00:10Hey guys we just got back from the Super Mario Galaxy movie in its quest to make a billion
00:20dollars. This is three years later after the first film. Still not wrong about it. We famously
00:30got reamed by our fans and the internet for being not kind to the film. We gave it a 5
00:37out of 10 if I remember right. I think y'all might have given it less than me. And we're
00:43back with the same directorial team, the same writer, Matthew Fogel. But a new story. We go to the galaxy.
00:53We use a lot of new characters and the stars, the star kids who are
00:59freaking adorable. And I gotta say I actually enjoyed this film's characters better. Its pacing was at least initially a
01:14little bit better. And then everything kind of falls apart back to the insane mile a minute pace of the
01:25previous one.
01:26where nothing feels explored. Deb, things are just kind of thrown on the screen. And honestly it started to feel
01:33as if I was watching an 8 episode, you know, Disney Plus series. Just jammed packed within a, you know,
01:43hour and some minute run time.
01:46And it's a 98 minute run time. This movie is jam packed. It is cluttered. There are tons of character
01:55cameos. And yeah, Nintendo is basically throwing everything at the screen.
02:02And I will say visually, it's really awesome. I think the animators are doing their job at the best possible
02:11level. You can see the charm, the smiles, the, the, even the acting in the character's eyes as they go
02:19from sad to filled with hope to, um, you know, action scenes are cool and awesome.
02:27And everything seems to be working, um, at surface level. But I just wish that the, the, the story, the
02:37jokes and the characterization was there to support it. And I get that this is, I don't know, you know,
02:43I feel like, is this a universal pictures thing? Is this an illumination thing?
02:49But honestly, when I watch the illumination, you know, the little minions, uh, films, I laugh, I laugh a lot.
02:59And in this film, it only made me laugh once. It made me and Joel laugh once at the end.
03:05And I just wish that there was more emotion going on. And so it's much like the first film. It
03:13goes a mile a minute. It's just like, Hey, here's this next. Here's the thing. Hey, do you remember this?
03:17Hey, do you remember that? Hey, do you remember this?
03:19And I was like, damn it. After such a great start where they were taking their time with the characters,
03:25essentially Yoshi is introduced here and he has nothing to do.
03:30We just, we just go on. He was the tease in the first film. So I thought, Oh, he's going
03:35to New York. We're going to get this.
03:37We're going to get some cool shit with Yoshi, his story, his backstory. Nada, none of that. In fact, I
03:43don't even think they write, well, they write Yoshi one time.
03:46And, you know, I just felt if you're a Yoshi fan, yes, he's cute. Yes, he's got an adorable voice,
03:51but he just thrown in here. He's one of the pack.
03:54And then, I don't know if I should spoil it, but there's a, there's a, it seems as if Nintendo
04:01is just throwing every single character they have into these films.
04:04So there's crossovers with a bunch of other characters. Um, and you know, it's cool to see them, but it's
04:12like, yeah, but I'd rather you take him serious.
04:14Or I'd rather him get his own spinoff film. Let me just say it. Star Fox. Okay. Star Fox is
04:20in the film and he plays a part barely in the film.
04:25Donkey Kong, not here. Uh, it's as if he never even existed. Not here. He didn't even do anything once.
04:31Guess, guess you didn't. Uh, I guess they didn't want to pay, uh, you know, for the voice actor for,
04:36for him.
04:36Um, and, uh, it took 40 minutes for Jack Black to show up as, uh, Bowser. I was interested in
04:44what they were going to do with Bowser here.
04:46And then, again, drop that plot line completely right back to, you know, uh, standard fare. And, uh, yeah.
04:55And so, unfortunately, as much as I wanted to come out and say, because in our first review, I was
05:00like, maybe the sequel's gonna be better.
05:02Maybe the sequel is gonna be a little different. They're gonna focus on the characters. While they do a little
05:07bit, I actually like the characters here more.
05:11I like the characters. I like the cute little, uh, stars. These little adorable children. Um, and I'm happy that
05:21the Mario brothers get to spend more time together.
05:23Uh, Luigi and Mario. But ultimately, it still doesn't feel like a satisfying story.
05:30It feels like member buries the movie at a thousand miles a minute. And maybe this is just what works
05:37these days.
05:38I mean, we've seen this kind of pacing and a little bit in Superman. We've seen it a little bit
05:42in Minecraft the movie.
05:44And, of course, in the first Mario film. That one made a lot of money.
05:47And these things are making money. So, I don't know. That's my initial opinion on a Super Mario Galaxy movie.
05:56So, if you want to downvote us up front again for being those crabby critics that, you know, are fucking
06:01idiots and don't retards and don't know what they're saying or doing, go ahead.
06:05Yeah, and there's that excuse it's not meant for you. It's like, yeah, it can be, though.
06:08Like, because they're, like, the parents have to go watch the movie. It's like, hey, this is a good message.
06:12This is a feel-good.
06:13It's a feel-good for everyone.
06:15But this, again, was not, like you said, a mile a minute.
06:18The plots that I did want to focus on, they dropped it real quick.
06:22And to reiterate what you said, I wanted some more of the Yoshi stuff because they teased in the first
06:28one.
06:28I was like, okay, it would be pretty cool.
06:29And they're like, oh, well, he's here and he's part of the gang.
06:32Like, we've known him.
06:34But I didn't get to spend that much time.
06:36And you don't really get to spend that much time with the characters, so you don't really feel for them
06:39a lot.
06:40And, again, it has no, like, heart like the first one.
06:45It's just, like, moving to point A to point B just because we need to throw out some jokes.
06:52A lot of them didn't work.
06:53There was a couple of good ones.
06:54I did like Star Fox stuff, but it was pretty short.
06:58Yeah.
06:59And it's just Star Fox who doesn't bring his cast of lovable characters with him.
07:04Yeah.
07:04And then Bowser, his situation was kind of dealt with pretty quick.
07:09I thought they were going to linger on that a little bit more because he does kind of feel bad.
07:14But then he's like, meh, it's fine.
07:16He seems like he's a rehabilitated Bowser kind of thing.
07:19Yeah.
07:20But then they dropped this plot line pretty quick.
07:21And, again, they dropped so many things that I was kind of interested in.
07:24And then they just, like, start jam-packing things.
