough to
00:46:37take him through that is precisely the difference between him and albin who snuck through once again
00:46:42in 10th position and the ferraris hamilton pole yesterday of course fastest middle sector of
00:46:48anyone sneaking through by a tenth okay well that doesn't really we need to get on to alonso's
00:47:01engineer to ask him to expand on that we what was crazy was it traffic was it uh just generally getting
00:47:06everything into the window and well as we go on board now it's albin a lot of questions going into
00:47:14the year would he stand up to be challenged by a driver that's won grand prix and on the basis of
00:47:21well two qualifying sessions so far so good he was really relishing having a chance to prove himself
00:47:27up against a four-time grand prix winner he's done so much work behind the scenes to evaluate where he
00:47:34needs to improve he says that off track he's seen signs come into that team and been reminded that you
00:47:40need to keep on challenging that you don't just accept that how it is is how it is and he's been
00:47:45very motivated by signs appearance signs is still trying to unlock the balance of that car trying to
00:47:50understand how the williams operates compared to the ferrari but albin has had a fire lit underneath
00:47:55him he's in q3 again yeah i love your turn of phrase when you go he's trying to find a tune on that
00:48:01williams i'll i'll try not steal that too often it's a it's a great expression where in the same way
00:48:07the great musicians find something with their yeah he's just stuck in a whisker
00:48:12go on go on
00:48:15yeah come on three hundredths is a luxury margin on this weekend yeah punching the air as well
00:48:23it doesn't matter what the time difference is as long as it's in your favor so he gets through and
00:48:29he's delighted to do so but how about the turn of pace from the racing bulls isaac hajar said in the
00:48:35thursday press conference he was so relieved this was a back-to-back he said the most important
00:48:39thing for him is he got another opportunity after he was so disconsolate in melbourne he's turned up
00:48:46and again after two parts of qualifying he's the lead racing bull yeah that car is clearly working
00:48:53well and what was painful to watch in melbourne that emotional long walk back not the only driver
00:49:00to make a mistake there much more experienced guys dropped it during that challenging grand prix but
00:49:06he's bounced back uh clearly felt the change oh could have pushed more
00:49:14well that's the sort of thing you want to hear a driver that realizes there's more potential there's
00:49:20more opportunity well we have our top 10 order set before we get to q3 let's get some analysis with alex
00:49:27brundle nice to hear the fight from uh from last year's uh formula two championship runner-up we've
00:49:33had the three rookies that are out in q1 uh through the pen lawson obviously looking dejected doing a
00:49:39bit more calm they know the situation uh down at alpine with the rear wing change they have to make
00:49:44and at least gasly is more experienced teammate was out in q1 as well portoletto looking angry you've
00:49:50got to remember that that's the first time in his grand prix career he's actually found himself out
00:49:55in the first part of qualifying agree with you guys what a session it's been for rb so far
00:50:01sonoda actually ends that session fastest uh in the middle sector and i want to take a look at it
00:50:08and just see where that car is plugged in if we can because i'm sure it's it's pretty impressive
00:50:13norris fastest in the first in the final down towards turn six then car follows uh the steering
00:50:19wheel nicely for sonoda all looking calm at the moment and i think that they're keeping the tire in
00:50:24through this middle sector we saw a couple of onboards from the ferrari where they're really
00:50:28starting to overheat the rear tire as they head in towards turn nine and ten lovely balance there for
00:50:34sonoda follows the steering wheel down towards uh the apex at nine and then takes off see how he can
00:50:38lean on the rear tire out through 10 and then can be aggressive on the brakes down towards uh 11 and 12
00:50:46and then sonoda uh making his way through the exit so brilliant stuff from them that really really
00:50:52boding well not only for qualifying performance with both cars through to q3 but also to maintain
00:50:58the performance of the tire through a race distance because of course sector two where all the corners
00:51:03are no slip means no tired egg no tired egg means speed on grand prix sunday
00:51:08it is time for the third part of qualifying and it has been a weekend of fine margins we're getting
00:51:19used to that in modern times in formula one but intriguingly it is max verstappen instantly out to
00:51:27queue up first sometimes he wants to be last sometimes he wants to be first there's carlos sainz
00:51:32who will not make q3 in this round of the championship the second at 24 in 2025 and he
00:51:41watches his teammate take his place going through and punching the air tells you all you need to know
00:51:47about how motivated alex alvin is and that's the sort of shot that you see ending up in drive to
00:51:53survive isn't it when you see a shot of carlos sainz watching on with his teammates still taking part
