Transcript
00:00:08Big city, bright lights, this is the place where stars are born, baby.
00:00:15More idols have come through this town than anywhere else in the world.
00:00:19The best singers in the country are here to put on a show.
00:00:26But the thing is, this city has no idea what's about to happen.
00:00:31Hollywood Week has arrived in Music City.
00:00:41And the lights are brighter than ever.
00:00:47With the band behind them, it's time for our idol hopefuls to face the music.
00:00:55Hollywood Week in Nashville, outstanding.
00:00:59Music City is like holy ground.
00:01:00The energy in this city is different.
00:01:02It's super nerve-wracking, but super exciting.
00:01:04Hollywood Week in Music City just feels surreal.
00:01:08They'll have one song, one shot to leave it all on the stage.
00:01:13My life could be changing right now.
00:01:16Buckle up, y'all, because this is American Idol.
00:01:21I'd like you to knock me out.
00:01:27One hundred twenty-seven of the nation's most talented singers have graduated to the next step in this already epic
00:01:35season.
00:01:37Hollywood Week, Music City, takeover.
00:01:40We just had auditions.
00:01:43Moving right into Hollywood Week.
00:01:45This is the earliest they've ever went right in there with the full band.
00:01:49One shot, some of them have never played with a band in their lives.
00:01:54Okay, here it goes.
00:01:55Some people can handle that, and some people can't handle that.
00:01:58We're out for blood.
00:01:59Each hopeful will sing for the judges.
00:02:02And more than fifteen hundred eager idol fans.
00:02:04It'll come here.
00:02:06Throughout the day, the judges will stop down.
00:02:08Alright, what do we think?
00:02:09Deliberate, and begin making some tough decisions.
00:02:13It's sink or swim.
00:02:14For most, this is where the dream ends.
00:02:17I'm not sure if that was the right song.
00:02:20Bring it on!
00:02:22I love it!
00:02:27But for the best of the best, the journey will continue.
00:02:31Your dreams are still alive.
00:02:33Into the all-new Golden Room.
00:02:36Where the only thing to do is wait.
00:02:39Still in the race for the top 30.
00:02:41But nothing is final.
00:02:43We got more bloodshed coming.
00:02:45Because the decision that matters the most comes at the end of the round.
00:02:49We're out for blood.
00:02:50We're gonna be looking for that next level
00:02:54that instantly goes from American Idol stage to that Grammy Award winning artist.
00:02:58And that's what we're looking for.
00:03:01Hollywood Week Music City Takeover starts right now.
00:03:05Ladies and gentlemen, are you ready?
00:03:09Say hello to your judges.
00:03:13Let's get this party going.
00:03:17Oh yeah!
00:03:19Coming all the way from Alabama, here's 26-year-old Brian Thomas!
00:03:25Yeah!
00:03:26Yeah!
00:03:26Yeah!
00:03:27Yeah!
00:03:35My last audition was pretty cool.
00:03:37Don't look at me.
00:03:38We're not looking.
00:03:40Okay.
00:03:41No one had really seen my face before my audition.
00:03:44So it was great to finally be able to step down into the spotlight.
00:03:48Wow.
00:03:49Wow.
00:03:50Everything after that just felt like magical.
00:03:53Hey!
00:03:54So.
00:03:55Yes, yes, yes, yes!
00:03:58Ah, congratulations!
00:04:02Welcome to my hometown, Mobile, Alabama.
00:04:09I started supporting myself completely off of music with a band of guys, you know, we played
00:04:15three to five shows a week.
00:04:17So I'm used to performing on stage, but never in such a beautiful theater as this or being
00:04:23in front of that giant live band, but this is my opportunity to show people who I am.
00:04:33I'm going to be singing Champagne Problems by Taylor Swift for you guys.
00:04:36Oh, wow.
00:04:39Oh, wow.
00:04:40Oh, my God.
00:04:45You booked the night train for a reason, so you could sit there in this hurt.
00:05:00I love it.
00:05:01I love it.
00:05:23Your heart was glass, I dropped it. Champagne problems.
00:05:31From the Chevy North, November flush in your flannel coat.
00:05:36This storm was once a madhouse. I made a joke, but it's made for me how.
00:05:42Evergreen, our group of friends don't think we'll say that word again.
00:05:47Then soon they'll have to know to deck the halls that we once walked through.
00:05:52One for the money, two for the show. I never was ready, so I watch you flow.
00:05:58Sometimes you just don't know the answer. Someone's on their knees and ask you.
00:06:04You could have made such a lovely bride. What a shame she's stuck in her head, they said.
00:06:09But you'll find the real thing instead.
00:06:12She'll patch up your tapestry that I shredded. Hold your hand while dancing.
00:06:18Never leave you standing. Crestfalling on the landing. Champagne problems.
00:06:32Thank you guys so much.
00:06:35Oh, yeah. Passionate. Oh, yeah.
00:06:39Look at it!
00:06:40Look at it!
00:06:44Bryant, you are a showman. I love your vibe, your style. I love that you picked that song because, I
00:06:52mean, I feel like you're going to keep us on our toes.
00:06:54And I love that. And you've got a great voice on top of it. It's so soulful.
00:07:00Very cool. Thank you.
00:07:03For now, Bryant will have to wait to learn his fate in the competition.
00:07:07This year, the judges will watch groups of performances back to back.
00:07:10Very cool.
00:07:11Then, they'll deliberate and deliver results, all adding up to the biggest cut in Idol history.
00:07:17All right.
00:07:18Killed it.
00:07:19Did they clean up the glasses?
00:07:20Did they get them? I thought those were truck stop glasses.
00:07:24Who's next?
00:07:26Carey?
00:07:27Who we got? Who we got?
00:07:29All right. Here we go.
00:07:31This is a really big moment for me.
00:07:33I'm ready to get out there and just do what I got to do.
00:07:36Never in a million years I thought I would be here.
00:07:39The audition with the judges went really good.
00:07:42It was such a vibe.
00:07:44Oh, boy.
00:07:44Hi, Miss Carey.
00:07:45Hi.
00:07:46And just having my son on the Idol journey has been a joy.
00:07:55I've been doing music for six years.
00:07:58I've had a lot of ups and downs and I was doubting myself, but I never gave up.
00:08:03That fire was still burning.
00:08:05You want it bigger?
00:08:05Yeah, I want it bigger.
00:08:06Oh.
00:08:07I'll make sure we're big there.
00:08:08I just want to pour out my heart at that.
00:08:09Oh, let's go.
00:08:10The song I'm singing today is I Won't Give Up by Jason Mraz.
00:08:14It speaks to me because the first thing I thought about is just me and my son.
00:08:19So when I sing the song, I'm singing to him.
00:08:21I think at the very beginning, I want you to sing it like you're singing a lullaby.
00:08:26Mm-hmm.
00:08:27Like you're rocking him to sleep.
00:08:29Just really simple.
00:08:31I do want to be somebody for my son.
00:08:33I want him to know you can do anything you put your mind to do.
00:08:37You want to come watch your mom with me?
00:08:40Okay, come around this way.
00:08:45You sit in my seat.
00:08:46Ladies and gentlemen, make some noise for Keilah Richardson!
00:08:51Oh, yeah!
00:08:56My name is Keilah, and I'll be singing I Won't Give Up by Jason Mraz.
00:09:01I want to let my son know that.
00:09:03Never give up, baby boy.
00:09:04I love you.
00:09:05This is for you, baby.
00:09:06It's for him, baby boy.
00:09:07There you go.
00:09:15When I look into your eyes,
00:09:21It's like watching the night sky.