07:27And there's, like, just so you could be like, oh, look, shiny thing, shiny thing.
07:30The world doesn't feel real to me.
07:33You know what I mean?
07:34Like, I try to get into the world and universe here.
07:36You know, Sega with Sonic, it feels real.
07:40It feels like, oh, this shit makes sense.
07:43Okay, Robotnik makes interesting things.
07:46Yeah.
07:46And these things are based in somewhat reality.
07:48I know it's crazy to say that, right?
07:51But then here it's just like, you press this and then you get this power and then you're,
07:55and then it's like, I get it from the video games and a lot of it is.
07:58But I want these things set up individually on the mom and then have that epic moment of triumph.
08:06But if you're just throwing 17 things out there at once, it's like at any moment anything can happen and
08:12it just doesn't feel grounded.
08:16I did, like, obviously the animation is spot on.
08:20It's fucking 11 out of 10.
08:23Yes.
08:24So it just looks fucking great.
08:27I still like the cast, obviously, except for Chris, but whatever.
08:32Donald Glover did a good job.
08:34You're not used to Chris Pratt at this point as Mario?
08:37I think he does it fine.
08:39Wahoo!
08:39But everything else kind of, yeah, yeah.
08:42Yeah, it's just Chris Pratt, but everything is still good.
08:45But, again, the story was very paper thin.
08:49I can't even tell Keegan-Michael Kaye is, I can't even tell his voice there.
08:53They altered pretty hard.
08:54They definitely altered his voice.
08:55Yeah, I like how they switched to the pixel art and the CGI.
09:00Pretty cool.
09:02There is definitely some different animation style here.
09:05They do some paper mache stuff.
09:07They do the video game stuff.
09:09They do the illumination animation.
09:12All this shit is running 10 out of 10 for me, right?
09:15And then the way the characters look, the animation, the music.
09:21Music, I just wish the writing and the directing and the focus would be there.
09:26Yeah, because, again, I didn't feel for Bowser Jr. or Bowser and their sad moments they were
09:34supposed to share.
09:35And I'm like, it feels off.
09:39Something feels off.
09:40Yeah.
09:40So it has to be the writing or storytelling.
09:43Well, I loved it.
09:44And 10 out of 10, no notes.
09:47No, my expectations were lower.
09:48The first one I didn't think was very good, and people didn't like it.
09:51How dare you?
09:52The first one has a 95% audience.
09:55Yeah, so does a kid's Happy Meal.
09:57But when you're a parent and you buy your kid a Happy Meal, you know you're not feeding
10:01them something good.
10:02You're feeding them something that will distract them.
10:03It's got a toy in it.
10:04And it makes them happy and quiet for a short period of time.
10:07But you know it's not good.
10:09You know it isn't good.
10:10And that's what this is.
10:11This is a Happy Meal that will make a billion dollars.
10:13It's not a good story.
10:15It is gorgeous.
10:16Because Illumination is super good at what they do.
10:18Yes, they are.
10:19But the story isn't any...
10:20We watch some of these movies.
10:22You go back and you watch the Shrek movie that came out the same year as the Mario movie.
10:26Great.
10:26The Last Wish.
10:27You feel stuff for these characters.
10:30And kids can enjoy that.
10:31And parents can enjoy that.
10:32That is a good kids movie.
10:34Or...
10:34Didn't make as much money.
10:36It was a failure.
10:37Well, it made some money.
10:39But Shrek 1 is the one that they always look back.
10:42That one everyone can enjoy.
10:44But writing is hard.
10:45And so instead of doing writing and emotion and dialogue, we got multiple non-stop rapid-fire soulless IP milking
10:54where they go from place to place to place in 10-second little bursts.
10:58And you're like, oh, I recognize that.
11:00I recognize that.
11:01I've heard this music before.
11:04And it's a huge portion of this movie.
11:05It's just going from scene to scene to scene because there's nothing in this movie.
11:09But look at the thing!
11:10I know.
11:10It's great for kids.
11:11If you're one of those people that have to have, like, jingle keys in front of your kids, park them
11:15in front of this and they're going to be...
11:16Oh, you are good.
11:17This is a great kids film.
11:19But also, I've seen great kids films that have a good emotional pinning and undertone and story.
11:27This will be a successful kids film because I think you're successful that the kids will watch it.
11:31The kids will pay to go see it.
11:33But I just don't think that this is going to be one that they're going to look back on the
11:36way that we can look back on some of the kids' movies that we've seen recently and long, long, long,
11:41long, long time ago.
11:42Where you're like, this is a great movie and this is something that I'd want to show to someone else.
11:47This is something you watch one time.
11:48And anytime you watch beyond this, you're suffering through because your kid wants to watch it over and over and
11:52over again.
11:53I'm so happy that I looked it up.
11:54Puss in Boots, The Last Wish was not a flop.
11:56Oh, thank God.
11:57Because, you know, people were ragging on that film because it didn't make all the money in the universe, even
12:01though it was a great film.
12:02It did $480 million worldwide on a $90 million budget.
12:06Yeah.
12:06I mean, and then a film like Super Mario Bros. does more than double, probably triple that because I think
12:11it's at $1.3 billion going to $1.4 billion.
12:16I don't think that this...
12:17Actually, I actually don't think this film is going to do as well as the first film.
12:22Which is weird because I actually think this one is slightly better than the first one.
12:25Yeah.
12:25So, I think it's still going to make a billion.
12:27It probably won't make $1.4 billion.
12:29I think it'll probably just pass a billion and that'll be kind of where it is.
12:33But, yeah, I was expecting a better villain.
12:41Didn't get it.
12:42You know, where's my man...
12:45Well, no, I mean, y'all already know this.
12:48You know, Waluigi, Wario.
12:50I guess they're saving that stuff for a third film because all this stuff could definitely...
12:56I mean, if you're making a billion off each film, we're going to get there eventually.
13:00It's just sad to see this particular franchise treated as a soup.
13:06Just throw everything in there.
13:08Put it all on the screen.
13:09We don't have moments of reflection.
13:12We don't have emotional moments.
13:14We don't have great backstory.
13:16Now, this is the first time in history where they're kind of addressing Peach's origin.
13:20The first film kind of did that.
