00:00Something shocking, and that's the way people think about short socks now.
00:07We're back!
00:08Oh, I'm loving this.
00:09Scouring Britain's sheds for classic cars.
00:12A thing of beauty.
00:13Proper special.
00:15Quintessential Brits.
00:16That's nice.
00:17A Lee Francis.
00:18American icons.
00:20Look at the amount of chrome on the front there.
00:23And Continental Curios.
00:25That is a Lancia Aprilia.
00:27We're going to buy them.
00:28Thank you so much.
00:30Fantastic, Ludo.
00:31Sort them.
00:31It's the sunroof.
00:33No, please, I'm getting out now.
00:35Drive them.
00:36And sell them for a tidy profit.
00:39Are we ready for money?
00:41This is Shevberry's Classic Cars.
00:48We're off to an airfield near Maidenhead in search of a classic car.
00:53We are going to go and see a man called Ludo.
01:00Do you think he's game?
01:03Game?
01:04Yeah.
01:04Yeah.
01:05I actually don't think we've ever visited a Ludo before.
01:09No.
01:10It's a cool name.
01:11Well, shall I tell you why it's quite cool?
01:13Go on then.
01:14Because he is supposedly French.
01:17So I can parlay avec him the fluence.
01:22Right.
01:23Okay.
01:23Je m'appelle Henri.
01:26Et aussi mon ami est Jellybean.
01:31Is that right?
01:31Oh, yeah.
01:33A great bit of bridging the divide between France and the UK.
01:40Okay.
01:40With some exceptional franglais.
01:43Ah, Trebien au Jourdouin.
01:44Now, shall I tell you what else is Trebien?
01:47Yes.
01:48Yeah?
01:48Ludo is into customs.
01:51Hot brody type stuff.
01:53Okay, very cool.
01:54So that could be, there could be almost anything there.
01:58French, Italian, American, anything.
02:03Whether we come back with a custom classic, a kid's board game, or a slap in the face from
02:09Ludo for my terrible French, who knows, but maidenhead, allons-nous, vite, vite.
02:17Ludo, before we start, there's a lot of commotion in the sky.
02:21Well, I might have to ask you to speak up a bit, mate.
02:24Okay.
02:24Can I just ask you, just an initial glance here, right?
02:27You're French.
02:28Yes, I'm French, yeah.
02:29How come you got into all this?
02:31It just, like, happened when I was a kid, yeah.
02:33I just grew up with my dad and had an American car.
02:36Okay.
02:37And then, yeah, it's a bit strange.
02:38That was it?
02:38I'm French.
02:39Love an American car, living in the UK, but...
02:41So why did you come over here?
02:43Because I think the scene over here of, like, car and American car is much bigger in the UK.
02:48Yeah.
02:48So you've got loads and loads of great cars, all kinds of stuff around here.
02:53Yeah.
02:54Are you sort of willing to part with absolutely everything, or...?
02:58We've got a few of them for sale.
02:59Okay, right, okay.
03:00So, I'll maybe persuade you to do a little bit more.
03:03Yeah.
03:03Yeah, see what goes.
03:05You never know.
03:06Ludo, look, what we'll do, if it's all right, we'll have a little wander around.
03:08Yeah.
03:09Yeah, no worries.
03:09And then we'll call you in if we need any advice.
03:11Mm-hmm.
03:12And then, hopefully, at the end, we'll have a haggle.
03:14Okay.
03:14Yeah, no idea.
03:15I was going to worry.
03:16You'll behave.
03:17Oh, well, well, just about.
03:18Yeah, I will.
03:19But, Ludo, très bien, merci.
03:21No, I'm not going to...
03:22Ah, bonjour.
03:24Yeah.
03:24Let's go and allay over there and start a Avec le Mach 1.
03:28Okay.
03:28Great stuff.
03:29Cheers, Ludo.
03:30We'll see you in a bit.
03:30Cheers, Ludo.
03:31All right, mate.
03:32Come on, then.
03:35And here it is, the Ford Mustang Mach 1.
03:38It's not quite fast enough to break the sound barrier, but the styling is.
03:44I love the colour.
03:46Recently, I was in the presence of a lovely, lovely red one, but I think I prefer the lime
03:51green.
03:52I like it, mate.
03:53This is, what, early 70s?
03:55Yeah.
03:55This shape.
03:56Early to mid-70s.
03:57Because it was a radical departure.
04:02The first versions of the Ford Mustang were relatively lean and mean, but by the early
04:071970s, they had muscled up with bigger engines and looks to match.
04:12It was the last stage before fuel crisis hit.
04:19And of course, you know, then the freeways and everything back down to sort of 55 or 65
04:25miles per hour and stuff like that.
04:27Downhill from there.
04:27And of course, then emissions creeped in.
04:30And then you end up with a Tesla.
04:32Anyway.
04:32Oh, these things are still around.
04:34Yeah.
04:34Do you want to go green?
04:35Yeah.
04:36This is the car.
04:39As well as muscle cars, Ludo clearly has a penchant for classic pickups like this 1957
04:46Ford.
04:46And most striking of all, this late 50s Ranchero.
04:54I mean, this is taking bare metal to another level.
05:00The Ranchero was a general purpose utility vehicle, but Ludo has transformed this one into
05:07a work of automotive art.
05:09The white bed.
05:12We've got the rug over the seat.