00:09:25Or a beautiful sunrise
00:09:31Well, there's so much stay home
00:09:37Cause even the stars, they burn
00:09:43Some even fall to the earth
00:09:49And we got a lot to learn
00:09:54And God knows we're worth it
00:10:00I don't want to be someone who walks away so easily
00:10:04I'm here to make the difference I can make
00:10:11And in the end, you're still my friend
00:10:16Yeah, we got a lot to stay
00:10:21I won't give up
00:10:24Oh, won't us
00:10:27Even if the skies get rough
00:10:32I'm giving you all my love
00:10:37I'm still looking up
00:10:41Yeah, I won't give up
00:10:46Won't give up on us
00:10:49Even if the sky
00:10:51It make it rough
00:10:54True, I'm giving you all my love
00:10:59I'm still looking up
00:11:04No, I won't give up
00:11:30I don't know how you sang with him
00:11:33Looking at you like that
00:11:35Listen, it's so good to see you here
00:11:37I love your look
00:11:38I love the song
00:11:40You just slayed that
00:11:41And even showed us more of what you are
00:11:44Thank you, thank you so much
00:11:47You did great, Mom
00:11:48I mean
00:11:49Your confidence
00:11:51The way you just sung to the whole audience
00:11:54Really warmed my heart
00:11:56Thank you so much
00:11:57It's for you, baby
00:11:58I love you, Juju
00:11:59So much
00:12:03Whoever's most likely to get fired is me
00:12:05And he may have just took my job
00:12:06Don't even think about it
00:12:09Great job
00:12:10That was beautiful
00:12:10Thank you guys so much
00:12:13So great
00:12:16I'm just
00:12:17I'm overwhelmed
00:12:18I like to sing that song like that
00:12:20It was one of the best moments of my life
00:12:22Your mom did really great
00:12:24You want to go see her?
00:12:26I just hope I do
00:12:27Just get to the next round of that performance
00:12:29It's for my son
00:12:30So we got to get there
00:12:31Is that your son tonight?
00:12:34Yes
00:12:35Thank you
00:12:36You did amazing
00:12:37That's
00:12:38I love you more than anything
00:12:42Music City, you ready to rock?
00:12:45Stay tuned as Hollywood Week continues
00:12:48With your viral audition favorites
00:12:50Fighting for a spot in the top 30
00:12:52Hollywood Week in Music City is exciting
00:12:55And it's drama
00:12:56And it's stressful
00:12:57You caused so much excitement
00:12:59He almost rolls his ass off the back of this damn fool
00:13:02A lot of people are going home today
00:13:04I really hope I'm not one of them
00:13:06I gave him my everything
00:13:07She walked out like
00:13:09This is my state
00:13:10You are a star
00:13:12Get ready for the ride
00:13:14It's going to be really, really special
00:13:17At least I look hot when I cry
00:13:23Welcome back to American Idol
00:13:25Tonight, our singers anxiously await their turn to hit the stage
00:13:29In hopes of surviving the most brutal cut in Hollywood Week history
00:13:34Knowing only 30 of us are going to make it through is a super scary feeling
00:13:39I mean, this is crazy
00:13:42It makes my belly hurt
00:13:43I feel like I'm going to throw up
00:13:44Oh, Lord have mercy
00:13:46I just wanted to come and sit and listen to people
00:13:48But you're the butcher now
00:13:50I know
00:13:50It's terrible
00:13:53It's a war right now
00:13:54But, you know, I've dreamed of this my entire life
00:13:57So getting to the top 30
00:13:59This would change literally everything for me
00:14:02Make some noise for Nibby
00:14:03Natural
00:14:04How we doing, baby?
00:14:07Oh, yeah
00:14:10I, yeah
00:14:11I believe
00:14:12Singing a Carrie Underwood song in front of Carrie
00:14:15Was definitely a little nerve-wracking
00:14:16But she gave me, like, really good advice
00:14:18If you start off out of the gate
00:14:21Going 100 miles an hour
00:14:22There's nowhere left to go
00:14:24So if the audition was 100 miles per hour
00:14:26What speed will this be?
00:14:28Slow
00:14:28We're going to take you slow
00:14:29We're going to be sexy about it
00:14:31We're going to be sexy?
00:14:32Oh, yeah
00:14:32I'm excited
00:14:33I'm ready
00:14:34Let's see it
00:14:35Get with me
00:14:38Let's take our time tonight
00:14:42Girl
00:14:43Well, the smallest stars are watching
00:14:49Underneath the chandelier
00:14:54We're dancing all alone
00:14:59There's no reason to hide
00:15:02What we're feeling inside
00:15:04Right now
00:15:09So, baby, let's just turn down the light
00:15:13And close the door
00:15:16Oh, I love that dress
00:15:19But you won't need it anymore
00:15:22Oh, I know you won't need it no more
00:15:27Let's just kiss till we're naked, baby
00:15:32Massage you on the floor
00:15:34Come on!
00:15:36Oh, take it off for me
00:15:40For me, for me, for me
00:15:41For me now, girl
00:15:43Massage you on the floor
00:15:48Oh, take it off for me
00:15:51For me, for me, for me, for me
00:15:53Now, girl
00:15:55I set Versace on the floor
00:16:04There you go
00:16:05Thank you
00:16:08When you cause a judge so much excitement
00:16:12That he almost rolls his ass off the back of this damn thing right here
00:16:16It is clear that you are doing something entertaining
00:16:21You are just performing
00:16:23I will tell you, though
00:16:24Song choice is going to be the master of here
00:16:28We know you have a voice in there, okay?
00:16:32So, if there's a next time
00:16:33I want you to come out and show it off
00:16:36But overall, you did a great job
00:16:41So, Livy now waits for results while the round continues
00:16:46I'm nervous because I'm hearing so many amazing singers
00:16:59This performance is a huge deal
00:17:01I get the chance to show the judges
00:17:03That I'm worth it
00:17:05Like I knew I would
00:17:07You look like a star
00:17:09And you have such a big, big voice
00:17:11But I had trouble picking up a lot of those lyrics
00:17:14Because of the bending and the rounding out
00:17:17And the back phrasing and all that
00:17:19But, you know, we'll see what happens later
00:17:22Okay
00:17:22Thank you
00:17:24I just thought that I had done better than he said
00:17:29But apparently I didn't
00:17:33I'm a little nervous
00:17:34I'm getting a little overwhelmed
00:17:36The judges, they have some really tough decisions to make today
00:17:39But I want to be one of the top 30
00:17:43Like so bad that I could hit a back flip right now
00:17:47I can't flip, but I'll try
00:17:53I never thought I would make it to Hollywood Week
00:17:56But singing has always been my dream
00:18:00And my dad, he just encouraged me to do whatever I put my mind to
00:18:04And he's like, baby, you gonna get it
00:18:06I am missing my dad, wishing that he was here
00:18:13My dad passed away 11 years ago from cancer
00:18:16I was 13 years old
00:18:20I was a daddy's girl
00:18:22I was there every day, every step of the way
00:18:26At the hospital, I fed him
00:18:29I gave him water
00:18:31I gave him his
00:18:34Take an angel by the wind
00:18:36I was there to the very end
00:18:44Dear Dad, I've lived so much life since you've been gone
00:18:48And sometimes I wish I could sit with you
00:18:50And tell you all of it
00:18:52I carry you with me in my heart
00:18:56Every step forward
00:18:59I miss you more than words could ever say
00:19:04Love your baby girl
00:19:08I know he's proud
00:19:10With this performance
00:19:13I know he's looking down and shining down on me
00:19:17And when I hit this stage, the heavens will be dancing
00:19:27How did you get here
00:19:33Nobody's supposed to be here
00:19:38I've tried that love thing for the last time
00:19:46But when I turn around
00:19:49Again, love has knocked me down
00:19:54My heart got broke
00:19:57My heart got broke
00:19:57You know it hurt so bad
00:19:58I'm sad, safe
00:20:01Love is again
00:20:03So I place my heart under lock and key
00:20:06To take some time and take care of me
00:20:10But I turn around
00:20:13But I turn around
00:20:13And you're standing here
00:20:19Standing here
00:20:21Oh, yeah
00:20:25No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no
00:20:32I've tried it over and over
00:20:35But my heart can't know
00:20:41No, no, no, no
00:20:44Nobody's supposed to be here
00:20:47Came along
00:20:49And changed my mind
00:20:52How did you get here
00:21:12I don't know where you're going to be in the stars, but you are a star.