13:21That was interesting.
13:22So, they expand that a little bit here.
13:25But not as much as you're hoping.
13:27And it just, again, it doesn't have the emotional resonance as it should as you're setting it up.
13:34And it's just visually a freaking treat, but it doesn't have the substance behind it.
13:43It's cotton candy.
13:44And cotton candy is great for kids.
13:47But if you're eating too much cotton candy, eventually you're going to throw up.
13:53And I just want it to be something a little bit better.
13:56And it's a shame because, like I said, the animation and the talent, and I'm good.
14:02I'm on board with everything here.
14:04I just wish that they took some more time with the story or have some ambition to tell something interesting
14:13outside of,
14:15let's try to hit every single fucking thing that we have ever put into the video games.
14:21And let's bring in fucking, what is that video, Clock and Watch?
14:25You know, one of the first little Nintendo things I've got.
14:29We got to give him his moment.
14:31We got to give the Pikmin their moment.
14:33We got to do this as like, do you though?
14:35Do you?
14:35This is Mario's world.
14:37Why don't we focus on Mario?
14:39Do we have to cross over, you know, Star Fox?
14:42Is the Star Fox universe in the same universe as Mario?
14:45Apparently, yes.
14:46Well, no.
14:47It's a different universe.
14:48He's stranded, Joe.
14:49Okay, fine.
14:51He's stranded.
14:52All right.
14:53That's a cool dude.
14:54He is.
14:55I hope he gets a spinoff.
14:57That's Glenn Powell.
14:58Clearly, they got him fresh off that, you know, Top Gun because they wanted him.
15:03Running Man.
15:05Not fresh off his Running Man success.
15:08It's more like his Running Man failure.
15:10But now that he's in this, another box office hit for Glenn.
15:15Good.
15:15Our boy from the same, from our school.
15:19All right.
15:20Honestly, I forgot what I gave the first one, but I think it's, was it four or five?
15:26I don't remember.
15:29But this one, I would say it's still the same.
15:35Whether it was four or five, I don't remember what I gave the first one, but I think it's
15:39the same.
15:39Don't worry about it.
15:40Just focus on this one.
15:42It's the same thing.
15:43Everything.
15:45I liked the visuals, but it had no depth.
15:49Like, I wanted an amazing climax or something to happen to make me feel good.
15:55But then all of a sudden, like, we didn't have our lows where our heroes are, like, stranded
16:01and then they're at their lowest to try to reflect on what's going on.
16:05We didn't have any moments like that to, like, kind of latch onto a character, see their world through their
16:13eyes or whatnot.
16:14Everything was just funny moment, funny moment, funny moment.
16:18But there was a very funny.
16:19But, yeah, also not funny.
16:21Yeah, it wasn't funny, so it's like, we're stranded here, it's like, we're at our lowest, but it didn't seem
16:26like that.
16:26They're just, like, kind of babies, just goofing off.
16:29Some of it was kind of annoying sometimes.
16:33But, yeah, four for me.
16:37Four.
16:38Yeah.
16:40It's a shame because there's parts where I'm watching this and it's like, wow, this is so cool looking.
16:45And I just was so disappointed while watching these scenes.
16:47It's like, what I'm seeing is gorgeous, but what they're writing in the scene is just not there.
16:53Everything is muted.
16:54Like you said, there's no lows in this film.
16:56Like, everything is brought up to the middle.
16:58And there are no highs in this film.
16:59Everything's dragged back down.
17:00So there's no elation.
17:02There's no sorrow.
17:04There's no heartbreak.
17:05There's no anything where you, and there's a story here where you would feel heartbreak because something happens to characters.
17:11And then you would feel so happy that they get back together and all this stuff happens.
17:14None of that is here.
17:15Like, absolutely none of that.
17:18Sometimes you watch these movies and you're like, oh, man, I'm thinking about getting choked up.
17:21Nothing.
17:22Absolutely nothing.
17:23The kids behind us when they were talking in the film, there was no laughter.
17:26They were not laughing at this movie.
17:28And we see kids' movies frequently where everyone is busting up and having a great time.
17:32Nothing.
17:33So it's like, I don't think they did a good job with this movie.
17:36And I think that if you take your kids to have it, you're going to have a successful outing.
17:39They're going to be happy and quiet.
17:41But you're going to know that this isn't a good movie on its own.
17:44If you're judging this movie based on what the movie put out, which is what I'm trying to do, it's
17:48not good.
17:49It's a – they're squeezing every penny they can out of the IP by showing you as much things on
17:55the screen as they possibly can.
17:56I do think it's better than the last one.
17:59I think I give the last one a three.
18:01So I think the last one is a bad movie.
18:03And I don't think – this one is –
18:05I wouldn't rewatch it.
18:06Yeah.
18:07And I wouldn't rewatch this one either.
18:08And I think this one is slightly better.
18:10So I'm going to say this is a four instead.
18:11I do think it's a below average.
18:13I have more fun watching the Minions movies.
18:16There's more at least silliness and wackiness going on where I can have a good time.
18:19Look, we can be silly.
18:21We can understand.
18:22So as long as it's funny, so as long as it works, that's just not doing it.
18:26I'm not sure – the Minions and Monsters trailer was funnier than the entire Mario movie.
18:30I love the Minions and Monsters.
18:32I'm actually excited for that film.
18:34It's a dumb fucking presence, but I'm like –
18:35I'm happy to hear you say that.
18:36I'm going to watch all this shit.
18:38We're going to Minions and Monsters.
18:40Yeah.
18:40Well, that movie is going to chop the legs off of Supergirl.
18:44Oh, I know.
18:45Yeah, because it comes out in June.
18:46It's like four days after, I think.
18:48So –
18:50But yeah.
18:50So below average.
18:52But, you know, you're not surprised from that movie.
18:54Yeah.
18:55Unfortunately, this time I have to agree with critics.
18:58There's some critics here.
18:59Let's see.
18:59Danahan Klein from – we're watching that.
19:02All side quests, no substance.
19:04While filled to the brim with references and Easter eggs, the sequel is somehow even more
19:07anemic on the plot front.
19:10Alas, a textbook case of preying on your nostalgia instead of bothering to nourish the intelligence
19:15of the fan base.
19:16That's well put.
