00:09Leave me, Messi!
00:11Cut to sight!
00:13Hey, that's a lovely part!
00:14I'll go better!
00:16Oh my world!
00:18Caravan, la gioca per pillo!
00:20Pillo, pillo!
00:21Per grosso!
00:22La gira col sinistro!
00:24BOOOOOOOL!
00:28BOOOOOOOL!
00:29Hello!
00:36Time has passed at 2026 Oversight Headquarters in Miami.
00:40Director of Integrity Ian Fletcher has been here for nearly three months,
00:44in which time a lot has happened.
00:47And with the opening ceremony now suddenly just eight weeks away,
00:51there's a lot to think about.
00:56Good morning, Will.
00:57Oh, yeah, hey, good morning.
00:58That's great, thank you.
01:00Yeah, no worries, yeah, cool.
01:01Anything you need to tell me about today?
01:03Yeah, I don't know, like what?
01:04Well, no, I'm asking you.
01:05Oh, cool, yeah, no worries, yeah, cool.
01:07Oh, yeah, so there's this guy trying to get a hold of you, Howard Cottch.
01:10Oh, right, yeah, it's him.
01:11Yeah, I don't know who he is.
01:12No, well, as far as I can work out, he's basically a headhunter.
01:16Okay, what?
01:17No, I mean, I think he's working on the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles, isn't he?
01:20Yeah, so he keeps phoning?
01:21Right.
01:22Look, he's called again twice already this morning.
01:24Okay, then I think you need to be a bit firmer with him.
01:26Yeah.
01:26Okay, so next time he calls, say that you've spoken to me, we've discussed it,
01:30and I'm sorry, but this really isn't the right time.
01:32I've got enough on my plate with 2026 as it is,
01:35so I'm sorry, but I'm not going to be speaking to him at this time.
01:38Okay.
01:39Okay?
01:39Yeah.
01:39These people are pretty tough, you've just got to be tough with them too.
01:42Oh, yeah, cool, you're tough, yeah.
01:44No worries, you're cool.
01:54Okay, so we are very lucky to have Vincente with us today.
01:58Truly, yes.
01:59After all, we know how busy he is.
02:01Absolutamente.
02:02Right.
02:03But he has done us the courtesy of stopping off in Miami on his way back to Mexico City.
02:08Actually, it is an honour for us.
02:10Gracias.
02:10And coming in today just to take us through his very incredible vision for the opening ceremony,
02:15which I think you're going to find, what can I say, it's quite something.
02:20Exactly.
02:20So, gracias, Ryan.
02:21Gracias, todos.
02:22Gracias.
02:23This morning, as the opening ceremony takes shape, the executive team are meeting its creative
02:29director, Vicente Guajardo, the renowned Mexican film director, who has been working
02:34in close approximation with 2026 lead events producer, Ryan Hertz.
02:39So, first of all, I want to say to you, this is a great honour for me to be creating
02:45this
02:45show on the world stage in Mexico City, now, in this moment.
02:51Truly.
02:51And what I ask you now, please, take everything you know about opening ceremonies, closing ceremonies,
02:59this kind of thing.
02:59Take everything you know, everything you have seen, and throw it away.
03:05Forget it, yes?
03:06It.
03:07Is.
03:08Gone.
03:09Well.
03:10So.
03:11Exciting.
03:12Okay.
03:12Good.
03:20Regarded by many as a visionary, especially by those who haven't worked with him.
03:24Guajardo broke through on the world stage when his film Entanglement picked up the Oscar
03:30for best film not in any language in 2021.
03:33His opening ceremony is to be a unique live collision between creative forces chosen from literally all over Mexico.
03:41When you make a piece of art, you are in control, yes?
03:44You are in control, and you are not in control.
03:48It is a chemical reaction.
03:51Then you bring these people together, and you say to them, you are free.
03:55Now, tell me who you are.
03:58Tell me who I am.
03:59Tell me what we are doing here.
04:02Tell me what this is.
04:03And then, in the end, we know.
04:06We find out, yes?
04:09Truly.
04:10I believe it is a kind of miracle.
04:16Right, okay, so, well, I think, first of all, just to say thank you, Vincente.
04:20Oh, my God.
04:21I mean, that's really, well, it's amazing to hear about.
04:24Right.
04:25Gracias.
04:25I told you, right?
04:26Yes.
04:26This is a great story we are telling here.
04:28Yes, well, and so just, you know, in layman's terms, when it comes to telling our story,
04:35in terms of what's emerged from this amazing collaboration, I mean, what has emerged in the end?
04:42Excuse me?
