00:00I don't want to enjoy life there, but, like, it's just sad. Like, I don't know.
00:02No, that's a rehabilitative... See, that's how jail is supposed to rehabilitate people.
00:08But I don't need to be rehabilitated. Like, I don't need that.
00:10No, not you. I know you don't.
00:11The newly released documentary about the case of Mackenzie Shirrilla and the crash that killed her boyfriend and another passenger
00:18has skyrocketed to number one on Netflix.
00:21And as more people learn about this tragic case and more about Shirrilla and her family, the fallout has grown.
00:29From Mackenzie's dad being suspended from his job to claims that her first on-camera interview didn't match up with
00:36how she was acting behind bars and a very revealing jail phone call.
00:40We are taking a closer look at what we've learned since the release of the crash.
00:45Welcome to Sidebar, presented by Law & Crime. I'm Jesse Weber.
00:53Hell on Wheels.
00:54That is what then 17-year-old Mackenzie Shirrilla was called back in 2022, when investigators say she intentionally drove
01:03a car into the side of a building in Strongsville, Ohio, killing her boyfriend, 20-year-old Dominic Russo, and
01:10his friend, 19-year-old Davian Flanagan.
01:12And before we even get into what is happening right now with this Netflix documentary and the fallout, the reaction,
01:18the criticism, the blowback from what Shirrilla was saying on tape, I just got to put all this into context
01:24for you, okay?
01:25So crash reports that were submitted by experts revealed that Shirrilla was going nearly 100 miles per hour with no
01:33sign of braking when she slammed the car into a brick wall.
01:37The Toyota Camry was seen on several cameras in the area before the crash on July 31st, and one actually
01:43caught the moment of impact, and it is just horrifying.
01:48To give you an idea of this, a 911 call from a passerby came in to dispatch at around 6
01:53a.m.
01:54Take a listen.
01:54There's a car that smashed up against the building.
01:58I didn't go up to it because I was on my motorcycle.
02:02I didn't know if I'd get stuck, but they ran the curb.
02:04I can see the, they smashed the sign and hit the building.
02:08The car just crashed.
02:09What law enforcement saw when they got to that scene was awful.
02:19Radio, there's an occupant inside.
02:28Send us a squad now.
02:30We're going to bust the window out.
02:33Send us some more units.
02:36Any more units to progress now, Amita?
02:40Now!
02:41What am I doing?
02:52This is not a fresh accident either.
02:55She's been here for a while.
03:14Radio, we've got at least two occupants in here.
03:16No one's moving.
03:20Oh, my God.
03:25Oh, my God.
03:26Times three, guys.
03:28Radio, three occupants.
03:31No one's conscious.
03:33No one's conscious.
03:36No one's conscious.
03:37No one's breathing.
03:40Bust that window out.
03:47Rookie.
03:53Oh, my God, dude.
03:54Yeah, this smashed car was in multiple pieces.
03:58Police officers, they struggled to get the victims inside.
04:01According to police reports, debris was scattered in a 70-foot radius.
04:05There was a piece of the car that was even found on the roof of the building that Sharilla hit.
04:10Now, Dominic and Davian, they were killed, dead in the car.
04:13But Sharilla, she somehow survived this impact, this crash.
04:18And she was, you know, life-flighted to a hospital with very serious injuries.
04:23Babe, what did they tell you?
04:24Nothing.
04:25Okay, she was life-flighted here.
04:27Yeah, I wouldn't know that.
04:28Okay.
04:29No.
04:30What else was there?
04:31You want to sit down.
04:32Oh, my God.
04:33Oh, my God.
04:36How do you say this?
04:38Progress in Alameda.
04:39Car in two of building.
04:41Two are deceased in the vehicle.
04:42Daughter's driving.
04:44Who died?
04:46I don't know who I am.
04:47There's one that we don't know.
04:48His name's Jacob.
04:49Does anyone know Jacob?
04:50Dom?
04:51No.
04:51Stop.
04:52Let him talk.
04:53Guys, I know.
04:55We've been dealing with this.
04:57Your daughter's okay.
