00:24:24champion the last five holes I could really enjoy you know I was like okay
00:24:30I've got an eight-shot lead I remember just like trying to find my dad in the
00:24:37crowd you know there's so many people there and I I couldn't really find him
00:24:42but walking down the the 18th he's walking down the left side
00:24:56him being there and being able to watch me fulfill a lifelong dream of winning a major
00:25:02championship after what happened I mean you talk about being resilient I mean
00:25:18that's what you call I think that made me believe that you know I could really do
00:25:32some special things in the game
00:25:41Bryson DeChambeau has a one-shot lead Rory McIlroy drops to 10 under
00:25:51gorgeous control from McIlroy as the ball curves around the back there's just a little slim
00:25:57finger of green and McIlroy's managed to find it now McIlroy cranny hit straight back here if this
00:26:06goes in the 35 year old will go back into a share of the lead borrowing from left to
00:26:15right sends it on its way looks good and in and in for McIlroy the first birdie of his final
00:26:21round
00:26:24and Bryson DeChambeau is going to drop a shot here Rory McIlroy is going to be back in the lead
00:26:29at the
00:26:29Masters oh you're gonna love it haven't you you really have got to love Augusta on a Sunday it is
00:26:36absolute madness and this is going to be just incredible theater if it carries on like this
00:26:45with the honor would be good to hit a good shot here put the pressure on and he has
00:26:55got a chance to actually have a bigger lead than he did at the start of the day that's exactly
00:26:59right
00:27:01this one in go three ahead
00:27:10and now the walls for Rory here at the fourth
00:27:15watch this drop watch this reaction
00:27:30i first meet Rory in um 2011 so he's won the us open at the time
00:27:35he had this unwavering clarity on his long-term goals and golf at age nine for him to say
00:27:41you know i want to turn professional win all the majors it's a pretty bold ambition
00:27:49i want to be remembered as one of the best players that ever played the game
00:27:56but to be remembered as one of the best you need to you need to knock off a few of
00:28:02those major championships
00:28:05there are four majors the masters tournament the u.s open the open championship and the pga championship
00:28:16the mop top makes its way up the 18th this is for the all-time margin of victory in pga
00:28:24championship history
00:28:34i didn't want the persona of being content with doing what i've done in the game of golf i wanted
00:28:39to
00:28:39to prove that i had the hunger to do more
00:28:43the hype built incredibly after 2014 when he won the open at hoy lake the champion
00:28:52mcelroy led the british open wire to wire mcelroy joins jack nicholas and tiger woods is the only
00:28:57players to have won three majors by the age of 25. so here's a question is he the next tiger
00:29:03woods
00:29:04golf may have a new tiger woods he was positioned as you know the next successor in the world of
00:29:12golf
00:29:13you know i think that definitely came with um a level of expectation no question
00:29:31i mean what a summer you became the first european player to win three separate majors which just
00:29:36just leaves the masters that's the next one the next target yeah the green jacket yeah that's the
00:29:41one that i'm that i'm in for next year um it would complete the career grand slam i think only
00:29:46five
00:29:46golfers in history have got it so it'll be a huge thing to go for it at 25 years of
00:29:51age
00:29:54trying to join that list of people that have won the grand slam it's like you're trying to
00:29:59to put yourself among these absolute legends of the game gene saracen ben hogan
00:30:12gary player
00:30:15jack nicholas
00:30:18tiger woods i absolutely idolized him and that's where you know there's all of these little doubts that
00:30:25start to creep in am i worthy of this is this what i'm supposed to do
00:30:37it's like imposter syndrome like it's like this like what you know no why of like this me
00:30:46i'm part of you know that's that's that's where it sort of gets to i think that's the scary part
00:30:52rory mccleroy for the masters next year in his first green jacket and the career grand slam
00:30:58and he leaves it short no cannot do that in april
00:31:04i think the significance of the masters for him and for
00:31:08the wider golf story it became very real after 2014.
