00:00Saving goals isn't just crucial in my career, it's vital in my everyday life.
00:04It's how I've got on to become an Olympic gold medalist.
00:06Hi, I'm Manny Hinch. I'm an international hockey goalkeeper.
00:09I've been playing full-time hockey for over 15 years.
00:12My career has been a bit of a fairy tale, to say the least.
00:16I've been part of a bit of a golden era in our sport
00:19and I've been very fortunate to play in many major finals,
00:23win gold medals, travel the world,
00:27and get to call hockey my job,
00:29which is something that, as a kid, I could have only dreamed of.
00:36Saving is important for everyone, including myself as an athlete,
00:39because ultimately my career has a ceiling, my future is uncertain,
00:44so it's very important that I always think long-term
00:47and what my life might look like after hockey.
00:50I think for me, the importance of saving probably came later than I would have liked.
00:54I think as I've become more aware of life as such, as I've got older,
01:00I think the importance of it becomes more real.
01:02I've learned that saving is very hard and it's something that you have to be very disciplined with
01:06and I think it's that allocation of where you put the money that's really important.
01:10I think it's quite easy to save for, say, a goal that you have, a holiday or buying a new
01:16car or whatever,
01:17but actually putting aside something that maybe doesn't feel real in the moment, like a retirement,
01:22is hard to do and to discipline yourself to do that and not necessarily touch that little pot, I think
01:27it's tricky.
01:35A physical goal that I've saved, thankfully I've saved quite a few, so that's certainly helpful.
01:40I've also let a lot in, but I try and explain this to some of the kids that I coach
01:45and I'm trying to inspire every day to go on and do what I've done for a living
01:48because for me there is no better position in the world, I don't think,
01:52that can replicate the feeling of a momentum, game-changing save
01:57and that's the power in our role.
01:59Whatever action we have, we can change the momentum of a game in either direction.
02:02It's kind of life on the edge, so when you make a save that really kind of captures the crowd,
02:06captures the team's attention and gets the team to come with you,
02:09for me that's got to be better than scoring six goals a game.
02:12So definitely the best position on the pitch and the best feeling in the world.
02:16Saving on the pitch is definitely just as important as saving off the pitch.
02:19I think they go hand in hand.
02:21Yes, I stop hockey balls and I'm trying to save hockey balls, but that's my job in the moment
02:24and ultimately when I'm off the hockey pitch, I'm also trying to save to do other things in my life.
02:28So that's my job in that moment.
02:29So really they work together.
