Going underground (again): Paris catacombs reopen to visitors after major safety renovations

After five months of work, the famous Parisian ossuary will be offering its many visitors a new, more immersive experience from Wednesday 8 April.

00:05Twenty meters underground, the catacombs are not just a labyrinth of stone, but the guardian

00:12Since the 18th century, the sanctuary has housed the remains of millions of Parisians.
00:18From the anonymous victims of the revolution, to the great figures of history, the very
00:23soul of the capital rests here, frozen in limestone.
00:50Faced with the ravages of time and humidity, certain sections of femurs and skulls have
00:55undergone meticulous restoration to bring back the full impact of the site's macabre

01:01We had to do all the work in five months, with very specific access and evacuation conditions.
01:10We had masonry, electricians.
01:13All this little world worked underground, together, with very particular cadence during
01:21the five months of work.
01:22The result of a colossal effort, this marks a true renaissance for the catacombs.
01:28Between sublime scenography and immersive sound, every detail has been reimagined to offer the
01:332,000 daily visitors, an unprecedented sensory journey into the heart of this sanctuary unique