04:43You know, just so we're all clear at this stage.
04:45Absolutely.
04:46Okay, so then, you are not listening, yes?
04:48Well, this is the point of what we are doing here.
04:51This is the point.
04:52When we arrive at our destination, then we know where we are.
04:55Right.
04:55We know it finally, all of us, for the first time in this moment.
04:59And this is what we share with the world.
05:02It is not before or after.
05:04No.
05:04It is unique.
05:07In this moment, we are alive.
05:11It is not like anything else.
05:14Yes.
05:16Yeah.
05:17Like I said, right?
05:31Okay, fine, the guy is a fucking genius.
05:33Terrific.
05:33But apart from anything else, there is zero reference to the US.
05:37Right.
05:37Yes.
05:37Zero.
05:38In the opening ceremony?
05:39Right.
05:40Well, or Canada, actually.
05:42Well, no.
05:42Now that I think of it.
05:43Of course, yes.
05:44I mean, what is this?
05:45The mask of fucking Zorro?
05:46Excuse me.
05:47Oh, yes.
05:48The wall.
05:49I mean, for fuck's sake.
05:50Meanwhile, the senior executive team have repaired to the meeting room to unpack Vicente
05:55Guajardo's plans for the opening ceremony.
05:57Yeah, so I mean, Ryan.
05:58Sure.
05:58I'm sure I saw an early draft of what was going to happen in the opening ceremony at some point.
06:02Right.
06:03Okay.
06:03Uh-huh, yeah.
06:04Absolutely.
06:04Okay, so this was the opening ceremony, Bici.
06:06Yes.
06:07I have it here.
06:08Right.
06:08Well, I mean, Sarah, for instance.
06:10Sure.
06:10I seem to remember a whole sustainability strand running through it.
06:13Absolutely.
06:14Thank you, Ian.
06:15No, of course.
06:16So, we've been working with teachers and school children from disadvantaged inner city areas across all 16 host cities to
06:22raise awareness.
06:23Great.
06:23Using the stories they generated, they came up with the beautiful story of Chichamita.
06:28Right.
06:28Chichamita.
06:29Right.
06:30So, Chichamita is a figure representing the Chichimecas people.
06:33Okay.
06:34The people who founded Mexico City in the pre-Hispanic period, back before everything.
06:38Sure.
06:38Okay, exactly.
06:39Yeah, right.
06:39So, anyway.
06:40Yeah, so he's not doing that.
06:42What?
06:42It's not happening.
06:43He's not doing it?
06:45Yeah, so that document you got there, the Bici, one of the first things he did was he took that
06:49document and he shredded it.
06:50Right, okay.
06:51No, no, no.
06:51Like he literally printed out a hard copy and shredded it in front of the team.
06:55Right.
06:55Literally one of the first things that happened.
06:57Vicente, Vicente, what are you doing?
06:58Yeah, so if a key step in dealing with a problem is to recognize you've got one in the first
07:02place, I think we can say that we've achieved that.
07:04Exactly so.
07:05And perhaps we can say tick, yes?
07:07Okay, so actually we've not even started with the problem here actually.
07:10Right.
07:10So can I just say I can't tell you how great it is to be able to talk about this
07:13stuff.
07:14Yes, well.
07:14For me this is so great.
07:15Good.
07:16So I guess I was waiting for the right moment to drop this.
07:20So the White House has asked to see plans for the opening ceremony.
07:24Right, okay.
07:25Great.
07:25The White House?
07:26Right.
07:27Okay, no, no, no.
07:27It's pretty clear that this is coming from the President himself.
07:30Right, well, yes.
07:31Oh, and by the way, at the moment he thinks he's making the opening speech, but at the same time
07:34so does President Sheinbaum of Mexico.
07:36Right.
07:36Just thought I'd throw that one in there for the fun of it.
07:38Yes, and does Vicente know about this?
07:41Vicente?
07:41I mean, have you told him?
07:42Right, what do you think?
07:43Right, okay.
07:44For fuck's sake.
07:53Sala.
07:53Yes, hi Eric.
07:55Thank you so much for this.
07:55Sure.
07:56I mean, I'm hoping it's not going to take long, whatever it is.
07:59Of course.
07:59Yes, exactly so.
08:00It's later in the morning.
08:02And F***ba Chief Coordinating Attaché Eric Vandiputrens has invited VP Sustainability and Climate Strategy Sarah Campbell to meet a senior
08:10woman from HR for an open-ended discussion to establish whether she's okay.
08:15It seems that an anonymous member of the public has contacted the oversight oversight department to complain about the professional
08:23conduct of a senior executive.