00:31:16it's been heartbreak so many times this is his 11th chance to complete that career grand slam
00:31:24for most of my career it's never just been about the masters
00:31:30and from 2015 to 2025 it was the masters and
00:31:37oh no sit ah sit sit sit all right
00:31:42i feel like that grand slam conversation just brought a lot of baggage with it
00:31:47maybe i didn't put myself all the way out there in this tournament at certain points because
00:31:53you know if you get just this close to doing it and then it's taken away for some reason like
00:31:59that's that's hard to that's hard to handle as the years have went on like i talked to
00:32:06different people about that pressure
00:32:11i had lunch with jack jack nicholas receives a rousing ovation as he walks onto the final green
00:32:20we talked about all kinds of things with the game and and what to do and and and i talked
00:32:25to him about patience just be patient with it it's going to come you're too good a player for it
00:32:30not to
00:32:34count many people do it different ways you figure out what your abilities are you only try
00:32:41to do what you can do not what somebody else can do i knew what jack was getting up because
00:32:47my
00:32:47tendency when i was younger was to play the aggressive swashbuckling golf there was some drive
00:32:53by rory mcelroy my goodness he's it's gonna be hard to beat a guy like that that hits so bloody
00:32:58far
00:32:59second from the pine straw oh that's another good one beautiful shot that sat down like a butterfly
00:33:06with sore feet but i would say i was too much at either side of the spectrum so i'd be
00:33:13really
00:33:13swashbuckling and really really aggressive but then when it mattered and i was in contention i would
00:33:18get way too tentative and way too cautious oh he's lost it as well i don't believe this you want
00:33:28to
00:33:28play smart but you also want to recognize when you have your chances
00:33:35glory has put some tough holes behind him we're going to the top seventh
00:33:44it is the most difficult fairways to hit this week miss this fairway at your peril
00:33:56seven was a tee shot all week that i struggled with
00:34:06seven was a tee shot
00:34:07not happy with the tee shot this is very far left hits one of the trees over there
00:34:19bryson looking for a spark
00:34:25give up some distance for accuracy
00:34:33when i was walking up to it i'm just like please have something have some sort of shot some sort
00:34:38of
00:34:38gap like the one thing harry and i always say to ourselves is all i want is a backswing and
00:34:43a gap
00:34:45just talking to harry diamond his caddy yeah i mean i think i can get it pretty much there
00:34:53harry was begging me he's like just chip it out we can make four this way i'm like no no
00:34:58i've got
00:34:58a guy i can see a gap here and he's like what are you talking about there's nothing there i'm
00:35:02like
00:35:03no no i can i can get a nine iron up and i can i can do this that's i
00:35:07like it i feel like i've done a shot
00:35:24one little bit of that pine tree
00:35:27and the ball lands on the green and almost goes into the hole wow what a shot from rory mccleroy
00:35:35and he's roaring with laughter he cannot believe it that's the kid in mccleroy that's the young kid
00:35:42playing golf he cannot believe he's pulled that off
00:35:47to take those shots on at such a crucial time nobody else is going to do it only him
00:35:55let's find out what bryson is thinking
00:36:01it was actually very well played
00:36:08yeah just brilliant
00:36:15if there was a fault at roy i think he has a tendency
00:36:20not to manage his game when he has pressure situations
00:36:38i don't know you leave the shorts yeah he didn't think he could
00:36:41it's not going to go away today
00:37:01that final round was maybe a little bigger because of what
00:37:04happened at pinehurst the year before
00:37:08you know another chance to win a major
00:37:11got off to a great start i just you know i just got a little uneasy and a bit tense
00:37:19excruciating short misses for mccleroy
00:37:24i was in the 18th tower calling that final round nobody's had more pressure on him over the last 10
00:37:29years everybody in the world knows that rory hasn't won since 2014 won a major
00:37:37bryson the pinehurst kind of run over the crowd a little bit
00:37:42what bryson has is is real innate grit and you don't feel grit from rory
00:37:51i know rory has said it afterwards that's you know he probably got out of his rhythm a little bit
00:37:57by
00:37:58thinking a little too much about the situation which how do you not
00:38:09what happens on nine between you and bryson
00:38:13so we both hit good drives in the eye and we both hit really good second shots
00:38:19here's bryson
00:38:23it's a beauty
00:38:35big shot for rory must fly it to the hole to avoid the shoulder off the bunker
00:38:42and it's judged really really nicely by mcelroy
00:38:47he's putting uphill from about the same distance as bryson de chambeau trying to get it to 13 under par
00:38:55i thought it very clearly was my pot i thought his ball was slightly closer than mine
00:39:02we sort of look at each other and he's like i'm like well i think it's me to go
00:39:06and he's like well i think it's me to go
00:39:09it's a very gamesmanshipy match play thing really both of us want to putt first
00:39:15because if you can hold that putt before your opponent puts pressure on them
00:39:20he goes well why don't we just throw a tee up for it to see who goes first and i'm