19:17I mean, that's perfectly put.
19:19That's what I'm trying to say, is that you can do both.
19:23And it seems like Nintendo Illumination – Nintendo probably didn't have anything to do with
19:27it.
19:27It's Illumination.
19:28It's Matthew Fogle.
19:30It's the director team of these two gentlemen, Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, that don't
19:41seem to care about that part of it.
19:43So as long as they get as many references in, this is what the fans want.
19:47And honestly, he's right.
19:50It made $1.4 billion.
19:54It had a 95% audience score.
19:57But if you're a movie critic, you're going to disagree.
19:59If you've seen a thousand animated films, you're going to disagree.
20:04You're going to have – you're going to be like, yeah, that's a good one, but how
20:07about this one, huh?
20:08And this one isn't one of the ones that you point to.
20:11It's fine for younger audiences, but it's going to leave adult viewers, even teenage viewers,
20:16the people who grew up with these licenses, wanting for more and wondering what exactly
20:24the point was.
20:25If the point was to get as many things in there as possible and for it to be a visual
20:29splendor, you got it.
20:30But I just wanted more.
20:32You can be successful and popular and not good.
20:35You just have to look at the Kardashians and, like I said, the Happy Meal and stuff
20:37like that.
20:38Like, hey, this is trash.
20:40Like, this is not good.
20:41But it's like, oh, but people like it.
20:43It's like, oh, okay, cool.
20:44I'm glad.
20:44Yeah, and people like the fucking Five Nights at Freddy's films as well.
20:49And, again, not good horror, not good video game adaptions, and just kind of, unfortunately,
20:56a disappointment.
20:58And I hate to be the fucking contrarian or the stuck-up movie critic, but we're trying
21:04to explain exactly why.
21:07If you go to the movies, you want to see a good movie, all right?
21:09You want to see a damn good movie.
21:10If we're going, I want it to be good.
21:12It's not like I don't want it to be good, but it is what it is.
21:17It comes from more that idea of let's exploit this license to maximum potential rather than
21:23let's tell this really well-thought-out story that makes you feel for all of the characters.
21:29There's the tropes in there.
21:31There's, you know, the brothers, the family, friends, but none of it hits any hard.
21:40And I think it's because when you're spending 10 minutes in each world, and within those
21:4610 minutes, you have two minutes to give Mario and Luigi his frog outfit, Mario his drill outfit.
21:52You know, you're going things a mile a minute, and it's like, okay, yeah, but where'd he
21:57get that?
21:57Why didn't he just bring it at the beginning?
21:58What, you know, where does this universe, how does this universe, okay, it doesn't matter.
22:02None of it matters.
22:02None of it matters.
22:03Honestly, none of it matters.
22:04None of it matters.
22:04Because, like, the main plot was Bowser and Bowser Jr.
22:07So I thought that we were going to get some more emotional moments and some more heartfelt
22:11scenes with them two.
22:13Yeah.
22:13Is it going?
22:13No.
22:14Yeah, it's on.
22:14Okay.
22:15Yeah, just like with those two, like, we'll get some more scenes, try to get some bond
22:18going on and see what's going on.
22:20Like, at the end, they'll learn to be better.
22:25He's like, oh, I wasn't there for him, and now he's looking for me.
22:28It's like, okay.
22:29So at the end of this film, Joe, what did the characters learn?
22:33Absolutely nothing.
22:34Not a goddamn thing.
22:36Bowser didn't learn nothing.
22:38Mario didn't learn nothing.
22:39I guess Peach learned a little bit more.
22:44About where she comes from.
22:46She remembered.
22:46Yeah.
22:47She remembered.
22:47Yeah, she remembered.
22:49But that's about Bowser and Bowser Jr.
22:51Yeah.
22:52Okay.
22:53All right.
22:53Well, anyways.
22:55All right, so that's going to be it for us.
22:57Let's go into the spoilers discussion.
22:59If you don't care about the film or if you've seen the film, you want to discuss it and see
23:04what specific things we're talking about.
23:06Okay.
23:06So.
23:21Hey, guys.
23:22Welcome to the spoilers discussion.
23:24I think, you know, I like the film more because I like more of these characters.
23:29I like Star Fox.
23:31You know, Donkey Kong's not in it.
23:33I thought Seth Rogen was a weird choice for Donkey Kong.
23:37You see him once.
23:38You see him one time.
23:39You see him.
23:40He's in Brooklyn and they're throwing barrels.
23:42He's throwing barrels at people in like a one second scene.
23:45That's the one.
23:45Yeah.
23:45He's not in it.
23:48Apparently, people were saying Wario was in the first film.
23:51No, he's not.
23:52I mean, they say when Luigi has his flashback and they're building the castle, you know,
23:58there's this blonde kid that comes over and knocks it.
24:01That's supposed to be Wario.
24:02It's like, yeah, but that could be anybody.
24:04You know, Nintendo could just, you know, say it's anybody.
24:06It's conspiracy theories.
24:07It's conspiracy theories.
24:08But, yeah.
24:10So, I really, like I said, I really like the opening of this film.
24:15It starts on this star castle with a bunch of star children and she's the mother of the stars, Rosalina.
24:23And she's got the powers of star power, galaxy, cosmic power.
24:30And Bowser Jr. shows up in a big-ass machine.
24:35And then we get our girl boss moment.
24:37It's badass.
24:38It works.
24:39It's fine.
24:39And she protects her little cute.
24:41These fucking stars are so cute.
24:43I just watched these guys all day long.
24:46Unfortunately, because she wants to, you know, they do the trophy thing where she's distracted for a second
24:51because one of her kids comes out and then she gets captured.
24:54And then the kids are like, oh, no.
24:56And then we get the title crawl.
24:59And I'm like, okay.
25:00All right.
25:00There we go.
25:01Good setup.
25:02You're building the world out.
25:04So, you know, who is this princess?
25:06She seems somehow linked to Peach with a similar look.
25:09And then we got those cute stars that we saw at the beginning.
25:13And then as it goes along, I think, you know, we get the brothers together.
25:19And the brothers are having fun.
25:20They're driving their fucking motorcycles and shit.
25:22And they're just having a great time.
25:23But I think at a certain point, it was maybe when we got to Yoshi.
