00:00:00Real quick, you have not been spoiled by the thumbnail, I made it yesterday before I saw
00:00:04the movie.
00:00:05That being said, this is your final warning.
00:00:07Spoilers for the Super Mario Galaxy movie ahead.
00:00:10The Super Mario Galaxy movie has officially released, and… what, how is this video so
00:00:15early?
00:00:15Well you see…
00:00:18Yes, I went to the midnight release of the movie, and gosh, it was such a really weird
00:00:22experience.
00:00:23I originally wanted to film much more than I did, but it was really hard because there
00:00:26were a bunch of people, and it's harder to do than you think, okay?
00:00:29So instead, here's a picture of a $10 water bottle, and me standing there.
00:00:33And what did I have to say when the movie was finished?
00:00:35Yep, he certainly saved the galaxy, that was spot on with that prediction.
00:00:41There is a lot to talk about though.
00:00:43What actually happened in the movie, is it building towards something much bigger, how
00:00:46is Star Fox in the movie, and what's with the negative reviews?
00:00:50Are they justified?

00:00:56To start off, we need to go over what actually happened in the movie.
00:00:58Don't worry, this isn't going to take TOO long.
00:01:01Really quick before we get into it, too, unlike the previous All Lore Explained videos
00:01:05that I've done, I don't actually have footage of the movie.
00:01:07That would get this video taken down by Nintendo.
00:01:10So you'll have to deal with whatever was released in trailers, terrible MS Paint drawings,
00:01:14and random PNGs moving around.
00:01:16Sorry about that.
00:01:17We begin zooming through the cosmos, landing on the Comet Observatory.
00:01:21Rosalina is here, and calls the Lumas to come read a story before bedtime.
00:01:24The Lumas, like the one in the first film, are all basically children.
00:01:28They act like kids, and they talk like kids, and Rosalina frequently refers to them as
00:01:32her kids.
00:01:33I want to pause and interject real quick.
00:01:35There's a very obviously placed moment where the door in the Comet Observatory opens, and
00:01:39Rosalina is standing there.
00:01:41Proudly.
00:01:41There's enough of a pause for applause or cheers, but my theater was dead silent.
00:01:47Like, not just for Rosalina, the entire movie.
00:01:50They never cheered at all.
00:01:51They like lightly chuckled at a joke or two, but that was it.
00:01:54Nearly packed theater.
00:01:56It's midnight.
00:01:57These people went to the midnight release, and nobody said anything.
00:01:59You know, at first I was kind of concerned that it would be annoying to hear all these
00:02:02people screaming, but I would have preferred that over nothing.
00:02:05It felt depressing.
00:02:07Anyway, anyway, Rosalina goes to her bookshelf to choose a book for the Lumas, and I will
00:02:12mention that in this scene, if you look at the books she can pick from, one of the books
00:02:16has Tippy from Super Paper Mario on the spine.
00:02:19However, because Rosalina has no taste, apparently, she picks the one about Princess Peach, but
00:02:24the Lumas don't want to hear about Peach.
00:02:25They want to hear about Mario and Luigi, and the story of the events of the first film.
00:02:29They're excited for Rosalina to tell the story, but before she can, a huge slam shakes
00:02:33the room.
00:02:34Rosalina leaves the Lumas, telling them to go to bed, only to be faced with Megaleg from
00:02:39Mario Galaxy.
00:02:40Rosalina summons her powerful wand to actually fight Megaleg, and she's pretty much winning
00:02:44most of the fight.
00:02:45She blasts it with lasers, is able to dodge all of its attacks extremely fast, and actually
00:02:50knocks it over.
00:02:51It's only when one of the Lumas shows up to see what's going on that the pilot of Megalegs
00:02:55figures out Rosalina's weak point, and fires bullet bills at the room the Lumas are in.
00:03:00Rosalina obviously protects them, but in doing so, she is captured.
00:03:04Inside the robot, as expected, is Bowser Jr., who's trying to bring back respect to the
00:03:08Bowser name.
00:03:09Alongside him is Kamek, who is, yet again, a disliked henchman who keeps getting in Bowser's
00:03:14way.
00:03:15Aluma tries stopping Bowser Jr., but he ends up getting captured as well.
00:03:18They're all taken inside a massive UFO ship that Bowser Jr. controls.
00:03:23Title card, and then cut to Mario and Luigi in the desert on bikes.
00:03:27If you've seen the trailer, you know what happens here.
00:03:29Mario and Luigi are in the Toasterina kingdom, and the residents are asking for help with
00:03:33a scary sound coming from the pyramid.
00:03:35Mario and Luigi go inside to explore, they eventually find a pipe, and inside the pipe
00:03:40is Yoshi.
00:03:41A cute, silly rendition of Yoshi, who's like, I don't know, I don't want to say he's
00:03:46super different than the games, but there's also this aspect to him that's kind of a
00:03:49bit odd, in my opinion.
00:03:51He functions exactly like any other character would, and seems to have the same level of
00:03:55cognitive awareness, he just can't speak except for saying the word Yoshi.
00:04:00Either way, there's a pretty funny sequence showing how Yoshi got into the warp pipe in the
00:04:04first place.
00:04:04We see him hatching in the sewers from the post-credits scene of the first movie, while
00:04:09he then walks around Brooklyn.
00:04:11He eventually knocks over a T-Rex skeleton at the museum, and is chased into the sewers
00:04:15and through the warp pipe by the police.
00:04:17It is in this sequence, by the way, that we actually see a whole bunch of characters from
00:04:20the first movie.
00:04:21Spike, the dog from the first one, and Donkey Kong, and this is the only time these characters
00:04:25appear in this film.
00:04:27Anyway, we cut back to Rosalina, stuck in Bowser Jr.'s massive UFO.
00:04:30Rosalina asks where Bowser Jr. is taking her, and he shows her a massive, scary,
00:04:34Bowser-y planet, designed entirely like Bowser itself.
00:04:38It has lava, and the planet has like a big, scary Bowser mouth.
00:04:41And there's spikes, and rollercoaster rides, and Bowser and Bowser Jr.'s faces carved into
00:04:45a mountain, and lava everywhere.
00:04:48All of Bowser's henchmen from the first movie are now here.
00:04:51Jr. gives a speech to his henchmen about how with Rosalina's powers, they will destroy
00:04:54the universe.
00:04:55However, after tugging too hard on the chains used to hold the luma, Rosalina gets upset
00:05:00with Bowser Jr. shouting, no one hurts my kids.
00:05:02She breaks out of her chains and starts to fight with Jr.'s minions.
00:05:06The luma goes free and escapes.
00:05:08Bowser Jr., however, uses the paintbrush from Sunshine to create a goopy piranha plant that
00:05:12helps recapture Rosalina, locking her up in a chair where Jr. can start to sap her powers.
00:05:17Now back in the Mushroom Kingdom, Mario, Luigi, and Yoshi gear up for Princess Peach's birthday
00:05:21party.
00:05:22Mario has a present for Peach, and asks if Luigi thinks she'll like it.
00:05:26The movie has a repeating joke that starts here, where Mario is in love with Peach.
00:05:30It's not really a joke, but Luigi teases him about it, and Mario shyly brushes him
00:05:35off, and this kinda happens multiple times throughout the film.
00:05:38The three heroes go to Peach's party, and Mario finds her sitting alone on the roof.
00:05:42Peach admits she doesn't like birthdays.
00:05:45This isn't even her real birthday.
00:05:46This is just the day they celebrate, because it's when the Toads found her for the first
00:05:49time.
00:05:50Peach says she never knew her family.
00:05:52She spent her entire life wondering where they are.
00:05:55Mario offers her support and gives her the birthday present.
00:05:58It turns out to be Peach's famous umbrella, the one she uses in many of the games.
00:06:03Suddenly, star bits start falling from the sky.
00:06:05Everyone looks up in awe, only to see a massive shooting star crash nearby.
00:06:09Mario, Peach, Luigi, and Yoshi investigate, and it turns out to be the Luma that had been
00:06:13captured with Rosalina.
00:06:15Peach takes the Luma up to her room, and the Luma explains that Rosalina has always told
00:06:19stories about Peach, and said that if she was ever in danger, that they need to find her.
00:06:23Luma tells Peach that a giant robot took Rosalina to a scary planet out beyond the Gateway Galaxy.
00:06:29Peach, while encouraged by the worried Toads to stay, decides to go alongside the main Toad,