05:14And again, like you say, we've got the bare metal finish.
05:19And I think Ludo has been at work as well.
05:21Louvre at the bonnet.
05:23That is something proper special in my view.
05:27I could just see myself going down Highway 1.
05:30Well, I think so.
05:31Or the North Circular, actually.
05:33Don't bother me.
05:34Yeah.
05:34Yeah.
05:35You know, that's what it's all about, I think.
05:36Everything about this just exudes coolness, really.
05:43Whether we'd ever be able to afford this is another issue.
05:47But Ludo's also got some rougher looking items.
05:51There's a Ford Edsel saloon, mid-resto.
05:56Try getting this into a multi-story.
05:59And a Chevy van with cartoon connotations.
06:03Well, all I can say is...
06:06Roray, Henry.
06:08What, Scooby-Doo?
06:09Yeah.
06:10Roray, Henry.
06:12And most intriguing of all, there's a container at the back of the yard with a recent acquisition.
06:19I wonder what could be inside that.
06:21I mean, well...
06:21Probably an American car.
06:23Yeah, I should imagine.
06:24Might have a trailer or something.
06:25Let's have a look.
06:26Hold up.
06:27Oh, my word.
06:28Oh.
06:28There's big and there's this.
06:31Look at that.
06:32What the heck is that?
06:34It's an Imperial Chrysler.
06:35A Chrysler Imperial.
06:37Late 1950s, perhaps.
06:40But look at it.
06:41Look at the amount of chrome on the front there.
06:45This is Imperial by Chrysler Corporation.
06:48A car of impressive size.
06:51Generous passenger space.
06:53Great dignity.
06:54The Imperial was Chrysler's attempt to compete with Cadillac, a luxury saloon with high spec
07:03and a high price.
07:05Extracting all 18 foot of it is easier said than done.
07:10Well, you have to feel like we're going on the side and...
07:12Hang on.
07:13There are issues.
07:14I am getting trapped.
07:16This thing is a monster.
07:18It takes plenty of ooh-la-la.
07:22Oh, my God.
07:23And I want to go home.
07:24But eventually, our combined efforts get it out.
07:29This is a monumental, huge motor car.
07:34I love it.
07:35Look at it.
07:35I love it.
07:36The fins on the back, they're kind of toned down a bit with those rocket ship taillights.
07:41I love them.
07:42Looking like flames coming out the back.
07:44I love them.
07:44And the front is still in the 1950s as well.
07:47But if you look at the saloon area, that is pointing towards the 1960s.
07:53Does it go in there?
07:54Yeah.
07:54It's starting.
07:55Does it?
07:55OK.
07:56Yeah.
07:56And this one's available, is it?
07:58Yeah.
07:59Blimey.
07:59Blimey, O'Reilly.
08:00I think I'm going to have to lie down.
08:03If you thought nothing could upstage the Imperial, look at this Ford pickup.
08:09It's a holiday on wheels.
08:12Yes.
08:12An American holiday.
08:13It is, yes.
08:15OK.
08:15So, oh, right.
08:16It's a pickup with a caravan kind of drop-off.
08:20But this ain't any old caravan.
08:23Oh, yes.
08:24Here we are.
08:25Welcome home.
08:27Oh, mate.
08:27That is really mint.
08:29It is, isn't it?
08:30Yeah.
08:30Come on.
08:34I was thinking I was going to get into some kind of sort of moth-eating camper van.
08:38Yeah.
08:39But actually, it's utterly lovely.
08:40I mean, what's not to like?
08:42Well, probably the price.
08:44Yeah.
08:45Well, we could ask.
08:46Well, we could ask.
08:49So what an automotive smorgasbord.
08:52A pimped-up Ford Mustang.
08:54A stripped-down ranchero.
08:56A glammed-up camper van.
08:58And a great white whale of a Chrysler.
09:01But will we be able to afford any of them?
09:04Come on, then.
09:07Let's go see them.
09:08Come on, then, Lulu.
09:09Au revoir.
09:10Je suis Henri avec orange.
09:13That's French, you know.
09:18You know, to say we've had an amazing time is an understatement.
09:21If we just go through a few things to see if there is anything you want to get rid of.
09:26All right.
09:26I'm going to start with the green Mustang outside.
09:28Yeah, green.
09:30So, is that for sale?
09:31That's for sale, yeah.
09:32Okay.
09:33This one is for sale.
09:34I think 17,000 on the one.
09:36Okay, 17.
09:37All right.
09:39Now, ranchero.
09:41This one?
09:41Yeah.
09:42Oh, no.
09:43This one is not for sale.
09:44No.
09:45So, is my baby.
09:46Okay.
09:47So, now I'm going to speak French.
09:49Et aussi, Ludo, nous avons a Chrysler Grand Blanc Whale.
09:58Yeah.
09:59How much is that?
10:00That is at eight and a half.
10:03And then, finally, you've got what is a lovely F1.
10:07Le Campeur, yeah.
10:08Yeah, Campeur.
10:08What a lovely thing.
10:09This is for sale as well, yeah.
10:10Okay.
10:11This is for sale for six.
10:12Sixteen.
10:12Sixteen.
10:13Sixteen.
10:13So, yeah.
10:14Okay.
10:14How about seven for the white whale?
10:17Mm, no, that's going to be tricky.
10:19Seven and a half.
