07:44Lorna,
08:33carter owns the store if anyone knows where the camera is it would be him
08:38his prelim is in a couple hours i think i have a way to knock down rashad's testimony but this
08:43makes it look so much worse look don't freak out yet we still have time to find something
08:49and i'm gonna come by court today for some moral support thank you izzy
08:55you hear from cisco nope just call him will you or text him something
09:06fine
09:13babe hey i love you too i've just been so worried you big idiot i know and i am really
09:22sorry i wasn't
09:23trying to lie about following gazarian out here i know you were just doing your job
09:30have you seen those two goons that beat you up no no which is kind of weird well i am
09:37not
09:37complaining babe i promise you it's safe it's not dangerous at all if anything it's kind of
09:45boring stuck in the room all day watching gazarian and janine get in and out of the pool well come
09:52home soon winston and i miss you yeah how much do you miss me i miss you so much but
10:01not as much as i
10:02miss my mini cisco i hate driving your truck i need a booster seat to see over the steering wheel
10:08babe
10:08listen i need the mini to remain inconspicuous okay that's what you said about your truck you'll have
10:14the car and me back better than ever very soon i promise good oh i have a prelim i have
10:23to get ready
10:23for it in two hours so i gotta go knock them dead huh i know you will i love you
10:29love you too babe bye
10:51so what do you think i think drucker guaranteed she laid the foundation with cohen this drucker brings
10:57it home that's what i do yeah all rise
11:08please be seated all the goodness is we've got plenty to work with if trucker decides
11:15miss berg are the people ready we are your honor the people call paul russo to the stand
11:26the ballistics expert why would you start with him and did the slug that you recovered from the
11:33defendant's garage match the slugs you recovered from the victim yes the rounds were identical and
11:39fired from the same handgun a mossberg mc2sc and is that a common handgun very common yes now mr
11:47russo one issue that's been raised is the noise that a handgun makes none of the defendant's neighbors
11:54reported hearing any gunshots that night can you explain how that might be well in my opinion the
12:00most likely explanation would be that the gun had a suppressor attached a silencer yes but contrary to
12:06popular belief it doesn't completely silence the shot it reduces the noise level to 100 110 decibels
12:14for the jury's sake can you give a comparison in terms of noise level roughly the same as the sound
12:20of a kitchen blender on high or the sound of a car motor starting but only for a fraction of
12:26a second
12:27so in your opinion would it be possible that the defendant's neighbors might not have noticed such a
12:32noise i'd say likely especially if they were asleep or watching tv i mean that is the purpose of a
12:38suppressor after all of course nothing further good afternoon mr russo i won't keep you long just a
12:50couple questions you testified that a suppressed round would have a noise level of about 100 to 110
12:56decibels correct that's right and that especially just for a second it's likely the neighbors would not
13:02have noticed this noise in my opinion yes defense exhibit b your honor
13:21mr russo this is a diagram of mr holler's home as you can see his garage is right here
13:29and his bedroom is all the way back here it's a diagonal distance of approximately 78 feet now
13:37you testified that the neighbors at a similar distance would not have noticed this noise
13:42if mr holler were asleep in this bedroom here then i assume he also would not have heard the noise
13:49correct uh well i suppose it's plausible that he may not have heard oh but you said likely
13:55not plausible i mean it's the purpose of a suppressor right it's not an exact science we'll just answer
14:04the question mr russo if someone was in mr holler's garage and killed the victim using a suppressor
14:11then according to you mr holler could have slept through the entire thing correct
14:19he could have yes thank you nothing further
14:26mr johnson can you please tell the court what you do for a living private security i currently
14:32patrol the businesses on west adams boulevard from vermont to western have you always worked in security
14:37sort of i'm a retired new york city police officer my wife and i we moved to la we have
14:43family here
14:44plus the weather i see now let's go back to december 20th of last year can you tell us what
14:53alerted you
14:53to a crime in progress sure i was in my patrol car i heard what i believed to be two
14:59gunshots one right