00:51:58when he's off to be weighed yeah it is exactly as you see there that your teammate is the great
00:52:04misnomer his success is your failure and vice versa and you can have and you hope to have a good working
00:52:11relationship but do not be under any illusions that there's pleasure to be had in being the second
00:52:18driver in the team that p15 for carlos sainz that is his lowest ever start around this circuit he's raced
00:52:25here seven times before in shanghai a reference for you mclaren have not scored a top three start
00:52:31in grand prix qualifying here since lewis hamilton left the team at the end of 2012 this time last
00:52:37year they hadn't brought the update that transformed their season that won them the constructors
00:52:43championship by the time that we got to abu dhabi we have 12 minutes on the board we have many
00:52:48contenders for pole it's going to be a strong lap to take the second pole position of the year
00:52:54a reminder for you hey the graphics team have got it as well oscar piastri he's done it in the sprint
00:52:59format but never when it comes to the grand prix look at those eyes not even blinking absolute focus
00:53:07they're armed with all the information that their team can give them all the engineering knowledge
00:53:13all the track knowledge they know how the track will evolve as you go through the session track
00:53:19temperature stable as we go into the later part of the afternoon here and as i said earlier it's a
00:53:26pleasure to qualify a formula one car there is pressure of course when i said there wasn't of course
00:53:32there is but that pressure reduces when you're confident confident that you the car will go where
00:53:38you think you want it to be on the racetrack you're not fighting it and then if you can get a lap of
00:53:44perfection of course the lap time delivers so fascinating stories everywhere we look max
00:53:50estappen got within two hundredths of a second of sprint pole yesterday even though he's having to
00:53:54hustle that car in the way that others aren't this is a replay of a few moments ago first two cars out
00:54:02max estappen george russell heading into turn number one russell not interested in waiting and he takes his
00:54:09place at the head of the queue yeah all of those little things have a an effect as well russell
00:54:14obviously wanted to hustle hustle hustle on excuse me and max building his lap in a slightly different
00:54:21way russell now at turn 12 the staff and just arriving as we see there into turn 11.
00:54:27it's a bigger stop than maybe the camera angle affords us a view and then this constant roll through
00:54:35onto the uh the long back straight sector three out of 13 cambered there really you feel a grand prix
00:54:43car you feel the load building it is a wonderful feeling one thing we have seen in recent times is how
00:54:50much the wind can affect these modern formula one cars they are works of art they are incredibly quick
00:54:56you're about to watch the fastest times ever set around shanghai international but they're very sensitive
00:55:01dc and alex alban reporting on the radio that the wind has picked up lewis hamilton's q2 time
00:55:07was near six and a half tenths of a second slower than he's sprint pole time yeah well anyone who's
00:55:13flown will know what clear air turbulence feels like in an aircraft now you might think well what's that
00:55:19got to do with the grand prix car well the grand prix cars wings are just inverted instead of going along
00:55:24the runway and creating lift and taking you into the sky the faster you go it pushes the car into the
00:55:30tarmac but any turbulence any gusting wind has a massive effect in the overall load and a race car
00:55:37is like a set of scales if you have a tailwind it reduces the effect of the rear wing and it makes
00:55:42the scales tip on the nose and destabilizes the rear so you you're hoping that the racing gods will blow
00:55:49favorably upon you as you deliver the racing of the qualifying lap here's the man trying to repeat
00:55:55what he did last year and take grand prix pole position max verstappen was alongside his teammate
00:56:01sergio perez a year ago they locked out the front row part of a dominant run at the start of last year
00:56:08part of a fourth world championship campaign verstappen was on the front row for sprint qualifying
00:56:14yesterday didn't have the tire performance over 19 laps earlier today he said we're just not there
00:56:21in terms of the tire life compared to ferrari and mclaren but this is low fuel attacking laps and the man
00:56:28is trying to add to his collection of formula one pole positions verstappen rotating through the final two
00:56:34corners of the racetrack he will want pole number 41 today and this is his first effort in q3 across the
00:56:43line and he lines up with a 30.9 that's the benchmark for everyone to beat and antonelli brushes
00:56:50the gravel as he comes through losing a huge amount of time as well that's an opportunity for the likes
00:56:56of isaac hadjar one of the big four have had a wide moment hadjar goes ahead he manages to find a time
00:57:03half a second back from verstappen that's a good effort piastri is fast sector one and sector two yuki
