00:02How did you come up with the look and what were all your reactions to seeing Jonah?
00:06I just based, whenever I'm playing a character, I just find a lot of references,
00:10a lot from docs and reality TV and books and stuff and photography books.
00:16And Ira's look came pretty quickly.
00:19Like, because I wrote it, I have the luxury of living with the character
00:22for, like, a pretty long time before anyone else is even, like, invited in.
00:27And I was not going to play Ira, actually.
00:30And I was on the phone with Ellen Lewis, our casting director, who's brilliant,
00:33who's Martin Scorsese's casting director, who brought these guys into my life or some of them.
00:38And I was like, what about this person? What about this person?
00:42And she's like, you're doing it, Jonah.
00:44And she just was like, she's a New Yorker. She's old school.
00:46She goes, what are we doing here? You're doing it. Goodbye. Hello. It's done.
00:50You know, and she's just like, okay, I guess, you know, I'll let someone great tell me to do it.
00:55I won't assume I'm the best person for the job, you know.
00:57And did you guys recognize him, or what did you think?
01:00I didn't. I showed up, and I was like, because we didn't have any scenes.

01:05So when he showed up, when I showed up, and he approached me as the director,

01:34I was like, the gray beard and the bald head.
01:37It was outrageous, and I could not have imagined how outrageous it was
01:44until I actually saw a cut of the movie, and then I was like, it all made sense.