15:00after another so what did you do i got out of my vehicle i was on kenwood south of adams
15:04i heard a
15:05third pop i ran to the corner i didn't know where the shots were coming from but i saw the
15:11door to the
15:12liquor store ajar so i went in and there was gary laying on the floor that's gary carpright the victim
15:19yes and what was mr carpright's condition not good he was uh
15:29he was uh i'm sorry
15:36he was shot through the abdomen there was blood everywhere i tried to stop the bleeding
15:44it was bad the stock boy was shot and said that 9-1-1 was on his way so i
15:51tried my best to administer cpr but
15:53was mr carpright still conscious barely i just kept telling him to keep holding on you know that
15:58the paramedics would be there soon was he able to say anything to you
16:05mr johnson
16:08it's like i said shock okay i don't know if he knew what was going on i'll ask you again
16:13mr johnson
16:14what did mr carpright say he said
16:23carter at least that's what it sounded like to me objection hearsay it's a dying declaration except
16:29according to the medical report he wasn't declared dead until almost 40 minutes later then it's an
16:34excited utterance which is also a hearsay exception i think getting shot meets the bar for a startling
16:40event then it's irrelevant and more prejudicial than probative your honor it is not in dispute that
16:44my client had an argument with the victim shortly before the shooting but the mere fact that he uttered
16:50my client's name should have no bearing you gave it a good shot miss crane but the testimony comes in
17:03it just keeps getting worse i got duped izzy i felt sorry for carter and now i'm starting to think
17:09he did it
17:10well you still have to represent him right if we want to get paid i do
17:19hey el this is something for mickey's case i need to follow up on but keep your chin up okay
17:26hey el this is something for you i don't want to get paid i don't want to get paid i
17:26don't want to get paid
17:47trucker's here he'll be next
17:54is the witness ready yep good to go
18:03miss berg yes your honor the people call jessica westfeld to the stand
18:11remind me who jessica westfeld is she was one of our interns
18:15only for a few months lorna hired her anything to worry about
18:20i don't think i ever talked to her
18:26miss westfeld can you please explain to the jury your relationship to the defendant
18:30i was an intern at mr holler's law firm for about three months during your time there did mr holler's
18:36firm represent the victim in this case mr scales uh yes on a fraud case objection uh may we approach
18:49uh judge this line of questioning violates to turn a client privilege mr scales may be deceased but
18:55the details of his representation are still privileged and confidential privilege doesn't apply here your
19:00honor miss westfeld will not be revealing any confidential details of mr scales representation
19:06her testimony concerns a statement against interest by the defendant
19:10i don't know it but i will cut you off immediately if you stray into anything privileged miss berg
19:16absolutely your honor
19:27thank you so much for meeting with me dr schultz not at all i was intrigued when keith reached out
19:33from the
19:33la times about your master's thesis how many people care about biofuel wind and solar are the media stars
19:41of renewable energy biofuel is the weird cousin that doesn't smell so good i once drove behind a
19:51converted biodiesel fuel car it smelled like egg rolls it wasn't so bad and you're one of the lucky ones
19:58so what can i do for you i'm happy to help advance the cause of science or you know sane
20:02public policy
20:05dr schultz i have to come clean i'm not actually a grad student i don't even go to ucla what
20:14i lied to
20:15that reporter trying to get some information i actually work for a lawyer lawyer look i wouldn't
20:22blame you if you don't want to talk to me at all but i really need your help
20:31how did you come to be at the courthouse that day lorna called and asked me to come one of
20:36her heels snapped off and it turns out she kept an extra pair of shoes at the office when i
20:41arrived
20:41she was with mr holler and mr scales why was mr scales there he had just come out of a
20:47hearing
20:47that was the fraud case that i mentioned earlier he had been accused of embezzling money from a
20:53charity do you remember the outcome of that case well the judge agreed to supervise probation and all
21:01he has to do is pay all the money back which is not happening anytime soon what are you talking
21:05about
21:05look i have to pay way more to my last investor if i don't pay them i'm dead no no
21:09sam if you don't
