00:10But the good thing is we did not lose Hot Rod Garage, the show,

00:19So we have HRG Day, our national holiday, happening at the end of this week.
00:24This is a day where we celebrate our season with our friends and lots of cool cars
00:28and make use of the drag strip.
00:31Last season, we got a couple of people to stop by.
00:33But this time, they didn't say no, so we have a bunch of people stopping by.
00:37So we decided we would take the cars that are new this season and put a time on them.
00:42Yeah, they may need a little track time.
00:43A little track time, which includes the typhoon here.
00:46Right.
00:46The Volkswagen bug.
00:48We know it runs because there's actually a video of me screaming
00:50on the passenger seat of you driving around the freeway.
00:52Hold on, everybody.
00:54The Roadster.
00:55The Roadster is going to be a good time for sure.
00:57He's taking a land speed car.
00:58To the drag strip.
00:59And then we've also got the panel truck.
01:02Taking a push car to the drag strip.
01:06And the Grand National, which is not new, but it has a new lease on life.
01:09There's not really that much work to do except this little beauty right here.
01:14Yeah, we've got to get rid of the special effects generator on this thing.

01:17Otherwise known as a broken turbo.
01:19So when we took the typhoon out, we had a really good time with it.
01:23It drove good.
01:24It had good power.
01:25However, the guy behind us didn't have as good of a time because there was a lot of smoke coming out of this.
01:30We believe that it's probably just some turbo seals or something internally in the turbo that's leaking, causing that smoke.
01:37So we're going to go ahead and replace the turbo on this, which should be a simple job.

01:48We're working in a new shop to us where we don't even know where the tools are.
01:52We're working in very close quarters.
01:54So we have a lot of things to work around here.
01:57So who knows how long it's going to take.
01:59But if we do get it done in time, maybe we can pull the bug in and make a little bit of an upgrade.
02:04So for the bug, Cotton and Newbern left a perfectly good engine sitting on a pallet that they pulled out of the Baja bug they built.
02:13So we're going to bring that over and swap that in.
02:15So only three days to work, but the good news is we will have plenty of cars to take and party with at HRG Day at the end of the week.

03:24So this is a turbo from Sport Machines.
03:27It has an anti-search compressor and also has a billet wastegate with springs so you can adjust your boost where this one is 14 pounds of boost max.
03:37Now this is a boost management you're always talking about.
03:39Not quite, but one step in that direction, yes.
03:42I'm going to transfer the drain hose and then swap over the fittings to the new turbo.
03:46It should fit right back in there.
03:48When you have smoke like we had, hopefully that is our issue.
03:51There's a couple different things you can check.
03:53We could potentially have rebuilt that turbo, but when we can have an upgrade of some sort, we might as well do it.
04:00Always go for the upgrade.
04:00We love an upgrade.
04:03With this turbo comes an array of boost springs.
04:08And I was taking the other one off with three different size wrenches, a crow's foot, a pickle fork, and a couple different size sockets.
04:16I was thinking, man, if I only had allen bolts holding this thing together, I could use one tool and do it faster.

04:29Alex, which spring are we putting into this thing?
04:32The yellow spring that we took out was in the stock boost range, which was max on this turbo is 14 and a half.
04:38We don't do stock at HRG.

04:40So we're going to go with the red spring, which is a range of 17 to 20 pounds of boost.
04:45You have to get the combination that's right for your engine combination.
04:49Bigger is not always better.

04:55This compressor housing is supposed to help with surge.
05:00So that's the way the air moves on the inside of this.
05:03If you cut a housing open, it's not just a snail shape.
05:06It is.
05:07But there is science behind how the air moves and what that shape looks like inside.
05:13So even though these look very similar, the insides of the housing, they are a little bit different.
05:20Bunch of little imports in here.
05:22Everything echoes off these little cars.
05:23It's just weird.
05:24The only thing that doesn't echo is horsepower.

06:46And then after that, there's a bug and an engine that, once we get this out, do a little
06:50shuffling and move this here and that there, that can come in and we can get ready to pull

12:15So it's almost time to go on a parts run in our type thing.