04:58She's talking to us.
04:59I talked to her.
05:00Okay?
05:01Your daughter's alive.
05:02So an officer then speaks with Sharilla's parents that are in the hospital waiting room,
05:07letting them know the information that they had so far.
05:09And then this officer goes back to speak with them again after getting more details about
05:14what investigators found at the scene.
05:15Now, to clarify, at the time, the officers believed that Dominic was someone named Jacob,
05:22so you might see a little bit of confusion there, but take a listen.
05:25Oh, God, help me.
05:29All right.
05:30I've got to talk to you one more time.
05:32Let's go let you know where we stand as a police department, okay?
05:36Where we stand today, okay?
05:39Full transparency here.
05:40There's drugs in the car.
05:41She had a bag of mushrooms on her and a scale.
05:44Full transparency, guys.
05:45I'm sorry.
05:45I'm ripping the band-aid off, okay?
05:47Drugs in the car.
05:49It's a mess, okay?
05:53We're not going to do anything with the blood draw or anything here, but it will probably
05:57be subpoenaed, just so you guys know.
06:00They're going to subpoena for a blood draw for the sample, okay?
06:06Since she's unconscious, I really will.
06:07If you guys could talk.
06:09If she wakes up, we need a name of that passenger, okay?
06:12Wait, you don't know what it is?
06:13We don't.
06:15All I know is his name is Jacob.
06:17That's it.
06:18No.
06:19Yeah.
06:21She was driving, one in the back seat.
06:24One in the front.
06:24Jacob was in the front.
06:26Davion in the back.
06:27Okay.
06:28Okay.
06:37You're the parent.
06:39You have the right to know.
06:41This is serious.
06:42Yeah, so investigators, they found baggies containing mushrooms and marijuana and then
06:47cash and a scale with suspected drug residue on it, a marijuana vape pen, a bong, all in
06:54connection or associated with Mackenzie Chirilla.
06:56And the toxicology test done on Chirilla found that while she had these kind of trace amounts
07:01of THC in her system, she didn't appear to have taken any mushrooms or, you know, that
07:06she drank any alcohol in the hours before this crash.
07:09In other words, this wasn't a case of her being intoxicated.
07:12And we were, me and him were the first ones on scene to discover.
07:15He was awake but not awake?
07:18So she was back.
07:18In and out of consciousness.
07:22She had to be fully extracted from the vehicle.
07:25IFD.
07:28I know she has a severe leg injury.
07:31Um, like I said, she was speaking.
07:35She was speaking, okay?
07:37And she had her seatbelt on.
07:40Yes.
07:41We had to cut it off to get her out.
07:43Stop.
07:44Yeah, that probably saved her life.
07:46100% saved her life.
07:47She had her seatbelt on.
07:49Ugh.
07:50I don't believe the others did.
07:51Oh my God.
07:54Oh my God.
07:56She got it on.
07:57It was at Progress in Alameda.
08:00Like I said, they hit a building at a very high speed.
08:03She had it on her.
08:04She did not hit another vehicle.
08:05Those were on her or like on a person or just on her?
08:08Was it somebody else's?
08:09Could it be that she never hit that person?
08:12What does that mean?
08:13They were talking.
08:14Yeah.
08:15Yeah.
08:16That's at least your words at this point, guys.
08:17Oh yeah.
08:18All right.
08:18Well, I'm just trying to gather information.
08:20I'm an information gatherer.
08:22Yes.
08:23I'm just giving you what I know.
08:23Okay.
08:24As investigators started to look into what might have led up to all this, what led up to
08:28this tragedy, they realized that Dominic and Mackenzie, who had been dating for several
08:33years, this was a rather tumultuous relationship.
08:37The two had been living together.
08:38There were recordings that came out after the crash that revealed these threats that
08:43Shirilla had made to Dominic.
09:10Going back to the documentary that we're talking about, the crash, there were claims that were
09:14made in this documentary, that Shirilla had previously threatened to crash a car that
09:19she was driving with Dominic inside.