21:10pay us you're dead he threatened sam scales yes and those were his exact words if you don't pay us
21:21you're dead yes i remember because mr holler was very angry and it scared me so you took his threat
21:29seriously yes in fact i stopped working there not long after that i'm sure you did thank you miss
21:37westfeld no more questions your honor i'll take this and don't look so mad it's not playing
21:46thank you
21:55good afternoon miss westfeld if you don't mind i would like to ask you about what you heard
22:01that phrase you're dead have you ever heard that used as a figure of speech before like maybe a big
22:09sister says it to her little sister when she's wearing her clothes touch my stuff again you're dead
22:13i mean sure i've heard it before but this just felt more i don't know real i guess right because
22:22you
22:23said mr holler was um how'd you put it angry yes at least that's how he seemed to me anyway
22:29and how
22:31would you describe your time working at mr holler's firm it was fine just fine were you treated well
22:39i got along well with lorna and the rest of the staff but not mr holler
22:46i can't say i knew him very well did he ever take an interest in you try to mentor you
22:51no uh he was
22:52always very busy sometimes he even forgot my name actually most of the time no well that must have upset
23:01you right i mean you intern at a law firm to learn from a great lawyer not to be ignored
23:07objection
23:08relevance overruled but get to the point miss mcpherson almost there your honor tell me miss westfeld what
23:14is your current job status i recently passed the bar and i'm considering my options so you're
23:21unemployed has your internship with mr holler helped in any way with the job search uh no he's on trial
23:27for murder so not the greatest reference you mentioned that you left mr holler's firm not long ago you
23:34implied that you chose to leave but tell us miss westfeld was your departure voluntary well they were
23:42they were having financial difficulties so in other words you were fired isn't that right
23:51yes so given that he terminated your employment and hasn't helped with your future job prospects
23:56isn't it true that you hold a grudge against mr holler i mean no it's not like you even misconstrued
24:02a common figure of speech because it's you who was mad at him absolutely not no i would
24:07you're testifying today in retaliation objection i'll withdraw the question good luck with the job hunt
24:20miss westfeld nothing further
24:42hope i did enough today are you kidding sure you don't want to be a defense lawyer huh
24:49i still can't believe berg didn't put trucker on first i think starting late really threw her off
24:55there's no way dana made a mistake on that that had to be calculated you think she saved trucker for
25:00a reason why are you worried she's got an october surprise it's the only thing that makes sense
25:06well if it's about the financial gain motive we can destroy that on cross it's it's weak and dana knows
25:13it that's why i'm worried any more skeletons in your closet i should know about disgruntled former
25:20employees clients you've threatened max i had a bad day in court and i took it out on sam i
25:26don't go
25:27around threatening my clients well you have to admit you fly off the handle sometimes no that's not my
25:32best quality but doesn't make me a murderer we just have to get the jury to see that that's all
25:38hmm if only people would judge you for your taste in food where do you find these places well when
25:45you work out of your car you eat all over the city this jerk chicken is unbelievable yeah you can
25:52have a bite before you eat it all you can have one and that's it just this tiny little piece
26:02good to meet you that's it thank you i've never been a foodie like you and hayley but i really
26:12do miss
26:12those places we used to go to you miss the food or my charming company
26:24i assume hayley's been sending you food pics from mexico oh my mother is spoiling her she might not
26:29want to come back she does she wants to see you get through this nightmare
26:38i don't know how i could do this without you maggie
26:43running out of ways to say thank you
27:00you should uh probably take that
27:05yeah
27:10hey even if dana has a trick up her sleeve i still think she's gonna rest her case tomorrow
27:15it's time to serve alex kazarian yeah i'll take sisco
27:50it's time to come back to me
27:59it's time to start with the chair

29:34Son of a...
29:35And how long have you been in robbery homicide, detective?
29:3914 years.
29:4014 years.
29:42That's a long time.
29:44And how many murders have you investigated in that time?
29:47Too many. Close to a hundred.
