After leaving a trail of dead marine life, along Western Australia’s Pilbara coast, there are serious concerns about the ongoing effects of Ex-Tropical Cyclone Narelle. The category-four system smashed the Ningaloo reef in the middle of a critical coral spawning seasons, leaving scientists worried about the reef’s future.

00:02One week on from Tropical Cyclone Norell, the consequences for the Ningaloo Reef are still unclear.
00:09Yeah, I'm really concerned given what's already washing up on the beach.
00:13Ranges have found hundreds of dead shorebirds and at least 30 dead marine mammals, including dolphins.
00:20Warmer than average water temperatures helped Cyclone Norell reach Category 4 strength off Exmouth.
00:26Even though she passed over land a couple of times, she was able to quickly regain her strength because of
00:34the warm ocean temperatures, very warm ocean temperatures.
00:39Tropical Cyclone Norell arrived at the Ningaloo Reef still recuperating after a record-breaking marine heatwave, which saw many of
00:46its northern corals bleach.
00:47Scientists had already spent weeks here studying the first corals spawn since that traumatic event,
00:53but it now seems like many of those freshly fertilised embryos have been lost.
00:58It's still possible another spawning event will help the reef's recovery.
01:02We have one more spawning window this year in April
01:06and we're really hopeful that the remaining adult corals that are on the Ningaloo will be able to reproduce.
01:13While the scientists wait, this group of Exmouth locals is taking a look for themselves.
01:18Everyone who lives here is here for the water, so it's so good for them to be back here on
01:23the reef,
01:23snorkelling with all the fish and seeing their backyard again.
01:27After a brutal chapter, it's hoped Ningaloo Reef will get the time it needs to bounce back.
01:33見 up always perfect, but it's like this.
01:34It was very dark, the traditional fish to the pond.
01:34I thought it was a good sampling event.
01:36It was very slight training for the fish to the lake.
01:36It was very difficult to make the fish.
01:36It was very nice to have fish, but it didn't want to be pretty sure.
