The family of a trainee teacher from the Perlis Campus of the Institute of Teacher Education (IPG), who drowned while kayaking at Pantai Merdeka near Sungai Petani on Saturday (April 4), has expressed hope that such a tragedy will never happen again.

Joey Ling Lin Siang's aunt, Kee Ching Ching, 46, said the family is also calling for a full and transparent report into the incident by the relevant authorities.

00:03A family is calling for answers and for change after two trainee teachers drowned during a
00:10kayaking activity at Pantai Merdeka near Sungai Pitani last Saturday. The victims,
00:16both students of the Institute of Teacher Education's Perlis campus, have been identified
00:21as Christopher Lingjia Siang, age 21, and Joey Linglin Siang, age 20. Both were from Sarawak.
00:28Speaking to reporters outside the Forensic Department of Hospital Sultana Bahia late Monday night,
00:34Joey's aunt said the family is also urging the Education Ministry to review the syllabus for
00:40outdoor programs and to ensure that such activities are conducted with proper safety protocols in place.

01:35Education Minister Fadlina Siddiqui also met the victims' families and paid her respects.
01:41She said the ministry takes full responsibility for the tragedy and that a transparent, thorough,
01:46and comprehensive investigation is underway. She added that any breaches of regulations will be addressed
01:52and no one will be shielded from accountability. The minister also confirmed that several officers
01:58directly involved in organizing the kayaking program will be temporarily reassigned to the
02:03Perlis State Education Department while the investigation is ongoing. The victims' bodies
02:09departed for Penang International Airport at 11.15pm ahead of their final journey home to Sarawak.