00:06:35leaving a note from Mario and Luigi saying that they're responsible for protecting the
00:06:38Mushroom Kingdom until she gets back.
00:06:40Montage of Mario and Luigi fighting enemies from the games and using power-ups.
00:06:44This ends with the scene from the first trailer.
00:06:46Bowser is tiny and claims to be rehabilitated, so he wants to be freed and turned big again.
00:06:51However, Mario sends him into frequent rages that cause him to reveal his true villainous
00:06:55side underneath.
00:06:56Suddenly, the ground in the castle begins to shake.
00:06:59Bowser Jr. has arrived with his UFO and has begun sucking up Peach's castle, as he knows
00:07:03Bowser is inside.
00:07:05Mario, Luigi, and Yoshi evacuate the Toads and face Bowser Jr.
00:07:09He asks for Bowser to be handed over, but Mario refuses and they have a really cool visually
00:07:13impressive fight in which Jr. uses the paintbrush to turn him into cool, purply-powered-up forms.
00:07:18Just when it looks like Mario's got the upper hand, Mega Legs descends on them with Kamek
00:07:22piloting, trying to assist Jr.
00:07:24Yoshi, however, eats Kamek and turns him into an egg, jumping into the pilot's seat and
00:07:28taking over.
00:07:29Chaos ensues and ultimately Bowser Jr., Kamek, and Mega Legs are sent back up to the UFO.
00:07:34The Mega Legs robot explodes and Peach's castle falls onto the planet below.
00:07:38Bowser is still frustrated with Mario, and yet again asks Mario to return him back to his
00:07:42regular size and free him.
00:07:44Bowser finds out, though, that everything that just happened was because Jr. was looking
00:07:47for him, and Bowser is shocked.
00:07:49He says that he was a bad father, and it's surprised that Jr. wants to see him.
00:07:53Bowser says that maybe he could reconnect with his son.
00:07:56Cut to Gateway Galaxy, a big sort of traveler's hub connecting all different worlds, filled with
00:08:01crazy different species from all different franchises and Mario games.
00:08:05We see Piantas, these wooden block guys from Galaxy 2, the metal cleaner guys from Galaxy,
00:08:10and more.
00:08:11Peach walks up to a poster of Rosalina, and suddenly has a flashback of when she was very
00:08:15young and holding onto a younger Rosalina's hand.
00:08:18Rosalina, however, let her go.
00:08:20Before she can figure out what this means, Toad is robbed.
00:08:23Ukiki, the monkey, takes Toad's bag, and he and the princess give chase, eventually finding
00:08:27themselves in a massive, seedy underbelly of the Gateway Galaxy.
00:08:31Basically the Mos Eisley Cantina of the Mario universe, I guess.
00:08:34We then see that Bowser Jr. is still searching for Bowser.
00:08:37Meanwhile, he taunts Mario into finally punching him to turn him big again, by calling him
00:08:42a tiny, pathetic failure of a plumber.
00:08:44Bowser, now big, still claims he wants to be friends with Mario and Luigi.
00:08:47He doesn't turn on them immediately like you might expect him to.
00:08:51Meanwhile, Peach makes her way to a big, six-sided casino shaped like a coin block, where all the
00:08:55walls are walkable.
00:08:56It's a cool set piece.
00:08:58Peach and Toad battle with Wart and his crew, another visually impressive crazy action scene,
00:09:03and eventually get Wart to tell them where Rosalina is.
00:09:06Yes, while they started just by chasing the monkey that stole Toad's bag, they ended up
00:09:10getting info from Wart because apparently he knows stuff.
00:09:12This is, this is kind of just one of those movies, you know what I'm saying?
00:09:15They go to do the next thing, and go to do the next thing, and go to do the next
00:09:19thing,
00:09:19and you don't necessarily have to link it up.
00:09:21Yes, they're chasing after a monkey that stole Toad's bag, and then they get to the place,
00:09:26and it turns out that they know the information they just so happen to need, and it's like,
00:09:29whatever.
00:09:29There's a level of that we can accept, but we're not at that point yet.
00:09:33We're not at the criticism point yet.
00:09:36So to continue.
00:09:38Mario and Luigi are cornered by the Queen Bee.
00:09:40As it turns out, this planet is like Honey Hive from Galaxy, and ruled by bees.
00:09:45When the castle crash-landed after the Bowser Jr. UFO let it go, it destroyed flower fields,
00:09:50and the Queen wants them imprisoned to work off the damage they did.
00:09:53But Bowser volunteers himself instead, truly expecting to do the work, no tricks up his sleeve.
00:09:59Mario tells him that he might not be as bad as he thought.
00:10:01They leave, and are brought to the Gateway Galaxy.
00:10:04We cut to Bowser working in the mines, hacking away at stones with the other bees,
00:10:07only to be rescued by Bowser Jr.
00:10:10They reunite, and Jr. reveals his full motivation.
00:10:12When Bowser Jr. was a kid, Bowser told him a bedtime story about how they would build their own planet,
00:10:17called Planet Bowser, and it would have a universe-destroying cannon,
00:10:21but they'd need the power of a space princess, aka Rosalina, to do so.
00:10:25This bedtime story, by the way, was told through puppets,
00:10:29which was super fun because it's animated characters doing the puppets.
00:10:33So it's animated Bowser with a puppet on his hand, doing the puppet show.
00:10:38I don't know, maybe it's just a me thing, but I thought it was just such a fun concept.
00:10:43It's puppets on puppets, you know what I'm saying?
00:10:46Anyways, Jr. has brought this bedtime story to life,
00:10:49and tells Bowser that he's created Planet Bowser.
00:10:52In the Gateway Galaxy, Peach and Toad deal with Rob the Robot,
00:10:55who is remarkably slow and a pretty funny gag,
00:10:58and are led to the shipyard where we see Pikmin exit a tiny little ship.
00:11:02And we also meet Fox McCloud.
00:11:04There's this great bit where Fox explains who he is,
00:11:07and we see him and the other Star Fox characters in regular 2D animated form.
00:11:11Fox explains that his warp drive exploded, blew a giant hole in the fabric of space and time,
00:11:15and now he's been sucked into a different universe.
00:11:18He's trying to find a way to go home.
00:11:20He agrees to help fly the Princess and Toad to Space Junk Galaxy,
00:11:23where Planet Bowser is, in exchange for some money.
00:11:25Mario, Luigi, and Yoshi finally arrive and meet up with Peach, Toad, and Fox.
00:11:29The six-person team then fly in an R-Wing, while Star Fox music plays,
00:11:33and are ambushed by Bowser Jr.'s ship.
00:11:35Fox blows up the turrets on the underside of Junior's ship,
00:11:38however, inside the ship, Junior has his own weapons cabinet.
00:11:41Inside of that, by the way, we see both Flood and the Poltergust.
00:11:45Junior takes out a massive bazooka, but Bowser, however, is cautious,
00:11:49and asks Junior not to kill Mario and Luigi.
00:11:51You can see that Bowser is conflicted.
00:11:53He loves his son, he wants to give him the life he told him the stories about,
00:11:57but he was truly starting to like Mario and Luigi,
00:11:59and wants to be their friend to some extent.
00:12:02Junior decides not to kill them for his dad,
00:12:04and instead shoots them with the super scope, turning them into babies.
00:12:07No explanation is provided as to why this happens.
00:12:10Junior drops the scope, and it flies down and crash lands with the R-Wing carrying our heroes.
00:12:14As Fox and Peach now on this new planet try to repair the ship,
00:12:18Toad and Yoshi try to get the super scope and turn Mario and Luigi into adults again,
00:12:22but are attacked by a massive actual T-Rex and have a big chase sequence.
00:12:26Finally, Yoshi manages to turn the babies back into adults and the T-Rex back into a baby,
00:12:31and they meet up with Fox and Peach.
00:12:33Feeling hopeless, Luigi jokingly calls for help using Fox's radio and a trucker voice,
00:12:37and the Lumas from the comet observatory hears it.
00:12:40Meanwhile, Junior tells Bowser that he's meant to be a bad guy,
00:12:43not friends with Mario and Luigi.
00:12:45Friends will just stab you in the back.
00:12:47They arrive at planet Bowser, and Bowser is awestruck.
00:12:51Cut back to Fox and the gang, as the comet observatory arrives,
00:12:54giving the heroes a viable ship to fly to planet Bowser.
00:12:58Peach goes to the library and reads the book about her from the beginning of the movie.
00:13:02The book reads,
00:13:04Once upon a time there was a brave and noble princess named Peach.