00:39:26like no this
00:39:27is the final round of the masters this isn't some like game on a tuesday afternoon somewhere i'm like
00:39:33no i wasn't going to wilt in that situation i was just going to stand firm
00:39:41so i said there's a ref ride like why don't we get him up to come and measure and he
00:39:45said no no it's
00:39:45fine it's you can go anyway i don't care and i just felt like that was a really big moment
00:39:54mcelroy putting first for birdie
00:40:09i was proud of myself for holding my grind
00:40:15now that the man is on de chambeau to answer it back he has to answer right here
00:40:28and mcelroy has told him who's the boss here
00:40:34glory will go to the second side with a four shot lead
00:40:41i felt like going into that back nine that bryson wasn't really um
00:40:46a factor in the tournament at that point
00:40:53on to the second nine the most exciting nine holes in golf plus the most pressure packed
00:41:06it was gary player the three-time masters champion who said you don't win the masters with strategy
00:41:12you win it with nerves and we're going to see some nerves tested here on that back nine today
00:41:21it's not going to make it that could go in the water yes the ripples tell the story
00:41:29this is where it started to come undone back in 2011
00:41:37you know for rory having the lead there i'm sure the memories of 2011 going back to the 10th hole
00:41:46how's
00:41:47this tee shot going to go
00:41:53my goodness he must have hit a tree
00:41:59we'll remember what happened back in 2011
00:42:062011 was the big one where i probably had the greatest chance
00:42:11but i for me in my mind it wasn't just 2011 it was all the years after that where i
00:42:17felt like i
00:42:17had chances and just i didn't do this right or i didn't do that right
00:42:22i could go through every single year and tell you where it went wrong welcome to this tradition
00:42:28unlike any other wow it's gone off sideways welcome to this tradition tradition unlike any other
00:42:40how do you manage wanting to win this tournament but not the desire being so big that it becomes an
00:42:46obstacle hello friends welcome to this tradition tradition unlike unlike any other it just hit off
00:42:53a sprinkler head on up into the azaleas do you think all the expectation about the kind swan has
00:43:00had an effect do you think you found the balance between how that motivates you and how that pressures
00:43:06you you feel the weight the scrutiny it takes to be considered the greatest talent in the game do you
00:43:12feel like you're sort of middle-aged now in your prime or how do you how do you see it
00:43:15do you believe you'll win this if not this year some year
00:43:22trying to block out the noise is the best thing but admittedly it was hard for me to do that
00:43:32i've always been a big responder to encouragement and positive feedback
00:43:40it's all about the confidence i i find
00:43:45you see when rory started really i used to take rory out every sunday play nine holes
00:43:55i used to change all the holes on the scorecard the first hole being a par four i used to
00:44:01change it to
00:44:02par five it encouraged rory you know so at the end of the day we used to go in for
00:44:09the coke and a pack of
00:44:10crisps and the boys and the boys say well what'd you shoot today three under you know rory used to
00:44:15love that you know he's really the site you know three under par that's brilliant rory you know
00:44:21and you see when rory started to shoot under power he had no fear because it was all in there
00:44:31so many around the world raptured by this moment anxious to see it happen
00:44:47perfect he's a different player today than he was in 2011.
00:44:57my start on sunday in 2025 was way worse than my start in 2011. it would have been really easy
00:45:06to
00:45:06get frustrated after that first nine but i think because of all that experience over the past 14
00:45:12years i didn't panic i knew there was still a long way to go club comes out of his hands
00:45:22doesn't matter what a shot
00:45:29i felt like my patience was rewarded with how i played that hole
00:45:36and into the hole it's another birdie for rory mcelroy
00:45:43and the triple bogey back in 2011 is a distant memory for mcelroy
00:45:57bryson it was surprising to me that he wasn't on his game i think a lot of people thought
00:46:03he would go out there and really contend when you had this pairing of rory bryson in the first nine
00:46:11holes and rory's got a big lead now it's almost like you forgot there were other players playing in
00:46:18the tournament watching justin rose a few hoes ahead of rory
00:46:27a long way away here for birdie at 11. well he's gonna need something special if that is going to
00:46:33transpire oh that's special justin rose not out of it yet with the emergence of justin in the back nine
00:46:47all of a sudden it's like okay you know here here we go
00:46:56let's headed toward the first mound gentle
00:47:04that is six inches away from being wet said all week he wasn't going to pay any attention to the
00:47:12leaderboards i wonder if he took a little peek
00:47:18just right that's what rory's concerned there's no leaping enough because this guy is charging
00:47:24justin rose for birdie oh my goodness tied for second
00:47:32that brings pressure but but i still had the lead
00:47:36should rory have another stumble justin rose could be in position
00:47:46let's see if rory chooses the conservative target here on 12.