09:21You add to the story, apparently Shirilla had these videos up on social media where the
09:26argument was she didn't appear that remorseful over what happened after the crash, apparently
09:32talking about a brand deal.
09:34She was also accused of dressing up like a corpse for Halloween with her friends.
09:38Now her friends said it was just like to look like a rapper, but you can understand why that
09:42would look problematic given what just happened.
09:44And then there were these posts from her social media that seemed to show her driving recklessly,
09:49smoking what looked like marijuana while behind the wheel of the car.
09:52So yeah, problematic, problematic to say the least.
09:55And she also, by the way, even posted a video seemingly showing her at a concert in a
10:01wheelchair after the crash.
10:03Shirilla was arrested in November, 2022.
10:05She was charged with a laundry list of crimes, and this included murder and aggravated vehicular
10:10homicide for allegedly driving into the wall on purpose.
10:14And interestingly, a key piece of evidence against Shirilla, which prosecutors talked about
10:18at trial, wasn't even featured that much in the Netflix documentary because prosecutors
10:23had argued that there was cell phone data that showed McKenzie in the same area as the
10:29crash days before.
10:31The argument was, is that she was doing a test or a dry run before the crash.
10:36By the way, if you want any more information about the McKenzie Shirilla case, if you go
10:41on the Law and Crime Plus app, you go to Case Files, we have everything that you would
10:46need to know about that case up there.
10:49So I encourage everybody to go check it out.
10:51Again, Law and Crime Plus.
10:53Now, to be clear, Shirilla and her family have always maintained her innocence, saying she
10:57had some sort of medical episode, a medical condition that could cause her to black out,
11:02specifically POTS.
11:03We know that this is a condition that can cause dizziness, fainting.
11:06And while that was her defense at trial, by the way, Shirilla didn't testify.
11:10And by the way, going back to what happened when she was arrested, she seemed shocked that
11:15she was being taken into custody, and so did her parents.
11:18What happens now?
11:19What am I doing?
11:20Okay, well, McKenzie's 18.
11:21So she's-
11:23The lawyer said they called and said that you don't have to talk to any cops because she's
11:27a legal counsel.
11:27Yeah, and we read over her rights because she's 18.
11:30Yeah, we are not going to ask her any questions.
11:32We have nothing to ask her, so we're not going to ask her anything anyway.
11:36So when we're done with our booking process, she will likely be processed downtown.
11:42We'll transport her downtown.
11:43I need to speak to my daughter because you guys aren't allowed to speak to her at all.
11:46That's from the lawyer.
11:48He does not want you guys speaking to her.
11:50And I can get him on the phone, and she can tell you that over the phone if that works,
11:53or I can go in and tell her not to open her mouth to.
11:56How you guys did this on the weekend is just-
11:58Well, you know, I just go, hey, there's a warrant for her.
12:00We would have brought her right down here with no problem.
12:03It's just unbelievable.
12:06So the warrant was issued today, so we executed it today.
12:09The warrant wasn't issued earlier today.
12:11Well, you even made a phone call, couldn't you?
12:12You had your creeper out in front of the yard watching.
12:16So she can't take any, she's an adult.
12:18She can't take any phone calls right now.
12:21Now she'll be transferred downtown.
12:22I don't know when.
12:23Service has called her advice.
12:24She'll be transferred downtown.
12:25Okay, well, I still need to speak to my daughter so she understands whatever.
12:28It's not the same thing you think you guys.
12:30Okay, and I don't know about the phone.
12:31I would have to ask about that.
12:33Can you go find this mine?
12:34It's not hers.
12:35I mean, I do need it.
12:36I have other children.
12:38That's how we communicate.
12:39Yeah.
12:40That's how we communicate.
12:41I do need my phone.
12:42I mean, if you had to roll out the whole mask to pick up an 18-year-old girl, we
12:46could hardly walk out of a hospital visit.
12:49It's just beyond me.
12:50So we follow the law, and that's what we're doing today.
12:53So the phone that was in her hand is the one that we took, but I have to check with
12:58the detective to find out what's going on with that.
13:00I don't know the answer to that.
13:01Can we find out I do need it, like, right now?