00:13:07Her story begins many years ago when she lived on a small planet with her sister Rosalina.
00:13:12The two sisters were made of stardust.
00:13:14Their love burned as brightly as the stars themselves.
00:13:17Together they could summon the power of the cosmos.
00:13:19We see, visually, a baby Princess Peach touch hands with a young Rosalina
00:13:23and have a sort of cosmic connection summoning grass on a barren planet.
00:13:27The story continues,
00:13:29but evil forces wanted the power for themselves.
00:13:32Rosalina had to send Peach away, to safety.
00:13:35The toads raised and protected her until she grew strong enough to protect them.
00:13:39Peach realizes that Rosalina is actually her sister.
00:13:43Back at planet Bowser, Junior shows Bowser everything.
00:13:46They begin to absorb Rosalina's power in a massive generator to power up their big universe-destroying cannon
00:13:51that they're going to use to destroy the Mushroom Kingdom.
00:13:53Bowser is impressed and fully commits to siding with Junior and being evil.
00:13:57He gives a rousing speech to his minions, and the final action sequence begins.
00:14:02Mario, Luigi, Peach, and Yoshi jump from the Comet Observatory
00:14:05and chase after Bowser and Junior in Planet Bowser.
00:14:08At one point, Mario and Peach fall into a pit,
00:14:10and we see Bowser Jr.'s advanced security system try and take them out.
00:14:14But from Bowser Jr.'s perspective, it's like an NES-style graphical interface
00:14:18showing 8-bit Mario and Peach jumping around a regular Mario level.
00:14:22It's super fun, that kind of thing.
00:14:24Same thing from the first movie, with all the little references and gags.
00:14:27After escaping Bowser Jr.'s trials, Mario and Peach make it to a big bridge,
00:14:31like in the original Super Mario Bros.
00:14:33Bowser appears and fights them, throwing axes and shooting fire,
00:14:36with Mario finally using one of the axes to cut down the bridge and send Bowser into the lava pit
00:14:40below.
00:14:42Jr. comes out, distraught, only for Bowser to re-emerge as Dry Bones Bowser.
00:14:46Mario and Peach run towards Rosalina, with Mario closing the gate behind Peach,
00:14:51locking him and the two Bowsers outside, to let Peach have the best chance at getting Rosalina.
00:14:56Mario, Luigi, and Yoshi fight with Dry Bowser and Bowser Jr. in, you guessed it,
00:15:00a visually impressive fight with lots of fun gags and references.
00:15:03The highlight of the fight is when Luigi gets ahold of Bowser Jr.'s paintbrush
00:15:07and uses it to draw Mr. Game & Watch, but says,
00:15:10What? You know, I never learned how to draw.
00:15:12It's a funny way to have Mr. Game & Watch show up.
00:15:16Mr. Game & Watch then actually fights with Bowser on behalf of Luigi,
00:15:19before getting cut in half.
00:15:21Jr. uses his brush to create the dragon from Odyssey as his big final attack,
00:15:25which, for some reason, immediately tries eating him instead of Mario.
00:15:30Bowser's terrified, and Mario grabs the red star that makes you fly from Galaxy
00:15:34and uses it to fly into the dragon, destroying him.
00:15:37The fight with the Bowsers is over, as Mario is now saved, Bowser Jr.
00:15:43Meanwhile, Peach makes her way to Rosalina and breaks her out of the generator
00:15:46by touching hands like from before.
00:15:49Rosalina breaks free, and planet Bowser reforms into a grassy, nice planet instead.
00:15:54The Lumas ask to visit the Mushroom Kingdom and say they want to see the castle,
00:15:57only to cut to the empty hole in the ground where the castle was.
00:16:00They all decide they'll build another castle, in a fun 2D sprite cutscene using 8-bit graphics,
00:16:06and Mario finishes it off by using the cape flying to the top and planting the flag.
00:16:10Credits.
00:16:12There are two post-credits scenes.
00:16:14The first shows Fox, who says that the princess has fixed his warp drive and he's going back to his
00:16:18home.
00:16:19Dry Bowser and Jr. are locked in prison together, with a Luma guard who jokingly threatens them.
00:16:23The second post-credits scene shows someone else getting robbed by Ukiki,
00:16:28only for none other than Daisy to show up, punch him, and save the day.
00:16:33The end.
00:16:34You know, I feel like that was a lot, but in reality the plot was very simple.
00:16:39This was not a very complex movie.
00:16:42I'm sure you're wondering what I left out.
00:16:45This is probably the shortest plot summary in any of these all lore explained videos.
00:16:50What did I leave out? Nothing.
00:16:52Like, this was it.
00:16:54They...
00:16:55I want to save criticism for a little bit longer,
00:16:59but it is true that these characters in these movies are very passive, are very reactive,
00:17:04and a lot of...
00:17:06In both Mario movies, it's something happens and the characters then react.
00:17:10And that's the same in this movie.
00:17:12Like, Princess Peach, what did she do?
00:17:15Princess Peach got the Luma who told her to go and find Rosalina.
00:17:20So she goes to the Gateway Galaxy.
00:17:22And there she reacts to Toad getting robbed and chases after Ukiki,
00:17:27which leads her to Wart.
00:17:29And Wart openly mentions knowing something about Rosalina,
00:17:33which then makes Princess Peach want him to tell her what he knows.
00:17:36And that leads Princess Peach to go and find Star Fox, who...
00:17:41And it's like that kind of thing.
00:17:43It just keeps going and going and going.
00:17:44I could keep going, you know, forever.
00:17:45But it's very reactive.
00:17:47You know what I'm saying?
00:17:48Mario and Luigi, the reason...
00:17:49The only reason they end up getting to Peach is because the things happened to them.
00:17:54You know?
00:17:55The old Bowser Jr. sucked up the castle and dropped it on the planet.
00:17:58Which just so happened to have a bee with a bug that would take them to the Gateway Galaxy.
00:18:02Boom.
00:18:03And that is how the plot is.
00:18:06There is very little...
00:18:09I had so much more to say, for example, with something like The Amazing Digital Circus.
00:18:12When I did... I think that was the last All Lore Explained video I did.
00:18:15Because The Amazing Digital Circus is filled with these, you know...
00:18:20Dialogue moments and conversations and introspective shots.
00:18:23And, you know, you could take something like...
00:18:25Oh, I mean, I don't know how many of you have watched The Digital Circus.
00:18:28But if there was a scene where, you know, Pomni said something about her previous life to Jax and Jax
00:18:34reacted weird.
00:18:35You could take that and sort of analyze it from so many different angles.
00:18:39You could... you know, the literal angle.
00:18:40What did Pomni actually say?
00:18:42What did Jax actually say?
00:18:43And then, oh, well, what does this say about the mischaracters?
00:18:45The Mario movie isn't like that.
00:18:48You know, I think that something that surprised me is that I...
00:18:52As I wrote the script, I remembered, oh yeah, Donkey Kong was in one of the flashback scenes.
00:18:56When the little Yoshi segment where we saw a silly explanation as to how Yoshi ended up on the pipe,
00:19:02Donkey Kong showed up.
00:19:03And I remembered, oh yeah, and then he showed up later.
00:19:06Right?
00:19:07Wasn't... wasn't he around?
00:19:09And I realized, no, Donkey Kong wasn't in this movie at all, except for one little cameo.
00:19:14And so, that's the thing.
00:19:16Like, could you say that he was missed?
00:19:18That his character, you know, not having him in this film deeply affected it?
00:19:23No.
00:19:23You know what I'm saying?
00:19:24And so, when you're listening to this and thinking like, well, wait, what was the story?
00:19:28The only real story outside of action happening because it has to happen is that Princess Peach was sad.
00:19:39Because she didn't know her family.
00:19:40And then it turns out that her family was Rosalina.
00:19:42And they had this sort of cosmic backstory that she didn't know about.
00:19:46So she wants to save Rosalina, and she does.
00:19:49That's it.
00:19:50There is no stakes outside of Rosalina's safety.
00:19:54And, I mean, there are in the sense that Bowser Jr. is going to use Rosalina to power the cannon
00:20:00that can destroy planets.
00:20:01But, I mean, that's just like a big third act final reason that you have to stop Bowser.
00:20:09And not much more.
00:20:11And so, throughout this whole movie, like, there's not much to say.
00:20:17There's not much to say about the characters.