10:22Seven, seven, fifty.
10:25Mm-mm.
10:26We're down in Maidenhead with Ludo and his unexpected collection of American classics.
10:46He wants eight and a half grand for a Chrysler Imperial, but will he sell it for this?
10:51Does it have to start with an eight?
10:55Yeah.
10:55Don't say that.
10:56Where are you going to go from seven, seven, fifty?
10:58Seven, seven, sixty.
10:59Yeah.
11:00Yeah, I'll sing a price, yeah.
11:02Yeah, it's great, yeah.
11:03Good way.
11:04Which is wheat?
11:04Yeah, great.
11:05All right.
11:06Thank you so much.
11:07Fantastic, Ludo.
11:07That's great.
11:08Eight grand.
11:09That is fantastic.
11:10That is wheat grand.
11:11Yes, that's right.
11:12Yeah, it is, yeah.
11:13Mate, I've got to do it.
11:14I think you say wheat and meal.
11:15Ludo, thank you so much.
11:17You're welcome.
11:17What a lovely day, man.
11:22Two days later, back at the shed, we make some space for our Chrysler.
11:27Alan's away on holes, but Jelly has already given it the paw of approval.
11:34Hold on.
11:34Has Guy shrunk, or is it just the size of the car?
11:38It's just the size of the car.
11:39What a beast.
11:40I have to tell you, I think the only way to describe this is a cruise ship.
11:46It is, really.
11:47I do think it's fantastic.
11:49I love it.
11:50I love things like, look at this wing mirror.
11:52It's all that rocket from the 60s, man.
11:54Of course, yeah.
11:54Going to the moon and all that kind of caper.
11:56That's right, yeah.
11:56I love the shape of this screen.
11:58Same here.
11:59It looks like it's like, is this paint?
12:02Okay.
12:02Or is this oil?
12:03What is it?
12:03Wax, I think.
12:04Yeah, I reckon, Fuzzer, don't you?
12:07I think that it has been preserved with this wax.
12:11Yeah.
12:12Yeah.
12:12And I think that wax goes on the chrome as well.
12:16Right.
12:16So are we going to get that off or leave it on for a patina?
12:19No.
12:19I think the rust is the patina.
12:22Yeah.
12:22If we can get this off, let's get it off.
12:26Yeah.
12:26Let's degrease it or something.
12:28Yeah, I don't know.
12:28Well, we'll try with different stuff, mate.
12:30We can do that tomorrow.
12:31I think you pair have got your work cut out here because look at the size of it.
12:36There's a lot of cleaning off to do.
12:38There's an acreage.
12:40Yeah.
12:40Yes.
12:40Yeah.
12:40And skid, don't let him walk off.
12:45So that's tomorrow sorted.
12:47But today's other task is to check how this runs.
12:51Here we go.
12:51There's a lever here.
12:52All right.
12:53There we go.
12:53Oh, it's heavy.
12:54Here we go.
12:55Come on.
12:56I'll hold it.
12:57A wide V.
12:596,750 cc's of V8 engine, man.
13:03Oh, mate.
13:04I just music to my ears.
13:05Yeah.
13:06Now, I'm going to start it and we'll have a look.
13:09And then we're going to take it down the drive, the three of us, and Jelly Bean.
13:13Yeah.
13:14Okay.
13:14Let's see if it actually goes.
13:18There you are.
13:18That's all right.
13:19Okay.
13:19Yeah, it's cool.
13:22It's quite smooth.
13:24That sounds nice.
13:24Yeah, it does.
13:25Hey, Bean, does it sound good to you?
13:27Has it got good oil pressure?
13:28Have you got an oil pressure gauge?
13:30Yeah.
13:31Seems all right.
13:33That sounds lovely.
13:34Yeah, that's super smooth.
13:35I reckon that's running on all eight.
13:38All in.
13:38Let's go.
13:41So let the good times roll.
13:43All be it in a stately, smooth, imperial kind of a way.
13:57Oh, I like this.
13:59I do as well.
14:00I mean, there's plenty of room.
14:01I mean, you know, three grown blokes in the front.
14:03And a dog.
14:04And a dog, yes.
14:05Hellyard can stretch out in the back when he can.
14:07Yeah, yeah.
14:07On holiday, eating crisps.
14:09Yeah.
14:09I think this is a great vehicle, mate.
14:13Yeah, ma'am.
14:14For a change, I think you boys have done well.
14:17Yeah.
14:20Admittedly, there are a few squeaks and rattles, but the automatic transmission is as smooth
14:26as Dean Martin.
14:27The interior is as big as a Greyhound bus.
14:30And once we've cleaned her up, I've got a plan.
14:35What are we going to do with it?
14:37We're going to go to a custom show and we're going to give it the absolute massive.
14:41There's something about this car that is very appealing.
14:45I think you're right.
14:48Can you see if anything works while we've just parked up here?
14:51Okay.
14:52Good idea.
14:53Wipers.
14:54Yes!
14:55And the car's going backwards.
14:56Hang on, we're going backwards.
14:57Hang on, we're going backwards.
14:59So when you turn the wipers on, it selects reverse.
15:01There we are.
15:03So there's a slight issue.
15:05I don't know if the headlights are working.
15:06Someone's going to have to get out.
15:07Okay, so that's the headlights.
15:13Side lights.
15:14Try the main beam.