00:48:01that's just fine i made a good two putt make three there
00:48:10i'm like i've got through 10 11 12 and even par like i'm very happy
00:48:17and he will march off to the 13th team
00:48:22bobby jones famously wrote that several tournaments have been won or lost here
00:48:28a lot of people's chances to win the masters have become unraveled on the 13th hole
00:48:37i think this is the golf tournament this shot right here
00:48:41there's bunkers to the left there's water to the front and the right
00:48:46and his hopes the first green jacket may have just sunk to the bottom of ray's creek
00:48:52now we're going into another dimension again
00:48:58you're trying to overcome all of the history these memories all these different things
00:49:06that are going through your head while you're playing that golf course and trying to win this
00:49:10massive tournament
00:49:16and that's one of the hurdles that i have found so hard to overcome is like you have to get
00:49:21over
00:49:21the demons you have on that course but you also have to get over all those other little ghosts
00:49:27that are lurking around the corner that aren't yours either
00:49:36so usually i would approach it as a hole that i can get to the green and two and give
00:49:42myself an eagle
00:49:43opportunity but i didn't want to take on too much risk
00:49:50i turn to harry and say at this point i've got a nice little bit of a cushion and i'm
00:49:54like
00:49:54do you like playing this as a three shotter and he's like love it so i hit three with off
00:50:02the tee
00:50:09and then i lay up with an eight iron
00:50:15the first two shots went as well as they could have
00:50:22that's that scoreboard i was talking about as you walk up 13 it's impossible not to see it
00:50:27tried most of the week to avoid those big white scoreboards which is easier said than done
00:50:33once i got to the ball i think justin had just made another birdie
00:50:43are you kidding me
00:50:46and suddenly the pressure is going to become enormous on mcelroy
00:50:52there was a bit of a reaction from the crowd
00:51:06i'd make my backswing and at the last moment
00:51:13i sort of just leaned into it a bit
00:51:28i can't explain it he's blocked this short little shot by miles oh another poor shot under the extreme
00:51:40pressure so now he's got to go for a bogey
00:51:45makes you wonder about the strategy of just backing off and deciding from the tee
00:51:49that you're going to play this as a three shotter your adrenaline your body has been conditioned
00:51:54to just go for it today
00:52:03especially the way he played those shots of seven jimmy when he went the nine irons through the trees
00:52:08over the trees was so happy and bouncing around and so aggressive
00:52:14this is crucial this to limit the damage
00:52:24and that's a double for mcelroy
00:52:27his fourth of the week
00:52:31no player has won the masters after making four double bogeys or worse
00:52:39and the masters is wide open once again
00:52:46and now the spectators these patrons are feeling that something is really brewing
00:52:50over the course of this final couple of holes
00:52:54it was the first time where i'd had a moment in the tournament where my mind
00:53:02didn't automatically go to like a positive place
00:53:06roy's lost a spit in his mouth right now cannot believe it
00:53:23he's got to keep the train on the tracks now
00:53:29my thing with augusta i think during the course of my career it would be like one stretch that would
00:53:34like ruin the tournament for me big swing at it and comes up short
00:53:45because a little bit of the scar tissue had built up i was like always waiting for something bad to
00:53:50happen
00:53:53mcelroy for his par
00:54:13and he has now lost the lead at the 89th masters tournament
00:54:23just when you thought it was a sure thing now you're like you can't win now
00:54:29i had to go i had to go and pour rosie a drink camera down you know you know i
00:54:36actually had a drink myself
00:54:38i mean i'm i know rory like the pack of my hand
00:54:44you see each year coming up to the masters
00:54:48rory was always he wasn't rory
00:54:51no he was always very
00:54:55edgy is that the word if you talked about the masters he was a bit like jumpy you know
00:55:02he was trying too hard i don't know if i'm proud to admit this or not proud to admit this
00:55:08but i've
00:55:08tried a lot of things going into augusta whether it's getting to the tournament really early getting
00:55:14to the tournament really late not playing the par three tournament the day before playing the par
00:55:18three turn not doing media one year playing practice rounds the weeks prior or not playing
00:55:22practice rounds the week prior hypnosis no it's not it's not like that it's not hypnosis like you