00:21:22With the first line of singers complete, making it so difficult.
00:21:26What are you putting on these people?
00:21:27It's time for the judges to discuss what they've heard.
00:21:30I had her as a yes.
00:21:32You think?
00:21:33She had the wrong song.
00:21:34That was the wrong everything.
00:21:35This year, they will first decide if our hopefuls have shown enough potential.
00:21:41Make it here to the Golden Room, and you're still in the mix for a spot in the top 30.
00:21:46Otherwise, it's the end of the road.
00:21:48All right.
00:21:49You know I'm sad to see this one go.
00:21:52But for those who've made it here, they can't get too comfortable,
00:21:55because more dramatic cuts are just around the corner.
00:21:59I've always dreamed of being in a position like this, so.
00:22:04It's so hard having to cut this many, y'all.
00:22:14At this stage of the competition, we have to cut from 127 down to 30.
00:22:24This is not your everyday easy task.
00:22:30With the people I call, please step forward.
00:22:34Bryant.
00:22:37Kila.
00:22:42Makaya.
00:22:46Front row, you are going to the Golden Room.
00:22:50Your journey with us continues.
00:22:56Back row, we're sorry, but your journey with American Idol ends now.
00:23:01It's like a whole weight that's been lifted off of me.
00:23:05I feel so good.
00:23:06I'm just really celebrating.
00:23:10Going back to serving tables, you know?
00:23:12We didn't get what we wanted, but it's okay.
00:23:15It just wasn't enough, basically.
00:23:20Made it through to the Golden Room.
00:23:22I have no idea what's going to happen next, but I cannot wait.
00:23:34Let the church say amen.
00:23:36Amen.
00:23:37Amen.
00:23:45People keep on learning.
00:23:49Right here.
00:23:51While soldiers keep on learning.
00:23:59Oh, girl.
00:24:02Keep on learning.
00:24:05Because it won't be too long.
00:24:11I'm so glad that you let me try it again.
00:24:15It's my last time on earth.
00:24:17I'm in the whole world of sin.
00:24:19I'm so glad that I know more than I begin.
00:24:22I'm going to keep on trying.
00:24:25I'm so glad that I know more than I begin.
00:24:42But I'm so glad that I know more than I begin.
00:24:48Till I reach my higher ground.
00:24:59I'm so glad that I know more than I begin.
00:25:29I'm so glad that I know more than I begin.
00:25:34up next to perform and hoping for a similar reaction from the judges

00:25:45i grew up listening to rock my dad loves hard rock music and i always listen to it with him
00:25:53my dad bought my first guitar and i still use it today both of my parents are musicians and
00:25:58it's just amazing to have them see me do my thing coming up next get up audience for madison
00:26:05moon i am very excited to see carrie again i'm actually doing a song that she did when she
00:26:14was on the show i'm going to be doing alone by heart when i saw carrie's idol performance
00:26:19of alone it introduced me to the band heart this is a very challenging song especially
00:26:25i take it up all steps so i'm doing it a key higher it's kind of insane that i'm going
00:26:31to sing it in front of carrie so i'm hoping for the best
00:26:42i hear the ticking of the clock i'm lying here the room's pinched off
00:26:53i wonder where you are tonight no answer on the telephone and the night goes by so very slow
00:27:08oh i hope that it won't end all alone
00:27:22oh i hope that it won't end all alone
00:27:29i never really got it till i met you
00:27:36and i chose me to the moon how do i got you alive how do i got you alive
00:27:49oh
00:27:51oh
00:27:51oh
00:27:51oh
00:27:52oh
00:27:52oh
00:27:54oh
00:27:56oh
00:27:57oh
00:27:59oh
00:28:00Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh...
00:28:14You did it! You did it!
00:28:19Carrie did that song on the show a while back.
00:28:22Now, what is she going to say about that?
00:28:26You are the only person on planet Earth who has ever raised the key on that song.
00:28:35All I got to say is dang.
00:28:42Wow.
00:28:44Oh, my God.
00:28:45I just sang in front of Carrie Underwood again.
00:28:49Raised the freaking key.
00:28:52I didn't know it was possible to do that.
00:28:54Now it's judgment time for Jordan and Madison.
00:29:00No matter what happens, man, that is the best that I've ever done.
00:29:05I got a bloodbath.
00:29:07We're a little more brutal.
00:29:07Cutting them in half, and then we got to do another half.
00:29:11Jordan.
00:29:13Madison.
00:29:14Your dream is still alive.
00:29:17Thank you very much.
00:29:24That's crazy.
00:29:26I was not expecting that.
00:29:27Oh, my God.
00:29:32I'm really proud of myself.
00:29:38It's just insane that this is such a huge cut, and for me to be considered to be in the
00:29:44top 30, it means the world.
00:29:45So Madison is the first of our rockers to get to the Golden Room.
00:29:50And after that, it was time for the male rockers to take the stage.
00:29:54Music City, you ready to rock?
00:30:10So you know I'm in your corner.
00:30:12I feel like we had a few hiccups in there.
00:30:20It felt like he shouldn't miss anything on that song.
00:30:28I mean, you got to keep it high-energy rock and roll, right?
00:30:31What's rocking, baby?
00:30:32Here we go.
00:30:33Let's go.
00:30:35Clean shirt and new shoes.
00:30:38And I don't know where I am going to.
00:30:42You're just a good time, Noah.
00:30:44I don't come down to, like, the Broadway bars, but I would come if you were playing.
00:30:50Oh, my God.
00:30:52Is every girl crazy about a sharp-dressed man?
00:31:00Rock can do no wrong when Carrie's eyes.
00:31:03That's not true.
00:31:04I mean, he did the moonwalk in boots, people.
00:31:06He moonwalked.
00:31:10I don't know.
00:31:11He might be someone people want to get behind.
00:31:14But, I mean, is he going to be a contender?
00:31:16No.
00:31:21Brett, step forward, please.
00:31:24Noah.
00:31:28I'm sorry, but your journey with us ends right now.
00:31:34They canned me.
00:31:36I think I'm going to follow him on Instagram after this.
00:31:40The crowd started cheering, and I completely lost my spot a couple of times, but it's all good.
00:31:45It was awesome to be a part of the whole thing.
00:31:47I'm losing my rockers.
00:31:49You know I'm sad.
00:31:51Cheers.
00:31:52God bless America.
00:32:00Make some noise for Trace Casanova!
00:32:03Come on, Trace!
00:32:04Come on!
00:32:06Oh, boy.
00:32:07Here we go.
00:32:08Oh, yeah.
00:32:10Mike, Michael, Michael, raise your hand if your name is Michael.
00:32:14Oh, we got one over here.
00:32:16All right.
00:32:16Is that good?
00:32:17Thank you, everybody.
00:32:18That concludes our mic check.
00:32:24Let's swing it, boys.
00:32:33Crazy, but that's how it goes.
00:32:38I can't believe you got me in it, then.
00:32:40Living as for all.
00:32:45Going off the rails on a crazy train.
00:32:53I know that things are going wrong for me.
00:33:01You gotta listen to my word.
00:33:07Yeah, yeah.
00:33:09Going off the rails on a crazy train.
00:33:16Going off the rails on a crazy train.
00:33:38No!
00:33:40No!
00:33:45Trace, what are you doing?
00:33:48I mean...
00:33:49Trace is just being Trace.
00:33:51I mean, Trace.
00:33:52I mean, I love it.
00:33:53You kill it, man.
00:33:55Thank you, Trace.
00:33:59Are y'all on drugs?
00:34:00We're red.
00:34:01Sir, you're stirring the pot out there with those guys.
00:34:04That's what we do, man.
00:34:05Yeah.
00:34:05I'm glad I'm good at this because I can't serve tables.
00:34:07Well, either they want to rise or they want to fall.