15:17Yes!
15:20Next morning, we start on the clean-up.
15:32I've found that in the ship.
15:34It says abrasive compound for cutting, finishing or both.
15:38Mate, this is going to take a while.
15:42We're still not quite sure what this coating is, but the combined impact of the cutting compound and the polishing mop has a pretty instant effect.
15:52I can tell you like this vehicle because you're very enthusiastic for you.
15:56Normally at this stage you've walked away.
15:58No, no.
15:58I can tell you're into this.
15:59No, officially I am out of breath.
16:01Our Imperial is 18 foot long, 6 foot wide and 5 foot tall, so it's got more body work than the Statue of Liberty.
16:12It's the perfect moment for young Sam to turn up for some work experience.
16:17The key to it is pressing hard.
16:21Yeah.
16:21So just all it is is that.
16:23And then, there you are.
16:25You can see the black stuff we're trying to get rid of, yeah?
16:27Yeah.
16:28Just give it a whiz.
16:29Give it a whiz.
16:29Have some fun.
16:30That's fantastic, isn't it?
16:32I mean, that's what work experience fellas are for, isn't it?
16:34Corey, did you ever do work experience?
16:37Did I, Hank?
16:38I'll tell you from distance.
16:40It's looking good.
16:41Yeah, no, it is.
16:46In the afternoon we let Sam off the hook, while Skid gets on with the chrome work.
16:52Well, as ever, when there's a bit of elbow grease to do, he's disappeared.
16:57They'll claim that he's been doing something of great importance, but he's not.
17:02This is not going to be a five-minute job, which also means he's going to get bored.
17:07I think they've put a kind of lacquer on it, very thinly.
17:11They've painted it on the paintwork.
17:13This polish does get it off, but it takes a while.
17:18All right, mate.
17:20Nice of you to turn up.
17:22Don't be like that.
17:23The problem here is the sheer scale of it.
17:26Normally I can do a front bumper in, what, 20 minutes?
17:29Yeah, no, look, I know you've been doing a couple of hours.
17:30But this is gargantuan.
17:31I know, it is bad, isn't it?
17:33But at the same time, mate, no pain, no gain.
17:36Yeah?
17:37You've got plenty of time.
17:37Well, so you've had no gain, then.
17:39I know, mate.
17:39Absolutely no gain whatsoever.
17:41I don't need it, because I'm perfect.
17:43I'm perfect.
17:44By the end of the day, with the glass cleaned and the chrome all polished, our imperial really
17:53is fit for an emperor.
17:56Mate, it looks fantastic, doesn't it?
17:58It looks beautiful, mate.
17:59Honestly, I tell you, that is a transformation.
18:01It's a subtle one, but it is a massive transformation.
18:04Getting rid of that, whatever it is that was on it, has been a hard job, but at the same
18:09time, have we added value?
18:11Next on the list, the interior.
18:18But when Skid turns up on the following morning, I've got a surprise for him.
18:21I had a visitation last night.
18:26Yes.
18:27From my mate Oxford Dom, and I couldn't resist it, 45 quid.
18:33It's a classic American bicycle, a Schwinn Stingray, the perfect accessory for the Chrysler.
18:43We can put that in the boot of the imperial and take it to a show and ride about, and you
18:48never know, someone might buy it.
18:50It'll be a great thing to bobble about on.
18:52Yeah, great.
18:53So we can bobble around at the Henley American Car Show this weekend.
19:01But before that, there's several things I want to change.
19:05The modern headlamp's got to go.
19:07The seat needs to tidy up.
19:10And most of all, the frame needs to respray.
19:14Well, shall we discombobulate?
19:16Yeah, let's quickly rip it apart.
19:17Without more ado, we banish the interloper.
19:25Strip and prep the frame.
19:29Ow!
19:29What have you done?
19:30Oh, that hurt my thumb.
19:33And once it's all masked off, puff on two coats of rattle can black.
19:38This bike will look fantastic when we've done it.
19:42Yeah, it does look nice.
19:43All that prep is paying off, I think, isn't it?
19:4920 minutes later, the first coat is virtually done.
19:52I thought you said, Rude, let's go and walk away.
19:56Well, you know what it's like.
19:57You're walking away and then you see a little nuance that...
20:00I know, I know.
20:01I am.
20:01I'm walking away now.
20:02Yeah, yeah, okay, good.
20:03Any runs in it are going to be flatted off with a very fine wet and dry.
20:07What do you think, son?
20:08It's beautiful.
20:08With the red accents, that'll be nice.
20:11So what a great day.
20:15We've given the bike a new look and smartened up the Chrysler's paint job big time.
20:21It'll be a tall order getting the interior sorted for the weekend's car show.
20:25But when you've got a space-age Chrysler in the yard, the sky's the limit.
20:41We've got a job on, prepping our vast Chrysler Imperial for a car show this weekend and finishing
20:51off a Schwinn Stingray that's going to sit in the boot.
20:55The good news is Buzz is back in town.
20:58The bad news, he's spotted a gremlin.
21:02I was just standing with it ticking over and I heard a groaning sound and I thought it might
21:07be you.
21:08Nice guy.
21:08It was the radiator cap just letting off a bit of pressure and then there was a bit
21:14of a gush down on the floor and I thought that might have been you as well.
21:17But it wasn't.
21:18I think that we've got a bit of overheating going on.