00:57:10sunoda is behind his rookie teammate after the first push laps in q3 this is an absolutely scorching
00:57:18pace for a driver who has never taken a grand prix pole oscar piastri ahead of max verstappen
00:57:25provisionally to the front of the field the ferraris are next up and then it will be his teammate
00:57:31lando norris who was mighty quick in q2 lewis hamilton what a weekend he is having so far what a
00:57:38turnaround only third fastest behind the reigning world champion and the australian mclaren driver
00:57:44next up is charles leclerc who on the balance so far this weekend has been the slower of the two
00:57:49ferraris and the same applies once again he's three tenths of a second back from piastri what
00:57:55about lando norris though can he get on terms no he can't despite the fastest final sector so far
00:58:02he's nine hundredths of a second off mclaren won two but it's piastri ahead of norris yeah and the
00:58:07key to that time right now was that first sector piastri really built his lap strongly and i suspect if
00:58:15you put the best sectors between piastri and norris together we're going to get mid 30s and maybe even
00:58:23more there is so much time in that mclaren but you have to dance on the ragged edge george russell was
00:58:30doing the same thing through the final left-hander that completes the lap he splits the ferraris george
00:58:37russell behind his old teammate ahead of charles leclerc isaac hadja ahead of sunoda antonelli knows
00:58:44but if you can avoid the wide moment into the final turn there's more time as well and alex
00:58:49alban has separated the top 10 at the extremity of formula one qualifying by a second that's
00:58:55antonelli off the road time was deleted but the lap time was lost anyway yeah just a little bit late
00:59:00on turn into that final corner and you saw he was over the front tire and well had to lift out ran the
00:59:07gravel a little bit but the time it will not count but he now has a benchmark
00:59:14team for brussell 30.9 he's within a couple of temps of piastri but a couple of thousands is so
00:59:20difficult to find when you're on the limit lando norris trying to continue his run of being the lead
00:59:27mclaren on the grid last year in the head-to-head 20 times out of 24 races he was the lead
00:59:34mclaren piastri heads him with one run to go in q3 there's not much to find out there but we will
00:59:42expect the tires to be their best performance the track to be rubbered in the cars to be fastest
00:59:48it's a 130.7 the time to beat was always so impressive once you get into this final part of
00:59:56qualifying the track is as rubbered in as it's going to be this is where you really start to see what are
01:00:02the teams able to deliver maximum everything and now the top 10 is covered by a second where earlier
01:00:09in the first part of of qualifying the whole grid was covered by just over a second oscar piastri
01:00:16currently on provisional pole yet to take a pole position for a grand prix he has qualified on the
01:00:22front row seven times the most for any driver without a pole since the founder of his team
01:00:29bruce mclaren who was racing in the 60s set up this team team that david has raced for in formula
01:00:36one that returned to the top of the world with the championship win last year and they currently have
01:00:42a one-two at the head of the field norris will be desperate to keep piastri in the column of front
01:00:50row and not grand prix pole winners and piastri desperate to get his elbows out within the team
01:00:57and establish a pole position that then gives them so much opportunity in tomorrow's grand prix
01:01:03he had enough in melbourne of following the gearbox of his teammate wasn't happy at being pulled to
01:01:10cold told to hold station through the traffic and well he can right all those wrongs here
01:01:17he was absolutely distraught with how things unfolded in the final stages a strong second
01:01:25wanted the chance to race his teammate all the way to the end the intervention that rain shower changing
01:01:31everything the australian crowd cheering him back into the race somehow he recovered to score points
01:01:38with a great move on the last lap past lewis hamilton can mclaren convert what they have managed to put
01:01:46on the board with run one this is max estappen and the racing balls he's having to take avoiding action
01:01:55isaac hadjar joins the fast lane yeah well racing bulls are very much of course in it to win it but max
01:02:03probably as that sister team will be thinking all right get out of my way he's not far off he could
01:02:10easily improve up to provisional pole here as we've seen before two tenths of a second that is
01:02:17surmountable we are about to set our grid for the second grand prix of the year there is a comparison
01:02:24between max estappen and lewis hamilton the two racing rivals who started on the front row for the sprint
01:02:30race our first of the year earlier on 19 laps and it wasn't the type of performance that the stamp and
01:02:36wanted and he's currently chasing isaac hadjar around something about the way this car's lined up to
01:02:41suggest that might change by the time yeah there you go and isaac hadjar wisely gets out of the way
01:02:46yeah i was beginning to wonder whether max was going to see that as an opportunity given the racing bulls
