00:06At the edge of the Corbett Tiger Reserve, a policy-driven change in tourism practice
00:11is linking environmental protection with rural livelihoods. In the fatter zone of the Terai
00:17Western Forest Division, tourists are now required to carry jute bags as garbage carriers,
00:22replacing plastic inside the forest area. These jute bags are being produced by women
00:30from the Shiv Self-Help Group in the Maldhan area near Ramnagar, creating a steady source of
00:36income through ecotourism. It is helping us earn with respect and leading to our growth. Along
00:45with household work, we stitch jute bags and it is helping us become financially independent.
00:50The Forest Department introduced jute bags as a mandatory alternative, ensuring tourists
00:56follow waste norms while also generating local employment.
01:02Explaining the objective behind this move, the Forest Department says,
01:08This initiative promotes environmental protection by reducing plastic use while also increasing
01:15local participation and creating livelihood opportunities for women.
01:18For the women involved, the change has brought income as well as independence. It has also
01:25changed social norms within households.
01:29Tourists used to bring polythene, which was harmful. Now they take the jute bags we make. Earlier we were
01:35not allowed to work outside, but now we have work at home. It has benefited us.
01:40Over the past three years, the women's group has earned around Rs 24 lakh reflecting the scale of this home
01:48-based work linked to tourism.
01:51What began as a waste control measure has now evolved into a model where conservation and livelihood go hand in
01:58hand.
02:01In Ramnagar, this approach is not just reducing plastic inside forest areas, it is also strengthening the role of women
02:08in the local economy.