21:24Let's put some water in the bag.
21:25Okay, come on then.
21:25Start it up and see what goes on.
21:27Go on then.
21:30Right, come on.
21:30I'm going to see if this will start up.
21:32Okay, come on then.
21:34Oh, hello, Bean.
21:37Okay.
21:38Well, it starts first time.
21:42Yeah.
21:42That's like Jurassic Park, isn't it?
21:45I can see it.
21:45How about those bubbles?
21:46Yeah.
21:46Is that just...
21:47If a head gasket had gone or if we had a crack in the block or something, I would be expecting
21:52more bubbling than that.
21:54Right, okay.
21:55Would it need a new fauna stack?
21:58Possibly so, yeah.
22:00Should we go and have tea then or what?
22:02Well, if you put the kettle on, we'll have the tea that you make.
22:08He won't be back, you know.
22:09He has the attention span of a gnat.
22:16Five minutes later, I'm back.
22:18No refreshments, but something much more exciting.
22:21Can I just say, I haven't brought tea.
22:25I brought something else that didn't need to go out.
22:26Hey!
22:27Oh, look at that.
22:28Eh?
22:29What do you reckon?
22:30Beautiful.
22:30Absolutely stunning.
22:32Oh, she's lovely.
22:33Look, she's very docile, isn't she?
22:34So you've been distracted by Jelly Tot.
22:36The Jelly Tot.
22:37That's another.
22:37Mine's cold, by the way.
22:39Sorry, I will do the tea, but it's just that Tot needed priority.
22:42Yes, of course.
22:42That's fair enough.
22:43I'll suffer in silence.
22:44So have you found out that the thermostat's knackered?
22:47We're suspicious of it.
22:48Yeah, yeah.
22:49We've got to get it out and then drop it in boiling water and see if it opens.
22:52Oh, great, okay.
22:54The thermostat's a vital component which regulates the engine temperature.
22:59Generally, they last about ten years, but this car's a lot older than that.
23:03And here is our thermostat.
23:07Look, it's closed.
23:10So it hasn't opened at whatever temperature this is at.
23:13So do we need to put it in boiling water now to make it open?
23:17Yes.
23:17As we're going to test that, I'll go and boil the kettle.
23:19Okay.
23:22Right, here we go.
23:24That's in there.
23:25So get it on there.
23:29What's happening?
23:30We've just dropped some boiling water over the thermostat and we're waiting to see if the thermostat will open.
23:37I still haven't made the tea.
23:39Well, there's no kettle there.
23:41I've used the kettle.
23:42Oh, that's right.
23:43See, that was the reason why I didn't, because I knew you were going to need it.
23:45And I noticed the kettle was stone cold and there were no tea bags in cups.
23:49Right, come on then.
23:50Okay, shall we see?
23:51Yeah, come on.
23:52Okay.
23:52It should be open by now, shouldn't it, with that?
23:54It should be, yeah.
23:54No.
23:56Okay, well, yeah, it had opened very, very slightly.
24:02Right, so we need a new one of those.
24:03Yep.
24:04Can you get on the internet?
24:06Yeah.
24:10The skids are itching to get back to the bike, but the interior also leaves plenty to be desired.
24:16The missing front panel, the door cart, is lurking in the boot.
24:21It looks like a burst sofa.
24:24In fact, every single door cart in there looks like a burst sofa, doesn't it?
24:28Yes, yeah.
24:28So, join the club.
24:32Fuzzy's undaunted.
24:34He fits the panel.
24:39It looks in much better condition on than when it was in your hand at the boot.
24:45And then unleashes his secret weapon, a can of contact adhesive.
24:51Now, that's cheating.
24:52I wasn't expecting it.
24:53Okay, well, there you go.
24:55When you asked me for a brush, I thought you were going to just do the edge.
25:00For good measure.
25:02A little bit along here.
25:04He adds the extra layer of glue to the edge.
25:07And with Skid's help, crimps it all into position.
25:13Yeah, it's coming together.
25:15There we are.
25:15Look at that.
25:16Just put my hand on there.
25:17Yeah, when you're elbows on there, you won't see that, will you?
25:20Yeah, good as new.
25:21Yeah.
25:21Ish.
25:24Another bit of good news is that I've sourced a replacement thermostat.
25:28It won't be here till tomorrow.
25:30So, Fuzz heads home, leaving Skid to get back to the bike.
25:35Now, look, initial impressions of this.
25:37Look, it's not perfect, but it's way better than it was.
25:40So, the first thing I'm going to do is take all the bags and masking tape off
25:45and actually see completely what we're left with.
25:49Skid removes all the masking.
25:51That's looking really nice.
25:57Refit's the wheels.
25:59The cables.
26:01There we go.
26:02And the seat.
26:05And then, once the brakes are all sorted, I arrive, just in time, to be too late.
26:13Oh, you've done it.
26:14That's the beauty of a pedal bike, mate.
26:16That's so simple.
26:17Well, so, it's taking you about an hour.
26:19How fantastic does that look?
26:22I think you actually got on quicker without me, didn't you?
26:25But I have to tell you, mate, that is rather lovely.
26:29And it's all ready for us to...
26:31Well, is it ready for us to do a test ride?
26:34Absolutely.
26:35It'd go really nicely with my chopper bicycle, wouldn't it?
26:37Oh, it would, yes.
