MUMMA ELEPHANT TO THE RESCUE AS SHE CHASES OFF HYENA WITH PIX AND VID By Shuk Yee Tsang Dramatic footage captures the moment a protective elephant mother springs into action, chasing away a hyena that ventured too close to her herd. The encounter was filmed by Melita Raphael in South Africa during a safari trip. In the video, a lone hyena can be seen lingering nearby before attempting to approach the elephants. As the threat becomes clear, the herd quickly closes ranks, surrounding their young in a protective formation. Moments later, the mother elephant charges forward, flaring her ears and swinging her trunk, forcing the hyena to retreat. Melita said: “The hyena was very hungry and the elephants were not there, so the hyena started biting a stick. “After seeing the elephants coming, the hyena just left the stick and went to try its luck to bite an elephant. “The elephants put the babies in their midst and defended.” Viewers were quick to praise the elephants’ instinctive protection of their young. One commented: “Great job protecting the babies!!” Another added: “When the herd has babies, no chance for predators.” A third joked: “Wrong neighbourhood buddy.” END