25:30And they reveal, hey, you remember how we teased Yoshi last time?
25:34And he's in New York and his egg cracks.
25:36Yeah, we're not doing none of that shit.
25:38He's already part of the gang.
25:40So, get used to it.
25:41And then he, so they spend like five minutes, less than that, two minutes doing this montage
25:46of him just hanging out in New York, which was funny.
25:49But then all of a sudden, he's just, boom, he's a part of the group.
25:52And I just, I don't know.
25:54I was hoping for a little bit more with Yoshi.
25:57Yeah.
25:57And he's just not really there.
25:59Not really sure why.
26:00But he's just like, just because.
26:01Got to put some kind of tension, I guess.
26:03Yeah, just because.
26:04So, Toe's like, I don't like you.
26:05Why?
26:06Maybe it was a montage of him fucking with him or something.
26:09That would have been funny.
26:10Something else.
26:10Maybe he's the first one to get eaten by Yoshi and turned into an egg.
26:14And he's traumatized by that.
26:18So, you know, give him a reason.
26:19But there's no reason of any of this.
26:22But, yeah.
26:23So, the, I don't know.
26:26What world is this?
26:27The fucking, the Mexican world.
26:32I can say that, okay?
26:34I'm half Mexican.
26:35All right.
26:35So, there's it.
26:38He shows up and they, they unclog the thing.
26:41That's where they found Yoshi.
26:42It's like, well, what is he doing here?
26:44Because he's supposed to be in New York.
26:45Oh, well, he got scared.
26:46And the police went after him when he went into a museum.
26:54Guys, we could literally break down this plot.
26:57And you can get 10 episodes in a fucking TV series.
27:01And each one could be fucking awesome.
27:03You remember the fucking, the Super Mario Brothers Variety Hour or whatever they call it with the two brothers?
27:09That's funny.
27:10The live action one.
27:13You know.
27:14Shit.
27:15It felt a little bit like that sometimes just because it's going a fucking mile a minute.
27:22What else?
27:23They rescue Yoshi.
27:24They get back to the Mushroom Kingdom.
27:26And it's Peach's birthday.
27:28Yep.
27:29Mario gives her.
27:30Mario's in love.
27:31He's in love.
27:32There's a subplot.
27:33Yeah.
27:33Subplot with, hey, you like her?
27:35Yeah.
27:36Where does that go?
27:37It doesn't go anywhere.
27:38It's there.
27:39It's like, so the thing is.
27:40She gives him a kiss at the end.
27:41Didn't she do that in the first film?
27:42I don't know.
27:42He gives her her umbrella, but then shooting stars start showing up, and then a star crash
27:48lands, and she's like, hey, my mom got kidnapped.
27:52She said if anything ever happened to her to come find you, and thus starts the adventure.
27:57She leaves with Toad.
27:59Just Toad.
28:00Now, so that means that Rosalina has been separated from Peach forever.
28:05She never fucking checks in on her.
28:07She sees her from a distance.
28:08She was scared.
28:09She watches her from a distance.
28:10Because their powers combined is too dangerous, and people would seek out that power.
28:16Hand wave, hand wave is what they explain.
28:18Stupid.
28:20All right.
28:20When they touch hands, they have the power of the universe.
28:24Yeah.
28:27And Yoshi and Luigi are immediate best friends, and they're making fun of Mario because he's
28:33got feelings for Peach, and he doesn't want to admit it.
28:37And yeah.
28:38So, Aluma basically asks for Peach's help, and the Toads are like, no, don't help, and
28:45they don't listen.
28:47Peach goes to help immediately.
28:49She asks Toad to go with her.
28:51And I think, I guess right here is where things fall apart because it's like, okay, so it's
28:56like we got the mission.
28:57We got the mission.
28:59We set it up all nice.
29:00But then the whole fucking, it's spanned one world, another world for 10 minutes.
29:06Yeah, I hate that.
29:07You have the team, but you got to split them up.
29:08And it's like there's no fucking plan.
29:10Things just happen to them.
29:12And then they'll trip, and they'll do, and then that, the trip turns into a whole storyline.
29:16And then this, and then we, oh, we fell into another world.
29:20This world has a Tyrannosaurus Rex, and now we're running from the Tyrannosaurus Rex, and
29:25then the babies, and then the babies go in the mouth, and then this, and then, and then
29:30the Princess Peach's Castle is captured by the fucking spaceship.
29:35And then the spaceship lifts off with the Princess Peach's Castle, but then they have a fight
29:40on the fucking ship, and then the fucking, the fucking boss slams into the spaceship, which
29:46lets go of the Princess Peach's Castle, which then the Princess Peach's Castle just falls
29:50throughout the universe, and then it falls on a random world, and we don't know what this
29:54world is, but the boys fall with it, and then the boys are running from the castle, and
29:59then the castle is falling, and then we have an action scene, Prometheus style, we got, we're
30:03running from the castle, and then the castle stops, and the boys are, whew.
30:05Oh, everything's fine, but then the castle continues to fall, and then we, that is, that, that,
30:13I mean, that's everything.
30:14It's like, yeah, but are we gonna go save the princess?
30:18Are we gonna, let's focus on it, just shit is just fucking wild, and it's crazy, and I
30:24guess some people, you know, like that, but, and I like it too, but, uh, not nonstop for
30:32an hour and 30 minutes, you, you gotta have some semblance, you, you gotta have some slow
30:39down moments, you have to have some focus, and it's not focused, it's a, your ADD has
30:45ADD, and somebody gave you the magic pencil, and you're just writing the whole plot as it
30:50goes along.
30:53Cheap, pretty much.
30:54Yeah, and then they meet up at this, um, international.
30:59Yeah, this galaxy, this galaxy where there's even more, I mean, it's nonstop, because this
31:03is the place where all of the universe is combined, and all the galaxies, and so, they're
31:07like, hey, you remember that from the 80s?