00:55:29think where you're not very deep sleep someone taps you and you knocks you out and it you know it's
00:55:36it's uh it there's a little more science to it
00:55:41my game was excelling at like the sort of run-of-the-mill tour stop but once i got to
00:55:45the masters
00:55:46i would play well but not well enough people would always compare it to earlier in my career and
00:55:53the the major record earlier in my career and i started to almost resent the major championships
00:56:00for having such a massive um importance in the game it just that it started to eat away at me
00:56:09i hadn't won a major for 10 years now
00:56:14i think i lost probably a little bit of my love for the game in that time period
00:56:23you know that childlike joy and enthusiasm
00:56:28how you gonna get out of that one
00:56:32i've always been very comfortable on my own and sometimes i'm stubborn and sometimes i'm
00:56:41reluctant to reach out for help and i feel like i can figure it out my own
00:56:48but i needed to get over that
00:56:57i remember i was really struggling and i drove from the scottish open to the open championship at
00:57:04birkdale and i listened to the audiobook golf is not a game of perfect by bob rotella
00:57:10too often freud's theories are boiled down to a belief that people are the victim of circumstances
00:57:16beyond their control i don't buy that a person with great dreams can achieve great things
00:57:25a person without the confidence to pursue his or her dreams has consigned himself or herself to a life of
00:57:31frustration and mediocrity i've known bob rotella basically the whole way throughout my career and
00:57:39i'm like why don't i just call it why don't i just call him
00:57:44you know we're all dealing with doubt and fear failure never ruins anybody doubt and fear will kill you
00:57:54with rory i mean we prepare by anticipating we're gonna miss all kinds of shots and putts
00:58:00we're gonna get all kinds of bad breaks but you have to see what you want rather than what you
00:58:06don't want or fear might happen
00:58:13rory mcleroy has watched his lead disappear he knows the magnitude of the moment now
00:58:23rory and i talk a lot about how do you feel when you're playing your best golf you know when
00:58:28you're
00:58:28like the happiest when you're most joy-filled and you're really loving the game that you tell me you
00:58:34love when you walk off the golf course every night if you can go back to your room look in
00:58:39the mirror
00:58:39and go man i loved how i felt out there today you know you gave yourself your best chance and
00:58:45that's
00:58:46all we can do so can he hit one great t-shot on the par fives and it changes day
00:58:59he could be blocked out he's in the fairway but he could be blocked out with his second
00:59:05shot a little grimace from him rory's got to play about a 20-yard hook he's hitting out of the
00:59:11shadows
00:59:11left-hand side of 15. yeah i mean a best case scenario is throw it in that right bunker and
00:59:18try
00:59:18and get it up and down i needed to pull something out of the bag at that point because
00:59:25you know i was going in the wrong direction when you're amped up and when you're under pressure
00:59:29those are the hardest are for me anyway they've been the hardest shots to hit
00:59:38i stood up and i made the most trusting committed swing
00:59:50i knew it as soon as i hit it and that's when i started to walk after it
01:00:18that was one of the most fantastic shots i've ever seen first of all
01:00:21i don't think many people would have tried it but i think he felt like he needed to at the
01:00:24time
01:00:26sometimes you feel like you need to make a shot you do it
01:00:30i'll remember the feeling of hitting that shot for the rest of my life
01:00:38i don't know if i'll ever hit a better golf shot
01:00:43under that amount of pressure again in my career
01:00:52poise to make eagle to take the lead
01:01:04rory has a chance to put a hand on the light switch right here
01:01:16it was feeble he goes back to look at it there's the bad news he's got to live with this
01:01:22this is
01:01:23about exercising demons here carl he's not done exercise yeah i don't know why he went back over
01:01:27to look at it that was a bad stroke he knows it so it's a pretty still to take the
01:01:34lead
01:01:36it's excruciating what you've got to do to try to close this deal
01:01:42one day you know when he was a teenager i heard somebody in the crowd say
01:01:48if that kid could putt he'd win everything
01:01:57it was my least favorite part of the game growing up
01:02:01i always enjoyed the longer part of the game better i always enjoyed the driver always enjoyed
01:02:08hitting iron
01:02:11the closer you get to the hole the more tense you can be
01:02:18i always felt like well it has to feel hard because that's what it's always felt like