00:20:23I want to talk more lore, though.
00:20:25And this is important because I don't really think this movie has any.
00:20:30Yes, you heard me right.
00:20:31I know that's either obvious or obviously wrong based on who you are.
00:20:35You might be saying, yeah, of course the Mario movie wouldn't have any lore, dummy.
00:20:38It's the Mario movie.
00:20:39It's probably something, I think, that's something that a lot of you would say to me.
00:20:43But others would probably scoff at me and say, we just saw Piantas, Pikmin, Star Fox, Rob, and Mr. Game
00:20:49& Watch all at once.
00:20:51Here's my thought.
00:20:53When Fox talked about how he's from another universe and we see him actually animated in 2D,
00:20:58I sort of thought, okay, this makes sense if they're actually doing it.
00:21:02They're setting up for a Smash Bros movie.
00:21:05Fox is from another universe, meaning that there are multiple Nintendo universes.
00:21:09Any character that doesn't make sense to be in the Mario universe can potentially join the Smash Bros movie
00:21:15if they're in a different universe from Mario and get there like Fox did.
00:21:20I almost felt like perhaps showing us this little glimpse of Fox was like teasing more.
00:21:25There could be a story in this other universe.
00:21:28However, I think this is kind of quickly thrown out the window.
00:21:31Mr. Game & Watch, Rob, and Pikmin are not at all tied to the idea of being anything other than
00:21:36fanservice.
00:21:37There is no establishing these characters.
00:21:39Mr. Game & Watch is even a stick figure drawing who gets torn in half rather than a video game
00:21:43character.
00:21:44There is no indication that Star Fox has any plans to join back up with Mario or re-enter the
00:21:49Mario universe.
00:21:50I saw plenty of people saying that the reason they had all these crossovers and the reason they did Galaxy
00:21:55in the first place
00:21:56is to cast a wide net, so to speak, introduce as many characters as they can, grow the Mario universe
00:22:01as fast as they can,
00:22:02and build towards that Smash movie.
00:22:05I think that's false.
00:22:06I don't think that's why they did Mario Galaxy, and I think that that's not happening.
00:22:10On top of the recent Miyamoto comments, which admittedly are sort of being taken out of context,
00:22:16he said that, in terms of the Mario movie, it's not a Super Smash Bros. movie,
00:22:21and so you can't be expecting a Mario movie where all the Nintendo characters appear.
00:22:25However, he does like doing things like putting the Pikmin in the movies.
00:22:29However, the way he said it, I mean, I don't think there's going to be a Smash Bros. movie anytime
00:22:35soon.
00:22:36They didn't grow the Mario universe itself with this movie whatsoever.
00:22:40We see that Wart and his gang appear, sure, that's cool, but outside of that, I wouldn't say that that
00:22:44counts as growing a universe.
00:22:47Sure, the Pikmin could appear in the future, but it's not like they were anything other than a little gag
00:22:51reference for fans.
00:22:53Or take, for example, Rosalina.
00:22:55There was a good amount that you could have done with Rosalina that was simply chosen not to be done.
00:23:00Rosalina's backstory, for example, was not only rewritten with the Peach sister twist,
00:23:04but everything from the original book and Galaxy was discarded.
00:23:08Rosalina does nothing, serves no other purpose than to be saved.
00:23:11Going into the next Mario movie, we're not in some enlightened age of Mario where,
00:23:15oh, after Galaxy, now we have all these things established we can work with.
00:23:20We have just as much as the first movie.
00:23:22I'll get into why I think this is later, but I think it's going to be more of the same.
00:23:26Maybe the next one will be called Mario Sunshine, or Super Mario and the Rise of Bowser, or something like
00:23:32that,
00:23:32and it'll be another generic adventure with Mario and his friends,
00:23:35and possibly a Nintendo icon who shows up as a helpful side character.
00:23:39Maybe next time, who knows, it'll be Kirby or Ness.
00:23:42For everything that could theoretically be spoken about here, there's nothing to actually say about it.
00:23:47What did you think of the inclusion of the Mario 2 characters?
00:23:50What could that mean for the further development of this franchise?
00:23:53Nothing, really.
00:23:54They were simple goons who served as obstacles for less than three minutes.
00:23:57They don't have backstory and they weren't written in a way that makes you think they'll be back for more.
00:24:02What's up with Daisy?
00:24:03Well, I don't know, man, but based on Rosalina's five to ten minutes of screen time max, I doubt much
00:24:08is up with Daisy.
00:24:10Yoshi, too. For as much fun as I think he was as a character, there's nothing to actually say about
00:24:15him.
00:24:15If this was the first movie, I'd have more to say about the actual deep lore. I'd be able to
00:24:19talk about the way that Brooklyn and the Mushroom Kingdom are separated.
00:24:22I'd question exactly how the warp pipes work and who built them.
00:24:25I'd try and nail down exactly what kind of world the film was building.
00:24:29But even compared to the first one, which is by no means a good movie, I don't think this one
00:24:34does any of that, even a little.
00:24:37We're taken to space not as a way to expand the Mario universe, but as an excuse to completely change
00:24:42the scenery as fast as humanly possible.
00:24:44And to put whatever they want in front of our faces.
00:24:47I can't ask a question like, where might the Pikmin have come from? Because that raises annoying questions.
00:24:53We haven't seen any environment in these movies in which the Pikmin would be suited as they're so tiny.
00:24:58So the answer is either they're landing on regular planets like the ones we've seen and are blending in because
00:25:03they're so small,
00:25:04or there are specific tiny planets meant for them.
00:25:07The existence of the Pikmin and Olimar at Gateway Galaxy implies that they're aware of their size being much smaller
00:25:12than everyone else in the world.
00:25:13But the problem I'm having here is that this is a pointless question. There is no answer to this.
00:25:19Pikmin showed up because it's a Pikmin reference. That's it.
00:25:23Fox was very cool. I do hope we get either a standalone 2D or 3D movie.
00:25:28The brief introduction to Fox was probably the only really great part of the entire movie.
00:25:33They cut to an actual photo of Slippy, like the Slippy UI screen from Star Fox 64, and it was
00:25:39the only part of the movie to get an actual, vocal, you could hear it laugh out of me.
00:25:44But I wouldn't say that Fox is gearing up to return to this universe anytime soon.
00:25:48The Mario movies, in my opinion, are like Nintendo's show floor, to utilize whatever characters they want in whatever ways
00:25:54they want, allowing you to test drive them around for a little while before whisking them backstage where you'll possibly
00:25:58never see them again.
00:26:00But that doesn't matter because they've already made their money on this project, and next time they'll have even more
00:26:04enticing characters show up.
00:26:06I view these movies as sort of singular things. It's not so much that, you know, I've told this story
00:26:12before, I think.
00:26:14Actually, I'm not sure, but in Halloween Horror Nights, I was at Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios online for
00:26:19a haunted house.
00:26:20And, like, a couple guys in front of me were these two guys, and they were, I think they were
00:26:24a little bit older than me.
00:26:25And they were talking about the Mario movie, and they said, oh, dude, did you hear that Mario Galaxy was
00:26:30announced? That's crazy.
00:26:31And the guy was like, yeah, what? How could they do that already? And I was, I was so confused.
00:26:38Because then the next guy said in response, which is even better, I don't know how they're doing Galaxy already.
00:26:43They haven't even introduced Yoshi. Now, you can say that this is, like, fake people I've made up.
00:26:48I promise you they were real. And, I mean, all power to them for liking that kind of thing and
00:26:52for talking like that.
00:26:53But in my opinion, I remember thinking, like, what? Like, how could you, they don't, there's nothing to introduce.
00:27:01That you don't have to explain Yoshi before you get to Galaxy.
00:27:04The amount of people that I've seen that were like, man, I would have liked them to take the Mario
00:27:08universe a little slower.
00:27:10I don't want to jump right into Galaxy. I wish we had gotten Mario 2, 3, World as movies first.
00:27:15What, what, where's the movie in that? Where, where's the movie in Mario World? You know what I'm saying?
00:27:22What, oh, well, we could have done the story where Mario has to fight the Koopalings or something.
00:27:29Like, all of these Mario games are, there's a good guy who is objectively good, will never, ever ask anything