29:50And in your extensive experience,
29:52have you had a case where a murderer
29:54tried to use their vehicle to dispose of the body?
29:57Objection? Relevance?
29:59It goes to support the police focus on the defendant, Your Honor.
30:03Overruled.
30:04Detective?
30:05Yes, I have. Several times.
30:08It's not uncommon,
30:09especially when the murder is premeditated.
30:11Hmm. Why would that matter?
30:13Well, in a crime of passion,
30:15the killer hasn't thought it through.
30:16But if somebody plans to kill someone,
30:19like for money, say,
30:21well, they usually try to figure out a way to cover their tracks.
30:24Huh.
30:24Let's talk about that then.
30:27You mentioned money as a motive.
30:30Did there come a time when you began to suspect
30:32that money might have been the motive behind this murder?
30:34Yes. That was one theory that we explored.
30:37We had witness statements to the effect
30:38that there was tension with the defendant over unpaid bills.
30:42And did you investigate this?
30:44Yes. To begin with, we conducted searches
30:46at Mr. Haller's home and office,
30:48and then also of his remote storage facility
30:52where he keeps old files.
30:54And what did you find there?
30:55As we expected,
30:56we found bills indicating $200,000
30:59in overdue legal fees from the victim,
31:02along with copies of bounced checks
31:04indicating that the victim had attempted to avoid payment.
31:08We also found a letter threatening action
31:10if those bills were not paid promptly.
31:12People's Five, Your Honor.
31:15Detective, can you read the highlighted portion there?
31:19Sure.
31:21From my prior representation of you,
31:23I know that you keep a legal fund
31:25to pay your attorney's fees,
31:27and I expect to be paid out of that fund immediately.
31:31Otherwise, I will have no choice
31:32but to take serious further action
31:34using any means at my disposal.
31:37This is your final warning.
31:40There's no signature,
31:41but the defendant's name is at the bottom.
31:44And what did you take from this?
31:47Well, that Mr. Haller believed that Mr. Scales
31:49had a stash of money set aside, and he wanted it.
31:52We also searched the court records
31:54and found that Mr. Haller had filed
31:56for both civil judgments
31:59and an attorney's lien against Mr. Scales.
32:02So he also tried to file a judgment
32:04forcing Mr. Scales to pay?
32:06More than that.
32:07The lien applied as well to Mr. Scales' estate.
32:11His estate?
32:12Yes.
32:13Meaning that if Mr. Scales were to die,
32:16then whatever money that he wouldn't pay before,
32:20the defendant could collect once he was dead.
32:42Not the best time, babe.
32:44Please tell me you served his area.
32:46I kind of hit a little snag,
32:49but there's nothing I can't fix.
32:50Cisco, the whole point of you being there
32:52is to keep tabs on them.
32:53Well, they must have caught my scent
32:55because they ditched the Mercedes
32:56and took off in a rental.
32:58To go where?
33:00Uh, I think they're trying to go to Mexico.
33:03What?
33:03Cisco, he cannot cross the border.
33:05It's not gonna happen, I promise.
33:07I'll run them off the road before they do.
33:09Okay.
33:10I have to go to my hearing,
33:11but Iceberg is making this financial game bullshit
33:13look better and better.
33:14We need this guy, Cisco.
33:15Okay, I gotta go, baby.
33:21Thank you, Detective.
33:22Nothing further, Your Honor.
33:24Project examination?
33:26No, no.
33:27I could nail him in the search of my files.
33:29I was there.
33:29I might stick to the facts.
33:31Don't let him drag you into anything.
33:33Thank you, Your Honor.
33:34Detective, this letter from my office
33:37to Mr. Scales demanding payment,
33:39you said I never sign it, correct?
33:41That's right.
33:42Apparently it was drawn up by your office manager.
33:44And did she also draw up the court filings
33:46you referred to for judgments and liens?
33:49I'm not really sure.
33:50But you have no evidence that I knew any of this, do you?
33:53Other than the fact that we found the letter in your files, no.