31:08It's like, no one, I mean, you have to be over 40 years old to know what the fuck that
31:11is, and so you remember that, and that, and that, and that, and that, and that, and then
31:14they, Mario ends up finally meeting up with Peach, uh, they need a pilot, and so Star Fox
31:20is the only one who will take them to the dangerous place, uh, and then they go on their
31:25adventure, and Star Fox, kind of a badass, like, we gotta get the, the, the scene, I think
31:30it was Jupiter, or the asteroid belt level in Star Fox 64, and he was able to, you know,
31:35he blows up their, um, their, their big spaceship pretty easily, but then Bowser Jr. pulls out
31:43a secret weapon, the gun that turns them into babies, and it's the babies that thwart Star
31:50Fox's ship, that's where they crash land, that's where they have the, the Tyrannosaurus
31:55thing, and we're just, I mean, here's where you needed to have, well, they had, they had
32:00the jokes with the babies, but here is where they're supposed to be their lowest, this is
32:04where you need time to breathe, they're stuck here, oh, three-act structure, you know, with,
32:08with the conflict, and, exactly, or something, but no, it's like, no, we just have these
32:12babies, it's like, oh, well, Toad, take care of them, and he finds himself in some shenanigans,
32:17the Mario brothers are climbing on top of a T-Rex, and then he's playing the Mario theme
32:25song on his fucking teeth, do you remember the, you can't wake him up, the Animaniacs cartoon
32:30where the dog is constantly chasing the baby, every one of those episodes is funnier than
32:34everything that happened in this with Toad trying to chase the babies, it's member
32:38bears, the, the, the thing that turns them into babies is the fucking gun, the light
32:42gun, which I had, and I fucking loved, I also had Rob, I couldn't believe it, I wish it
32:47would have held on to Rob, I think I gave it to a Once Upon a Child store a long
32:51time
32:52ago, and resold, because those things sell for, for higher now, but the thing is, they,
32:56they take from better movies, you know what movie they took from when they did the Rob part?
33:02It's fucking Zootopia, the Sloth guy, because what is the thing with Rob?
33:06Rob, Rob goes, over here, you know, it's like, but that's exactly the joke, this is a
33:16robot, it's different than a Sloth, oh, okay, and they don't do it but once, they do it
33:22twice, but then they do it three times, and then later on, somebody else is asking where
33:28the princess went, and then he does it again, so super funny, oh, super scope, that's what
33:34I was thinking, um, anyways, um, yeah, we're flying through the galaxy, and, uh, at one
33:45point, hold on, I, I, it's hard to keep all this shit straight, uh, at one point, they're
33:50like, oh my god, there it is, as they're flying through the galaxy, and it's the gateway galaxy,
33:55I'm like, what, did they mean to go there, did they intend to go there, I don't, I don't
34:01know where they're going, do you know what I'm saying, yes, are they flying through, what
34:05happened, so somebody give me, when Peach went, yes, yeah, so when those, when the star
34:09went, he's like, hey, they were captured and sent beyond the gateway galaxy, so that's
34:13the only, that's the anchor point, that's the only thing that she knows, okay, Rob, Rob said
34:18to go to the gateway galaxy, right, because they're like, there it is, he's, he's pointing
34:24him to, uh, pilots, yeah, pilots, okay, well, anyways, uh, Bowser is, uh, reunited with his
34:31son, and you can tell that Bowser does care about his, his son, they do some flashbacks where
34:37he was basically raising his son with this story of, uh, galactic domination, and, and
34:42killing other civilizations, and, and having a big fucking gun, and having planet Bowser, because
34:48everybody made fun of them, and they, you know, they felt like shit, uh, but, so when
34:53his son grew up, I, I don't know how this world works, like, how does he, like, they have the
34:58best technology, the, the craziest weapons, it's like, why do none of these other universes
35:04go, all right, guys, well, okay, no, let's not think about logic, let's not think about
35:09logic, okay, so they'll, these people can conquer other people at any time, um, then he realizes
35:14his son is a kind of a maniacal maniac guy, but at the same time, you know, cause he's
35:20sort of reformed, he's been through therapy when he's hanging out with, I guess, the boys,
35:25and he kinda likes, he likes Luigi, kinda likes Mario, kinda has a grudge against him, but
35:32thinks they're all right guys, and I thought this was gonna be cool, I thought he was gonna
35:36be able to reform his son, and they were gonna bond over that, and bond over, like, you know,
35:43just being cool, and, you know, there are other villains in the, in the Star of Super Mario
35:47world that you can bring, that Bowser could fight with them, he could be the Vegeta of the
35:52universe, but, no, they decide that he's like, ah, yeah, they, fuck him, let's, let's beat him
36:00up, wait, what, but, yeah, cause they brainwashed your father, and he gives this weak speech,
36:07and I didn't think he bought it, you know, I thought, oh, that's a temporary band-aid,
36:10he's gonna follow him for a little bit, and then later on, he's gonna notice that we are
36:14literally torturing and killing a woman to power a beam that will destroy galaxies, and,
36:22you know, he shows emotion throughout the whole film, and then all of a sudden, it's gone,
36:28and it doesn't make any sense, it's not a cool turn, it'd be too complex, Joe, it'd have
36:32to be simple, yeah, cause I was hoping for a team-up with Bowser, and they're gonna try
36:37to stop it, that would've been awesome, Super Mario RPG, yeah, that would've been, fuck yeah,
36:41I think that would've been better, and instead, no, we get the worst version of Bowser, he just
36:46goes back to his normal ways, he turns into a minion for his son, uh, has a fight at the
36:52end, falls in lava, doesn't even have the fucking, uh, you know,
36:58respect to do the Terminator thing, cause they've done, they've referenced everything
37:03already, uh, so he falls in the lava and dies, but then he comes up as bones, oh, yeah, oh,
37:09yeah, you know, oh, I've seen that before, and then, you know, his son's like, yeah, and
37:14then they fight, and, um, and I guess we do get a small turn here, where the son is using
37:19his powerful paintbrush, which is never explained, unless you play the games, you don't know what
37:24the fuck is going on, uh, are we gonna talk about this, are we gonna take it away from
37:28him, or whatever, but he creates a fucking dragon, at first, I'm like, okay, are we doing
37:32Spyro now, are they making a rep, cause we're referencing everything, oh, yeah, the Super
37:37Mario, for a time, had to go up against Spyro, and he's getting his ass kicked, cause Spyro's
37:41selling a lot of money, I don't know, no, it's just a purple dragon, it looks similar, but instead
37:47of attacking the, the, the Mario brothers and Yoshi, he attacks Browser Jr., and so they