01:02:51being competitive whether he would take a distant toll any help that you can get can make a difference but in
01:02:57the end well max poses on furrow he's going to have a completely clear track ahead to antonelli who's
01:03:04just about to launch his uh what will be if he gets a clean lap his only time lap of this qualifying
01:03:11session two minute warning on the board for q3 these are the final runs in grand prix qualifying to
01:03:18decide the top 10 for the second round of the year in the formula one world championship we're setting
01:03:23flying laps at shanghai international max estappen closes the drs and sends the car into the seemingly
01:03:30never-ending turn number one he's looking to improve by over two tenths of a second and put the pressure
01:03:36on the two mclarence tidy enough doesn't look spectacular but that's exactly how you want to get
01:03:42through one and two just keep the car rolling small improvement in sector that's enough that's all he
01:03:51needs the driver that missed out by less than two hundredths of a second is three hundredths of a second
01:03:56up on the first effort of oscar piastri through the first third of the racetrack the fast stuff of eight
01:04:03and nine falls away it's all about the 90 degree turns of nine and ten for staff and with a clean
01:04:09lap and he needs it at the moment second sector is not an improvement he's got a tenth of a second to
01:04:15find yeah it didn't look as if he was particularly bad in that middle sector but as you say hasn't
01:04:20improved which he gets that information that feedback every 10 meters his lap delta is being updated on
01:04:27his steering so he'll be watching that as he piles it down towards the big stop at 14 it's like a
01:04:35sledgehammer hitting the back of your head over 5g of deceleration no personal best for lando norris in
01:04:41the middle part of the lap antonelli improves up to seventh position but we're focusing on pole position
01:04:49leaning on the curb giving it everything can verstappen find his way to an improvement the answer's no
01:04:53he stays in third next up isaac hadjar in the racing balls climbs back past antonelli to p7 a great
01:05:02effort from him but what about lando norris he's got one corner to go and he's bailed out of it that
01:05:07middle sector wasn't enough he wasn't improving and now it's over to the ferraris piastri on provisional
01:05:14pole can hamilton snatch it away at the end there's no improvement for him and there's no one out there
01:05:19who's going to be challenging the man from melbourne who's pushing on trying to find something extra he
01:05:25does improve his time piastri on pole for a formula one grand prix the man from melbourne after the
01:05:35misery a week ago has found his way back and it's personal best in sector one and sector two for george
01:05:43russell it's an ordinary middle part of the lap for charles claire who cannot find the balance his
01:05:49teammate has had let's see whether he can find something in the final sector that changes all of
01:05:54that the answer is no the track is not there the drivers cannot find any performance can george russell
01:06:00change that narrative at the end and get ahead of his old teammate that will surely be his aim he comes
01:06:05across the line and he gets to the front row what a magic effort from george russell in the end he only
01:06:11missed out on eight hundredths of a second he split the two mclarens he's got to the front row and george
01:06:19russell finds a brilliant time but piastri's was even better for the first time in formula one it's
01:06:26grand prix pole for oscar piastri and he will lead the line for the second grand prix of the year yeah
01:06:35absolutely fantastic performance from piastri when others were struggling to find any lap time
01:06:41he pulled it together and cemented an even better lap and what about russell's lap as well that front
01:06:47rule is a story of brilliance i think that was the hairpin of my life yeah good stuff that so that is p1
01:06:56p1 well done mate pole position great job very nicely done thank you i've just had a little scream in my
01:07:03helmet so i'll uh not burst your eardrums but thanks everyone a bit of a journey to get there but
01:07:11well done very very good he's taken sprint poles and grand prix victory but this is his first true
01:07:21pole position piastri beats george russell his teammate the world champion and the man who won the sprint race
01:07:27earlier on and he's done it by the margin very nearly the margin he missed out on yesterday eight
01:07:33hundredths of a second and now there have been a hundred and seven drivers in world championship
01:07:41history to take a formula one poll you are looking at the most recent and his name is oscar jack piastri
01:07:49they're all chasing him into turn number one tomorrow yeah sitting in the car savoring the
01:07:55moment and lando well it's been a bit of a roller coaster this weekend doesn't it of emotions
01:08:02and in the end he wasn't able either in spring qualifying or main qualifying to get clean laps
01:08:09showing how difficult these cars are to just get and extract all of the performance and what a cool cat
01:08:18oscar piastri is he goes this is me happy this is me sad spot the difference he might scream into the