33:55And you have no evidence that the letter
33:57was ever sent to Mr. Scales.
33:59Isn't that correct?
34:00Yes, that is correct.
34:02It was just a standard letter asking for payment, right?
34:04Objection.
34:05Beyond the scope of the witness's knowledge.
34:07The letter speaks for itself, Mr. Holler.
34:09Sustained.
34:10Okay, let's talk about how you found this letter.
34:13How did you access my storage facility?
34:15As I said, we had a search warrant.
34:17Yes, but how did you physically get there?
34:21Sir, I don't understand.
34:22Isn't it true that I led you there?
34:24I volunteered to escort you
34:26even though I had no obligation to help you.
34:29Isn't that right?
34:29We followed you there, yes.
34:31Oh, it was more than that, Detective.
34:33Don't you remember?
34:34I even pulled over in my car and waited for you
34:36when you got stuck at a light so you wouldn't get lost?
34:39You accompanied us on the search of your storage facility, yes.
34:44And how did you access my facility?
34:45Because it was locked, right?
34:47Your associate met us there with the keys and unlocked it.
34:49And then she led you to the file cabinets
34:51and unlocked those as well, didn't she?
34:54Yes.
34:55Sounds like my staff and I were pretty cooperative
34:58with your search, wouldn't you agree?
35:00You didn't obstruct us.
35:02Because we had nothing to hide.
35:04Objection.
35:05Counsel is testifying.
35:06My apologies, Your Honor.
35:08First time being forced to represent myself.
35:10We've drawn this statement.
35:11Now tell me something, Detective.
35:13In your extensive experience,
35:16is it unusual for an attorney to file a judgment
35:19or obtain a lien to collect unpaid legal fees?
35:21I wouldn't know.
35:22No?
35:23Just like any other business owner might do,
35:25like a mechanics lien.
35:27You didn't research that?
35:29I did not.
35:31Would you think it was unusual?
35:32Objection.
35:33Calls for speculation.
35:34Sorry again, Your Honor.
35:35I'm just trying to understand this supposed motive.
35:38Now, when you were searching my files, Detective,
35:40did you even bother to look for my tax returns
35:43so you could see whether or not
35:44I wrote off the unpaid bills as a loss?
35:46No, I didn't take any tax returns.
35:48You didn't?
35:49So you mean to tell us
35:50you spent hours searching my home,
35:53my office, my facilities,
35:55you went through court records
35:56and anything else you can think of,
35:58and in the end all you found was a letter
36:00I didn't even sign and a judgment
36:03and any business owner would get?
36:05No.
36:08That's not all we found, actually.
36:14Well, that's all you presented, Detective.
36:17Nothing further, Your Honor,
36:18but we reserve the right to recall this witness
36:20at a later time.
36:21Redirect, Your Honor?
36:26So, Detective, you just mentioned
36:30that you found something more in your search.
36:33Can you talk about that?
36:34Yes.
36:35We didn't confine our search just to paper files.
36:38On the defendant's email server,
36:39we found an email from a fraudulent charity
36:42set up by Mr. Scales.
36:44An email?
36:45Yes.
36:46It seems that Mr. Scales set up
36:48a phony fundraising drive
36:50to help migrants from Latin America.
36:52It was the kind of scan
36:54that was right in his wheelhouse, but...
36:55Objection, Your Honor.
36:57We have received no copy of any such email.
37:00That's because the analysis
37:01of the defendant's computer was just completed.
37:04That's why we didn't present the evidence
37:06in our direct examination,
37:07but the defendant's question clearly opened the door,
37:10and I have a copy of the email here
37:14for defense counsel.
37:17I'll allow it.
37:20But I'm going to construe this narrowly, Ms. Berg.
37:23Understood, Your Honor.
37:24I've never seen this before in my life.
37:26So, Detective, this email you found,
37:30why did it seem important?
37:33Well, the email was sent to a mailing list
37:35of a legitimate charity called Fuertes Unidos.
37:39They help provide legal aid for migrant workers.
