00:00Michael Malone at his press conference yesterday down on Chapel Hill.
00:03Joe, let's take a look here.
00:04What happened?
00:07I said it for me.
00:08It's a great day to be a Tar Heel.
00:10Really thankful for this opportunity.
00:11I do not take it lightly.
00:13And people keep asking me, Coach, why would you leave a chance of coaching in the NBA again?
00:18You're an NBA coach.
00:19You won a championship in Denver in 2023.
00:23It wasn't an easy decision.
00:24But what I kept thinking about was I have a chance to be a part of something special.
00:29The history and tradition to be a part of something much bigger than myself, as I said a few minutes
00:33ago.
00:34This was the only college job I'd ever consider.
00:37You know, if any other job, I wouldn't even answer the phone.
00:40And what Steve didn't tell you, if you want to know something about Steve Newmark, persistence defined.
00:46That guy would not take no for an answer.
00:50I made a decision.
00:51I felt good about it.
00:52And Steve said, can we fly to your house on Easter Sunday?
00:55And we spent five hours together along with Eric Hoots.
00:59Had a great meeting.
01:00And my dog didn't bite him, so he knew he was okay.
01:05And that night, we talked for a while.
01:07My wife and I, we made the decision to come here.
01:09So, I do really appreciate that, Steve, for you allowing me to see what this opportunity means.
01:17And I appreciate all the players showing up over here.
01:19I don't want to just have success.
01:21Coach Belichick is here, I believe.
01:23One of the greatest coaches of all time.
01:24I appreciate you being here.
01:26You talk about sustained success, excellence, doing it year in and year out.
01:30That's what I want to bring to this table.
01:33Oh, there's a lot of lies at this press conference.
01:35This was the only job I was going to think about.
01:37When, why didn't you take $3 million because of how great it was here?
01:40And also, legacy at North Carolina.
01:41They'll never remember Michael Malone there.
01:43No, because the legacy has already been set by Dean Smith and Roy Williams and all those coaches.
01:48And then he says, like, well, why would you leave the NBA?
01:50Because nobody was hiring you in the NBA.
01:53That's why you left the NBA.
01:54We should put a translation there.
01:56You know the guy with the sign language, Joe, on the side that do all this stuff?
01:59Yeah, put me on the side.
02:00I'll actually translate what he's saying in real time.
02:05Yeah.
02:06I wouldn't answer the phone for anybody else.
02:08Unless you called me and offered me, oh, I don't know, $60 million on a six-year deal.
02:13Then I would absolutely answer the phone.
02:15You're now the second highest paid college basketball coach, $50 million, six-year deal.
02:21I can assure you he wasn't going to get that from an NBA organization, Donnie.
02:26Let's just say that.