00:27:35about his character.
00:27:36Because he's Super Mario and you're playing as him. And there's a bad guy named Bowser who's captured the princess.
00:27:41If you want to do Mario 3, Mario World, Super Mario, any of them like that, the movie would be
00:27:51pretty darn simple and pretty darn similar to the first one.
00:27:55You know, like, that first one was all of those classic Marios in one. It wasn't the first Mario Brothers
00:28:00game. You know what I'm saying?
00:28:03And that's just this thing that I think is weird, where people were like, oh, it's the Galaxy movie, so
00:28:08they're adapting the story of Galaxy.
00:28:10When it was clear, at least to me from the beginning, they were never going to adapt the story of
00:28:14Galaxy.
00:28:14This is the concept of Mario Galaxy. It's very much like how Nintendo operates with their games.
00:28:20You know how every Nintendo game now has to have some big gimmick that is sold to people, even though
00:28:24it's a small part of the game.
00:28:26You know, to be honest with you, I have kind of been disappointed with Nintendo recently, so I can't even
00:28:32think of a good example.
00:28:33Oh, no, I can. Metroid Prime 4 had the motorcycle. Did you play Metroid Prime 4?
00:28:37Did you know that the worst part of the gosh darn game is the motorcycle? And yet that was the
00:28:42big selling point.
00:28:43If they could have called it Metroid Prime 4, too fast, too furious, two Metroids, they would have.
00:28:50They loved that darn motorcycle so much. There was an amiibo of the motorcycle. Are you kidding me?
00:28:55And, like, if you remember any of the Mario Tennis ones, like Mario Tennis Ultra Smash, the whole game is
00:29:01sold on the concept of the Ultra Smash.
00:29:04Meanwhile, the Ultra Smash is just, yeah, you know, you can charge up a special move.
00:29:09That's how I view the Mario Galaxy movie. It is not, nobody sat in a room and said, you know,
00:29:15guys, we should adapt the story of Galaxy.
00:29:18I think there's a lot there. Nobody says that. They say, okay, we need to repackage the movie we've already
00:29:25basically made.
00:29:25We want to make another Mario movie, and we want to have similar beats, similar, you know, ideas, but we
00:29:33want to put in characters that people, you know, like different characters.
00:29:36We want to put in, you know, how can we sell another movie? How can we make people go back
00:29:40and basically watch the same movie?
00:29:42And I'm not saying this in, like, a malicious way. This is kind of all movies. It is very rare
00:29:47that the sequel of a movie is uniquely different.
00:29:50Like, Terminator 2 is like the internet YouTube film bro answer for what a good sequel is, and it's true
00:29:57because it's so different.
00:29:59It completely twists everything. With something like Mario or Home Alone or, boy, I don't know, Sonic the Hedgehog.
00:30:06There's only so much you can do to convince people that this new movie is different enough from the first
00:30:11to be worth seeing.
00:30:13And one of those things is like what Mario does. This isn't Mario. This is the Mario Galaxy movie.
00:30:20We're going to have Brie Larson as Rosalina, and we're going to have...
00:30:23And yes, they obviously pull from the game, but the galaxy theming, the space theming, it's not so much because
00:30:30they want to tell that story.
00:30:31It's because they need some aesthetic to package the movie with to sell it as a sequel.
00:30:37And that's what they do. That's why Galaxy exists as it does, and that's why I see something like, you
00:30:43know, I want to see this like some other people do.
00:30:46I want to see this like the guys online at Universal did. I want to be able to go home
00:30:50and talk to my friends and say, like, oh my gosh, guys, how are they going to do Daisy?
00:30:54Like, what are they going to do with Daisy? I think the answer is they're looking for celebrities, and they're
00:31:00eventually going to find one.
00:31:01And they'll do either something where it's just part of the team or nothing, you know, like Rosalina.
00:31:09I will say, as far as the voice casting goes, because, I mean, it's kind of getting away from me.
00:31:13The cynicism, the negativity, it's escaping.
00:31:17But so before I get there, I will say that the voices were fine. I didn't have a problem with
00:31:21Chris Pratt Mario.
00:31:22Sorry, guys. I thought I was fine.
00:31:24I actually really liked Charlie DeLuigi.
00:31:28Brie Larson was really good as Rosalina.
00:31:30I wish she had more lines.
00:31:31I have no problem with Brie Larson whatsoever.
00:31:35No, I'm not one of those YouTubers, guys.
00:31:37I thought she was great.
00:31:38I thought leading into the movie, I actually really enjoyed seeing how much she loved Mario and Galaxy.
00:31:43And like, that was like a cool thing.
00:31:44Like, oh, that's a perfect, perfect actor for Rosalina.
00:31:49You've got it right there.
00:31:50And then when I saw the movie and she was so underutilized, I was like, boy, what was the point
00:31:56of that?
00:31:57And I actually think it's funny because I think I know the point of that.
00:32:00And it's the same reason that Donald Glover was cast as Yoshi.
00:32:03I love Donald Glover.
00:32:05This is probably the lamest, most mainstream example.
00:32:11But I love Community.
00:32:12It's a very good show.
00:32:14Okay, I'm sorry.
00:32:14I know that's mainstream.
00:32:16I think he's a great actor.
00:32:18I think he's fantastic.
00:32:20He said the word Yoshi the whole film.
00:32:22Okay, I'm not going to pretend like he gave a standout performance here.
00:32:26And I think the interesting question is, why cast him as Yoshi?
00:32:30And I know that you might be saying, oh, well, yeah, they cast everybody as celebrities.
00:32:34But why cast Donald Glover as Yoshi?
00:32:37Why cast him as Yoshi?
00:32:39And the answer, in my opinion, is because they're saying to themselves, okay, we're going to have a creature that
00:32:44only says Yoshi the whole film.
00:32:46It doesn't matter who the voice is because we have enough.
00:32:49We have other voices that we're bringing on.
00:32:51And in my opinion, it comes from a place of what if we could get Donald Glover fans or people
00:32:58that like him or might like him to watch the Mario Galaxy movie to cast a wider net.
00:33:04And the way I see it, you know, Donald Glover was on the press tour for the Mario Galaxy movie.
00:33:09If you watch any, you know, promotional Jimmy Fallon podcast, you know, news, any of those things, or it's like
00:33:19Good Morning America, where it's like the stars of Mario talk about the movie.
00:33:22He's there.
00:33:23And, I mean, he should be there.
00:33:25He's a main character.
00:33:26But I think, in my opinion, that's Nintendo's point of hiring him.
00:33:30It's to get another face out there to potentially sell it to more people who might not like Chris Pratt
00:33:36or Charlie Day or who, you know, the people that didn't see the first one that weren't convinced.
00:33:39Here's new people.
00:33:40And maybe you'll be convinced to see the second one.
00:33:42I wouldn't be surprised if the third one's got a whole bunch of other well-known actors in very minor
00:33:47roles.
00:33:49As far as the actual deep lore of the movie goes, the only thing that I'd say is a mystery
00:33:53or worth theorizing about.
00:33:56Is when, in Rosalina's story about Peach as a girl, there were evil forces that wanted Peach and Rosalina's power
00:34:03for themselves.
00:34:05What does that mean?
00:34:06Who were the evil forces?
00:34:08It presumably wasn't Bowser, so could we be actually secretly hinting towards a bigger bad in the Mario universe?
00:34:13Or will this never be brought up again?
00:34:15Also worth mentioning, it's confirmed that Rosalina and Peach are literally made of stardust.
00:34:20What does that mean for them?
00:34:21Again, I kind of think nothing, really.
00:34:25Another thing I think that is worth talking about, because I know I just got done saying this,
00:34:29no, there's no development, there's no characters, there's no lore, there's no deepness, you're not supposed to think about anything.
00:34:35But I will say it definitely seemed like they were trying to make the audience think that Bowser was, you
00:34:40know, conflicted, he wanted to be a good guy.
00:34:42Like, in the beginning, when Mario turns him big again, you think that Bowser's going to immediately flip.
00:34:47But he doesn't, he actually helps them out and he genuinely makes the suggestion of becoming, you know, a worker
00:34:55in the mines for these bees, just so that Mario and Luigi can go save Rosalina.
00:34:59And it's like, okay, well, hold on.
00:35:01Maybe Bowser's kind of not totally evil.
00:35:04And then he's upset when Bowser Jr.'s, you know, trying to kill them.
00:35:07And it's like, you know, I kind of think Nintendo's doing a thing here where they're building towards Bowser being
00:35:14a friend of Mario and Luigi.