37:41In fact, Mr. Holler had donated his time
37:44to the organization in the past.
37:45And Mr. Scales was using the name of this organization
37:49to try and scam people into sending him money?
37:52Even worse.
37:53He was using the defendant's name and likeness as well.
37:57You mean, he made it seem like Mr. Holler
38:01was endorsing this phony fundraising appeal?
38:04That's right.
38:05Obviously, this could cause harm to the defendant's reputation,
38:08or even potential liability.
38:11It seemed clear to me that if the defendant were aware of this,
38:14he would be furious about it, and then...
38:16Objection.
38:17Speculation.
38:18Sustained.
38:19The witness will only testify to facts in evidence.
38:22Is that understood?
38:23Yes, Your Honor.
38:25Allow me to rephrase.
38:27Detective, did you find any evidence
38:30that the defendant was aware of this email?
38:32Well, as I said, we found the email itself
38:35on the defendant's server.
38:37He was a part of the mailing list.
38:39It was in his junk folder,
38:41but we had no way to know if it was sent there directly,
38:44or if he had read it and then moved it there himself.
38:48Now, Detective, you testified as to a possible financial motive
38:52for this murder.
38:54Does this email support that motive?
38:56It's impossible to say, but in my experience,
39:01murders can have multiple motives.
39:04Imagine a man hates his wife,
39:07and he stands to collect life insurance if she dies.
39:10People often kill for more than one reason.
39:48You saw the shooter?
39:50Yes, just for a second before I ran back to the stock room.
39:52What happened then?
39:53I heard a gunshot.
39:55I think he was taking out the security camera.
39:57Then I heard him yell, give me all the fucking money.
39:58And then I think Gary shot back.
40:00And then it sounded like a gun jammed.
40:03And then there was one more shot.
40:05That was it.
40:06Did the shooter flee after that?
40:08Yeah.
40:08I ran out.
40:09I saw Gary lying there.
40:12There was so much blood.
40:14I called 911 right away.
40:15Just to be clear, Mr. Harrison,
40:17you were sure that the man with the gun that day
40:20was Carter Gates?
40:25It was him.
40:27Yes.
40:29Thank you.
40:31No further questions.
40:32Miss Crane?
40:34Thank you, Your Honor.
40:38Okay.
40:39Let me just make sure I have this straight, Mr. Harrison.
40:43Carter and Gary had a huge fight, correct?
40:46Yes.
40:47And then Carter took off, and a few minutes later,
40:49he came back into his own store with a mask on and a gun
40:54and demanded his own money.
40:58Doesn't that seem a little weird?
41:00I guess he wanted it to look like a robbery, you know?
41:03That's why he shot off the security camera.
41:04And you are sure that it was Carter?
41:07Yeah, I'm pretty sure.
41:09Pretty sure?
41:10I'm sure.
41:11I know what I saw.
41:12Even though he had a black stocking over his head,
41:15and you admitted that you only saw him for a second.
41:17I know what I heard, too.
41:19It was his voice.
41:21Mr. Harrison, do you know what confirmation bias is?
41:27Uh, no.
41:29It means that sometimes what you expected to happen
41:32affects your impression of what actually happened.
41:34In this case, maybe what you think you heard
41:37is really just what you expected to hear.
41:40Objection. Beyond the scope.
41:41I'm just asking the witness for his own impressions, Your Honor.
41:46Overruled.
41:47The witness may answer.
41:49Tread carefully, Ms. Crane.
41:53I-I don't follow you.
41:54Gary and Carter had a huge fight.
41:56You were worried it might get violent,
41:58so when someone came back in with a gun,
42:01you just assumed it was Carter.
42:02No, no. That's not what I saw.
42:04No? You never saw the gunman's face.
42:06Do you even know if he was wearing the same clothes as Carter?
42:08Well, I don't know what Carter was wearing, but I-
42:10Exactly, because you were in the stalk room when they were fighting.
42:14But it was his voice.
42:16Were you aware that Carter had a criminal record?
42:18I mean, he mentioned it once.
