00:00What if a modern person woke up during the gold rush?
00:03Day 1
00:04You open your eyes in California, 1849, mud everywhere, hundreds of men kneeling in the same river, washing dirt in
00:12metal pans.
00:13Everyone is chasing gold, but you have something they don't, 21st century knowledge.
00:18Instead of digging, you start watching, and you notice something the miners ignore.
00:23They wash dirt with their bare hands.
00:25So you build something simple, a wooden sluice box.
00:28Water flows through it, heavy gold sinks to the bottom, and the dirt keeps moving.
00:32Suddenly, your box finds more gold than 10 men with pans.
00:35The miners stare.
00:37Day 2
00:37You stop mining completely, instead you start renting the box, $1 per day.
00:42Before sunrise, miners are already lining up to use it.
00:45By evening, your pockets are heavier than theirs.
00:47Day 3
00:48You build 10 more boxes.
00:50The sound of the camp changes, no more desperate digging, just water rushing and wooden machines rattling along the river.
00:56Gold keeps appearing, but not in the miners' pockets, in yours.
01:01Day 5
01:01Rumors spread across the valley.
01:04Prospectors arrive from other rivers bringing silver, tools, and money.
01:08That's when you stop renting the machines and start selling them.
01:11A few weeks later, the entire riverbank is filled with your sluice boxes.
01:16Hundreds of miners are working your invention.
01:18Most of them will still leave the gold rush poor.
01:20But you won't.
01:21Because during the gold rush, the smartest man isn't the one digging for gold.
01:26It's the one selling the shovel.