01:02:23and then when you feel like you've had a perfect putt that doesn't go in
01:02:26you start to question for example on 15
01:02:31i missed that putt on the low side so then when i'm hitting the putt on 16 i'm like well
01:02:36that putt at the last broke more than i thought maybe i should give it a little less break
01:02:47and then you miss it on the high side two putts in a row that could have easily gone down
01:02:58rose has a putt to tie the lead
01:03:00and in the hole got a chance oh wow what a putt justin rose
01:03:16no lead is safe around here
01:03:22we're all guilty at points in our careers whether it's part of your swing short game
01:03:28or on the putting green with thinking about the mechanics of how to
01:03:33reading the instruction manual how you're supposed to do it rather than just letting it happen
01:03:41it looks pretty good yes it's in the fairway
01:03:46he needs a birdie either on 17 or 18 to win it outright
01:03:53when i first helped rory with putting the brunt of what we talked about this is resilience
01:04:00you have to have that morsel in the putting green than any other part of the game
01:04:04because you don't go with 18 putts you know you miss almost every hole you're missing a putt right
01:04:12he's going to have this putt for birdie to move to 12 under and the lead with one hole remaining
01:04:20when the best players of the world miss putts yeah they can get angry or they can get upset
01:04:27but they know how to get back there and and give it a chance to be great again
01:04:42to the 72nd hole here at the 89th masters
01:04:49justin had finished at that point and then all of a sudden was like wow i you know i need
01:04:55a par to win
01:05:02how hard is this t shot just under normal conditions well it's the narrowest on the golf course
01:05:13what a time to deliver this
01:05:18he walked after it careful it's a beauty one step closer
01:05:30and now the moment for rory mcelroy
01:05:41oh he's gone in the bunker
01:05:45he has to get up and down from the sand and if he's going to do this he will have
01:05:51done it the
01:05:51hardest hardest way imaginable i'm i don't have any words to describe what i've just seen because that's
01:05:59impossible for any top class player let alone someone as good as rory mcelroy to miss the green
01:06:06at 125 yards
01:06:12if you listen to televised golf they're constantly talking about how you can't make mistakes like
01:06:20that if you want to win tournaments like this and of course everything i teach is well of course you
01:06:25can
01:06:26people do it all the time
01:06:33so how do you respond when you miss a shot
01:06:38just stay patient stay patient wait for good things to happen again under normal conditions
01:06:47he would get this up and down
01:06:54the ball was in a good spot it was in a good lie it was on the upslope i was
01:06:58like
01:06:58if you need to get a ball up and down from a bunker this is the lie that you want
01:07:27there's a putt to win the masters so you know you have the
01:07:32that steady murmur of the crowd that goes to deathly silence while you're over a putt
01:07:39it's crickets
01:07:42how do you stay athletic and instinctive and hit it
01:07:47and not think about everything that's at hand for the career grand slam
01:08:02the story's been written million times
01:08:08the questions have been asked repeatedly
01:08:13when if can you do it how badly do you want it
01:08:23all of those moments lead to this
01:08:39all of those moments lead to this
01:09:06going to a playoff
01:09:12after that disappointment will he be able to regroup reset
01:09:24i should have got it done in regulation i should have made a four from where i drove that ball
01:09:29there's just all these different things that are going through your head
01:09:35he just wasn't up to it
01:09:37he underperforms in the heat of battle
01:09:41he got on the precipice of winning this tournament and instead of driving over the line he hesitated
01:09:56it's a pretty long walk from the 18th green to scoring
01:10:00there was a definite tension in the air
01:10:06but then i'm walking with harry
01:10:09and harry said to me he said pal we would have taken this position on monday morning
01:10:14and like it just snapped me into such a good frame of mind
01:10:19and i was like yeah we would have taken this position monday morning absolutely
01:10:24we got on the golf cart and it was like the first bit of peace that i'd had all day
01:10:31it was like this quiet serene you know long shadows hear the birds chirping i was like this is this
01:10:38is really nice
01:10:41it just got me thinking so positively about the moment you know i had a second chance
01:10:54the first thing i thought was all right well let's just hit the same shot that you just hit 10
01:10:59minutes ago
01:11:01make the same swing and hit the same drive