37:55have to, you know, uh, team up a little bit, and, uh, Mario just saves, Mario just grabs
38:02the most powerful power-up that was in his pocket, it's supposed to be random, though,
38:05and it, okay, well, then he, he randomly grabs it, and then, the most powerful one, and then
38:09he explodes to the dragon and saves him, and then you think there would be some, like, heartfelt
38:12thing, thank you for saving my son, yeah, you know, I'm sorry, nothing, absolutely
38:16nothing, nothing, all of these moments are teed up, and they could have done any one
38:20of them, and then they decided to do none of them, instead, they choose the lowest common
38:23denominator, where it's like, oh, now they're a son, father-son, criminal duo, and they're
38:29in prison, like, you know, like an old school bumbling Lex Luthor and Lenny, and they're
38:35like, oh, this prison can't hold us, yeah, it's in an advocate, man, credits, great,
38:42great, that sucks, the sisters get reunited, because it turns out that, uh, they're sisters,
38:49and, um, you think that there would be, it'd be cool, and they'd be like, oh, I missed you
38:53so much, I've always been watching you, but I know it's, no, none of that, um, they just,
38:58how do all these, like, none of this stuff comes together in a cool way, how, how did the Lumas
39:04get over into the final battle, Luigi accidentally turned on a radio,
39:11that, like, that's it, there's, and then, and just because the, the, they get the radio signal,
39:17then they come, one of the Lumas is like, Luigi, and then, and then,
39:25so then the observatory comes over, and then everybody's excited and happy, and then Peach
39:29goes into this room, where she discovers her origins, and she had just forgot, and, uh,
39:36she's a baby, she's a baby, yeah, and, um, yeah, and so then they, they, they go home,
39:43and then we have this one good moment, they, like, they go back home, they just, oh, yeah,
39:50so you're saying after they win, yeah, after they win, and the defeat of bad guys, and everything
39:55blows up, yeah, they go back home, they're like, yeah, let's go to the castle, they're sitting
39:59there, and previously, the castle was, like, lifted, so just a big crater, and thrown in the
40:04Honeybean Kingdom, what, what happened, okay, Luigi's just, like, it died, the castle died, oh, yeah,
40:12the castle died, and it was a line delivery, it made me and Joe laugh, and I went over to
40:18Joe's, like, one,
40:19they got one, I gave it that, but it was at the end of the film, where it just, randomly,
40:25it was, the castle died,
40:26the castle died, the castle was alive, so then they randomly make a new castle, man, do you see
40:34how I go from a curmudgeon old man to laughing our butts off, and smiling at one joke, if you'd
40:42put
40:42all these other jokes in it, then maybe we would be on board for all this fucking nonsense, we wanted
40:49more jokes, we wanted more emotional weight, which is what we fucking said throughout the whole review,
40:53which nobody's gonna agree with, anyways, same thing you said with the first one, but, um, or maybe
40:59they're, like, what are y'all talking about, there are really funny jokes, and really emotional beats,
41:06what part, are you, are you on a medication that makes you feel, do you feel deeply more than normal,
41:14heightened, I want some, please, yeah, I wish I could, commercials make me crack, yeah, commercials
41:20make you clap, commercials make me crack up and laugh and, yeah, clap, all right, but anyways, um,
41:27enough, we're sorry, we're not, we're not attacking you, um, they, I mean, we are, I mean, Alex,
41:34excuse me, no, my expectations were lower, well, lowered anyway, but holy shit, I expected it
41:40to be this low, I actually think that people are gonna come around a little bit more and
41:43be like, hey, you gotta, I expected more, kind of like, we'll see, the Joker, the second
41:48one, for sure, the Joker, and it's just like, hey, you didn't have two movies to steal from
41:52this time, what happened, and it's like, oh, yeah, it's, so, uh, you know, the final battle,
41:56it's Yoshi, uh, uh, Mario, and Luigi, and Mario gets what outfit? He gets the drill, and
42:04Yoshi gets what outfit, or Luigi gets what outfit? The clouds, so he's throwing clouds. Those
42:08are, those are cool. Yoshi just turns blue, and he's just. Is this in the game? I, I don't
42:13know of this particular one. Honestly, at this point, I don't know, I haven't played, uh. So
42:16he turns blue, and he's just floating, he's just a big old balloon, then. But when he
42:20blows, he goes all over the place, yeah. And so then, at the end of the battle, boom, bumps
42:25against the boss, and then deflates, and slams into the thing, right? And then, yes, and
42:31then he goes back to his normal thing. They all know his normal form, yeah. Yes. Except
42:37for the red star, which turns him into the most, I personally like this form, because he's
42:44red and black, and he's super saiyan. And I'm like, oh, is this, is this, uh.
42:50The Mario Galaxy's version of, uh, Supersonic, you know, how they're always doing that in,
42:56in that world, so Nintendo sees that, and like, oh, fuck, we gotta, we gotta power up Mario
43:01if these two ever fight. So here's, here's his version. So he powers up, and he wins.
43:08Everything is done very quickly. Now, uh, using, while they're fighting, uh, Peach is trying
43:17to break open to, break open this bubble that's containing her sister, Rosalina, and she can't
43:23do it, but she realizes, oh, we just touch hands, and that creates power, so she gets
43:28her sister to touch hands with her. She touches hands, and it cracks the glass, and it blows
43:32everything up, and they are saved and rescued. And, uh, and then Fox sends them all to prison,
43:39and then everybody's like, all right, cool, see you later, dudes. And he's like, he's gone.
43:44In an instant, I guess he's finding his way back to his universe. They said, they fixed my
43:48warp drive, so I'm going home. Okay. So what happens when you have, what, your mechanics are
43:53fried? So they are in the same universe. They're not in a different universe. They're in the
43:56Alpha Quadrant. He's in the Delta Quadrant. They're in the Alpha Quadrant, right? Because you just
44:00have to warp drive over there. He said, he said different universe, but in the beginning, but
44:05who knows? They don't actually give a shit. Now, so then after that, the two stingers were the prison
44:10scene where, uh, the star kid, this is one of the chicks, it's a blue star. She is my, not,
44:16she is the
44:16biggest villain of all the films, and she is just, uh, off kilter, and she says some, some sinister, uh,
44:25James Bond villain stuff, and it scares the hell out of, uh, Bowser and Bowser Jr. And then the final
44:32scene is a tease at Daisy, because I think Daisy is the final princess that we haven't seen, and if
44:39you
44:40can get, bring her in, then you have all the princesses, and I don't really remember Daisy. I, you know,
44:45I stopped playing the games by then, but I think Daisy, like, maybe Super Mario, Land 2, I don't know,
44:52one of them, in the 90s, and, uh, it, she's a princess of a completely different kingdom.