26:38It's the Americana versus the English.
26:40Oh, well, let's get down our drive.
26:42Yeah.
26:50Do you know what, Skiddy?
26:51I'll tell you what.
26:52There's something about these two bicycles that, like, embodies what I loved at an early age about two-wheel transportation.
27:02Youth culture.
27:03Mate, yeah.
27:04That's where my joy of two-wheel started.
27:06Absolutely.
27:07Messing around with bicycles from a really young age.
27:10Now, I want you to watch my starting technique.
27:12Okay.
27:12Because there's a really cool thing with these.
27:14Oh, okay.
27:15Okay.
27:15All right.
27:16Do you want to watch me?
27:16Yeah, I've got to watch you.
27:17I'll stop and wait for you so we go off together.
27:19All right, yeah.
27:20Okay.
27:20Now, what you do with these, this is uber cool.
27:22Right, ready?
27:23Just push off.
27:24Go, pedal!
27:25There we go.
27:26That's it, Skidder!
27:27There we go, son.
27:28Oh, I'll catch up.
27:29Oh, wait.
27:30Wait for me!
27:32So, choc's away.
27:33After spending most of the day working on a huge car, these lightweight bikes are such
27:42a joy.
27:43I'll tell you what is lovely about that, is that it complements the Imperial beautifully,
27:56doesn't it?
27:56Absolutely.
27:57It's part of American culture and psyche.
28:00Yes.
28:00You start on that and you end up cruising Main Street in an Imperial.
28:11There won't be any cruising down Main Street unless that thermostat arrives.
28:16Fortunately, next day, it does.
28:21I'm just going to hop the new thermostat in place.
28:25There we go.
28:25Everybody's left me.
28:33You're supposed to know what you're doing, mate.
28:35And I've bought you a big jug of water to fill it up with when you're finished.
28:40Oh!
28:41He's just kicked over the water.
28:43I've kicked the bucket.
28:43He's kicked over the bucket.
28:46In goes the H2O.
28:49And we're ready for a test.
28:53Okay, let's start it up.
28:55We've got to wait for the thermostat to open to top this up, haven't we?
29:06Yeah, well, yeah, I guess so.
29:09But, I think we've probably got enough in because it's stopped down a little bit.
29:14So, let's just wait and see what happens.
29:18What are those pipes right now, the heater pipes?
29:20I mean, they're warmer than they were, but by this time, last time, they'd have been red hot.
29:26That's it.
29:27Well, I think now we've got proper circulation.
29:30I'm going to stick my neck out and say, I reckon we've sold it.
29:35Right, great.
29:36Yeah.
29:37This is definitely warming up.
29:39This was stone cold before.
29:40Yes, that's right.
29:41Yeah, I think we've sold it.
29:43Well done, boys.
29:44Yeah, I think we might be able to go out for a little drivey-wiving.
29:49Oh, I think we should have a speech, haven't we?
29:51So, we're back on the road again.
29:58With a car this wide, I hope I don't meet anyone in the lane.
30:02Yeah, and I hope you don't put it in a ditch.
30:07Oh, ye of little faith.
30:09Firstly, there are no ditches big enough.
30:12And secondly, it drives great.
30:16Tell you what, so far so good, I think.
30:19Yeah, what are the gauges, shall we?
30:21All gauges are right in the middle.
30:23Right, OK.
30:24Battery, temperature, gasoline, which will be down in a minute.
30:29Our Imperial comes from a time when no-one cared about fuel economy.
30:34It does eight miles per gallon on the highway, less in the city.
30:40This literally takes up most of the footprint of a Routemaster bus.
30:46I think it takes up most of the carbon footprint of the UK.
30:49On a more positive note, there's no sign of overheating or radiator problems.
30:57Shall I try and smoke it and see what happens with the gear?
31:00No, no, no.
31:00You're burning the crotchet.
31:01No, you see, there we go.
31:02There's the mechanical symphony.
31:04Oh, here we go.
31:06Just go gently.
31:07Yeah.
31:08Before I destroy the gearbox, we'll head back home.
31:14Fuzz has got a scoot, so me and Guy are going to do a bit of re-upholstery.
31:18This is what you call in the trade, mate, blanket coverage.
31:24Look, these are lovely.
31:26Look, feel how nice they are.
31:27They are soft.
31:28They're all just soft and warm and fuzzy.
31:31Now then, I think these are going to look rather nice in there.
31:35Shall we do the back one first, only because that's the most horrible?
31:39Yes.
31:43Whether they're rolled up on the front forks of a Harley or adorning the back of a custom car,
31:49the Mexican roll mat has become a restorer staple.
31:52Oh, I think we should leave the front seats as they are.
31:59That red goes with that red vinyl.
32:01Yeah, it's great.
32:02Mate, rock on.
32:03I would now be willing to actually sit on that seat.
32:06Yeah, exactly.
32:07I'll tell you what's lovely about that, with that furry inside of that blanket.
32:10If we get sort of stranded.
32:12Yeah.
32:12Nice snooze material.
32:13Yeah, or you can take it out and sit on the riverbank with it.
32:16Exactly.
32:17Or have a picnic.
32:18It's beautiful, man.
32:19Beautiful.
32:20Good old Mexican mats.
32:23Tomorrow, we're heading for a classic American car show at Stoner Park near Henley.