01:08:26helmet with joy but he won't let us hear it he'll tell us about it but he plays his cards close to his
01:08:32chest he is a rapid customer and now he will have george russell alongside him eight meters further back
01:08:40the top four separated by just over a tenth and a half under two tenths of a second between verstappen
01:08:48in fourth and a maiden pole position for oscar piastri who beat george russell who had that option
01:08:55yesterday didn't put it together i think he'll be very satisfied with uh that performance at the end
01:09:02no purple sectors but a personal best in all three to climb to the front row yeah oscar may have done
01:09:09the hairpin of his life but we'll hear from george and his own words but he's got to rate that as one
01:09:16of the laps of his life to pull that performance when no one else was finding lap time yeah absolutely
01:09:23excellent piastri russell norris then verstappen hamilton a dominant winner of the sprint race down
01:09:29in fifth sixth place for charles claire seventh for isaac hadjar who out qualifies his experienced
01:09:35teammate yuki sunoda then antoneli sunoda and alban i think oscar piastri said he was two tenths
01:09:43down before the hairpin we'll have to see that once again he was kicking up the dust on the apex on the
01:09:48way through before it's going to be some interesting tale being told to joelian palmer down in park ferme
01:09:59well lando you're back in the top three but i sense you're a little bit disappointed with that
01:10:03one not able to hook up the final lap how was it for you out there um yeah i mean always disappointed if
01:10:09i'm not on pole but uh oscar deserves it today he's done a very good job all weekend so i'm happy for him
01:10:15his first pole in former one so uh it's always cool um yeah just a couple of mistakes again uh
01:10:22kind of been my case this weekend but um the car is feeling a bit better today i've got a lot more
01:10:26comfortable with the car so uh a step in the right direction especially from yesterday where i was
01:10:31struggling a lot and even this morning i was struggling a lot um a much better direction that
01:10:35we're going in so uh yeah not uh not too disappointed and we're seeing so much pace from you so far this
01:10:41season but we are seeing a few laps not completed quite as you would want them a couple of areas
01:10:45here or there you allude to is the car really tricky to drive at the moment is it difficult to
01:10:49get it on the knife edge just absolutely spot on uh i mean yeah i've said that plenty of times so uh
01:10:56it is um it's so quick enough you know we never doubted that it's uh it's the quickest car it can just
01:11:02be a little bit uh feisty at times but um no today's is not so much that today was just uh mistakes from
01:11:07my side and um that's all and in terms of a race you had the sprint earlier didn't go your way at all
01:11:13but can you learn from that can you did you change the car much how are you feeling for tomorrow yeah
01:11:18we we changed quite a lot on the car because uh we were nowhere and um yeah we worked quite hard to
01:11:23make some improvements into quality and hopefully for the race tomorrow so uh we'll see all right good
01:11:29luck for tomorrow lando
01:11:41george what a performance on the front row in 2025 how was that for you it was uh feels incredible
01:11:48to be honest it was one of the hardest quality sessions i've done in a long long time and i was
01:11:53trying all sorts with with my preparation with the tires and nothing seemed to be clicking and
01:11:59did something totally different on that last lap and it just all came alive and that was was awesome
01:12:04and just yeah so so happy to be p2 what was the difference what did you do different oh i mean
01:12:10i was going fast on the outlap slow on the outlap prepping the outlap it was just and the last one was
01:12:15a bit of a roll of the dice and um i had a big moment at turn one but it just all came together and
01:12:20i was really surprised when i crossed the line i knew it was a good lap but to see that i was
01:12:25between the mclarens um yeah just yeah buzzing and looking forward to tomorrow and in terms of race
01:12:31space we saw earlier on you were honing in on the top three didn't quite get there but degradation
01:12:36looks really tough out there how are you feeling over the full distance yeah it's going to be tough
01:12:40i think um the medium tire and the sprint was really difficult obviously i think most drivers will
01:12:44start on that at the front of the field tomorrow and then the hard no one's ran all weekend so
01:12:49nobody knows right now if it's going to be a one or a two stop um we know the mclarens are going to
01:12:54be quick but i'll be doing doing everything to try and uh stay where we are or try and jump ahead of
01:12:59them should be a lot of fun good luck so much thank you
01:13:07oscar piastri grand prix pole position for the first time and what a way to do it two laps that would
01:13:16have had it there for you you just seem hooked up today uh i'm glad it looked like that because
01:13:21it didn't feel like that um i think yeah q3 um yeah just just found a lot of pace you know q1 and q2
01:13:27i was was genuinely struggling um and yeah the car just came alive in q3 and i think i came alive in q3