08:27So, I guess this is my fault. I should have warned you.
08:30Of course it's not your fault. I mean, how dare he?
08:33You don't know him.
08:34What's beyond any doubt for Sarah is that as well as being anonymous, that person is also her ex-husband.
08:40Taking advantage of a junior and vulnerable female colleague.
08:44Right.
08:44It's ludicrous.
08:46It's legal jargon.
08:47Well, I know it is.
08:47He's a lawyer.
08:48Yeah, I know he is. I don't care.
08:50He's coming after us.
08:51Coming after us?
08:52Right.
08:53What does that mean?
08:54One thing I do know, though, so I am not a vulnerable female.
08:58Well, no, exactly.
08:59I am not.
09:00No.
09:26Right.
09:31so this is terrible uh-huh it's Tuesday and 2026 events producer Ryan Hertz is
09:40back to update the executive team on developments with the opening ceremony
09:44and overnight the White House has sent over a mood board of moods they'd like
09:49to see in it I mean perhaps the first thing to say here Ryan I mean as a
09:53pallet of you know of things this looks pretty heavily US focus huh yeah right
10:00and I suppose that's one story to tell here excuse me but I'm assuming that as
10:05far as Vincente is please I ask you do not send me this shit right this shit I do
10:10not look at it yes but then also just more generally when it comes to our other
10:15friends and stakeholders in the whole 2026 we have the opening ceremony at the
10:19Estadio Azteca in Mexico City for a reason well yes yeah just remind us okay so
10:25people have been playing soccer in Mexico for thousands of years thousands of
10:29years yeah since before the U.S. even invented itself excuse me okay okay so
10:33the U.S. did not just invent itself okay what okay stop it please stop it
10:44this is not about Mexico excuse me it's not about the U.S. or even Canada sorry
10:49Owen no sure if you're telling the story of the Chichimecas people you're
10:53telling the story of all of us this is a story about the world before it all went
10:58wrong right when people understood the land they lived on because it told them
11:02who they were and we really need that story now yes yes we need to have that
11:07story told to us like children and this is our chance to tell it to the world
11:15yeah can I just say I'm with her yes thank you Sarah no sure then we can say in
11:22this moment we are all Chichimecas yes yes
11:25well so before we get into the solution based phase of this Ryan that's it is
11:30it there's nothing else we need to know oh yeah oh oh yeah there's more right so
11:35for the duration of the tournament they want to rename the Azteca Stadium the
11:39Stadium of the Americas right okay oh interesting the Stadium of the Americas
11:46uh-huh mm-hmm right
11:55oh yes like I can do that for you no it's okay yeah but that's like what I do yes
11:59I
11:59know but sometimes it's just good to have something to do with your hands for
12:02Ian after the meeting it's time for a coffee
12:05yes then there's this other guy trying to get hold of you not the other guy yes
12:08yeah I don't know like he sounds a bit yes I think I know who he is like he keeps
12:11asking for your personal number yes yes I didn't give it to him no good yeah so
12:15anyway I afforded you the email he sent right yes yeah I suppose I should ask
12:20really did you read it the email yes yes so like a lot of it I couldn't
12:24understand no well we're probably just as well I think yeah just as well yeah
12:28there you go yeah cool yeah no worries yeah thanks this only one gonna be tough
12:33with him yes thanks well yeah no worries you're cool
12:42right right absolutely although you should probably know the Olympics in
12:482028 is not something I've been thinking about up to now like there's
12:52enough for 2026 right but I guess I was just curious to hear a bit more about
12:57the whole sustainability brief there right meanwhile with a headhunter on the
13:01loose the opening ceremony finally coming towards them in one way or another and
13:05change in the air people are starting to think about the future I will say I'm not
13:10sure I've been headhunted before so oh well that's kind of you kind of you to say
13:18that right so I wasn't gonna talk to him originally right I mean I guess he's
13:28just some guy you know headhunter doing his job well yes I know he's been trying
13:33to get hold of me too right but this is LA right sustainability actually needs
13:38something there like they get it I kind of invented it you are serious I don't
13:43know and this is all to do with what's happened so this is not going to go away
13:47right well you mean he's not gonna give it up he's not gonna stop okay fine but
13:51that's his stuff now I'm not gonna let him do this to us so what you'd leave
13:55well I mean how's that gonna help I don't help us I mean so what if this was a
14:02moment for a new start a new start right for us what if this is a solution
14:07waiting to happen
14:24okay well so obviously quite a lot to think about this morning uh-huh yep I
14:28think it's me yeah right it's Thursday and there's a lot to think about this
14:31morning overnight the complex and sensitive issues surrounding the opening
14:35ceremony have become more sharply defined I mean Ryan I suppose the first