32:29Admittedly, our Chrysler is still more rolling restoration than concourse queen,
32:34but it's a perfect candidate for the rally of the giants.
32:52Just two weeks ago, we rolled out a Chrysler Imperial from a container in Maidenhead.
33:01You're good.
33:02You're good.
33:02Yeah, great.
33:03All right.
33:04Thank you so much.
33:05Fantastic, Ludo.
33:05We cleaned it.
33:09Repaired it.
33:11We've got proper circulation.
33:14I reckon we've sold it.
33:15And showed it the love.
33:19A little bit along here.
33:20Now we're taking it to a classic car show at Stoner Park near Henley.
33:26Have you filled up with petrol?
33:31Because this likes a drink.
33:33Well, yes is the answer.
33:35With a can or from a pump?
33:37Can.
33:38So it's not that much, is it?
33:39No.
33:40So it was just one can.
33:41We're going to get about ten miles.
33:44Yeah, can we stop at the first petrol station, please?
33:46No, it was a couple of counts.
33:47All right.
33:48We will stop.
33:49We will stop and guzzle up.
33:54In spite of its thirsty petrol tank,
33:57advertisements for the Imperial declared that it was such a comfortable ride,
34:01owners would never want to leave the wheel.
34:03Even on a British road where it dwarfs the other cars,
34:07it's incredibly smooth.
34:08Oh, man, this is rolling.
34:12I really do feel like we're going to the Rally of the Giants.
34:16I think it has a feeling already it will make it.
34:19Yeah, I think it will make it.
34:20I think it's great.
34:21I love this car.
34:25Five gallons later,
34:27we reach Henley.
34:38Hey, I tell you what, it's not bad, is it?
34:46Oh, we've arrived, boys.
34:47Fantastic.
34:48How fantastic is that?
34:49We're right in the middle of the action as well.
34:51The Rally of the Giants is the UK's largest classic American car show.
34:58Living proof, if it were needed,
35:00that when it comes to American cars, size matters.
35:04Alan Murphy is the boss.
35:08Hey, so look, tell us then, mate,
35:10about the show and how long has it been going for?
35:12There are 271 entries from all eras of American iron.
35:26Man, they're just beautiful.
35:28And also, they're all so different.
35:29You look at the eclectic mix here.
35:32You know, I'm sorry, in the 40s and 50s,
35:34you didn't get that kind of sort of variation within British.
35:38No, no black and brown.
35:39That's all right, yeah, with a brown interior.
35:42Yeah, yeah.
35:42And no heater.
35:43Yeah, no heater.
35:45Though I was hoping to use the show to find a buyer for the Chrysler,
35:49it's impossible not to go walk about when there's so much to see.
35:54There are all the famous brands,
35:57from Chevrolet to Plymouth to Buick.
36:04Oh, gosh.
36:06Look at the dashboard, lads.
36:09And rare models like this Cadillac Eldorado,
36:13which almost out fins are imperial.
36:17I bought it as a wreck,
36:18and I thought because I didn't have to pay a lot for it,
36:21I thought I'd do a bit of an Elvis tribute,
36:23because he had a purple 56.
36:25Did he?
36:26So I've done everything he's saying,
36:27except for he had a white stripe on the back fin there.
36:31So it's an Elvis homage.
36:33It's quite a rare old car.
36:34I mean, I think they made about, you know, 1,200 back in 56.
36:40And going back even further,
36:42one of the first ever Cadillacs from 1903.
36:47Tell me about the snake there.
36:49That's well cool.
36:49It's a period extra.
36:51It's a boa constrictor horn.
36:53Oh, my God.
36:54The car was 200 pounds new.
36:58Yeah.
36:58That horn was 12 pounds,
37:00so well over 10% of the value of the car.
37:03That's amazing.
37:03Even more surprising is how you get this Caddy going.
37:08There's a bit of a procedure to it,
37:10but if you're happy to do it...
37:12Go on, Fuzz.
37:12Yeah, I'll do it.
37:13Come on, then.
37:14Remove the seat.
37:16Okay.
37:17Okay.
37:18Right.
37:18If you lift up the hatch...
37:19Okay.
37:19Can you see there's a tap on the side of the oil?
37:22I can, yes.
37:23Turn that to 90 degrees.
37:25Turn to 90 degrees.
37:26These oilers need to be in the upright position.
37:29There's three of them on both oilers.
37:31Two and three.
37:32Correct.
37:33Okay.
37:34This is the important bit.
37:35Can you see the little notch on there?
37:37Here.
37:37Yep.
37:38You need to have that lined up with that line there.
37:41Okay.
37:42If you want to now prime it,
37:44I've shown you where the primer lever is.
37:45Righto.
37:46If you now count to five...
37:48One, two, three, four, five.
37:52Yep.
37:52So you've now primed the carburetor.
37:54Fantastic.
37:55I'm ready.
37:55We have to put the throttle onto full.
37:58So it's anti-clockwise.
38:00You'll feel it get very stiff.
38:03Go over that.
38:03That's the compression.
38:05Keep going round.
38:05You've got to get it onto the third compression.
38:09There.
38:09Okay.
38:09Right.
38:10Slide that button to either the left or the right.
38:14That's a mission.
38:15Two hands now.
38:16Right.
38:16And give it all you've got.
38:18There you go.
38:22Oh, yeah.
38:24It's running, Buzz.