00:34:10It's kind of making our decisions easy.
00:34:12Cuts.
00:34:12Yeah.
00:34:14Audience, please put your hands together.
00:34:16Coming all the way from Dorado, Puerto Rico.
00:34:19Rowan!
00:34:26Since my audition, I actually flew back to Death Valley, did my 8th hour shift at the Desert
00:34:34Outfitters bike shop.
00:34:35These are the prices for the e-bikes.
00:34:37For me, it's very important to keep this job because my housing situation is tied to my job.
00:34:45It's for adjusting if it's too small or too big.
00:34:48Risking my living situation for this opportunity is scary.
00:34:54One day these mountains are tired.
00:34:59Today, I'm going to be singing California by the Great Chapel Rowan.
00:35:04This song, California, talks about moving from your hometown to pursue your dream and not
00:35:09wanting to let your family down.
00:35:12This is basically the anthem of my life, the risk that I'm taking right now to pursue my music
00:35:18dreams.
00:35:19When I step on the stage, I'm going to be thinking about that plane flight that I took from
00:35:25Puerto Rico to California.
00:35:27My brother dropping me off, giving me a hug, telling me, you can do this.
00:35:36Go and make us proud.
00:35:40I stretch myself across four states, new lands, west coast, where my dreams lay.
00:35:55I trade amber for the sea foam and the endless sun rays.
00:36:09Because I was never told that I wasn't going to get the things I want the most.
00:36:16But people always say if it hasn't happened yet, then maybe you should go.
00:36:23Come get me out of California and all these are brown.
00:36:31I miss the seasons in Missouri, my dying town.
00:36:37I thought I'd be cool in California, I'd make you cry.
00:36:45I don't think I almost had a going, but I made you cry.
00:37:08I don't think I almost had a going, but I made you cry.
00:37:15I don't think I almost had a going, but I made you cry.
00:37:33You were holding that note at the end, I said, okay, okay, that was fabulous, but let me tell you
00:37:38something.
00:37:38You have a natural stage presence that you can't teach.
00:37:42I think you did a great job.
00:37:46I'm not fully satisfied with my performance.
00:37:50I kind of messed up on the lyrics.
00:37:52I feel like I could have done much better, if I'm being honest.
00:37:56I think she missed a note, if she tripped on the sequence of the lyrics.
00:38:02That's my favorite song.
00:38:04Like, I know it completely by heart.
00:38:05It was just the nerves.
00:38:07Maybe it got too excited.
00:38:09It is done.
00:38:12You're okay.
00:38:17Welcome back to American Idol, where 25-year-old stay-at-home mom, Hannah Harper, is taking the stage.
00:38:23Hannah!
00:38:25I loved her, didn't I?
00:38:26How are you guys doing tonight?
00:38:30Man, I'm Hannah Harper from Southeast Missouri, and I want to be the next American Idol, because I want to
00:38:35be the forerunners for mamas out there who can still raise babies and pursue their dreams.
00:38:44I didn't see any other dream outside of just raising a house full of kids.
00:38:49My youngest is one, and shortly after he was born, I had postpartum depression, and so I was sitting on
00:38:54my couch wallowing.
00:38:56And my son kept coming up to me, he said, Mom, open my cheese.
00:38:58I'm like, do you leave me alone with the dadgum cheese?
00:39:01And I finally opened his cheese, and when I did, I realized that God had put me in that place,
00:39:05and that where I was in my house was the biggest ministry that I could ever have.
00:39:08When I'm overwhelmed and touched out, they come climbing up on the couch, saying, Mama, can you open my string
00:39:19cheese?
00:39:20I was excited that Carrie had an emotional connection to the song, because she's in the same position.
00:39:24She's a boy mom.
00:39:25Well, that's about the most relatable song I think I've ever heard.
00:39:28And what nobody knew was how her original song would quickly become one of the most viewed clips in Idol
00:39:35history.
00:39:36The string cheese song.
00:39:39So relatable.
00:39:40Touching hundreds of millions of people across the world.
00:39:44Are you kidding me?
00:39:45A song called String Cheese has me sobbing.
00:39:49Can you open my string cheese?
00:39:51The sweetest song I've ever heard in my whole entire life.
00:39:53And I smile because I don't think it feels my soul from me and my heart is who I'm meant
00:40:03to be.
00:40:04I'm okay.
00:40:07You're my string cheese.
00:40:09You're a little sweet, Mama.
00:40:12You're one that I'm going to think about when we leave here.
00:40:15Like, I wonder what song she's going to sing next.
00:40:17And I feel like I'm going to be just rooting for you.
00:40:30I had to leave my life in Dallas
00:40:34That town will always be you
00:40:43Every crowd on in every corner
00:40:47And every face I see you
00:40:53Oh, but I can't turn this thing around
00:40:57And nothing short of breaking down
00:41:00Is going to get me off this road that I'm on
00:41:05But I'm going anywhere as fast as I can
00:41:11I'm a little past a little rock
00:41:14Further down the line
00:41:17Too soon to know what's up ahead
00:41:20Too late to change my mind
00:41:22Gotta keep my heart out of this
00:41:26With both hands on the wheel
00:41:28Learning more with every mile
00:41:31Just how living feels
00:41:34It's a lonely stretch of black top
00:41:37Out into the blue
00:41:39Don't know where I'll go
00:41:41What I'll do
00:41:45I'm a little past a little rock
00:41:48But a long ways from over you
00:41:56I'm a little past a little rock
00:41:59But a long ways from over you
00:42:15Thank you guys so much
00:42:16She has one or two little hiccups
00:42:17But her tone is amazing
00:42:21Hannah, you know you're one of my favorites in auditions
00:42:25Leanne Womack's not an easy person to sing
00:42:27It's like you listen to it and it's so nice
00:42:29But you don't realize how intricate
00:42:31The things that she does with her voice
00:42:33And I feel like you just nailed that
00:42:35Thank you so much
00:42:41Man, I thought I had it
00:42:42You must have felt great about that performance
00:42:44I was very excited about the performance
00:42:45I just wish I wouldn't have messed up the words
00:42:47You did?
00:42:48Damn it
00:42:49Did we even notice?
00:42:50I don't think anybody noticed
00:42:51I didn't notice
00:42:52I noticed
00:42:53Man, I was beating myself up
00:42:55She jumbled lyrics too and got through it
00:42:57And she handled it and didn't even bump
00:43:00Yeah
00:43:01I'm real worried right now
00:43:03I got excited
00:43:04I forgot the words
00:43:05Didn't come in on the right spot
00:43:07But I sure hope I did enough
00:43:08To make it to the next round
00:43:13With another group of performances in the books
00:43:15All right
00:43:16Okay
00:43:17All right, what do we think?
00:43:18Our hopefuls wait to see if they've done enough
00:43:21To survive the judge's first round of cuts
00:43:24We got so many to go through
00:43:26That's exactly what I was saying
00:43:27Not her?
00:43:28I don't know
00:43:29What do you think?
00:43:29Hmm
00:43:31There's a lot at stake right now
00:43:33I'm very eager to show the world that
00:43:35Even a girl from Puerto Rico can do anything
00:43:39I think this guy's time to go
00:43:41I think he just didn't rise to the occasion
00:43:43It makes me sad though
00:43:45Because I feel like it's in there
00:43:46I hate this part
00:43:48Oh, Lord have mercy
00:43:52Hang in there, kid
00:43:53Hang in there
00:43:57Ruel
00:44:00Trace
00:44:04Hannah
00:44:08You are still in the running to become the next American Idol
00:44:13Uh-oh, I'm sorry that your journey just ends right now
00:44:19Those are happy tears
00:44:21Yes
00:44:22I did it, tears
00:44:24Yes
00:44:25You wouldn't even understand
00:44:26I'm getting an idea
00:44:28I'm getting the picture
00:44:31I was scared
00:44:32I was terrified
00:44:32I didn't think I was going to get it through
00:44:37What's with that wind?