13:06Thankfully, all of this is very readily available and it's local and it's easy.

13:11So we're adding to our basket and then we're going to stop back there and grab some more stuff.

13:15So we have a little bit of a list of things that we need to get.
13:19We need battery terminals, too, because mine busted earlier.

13:46We got the stuff that we needed to go on this.
13:48Time to get this thing back in the shape that it needs to be so that we can go in the bug
13:52and we can time ourselves and finish our competition.
13:55This had some aftermarket tan on it.
13:56It still has aftermarket tan.
13:57However, this was chrome, not feeling the chrome, and we got this nice, clean repop
14:04that has been electroplated.
14:06Normally, the oil cooler is just this component right here and it's just in the middle and
14:10the fan on the back of the alternator blows through it.
14:13It's enough to be efficient, but this is more horsepower, more carburetors.
14:17We want it to look small and simple, this little 36-horse style shroud.
14:21However, on the back of it is the doghouse.
14:24So, an oversized oil cooler slides right up inside there and it's getting much air blown
14:29over it.
14:33Man, it's like it was made for it.
14:36Now, this goes over everything.
14:40It is time to put the fan, which is also mounted to the alternator on, and that should be coming
14:44in right about now.
14:54Okay, alternators install the 36-horse shroud with, allow me to say it one more time, doghouse
15:03oil cooler mounted on the back is all good.
15:05We got all new tin, not just the stuff that you see.
15:08That's kind of cool.
15:09We have to make a couple of small brackets, one of them to hold the coil, and we have
15:14to install an electric fuel pump.
15:15That motor has a mechanical fuel pump.
15:17This one is going to have an electric fuel pump in the front, because you know why?
15:21It's a pump, not a suck.
15:25There was all kinds of glue and gunk and oil and nasty stuff back here, so I went ahead
15:30and cleaned it with brake clean to get all the oil off and things like that.
15:33Scrape what I couldn't.
15:34Is it perfect?
15:35No.
15:36But is it going to look much better than it did?
15:38Yes.
15:38I'm going to spray some paint on it, and then I think we're going to let the paint dry tonight.
15:43You know what I'm saying?
15:43Yeah.
15:47This is actually a truck bed coating, so it's got a little texture to it, that way it covers
15:51up any imperfections.
15:53I do need a couple more coats, because I just like to get it a little bit thicker.
15:56But overall, very happy with it.
15:59I know I should have masked it off, but we're in Super Street Garage, and I don't see stuff
16:03to mask stuff off around here, so forgive me.
16:06I'll clean the overspray off.
16:11Okay, it is a new day here at Hot Rod Garage.
16:13So it is time to put this in, and we can start making some forward progress.
16:18And then we have to do a coil mount, and put the two carbs on, and crankcase ventilation.
16:24It's called a puke box.
16:26Puke box.
16:27Oil splashes into it, and when you stop driving, it drains back into the motor.
16:31So time to go in.
16:32Yeah, I'll push from the back.
16:33So originally, these cars had six-volt generators, and the other engine that came out had an
16:45alternator.
16:46It had been converted, but it was much smaller than this 12-volt alternator that's on here,
16:50so it's just giving us a little bit of clearance room.
16:53It's going to fit.
16:53It just was a little harder to get there.
16:55Oh, it's going to fit.
16:57Oh, yeah.
16:58Whoa.
16:59Pretty close, right?
17:00So the 1641 question mark is officially installed.
17:04Alex is under there tightening up a couple of the bottom bolts, and actually the driver's
17:08side top bolt, because nuts are actually in the case for that.
17:11They don't put a nut on this side.
17:12I think the next bet is going to be to massage those dual, empty carburetors on this thing.
17:20What if they're going to fit without cutting?
17:21All right, we are putting J-tubes on now to go with our exhaust system instead of the
17:35heater box that were on there, so this car will no longer have a heater, but that's okay.
17:45J-tubes installed, exhausts installed.
17:47Drop the car back down, start hooking up the little things, fuel line, puke box, wires.
17:54Getting closer.
17:58Dual carbs?
17:59Something this car has never seen.
18:01How many quarters around this place?
18:04I built all the wire separators, got those on.
18:07Got the vacuum line from left to right, dual carburetors, way to sink them.
18:12Last thing I have to mount on there is going to be crankcase ventilation.
18:14Before I can put this on, I have to make sure the throttle linkage isn't interfering with
18:20anything, the rewiring isn't interfering, the vacuum line, sparkler wires, kind of get
18:25to put it all together at the same time and make sure it all fits.
18:29So it's time to test it out.
18:38I think it is time to test it out.
18:41Mark, give it a crank.

