00:12of course getting champagne tastes for your beer budget but is that possible when even the average

00:45industry at some of the biggest companies in the business I've spent more than 20 years working for
00:51different airlines such as British Airways and KLM I work for companies including Thomas Cook
00:56Tui and EasyJair Holidays and the country's leading brands knock knock will take me behind closed doors
01:03this is where the magic happens from hotels and holiday operators to airlines travel agencies
01:11and even cruise lines they're sharing their travel industry tricks to holidaying better for less

01:48hacks from how to upgrade your meal without upgrading your ticket how is that possible to flying long
01:55distance for low cost three hours long that's the sweet spot for making money so sit back and relax
02:03while I show you how to have a long haul holiday on a short haul budget
02:08the UK has seen a surge in long haul trips abroad research suggests a third of us are planning a far-flung
02:22trip what can I say it was absolutely amazing we've been swimming every day with countries like
02:30Thailand and Vietnam proving to be more cost effective than some European destinations you
02:37can see why oh wow people love to go on long haul holidays you know it gives them the ability to be
02:44able to travel for a bit longer experience different destinations and also the further away we get from
02:49home culturally we're in a completely new world sandy beaches five-star hotels and beautiful scenery
02:58long haul holidays really are the ultimate getaway and with the average price of a long haul holiday
03:06trip costing around 1,300 pounds per person they're also the ultimate investment so how can we save money
03:16when traveling further afield for faraway holidays there's one thing that can really set the price soaring
03:25flights my name is John Grant my career began working for some of Europe's major airlines British
03:33Airways British Caledonian and KLM Royal Dutch Airlines when it comes to flights John's got the fair facts
03:39ultimately as a passenger we pay for a ticket the airline only receives an element of that fair and in the
03:48United Kingdom we have to pay airport departure tax and that is a very significant proportion of the
03:56airfare on some routes the UK has one of the highest rates of air passenger duty in the world it ranges from
04:0614 pounds for domestic to 224 pounds for the longest flights that's 224 pounds on top of your fair
04:16it's a significant source of revenue for the government last year the Treasury collected over
04:234 billion pounds and the tax is set to be increased by about 14 percent in April but you could find a way
04:32around it one of the ways to avoid airport departure tax is to start your long-haul journey from an airport
04:41outside of the United Kingdom that can save you up to 250 pounds per passenger and that for a family of
04:49four suddenly becomes a thousand pounds one person who knows all about this hack is holiday expert Chelsea
04:56Dickinson she's a sun-seeking money-saving guru who's helped thousands of followers save money on their
05:03holidays and she's no stranger to long-haul either hello from Napa Tokyo I'm here to find out how we
05:12can all get cheap long-distance flights hi Chelsea hi Jasmine good thanks I thought we'd get a little bit
05:22geeky today okay geeky yeah and talk about something very sexy taxes and fees everyone's favorite topic
05:33yeah because it does really impact the overall price of your flight whilst we all want to get that direct
05:40flight from the UK unfortunately that can sometimes be the most expensive way to travel but it's also the
05:48convenience factor isn't it I know I hear what you're saying however I think it's really important
05:53to understand what makes up that price that we see on the screen because it does mean further down the
05:59line you're going to be able to find some ways to hack your way around it to save yourself a bit of cash
06:04I've got an example for you that hopefully will show how taxes and fees can really change the price and
06:13even save some money now my ears have pricked up so found a flight from London all the way down to Cape Town
06:23so this flight would cost you 766 pounds the airfare for this flight is 477 pounds the remaining 289 pounds
06:38is taxes and fees that's almost 40 of the ticket price so next we are looking at flying from Dublin
06:47the total flight price from Dublin is a lot lower it's 572 pounds that's quite a saving don't you think
06:59which is great if you live in Dublin and you can fly from Dublin but obviously if you live somewhere else
07:05you've got to factor in the cost of getting from wherever you are to Dublin yeah 100% so factoring
07:11in the price of a flight to get us to Dublin the total price would actually be 630 pounds so that's
07:19still quite a significant saving if you fly from Dublin the taxes and fees are only 18 percent of the
07:26ticket price so even with the extra flight you're still saving 136 pounds for a family of four that's