13:04Let me at least get it.
13:05I have another child.
13:07I get it.
13:07I get it.
13:08So we don't let her.
13:09Can you start here?
13:12Am I going to be allowed to have a two-minute conversation with her?
13:15You cannot talk to her.
13:21She was just brought in.
13:23They're going to process her.
13:24As soon as they get the time for her to make a phone call, she will be able to make
13:27a phone call.
13:28You just need to advise her.
13:29She has a lawyer.
13:30She's a lawyer.
13:31She does have a lawyer.
13:31She is 18 years old, and she could speak that.
13:34Yeah, but she's a dumb 18-year-old that just turned 18, and you guys are...
13:39All the kids nowadays are dumb.
13:41And these guys are going to take advantage of it.
13:42She's not allowed to speak to you guys.
13:44I'm telling you that.
13:44Her attorney can call us.
13:46Don't ask her any questions.
13:48She's not allowed to speak to you.
13:50Now, something else that wasn't or didn't appear to be addressed in the documentary was
13:54Shrilla's apparent attempt to leave the hospital to go to Dominic's funeral.
13:59And according to investigative reports, officers at the hospital for another case,
14:04they were approached by a sergeant who told them about Shrilla's, I guess you would call it,
14:09attempted leave, attempted escape.
14:11It says, quote,
14:12Sgt. Doyle stated to us that Mackenzie Shrilla came to MetroHealth as a juvenile, but while
14:17she was being treated in the hospital over the course of several days, she had a birthday
14:21and turned 18, thus making her an adult.
14:23One night before the night of Dominic Russo's funeral, she tried to escape and leave the
14:27hospital.
14:27He stated that the police were called to her room to intervene.
14:30While he was in the room, he stated he spoke to Mackenzie Shrilla's father, who called
14:34them.
14:34The sergeant stated that her father, Stephen Shrilla, stated to him that they cannot allow their
14:38daughter to leave the hospital.
14:39Sergeant Doyle stated to him that she is an adult and they cannot physically keep her
14:44there at the hospital if she wanted to leave because she was now an adult.
14:47Sergeant Doyle stated to us that Mr. Shrilla stated to him that they had to keep her in
14:51the hospital, quote, because she already tried to kill herself and she killed those two boys
14:56and, quote, they can't allow her to leave the hospital because she's suicidal.
15:00Now, that is really interesting because there had been speculation that Mackenzie Shrilla
15:06was trying to end her own life when she crashed the car but survived.
15:10But that information came to police kind of secondhand.
15:13So they interviewed Sergeant Doyle to set the record straight.
15:16And as it turns out, some of the details kind of got muddled during this, you know, game
15:20of law enforcement telephone.
15:22So take a look.
15:22We're dispatched to Mackenzie Shrilla's room.
15:26Can you tell me about that thing?
15:27So we were dispatched up to the room for a disturbance.
15:31Once we arrived up on the room, she was upset that her, you know, with her dad.
15:37So I was in the room with her and her, like, her dad and I, if I recall correctly,
15:42her mom was in the room too.
15:45We asked the dad to step out.
15:46He was hysterical, crying, like, just, you know, all lame.
15:50Like, you know, just all upset about his daughter.
15:53And, like, and so then, like, you know, we're trying to calm him down, calm him down.
15:58And he's like, you know, you guys probably know who I am.
16:01And, like, you know, you probably saw it all on the news and stuff like that.
16:07So, and he's like, at the one, at one point in the conversation, he's like, I feel like
16:11my daughter needs a psych evaluation.
16:14And, um, and he's like, you know, because, like, you know, she's not, you know, thinking
16:19clearly, um, and, and, you know, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.
16:24Like, I, I'll be honest, like, that was back in August.
16:27Like, word for word what he said, like, I, I don't recall every word that he said.
16:32Like, he was pretty hysterical, he was pretty upset.
16:35And, you know, we sat on the, like, at the waiting room down the hall.
16:39And, and that was, like, she was upset with her dad because, like, she wanted the lady
16:45to go to the funerals.
16:46And, and, like, he's, like, like, I guess they got in some kind of argument about it.