01:13:35so um no happy with um with what i did at the end um even still the laps were a little bit scruffy but
01:13:41um no very very i mean i'm just pumped to be on pole so uh very happy you've just done the fastest
01:13:48ever lap of this circuit new asphalt loads of grip obviously a car that's working well how much of a
01:13:54buzz is it to drive at these speeds um yeah it's it's a lot of fun i think with the the new surface
01:13:59it's extremely grippy um which for for us you know it's it's the best feeling in the world so um the only
01:14:07thing that comes with that is when you lose grip it bites uh that you i think you've probably seen
01:14:11a lot of snaps a lot of moments this weekend and um with with the surface we've got it's
01:14:16it's pretty tricky but um when you hook it up it it feels pretty mega so um i'll take the fastest lap
01:14:22of shanghai big smiles from you but there is still a race to do tomorrow still a grand prix win to to
01:14:28add to this pole position and you had the dress rehearsal earlier on car looked good but ferrari
01:14:33looked exceptionally strong as well how are you feeling obviously a bit of clear air for you
01:14:37hopefully at the start of the race yeah i mean i think that is hopefully going to be a help um i
01:14:42was going to make sure i keep that clean air but um i was pretty happy after the sprint i think um we
01:14:47did the most that we could have i was pretty happy with you know i would have been happier with one spot
01:14:52higher but how the the race turned out i you know couldn't have asked for much more um so i feel like
01:14:57we learned a lot this morning and looking forward to trying to put that into use tomorrow all right well
01:15:02congratulations oscar good luck for the race tomorrow well done
01:15:13thank you to joelian for making his way and it's quite a long way i'll be honest with you
01:15:16from the commentary box to park ferme to ask those questions of our new top three things change so
01:15:24quickly in formula one in 2025 from a front row that comprised of hamilton and verstappen to a front row of
01:15:32piastri and russell and lando norris a mistake on that final lap as well the same thing again and
01:15:39it's oscar piastri's side of the garage they're hugging each other outside of my commentary box
01:15:44window the 107th driver to take a world championship pole position and it's going to be a first ever
01:15:51pirelli pole position trophy for oscar piastri who was so upset with how things turned out
01:15:58one week ago and has turned the page in the best way possible russell with a great lap when it counted
01:16:08sneaking up and moving past verstappen norris and getting his way onto the front row for the first
01:16:17uh time this campaign and for a 50th time in his career but it's a first pole position for oscar piastri that
01:16:27is the headline on what has been a really interesting day ferrari on top in the sprint over 19 laps
01:16:35this was lando norris again heading to the hairpin again pushing on on the final lap
01:16:43and again heading wide getting on the curb losing time and in a few meters after this moment we joined
01:16:51him on board bailing out he knew no chance to improve beaten to formula one pole position in china by a
01:16:58tenth and a half this was yuki sunoda rotating the car it's going to be into turn 13 and any snap any
01:17:06moment oh that's a massive moment i was expecting an oversteer snap instead instead yuki scrubbing
01:17:13wide heading off now that's an unusual one we have heard from drivers that the tire temperature if it
01:17:22goes through the roof if you cannot control the temperature you will skate off at high speed looks
01:17:27inexplicable but something the drivers have been aware of the need to balance pushing around this lap
01:17:35with keeping the tire in the window absolutely vital and it's hajar who is in seventh sunoda who is in
01:17:43ninth let's go back to the front because we have a new pole position holder in formula one his name is
01:17:48oscar piastri for the first time in the grand prix qualifying hour he is on top he'll be joined on
01:17:54the front row by george russell it's a third place for lando norris who again for the second qualifying
01:18:00session in a row here in shanghai deep into the turn 14 hairpin max verstappen in fourth for red bull
01:18:07lewis houghton the lead ferrari ahead of charles claire fifth and sixth and then an amazing performance
01:18:13one week on from the disappointment from isaac hajar he's ahead of antonelli his teammate yuki sunoda
01:18:18and the 10th place driver alex alba esteban ocon is in 11th and then it's nico holkenberg in 12th
01:18:26fernando alonso is 13th ahead of his teammate lance stroll then it's carlos sainz who is out in q2
01:18:33gasly beharman duen fortleto and liam lawson were out in q1 as we lose the five slowest drivers in those
01:18:44sessions australia will be delighted to know for the first time since daniel ricardo in mexico
01:18:52they have a driver starting the grand prix from the front of the field oscar piastri
01:18:57ticks that box he'll want the win when formula one returns
01:19:11the first time that we can see you in the middle of the field as a of the field so you can see you
01:19:27can see you can see you
01:19:30You