07:36over 500 pounds saved if you're lucky enough to live in the Scottish Highlands or Northern Ireland there's
07:46an added bonus you don't pay air passenger duty on long-haul flights at all that means if you fly from
07:56Inverness to London Heathrow to Melbourne you would pay 213 pounds less than if you boarded the same
08:03Heathrow to Melbourne flight in London even though you're also paying for the Inverness to Heathrow leg
08:10but sadly you can't beat the system by booking Inverness to Melbourne and only getting on at Heathrow
08:17if you miss that flight it cancels the booking frequent flyer Lloyd knows how not to get caught out
08:24you have to still go to the destination don't just think you can book that flight and get on
08:28the second flight in London if you want really stellar savings and you're in the mood to treat yourself
08:35why not take a look at business class I've got this flight here it's from London to all the way over
08:43here to Bangkok I'm not sure if I am ready for this price business class from London to Bangkok
08:523,022 pounds that's a bit spendy no one's saying yes to that are they no so we're gonna fly from
09:03Rome Rome's a good one to be checking for those uh cheaper business class rates business class from
09:13Rome to Bangkok is 1,173 pounds and with a flight to Rome on top of it as well you're looking at more
09:23around the 1,295 pounds that's a massive difference is such a huge difference the airfare taxes and fees
09:32are all cheaper from Rome and even with the flight there you're still saving a whopping 1,700 pounds
09:40one thing that is worth bearing in mind if you ever have to cancel your flights and you don't have any
09:46refundable rights you can still claim some of those taxes and fees back so in most cases most airlines
09:54will allow you to get your air passenger duty back and sometimes a few of the airport surcharges as well
10:00so say if you cancel this flight you might get around a hundred pounds back they don't tell you
10:05that do you know really sneaky who said tax was boring you also have to consider whether there's
10:16an environmental impact to breaking up your journey like yeah we need to think about the total carbon
10:23emissions of our journey and there's some really handy carbon emissions calculators out there on
10:30the internet that you can use there's one on the UN website and there are also ways that you can offset
10:36your carbon emissions as well websites like carbon footprint.com and myclimate.org will help you
10:43calculate your flights carbon emissions and if you want to offset emissions the easiest way to do it would
10:49be to opt in when you book your flight so if you're flying far away with family or splashing out on
10:57business class there are big savings to be made just make sure the first leg of your journey takes you
11:05somewhere with low air passenger duty and an airport with lower fees try ireland spain portugal all have
11:14lower taxes and charges coming up how to hack your way to a better in-flight meal that's unbelievable
11:27and the far-flung destinations that are closer to home than you think i can fully see exactly why
11:33everyone says it's a duke from hawaii
11:42i'm on a mission to get you the best tips to achieve as chips long-haul holiday
11:48we've discovered a hack to slash the cost of your ticket that's a massive saving
11:56now what about upgrading your in-flight meal
11:59if you're going on a long flight chances are you've prepped everything you can to make it
12:07comfortable you've packed your pillow worn your comfiest clothes and downloaded your favorite
12:12shows but there's still one part of the journey that's up in the air and that's the food
12:18so this is our meal on our flight to abidabi
12:28the food was just not that we were stuck on this flight for 13 hours it looks absolutely grim
12:36from streaming films to sending emails there's a lot we can now do at 35 000 feet and yet there's one
12:44thing that still feels impossible and that's getting a good hot meal
12:50i'm john strickland i've been in the airline industry over 40 years
12:54john's worked with numerous airlines ba klm buzz airline food really is is a point you could debate
13:03all day it's a differentiator for airlines mainly on long-haul flights and in their premium cabins by
13:08which i mean business class and premium economy their airlines want to present
13:12a really good offer of food and drink many years ago i had a almost a unique opportunity to rebrand an
13:20airline we did a huge amount of research around the meal tray what's on the meal tray what people touch
13:27on the meal tray where's the best place to put the hot on tray on the meal tray is it in front of them
13:33is it at the back of a tray um is it to the left it was yeah i mean there's a lot of psychological
13:40research that goes into travel and you know the best products that you can create
13:47and it's not just psychology the airlines scrutinize it's also the science of flavor
13:54to understand the lengths the industry goes to to tantalize our taste buds i'm going behind the scenes
14:00at one of the uk's largest in-flight catering facilities if you've flown long haul out of