16:51And that, that was it, you know.
16:52So, any, uh, insinuation or any statements that the dad made about his daughter being
16:59suicidal today or in the past?
17:03No.
17:04Like, he just, the only thing that I can recall on is, like, he just made that comment.
17:09I feel like she needs a psych evaluation, you know, because she's not thinking clearly.
17:13What that means, like, I.
17:15Okay.
17:17Yeah, so he, it's open for interpretation, basically.
17:20He did not kind of go on to explain.
17:23And I said, you know, did you guys ever charge, you know, charge out the, you know, female
17:27yet from the, like, crash?
17:29And he said, and, like, the one, the one guy's like, no, not yet.
17:33Like, like, kind of, like, saying, like, it's coming soon.
17:36So, I said, yeah, we had a little reaction with the dad.
17:39I, I said, and I pretty much told them the same thing I told you, like, told you.
17:43But at the end of it, like, I, I said, I'm like, oh, I, I, I, I said, I, I
17:49heard that
17:50she intentionally did it.
17:51Meaning, like, I heard that she intentionally did it through a other law enforcement source.
17:56Gotcha.
17:57So.
17:58Okay.
18:01So, at no point was it that you heard it from Sharila's dad?
18:07No.
18:07Okay.
18:11Did, can I ask who you heard it from?
18:14I, I was at a party and, like, there was a bunch of cops there and it was, like, third
18:19party.
18:20Okay.
18:20Um.
18:20Was it, uh, SPD officers?
18:23No.
18:24It was a other officer that, you know, knew, it was a kind of, like, third party.
18:28Third party, so just cops.
18:29Yeah.
18:29Chopping it up.
18:30Yeah.
18:31Okay.
18:32And so, at no point in your conversation, just to be clear, did you say that Mr. Sharila
18:40told you my daughter needs an eval because she tried to kill herself and in the process
18:45killed the two boys.
18:47Any reference to Sharila killing the two boys?
18:50No.
18:50Okay.
18:51In the end, we know that Mackenzie Sharila opted for a Benz trial.
18:54So, instead of going to a jury, she went in front of a judge.
18:57And so, the judge would be the trier of fact here.
18:59And the judge saw the argument, saw the evidence, and made a decision.
19:02The judge found Mackenzie Sharila guilty of all 12 counts.
19:08Murder, felonious assault, aggravated vehicular homicide, drug possession, possessing criminal
19:13tools.
19:14And Mackenzie Sharila was sentenced to two life terms in prison, served at the same time,
19:20with the possibility of parole after 15 years.
19:23Now, Sharila has filed numerous appeals, all of which have reportedly been denied.
19:28Her family says they're going to continue their fight to prove her innocence.
19:32But you've got to go back to this documentary, the Netflix documentary, The Crash.
19:35So, Sharila has made certain statements in this documentary from behind bars at the Ohio
19:39Reformatory.
19:40And the argument is, is that what she said has, you know, met quite the reaction, seemingly
19:46caused quite a stir.
19:47Like, for example, where she says in the doc, I'm not a monster.
19:51I'm not saying I'm innocent.
19:52I was a driver of a tragedy, but I'm not a murderer.
19:55She also said that regarding Dominic, we would have probably been married by now.
19:59We argued.
20:00We got back together.
20:00We broke up.
20:01We got back together.
20:02It was rocky, but it was good.
20:04We were in love.
20:05And again, she would say she doesn't remember anything from the night of the crash, saying,
20:10quote, I remember turning on the street and then I'm waking up in the hospital the next
20:13day and my whole life is shattered.
20:15Now, we've heard Sharila speak before about her actions and we heard it during her sentencing
20:20hearing.
20:20In case you haven't seen it, take a look.
20:22Is there anyone else?
20:23I would like Mackenzie to address the court.
20:26Mackenzie, you don't have to speak if you don't want to.
20:28It's up to you.
20:28I don't know.
20:29Okay.
20:30You can say it if it's more comfortable.
20:32Whatever's better for you.
20:34The families of Donna, Davia, I'm so deeply sorry.