00:35:16But then they go back on that and they do a thing where Bowser's like, you know, he's angry and
00:35:21he's like, you know, you humiliate me and turn me small.
00:35:24And it's like, it was hard for me to determine as an audience member where exactly it was meant to
00:35:31be going, like, emotionally, I guess.
00:35:34Like, when you do something like that in a film, right, when you have a character potential good, potential bad,
00:35:40and you have a character like Bowser, let's just use Bowser for an example.
00:35:45You sort of show that he's got a soft side to him and he actually likes Mario and Luigi.
00:35:49And then, you know, obviously he is Bowser and you sort of show that he's battling with it internally.
00:35:54And when he's with Junior on the ship and he's like, oh, I don't want you to kill Mario and
00:35:58Luigi.
00:35:59You're sort of doing a thing where you are showing that it's conflicting and is Bowser going to turn, is
00:36:06Bowser going to go to the bad side or the good side?
00:36:08Is Bowser going to fully align with Junior or is Bowser going to instead, you know, end up saving the
00:36:14day and stopping Junior because he says, like, I've been a bad father.
00:36:19I never meant to do this.
00:36:21I never meant to make you think that friends backstab you, Junior.
00:36:26I, I, you know, you gotta, if you are mean, then there's nobody in your life.
00:36:31You know, something like that, which, I mean, I guess Nintendo's allergic to something like that because that would involve
00:36:37a character going through an arc and coming out differently at the end of the tunnel.
00:36:41But, um, I'm joking.
00:36:42But, you know, instead what they do is sort of, they have their cake and eat it too.
00:36:48They have Bowser sort of conflicted and then he fully sides with Junior, but then there's still a side of
00:36:52him that's not.
00:36:52And then at the end of the movie, Mario helps him and saves Junior's life and there's clearly, like, an
00:36:58emotional level to Bowser, but it doesn't really change anything.
00:37:03And he's still in the same spot he's in in the first movie.
00:37:04So is it worth, you know, opening Bowser up to potential, you know, sincerity with Mario and Luigi if all
00:37:12you're going to do is close it back down and say, like, yeah, you know, I guess he could like
00:37:16Mario and Luigi in some theoretical universe, but he's Bowser, so he's going to be the villain of the next
00:37:20one.
00:37:20And, like, why do that, you know?
00:37:22I actually think that just the little thing I've suggested here, um, make Bowser turn, make Bowser in the end
00:37:30of this movie decide not to kill Mario and Luigi and say, like, Junior, no.
00:37:35You know, you could have had the emotional arc.
00:37:38You have Bowser.
00:37:39I mean, I'm sorry, I sound crazy, but you've got a character who has a clear flaw.
00:37:49And you have the potential to make them go through a narrative arc in which they realize that they're wrong
00:37:55and come out better.
00:37:56I know this ties into two more of my opinions.
00:38:02I'll get to it in a minute.
00:38:04Making Rosalina and Peach Sisters destroys the Mario canon.
00:38:07No, I'm joking.
00:38:08But for real, I do think it's indicative of Rosalina not having anything to do in this movie.
00:38:13So to try and glue her back into the main plot, they add this random twist.
00:38:16I think it's also because Nintendo is allergic to expanding their franchises.
00:38:21When they have the key brand icons locked in, there is no going back.
00:38:24Quick, I want you to do something for me.
00:38:26Are you ready?
00:38:26Think of Super Mario Birthday Decorations.
00:38:30Did you think of the New Super Mario Bros. style?
00:38:32Of that one Monty Mole render on, like, a happy birthday sign?
00:38:36Of Bowser with his arms crossed?
00:38:38That's what I'm talking about.
00:38:40Mario games will only ever have Bowser as the main villain.
00:38:43The plot will only ever revolve around rescuing Peach, and it will go on like that forever and ever.
00:38:48This is, in my opinion, an example of that.
00:38:51You can't have some random, unknown character showing up and being all-important.
00:38:55Rosalina needs to be tied to Peach in the eyes of Nintendo.
00:38:59Somehow make them related so that she feels more like an extension of Princess Peach than her own character.
00:39:04This is sort of bleeding into my own thoughts on the film, so I don't think I need to hide
00:39:08it anymore.
00:39:09I was not the biggest fan of this film.
00:39:11The thing is, it wasn't as insulting as people are claiming.
00:39:14It's just not really a movie.
00:39:17When the first FNAF came out, the FNAF movie, I should say,
00:39:20I specifically criticized the way that fans just watch to see things they like on the screen.
00:39:24No nuance, no interesting takes on the source material, just things they know.
00:39:28They want to see it presented.
00:39:31I said specifically they want, basically, visual encyclopedias.
00:39:34That is very much still true, and to an extent, I think this movie checks that box.
00:39:39Warp, Birdo, Mr. Game & Watch, Rob the Robot, Fox McCloud, Bowser Jr., Mega Legs,
00:39:45and then they all jump and fly and fight like action figures.
00:39:48The obvious problem that everyone has said already is that there's no story.
00:39:53This is, in my opinion, a Pandora's Box-like statement,
00:39:56as I think it goes so much deeper than a statement as simple as,
00:40:01it needs a better story.
00:40:03So, let's finally talk about this, okay?
00:40:05You've seen the Rotten Tomatoes scores.
00:40:06They're very bad.
00:40:08Is the Mario movie bad?
00:40:09Is the Mario Galaxy movie bad?
00:40:11What is the problem, and what does it mean to have a bad story?
00:40:15I think that there are two central problems that go hand in hand.
00:40:18Okay, first of all, by the way, to answer your question,
00:40:20yeah, the Mario movie's bad.
00:40:21The Mario Galaxy movie is also bad.
00:40:23And the reason I say the word bad is because I'm not the kind of person
00:40:26to say, like, oh, it's okay.
00:40:28Oh, that's okay.
00:40:29I feel firmly.
00:40:32I'm sorry about that, but I feel firmly.
00:40:36And as much as I didn't hate the Mario Galaxy movie,
00:40:39I wouldn't tell anyone with a straight face it was a good movie.
00:40:45Here's the thing.
00:40:46There are two words that are used very frequently,
00:40:49one of which is obviously story,
00:40:50and the other of which is pacing.
00:40:52To talk about pacing very quickly,
00:40:54I think that the biggest problem with the first Mario movie
00:40:58was probably the pacing.
00:41:00And I think pacing is a bad word to use
00:41:02because nobody really knows what they're talking about.
00:41:04I saw someone say, right before the movie came out,
00:41:07like, it was a review of Galaxy.
00:41:08This was, like, yesterday.
00:41:09One of the reviewers said, like,
00:41:10oh, you know, this was breakneck speed.
00:41:13Things just happened so fast,
00:41:15and nobody was properly introduced.
00:41:18And, you know, we never have time to emotionally sit with any B,
00:41:21and there was no underlying narrative
00:41:24that tied these things together.
00:41:26Things just kept happening.
00:41:27And one of the comments was from, like,
00:41:29Super Mario Evan, number one Mario fan 11,
00:41:33who said, like,
00:41:34so is the pacing bad this time, do you think, or no?
00:41:37And it's like, I'm sorry, but...
00:41:39People are using the term pacing
00:41:42without really understanding.
00:41:44They're seeing that the common trend is,
00:41:46you know, in fandom Twitter, in Mario fandom,
00:41:49oh, the pacing of the Mario movie was bad.
00:41:52And in my opinion, I think the problem
00:41:55is the word pacing itself.
00:41:58I think a better word for pacing
00:42:00because pacing implies speed,
00:42:02how fast things are happening.
00:42:03But I don't think that that is a valid way
00:42:07to judge the pacing of a movie.
00:42:10Like, I can think of movies
00:42:11with lots of things happening very fast, you know.
00:42:13I could describe movies
00:42:15that feel slow and feel fast,
00:42:17and I could make them feel the opposite way.
00:42:19By the way, I describe the plot.
00:42:21Like, you know,
00:42:23I'm trying to think of an example
00:42:24off the top of my head.
00:42:24I'm never good at that.
00:42:25I'm never good at that.
00:42:27I think you could take a movie
00:42:28like Bullet Train,
00:42:30and you could say,
00:42:31Bullet Train has this happened,
00:42:34and this happened, and this happened,
00:42:35and this happened, and this happened,
00:42:36therefore it's bad pacing.
00:42:37But I think the pacing is fine
00:42:39because I think that you have time
00:42:40to sit with everything.
00:42:41There is no thing has to happen.
00:42:45You barely introduce anything
00:42:46before it happens.
00:42:47You have time to sit with everything,
00:42:49and that's why I love that movie so much.