14:08london there's a good chance you've eaten a meal that was made here
14:22wow
14:25oh look the little trays i'm with executive chef julian dogmore to find out the secret
14:31ingredients to delivering a dish at 35 000 feet wow this is where the magic happens look at this
14:43so when you're flying at altitude you tend to not taste saltiness as much as you would do at ground
14:50level and you don't taste sweetness it has less effect on your palate oh that's so interesting so
14:56your taste buds aren't as switched on as they would normally be yes and and the way we compensate is
15:02using very tasty ingredients umami flavors it's often overlooked but umami is our fifth basic taste
15:12it's a strong savory taste and it's the one flavor that keeps its punch even when we're flying high
15:19which is why chefs like julian work hard to design meals full of high umami foods so we have chicken
15:29mousseline which is like a chicken mousse that we formed in this malt but it has got truffles and
15:35tarragon in there the chicken stock has also got mushrooms in it and then we've also done some roasted
15:41oyster mushrooms as well when it comes to umami more is more and julian has plenty of creative ways to
15:49pack it into everything we eat on the plane so soy sauce miso we will also do things like seaweed as
15:58an example certain cheeses maybe like parmesan that just bring in their depth of flavor to the meal
16:05flavor isn't the only thing that's compromised cooking for altitude has a lot more complications
16:11than on the ground we've got a height restriction within the trays that fit into the flight carts and
16:18it has to be below that otherwise your product does not put into the aircraft flight card these
16:24little trays might be packed to precision on the ground but the real challenge comes in the sky
16:33so here we have a premium economy dish it is essentially fish and chips okay is that quite a tricky
16:41one to do on board the aircraft the way we get around trying to keep things crispy on board instead of
16:47using deep fried chips we will do roast potato wedges with regards to the deep fried fish itself how
16:53we try to manage in keeping it crispy is to make sure that we reheat the food within a set time frame so
16:59that we do not allow the build up of steam which ultimately will make the fish soggy a bit soggy
17:06no one wants a soggy coating from tricky trays to soggy suppers plain food really is fighting against the odds
17:17but with limited options in the sky i want to find out if there are any hacks to make airplane food better
17:24this is barry smith he's a sensory scientist and he's got airplane dining down to a fine art
17:41so barry why does airplane food have such a bad press well it's really the fault of the environment the
17:49sound of cabin noise white noise in your ears that has a suppressive effect on some of the things we
17:56can taste really yeah let's simulate the sounds of an aircraft noise is it really that loud it's really
18:05that loud it's about 89 to 95 decibels to help me understand how the noise of the cabin impacts my
18:13enjoyment of the food i'm going to try eating with some noise cancelling headphones on
18:23can you hear me
18:32how is that possible it's like the best cashew nut i've ever had in my life great that's unbelievable
18:43so that shows you just how much noise is interfering with our perception of the flavors that we're
18:49eating and as soon as we block that out and get you to concentrate on what's going on in the mouth
18:55you can even hear your own crunching but the intensity of the flavor comes out so noise cancelling
19:01means flavor enhancing but what if you don't have headphones well umami packed foods are immune to the
19:09cabin noise if you think of the things we could have on an aircraft that are not going to be affected
19:18by that loud noise in your ears they're going to be cherry tomatoes they're going to be parmesan
19:25they're even going to be things like tomato juice and champagne
19:31my two favorite drinks to have on board a plane no it's not you need to have something with lots
19:40of umami and the thing you can have on a plane that has lots of umami is tomato juice so that is going
19:48to have so much more flavor than any of the other drinks you can be given on board the good news is
19:54if we want to have a drink and make sure all that aroma reaches us then we should have champagne
20:02now we're talking yes so this is a very good drink to have when on an aircraft
20:08precisely because those bubbles that are coming out of the glass yeah they are delivering little packages
20:16of popping aroma some of them will get into the nose but in the mouth they'll be all around the mouth
20:22getting to the back of the throat and up to the nose very quickly so that's a reason for having a fizzy
20:28drink and the other reason for having champagne is champagne when it's made on the the lees the the
20:36the yeasts when the yeasts die they give off glutamic acid and glutamic acid is an amino acid that's