00:44:39It's a winner's breath
00:44:40I don't know, man
00:44:41Winner's breath?
00:44:42Oh, God, dude
00:44:43All right
00:44:44So much fun
00:44:45So our hopefuls can celebrate for now
00:44:48But they'll have to wait with the others until the end of the round
00:44:51When the judges make their final decision on who's made it into the top 30
00:44:55I'm scared
00:44:56Everyone's so crazy talented
00:44:58Some of us are going home
00:45:00I would like it not to be me
00:45:02Being here in the golden room and knowing that so many people are going to get cut
00:45:05It's kind of scary
00:45:06But I think the pressure is good and it will help me get through this stage
00:45:14All right, who's next?
00:45:17This is a tough board, man
00:45:20We'll see what they do
00:45:23It's a lot more than three people sitting at a table
00:45:26A lot more
00:45:27Yeah
00:45:31He was struggling with him
00:45:33I don't know why
00:45:34He's got the voice
00:45:36It's the nerves
00:45:38Probably
00:45:39We had people in auditions that were confident, spitfires
00:45:44We gave them some feedback
00:45:47It was a little shaky to start
00:45:50And it's like they fret and worry and overthink everything that we told them
00:45:57I think the nerves might have compromised just how good of a singer you are a little bit
00:46:02Did we scare him?
00:46:04I think we did
00:46:05I really hope I did enough to make it
00:46:08Oh, sorry
00:46:09Can you take the pressure?
00:46:11That's the business
00:46:15My knees are shaking, dude
00:46:16What's up, bro?
00:46:18Your knees are shaking?
00:46:19Yes, my knees are shaking
00:46:21With my audition the first time I had my hands in my pockets
00:46:24Take your hands out your pocket
00:46:26And look the folks straight in the face
00:46:29Yeah, I gotta make sure I keep those out
00:46:30Don't put them back here, though
00:46:31There you go
00:46:32Just keep them up there
00:46:33Are you gonna hold a microphone?
00:46:35Yeah, yeah
00:46:35That takes care of one
00:46:36Yeah, there you go
00:46:37Now it's what to do with the other
00:46:40Yeah, that's a good
00:46:41I mean, that kind of thing
00:46:43I need to show them more of my charisma, I guess, on stage
00:46:47And I hope they'll be able to see me move around a little bit more
00:46:50And be more of an entertainer
00:46:50How you holdin' up?
00:46:53I'm not too confident
00:46:55You don't have to do a crazy one
00:46:56I enjoy insurance
00:46:58I enjoy helping families out
00:47:01But at the end of the day, music's my first passion
00:47:04And that's why I'm here
00:47:09Something's got a hold of me lately
00:47:12No, I don't know myself anymore
00:47:18Feels like the walls are all cold
00:47:20And if the devil's knockin' at my door
00:47:25Out of my mind
00:47:28How many times did I tell you
00:47:31No good at being alone
00:47:35It's takin' a toll on me
00:47:38Tryin' my best to keep from tearin' the skin off my bones
00:47:43Don't you know
00:47:45I lose control
00:47:52When you're not next to me
00:47:57Don't fall in, don't fall right in front of you
00:48:02Can't you see?
00:48:04I lose control
00:48:10When you're not next to me
00:48:16I'm fallin' apart right in front of you
00:48:20Can't you see?
00:48:22I lose control
00:48:28When you're not next to me
00:48:34I'm bailin' apart right in front of you
00:48:38Can't you see?
00:48:43Can't you see?
00:48:46Can't you see?
00:48:50Filmin'
00:48:52Filmin'
00:48:53Ha ha ha ha ha, Philbert.
00:49:03I mean how about that?
00:49:05Philbert, who possessed you?
00:49:08Ha ha ha.
00:49:09I mean you kind of walk out.
00:49:12And then you open your mouth, and you turn in to somebody else.
00:49:19And I'm telling you, that's somebody else we love!
00:49:25Gilman!
00:49:27Thank you so much.
00:49:33Oh my God.
00:49:34That right there was ten times better than I was expecting.
00:49:37Unassuming.
00:49:38I mean, walked out here and it knocked us right out.
00:49:41Shocker. Even your eyes are watering.
00:49:43Yeah, I know. I'm gonna start crying.
00:49:44I feel like I had to get off stage for America to see the crowd a little bit.
00:49:48I'm so proud of you.
00:49:50Oh man, this is getting hard.
00:49:53I feel like we've had a lot of good ones.
00:49:55I need people to start messing up.
00:49:57We're gonna be so...
00:50:04Welcome back to American Idol.
00:50:07So far after 52 performances,
00:50:09just 19 hopefuls have moved on to the Golden Room.
00:50:12Still in consideration for the top 30.
00:50:16They're at least cutting half of us.
00:50:18And like, I ain't gonna sit here and lie.
00:50:20I'm a little scared.
00:50:21Once all 127 have sung,
00:50:24those who remain here will have to survive one more major cut
00:50:28at the end of the round.
00:50:30I've heard people sing,
00:50:32and there's a lot of very, very, very talented people here.
00:50:35This is the biggest stage that I've ever performed on in my life.
00:50:43First time I performed on a stage was just at my piano recital.
00:50:46I was probably about eight years old.
00:50:52I thought I had just won a Grammy after I sang that song.
00:50:57I don't think my younger self would really believe it,
00:50:59that I would be performing on this massive stage.
00:51:02My first audition I did guitar,
00:51:04but this week I'm showing a little bit of a different side of myself.
00:51:07I'm gonna have to up my game if I want to get to that 30.
00:51:40The torture on my mind
00:51:50Other on
00:51:54Reach out to me
00:51:57Other I smile tenderly
00:52:04I still have peaceful dreams I see
00:52:10The road leads back to you
00:52:17I said Georgia
00:52:23Georgia
00:52:27No peace, no peace I find
00:52:33Just an old sweet song
00:52:37Keeps Georgia on my mind
00:52:46I said just an old sweet song
00:52:53Keeps Georgia on my mind
00:53:09I mean 17 years old coming out here doing Georgia
00:53:13You know I'm from Georgia so you're already trying to make me
00:53:17Just sucking up a little bit
00:53:18Play in the room already but uh
00:53:20Thank you
00:53:21You did great, yeah
00:53:23I've heard the rest of the singers in my group
00:53:26It's actually really intimidating
00:53:29Especially because rehearsal has been stressful
00:53:31I could not hear myself at all
00:53:35What's that?
00:53:36I couldn't hear anything
00:53:37You walked past the wedges
00:53:39But you were not off pitch
00:53:41Your notes were on
00:53:43But I know myself and I've never sang that horrible
00:53:48I really want to show the judges something out of my comfort zone
00:53:52And that's what they asked for
00:53:54You were hitting some high notes in there
00:53:57Yeah
00:53:57But it would be great if you could put some oomph in there
00:54:00Oh you should see me with a band
00:54:03Maybe I took it too far and I'm doing too hard of a song
00:54:07I just fell, I kind of stumbled a little bit
00:54:09I just wanted to be good enough for this
00:54:11But it's just starting to feel like I can't do it
00:54:19But right now I'm just trying to remember my Aunt Brittany
00:54:23Carmen, I'm still crying
00:54:25I think Brittany has always been a very big mentor to me
00:54:29To believe in myself, to have the confidence
00:54:32You are ready, you're ready for this, you were born for this
00:54:35Born for this
00:54:37And that just helps
00:54:39Just remind myself that
00:54:42I am good enough to just be here at this part
00:54:45I really don't want to screw it up
00:54:49At least I look hot when I cry
00:54:51Hello
00:55:02Your love is like a tile away
00:55:05you're standing over my head
00:55:08It's drowning me in your promises
00:55:11I'm gonna let it all set
00:55:14You're the good kind of sinner
00:55:17To release my inner fantasy
00:55:20The events of the winter
00:55:23And you know that you are born to be
00:55:28You're a heartbreaker, dream maker
00:55:32Love taker, don't you mess around with me
00:55:35You're a heartbreaker, dream maker
00:55:39Love taker, don't you make me
00:55:40You're giving up?