44:59I wonder if she's the, is she the princess of the sand, sand, some, some was sand.
45:03Well, in this, she's the princess of the galaxy, um, the bus station they went to. Remember when
45:10the monkey stole from them, because she's that princess, right? You think she's the princess
45:14of that area? I don't know, I mean, everyone knows who that guy calls her princess, so maybe,
45:18Yeah, she's famous. I mean, yeah, so then she punches out this monkey. This monkey has been taking shit
45:25You're stealing stuff. What are you looking her up? Yeah, what's her thing?
45:29Prince Stacy Sarah sand land Sarah sand. Yes, I'm doing Mario land
45:3389 not 90s. Okay, I was wrong. I was also in the movie with
45:40Bob Hoskins. Yeah
45:42Daisy was in that yeah
45:44I don't know sworn or should just a name only or something. Uh, I don't remember. I'd rather watch that
45:50movie
45:51Yeah, you said that about the first night I stand by it
45:56Okay, but if we were to if I have to watch this shit a third time
46:01Then you got to bring in while Wario you got to bring in my favorite while Luigi and make it
46:07funny and make it fun
46:08And then y'all totally got to bring the minion riders over who writes the fucking minions because
46:13This shit is a layer get silly with it and then we can
46:17Yeah, Prince Stacy. Oh, she was princess Daisy. Yeah, yeah
46:21So, okay was princess peach and the live-action one no, I think it's just princess days days. Oh, they
46:28use daisy. That's why okay
46:31um
46:32Minions and monsters is coming out
46:36July 1st yeah, which is why Alex says oh
46:41Fuck yeah, it's like right it's gonna cut the fucking legs out of super girl four days or something like
46:47yeah
46:47Oh my god, it's even worse situation for in Superman cuz Superman has had its momentum cut
46:54By Jurassic Park first and then undercut by a fantastic four, but that was like a week later or was
47:01it two weeks later?
47:01I don't know
47:04Maybe a week or fuck a TCU is fucked
47:08Okay
47:09Monsters minions and monsters was it's written by Brian Lynch and Pierre cough
47:17coffin and directed by Pierre coffin
47:21Give it to that guy man
47:23Give the next Super Mario feel I know they think well we got we made 1.4 billion dollars with
47:28these two directors and this writer
47:30They brought them back. I mean, that's the right thing to do is to bring the team back
47:34It's gonna be successful. I think this movie is gonna make a serious amount of money
47:37I'm not saying like it your kids will love it and it'll be successful. Yes
47:40We say that but the answer is and what you asked me as far as like the rating is how
47:44do you make it better in a vacuum?
47:46Do you think that this is a good movie and was like no?
47:48I don't think this is a good movie. No, unfortunately not
47:49Yeah, so how do you make it better? You have to make me care about the characters more you put
47:54them in situations where I'm
47:56Worried for them or I really want them to get back together because they were separated or we learn something
48:01emotionally or you just make me laugh the entire way through because there's
48:04Silliness and like funny stuff the bond with Yoshi not pushed not strong enough not expanded on the the love
48:12story between
48:13Luigi and and princess not explored not push not done enough
48:18Uh, you know the the brotherly love thing which was in the first film which we liked when it was
48:24less less here
48:25It's even less here. I'm not because granted they're together more of the time
48:33There's actually sometimes this film is is better and I do like it better than the first one, but sometimes
48:39it's worse
48:40All right, um, I think I have
48:45I
48:45Think we've covered pretty much everything. We got the stingers. We got the all that what else?
48:54What else could we bring to this?
48:56Uh, you know because Star Fox was in it. It gives me hope that we will see a
49:01standalone Star Fox film which I think after watching this I think it could work and
49:07Since it will be a completely different writing and directing team more than likely
49:11It'll probably focus on him and I I would be excited for that and
49:16Illumination and
49:18Nintendo should be excited for that is it gonna make as much money as Mario no
49:22I think I don't think Star Fox is as popular as Mario, but it would still be fun to see
49:27a spin-off there
49:29um
49:29Now we'll get sitting them in three. We'll get what Samus
49:35Yeah, I was thinking what else could we do?
49:37Yeah, oh, yeah, and three they'll throw in a cameo for Metroid
49:42Falcon punch hell, yeah, what else could they do falcon punch dr. Mario pikachu oh dr. Mario
49:50Combine the real big no no
49:51Then you do an avengers film once all you get all that yeah, you fight fight the hand man
49:57You know
49:59What's the box was it Mac?
50:02His story there's there's one villain that I think comes along with daisy so I forget what his name is
50:08like can can tanga can
50:11Katanga
50:13I don't know put it in the comments
50:15You know, it's not obviously a well-known more popular villain
50:20But they could definitely do that because I don't think that bowser jr and bowser will be the villain of
50:26the third film
50:27It's can't can't
50:28So you have to go with what what people want and people want wario they want waluigi
50:33That better be there, but they don't set that up here. They only tease. Here's the third princess
50:38So if anything if they keep with that it's the third prison princess and katanga or whatever that villain was
50:45They're unstoppable though. They could just be like but because they but they just throw thing
50:50They threw that out the window yoshi in new york and brooklyn, you know
50:53They could just throw this and then say yeah. Yeah, well now she's a part of the crew and then
50:57the three of them go up against
51:00Waluigi or side quest yeah
51:02Side quest the movie. That's what it has been
51:05Side quest the movie we need a little bit more main quests
51:09And and a little less side quests though here
51:11They say the side quests are the main quest and i'm like yeah, but they don't they don't feel
51:15Like main quest no all right anyways, that's it for us
51:19Let us know what you thought are you gonna see uh the mario movie?
51:23Do you agree with what we're saying or you're like no you guys are crazy?