20:44huge amounts of umami in it okay and the good news is when you combine the umami in champagne
20:55with some of the umami rich ingredients in your food they'll boost each other right so everything
21:01will taste a little bit better cheers cheers i feel like you should have one as well i feel like that
21:07if champagne's not on the menu there's another simple hack guaranteed to boost flavor
21:18one of the other things that you can do would be to add some soy sauce
21:23so if you have some little sachets of soy sauce that you could just sprinkle spread over the food
21:28again more umami packed flavor so having a little sachet of soy sauce would be more effective than having
21:36like little salt and pepper or something like absolutely if you really want to embrace the
21:41senses you don't want to forget your nose because smells make up about 80 percent of what we perceive
21:48as taste there is another technique that we can use and it's it's a bit messier you're not smelling
21:56things because of the the low pressure but also the dryness of the air and you have to have the mucous
22:03membrane wet if you're going to smell things okay so you could always take um a nasal spray
22:10a saline nasal spray does this work taste more it does work it does work
22:18okay
22:23my airway feels so much more open yes that i can actually yes smell and taste everything much
22:29better time to put barry's tips to the test and see if i really can make the airplane food taste any better
22:41this is where it starts to get embarrassing
22:47soy sauce
22:48so there you have it the cheap secret ingredients to a better in-flight meal earplugs soy sauce and a nasal spray
23:10don't forget to wash it all down with an umami packed drink like my tomato juice kombucha is another
23:19great option if you can't stretch to champagne
23:24coming up the secret to cheap flights because it's a great way to to get a taste of another country
23:38book a long-haul holiday and you're investing serious money flying thousands of miles and counting
23:47down for months so getting it right matters
23:52you've done all the research price check the deals requested your annual leave you're finally ready to book
23:58that holiday you've been saving for now all you need is the perfect hotel a nice big room great
24:07food a gorgeous pool and the kind of reviews that give you the confidence to click book
24:16my name's sarah martin i've spent probably 25 years plus working within the travel industry along retail
24:24travel agents with a wide range of experience sarah knows what matters to us when it comes to booking
24:31a holiday people don't like to park with their money and when they're spending an awful lot of money on
24:37a holiday i think having that option to be able to read people's reviews that are honest of where they've
24:43been and their experience it gives people that expectation of what they're walking into a review can
24:49really influence consumer behavior joe rhodes is a travel investigator for consumer champions which
24:57she's been holding companies to account for over eight years for say a hotel room you're much more
25:03likely to book if you read about other holiday makers really positive experiences in that hotel
25:10with almost half of us reading reviews before booking a holiday
25:14good reviews 8.7 it's safe to say they are important but there's a problem
25:24there are entire businesses companies that are based on submitting fake reviews to various review
25:32hosting platforms and we call these paid review farms i'm becky foley i am the vice president of trust and
25:39safety at trip advisor i've been a trip advisor for over 10 years becky leads the team dedicated to
25:47user-generated content and fraud prevention what these businesses do is they will contact hotel restaurant
25:54or tour operators and they will ask them hey if i am able to get 10 positive reviews submitted to your
26:03business listing will you give me a hundred dollars and hotel owners or restaurant owners sometimes will
26:10engage in that because they are very incentivized to go up in the rating and ranking on trip advisor
26:19and it's bad news for those of us planning a far-flung getaway last year trip advisor found the worst
26:26locations for paid reviews were all long haul indonesia vietnam and the us and we got stung in our hotel
26:35in denang so i had booked this read the reviews and i was like oh they all seem good booked it got there
26:44was in shock there's no way everyone is writing this hotel amazing because it's so bad and then on
26:50closer inspection i realized all the reviews were indeed fake so just how many fake reviews are out
26:58there last year trip advisor removed over 2.7 million fake reviews from our site just under 80 of them were
27:06removed before they were ever posted the other 20 were removed after we identified a pattern and we
27:14were able to go back and make sure that we got all of the fake reviews down that's only on trip advisor
27:21there's also yelp facebook google and so on in fact 80 of online reviews are on google and the fake ones
27:29are getting harder to spot ai's making it more difficult in terms of fake reviews for one they're able to