01:11:05sudden death up the 18th for the masters green jacket
01:11:11one of these two players is going to go home absolutely crestfallen
01:11:25and that looks good they's ripped that he's absolutely ripped it and that one is sailing down the fairway
01:11:32completely outdriven justin rose so much adrenaline in that two fantastic tee shots
01:11:41jr had a really good drive and i hit a good drive but jr was a good
01:11:45i don't know 30 yards behind me this is a fantastic opportunity for him to go ahead and put the
01:11:51pressure on mcelroy
01:11:59oh it's right next to the hole
01:12:03actually a little unlucky that stuck right there you thought it would have fed back a couple feet
01:12:09he hit an amazing shot right at the pin and i remember when it was in the air i was
01:12:13just going oh no
01:12:15and then again i had basically the same shot as i had in regulation but i had a flat lie
01:12:45what a shot
01:13:16from mcelroy
01:13:31the door is open again
01:13:34from mcelroy to finish it off
01:13:46this is two and a half three feet what an approach shot from mcelroy what a way to
01:13:52regather himself after the disappointment in regulation play
01:14:17look at the long shadows symbolic this moment that the journey it's taken to get here
01:14:26for all this history
01:14:45the long journey is over
01:14:47and now mcelroy has his masterpiece
01:15:05i just screamed at the top of my lungs twice
01:15:12just like this visceral release that i've never felt before in my life and it's like
01:15:20just that moment of
01:15:24it's almost like your whole career flashes before your eyes and it's like
01:15:31all the ups and the downs and the disappointments and the you know every sunday night driving away from
01:15:40that golf club feeling disappointment and you know it made it all worth it
01:15:47it was rory mcelroy against rory mcelroy and that has been the story of his career
01:15:57my wedding day was a wonderful day
01:15:59and poppy being born was a wonderful day but they were happy joyful this was like pure relief
01:16:14this is done
01:16:16this is done
01:16:46I think a lot of the people have been on that journey with me.
01:16:51And I think to see how happy they were for me to get it done
01:16:55was, like, really meaningful and special.
01:16:59Like, I never...
01:17:02Never in my wildest dreams that I think I would get to this point.
01:17:06You know, as an eight-year-old, yes, I said I want to win all the majors,
01:17:09and I want to join that list of...
01:17:10..of people that have won the Grand Slam.
01:17:14It was probably quite naive of me to dream like that in some way,
01:17:18but...
01:17:20..it's what always kept me going.
01:17:24I want to make eight-year-old Rory proud
01:17:28and make him proud that you didn't give up.
01:17:32Never landed in my mind.
01:17:35Why not?
01:17:37Why is there only six people that have ever done it?
01:17:41It must be very special.
01:17:43And I always knew my son was very, very special.
01:17:56I love you, Rory.
01:17:57Love you, too.
01:18:00And last but certainly not least, over to my left,
01:18:05my family, my team.
01:18:18They've been on this journey with me the whole way through.
01:18:23They know the burden that I've carried to, you know,
01:18:26come here every year and try and try and try again.
01:18:31And the one thing I would say to my daughter Poppy
01:18:34that's sitting over there,
01:18:36never give up on your dreams.
01:18:38Never, ever give up on your dreams.
01:18:46It was never gonna be easy.
01:18:48It was never gonna be straightforward.
01:18:50It was always gonna be a little messy.
01:18:58Yeah, it was Augusta my white whale.
01:19:00It probably was.
01:19:01That was the white whale of my career,
01:19:03and I'm glad that I caught it.
01:19:08I wouldn't say I'll ever tame it
01:19:10or I'll ever have it fully under control,
01:19:13but I think to find that persistence
01:19:15and to find whatever it is I needed to find within myself
01:19:19to keep coming back and to keep trying,
01:19:22that's the thing I'm proudest of.
01:19:24I'm proudest of not...
01:19:27..not losing hope.
01:20:13Let me be your everlasting light
01:20:22Some and there is none
01:20:29I'm a sharp line for you
01:20:32And I've got you through
01:20:35Let me be your everlasting life
01:20:42Let me be your everlasting life
01:20:50A home will never score
01:20:58And you can't confide
01:21:02When the one's by your side
01:21:04Let me be your everlasting life
01:21:11Let me be your everlasting life
01:21:13Let me be your everlasting life
01:21:45Let me be your everlasting life
01:21:45Let me be your everlasting life
01:21:49Let me be your everlasting life
01:21:52Let me be your everlasting life
01:21:52Let me be your everlasting life
01:21:52Let me be your everlasting life
01:21:53Let me be your everlasting life