14:38thing is in terms of the boycott threat itself oh yeah I mean how seriously
14:42should we be taking this sure right right
14:48yes so following rumors of the White House's plans to rename the Azteca
14:52Stadium the Stadium of the Americas the Mexican team is now threatening to
14:56boycott the tournament altogether and several other countries are threatening to
15:00follow suit I mean I suppose basically is this real excuse me or could it be part of
15:04some is it real well I just mean we changed the name of the stadium they're
15:07not playing okay right and there is no work yes okay well it's simple well good
15:11to get clarity on that straight away sure this is an existential moment for the
15:16oversight team if up to now they've been caught between seriously Hispanic and
15:20relentlessly American visions of the opening ceremony they're suddenly facing a
15:24situation where there may be nothing to open at all unless they can find a
15:29common brink to walk everybody backwards from I mean let's think about this
15:33because in the end this is about people isn't it people yeah I mean it always is
15:37so excuse my language here but what the fuck does that mean well so in terms of
15:40the White House I mean what is it that the president actually wants here what do
15:45you mean what does he want he wants to steal the Azteca Stadium from the Mexican
15:48people well that's something we need to talk about obviously no it is not but in
15:52the meantime thinking laterally is there anything we can offer him that might
15:56make him feel good huh anything we can offer him I mean just as a way of taking the
16:01heat out of this uh-huh yeah well there's Greenland I suppose okay
16:08Greenland great and I'm thinking that would probably do it right sure I mean
16:12Eric is there a way of finding out if there's something that might work here
16:15maybe using a back channel I guess I was thinking maybe through Zurich well you
16:19know just to bypass all the politics here and then perhaps we can say is there a
16:23problem in our world today that cannot be solved when great men share a golf cart
16:27excuse me yes well a golf cart huh so for me guys that's not a back channel
16:31that's more of a front channel so then maybe there wouldn't be any problems in
16:35the world today if all these men were not playing golf yes yes well huh I think
16:39that's a bigger question uh-huh yep we know yeah no I mean to be fair that's
16:42huge right yes and just so I know I mean hypothetically in terms of any
16:48meetings or interviews or whatever I mean that could be done by zoom could it all
16:52you know right yes but beyond the opening ceremony for Ian this is a week
16:58with a number of things to think about and a number of people to talk to about a
17:02number of different things I mean thanks for getting in touch in the first place
17:05I'm sorry I'm so hard to get hold of but absolutely yes and obviously I'll get
17:11back to you and right yes yes no I'm sure it will okay okay so just to say before we
17:34start I think I'm
17:34right in saying Gabriella Ryan isn't with us this morning no he is not I mean I'm not quite sure
17:39what
17:39but so Ryan will not be with us because he's not here right yeah no he's gone yeah and the
17:44story
17:45okay good so Eric I gather we have intelligence back from Zurich well really so Emily right okay
17:55so what are we looking at here do you really want me to answer that or a picture of the
17:59president yes
18:00yeah on the big screen okay yeah huh Friday morning and with the opening ceremony crisis deepening
18:07and more nations threatening to pull out following the White House's intervention it looks as if
18:12thanks to some covert back channel activity by Zurich they may have found an answer to the question of
18:18what you give to the biggest man in the world to make him feel good yeah so what we're saying
18:23to him
18:23is he's going to be sitting there watching whether Melania's got her giant hat on we don't know yes
18:28well right so he looks up and he pretty much sees himself on the big screen any time as much
18:35as he
18:35likes okay huh so the information we have this could be very helpful to us in the wider picture meaning
18:42what if we could give him that then some of the other stuff might well who can say okay so
18:48what I am
18:48hearing from their comms people we're gonna need a figure here yes no right of course a figure exactly
18:53okay an actual percentage of available screen time compared to anyone else right so this is
18:58going to be fine right yes okay okay it's become clear that the possible breakthrough will depend
19:12on detailed negotiations with the White House the Mexican authorities and various other parties
19:17as to the precise percentage of time that so-called dignitaries will have on screen during
19:23coverage of the opening ceremony okay right absolutely it's been tense and it's been difficult
19:31but eventually it looks as if they might have finally got there 63 percent guys right that's a
19:39great outcome right well that was what it is an outcome they asked for like 95 right this is a
19:45terrific deal so just to be clear because this is freaky stuff when it comes to time allocated to