27:38generate them at such volume and so much quicker than a human could but also the language is becoming
27:45more sophisticated so it's going to be much more difficult for the consumer to actually differentiate
27:51between a genuine and a fake review and a human and a robot voice lovely stay clean and cozy
28:00right in the heart of the city staff were helpful with tips on where to eat and what to see
28:06ideal base for exploring the city on foot would happily return sounds convincing doesn't it but
28:13this is an ai generated review i'd be fooled it's clear fake reviews are a problem so what's being
28:21done about them since april last year fake reviews have been illegal in the uk so my name's sarah gillespie
28:29i'm a freelance travel journalist for major uk publications and i've been writing about consumer
28:35travel for about five years sarah's got the lowdown on the law any company that is found to be
28:43hosting fake reviews on its site can face a fine of up to 10 of its global turnover which is a huge amount
28:50so companies now have a huge incentive to to get rid of fake reviews that level of fine should be a significant deterrent
28:59so why are there still so many fake reviews ai is it's becoming more sophisticated so it's more
29:07difficult to distinguish it from say human voice the sheer volume of reviews that it will be able to
29:15generate it's going to be very difficult for any verification system to keep up with it so how can we at
29:23home beat the bots one thing you can do is when you are scrolling through them is clicking on sometimes
29:30you have a profile aligned with you as a reviewer and when you click through and there's no other
29:35reviews there there's no photo it does lead you to think is this person legit if you can see maybe
29:41they've left 20 reviews in an hour that's typically not going to be a legitimate review to spot a fake
29:47review you want to actually read the review first have a look at what's being said because a fake
29:54review will quite often be quite generic real reviews left by real people will quite often include
29:59information that is completely useless they'll say stuff like oh we went for my wife's anniversary or
30:06for a 60th birthday none of that has any relevance to the review if you think you've found the perfect
30:13place check social media travelers will often show you their hotel room or food just make sure they're
30:19not sponsored posts or ads even for deal conscious travelers flights remain one of the biggest costs of
30:30a long-haul holiday a cost many of us have come to accept but change could be on the horizon
30:37from no thrill service to endless add-ons it's fair to say that low-cost airlines have completely
30:49changed the way we see travel but there's one low-cost concept that's never really taken off and that is
30:56long distance the whole evolution of the low-cost airline sector has been can we find markets that are
31:05about three hours long that's the sweet spot for making money full airplane turn it round another
31:12full airplane lots of revenue
31:17for anything longer than three hours you'd usually have to depend on a legacy airline
31:22one that offers a full service like british airways or emirates but advancements in airplane
31:28technology mean that traditional low-cost airplanes can now fly for longer
31:33last five to seven years has seen the introduction of these next generation aircraft so essentially
31:41it's the same aircraft it looks the same it has new engines that have more thrust and therefore allow
31:48the airline to operate that to longer sectors in the past you needed to fly on a big jet like a 787 or an
31:58a 330 to get you to places like africa or asia but now a smaller more fuel efficient plane can get you there
32:07and that is just a game changer because a smaller plane is cheaper to run and that means low-cost airlines
32:14can get into the market is conceivable for a narrow-bodied low-cost airline to operate from the united kingdom or
32:25ireland all the way to the east coast of the united states offering low-cost services
32:32never once to follow the trends low-cost airlines aren't just replicating typical routes they're identifying new ones
32:40we recently launched london gatwick to medina in saudi arabia and that's the first time there's been any
32:47connectivity between the uk and medina low-cost airlines are opening up new routes and new possibilities
32:55with budget flights already available from the uk to places like cape verde and egypt
33:02and in europe low-cost airlines can get you as far as the gambia
33:07but what if you want to go further you could get two low-cost flights and have a stopover holiday for free
33:18i've been doing some research and if i wanted to fly from london to dubai it would cost me about 925
33:26pounds but if i chose to connect two budget flights and flew from london to istanbul with pegasus
33:34and then from istanbul to dubai with fly dubai it would only cost me 690 pounds that's more than 200
33:44pounds cheaper which is money you could spend on your holiday