00:43:33and Peach says,
00:43:35What?
00:43:36You're a human?
00:43:37Oh my gosh.
00:43:38Where did you come from?
00:43:39And Mario says,
00:43:40Me and my brother
00:43:40came from Brooklyn,
00:43:42and then I fell in this pipe,
00:43:43and he's in the pipe,
00:43:44and he's in the Darklands
00:43:48or whatever,
00:43:48and Peach goes,
00:43:50Oh my,
00:43:50if he's in the Darklands,
00:43:51it might already be too late.
00:43:52Bowser's going to kill him.
00:43:53And Mario goes,
00:43:55What?
00:43:55How can we stop him?
00:43:56And Peach says,
00:43:56Let's go see what you've got,
00:43:58and then takes him
00:43:58to the obstacle course.
00:43:59And it's like,

00:44:01These are two characters
00:44:02meeting for the first time.
00:44:04You need to have Mario
00:44:07introduce himself.

00:44:10The third thing Peach says is,

00:44:13Let's go to the obstacle course.
00:44:15Who are these characters
00:44:17to each other?
00:44:17You know what I mean?
00:44:20I think that the problem
00:44:22is digestion.
00:44:24I'm going to use

00:44:27We have to establish
00:44:29two assassins,
00:44:30and we have to establish
00:44:31how they're different
00:44:32from each other,
00:44:33what their personalities are,

00:44:37a few minutes of each other,
00:44:38of itself,
00:44:39we get a scene
00:44:40where we see
00:44:41them argue
00:44:42about how many kills
00:44:45they got
00:44:45on their last
00:44:46assassination mission.
00:44:47and
00:44:49it's funny
00:44:50because you see
00:44:51their personalities
00:44:51in the argument
00:44:52and then they cut back
00:44:53to show you
00:44:55what the actual truth was
00:44:57as they go
00:44:57through the assassination mission
00:44:59and they show
00:45:00how many people
00:45:00they killed.
00:45:01And then we cut back
00:45:02and we then see
00:45:04that the one assassin
00:45:05is a big fan
00:45:06of Thomas the Tank Engine
00:45:07and uses
00:45:08Thomas the Tank Engine
00:45:09stickers to describe people.
00:45:10And it's just
00:45:11like this is not
00:45:13anything crazy.
00:45:14I'm not saying like
00:45:15listen how good this is.