20:41I hope one day you can see I would never let this happen or do it on purpose.
20:46I wish I could remember what happened.
20:48I'm just so sorry.
20:49I'm heartbroken.
20:50I love Don and Davia.
20:51We were all friends and Don was my soulmate.
20:54I wish I could take all your pain away.
20:56And I'm so sorry.
20:58And to my family, thank you for the support and all the love you guys give.
21:02Thank you for fighting with me.
21:03I love you all so much.
21:05I'm done.
21:09By the way, her mom also spoke at sentencing and this too caused quite a stir.
21:17She would never, ever, ever murder the love of her life.
21:22Okay.
21:23The Halloween.
21:25For three months after the accident, she would only wear his clothes.
21:29She would only eat the snacks he ate.
21:31She would only listen to the music he wrote.
21:34Okay.
21:35She was laying in bed for three months crying.
21:38There was a shrine of him next to her with photos and things that he liked and this flower
21:43that lights up that he got her because he wanted it to be fresh and alive forever.
21:47It's like a little Beauty and the Beast flower.
21:50Okay.
21:50She's got this shrine of him next to her.
21:52So she was crying for three months.
21:54So her friends asked if she wanted to go out trick-or-treating.
21:57It was Halloween.
21:58And it was an OU.
21:59And she didn't even want to go.
22:00She said, I don't know.
22:01Should I go?
22:01She couldn't even walk yet, barely.
22:04So I told her, I said, baby, please go.
22:07It's Halloween.
22:07You've been laying for three months crying, only listening to his music.
22:11Please go have just a moment of fun.
22:13A moment of fun.
22:14So we told her to go.
22:16My husband drove her.
22:18I brought her back home.
22:19She just needed a second of fun from losing her whole world, her whole world.
22:26So that was us.
22:28We told her to go.
22:29And that concert she went to with Dom's cousin, Abby, they picked her up.
22:34They brought her there.
22:35That was Mackenzie and Dom and Abby all decided to go to this concert together
22:39while they were in the hospital.
22:41That was for Dom.
22:43Everything she did after the accident was either in honor of him,
22:46to be close to him, or just to be by him any way that she can.
22:52She's just like devastated and tragic.
22:54He was the air that she breathes.
22:57Okay?
22:57And they went with his cousin.
23:00We spent all kinds of time with him after the accident.
23:04And what was the other thing?
23:06I'm hearing an awful lot about your daughter.
23:09I'm not hearing very much about the two dead people.
23:11Dominic, okay?
23:12I'm asking you for leniency because this was a tragic accident that she does not remember.
23:18And Davion, we don't, he's a new friend.
23:21And I'm so sorry.
23:23What does that mean?
23:23Is life is worth less?
23:25No, no, no, no.
23:27No.
23:28God, no.
23:29Not at all.
23:30They all loved each other.
23:32They all spent every day together.
23:34You know what I mean?
23:34I don't know too much for him.
23:35And isn't that part of the problem, Mrs. Sherald?
23:38Sorry?
23:38Isn't that part of the problem, that they all trusted each other?
23:42Isn't that part of...
23:43It's not a problem at all.
23:44It was wonderful.
23:45It's a problem of how they all ended up in the car together and two of them ended up dead.
23:48I understand.
23:49I understand what it looks like.
23:51I'm saying that it was a tragic accident.
23:54She would never...
23:55No, we're going to have to disagree on that.
23:56I understand.
23:57Right.
23:57Yeah, so Sherald's parents, Natalie and Steve, they were both part of this documentary too.
24:01And that decision and their comments have caused backlash.
24:07For example, Steve Sherald worked as an art and digital media teacher at a school out in Cleveland.
24:11It's called Mary Queen of Peace School.
24:13This week, it was reported, he was put on administrative leave.
24:16This is according to Cleveland 19 News.
24:18The school administrators reportedly sent this email to parents that said, quote,
24:49Dear Mary Queen of Peace School parents, families, and guardians,
24:51personnel investigation, please know that we are reviewing the matter and we'll provide additional communication as appropriate.