00:55:42Why she's giving up?
00:55:43Just don't, don't mess around with me
00:56:00You got another guest?
00:56:05You good?
00:56:06Are you okay?
00:56:07You good?
00:56:08I have fun
00:56:08Good
00:56:10Okay, I kind of felt like you
00:56:12Looked like you were about to pass out or something
00:56:13Towards the end of that
00:56:15It's a fast song
00:56:16Yeah
00:56:17So yes, I was trying to keep up
00:56:20But I did my best
00:56:22I know we were like
00:56:23We need some gas
00:56:24And we need some sass
00:56:25And you picked a sassy song
00:56:27Yeah
00:56:28But then I felt like you were just running behind it
00:56:31Kind of the whole time
00:56:32Kind of swallowed up
00:56:33So I feel like, I don't know
00:56:35We're processing here
00:56:37But you obviously have like this huge range to work with
00:56:42And I mean, we love you
00:56:44Or you wouldn't be here
00:56:45Thank you
00:56:46Thank you
00:56:47Good job
00:56:47Thank you
00:56:48Yeah
00:56:52I actually thought I was pinning a lot into the performance to sort of hear that
00:56:57It just kind of broke me
00:57:00We're so critical now
00:57:02We have to be
00:57:03We got so many to go through
00:57:05How many do we need to get rid of?
00:57:07A lot of people are going home today
00:57:08I really hope I'm not one of them
00:57:11Didn't we like him?
00:57:12He has a great voice
00:57:13But he gets lost in the moment
00:57:16Right
00:57:17I don't know
00:57:18I just like him
00:57:18Okay
00:57:18It's people's dreams
00:57:20If I call your name
00:57:21Please step forward
00:57:28Filming
00:57:36If I call your name
00:57:39Please step forward
00:57:42Filming
00:57:46Lucas
00:57:49Kira
00:57:55You three are still in the competition
00:57:57Going through to the Golden Room
00:58:01Back row is the end of the lap
00:58:03Thank you guys
00:58:08The big one there
00:58:10I'm on cloud nine right now
00:58:12Or whatever the phrase is
00:58:13Cloud nine, cloud ten
00:58:14Oh my gosh
00:58:16This is huge
00:58:17This is amazing
00:58:17I'm so excited
00:58:18He only called three names
00:58:20And praised B
00:58:21That I was one of them
00:58:23That's painful
00:58:25Is this the end of the road
00:58:26For now, for here?
00:58:27For American Idol
00:58:28For American Idol, yeah
00:58:29But not for Carmen
00:58:30No, of course not
00:58:31No
00:58:31I have to still be
00:58:32My ambitious self
00:58:34And just try to reach
00:58:35For the stars
00:58:39So two of our youngest hopefuls
00:58:41Have moved on
00:58:42To the Golden Room
00:58:44And from there
00:58:45More teenage singers
00:58:46Were proving
00:58:47They came to fight
00:58:48Well I know that
00:58:50There could come a fire
00:58:52From the sky
00:58:54To a fire
00:58:56The purest of king
00:59:00Yes, people are always surprised
00:59:02When they hear how young I am
00:59:03And they're like
00:59:04You're 16?
00:59:05I get that a lot
00:59:06But I can sing
00:59:08Okay guys
00:59:09Like watch out
00:59:10Make it rain
00:59:13Make it rain
00:59:15Now Lord
00:59:16Make it rain
00:59:23Make it rain
00:59:24It rain
00:59:29You know
00:59:30I keep looking at the number
00:59:31It says 16
00:59:32I keep looking at the performance
00:59:34And listening to the performance
00:59:35It says 42
00:59:38But more importantly
00:59:39The notes that came out
00:59:41Were amazing
00:59:42Thank you
00:59:43Absolutely amazing
00:59:44I love the performance
00:59:45I know
00:59:46Thank you
00:59:49I'm surprised by all the people
00:59:51My age
00:59:51Honestly
00:59:52I never thought
00:59:53You know
00:59:53People my age
00:59:54Had that type of pipes
00:59:57Oh
00:59:57He's a cute little
00:59:5816 year old
00:59:59Oh yeah
01:00:00Let's see how he does
01:00:01In the bright light
01:00:02Okay
01:00:04Everybody's waiting
01:00:05For a break
01:00:07Like fast cause of freedom
01:00:09I'm 16 years old
01:00:11You know
01:00:11I understand this competition
01:00:13Can be a stressful thing
01:00:14To go through
01:00:15But I have what it takes
01:00:16For sure
01:00:17I just want to be loved
01:00:21I just want to be loved
01:00:28Can you tell me am I worthy
01:00:31Or am I working hard enough
01:00:35We're not expecting you to be anything other than what you are
01:00:3916 year old kid
01:00:41But you're just doing impressive stuff
01:00:44You should be very very proud
01:00:45Good job
01:00:46I just want to be loved
01:00:55I'm one of two 15 year olds in this competition
01:00:57So I have to step it up and show that I can hold my own
01:01:01Even being so young
01:01:02My audition went really well
01:01:04It was a very emotional audition
01:01:06I wrote this song
01:01:08In honor of Aubrey Wyatt
01:01:10Miss Heather's daughter
01:01:11She was bullied for years
01:01:13And took her life
01:01:14I'm just so moved
01:01:16The way you had your heart broken
01:01:18For someone you didn't even know
01:01:21You know
01:01:23For this round
01:01:24I'll be performing
01:01:25Stay by Sugar Land
01:01:27I've been working for this moment
01:01:29My entire life
01:01:30Are you nervous at all?