19:51shots of these guys during the ceremony we're saying 63 percent of them will be a president
19:55right exactly Jesus exactly and in the meantime we're saying to the Mexican president that she
20:00has 29 percent yes yeah well because she is Mexican and because she is a woman that's her shit right
20:05excuse me look do we want this opening ceremony to happen or not well yes I think we can say
20:10yes we
20:10do yes yes we do yes and in the meantime Gabriella would it be an idea to give the Mexican
20:15team a sort of you
20:16know an unofficial heads up that things are going to be okay just to get the de-escalation process
20:21underway yes so I don't want to be picky about this but just before we get into some kind of
20:26de-escalation
20:27frenzy here we have 63 percent I'm trying hard not to visualize that by the way 29 percent president
20:34Shane Baum exactly because look don't so that's 92 percent right right and the other 8 percent is
20:39our guy right oh yes it's Zurich okay uh so we know for sure our guy as you call him
20:44is always 15 percent
20:46yes right because what always 15 percent no no no what are you insane yes completely that's a hundred
20:51and seven percent right 107 so actually this is enshrined in the official statutes of the tournament
20:57yeah yeah you see I'm sorry but for me that's too much we just negotiated this whole fucking deal yes
21:02I
21:02mean on the upside I suppose the good news is all we need to do now is just find another
21:05seven percent
21:05from somewhere what yeah no hundred percent yeah so yeah well okay no no no so we are not getting
21:10down below 63 percent that is not going to happen well Mexico is not going below 29 yes this is
21:16the
21:16whole history of our country right um yeah because I guess where I was going with this is what about
21:21Canada excuse me oh right yes Canada yeah what do you mean what about Canada well I guess you know
21:27just
21:27what about Canada really yes no good point whilst the numbers are being re-crunched this is a good
21:38moment for Ian to catch up with his assistant oh these look nice yeah no so they're Eric's right yes
21:44John maybe they're Eric's yes I don't care and it's a week where there's a lot to catch up on
21:51oh yes
21:51so Ryan Hertz would like to meet you all right yeah for like a coffee or something to talk about
21:54what
21:55happened yes yes yes he's suggesting two weeks time two weeks time yeah Thursday yeah he thinks
22:00he'll be out again by then right I'm pretty sure I'm not going to be here then okay cool so
22:06in fact
22:07I should probably say well you should probably know in fact you'll hear this soon enough anyway
22:12I'm not going to be here then what so I'm not going to be here I'm sorry
22:25I mean I've been talking to them for the past week or so zoom interviews with people in LA and
22:30so on so one of the things about this particular role for various reasons it starts quite soon
22:35well really soon actually so if I was going to make a decision and then here we're not far off
22:41the opening
22:42ceremony now so we're almost there so in the end I suppose it seemed as good a time as any
22:47really
22:48so is it a professional thing or right or is it something more you know no so this isn't what
22:56I thought was going to happen when I came out here any of it I mean I didn't think I
23:00was going to feel
23:01this way about someone not at this point in my life anyway or any point in my life really but
23:07here I am
23:08if that answers your question yes well I mean yes
23:32Ian Fletcher's shock decision to leave Miami and accept a senior role in the 2028 Olympics
23:37in Los Angeles is a reminder for everyone that nothing lasts forever but sometimes the big
23:44things in life can happen fast and for Ian himself this is a moment that could be not so much
23:49an ending
23:49as a new beginning so we are ready we're all here yes well yes yeah cool yeah I suppose now
23:55is as good
23:56a time although hang on where's Sarah Sarah oh she was here a moment ago but I can't see it
24:00ah yes
24:01Sarah yes where is Sarah yeah I don't know yeah
24:10he called me in the car this morning and he's going after custody now if I go
24:17right where Sarah is it turns out is up on the terrace Lily says mom
24:22go do it you deserve it I'll be okay she's 16 and she's a young woman but I look at
24:31her
24:32and there's a nine-year-old girl in there somewhere I can see it in her eyes and
24:38I'm scared yes I never used to be scared
24:47I'm sorry I'm so so sorry
24:59okay okay thank you having established where Sarah was and why
25:04Iain's task now is to go back downstairs and deliver a leaving speech in the knowledge
25:09that if endings can sometimes be new beginnings they can equally often just be endings what can
25:14we say about Ian Fletcher well we can say it was an honor and a privilege to serve under him
25:21but most of all we can say thank you thank you Ian for steering us through dangerous waters to within
25:28reach of safety and dry lands before leaving us to take up your duty on another great ship out on
25:33the
25:33high seas how we shall continue from now on we can never know but in the meantime thank you Emily

26:57we can try to save it and just so you know this is not stuff I'm going to forget I