24:57We appreciate your continued support of the Mary Queen of Peace School community.
25:01Now, Steve spoke with TMZ Live after his suspension.
25:05And according to him, the diocese that oversees the school had been just inundated with complaints
25:12about his participation in this Netflix show, this Netflix documentary, and especially his comments about marijuana use by teens.
25:18Because in the documentary, he said, quote,
25:21I don't have a problem with her smoking dope.
25:23If you're going to smoke a drug, that's the one I believe you should take.
25:26But Steve told TMZ his words were twisted by the producers.
25:30And that the filmmakers had condensed hours and hours of footage and interviews down into just a few sound bites.
25:37That it was taken out of context.
25:38He claims he had no idea that his daughter had allegedly been using marijuana while driving.
25:43And have reportedly said if he had known, he would have had a huge problem with it.
25:47And then to be clear, there's a lot of backlash after this documentary premiere that has been leveled at Mackenzie
25:53Shirlis' parents.
25:54Because one commenter on Reddit wrote, her parents are villains also for not disciplining this petulant child.
26:01Her temper tantrums were allowed to flourish unchecked.
26:03And the result is an out-of-control adult who cannot manage her feelings.
26:07Those parents are still making excuses for their bad parenting and her murderous behavior.
26:12And just to go back to this, the big part about this documentary is Shirilla, right?
26:17I mean, this is the only interview with her about the crash.
26:21She told the producers that she still, again, has no memory of what happened.
26:25The only thing she says makes sense to her is that she had a medical episode.
26:28She talked about life behind bars.
26:30I mean, she said, quote, it's really hard every day in here.
26:32I try to wake up and be the best person I can be every day.
26:35Stay out of trouble.
26:36There's not a moment that doesn't pass where I don't think about Dom and Davian.
26:41However, there's an unexpected moment toward the end of this documentary that we got to talk about.
26:47Okay, it shows Shirilla speaking with who appears to be a lawyer off screen about how her interview is going.
26:55So Netflix's fan site, ta-dum, wrote up an article about the film and said this about a big twist
27:02at the end.
27:03Quote, it's only after Mackenzie finishes speaking that the filmmakers reveal her attorney has been in the room the entire
27:09time.
27:09Her demeanor demonstrably shifts as she checks in on how she's coming across.
27:13Quote, I don't want to force anything and just say too much or sound crazy, she says to her lawyer
27:18before turning back to the camera to say, quote, I'm big on the no intent.
27:22There was no intent whatsoever there.
27:24I have excessive amounts of remorse for Dominic, Davian, both of their families.
27:28This was not intentional and I will do everything I can to prove that to the world and the families
27:33and that's it.
27:34Now, multiple ways to look at that.
27:36Some could say maybe she's manufacturing how she's coming across.
27:40Another way you could say, look, she's making a statement, of course, she's going to consult with her lawyer.
27:44But when it comes to how Sharilla maybe really is acting behind bars, who's the real Mackenzie Sharilla?
27:53So we are getting an insight from somebody who apparently spent some time with her behind bars.
27:59Also, by the way, jailhouse phone calls we'll talk about.
28:02So, look, I had a chance to speak with a woman named Kat Crowder on my News Nation show, Jesse
28:08Weber Live, last night.
28:09And she spent some time locked up at the same time as Sharilla at this correctional facility.
28:16And she claimed, look, while she wouldn't say she was friends with Mackenzie Sharilla, she observed how she acted behind
28:23those prison walls.
28:24A very light demeanor, if that makes sense.
28:27So lots of laughing, lots of giggling, you know, makeup done every day.
28:32It was never this dark, smug, tough girl act that was in this video trying to portray some sort of
28:39remorse.
28:40I never, you know, I don't know what somebody's thinking.
28:42I don't know what's going on in her head.
28:44But from my observations, there was never any, you know, behaviors that looked like somebody who was remorseful.
28:50Towards the end of my sentence, before I was about to be released, I saw Mackenzie walking the track on
28:59the yard.
28:59And she did have large hickeys.
29:01And it's come out since then that she's had multiple girlfriends since being incarcerated, doing who knows what.