01:01:31No ma'am
01:01:32I mean I've been doing this
01:01:33Since I was so young
01:01:34I've been performing
01:01:35In front of people
01:01:36On a stage
01:01:36Since I was 10 years old
01:01:38Make some noise
01:01:38For Chloe Grace
01:01:41Hi
01:01:44My name is Chloe Grace
01:01:46I'm 15 years old
01:01:47And I want to be the youngest competitor
01:01:49To ever win this show
01:01:53Ready to do it
01:01:54And that's what she said
01:01:55I love it
01:01:5615 years old
01:01:58I'm super ready
01:02:02I've been sitting here staring at the clock on the wall
01:02:09And I've been laying here praying
01:02:12Praying she won't call
01:02:15It's just another call from home
01:02:19You'll get it and be gone
01:02:22And I'll be crying
01:02:31What do I have to do
01:02:34To make you see
01:02:38She can't love you like me
01:02:43Why don't you stay
01:02:48So the next time you'll find
01:02:52You want to leave her bed for mine
01:03:02Why don't you stay
01:03:10Why don't you stay
01:03:15Why don't you stay
01:03:29Chloe Chloe
01:03:31What a tough song to sing
01:03:32It's just you being a 15 year old
01:03:35That's the way it's going to sound
01:03:37In the front part
01:03:38It seemed like you were pretty nervous
01:03:40But toward the end
01:03:42You really started locking in
01:03:43And hitting your stride
01:03:44I mean
01:03:45You should be so proud of yourself
01:03:47Good job
01:03:50Anytime you're dealing with a 15, 16 year old kid
01:03:53It becomes really, really delicate
01:03:55She was too young
01:03:56She was good
01:03:57A sweet little girl
01:03:58This could be a life-altering moment for them
01:04:02And we want it to alter them in a positive way
01:04:06Not too young, just not ready
01:04:08We hope that it doesn't alter their confidence
01:04:11In who they are as an artist
01:04:14Okay, thank you guys
01:04:14Stand by, please
01:04:15Okay, here we go
01:04:17The following people, step forward, please
01:04:21Aboyomi
01:04:24Michael
01:04:33The front row goes through
01:04:36The back row, this is the end of the road
01:04:39Thank you very much
01:04:40I love you so much
01:04:54Feeling great, man, for real
01:04:56I'm so excited right now
01:04:57Me only being 16
01:04:59I really thought I was out for the count
01:05:01But I guess this just proves
01:05:02It's not just about the age
01:05:04It's about what you got inside
01:05:05And you did it, Aboyomi
01:05:07You broke both the doors
01:05:09And you made it to the next round
01:05:10Thank you
01:05:12Congratulations
01:05:15Two more of our teens
01:05:16Survived the judge's first cut
01:05:18But it's the end of the road for another
01:05:21So this is it for this time around
01:05:24Yes, sir
01:05:24I know it's disappointing
01:05:26But there's a lot of future in front of you
01:05:27Thank you
01:05:31It's hard to go home
01:05:32I would have loved to move forward
01:05:35But they felt like it was best for me
01:05:37To go home and work hard
01:05:38And maybe come back one day
01:05:40This is just the beginning
01:05:42We love you, baby
01:05:43We're so proud of you
01:05:44Doing great
01:05:51Welcome back to Hollywood Week
01:05:53Music City Takeover
01:05:55Sitting in this golden room
01:05:57Amongst some of the best talented singers
01:05:59On this side of the earth
01:06:00It makes me feel honored
01:06:02To be a part of the chosen one
01:06:05It's blowing my mind right now
01:06:06Because I don't know what's coming up
01:06:08It feels a little tense in the room
01:06:10There's a lot of good performers
01:06:11That are going up right now
01:06:13So I'm sweating
01:06:15Hollywood Week is a slap on your mama's mouth
01:06:21And I remember the sickness was forever
01:06:26And I remember the snuffing video
01:06:32Cold September's the distances we cover
01:06:38The fistfights on the beach
01:06:41The busies round us up
01:06:44Do it all again next week
01:06:47And the boy who kicked Tom's head
01:06:50Still bugs me now
01:06:53And that's the thing we thank
01:06:56It cuts you when you're down
01:07:01As she wept and wept and wept
01:07:04Love came and died down here
01:07:07I see my murder
01:07:09The DWPC number
01:07:12Crys on the floor ain't coming
01:07:1517 going under
01:07:18I'm 17 going under
01:07:29I'm 17 going under
01:07:35Thank you
01:07:36Thank you guys so much
01:07:38Thank you
01:07:39I like that
01:07:42Boom
01:07:43I like that
01:07:46You're so ready for this
01:07:48Yeah man
01:07:49That's very kind of
01:07:50Thank you
01:07:51Even the sound that you chose
01:07:53On that guitar
01:07:54Was a really really cool sound
01:07:55The way you started in
01:07:57The band
01:07:58I mean you're just ready to do this
01:07:59Let me go win this thing
01:08:02Make an album
01:08:02Hit the road
01:08:03Get a band
01:08:05You know it's a little bit bigger
01:08:06Of a band than I would normally play with
01:08:08Which is a ton of fun
01:08:09But I consider myself really lucky
01:08:11That I have had the opportunity
01:08:12To play a lot
01:08:13Over the last bunch of years
01:08:14And I'm hoping that
01:08:16That will get me into the top 30
01:08:20This is a tough board man
01:08:23How are we going to get these people
01:08:25Down to 30
01:08:26I don't know
01:08:27That's what I'm sitting here thinking
01:08:30Up next to take the stage
01:08:31Is Minnesota hopeful
01:08:33Chris Tungseth
01:08:34Being here on American Idol
01:08:36I mean it means everything
01:08:38It's kind of a
01:08:39A start of something new for me
01:08:40Just like a new season
01:08:43Of joy
01:08:43I love you guys
01:08:45Love you too
01:08:46Love you too
01:08:54I'm doing this for
01:08:55My mom and for my family
01:08:57And obviously my dad is
01:08:59Here with me in spirit
01:09:00I am so proud
01:09:02I have an American Idol
01:09:05For a son
01:09:08So for Hollywood week
01:09:10I'm going to be singing
01:09:10Jealous by Labyrinth
01:09:13I'm really excited to hear them
01:09:16After losing my dad
01:09:17And I heard this song
01:09:18And I was like
01:09:19Oh this could mean so many things
01:09:21It's a breakup song
01:09:23Essentially
01:09:24But when I listen to it
01:09:27After losing dad
01:09:29I think of you losing dad
01:09:32Because there's parts in that song
01:09:33Where it's like
01:09:34I'm jealous of the rain
01:09:36That falls upon your skin
01:09:37Share your life
01:09:42Yeah
01:09:43You know
01:09:44Thank you
01:09:46My family is the reason why
01:09:49I feel so confident
01:09:51In pursuing my dream
01:09:53This performance
01:09:54Could change my life
01:09:56I know my dad's with me
01:09:58And I know my mom's at home
01:09:59Just rooting for me
01:10:00Praying for me
01:10:01And so
01:10:02I'm going to go out there
01:10:03And give it everything that I have
01:10:10I'm jealous of the rain
01:10:16That falls upon your skin
01:10:22It's closer than my hands have been
01:10:28Oh I'm jealous of rain
01:10:35I'm jealous of the wind
01:10:42That ripples through your clothes
01:10:49It's closer than your shadow
01:10:54Oh I'm jealous of the wind
01:11:03But I wish you
01:11:06The best of all this world
01:11:13This world could give
01:11:15And I told you
01:11:19When you left me
01:11:22There's nothing to forgive
01:11:28But I always thought you'd come back
01:11:32Tell me
01:11:34All you found was
01:11:38Heartbreak and misery
01:11:41It's hard for me to say
01:11:45I'm jealous of the way
01:11:49You're happy without me
01:11:55It's hard for me to say
01:11:59I'm jealous of the way
01:12:02You're happy without me
01:12:18I mean I felt like that was just kind of captivating
01:12:22You know
01:12:22Just hanging on every word
01:12:24Wondering what you were going to do with it
01:12:26You've got that soulful
01:12:28Soft, sensitive thing in your voice
01:12:32And it's very mesmerizing
01:12:35Thank you
01:12:36Thank you Chris
01:12:44I feel like
01:12:46I didn't really like the way he arranged it
01:12:48Yeah
01:12:49Yeah
01:12:50That song typically auditions very well
01:12:53Yeah
01:12:54It didn't compliment him
01:12:55It was a little quick
01:12:57That song
01:12:58It's supposed to be one that you milk every second of
01:13:01Yeah
01:13:02I just had to hone in on what I knew I could do
01:13:05And I feel like I did that right there
01:13:07So
01:13:08We got a lot of cuts to make
01:13:10Stay tuned
01:13:12For more results in Music City
01:13:24The thing I love about American Idol
01:13:28Is its ability to take normal everyday people
01:13:32People that have not been anywhere
01:13:34In or around the music industry
01:13:37We take those people
01:13:38And give them the opportunity of a lifetime
01:13:41Being here in Hollywood Week in Music City
