00:02MCA paid tribute to its sixth president, Tun Dr. Ling Leong-sik, who passed away peacefully
00:07on Saturday at the age of 82.
00:10The political party said its members are deeply saddened by the news and wish to extend condolences
00:16to Ling's family.
00:18They said Ling pursued his studies at University of Singapore in 1961 and graduated with a Bachelor
00:25of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery degree in 1966, after which he practised medicine in
00:31Penang.
00:32They said Ling joined the party in 1969, marking the beginning of his political career.
00:38They said Ling had once said that practising medicine is meaningful, but one can only help
00:42one person at a time, whereas in politics, every decision can affect and benefit millions.
00:49They added that it was what drove Ling to enter politics.
00:52He rose to prominence when he was appointed to the party's Central Committee in 1971 and
00:58won his first general election in 1974 to become the MP for Mata Kuching.
01:04He was elected the party president in 1986 and went on to lead the party until 2003, as he
01:12remains as the longest-serving party president.
01:15Meanwhile, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim sent his condolences to Ling's family.
01:21He said Ling was a statesman who had made immense contributions to the country.
01:26He said Ling was an inspiration to future generations and his services and contributions will be remembered.

01:44Ling's wake service will be held from April 6-7 at Shao Earn Centre in Kuala Lumpur, followed