33:54if you really wanted to capitalize on those savings there are some destinations that will relax the rules
34:00for short stays one way that you can maximize a long-haul journey is to take advantage of some
34:06schemes offered by certain countries where you can stop over in a country without having to pay for a
34:12visa which can sometimes be quite expensive sarah's got the inside scoop on super stopovers a really savvy
34:21way to max out your adventure china has started offering stays of up to 10 days visa free for uk
34:29travelers in up to 60 destinations which includes beijing and shanghai so if you're flying to a
34:37country in east asia such as japan or korea you could break it up with a stay in china also chinese
34:45airlines do tend to be much cheaper so you can also take advantage of the cheaper chinese fares
34:52if china's not on your bucket list there are still plenty of other options so there are certain
34:58destinations that will do certain promotional activities where travelers leave the airport if
35:05they have a long stop over and have a look around the country and then take their ongoing flight
35:11sometimes even stay the night in some cases i would have a look and see if any destination that you're
35:17stopping over and uh we'll we'll let you do that because it's a great way to to get a taste of
35:22another country abu dhabi's stopover program allows etiad airways passengers with a layover of at least 24
35:30hours to book up to two free nights in a premium hotel it also offers discounted hotel bookings for
35:38longer stays of up to six nights
35:43if you want to try connecting low budget flights websites like skyscanner and kayak are good places
35:49to start because they can show the cheapest routes with the connecting flights the only word of
35:57caution that i would give you need to know that if one leg of your trip gets cancelled or delayed
36:03neither airline is under any obligation to compensate you because you're not flying with the same airline
36:07so just keep that in mind make sure that you leave enough time for the changeover in between because
36:13you will also have to pick up your luggage so with some clever planning and the right insurance
36:21you can bring the cost of your long haul trip down and there's more
36:29for some of us flying somewhere exotic is what long haul is all about the sights and smells of
36:37india or the food of thailand are unique but for some destinations the views and the vibe can be
36:46replicated in a location that might be a lot cheaper to visit and when the average cost of one of
36:53these holidays for a family of four is five thousand pounds that's tempting i'm nicola i'm 27 and i'm
37:01from stevenage and i love holidays nicola has chosen the azores for her upcoming trip with husband josh
37:10it's often quoted as a duke for hawaii but can it really give the feel of a long haul holiday
37:17for a fraction of the price we picked the azores mostly because of the wildlife and the greenery and
37:23i love whales and we knew that it's a great place to go whale watching
37:27it's also a great place to go if you want the destination vibes without the price tag
37:34a flight to honolulu can set you back almost three grand but flights to ponta delgada are 95
37:42cheaper at less than 150 pounds and being in the atlantic off the coast of portugal means the azores
37:50are just four hours away a lot closer to home if you can't stand a long flight and you can't find
37:58the budget to go for hawaii i think it's a great in between the scenery and the wildlife and everything
38:03is priceless right that has got to be some kind of new record check-in only opened eight minutes ago
38:13and we are already through security london heathrow offers direct flights to the azores
38:19or if you want to stop over take a budget flight from your closest airport to lisbon
38:24and another low-cost flight to ponta delgada we have just arrived in the azores and the flights are
38:31about three and a half hours in the end and it's crazy that somewhere that feels so far removed from
38:38the uk is only a three and a bit hour flight but does it live up to the hype we're going out whale
38:45watching so so excited we just saw bird whales and a baby and now we're going on to look for some
39:00other species fingers crossed to see a bit more the deep sea canyons and nutrient-rich currents of the
39:07azores make it the perfect home for whales dolphins and other cetaceans with up to 28 different species
39:15recorded in its waters the north coast of the island and just look at the view it speaks for itself
39:26the volcanic nature of the islands combined with the temperate and humid atlantic climate
39:31is what helps create the stunning azores landscape not to mention the islands themselves are actually
39:38the top of huge mountains rising from the ocean floor so we have just had pancakes in the park and
39:45some local tea it came to about 26 euros for the pair of us so really affordable the average cost of a
39:53three course meal for two in ponta delgada is 40 euros compared to 102 dollars in honolulu