42:21It wasn't like he was trying to hide it.
42:22Did that scare you?
42:23I don't know. I just figured he came from a rough background, I guess.
42:26The kind where maybe you thought he was capable of violence?
42:30I mean...
42:31You knew he had a record.
42:33You knew he was really mad.
42:35And you were afraid of violence.
42:36Isn't it possible that you put all that together in your head
42:39and your brain just told you,
42:41Oh my God, it's Carter with a gun?
42:42I-I don't know.
42:43You don't know?
42:43I-I don't-I don't know.
42:45I mean, yeah, sure-sure.
42:46I mean, anything's possible, right?
42:48Right.
42:49Thank you, Mr. Harrison.
43:19Somebody's going to get my son right now.
43:22For me, I want to take a bullet for that the gun.
43:26There's a gun.
43:26It's a gun.
43:26And you can still get through this and you can't stay out of the gun.
43:27I don't know.
43:27But you don't know what's going on.
43:28I'm going on.
43:29We're not sure.
43:34I'm takin' on top of these.

44:56No need to get violent
45:00You scared the shit out of me
45:02Oh
45:04Who the hell
45:06Wait, I know you
45:07We have men, yes
45:10This is for you
45:11You've been served
45:15Couldn't run from me forever
45:18You think I care about a fucking subpoena?
45:25Give me a heart
45:52Thanks again
45:55Hey, I was just about to call you
45:57I think we may have caught a break
45:58What kind of break?
45:59In Mickey's case
46:00Remember that scientist I was trying to track down?
46:02The EPA specialist from the LA Times article
46:05I talked to him yesterday
46:07He just called back
46:08And said he'd be willing to testify about the Biocreen scam
46:11That is good news
46:13What's wrong?
46:15Were you able to knock out the Rashad testimony?
46:17I think so
46:18But it's not going to be enough
46:19You saw what happened
46:21The security guard said the victim named my client right before he died
46:25Sorry, Elle
46:29Carter's pretty unlucky
46:30The dead guy lives just long enough to ID him
46:33What are the chances?
46:42Exactly
46:45What are the chances?
46:47Uh
46:49I think we may have just caught a break
46:52Uh-huh
46:53That's what I said
46:56Hey
46:58It's Lorna
46:59Yes, it's so good to hear your voice, too
47:01Listen, I was wondering if you could just look through something for me
47:06I promise it'll be quick
47:15Well, at least we know what the October surprise was
47:17What a load of bullshit
47:19And the jury bought it, too
47:20Is that your fault?
47:21No, it is my fault, Maggie
47:23She laid a trap and I stepped right into it
47:26Exactly what you told me not to do
47:28Well, there's nothing we can do about it now
47:29You did a great job knocking down the financial gain motive
47:34Never even knew you could deduct unpaid legal fees on your taxes
47:37Well, that's because you can't
47:39What?
47:40Well, you work for the government, so you wouldn't know
47:42But if a client doesn't pay you
47:45You just have to eat the loss
47:47I never said you could
47:48I just asked if
47:49If you checked my returns
47:50You bluffed
47:52Right?
47:53Welcome to defense work
47:59Some good news, at least
48:05Okay
48:31Okay, great
48:32So just let me know what you find
48:35Bye
48:39You think it'll work?
48:41It's worth a shot, right?
48:43Yep
48:46Hey, hon, you get it done?
48:48Yeah, but I don't know
48:50What?
48:52Something doesn't add up
48:54I've been chasing this guy everywhere
48:56When I finally serve him
48:59Barely raises an eyebrow
49:00So?
49:01Maybe he's just mellowed out
49:02Since the last time you served him
49:03Nah, he's not worried about us
49:06Feels like there's something else
49:08How'd you get past the two bodyguards?
49:10That's the thing
49:11I haven't seen those two goons this whole time
49:14Until just now
49:15They can't
49:18Holy shit
49:19He wasn't worried about us
49:21He was worried about them
49:36Sister, what happened?
49:39We got a problem
49:41We got a problem