38:25Congratulations, Buzz.
38:27Well done, mate.
38:28Well done, Buzz.
38:30You can take it for granted.
38:32This Cadillac was never used as a getaway car.
38:35But there are others that might have been.
38:38I have to tell you, I mean, we're both rear bikers, really.
38:41Yeah.
38:41I don't know what it is, but I just feel like I've come home.
38:46Yeah.
38:46When you look at something like that, with that whole kind of sort of Bonnie and Clyde sort
38:50revive it, it's everything that I grew up with, Great Gatsby and all this kind of stuff, you
38:55know?
38:55It's 1930.
38:57Yeah.
38:57They made 128 of them, and at the moment, we only know of two others worldwide on the road.
39:06Wow.
39:06They're still going.
39:07Yeah.
39:09Most of the cars are beautifully restored production models, but there are some fabulous hot rods,
39:15like this Model B Roadster.
39:17It was bright yellow when I got it, but I wanted to split it up, so I let me borrow his barn,
39:23and I painted the back.
39:24You've done a good job on it.
39:25I'll tell you what, I'm quite partial with a rattle can.
39:28I know.
39:29I've seen a rattle can.
39:30Yeah, all right.
39:31Can I just say, it's not that quality, mate.
39:35Don't let him near it.
39:37Eight litres.
39:38That is absolutely monstrous.
39:40You've got to be quite light on the throttle.
39:43And Anne-Marie, I love your outfit to go with it.
39:45You've just got the look.
39:47You, on the other hand, Mark, I mean, you could do better, couldn't you?
39:49He's just a great pack.
39:50Everybody says that.
39:51But when it comes to engines, very few things can out-wow this vintage Buick.
39:59This is a 1918 car.
40:02Is it?
40:02Yes, so it's almost as old as you, but it is superbly presented.
40:08Perfect patination.
40:11Oh, yeah, man, look at that.
40:14Oh, that is amazing.
40:15That is your cathedral of mechanical music, isn't it?
40:17Isn't it?
40:18It's like an organ.
40:19It's good for 50 miles an hour.
40:23Fantastic.
40:24Rear wheel brakes only, so it's a little bit dangerous.
40:27Yeah, but at the same time, that's the fun.
40:30So if you want fins, chrome, and unlimited fun,
40:39get yourself some American iron and roll on down to the Rally of the Giants.
40:44They might look like a million dollars, but these days, American classics are surprisingly affordable.
40:50Which brings us back to our Chrysler Imperial.
40:55What an amazing day, lads.
40:57Now, look, we were supposed to bring this out and sell it.
40:59We've had too much fun walking around, haven't we?
41:02Well, we haven't exactly been here to sell it.
41:05Yeah, but do you know, this scene is so fantastic, it would be worth keeping hold of it, really, wouldn't it?
41:11Oh, don't say that, mate.
41:12Yeah.
41:12Look, the other thing is, is that we got the Stingray out of boot.
41:15Yeah.
41:15Yeah.
41:16But again, no takers for that, mainly because we haven't been here to entertain them.
41:21No.
41:21Hey, what a great shame, but all we can do now, really, is find out how much it's worth from Chopper Roy.
41:27Yeah.
41:28But I reckon it's nine grand all day long.
41:33Next day, I find out if my hunch is correct, when we stage our own exclusive car show, back at the ranch.
41:40I mean, it is a boat.
41:41Yeah.
41:42What do you reckon?
41:43I love it.
41:44Oh, do you?
41:44Yeah, right up my street.
41:46Yeah.
41:46I know, well, I knew it would be up your street, Chopstick.
41:48Yeah, I've had loads of these.
41:49Have you?
41:50Yeah.
41:51Well, obviously, it's a rolling restoration.
41:53Yeah, it is.
41:53But, what do you reckon?
41:57It's got to be a massive all-in-ten, but if it was around the nine, I'd probably have it myself.
42:02Cool.
42:03Well done.
42:03Thank you very much.
42:04There we are.
42:04Yeah, that's good.
42:06That's great.
42:08We've made a grand on that.
42:09We have.
42:10No, we've done a lot.
42:11No, no.
42:12I'm just telling you, I think that would suit you.
42:15I think so.
42:15In fact, you two should go out together in it with your two shirts on.
42:18Look at you, the two of you.
42:19Swing.
42:21As for our other bit of Americana.
42:24It rides nicely, I've ridden it.
42:27Yeah, yeah, they're well built.
42:29400 quid.
42:31Steady on.
42:32That good or bad?
42:33No, that's...
42:34I mean, we are on a serious earner there.
42:37They're 300 quid for a rough one, so...
42:40We've bought it for 45 quid.
42:41I'll bargain.
42:42Chopsicle, that's amazing.
42:44You've earned me £1,000.
42:46And potentially...
42:47I've earned you a little tickle there.
42:49Thank you very much.
42:50Let's just say it's 300.
42:51Yes.
42:52So you've earned me 255 on this.
42:55Bargain.
42:56That's 1255 quid.
42:58Well done.
42:59Oh.
43:00You're very welcome, sir.
43:01Yeah.
43:02Thank you very much.
43:02Yeah, that's made our day, hasn't it?
43:04We're in the money.
43:06We're in the money.
43:08We're in the...
43:09I'll get my coat.
43:11Grab mine.
43:12Ha ha ha.