40:01even with the exchange rate when it comes to eating out the azores is half the price of hawaii
40:08it is absolutely stunning and i can fully see exactly why everyone says it's a dupe from hawaii
40:15there's so much greenery the mountains it's absolutely beautiful with your plane fare taking
40:25up so much of the cost of a long-haul trip it's definitely worth thinking creatively about which
40:32airline you use or which destination you go to that way you can sit back relax and enjoy
40:39your well-earned break with a nice extra chunk of spending money coming up the latest trend to
40:51give your holiday a cinematic twist oh that was here
40:55there's a huge new trend that's transforming destinations across the world it's part of the
41:12new wave of tourism powered not by guidebooks but by screens have you ever wondered what it's like to
41:19cruise through the place where they filmed king kong many of us are choosing destinations inspired by
41:26our favorite films pp lane here we come tomorrow morning jack from belfast is in thailand where there
41:33are no shortage of blockbuster worthy beaches and it's absolutely amazing here it's been the location
41:41for films like bridget jones the edge of reason the beach and classic bond films the man with the golden
41:47gun and tomorrow never dies we made it james wonder island and it's amazing it's beautiful
41:56and the tour guide also told us that jurassic park has been shot here it's a trend so popular it's got
42:03its own name set jetting it's very early in the morning but there's loads of people
42:10already so i think it's going to be very busy today but the more famous a location is the busier
42:16it's likely to be so i would say if you're thinking about set jetting chances are you're going to have
42:23more fun the more obscure your tv show is because it's just something really niche you can do with
42:29family and friends and you know it's a great time you don't have to go too far for a set jetting
42:37experience there are plenty of hot spots all over europe movie fan john is in malta where surprisingly
42:44there are over 40 set jetting locations today we're in the ancient city of medina to do some
42:50game of thrones series one set jets john's visited over 170 locations across 20 different countries so
42:58here we are in a place where gladiator 2 was filmed where paul mescal runs up the steps to join the arena
43:05and here i go
43:06eric knacktreeb is behind a set jetters app connecting film locations to tourist boards
43:15producers and holiday makers how big is set jetting and film tourism it's been estimated to be in a 66
43:25billion dollar industry uh somewhere between 100 120 million people a year just visiting filming
43:31locations around the world any tips on how to choose a location to go set jetting one of the examples
43:38that you might think of is you know the high density of filming the area of new york that's expensive
43:43uh there are a lot of scenes but if you actually look at where most of the marvel films were shot
43:50it'd be in cleveland cleveland has a high density of filming locations it's a lot cheaper to travel to
43:57and experience than new york city the cost of filming in new york versus other big cities means
44:03that some set jet destinations are actually closer than you think the street scenes for the latest
44:09spider-man movie brand new day had a surprising stand-in for new york glasgow and glasgow is also
44:16gotham city in dc films the batman and the flash and the location for indiana jones and the dial of destiny
44:27britain is home to many incredible set jetting locations and i've come to blenheim palace in
44:33oxfordshire to visit one myself from bridgerton oh that was here to napoleon and even harry potter
44:46blenheim palace has been featured in scores of films and tv shows over the years
44:51i met with head of operations emily spencer to learn about blenheim's set jetters
44:59we've definitely seen visitor numbers climbing over the last few years certainly after we have
45:03a large blockbuster film that comes out and it's connected to blenheim then we know we get inquiries
45:07and we know we get bookings off the back of that it's been dubbed the white lotus effect after both
45:14sicily and hawaii saw a 300 surge in tourism after the show and it's a hit with younger generations
45:22with a large percentage of gen z and millennials planning their trips based on film and tv locations
45:31do people ever come and try to sort of recreate a scene or take a picture in the spot where that
45:36character was definitely i think i've seen a little bit of sort of bollywood dancing in the middle of the
45:40great court a little bit of james bond action and and certainly we see people dressed up as bridgerton
45:45characters you've got people going around the palace and just suddenly you spot somebody going
45:48through in a bonnet and that makes our day as well stuck for inspiration for your next long haul holiday
45:57well take a look at your favorite movie or tv show and set jet go
46:27and then we'll see you next time
46:32and then we'll see you next time
46:34bye