00:45:18they had two characters
00:45:18and in order to make them
00:45:19unique and interesting

00:45:21the other characters

00:48:32he's a villain in society
00:48:33and he freezes people
00:48:34to get ahead
00:48:35on the coffee shop line
00:48:36and that's enjoyable
00:48:37to watch
00:48:37as someone who
00:48:38will never do that
00:48:39you know
00:48:40you're not going to do that
00:48:41and it's enjoyable
00:48:42to see him do these things
00:48:43that you kind of wish
00:48:44you could do
00:48:44and so
00:48:45that's fun
00:48:46and then you see
00:48:47the three girls
00:48:49who are you know
00:48:49they're orphans
00:48:51and they're sort of
00:48:52really badly mistreated
00:48:53in their adoption home
00:48:54and you sort of
00:48:55feel very bad for them
00:48:56so when they go to Gru
00:48:57and Gru starts to like
00:48:59destroy the world
00:49:01for them
00:49:02that's extremely satisfying
00:49:04with the scene
00:49:05where Gru wins
00:49:06what's her name
00:49:07the doll
00:49:07the unicorn
00:49:09because he
00:49:11destroys the carnival game
00:49:12that the guy was like
00:49:13being a jerk with
00:49:14like that's really
00:49:15satisfying to watch
00:49:16and it's also fun to see
00:49:17Gru talk with the girls
00:49:19because those characters
00:49:20you know
00:49:21bounce off each other
00:49:21really well
00:49:23and on top of the characters
00:49:25there's also a good
00:49:26story as a whole
00:49:28there's also
00:49:28you know
00:49:29like the plot
00:49:30is very interesting
00:49:31Gru wants to steal the moon
00:49:32and you see
00:49:33through the plot
00:49:34who Gru is
00:49:35you see as
00:49:35when he
00:49:35you know
00:49:36when the bank
00:49:37chooses not to fund him
00:49:38and instead gives the money
00:49:39to Vector
00:49:39you could see that he
00:49:40he sort of still
00:49:42powers through
00:49:43with the help
00:49:43from the minions
00:49:44and like
00:49:44you get a full sense
00:49:46of who Gru is
00:49:47as a character
00:49:47and then you watch
00:49:48his arc
00:49:49you watch that change
00:49:50go through
00:49:51you watch him become
00:49:52a better person
00:49:53and like a father
00:49:54through the course
00:49:56of Despicable Me
00:49:56and whatever you think
00:49:57about it
00:49:58being probably like
00:49:59oh it's a stupid movie
00:50:00it's really good
00:50:01for that reason
00:50:02the Mario movie
00:50:04doesn't have any of that
00:50:05and I think that
00:50:06the biggest thing
00:50:07that upsets me
00:50:08is that it doesn't
00:50:09even need all of it
00:50:10it just needs one

00:50:45The Amazing World of Gumball
00:50:46is not something
00:50:46that I would ever be embarrassed
00:50:47about finding enjoyable
00:50:49as an adult
00:50:50if I saw a YouTube short
00:50:51of a clip from Gumball
00:50:52and said
00:50:52oh that's super funny
00:50:53I'd never feel like
00:50:54oh that's stupid
00:50:54here I am watching
00:50:55a stupid kid show
00:50:56because
00:50:58it doesn't matter
00:50:59if it's intended
00:51:00for kids or not
00:51:01what matters
00:51:01is if it's good
00:51:03you know
00:51:03and so
00:51:05with something like Gumball
00:51:06okay there's
00:51:07there's a good example
00:51:07of you know
00:51:08maybe every episode
00:51:09doesn't have like
00:51:09some kind of central arc
00:51:10or a theme
00:51:11or a great story
00:51:12but the character interactions
00:51:13alone are enough
00:51:14to make it enjoyable
00:51:15the Mario movie
00:51:15does not have that
00:51:16there is no
00:51:17really enjoyable
00:51:18character interactions
00:51:19everybody's generally
00:51:20positive and pleasant
00:51:21Jack Black is the closest

00:51:58in the Sonic movies
00:51:59go through a central arc
00:52:01they change
00:52:01and the Mario movie
00:52:04the characters in Mario
00:52:05do not
00:52:06and I think that
00:52:07this is one of the
00:52:08biggest missteps
00:52:09when like critiquing
00:52:11these films
00:52:11because yes
00:52:12it is true
00:52:13that typically
00:52:15if you're writing a film
00:52:16you would be advised
00:52:17to make your main character
00:52:18go through a sort of
00:52:19central arc

00:52:20from A to B

00:52:53who lost his partner
00:52:55years ago
00:52:55doesn't trust anyone
00:52:56and he has to learn
00:52:57to trust again
00:52:58there's A to B
00:52:59there you go
00:52:59stuff like that
00:53:01every kid's movie
00:53:02typically has it
00:53:03you know
00:53:04Gru goes from
00:53:05being you know
00:53:06a selfish villain
00:53:08to a good father
00:53:09even though he keeps
00:53:10that villainous attitude
00:53:11and
00:53:12that's what most
00:53:13of these movies have
00:53:14and that's
00:53:15fair
00:53:16the problem is
00:53:17that you have to
00:53:18have a character
00:53:19with a flaw then
00:53:20and you'd have to
00:53:20potentially bounce
00:53:21that flaw
00:53:22off of the villain
00:53:24where
00:53:24or another mentor
00:53:26character
00:53:26who sees the
00:53:27right way to go
00:53:29about it
00:53:29and so
00:53:30it all has to be
00:53:31based around
00:53:32some central flaw
00:53:33of your main character
00:53:34and the problem here
00:53:35is that
00:53:36you would never
00:53:37catch Nintendo
00:53:38dead
00:53:39giving Mario
00:53:41a flaw
00:53:41there will never
00:53:43be a flaw
00:53:43that they would say
00:53:44yeah Mario
00:53:44you know what
00:53:45he's greedy
00:53:46or he's not brave
00:53:48Mario
00:53:49is the Mickey Mouse
00:53:51of video games
00:53:52Mickey Mouse
00:53:53has no flaws
00:53:53he's not
00:53:55he can be mischievous
00:53:56sometimes
00:53:57but that's not a flaw
00:53:58that's played
00:53:59for comedy
00:53:59typically
00:54:00in the same way
00:54:01Mario
00:54:01never has a flaw
00:54:03Mario never has
00:54:04to get over
00:54:04anything
00:54:05I think that
00:54:05one of the reasons

00:54:07the ending

00:54:08Luigi's Mansion
00:54:09despite the fact
00:54:09that it's very
00:54:10very simple

00:54:11Luigi cries

00:54:17is very clearly
00:54:17difficult for him
00:54:18because he's scared
00:54:19and as simple
00:54:20as that is
00:54:21as a story

00:54:23story or anything

00:54:26whereas Mario

00:54:28had to struggle
00:54:29with anything

00:54:36that he was enough
00:54:39that's like the only

00:54:43to be brave
00:54:44and Mario
00:54:44had to learn
00:54:45that his attitude

00:54:54that's like saying

00:54:55was learning

00:55:33change by the end

01:00:49and how Rosalina

01:00:52and blah blah blah
01:00:53it's like 11 pages
01:00:54or it's like a billion pages
01:00:57the problem with
01:00:58adapting either
01:00:58of these things
01:00:59is that I don't think
01:00:59they'd work
01:01:00for the film

01:01:02that the rebirth
01:01:03of the universe
01:01:03makes any sense
01:01:04for this film
01:01:05for a kid's film

01:01:07has to lead into
01:01:08a potential sequel