01:13:45Is nerve wracking
01:13:48I have never performed with a big band
01:13:51Or in front of anyone
01:13:52Except for in church
01:13:54This does feel like a big opportunity
01:13:56Stuff like this just doesn't happen to people like me
01:14:03Growing up in Warrenville
01:14:05It was very
01:14:07Definitely different
01:14:09It's not very wealthy
01:14:11It's very small
01:14:12Very poverty like town
01:14:18I did move around a lot growing up
01:14:20We've probably moved about ten times
01:14:22Moving schools a lot
01:14:24And it didn't really feel like I fit in anywhere
01:14:26I didn't really have a lot of friends
01:14:28I know finances weren't always like there for us
01:14:31It was really hard for me to talk about it
01:14:38Music was the constant
01:14:39And all of that craziness
01:14:42I always felt limited
01:14:44Like I don't have the resources to reach
01:14:46This goal of mine when it comes to music
01:14:49Because I've always wanted to sing
01:14:50I would lay down at night
01:14:53And I would pray
01:14:55And hope that something would come about
01:14:59And now I'm here
01:15:07I'm going to be singing
01:15:08Girls just want to have fun
01:15:10Hi Cindy Lauper
01:15:20I come home in the morning light
01:15:24My mother says
01:15:27What you're going to do with your life
01:15:30Oh mama dear
01:15:32We're not the fortunate ones
01:15:35But girls, they want to have fun
01:15:38Oh girls just want to have fun
01:15:45That's all they really want
01:15:54When the working day is done
01:15:58Oh girls, they want to have fun
01:16:02Oh girls just want to have fun
01:16:11They just want to
01:16:13They just want to
01:16:15They just want to
01:16:19When the working day is done
01:16:25Oh girls, they want to have fun
01:16:30Oh girls just want to have fun
01:16:44Well Chloe, I tell you what
01:16:47You have one of the most original sounding voices in the whole competition
01:16:53Thank you
01:16:54When I heard you were going to do
01:16:57Girls just want to have fun
01:16:58I was like
01:16:59I can't imagine her voice doing it like Cindy Lauper did it
01:17:03And then when I heard kind of the moodier version
01:17:06I kind of really got confused
01:17:08Because I wanted the original version that Cindy Lauper did
01:17:11But then I really enjoyed your version
01:17:14But then it got a little sleepy
01:17:15But then I still loved your voice
01:17:19Yeah
01:17:20Overall, there's a lot of emotions that I'm going through right now
01:17:24And I thought that we were all going to be dancing to girls just want to have fun
01:17:28But I really appreciate your arrangement
01:17:30And when you do want to have fun
01:17:32Make sure you come on out here and have a big old time
01:17:34Alright
01:17:35Thank you
01:17:38I feel like I let myself down
01:17:40I am self-sabotaged really badly
01:17:43I tried to do the best that I could
01:17:46It's almost like she's given up on herself
01:17:49The pressure of the competition is definitely a playing factor
01:17:53And why I feel the way I feel
01:17:54And I don't feel like I did my very best
01:17:57She's got the voice
01:17:59Wrong song
01:18:00It's really about pushing myself
01:18:03And wanting to win
01:18:04Because I know I can
01:18:07I don't know where she went
01:18:08Yeah
01:18:09That's not it
01:18:10Here's 22-year-old Brayden Ruffin
01:18:15Oh, I remember
01:18:22Gotta loosen up
01:18:24Like I wanted to come out there
01:18:25And just like shake your arms
01:18:27And throw your vest across the room
01:18:29And I think you're a racehorse, man
01:18:31Are you usually a mover, a traveler on the stage?
01:18:34A little bit
01:18:35I've had some knee issues
01:18:36So I kind of tend to stay in the same spot
01:18:39How's your knee?
01:18:40Not too bad
01:18:40I just had two surgeries on these guys
01:18:42In the last year
01:18:47I've had two lower leg realignments
01:18:50The doctors have explained
01:18:51That all your body's resources
01:18:54Are going into healing the leg
01:18:56And so you could be susceptible to get sick
01:18:59That sparked something in my head
01:19:01Like, oh my gosh
01:19:02Wash your hands constantly
01:19:03Don't touch anybody
01:19:05Don't let them get near you
01:19:07No hugs
01:19:08Now I'm in a panic mode
01:19:10Like, I'm going to die now
01:19:16These intrusive thoughts
01:19:17Pop into my head
01:19:18That are not real
01:19:19They kind of develop
01:19:20A contamination OCD
01:19:22And it's really debilitating
01:19:25I had started going to therapy
01:19:28I've made huge strides
01:19:29To getting a lot better
01:19:35Hollywood week
01:19:36That's good for me
01:19:37I can focus on
01:19:38Putting my energy
01:19:39Into something that
01:19:40Is real
01:19:42This performance
01:19:42Is going to be
01:19:43The biggest one
01:19:44Of my entire life
01:19:44I'm confident
01:19:46Going into it
01:19:48Hello, hello, hello
01:19:50I'm doing
01:19:50I'm not the only one
01:19:51By Sam Smith
01:20:03You and me
01:20:05We made a vow
01:20:07For better or worse
01:20:14I can't believe you let me down
01:20:18But the pool's everywhere
01:20:23You say
01:20:26I'm crazy
01:20:29Cause you don't think
01:20:32I know what you love
01:20:34But
01:20:36Will you call me
01:20:40Baby
01:20:41I know I'm not the only one
01:20:47I have loved you
01:20:50For many years
01:20:52Baby
01:20:53I am just not enough
01:20:58You made me realize
01:21:00My deepest fear
01:21:03By lying
01:21:05And tearing us up
01:21:07You say
01:21:10You say
01:21:12I praise you
01:21:14For you don't think
01:21:16I know what you love
01:21:20But will you call me
01:21:24Baby
01:21:25I know I'm not the only one
01:21:29And I know
01:21:32And I know
01:21:34And I know
01:21:35And I know
01:21:37I know
01:21:39I'm not
01:21:40The only
01:21:43Oh
01:21:45Oh
01:21:46Oh
01:21:54Damn
01:21:55Damn it
01:21:55Damn it
01:21:56Damn it
01:21:58Damn it
01:21:58Damn it
01:21:58Damn it
01:22:02Brayden
01:22:03Man
01:22:04Can you make it look hard next time?
01:22:07Just laid it in there
01:22:09We knew you were special
01:22:10In your audition
01:22:11We knew it
01:22:13We felt it
01:22:14We're here to support you
01:22:16We're here to lift you up
01:22:17We want you to have fun
01:22:19And man
01:22:20You picked the perfect song
01:22:23Perfect song
01:22:23Perfect
01:22:25Thank you
01:22:26Thank you
01:22:26And lean in
01:22:29Be you
01:22:29Be yourself
01:22:30And get ready for the ride
01:22:31It's going to be really really special
01:22:37I don't know what you do
01:22:39I'm just like
01:22:40Ow
01:22:41Golly
01:22:41He might win
01:22:43I'm thankful for the opportunity
01:22:45No matter how it turns out
01:22:46But it seems like it's going to do well
01:22:48Hang tight right here folks
01:22:49Our judges are going to do deliberations
01:22:51And then we're going to know the results
01:22:54There's so much at stake
01:22:56And going into results
01:22:57There's just so many talented musicians here
01:22:59Like I want to be in the top 30 so bad
01:23:01Pass that old board down here
01:23:02So I can get my attitude right
01:23:06It probably means more to me
01:23:07Than most people here
01:23:09I've always pulled through
01:23:11Any situation I've ever been in
01:23:13I don't know
01:23:14This one's different
01:23:18This is a very heavy class
01:23:21And all of you have done amazing
01:23:24Amazing work
01:23:27This is probably the most unprecedented
01:23:30Time we've ever had
01:23:31Where we had to just cut talent
01:23:35Having said that
01:23:36Will the following people step forward?
01:23:39Jake
01:23:44Brianna
01:23:52Brayden
01:23:55This is something we are charged with doing
01:23:58So
01:24:01Front row
01:24:04You should be very proud of how far you've come
01:24:09But for now
01:24:10But for now
01:24:10Your journey
01:24:15Next Monday
01:24:16You're in the toughest class
01:24:18We have ever had
01:24:19It's the conclusion of Hollywood Week
01:24:21Music City Takeover
01:24:23You're warm on the edge right now
01:24:24Some of us are going home
01:24:26Where we find out
01:24:28Who survives
01:24:29I was trying to kick you out of the room
01:24:30Because I'm so jealous of you
01:24:32If you were thinking about winning
01:24:33Just keep doing that
01:24:35And gets in
01:24:35To the top 30
01:24:37Am I freaking out about it?
01:24:38Yeah
01:24:38I feel you guys are going to burn me
01:24:41Bring it on!
01:24:42I love it!
01:24:43I did everything I could
01:24:45I'm so sorry
01:24:46I would love nothing more
01:24:47Than to be a part of those 30 singers that make it
01:24:49Let's just hope
01:24:50Hope and pray
01:24:51We got more bloodshed coming
01:24:53We have some sing-offs