29:09So that just had to result from another one of those.
29:13Was she a mean girl in the prison?
29:17Um, I do say that she wanted to be like Regina George.
29:21I mean, just the way that she did her makeup, the way that she, I mean, it was like she
29:27was going out to a club or something.
29:30Or she thought she was going to be famous or photographed.
29:34She would wear her clothes altered so they would be form-fitting.
29:37And she would make fun of people who had less than she did because she was, well, taken care of
29:44inside prison.
29:45Yeah, so Kat said she never saw any signs of POTS either.
29:49That after speaking with others who had more direct contact with Mackenzie Schirilla,
29:53that the crash, according to Schirilla, allegedly what she told these people,
29:57wasn't really due to POTS, but maybe being high.
30:00So this idea of mixed stories, again, this is according to Kat.
30:03But others are coming forward online to talk about their experiences with Mackenzie Schirilla,
30:07including one person on Reddit who wrote,
30:09I went to high school with all of them, but Mackenzie and Davian were a couple years ahead of me.
30:13My friend played football with Davian and knows Mackenzie's parents.
30:16And her and I are both friendly with Mackenzie's sister.
30:19We both think her family is in denial and that her actions were intentional.
30:22It's an awful situation all around.
30:24Obviously, no way to confirm that this person really knows them, but something to think about.
30:28People Magazine also obtained this apparent jail phone call between Mackenzie Schirilla and her mom,
30:35where Schirilla seemingly complains about her circumstances.
30:40I don't want to enjoy life there, but it's just sad.
30:42I don't know.
30:42No, that's a rehabilitative...
30:44See, that's how jail is supposed to rehabilitate people.
30:48But I don't need to be rehabilitated.
30:49I don't need that.
30:50No, not you.
30:50I know you don't.
30:51I feel like I want to live off the grid.
30:53And I'm just thinking about how I'm just going to be old when I get out of jail.
30:57And like, I don't know, like, I'm not going to be able to have kids or like a family.
31:01What?
31:01You said that.
31:02I'm just scared they're going to be like, you have the death penalty or you're going to life for 40
31:06years.
31:06I know.
31:09Well, let us, let us, let us do what we're doing, okay?
31:15Just living right now.
31:17You know, one of the pieces of criticism of this documentary is that it doesn't appear to include
31:21an audio conversation between Mackenzie and her mom where the argument is that they talk in, like, gibberish,
31:29allegedly coded language, according to people, that police believe she said to her mom,
31:35Can we tell the police I had a seizure?
31:37Can we tell the police something like that?
31:38There's also reports that Natalie Shrilla is posting on behalf of her daughter on her Instagram page.
31:44The last post is from February, a selfie of Shrilla, and the caption says,
31:48From Mackenzie, thank you to those who see through the lies and to those who take time out of their
31:53day
31:54to form their own opinion as to the truth of what actually happened.
31:56I'm not perfect.
31:57I never will be.
31:58But I am not guilty of murder.
32:00Like any young couple, Dom and I had our disagreements and arguments.
32:04However, I always loved Dom and would never do anything to hurt him, Davian, or anyone else I care about.
32:08I will respectfully and peacefully continue to fight for my innocence through the proper legal channels
32:13to all of those who speak out on my behalf to raise awareness of this wrongful conviction.
32:18Words cannot describe my sincere appreciation for your support and for being my voice.
32:22Continue to scream, free Mackenzie Shrilla at the top of your lungs.
32:26If it can happen to her, it can happen to us.
32:29Follow free Mackenzie Shrilla on Facebook and TikTok for the truth.
32:33And it's signed, Mackenzie's support team.
32:36Now, it is possible that Mackenzie Shrilla could be paroled as early as 2037,
32:41according to the Department of Corrections when she's in her early 30s.
32:43So something to look out for.
32:45But the judge did say during her sentencing that she expects Mackenzie Shrilla won't be let out anytime soon, if
32:53ever.
32:53So for now, Mackenzie Shrilla remains locked up at the Ohio Reformatory for Women in Ohio.