18:51So, can you hear the grinding noise?
18:53Yeah.
18:54So that is the fan inside the shroud, just making a funny noise, so we're going to adjust
18:58that.
18:58Okay.
18:59And the carbs are way out of sync, so.
19:01So, uh, so we can adjust.
19:03Yeah.
19:03I feel good about it.
19:04Okay.
19:05On to the little things.
19:06It starts, though.
19:07Yeah.
19:07We haven't broken anything.
19:11So this is a carb sink tool.
19:13We have two single barrel carbs on here.
19:16I put it on here.
19:16It measures the amount of air that's flowing through this little pinturi right here.
19:20What that does is cause a little float inside there to move.
19:24Gives you a reference to how much air is actually flowing into the carburetor.
19:27And I'm able to move it from this side to that side.
19:30And use the throttle linkage to synchronize each carburetor.
19:34Once it's all synced and calibrated, I lock it down.
19:36The idle basically is set.
19:38Then we just move to the air fuel adjustment screws.
19:41And make it run maybe not quite so fast.
19:44See a little black smoke in there.
19:45The idea of synchronizing the carburetor is that if you were to accelerate and this one
19:49were to open before that one, there'd be a big vibration.
19:52So as you step on the gas pedal, which is what I'm going to do now, it pulls this carburetor
19:56open and that carburetor open at the same time.
20:00Sweet.
20:01So after syncing both carbs, tightening down the throttle linkage.
20:05I feel pretty good about that.
20:08I'm going to mount the foil.
20:09I marked a little spot.
20:09I discussed it with Loose Management.
20:12She said that this is where she likes it.
20:14So this is where it's going to go.
20:15Handled.
20:26Hey, that's good.
20:29That's a whole new engine.
20:34Does it clear the bumper?

22:02This is the second annual where we celebrate friends that love cars and horsepower.

22:14And this year, HRG Day is bigger than it was last year.
22:17This year, we even got a Bounce House.

22:22We can drag a bunch of our own cars out here that we worked on all season.
22:25We are taking all of these down the track today to put a time on them.
22:29So we did a little bit of work this time.
22:31The Bug got a new engine.

22:33We got the Typhoon.
22:34We put a new turbo on it.
22:35And that thing came to life.
22:36We're about to prove that to you right now.
22:38Yeah, and they're both in a pretty happy state.
22:40I love the sound of cars in the morning.
22:45And something about it being on HRG Day just makes me happy.

22:58While the rest of these cars don't have a quarter mile of time on them, the Grand National does.
23:01But it's different track conditions out here today, different weather, so it deserves another attempt.
23:07And the one that's at the end of the lineup may or may not make a pass down the track.

25:04Okay, so Alex just made a pretty impressive pass for a Volkswagen Beetle with a mystery motor in it.
25:09I think I might be able to match that.

25:42I need a bigger motor, different cage, stronger parts, and I want to see bug wheelies next year.
25:48So I left pretty decent. It felt pretty good. It felt boost.
25:52I felt that actual boost management that Alex is always talking about.
25:55And then when I went in the second, this was in my hand.
25:58I was just like, that doesn't seem right.
26:00So then I was batting at the shifter.
26:01I think we'll make one more pass and see if I can actually make it shift on time.

27:10So we are well underway at HRG Day,
27:30and I am very impressed that people actually heard the HRG call and showed up.

27:36Generally, when we come up here to Famoso Drag Strip and borrow the track,
27:41it's generally just us and a few of our friends and the production crew and everything.
